Not much of a point to go to class, but is required. Pretty easy to get a A. Just a drag to go to class when you don't even learn all that much. Same routine just about every class session.
Class was challenging and I learned a lot. Sandel has an easy-going style and gives meaningful feedback on essays. Group discussions are stimulating and fun.
This was my 3rd class with Mr. Sandel. He taught me that I'm a much better writer than I thought. The readings are always interesting and the writing exercises really make writing enjoyable.
Okay heres the rundown. He's a very nice easy going teacher. Overall a pretty easy class! Oh yeah, if you dont miss a day of class and dont miss any hw assignments, he'll raise your grade 1 letter at the end of the course!! I got my "A" baby!
I'm glad I took this class with Mr. Sandel. He really opened up my mind to different ways of interpreting literature. He encourages you to think for yourself which makes for great discussions.
The articles he choose are boring, long and hard to understand. The class is boring and you don’t learn much from him. It maybe easy for American students to deal with, but hard for ESL. I don't enjoy in his class because I don't feel he is enjoy either.
This is a great class. The readings and discussion topics really got me thinking about a lot of different cultures and where we get our beliefs and values. Sandel creates a very open class environment where you can express your opinions freely.
Very DRY, including the class, the reading, and the teacher. You are on your own. Doesn't learn much. Good luck.
he's an awesome teacher. the 2 books we read were regarding philosophical items. we started the everyday by writing something in our journals (which he doesn't collect). the homework isn't hard (just reading + writing). very nice chill class.
Good class, good variety of readings, great discussions. I finally understand poetry and Shakespeare!
I like his way of teaching. The group discussion sessions are fun.I got an A and its pretty easy to do well.Just do the homeworks assigned and you will be good to go.
sandel was a really easy teacher. he's kinda boring after a while (aka an hour) but he's a pretty easy grader and pretty straight forward.
He's alright. We only had 3 essays but plenty of readings. I usually BS'd on my responses and got good grades on 'em.
He is strict on attendance and tardiness but hes a great teacher. We go through many interesting topics in our discussions. I learned alot from this teacher and recommend this teacher to anyone else. Easy A if you know how to do essays.
This teacher is great. You read this myth book and the whole class is about the book, which is great. Only drawback is the attendance, he's pretty strict about it.
Mr Sandel's class is a combination of english writing and theology. his class is not that hard to achieve an A, and it's and interesting class. his essay topics are interesting and unique. no midterm, no final! just the reading responses can get dry as time goes on. but, generall, good class! recommend!
I don't think he is a easy teacher. Most of my classmates got C or D on the first essay even they worked very hard on it. He is not a good grader. The class is boring. Group discussion all the time. The topic is not interesting. Anyway, I think he is a hard grader at all.
Mr Sandel is great..he teaches in depth about shakespeare's stuff and he knows the material well. the bad thing is the harsh grading. and he always asks you to freewrite something while he is marking the papers and response. not an easy class but you will probably learn a lot
I think he grades fairly. Attendance is a must to do well in the class. There's homework and journal writings due every class. Other than that, the class is easy, if you put effort into it. You have four essays - no midterm, no final. The reading is interesting, but can be boring at times. Overall, the class is enjoyable.
This was the best English class I've ever had. Sandel makes the writing process personal and fun. Great reading topics and class discussions! He has a great sense of humor too.
He really knows what he's talking about and teaches you to think for yourself about literature. The class is stimulating and fun. I learned a lot!
I loved this class!!!! Adam did such a wonderful job engaging all students in the material. Thanks to him, I am now a high school English teacher!
Mr. Sandel is cool!! Don't miss any reading assignments or responses, those hurt ur grade! 1 essay, 1 presentation, 1 in-class essay and 1 research paper for final. I have improved my Eng after i take this class. Thz Mr. Sandel ;)

Great class and instructor! The readings are challenging but I learned a lot. Class discussions are very stimulating.
He really cares about his students. Comments on essays focus on ways to become a better writer. What Mr. Sandel taught me has helped me in all of my classes.
Fun class that also makes you think! Discussions are great and grading seems fair. I learned a lot about fiction and poetry from Sandel.
Very cool instructor and class! He really helps you to find the meanings beneath the myths and fairy tales we read. Great sense of humor too!
TO EVERYONE WHO THINKS THIS THIS CLASS IS HARD: its cuz you're an int' student. for all the native english speakers, this class is ridiculously easy. it's so sad.. i feel sorry for the people who struggle in his class.
Good teacher. Makes you open your mind. Very consistent class: journal writing, group discussion, class discussion. Grades fairly. Work hard and get an A. It is feasible that this class will be difficult for international students.
Great teacher! It is so easy to get an A. All you have to do is show up to class do the written responses and only have to write 4 essays including the final. Its that easy! Highly recommend him!
Simple class, 4 essays total, 2 are in class and 2 are take home. daily simple assignments. do all assignments and your gaurenteed at least a B. if you do all assignments with some effort your grade is boosted up a letter grade. his class is discussions, which are good and you learn alot from his views upon certain subjects. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
Taking this class changed my life. I know that sounds over-the-top, but I am being completely sincere here. Reading Joseph Campbell really stimulated my mind in a way that I've never experienced before. I believe that anyone from any segment of society can benefit from his ideas.
Mr. Sandel teaches about mythology which can be very interesting. You have to do some work like response papers due for every class and 4 essays. Overall, easy B/A.
I love Mr. Sandel. He's really nice and his class is really fun. Although there was a lot of homework, I loved getting in the group discussions. It's a great way to meet people and it's very helpful. It really wasn't hard to get an A...I suggest that you should take his class if given the chance.
I took Sandel for all my english requirements and I never got bored of him. His teaching technique is one of a kind. Class structure is clear and his grading is very fair. TAKE HIM!!
simply love him and his class :* He opened my mind, to a literature's world and real world also :D Take him and you'll see :)
4 essays, 2 in class, 2 take home.do all the assignments and never absent, it adds 1 grade, a lot of extra credit.he's a little hard on grading essays, but you can still get an a. interesting readings and discussions
Hey, if you don't want that A then let me take this class so i can get an A+++++++++++++++++++++, others do bad because they don't do any of the work, what do you think this is
PROFESSOR SANDEL IS AWESOME!! AS LONG AS YOU DO GOOD ON THE ESSAYS AND DO ALL THE JOURNALS AND COME TO CLASS YOU'LL GET AN A!! THANKS SANDEL
As many students commented, he is a bit hard when it comes to grading essays. But, as long as you do all the work assigned, you should be fine. I am an international student, but I still got A for class. If you are a "college" student who doesn't need detailed feedback, Mr. Sandel will be the teacher for you.
Great teacher. I took the summer course. everyday you had to write, but it is not a big deal. do all the assignments, extra -credit, and essay. we had 4 essays: 2 take home & 2 in-class. The class is more of critical thinking and analyzing. i recommend taking his class.
Get ready to write. Daily writing, textbook reading responses, responses to more reading along with three in-class essays and two papers make for a lot of tree-killin. Make sure you understand exactly what he's looking for in your writing. He likes participation is class so speak up.
He's an interesting enough teacher, but I didn't agree with his grading. I'm normally an A student and he would constantly give me Cs on papers that followed all his guidelines. But when I'd turn in what I thought was a mediocre paper, he'd give me an A. Weird. Overall a fun class, but if you want a fair grade, I wouldn't recommend him.
Really interesting and entertaining class. Mr. Sandel expects a lot from his students and helps you improve. I finally know what college writing is.
Very engaging class and text! A lot of reading and writing, homewk due at the start of each class, then discussed during that day. This preps you for midterm and final (in-class essays). Class is analytical, so the writing you are expected to produce is the same. He is good at preparing you with class discussions. He likes students who participate.
He is an awesome teacher! I took him for Intro to Creative Writing and I got exactly what I wanted from the class! I love writing and he just helped tone our ability. The work is pretty easy, you either like writing or don't. At the end of quarter you get to write plays and have them performed in class! Overall, this class was super fun
I don't know where all these people even get the idea that this guy is good. I came from a high school with really high standards for English. I got A's there. Of course, I was born and raised in the US. But, Mr. Sandel's class was extremely boring and his countless write-ups seemed boring and useless to me. In fact, they took up alot of time.
Great class and instructor! I didn't care much about literature before this class, but he chose great readings and taught us how to analyze them in depth. He keeps it fun and has respect for everyone's opinions.
Great instructor, keeps the class discussions interesting. By no means is this class an easy A you will have to work for your A. Lots for reading and response papers. 3 essay papers, 1 in class & 2 take home. 1 group poem project. Gives extra credit opportunities. Good luck!
Great Teacher!! you HAVE to take him!! he's just wonderful.. knows his stuff well and getting an A isnt hard if you attend class and do the assigned work
I enjoyed his class a lot! Learned quite a lot about literature and started to love it! Not a hard class. Just do all the homework and write properly, and you will get a good grade. Coursework includes: written responses, 3 essays, 1 group project and a play/poetry reading response. Class is mostly discussions. Definitely take him! :D
Great class, readings, discussions and instructor! I learned a lot about how to become a better writer and the power of myth on cultures throughout time.
This is a review from an average student. He's super easy and i'll tell you what all you want to hear. He will cancel class alot and you'll always get out and 1/2 - 1 hour early
This class was inspiring beyond anything i can describe. Adam demands a LOT of reading and writing but the content of his classes changed my life... This is well worth the effort. i HIGHLY recommend this class, as an international student again ENG is not easy but you will no doubt improve!!
Sandel is a great instructor. He gives a fair amount of work and class is not dreadful because he keeps it interesting and keeps us busy. He is extremely organized and never gets off topic. Lectures are to the point. He lets class out early.
I was never very good at writing-based classes, but most of his assignments are fairly easy. He was a tad harsh when grading essays, in my opinion, but I'm also inept at writing. The content is incredibly fascinating — if you're the philosophical type, at least. I loved it, and this class helped me through a tumultuous time.
Easiest A of my life. Do the 1-2 page assignments every day and you'll do well. On the in class essays, just write a lot, quote some important text, and analyze it and you'll get an A on those too. I was considering dropping this at first, but I'm glad I didn't. Couldn't have asked for a more chill class.
I loved his class, easy, and i learned a lot. TAKE HIM!
Sandel is an awesome teacher. He's sarcastic and has a dry humor but it isn't annoying. The class is easy if you keep up and don't miss too much. He also gives you a chance to makeup all missed hw assignments.
One of the best and interesting teacher at deanza. You read a lot in this class but the books are so interesting it didn't matter. Take him do the homework and show up n you will learn a lot and pass the class!
nice guy. Attendance is mandatory. but class is let out early almost always.Just put in good effort in the daily responses (1-2 pgs) and get atleast B's on the 3 essays given and the one presentation in class. He boosts you one letter grade up only IF your attendance is perfect, responses get mostly pluses, and u did decently on essays. Take him :)
Great class and instructor! The reading and writing assignments in The Power of Myth and Dreams and Inward Journeys really make you think about the world in new ways. Mr. Sandel is very helpful teaching you good writing techniques. Keep up with all the work and attendance and you'll do very well.
Nice guy. For the beginning you mostly reference off the textbook. It was a really relaxed class, and in that way it was enjoyable. Class got let out early a lot of the times.
His grading is never easy. The highest grade in the class is B. Other people get lower. He only grades the first page and give you a lowest as possible letter for the score.
Very interesting readings, discussion topics and writing assignments. The class really expanded my critical thinking skills. He expects a lot of his students so goof-offs and slackers might want to try another instructor.
Great instructor and great class! He's passionate about literature and he encourages students to have their own opinions and interpretations. Great readings, discussions and lectures. Stay on top of the assignments if you want to do well.
He's a really nice professor! The only problem is is tone of voice, which puts me to sleep. His lectures are interesting, and he dives deep into the material, pointing out specifics. You really do learn, but you have to focus, two hours, no break in between but class lets out almost half an hour earlier usually. Easy class, hard grading for essays.
Very calm, relaxed, helpful professor. Nice class atmosphere that encourages participation and sharing ideas.
Mr. Sandel makes you think so show up to class with an open mind. Attendance is not mandatory because his syllabus is so clearly laid out, but it is recommended. Keep up with the reading and you will get an A.
Great class and teacher! I really enjoyed going. Books and handouts discuss topics such as religionmyth, equality, death, and god. Papers are due every class, but it was easy to do so long as you made a little effort to do them. You need to show up, or it WILL affect your grade. Final done at home. 2 or 3 in class essays. Stay awesome Mr. Sandel!
I took him for EWRT 2 in the summer and it was so easy that it was a joke. There was group work every day while he graded homework, then he would pass it back, talk for ten minutes, then dismisses us. When he grades essaysmidterms there are no markings and only puts the grade. If you want an A take him but don't expect to become a better writer
his essay assignments were pretty easy and showed me different views on religion and homosexuality. it was an interesting class even though it was a bit too easy.
The readings, writings and discussions really expand your thinking and perspectives on a lot of issues. He keeps the class challenging but collaborative.
He really made class interesting and a breeze. Definitely show up though! Homework every class, but it isn't too much. Class was just getting into groups and talking about the homework, then class discussion. He lets you choose the details for your essay, so you can write about what you care about. Loved his class and recommend him to everyone!
He was one of the best teachers I've ever taken a class with, and I loved his class. The subject was relevant to many current issues, and he teaches very well. Come with an open mind, and you won't regret taking this class. LOTS of reading, but not tough to get through,it was very interesting stuff.
Best English teacher i've taken so far! No tests, no quizzes! Just writing essays, which i enjoy doing. He gives a bump up if you attend and submit all assignments! What you'll basically do in class is get to groups and discuss, cool!
Hw is due every class, about 1-2 pages response to the reading he assigns you. Books are interesting to read. He doesn't lecture a whole lot, he let us interact with each other and brainstorm ideas. Great teacher, definitely would take again. I got an A even though I think I'm a terrible writer.
I've taken Sandel for 1A and 1B and I wish I could take more classes with him. The literary works we read were great, and after analyzing them with other students and with Sandel's input I realized there's so much more beneath the surface! His classes are always fun, challenging and bring out the best in students.
Don't let his looks and tone fool you - this guy is passionate when it comes to Shakespeare. Other than that,be prepared to read and write a lot. In terms of homework, they're mini essays that you turn in every class period. You have to be on top of your reading because I guarantee you, you will talk about it next class...
This is EWRT 1A so be prepared to do essays and written responses which are due every class.
Sandel requires students to turn-in 1-2-page essays discussing the reading assigned for every class period. While he takes much of the class time grading the essays, students are required to teach themselves by discussing the reading assignment in small groups and he gives a short discussion at the end of class. Very hard grader; A is rare.
Great class that really helps you to examine your own thinking process and to read and analyze other writer's works!
He's the best English professor I've ever had. Sandel makes the writing process fun and the group work really helps you understand the readings and helps your essay writing as well.
Isn't it funny that the few less-than raves on here are from people who complain about having to read and write and show up to class? It's college, people! This guy is a great professor who expects a lot of his students and inspires you in return. This is the 3rd class I've taken with Mr. Sandel and if I could take more, I would!
He gives students a good experience when it comes to literature learning (no joke). The only things that should be improved is his methods of grading (not enough detail to errors) and he takes a long time to mark your test papers. A bonus is the response requirement after each homework that can boost your grade :) (he never checks properly).
Hes a very nice guy. But your writing skills will not be improved by his class. His standards of writing and style is very high school. If you want a good grade in this class just write to the point of saturation, never mind its quaity. If you just write a lot you will get a good grade. He would make a better high school instructor.
It's a really tough class. He does not allow students to use very complex grammar. He just read the over all format of the essay. Also, just the things and grammar on the first page, and give you a grade. His class is very similar as a Public Speaking class. He asked you to have discussion every class. The discussion will spend most time of class.
He shud be your last opt. Very quantitative over qualitative prof. At one point we're tired of bs'ing in the assnmts and want to stick to the matter, even if its two lines. But you'll get a lower grade in that assnmt. In essays, he'll only write the grade which is harshly graded and when we ask him about where can we improve, he'd say something bs.
This class really opened up my mind and expanded my way of looking at complex issues. He really makes you think, and express those thoughts with detailed writing. You need to keep up with the reading and writing assignments to do well in the class (and it's pretty obvious that some of the negative comments came from people who don't wanna do that)
This was my 2nd class with Mr. Sandel and I wish I could take more with him. He's an easygoing guy who cares about his students and helps you to improve your thinking and writing skills.
I was dreading taking an English class, and I knew I would have a rough time regardless of the professor. That being said, I took this class when I was questioning my sexuality and the first time I came out publicly was in this class. Thank you, Professor Sandel, for creating the kind of environment I needed at the time.
Lots of reading and papers (one is due every class meeting). Strict on attendance and hw-- will drop you if you do not show up/turn in assignments after "x" amount of times. Class time is used for group/class discussions. B is almost guaranteed if you follow his syllabus. Writing skills did not improve much.
This has definitely been one of the best classes that I've taken at De Anza. Essays are a lot more enjoyable when they're on topics that interest you, and Mr. Sandel gives you a lot of freedom on what to write on.
This was my second class with Mr. Sandel and I wish that I could take more. The critical thinking skills that I started developing in 1A got a real workout in this class, and although I've never been great at English, my essay writing has improved a lot. Mr. Sandel keeps the subjects interesting and relevant to our lives today.
Loved this class! Teacher is very clear, assignments are graded at a reasonable time. I also love how well structured everything is.
Took Sandel as my first ERWT professor at De Anza, and it was definitely one of the first english classes I actually have enjoyed. The material he requires you to read is super insightful and isn't just some random knowledge thrown at you. Lots of room for questions and critical thinking! Do the work and you'll pass with an A!
Honestly his class was not hard at all as long as you put in the work. Yes there's lots of reading but that is to be expected in an English class. They weren't difficult to read at all, lots of responses and writing to them but trust me it wasn't hard to write reactions or responses to it. Only had about 3-4 essays the whole quarter.
There wasn't too much work for the class. Around 2 written assignments per week and films around every other week to watch. I believe there were around 3 essays. We read around one book and some passages from another book. As long as you put in the work and finish the assisgnments, it wasn't hard.
Second time taking this professor but for EWRT 2 this time. There's a lot of reading but was bearable and somewhat enjoyable in the end. A lot of writing as well--time manage and plan ahead and you'll be fine. Easy to communicate with, email backs fairly quickly, and he's understanding of outside conflicts that may affect assignments & due dates.
I took this class as a summer course, so the reading sections/ hw were more intensive since we had a shorter quarter. However, it was all still manageable if you manage your time well. Just read the materials and put some effort into the writing assignments and essays, and you should get a good gradeoverall, a good professor.
The class is passable as long as you pay very very close attention to the syllabus and directions. A little bit of a tough grader, but he will gladly meet with you to discuss what you did wrong and how you can improve. He also allows you to rewrite one of your essays, which is great because you can just fix what he told you to fix for an easy A.
Pretty easy class with a maximum of 2 written assignments per week. Most weeks we only had to turn in one 1-2 page response to a chapter of the textbook. I suggest you plan ahead for the weeks where 2 written assignments are due so you have enough time to revise your drafts. 2 4-page essays (3rd essay optional) and the final is a 6-page essay.
It was really hard specially at the end of the quarter I tried my best but he wants you to join workshop and do not turn in late work. i didn't pass but I did turn in assigments there a few essays and chapter journals.
Great professor. Gives good feedback and very straightforward. 1-2 page chapter responses and occasional 4 page essays. Book was very interesting.
This is a part time professor at De Anza that does not care about his students. He is not willing to be helpful in any way for guidance/feedback on assignments, and there is no rhyme or reason to his grading. Answer prompts in statement format within each paragraph. That writing is vomit inducing, but it is required If you want a good grade.
Not a bad professor for Mythology and Folklore, he is a bit boring/bland, but genuinely not bad. Uses books that can be rented from the bookstore (still costs a lot), your grade depends on your homework and essays. Attendance is not mandatory, but the 'lectures' he gives if you DO attend don't provide much insight so you're better off skipping.
He has not given feedback once but expects you to understand what you did wrong based on little to no input. He gave vague prompts for the essays but didn't accept even minor interpretations of those prompts—write based on *PRECISELY* what is written in the prompt, with no creativity. This is unhelpful in furthering college-level writing/analysis.
Professor Sandel runs a straightforward class with interesting reading material and manageable writing assignments. The textbook is helpful, and attending lectures is a must. Unstuck ai proved to be a valuable companion for preparing for essays and staying on top of the workload.
This is frankly the laziest professor ever. He requires you to have a physical textbook and have assignments due from that textbook within one week of him announcing the class. 40-60 pages of reading a week on top of 3-4 pages of written response due (excluding his essays). His instructions are vague and his grading is picky. Don't take it.
Teacher doesn't give feedback and doesn't even respond to emails some of the time. Instructions are very vague and somewhat confusing. Very strict grader, and doesn't tell you what to improve on, just gives the grade out, and AGAIN, doesn't respond when you ask for feedback on what to improve on.
The grading criteria are very unclear. Even if he didn't tell you, you'd better use MLA format. The due date is 11 p.m., not 11:59 p.m. This professor is part-time, and he doesn't care if you learn anything. He just grading essays. That's it.
DO NOT LISTEN TO THE 4.0 RATING, it is no longer true for his online class. All assignments have very broad instructions which can lead to bad scores, if he deems you off the criteria. Assignments are tedious and worth little points so it is hard to bring up grades. When given a bad score, he gives little to no feedback that is actually useful.
I don't believe the high ratings are authentic. Lectures were seven minutes of him repeating his own vague instructions. Ignored emails, comments, and was disrespectful in responses to papers of my own and other students. Would mark you down for reasons he couldn't remember. Least professional professor I've ever encountered. Seems like a grifter.
This teacher is not it. Firstly, the way the class is formatted is not good at all. Every assignment is only worth 5 points, so if you BARELY mess up on one of the homework then your grade would do down like 3%. He's so unclear on instructions too. Please don't trust the rating, save yourself from his class.
This professor was absolutely awful. Assignments are based on a 5 point grading system, and he'll give lower scores without providing feedback on what you were missing in order to improve. Instructions to each assignment are vague, not much of a clear rubric. Only truly grades essays, but even then the feedback is useless. Do NOT take!
Summer EWRT1A async: def review the syllabus thoroughly. Late essays get zeroes, but criteria for grading is neatly laid out (ex: paragraph length, pg #s, etc). Max 2 of 1-2 pg assignments per week all based on one book (honestly just reflections on chapters). Three essays, but one is just a rewrite. Very straightforward and gave decent feedback.
The course is 100% online and the instructor has designed it very well with all of the resources you need to become a critical thinker and to succeed in the class. The reading and writing assignments are stimulating but not too difficult as long as you put in the time and effort. The recorded lectures are also very helpful.
This online course was well organized and well paced and the readings, including Joseph Campbell's "The Power of Myth," were really enjoyable and relevant to my life. Sandel's personality comes through in the recorded lectures, and his encouraging comments on my essays helped me to become a much better writer.
This was a great class, focusing on myth and folklore from around the world. This professor really knows his stuff and his lectures are very insightful, focusing on diverse cultures and why myth is so important to our lives. The reading and writing assignments are a lot of fun and he gives insightful, supportive feedback on the essays.
