good prof, amusing examples, and helpful if you go to office hours. you'll do fine if you go to lecture, which was too early in the morning this quarter, but it helps that he's cute. work hard on your papers (and get a good ta) and you'll do fine. and if you have trouble reading messy handwriting just...try to pay attention to what he says. :)
New teacher, you can totally tell, taught the subject reasonable well, read the text and you'll understand everything, papers are reasonable and so is the final
great lecturer. go to class, pay attention and work hard on papers.
Professor Sennet is enthusiastic about what he teaches. He is just starting to teach, so his lectures will probably get more organized and clear in time. He has got heart, an unusual characteristic in professors. He encourages participation in the class.
He's sooooo H-O-T....and informative, but who cares when he's such eyecandy :D. he's really adorable and tries to be amicable and completely succeeds in it :D
He seemed like a grad student at the beginning of the course but very easy to see that he is very knowledgable and friendly
Professor Sennet is really cute, friendly, laidback and more than willing to help you. But as a professor he has more than his share of shortcomings. Give it a few years, maybe once he figures out the material he can teach the rest of us.
He's a good professor in the sense that he's extremely laidback; He's a bad professor also because he's extremely laidback. His little jokes, balding head and tight-fitting clothes make him adorable to watch teach. If you stop and pay attention thought you'll find he's lectures are very disorganized, but his grading is more than fair.
An excellent professor. He is super clear and interesting. His classes are fun and informative. I would definitely take any class taught by him. And he's super HOT!
He's a great professor! He has a laid back but enthusiastic style of teaching and is very helpful in answering questions. Not to mention eye candy.
Nice intro class. Adam is wicked awesome. He a chill teacher, and knows his material. He is able to relate to the students as he is probably no more than a decade older than most of us! His Canadian accent and silly examples are enjoyable. Tests and paper are pretty easy
Awesome! Adam is a wicked cool teacher and made philosophy super interesting. Funny examples! He's laid back, young, and dresses nice too ;) Oh but he writes kind of sloppy, so just pay attention to what he's saying or sit up close. No required reading by the way! :D
this class is pretty easy. No reading at all for this class! There's one short paper, a midterm and final- and they're all pretty easy. This class is interesting but it gets repetitive; he explains the topics over and over again, so you'll understand everything- if not, discussion helps a lot. Overall, very laid back class :)
If you want an easy A, take this class. Lectures are like a big discussion and class is very chill. You don't need a textbook or any reading. Just attend class, take notes, and you're good. He handwrites his notes on the board, so it can be a bit messy.
One of my best philosophy professors. The material was kind of challenging, but he made it very understandable, and I really enjoyed his funny examples. Easy to talk to in office hours, and he grades reasonably. Overall a good class!
Good lecturer as the class is more like a big discussion than a lecture. Most of the time is spent with him answering questions from students which is good in clarifying the sometimes complex topics. However, he tends to be disorganized but he is a young guy so it makes sense. Overall, a very EASY class! NO textbook! What more could you want?
He's a funny, young guy. The lectures are fun because people tend to question the topics, and he shoots them down. There's no required reading so attending lectures and discussion sections is highly recommended, if you want a good grade. If not just go and hope he says the letter Z. It's an interesting class and you'll understand "The Matrix".
interesting class, good at teaching PHI 001
Professor Sennet is a great professor and actually makes the topics seem interesting. Just make sure you go to lecture everyday since there is no textbook and lecture outlines. He does not use smartsite or the ucdavis website to post anything. He also does not post grades on any of the grading systems. A syllabus is pretty much all you get.
Prof. Sennet is a great professor for the Phi 1 class. I took the class in my 1st quarter as a GE and loved it. The course is relatively easy - graded items are Discussion participation, 2 short essays, and the final. Depending on TA grading getting a B or higher should be simple. No HW or reading, but you must go to class!
Adam is a wonderful professor. He is very knowledgeable and he makes the topics very interesting. Two essays and a final. This class is super easy, just go to lecture. The final is pretty straight forward as well. Great GPA booster!
my favorite class for the fall quarter =) it's very interesting
Sennet's class was very interesting and an enjoyable experience. The class has only two essays and a final, so I never quite knew how I was doing. As long as you go to class and talk to your TAs, you should be able to get an A. Only con is that he is terrible at writing notes, so keep your ears alert so you note everything he says.
Adam Sennet is the man. He is hilarious in class cause he gave me the suspicion he doesnt even know what he's talking about. He's especially not afraid to put students int their place in philosophical arguments. I fell asleep and didnt try and got a solid B. No reading or HW at all in this class. MUST TAKE for 4 easy units.
I sit near the front, probably the only way you can read his writing.Nice guy, good grasp of topic.Answers everything gladly.Talks a little fast, doesn't use powerpoint (but he's still organized). He uses good examples, and knows how to fish out the right answers. Plus he's very funny. I'd take it again if I didn't know I was passing already.
He writes nonsensical scribbles on the board so yo have to pay attention the whole time. No homework and textbook (at all). Just attend all lectures and section and you'll probably do fine. TAs grade essays harshly
You definitely have to attend class and pay attention. I loved this class. It was super chill and not hard at all - only 2 papers and a final. No reading or homework or book. Adam is awesome and very personable, but his handwriting is chicken scratch. He spends a lot of time arguing with students in the class.
Overall, a decent teacher. He has terrible writing, but class isnt mandatory so you might find yourself not attending every one. The only work for this class are 2 essays and a final (essay in class). I had a great TA who really made my experience so I would recommend it. The grading was fair, but this class isnt necessarily an easy A.
This class is NOT an easy A! You have to work for it..No textbook, which is good, but it also means that you better go to lecture and write down notes. Two Essays and 1 final.. Professor seems a little lazy (doesn't give you a study guide or anything like that). For essays, CLARITY is really important:)
Terrible handwriting and no textbooks so it sucks to be not able to read his handwriting in lecture. Worst Handwriting in the world.
not an easy A class but it depends on your TA for that. You learn how to cater your essays to the grader if anything. Really interesting class and Sennet is really good at explaining the basics of philosophy. Class was always a joy to go to.
Funny Professor. He's great to listen to and look at. Likes to challenge students and writes really crappy on the board. : ) Grading depends on your TA, I had a great TA who was really helpful and clarified anything and everything that was discussed in class. However, most of the information can be found online for your papers. ; )
Very nice professor who will spend as much time as needed (sometimes too much) going over concepts.
Professor Sennet babbles.. he's a smart, nice guy, but he's not a good teacher. He tries hard but is ineffective. There's no structure in his class
No book + no ppts used + no podcasts= go to lecture. He goes over main concepts which was cool. But class argues too much and since he wants everyone to understand the material, he actually spends a ton of time arguing back. Just 2 essays and a short answer final. My TA gave us all the info. we needed for the essays so I thought the class was easy.
No textbook, so all your information about this class comes from lectures. He was good at explaining, but lots of time was spent between him and students arguing. You are graded on 2 essays and a final. Grade depends on your TA for essays. Final was kind of easy.
Had a couple of his classes. He's funny as hell, and naturally kind to everyone. Really smart, but not arrogant. He goes fast in explaining things sometimes, but when he doesn't, his discussions are clear and well broken down. Likes originality in your writing. But his tests are confusing.Very cute fellow, and probably an all around good guy.
Very funny, charismatic dude, but he isn't a very good teacher. His lectures are not very conducive to learning the material, and there is no textbook. Discussion is mandatory and can actually help. 2 short papers with easy prompts, and a T/F and short answer final. Your grade depends entirely on your TA. Mine was good. Not a great class, but easy.
Excellent professor. Helps students connect with the material and encourages us to form our own opinions. Answers questions clearly, especially considering that it's a philosophy class. Inspires independent/continued learning in linguistic philosophy. Also, a very easy man to look at for an hour.
Adam Sennet is a better philosopher than teacher. We didn't use a textbook, and class consisted solely of him explaining philosophical concepts. This was cool, as Adam is adept at breaking down complex ideas - but he tolerates idiotic questions too much, which detracts from the value of the class. Going to office hours is very rewarding.
This class is easy and has no readings which makes it great to supplement a hard schedule. Sennet is interesting and clear. He likes to take a lot of questions, which can be annoying but honestly just draws out the class because there is so little material. Take it though! I loved it and I did learn a good deal.
Topic was boring and most of the class sleeps in there. He writes like chicken scratch and very lightly so try to get a seat in the front. Only 2 papers which is doable and a final that consists of T/F questions and a couple short response. An A is possible if you actually try.
If you miss class you'll miss details, but you'll be fine if you understand major topics. Reviews every class He tries really hard to make you understand but sometimes has trouble explaining He is quite disorganized with notes and class structure Does not clearly state what is being discussed But will answer questions thoroughly and is very helpful
AWESOME Professor! super cute ;)
Adam a great guy and likes to answer a lot of questions. That is all good but most of the time he does not go over all the material. This causes the students to be unprepared for the essays. The textbook that he wrote is "optional" but if you take this class BUY THE BOOK. His note is literally chicken scratch and a word which he talks about it.
never went to class to my into to phi- only discussion. bought the book and dd fine. email me milea61@yahoo if you would like to get the e-book half price! its awesome to follow along if you do go to class or is mandatory to have if you don't
I loved his class, it was one of my first classes here as a freshman and I can honestly say I enjoyed it. There was so much to learn and the way Adam Sennet taught it was very helpful. I am definitely looking into more classes that will be taught by him.
Adam is fantastic, had him for Phi102 as well, and will attempt to take more classes from him when possible. Very friendly, very knowledgeable. He's a great lecturer, talking the entire time without getting too lost. The subject matter can be difficult and hard to explain, but he does about a good a job at it as I feel can reasonably be expected.
This is one of those classes where the professor doesn't matter because the TA is the person who determines your grade. It wasn't hard, but my TA was really picky and took a month to grade everything. Class sucks because it is just students asking questions, and Dr. Sennet barely goes over any material. I wouldn't recommend this as humanities clas
The class was interesting. Professor Sennet explains the concepts in an engaging way. The concepts can be abstract at times though. Make sure to get the text; it was extremely helpful. Grade based on two papers and a final.
One of the absolute best philosophy professors at Davis. He's so approachable and down to earth and he does a great job of explaining complicated ideas. I loved this class. The material is pretty difficult. Don't take it if you're not interested. And definitely don't take it if you've never taken a philosophy class before.
The class itself was easy. Grades are determined by your TA on participation in discussion, two essays, and a final exam. Sennet's lectures, unfortunately, don't teach as well as your TA and the ebook (optional, but recommended). He makes himself available during office hours if you're interested; he'll look over your papers, too.
It's an interesting topic (kind of difficult not to be), and the readings for the most part were also. The class itself isn't difficult, but it does require reading the material. The professor is really approachable. His drawings suck, but he's obviously intelligent and makes difficult concepts clear. Very helpful-one of the best I've ever had.
His lectures were hard to follow at times and taking notes is crucial but sometimes difficult. He provides no visual supplement to his chicken scratch writings on the board. The tests were tricky and would have been close to impossible if they were not openbook. The class was interesting, but harder than I expected.
No book, no homework. Two essays and interesting lectures.
This course changed my life. I am now want to be a philosophy major! Take his class, very helpful and nice!
I think this is an awful class. Do not ever take it. There are no lecture notes, no slides, he has awful hand writing and contradicts everything he says. If you need to see visuals for a class-- this is not for you!!!! It requires you to be a very good listener on things that do not even exist in life and are pointless.
Adam himself was confusing and his writing didn't help either. Learned more from my TA than I did from actually going to lectures.
Lectures are kind of confusing so I started to only go once a week after a while. Your TA determines your grade, and my TA was awesome and I learned a lot from him since Adam was pretty confusing at times. Taking notes is difficult in this class. 2 essays, T/F + short response final. If you put in some effort then you will be fine and get an A.
Lectures are pretty much pointless as long as you have the book and read it a week before your essays are do and the final and you'll get an A.
Sennet is okay, the first week of class I got the impression he didn't know anything. Two essays and a final. Essays were easy got A's on both. Final I got 100% just true false and two short essay. Didn't buy the book you can learn everything in class. Its fairly easy semi-interesting, he does a good job of explaining and will answer all questions.
Sennet is okay. Seriously. Just barely. Seems like a chill guy but contradicts himself a lot. Doesn't know everything on the subject at hand but he tries. 2 Midterms. 1 Essay. 1 Final. All you really need to do is not take this class if he is the one teaching it.
The person below probably doesn’t know what a contradiction is. Sennet's really good! he encourages discussions in class and he’s genuinely interested in what you say. The tests are a little challenging, but read the materials and you'll do fine. His writing is reeally awful but that’s my only real gripe with him.he looks super young. Really cute ;)
As a professor he's not that bad, but the class is NOT an easy one, unless you're really into philosophy. Despite the 2 midterms and final being online and open note, many questions were tricky and unclear, and you could easily do badly if you miss a few. Essay is not so bad. His handwriting is awful, so pay lots of attention and write good notes.
He goes on and on about the topic, so half the class would be asleep 20 minutes into the class. His handwriting is chicken scratch, so don't rely on just looking on the board every now and then
Record lecture and don't take notes in class. Go home, listen then take notes. No mandatory reading which is good (less work)bad (hard to study). Every aspect of the class is based on his lectures alone so it would not be a good idea to skip lecture. 2 essays that are super simple (3 pg. minimum). No midterm. 2 papers + final.
I liked the course content and when I read it from the book, it made a lot more sense than in his lectures. I'd recommend buying the online book and splitting the cost with friends. My TA, Jarom, was helpful and a nice person, but unusually strict in grading (especially in terms of definitions) in comparison to other TAs.
Sennet is a legend. Watching him bounce into class at least 2 minutes every time was a joy to watch. Most of the topics were fairly interesting but Sennet's rapid speech speed and terrible handwriting always made me want to take a nap instead of focus. Your grade depends on your TA, and I honestly have no idea how my TA is even allowed to be a TA.
This was my first philosophy class, and I really wish I hadn't taken it without first taking an easier philosophy class. The material is really complicated, and kinda interesting. Adam explains it about as clearly as he can given the complexity, but lectures drag on because the material is dry.
Must attend lecture. Must understand the material (not memorize). No hw except for 2 papers (3-4 pgs). No midterm. For the final he gave us choices for what to answer (e.g. 5 questions, answer 3). I personally thought Sennet explained the material clearly, but it just sounded crazy bc phi itself is crazy. Just listen, don't try to read the board
I definitely would not take this class again if given the chance. The ideas are all over the place, and I had no idea what was going on at least 90% of the time. His writing is completely illegible so you'd have to be paying attention for every single second of class. Your grade depends on how lenient your TA is.
Sennet is a funny guy, and he makes the material interesting. There is no reading and no homework, just a lecture and a final, and two papers. This class is ridiculously easy and as long as you half pay attention in class and go into office hours to get feedback on your papers, you'll get an easy A. His writing is illegible however, so take notes.
This class isnt the worst class I have ever taken but I wish I had a different professor. Sennet is boring and hard to understand. He rambles a lot about many different topics in one class and he writes like a kindergartener. His handwriting is small enough to fit on college ruled paper and looks like chicken scratch. Sit in the front to read it!!
Easy A if you show up, listen, and be interested (and if you're not, tell yourself you are). The online textbook is a really good buy because Sennet's writing is really bad, and the the descriptions are more clear-cut in the book. Show up to office hours for papers, participate in class, and make sure Sennet knows your name and you'll do well.
I put little effort in the class but still got an A. Depending on the TA, your grade may depend on participation. The final was extremely easy, and I was able to finish in 30 minutes. There were 2 essays, both doable. I recommend this class if you're interested in philosophy. If not, it may be extremely boring.
Interesting class, easy open book quizzes and extra credit. Put enough effort into it and you can get an A. Even if you slack off I have a hard time imagining getting anything lower than a B. Lectures all online and no textbook. Highly recommend this class to up your GPA, and fill GEs reqs
This class was a bit shaky because it was brand new. It was online and there were some glitches, but I ended up with over 100% so it was easy. There is a quiz every week, one paper, a midterm and final. All the tests are online, so they are pretty tough, but find a study buddy and you're good to go.
There are 2 papers assigned in this class (50% of grade) in which the grades are completely determined by your TA. They also tell you its really hard to get A's on the papers. 10% of grade is participation. If you don't go to lecture, get yourself the textbook cause you can't read what he writes on the board. 40% of your grade is a difficult final.
Lectures are always super interesting and he will never lose your interest. Of course, his writing can use come improvement, but anyone who knows anything about philosophy can tell you that it's all in your head anyway. Great professor who is genuinely interesting in sharing his information with the class.
It is impossible to take notes in Sennet's class due to his small and illegible handwriting. Going to class isn't necessary; just be prepared to ask questions in discussion until you understand. It's not hard to pass but if you want an A you need to Ace both papers(50%) and final (93% is an A ). If you invest in textbook you're golden.
I would recommend for Phil 01, easy GE. No midterms or readings! 2 short straight forward papers and a final. Go to all lectures and discussions, pay attention to what your TA expects for the papers, you'll be set. Lots of topics/examples mentioned in lecture, but final is only on major topics, he doesn't try to trick you.
Bad at explaining things and very detached from his students. His TAs are just as disinterested in the subject as he is, and he tends to take forever on simple philosophical concepts. Avoid taking this class with him as a teacher if you've never had a background in Philosophy.
Sennett seemed nice, but I barely attended lecture, it was boring, hard to hear, and his writing is illegible, what he covered in 3 hours the TA - Jarom Longhurst covered in under 50 min. Class was easy and fun because of the TA, a tough grader, but very organized. Two papers (3-5 pages), plus a final exam which was 40% of grade.
Long but interesting lectures. Cool dude, laid back, not strict. TAs help tremendously (shout out to Jacob Velasquez). Easiest final ever (do 10 out of 13 T/F questions and then 2 out of 4 short response questions). Only 2 papers due in this course, not too difficult or long. Looks like an older Wendell from Bones. Bad handwriting but he knows that
The online lectures are very clear and concise. The discussion section is not mandatory but helps clarify concepts from lecture. The online quizzes and tests are not too difficult if you did the work required. There is a two page paper mid-quarter. The prompt is interesting and grading is easy.
Great teacher, great class. Easy and very interesting. Should be required for all college students.
Reading material was exceptionally interesting. Short Quiz every week, Midterm, Final, and Short Paper, all done online. Tests based off of readings, not too hard. Paper a bit trickier, TA is a tough grader on that one. Lectures easy to follow. No textbook.
Prof. Sennet is awesome. Super relatable and he makes philosophy fun. Everyone needs to take a class with him!!! Weekly quizzes, one midterm, one final, one short paper. All of which are online. Hopefully he teaches forever!
Super easy hybrid class. I went to none of the discussions. I probably could've gotten 100% in the class if I put in more than an ounce of effort. Weekly multiple choice quizzes (dropped lowest one, 20% total), one multiple choice midterm (20%) one paper (30%), and a multiple choice final (30%). All assignments online.
Super straight forward and easy class. I like that I didn't need to attend a lecture and can do lectures whenever you want. Weekly quizzes very easy, and midterms and finals straight from the quiz questions! Totally recommend and this professor and his TA's are super chill.
The professor himself is okay. Lectures are boring, his hand writing is absolutely horrible. My T.A. expected too much of us and graded way to harshly, if they're then it doesn't even matter if you try. If you think you understand the concepts if your wrong then your grade WILL suffer. Don't bother with this class unless it's your major
His handwriting is terrible, and his lectures are super-confusing and all over the place; not attending them will actually do more good to you. The papers are straight-forward with clear grading criteria, and if you get a good TA (like I did), you will do just fine. The final exam covers A LOT of concepts.
Loved this class! Super easy and stress free-your grade is 2 papers and the final. I would definitely recommend buying an access code to his online book though because it helps you review if you were confused in the lecture. Loved going to lecture because Sennet is super funny and chill and really makes you think.
Sennet is a very fun and likeable professor. Two short papers and a final is what determines your grade. Sure, his handwriting isn't the best, but he explains things clearly so taking notes is no problem. He makes lecture fun! It can suck if your TA grades tough like mine, but that is not Sennet's fault. Would take him again!
Best professor out there by far!
Adam was a wonderful professor! Please take him. I highly recommend. I wish I could take him again. Go to lecture, it's fun. It's intellectual nourishment. He's funny and intelligent and the class was very do-able. We had about two papers and a final, that was it. And the final wasn't too bad. Was maybe the funnest class I took my first quarter.
Very cool guy & passionate about philosophy. Really makes sure students understand material. 2 simple take home papers & 1 simple final (more like a quiz than final). Easy to fall asleep in class, would not recommend if not very interested in philosophy. Pay close attention and you'll be fine. Get the book if hard to pay attention, helped me pass.
Don't really need to get the textbook if you go to lectures; alternatively, you could skip lectures if you got the textbook. Going to discussions also helps a lot, and is required anyway. Some concepts can be confusing, but he covered a lot of stuff twice, which helped. His handwriting is pretty bad, though.
Sennet is great teacher. Cares about students success. To pass must read online reader provided. Also must attend lecture and record lectures to write essays well. easy A if you at least try and dont half a-- it, like i did (still got an A- though) Majority of points in essays and final, so write essays well and make flashcards for key concepts
I LOVE HIM! Highly recommend this teacher. He is really funny and nice and you can learn a lot from his class. He is not a tough grader. His online class is well-organized. If you want to take fun online classes, definitely take this one.
The material was rather challenging, but overall pretty interesting. Sennet is great at explaining complex concepts. Pretty laid back atmosphere, pleasant class to attend. There was one optional essay questions take home midterm and/or a required 6-8 page final paper. Great professor.
GET THE BOOK!! I tried to save money by not buying the book, big mistake. I still passed, but I would have done a lot better and understood the lectures if I had read before hand. The grade was based on two papers and the final, so you must do well on the papers. These were not too bad but still go to office hours for help if you are confused.
Get the textbook! It will save you and everything on the final is in the textbook. Also, the papers are not too hard as long as you go to class and pay attention to what he is lecturing about! Pretty easy GE and would suggest taking.
He's a pretty good lecturer and he encourages questions and it's always nice that he does recap and repeat himself a lot. He has this online textbook which is basically the holy grail of this class because your grade is based on two drafts of one essay, another essay, and then the final. There's no midterm and the prompts are pretty simple.
Dr. Sennet isloved by all his TAs and makes everyone want to participate in class. His lectures are mostly examples of the topics not definitions of the topics. His textbook is really helpful! Take notes in a notebook not on a computer cause he does a lot of diagrams. 2 essays as midterms and a final. Take notes and stdying for the final will be ez
He is a great professor. I suggest not missing the lectures because he does not require the class to buy a book, so if you miss lecture good luck. Though I would buy the book it helps.
By the third week most people dont show up. Final is difficult.
Professor answers almost all questions during lecture which can make the class drag on for a bit depending on what type of questions are asked. Despite that, class gives a good insight to philosophy.
Highly recommend taking this class as a GE. Interesting, fun, and almost astoundingly easy. All my friends are jealous when I talk about this class. DO IT!!!
I took this class with Sennet as an easy GE, and it was a really great opportunity. There is only a few papers that you have to do (like three) and then the rest of the grade is just your final, which is kind of scary since there is no curve. The only bad part about the class is that theres not really a textbook unless you but access to his ebook.
Sennet's class was organized and run by a very good TA, Megan Parks. Sennet provides the online lectures, and Parks runs the mandatory 50 minute discussions that are once a week. Only one online 6 problem quiz a week based off of the online lectures and reading (basically readings). You have to write 1 paper; just put in effort and you'll do fine.
Lectures were sub-optimal with his terrible handwriting. Plan to come early and sit in the first 4-5 rows, or hope that you can hear everything he says crystal clear. Papers were easy with the TA's guidance.
Attendance for discussion (not lecture) counts for your grade (10%). There are two essays in total and I recommend going to your TA for feedback on drafts, it really helps. In lectures, Sennet would answer all questions and relate abstract topics to real-life. (His handwriting is slightly hard to read though.) Overall, an interesting class!
Professor Sennet was a great lecturer with horrible handwriting, so make sure you pay attention and listen in during lectures. Essays weren't that bad, as long as you'd put a little effort into them, you'd be able to earn a B. The final exam was pretty easy with multiple choice questions and a few short answer. All in all, it's an insightful class.
The lecture structure was hard to follow and disorganized, and if I hadnt had an amazing TA, I would have failed this class. The 2 papers are short (3 pages) and easy if you understand the material. The final has fill in the blank, multiple choice, and short answer and was relatively simple if you actually study.
the class is only composed of two papers and the final. bomb the papers and you bomb the class. the class and professor was all over the place and i never understood what he said in class. i would have to look at notes and research topics on my own (but have to attend class to know what topics to teach urself). final wasn't hard but def study hard
He is an amazing professor. go to the lectures and you will easily pass the class.
Since this class is a hybrid and we only meet once a week for discussion with our TA, I do not have much to personally say about Professor Sennet. His online lectures are a bit boring but they get the job done. The class is extremely easy and pretty interesting.
PHI 7Y- Easiest class ever. Its a hybrid class so everything is online except the discussions (once a week). Youre graded on mult choice quizzes (6 questions a week, unlimited attempts), a super easy paper (the lowest score in the class was 70%), discussions (you can miss one or two), and a multiple choice online final (also unlimited attempts)
easiest hybrid class you'll take. weekly unlimited attempt quizzes. one three page paper, super easy. TA are easy/helpful with the paper. one final which is also unlimited attempt and you can take it as many times as you want for a week, only downside you dont know what you get right away. i put the lectures on 2 speed bc boring/useless. got an A,
A very good class. Recommend every who needs DD GE credit to take.
Super easy course, unlimited attempts on weekly quizzes and 1 paper. Discussion attendance is mandatory. Final was a combination of quizzes.
He talks so fast and the handwriting is so poor that you can barely catch up on the lectures. You will just sit there for gaining nothing.
Attendance for discussion sections is mandatory. We had weekly quizzes with unlimited attempts, 1 paper, and a multiple-choice final. I didn't get to meet Professor Sennet in-person, but his recorded lectures were well-organized and he provided a lot of interesting materials for us to read. An insightful and manageable class!
The weekly quiz does NOT have unlimited attempt, 1 submission only, lowest one dropped.
10 quiz, 1 midterm, 1 final, 1 paper. Weekly recorded videos are short but information-dense. Wrote 2 pages of notes for a 15-minute lecture.
Weekly discussion is mandatory regardless of online or in-person. Each quiz/exam is one attempt only, so stop dreaming of unlimited attempts. If you take this solely to pursue an A and think it is very easy, please get out and drop.
Discussion is mandatory. See Adam only an hour per week in office hour. All the content in readings and surveys were covered in weekly quizzes. You will get different questions from peers. There is a quiz question bank.
The week with paper due was mixed with the most amount of reading, which means quiz and paper were due on the same Sunday. He totally had not sympathy to extend either.
He started giving unlimited attempts to quiz since week 9. Paper's deadline was extended. Peer review was essential for participation grade.
10 quiz, 1 paper, 1 three-page final, participation. Adam explained things clearly in Playposit videos. Please stop cheating in the weekly 6-point quiz. Average got as high as 5.9 which was crazy. Every student really learned this well?
Attend discussion and complete paper draft peer review in order to earn full participation scores. Paper average was around 22/25.
This class is great and has a lot of useful knowledge. The final exam had an astonishing average score of 48.7 out of 50. Do you think every student learned materials this well? Think about it.
There are many reading materials, but many students find the "quick" way to get full credits in quiz. Cheating in quiz was everywhere. Useful material but he can use higher cutoff to deter cheating.
Adam is clearly passionate about the philosophy of language and lectures were interesting. Slightly disorganized though, notetaking and reading the materials before class helps. Graded on an optional midterm (50%) and a final paper (50/100%). I recommend going to OH to discuss midterm/paper outlines + reviewing symbol logic.
Had weekly quizzes worth a good portion of our grade but as long as you read, you'll do well. His final was a cumulation of the weekly quizzes combined. The paper was by far the most interested paper I've written in any of my classes so far, very philosophical and interesting. Would definitely recommend this class if you need a boost for gpa.
Probably my most favorite class that I have ever taken at Davis. The material was super interesting, and I felt like I actually learned something new and useful to become a better person. Lectures were short. Quizzes based off readings. I LOVED talking and discussing about various topics that were covered. Easy final. 10/10 would recommend.
Very interesting and engaging class, weekly readings could be a little long sometimes but were doable. Lectures were basically a recap of the main points from the readings, no need to take notes if you do the readings. Definitely an easy and interesting GE.
He was a pretty cool dude, and he didnt make the class too hard. Mostly all of the material was super interesting. Discussions were always interesting and engaging. Get ready to read though; weekly readings can get kind of long, but skimming will get you the main points.
Lectures were online videos (self-paced) and discussion was in person. 1 quiz a week. Quizzes and final on canvas. 30% quizzes (10 total), 30% paper (3 pages), 30% final, and 10% participation (2 questions about the reading in diss). Loved the class and it was super interesting. I enjoyed the weekly lecture videos and they were easy to understand.
Really nice guy but tends to lecture fairly fast. Optional midterm, weekly quizzes, and final paper. Quizzes were 15% while the paper was 85% w/out the midterm. What he wants wasnt really properly defined imo, our instructions for the paper were less than a paragraph and expectations werent clear. Id say, be sure to ask for clarification if needed
Adam is a very good lecturer. He is clearly knowledgable, and explains things well. He is a little disorganized on canvas. And his handwriting is so bad and explanations on the board are so hard to keep track of that if you dont pay attention for a few minutes, you will be lost. But Adam is patient and approachable. The class was very difficult.
7 quizzes (2 dropped) 15%, optional midterm (35%), final paper(50%, 85% if you skipped the midterm). Prof. Sennet is friendly but disorganized and lectures are fast and easy to get lost in. Class material is really hard. Make sure to actually read, ask questions in OHs and spend lots of time on the final paper. Brush up on your symbol logic.
Easy A but can't learn anything. If you just want an A then he is your choice. If you want to learn something useful in a GE class, don't go with him.
One quiz every week, one paper, and then final. The paper was hard and you don't get any feedback so you just get a grade and that's that. The TAs graded the paper and we didn't get much guidance from the TA in our section so it depends on TA you get. Overall was super easy class.
Class was extremely boring, but an easy A. Didn't watch lectures or do the readings since all quiz and final answers are on quizlet. Discussion was graded by providing 2 questions in response to the reading, but I just skimmed over the papers quickly. Essay was graded pretty hard. Make sure you ask the TA for what they are looking for exactly.
I loved the topics in this class and my TA was amazing, so I did all the readings even though you really don't have to to get an A. Weekly MC quizzes and a final, but the answers are on Quizlet. The only slight curveball is the paper, since there's no opportunity for feedback, but overall an easy and interesting GE that I learned a lot from!
Professor Sennet is passionate about the subject they teach, however, that unfortunately does not transfer over to their teaching style. The learning objectives are not clear and lectures are muddled monologues with no outline or clear learning goals. Expect to teach your self, praise the TAs. Direction and organization in this course is lacking.
Hybrid class so the lectures are pre-recorded by Sennet. They were a bit dry, but you can definitely tell that he knows the subject well. The topics are interesting though, and the weekly readings were dense at times but my TA was great at explaining them. The essay is a bit hard because of vague guidelines, but regardless it was a cool class.
He has the worst time management skills and communication skills. Had 2 papers due in a span of the last week of the quarter, unclear grading criteria, and terrible TA's. I never got emailed back from a TA all quarter long despite all of my attempts. No lecture capture so class "recordings" were grainy and impossible to hear. No resources at all.
The class was very unorganized and lectures were often unclear and vague. I was only able to understand the material through my TA. The midterms and final were VERY unorganized, and it was frustrating as it was a big percentage of the final grade. Thought it was an easy A based on past reviews, but changed to P/NP quickly into the quarter.
While the class isn't hard, the professor refuses to make slides and the chicken scratch on the chalkboard is difficult to read. He would often go on random tangents. Very nice guy, the lectures are just a drag and hard to follow along. The discussion sections are where most learning for the course is done.
Our quarter was a little rough (TA strike), but Prof. Sennett handled it well, adjusting our class and supporting UAW at the same time, which made me happy to see. My class was an intro class, and he definitely understood that- his goal for us was just to get us thinking about philosophy. Attendance: mandatory for discussion but not lecture.
He was accommodating during the TA strike. Originally there were 2 papers and a final, but he cancelled the second paper completely. During lectures he gets kinda sidetracked which can cause confusion but if you attend discussion (mandatory) the TAs clarify the lecture. Final exam is online but his questions are super confusing and hard to pass
This course's quizzes were created in such a way to make you lose points. The wording was ambiguous and often misleading. Readings can be extensive based on the week. Once we had 70 pages worth of assigned reading. However, the weekly quizzes were not always dependent on the readings and the midterm was dropped. Overall a frustrating class to take.
10 weekly quizzes 1 lowest would be dropped. attendance for discussion, and a 50 questions online final. The content taught is helpful, but not very significant, you still need to spend a long time studying on your own, our TA is awesome, makes discussion worth to listen, and overall is a hard course. you can still try if you want online GE course
Each week has one test with 10 questions, and will drop the lowest one at final, if u get a lot of friends, it is an easy A.
this class made me not want to take philosophy classes in the future. his lectures were okay- but the quizzes were a step up and really tricky sometimes. it was really difficult to figure out some of the questions that were really convoluted. it helped that the final was a combination of past quiz questions. wish the quizzes were unlimited attempts
Didn't meet him once but he seems nice. The class is easy to get an A in if you manage to make lots of friends in the class. The quizzes themselves can be pretty confusing sometimes, from the way they're worded, but thats a personal preference. Discussion was really interesting due to the topics discussed. I'd recommend the class if you have time.
Dr. Sennet is nice. His lectures were long and could be boring, but he was always able to answer questions in depth which was helpful. The class is graded based on an essay draft, two essays and a final exam, which was a bit stressful and made is easy to lose a few points and end up with a B, but it would be a hard class to fail if you do the work.
During the lectures the only material being taught was a cycle for stuff from the textbook with a lack of further development. The TA discussions were only real way I learned. I probably could have skipped all the lectures I went to; and still had a the same grade. The essays were light but graded a bit tough. The final exam is what really counted.
I really struggled to grasp anything Prof. Sennet was trying to convey with his lectures. I felt as though he definitely overcomplicated things which didn't help. My TA was clutch, he made the experience much more enjoyable. The class revolves around two papers and a final; the first paper is submitted twice.
This course was incredibly easy, though it's mostly taught by the TA. Sennet's lectures are pre-recorded and quite old, but clear enough. He moved his office-hours last minute almost every week, but they aren't necessary to do well in the class anyway. Easy GE with fairly interesting content.
The professor is great and accessible, but he regularly changes his office hours within an hour or two before they are scheduled. The class is easy and discussions are held by TAs. Beware of the minimal amount of assignments, try to get As on all quizzes because they are the only assignments graded other than participation (showing up).
yay!!
Hard class. Changed the syllabus like 3 times without telling students. Made an agreement that the class was graded on a final essay and midterm only, students had option to do one or both. Changed this rubric middle of class by adding a hard quiz. ??? Dont bother reading board, hand writing is ineligible.Speaks too fast. Overall nice guy but avoid
Literally the easiest class you can ever take. Take if you need that last bit of AH/DD credit.
Lectures are pre-recorded and could be access online. Participation for discussions are mandatory. My TA covers things covered in the readings, Interesting theme and content, fair quizzes and final, recommend as GE.
Really interesting GE if you want to learn about sexuality! Grade was discussion participation + quizzes + final exam. No homework besides reading the resources in preparation for the quizzes. The lectures just went over the reading. If you want to make the most out of the class, read (it's interesting!). Otherwise, lectures cover most of the quiz.
