I love Adam! :o) He's a grad student and such a good teacher! He really knows his stuff and I would definitely recommend him as a teacher! He makes class a lot of fun.
While he didn't seem to go too much indepth as I would have liked, Adam's a nice guy that tries to get the class involved during lecture. Overall laidback and easy class, if you come in and do the work.
I had Adam for 410 in the summer and it was the worst class. Yeah he is pretty laid back, but I could have easily read the book by myself at home instead of him going over it each class. The discussions were very dry, all he did was read straight from the book. He is nice to look at, but the class sucked.
i did not like much being in his class. its honest opinion
Overall, I liked the class and the teacher. His lectures were pretty clear. What I did not like is that his TA, Jen Eden, often substitutied him. Her public speaking habits were often annoying and unprofessional.
Horrible grad student with no talent. You ultimately have to teach yourself, if you have his class. I think jen's lecture is much better.
Well.A teacher is cute, but the class totally sucks.
Good teacher, mostly reads from PowerPoints but makes sure you grasp a concept before moving on. Gives study guides before tests and tests aren't too hard as long as you study. Is a tough grader but explains why he gives you a particular grade and what you can improve on (and his advice makes sense). Good class, just be prepared to work!
Doesnt post slides so theres alot of note taking required. Tough grader! Hes hot though...
BORING speaker for someone who teaches public speaking. Does not explain material well, instead reads off of his notecards & powerpoint slides. If you actually listen to him talk you realize he does not say anything significant or helpful towards teaching the material. Harsh grader, poor grading criteria for speeches & exams. STAY AWAY if you can!
Great teacher! material is pretty upfront and clear. 4 tests a 3 part research paper make up most of the available points. def would recommend!
Adam is a nice guy and very clear with what he expects. The material is somewhat challenging, but that's not his fault. I suggest reading through the book chapters before the tests. He is willing to help you if you ask, especially if you are having difficulty with the project. Not a very animated character, but he will crack a smile on occasion...
He's a tough teacher but is clear about what he's expectations are and is willing to work with you. Not to mention he's nice to look at.
Seriously boring lectures every single class. He does not want his students to do well, which every teacher should. This class has such potential and interesting topics, but he makes it so bland and does not allow any class discussion. HUGE stickler on attendance. Even medically excused proof will not meet his approval to make up simple worksheets.
He's a cool guy. Course is pretty fun. Very important to go to all lectures. Can get away with not reading the book if you go to lectures. Wouldn't mind sharing a beer with the guy.
As long as you actually follow the homework guidelines, participate, and do the readings (which are super easy), you should easily get an A or at least a B.
He's a pretty chill guy and knows his stuff. He's a tough grader so if your a com student cause it's an easy major don't take his class. But if you want to learn then he's the one to take.
Unorganized Professor who is a grad student. He closed the class right after it began and we had to start an investigation to open to course. He is very unclear about what he wants and does not grade assignments very quickly so the feedback took almost a month to receive and then I would get 2 bad grades instead of one. Avoid this professor
Nice guy and very helpful. Class is difficult and boring, but that is not his fault. Have to attend class and read the designated chapters in the textbook to do well on the tests. Definitely recommend this teacher!
Very unorganized, takes months to grade anything. I don't know what else he is doing with his time, but he cannot keep up with grading any students' work. Would NOT recommend.
Not very good at communicating. His emails, rubrics, and instructions given in class are all different. The tests are pretty easy but the study guides suck.
Adam is a really nice guy. He answers emails right away and is helpful if you have any questions. Tests are fairly easy. I suggest reading the chapters in the book prior to taking. If you do that you will easily get a B!
This teacher is not enjoyable to listen to at all. He doesn't seem like he is interested in teaching com 408 at all and doesn't explain things well he just repeats what he has already said. To anyone that doesn't like math i would not advise taking this course from Adam Smith
All the grade is at the end and it is hard tests compared to what is taught. Uses another teaches speeches but tests on what was not covered. Don't take this class with him.
Nice guy and responds to emails quickly. However, almost all responses to questions are very vague and not very helpful. He has a TA that grades assignments and they are not consistent in the way they grade. Also, grades take FOREVER to get back. Very frustrating if you’re trying to keep track of how you’re doing.
Adam seemed like a nice guy, however as a professor he needs to learn patience and understanding with his students. It bothered me how vague he was with instructions and how short he was when students would come to him with help. He's a BIG grader on attendance and the tests go over SO much more than the study guide. This is a very demanding class.
Smith is a nice guy that is very approachable, but his teaching style is less then great. The study guides are very unclear and most of the tests had questions that were not on the study guide. Also the instructions for assignments are very unclear and he doesn't explain what he is really looking for. Attendance is required.
Very compassionate about the students and their situations. Be in class on time and be respectful to teachers and they will respect you more. He will give you the answers if you ask before the test and grades very fairly. He's fun to have as a professor and is well respected by the COM department. Loves his niece and pets!
VERY unclear in what he wants. Can't be 10 seconds late. An ELECTIVE taught poorly, and graded harshly. Grades like it's an AP medical course for brain surgeons. Writing seems to be more important than the ability to SPEAK in PUBLIC SPEAKING. I am a great speaker, and I'm a straight A student. Second class in college I've gotten less than an A in.
Professor Smith is very funny. Test can be challenging, however, follow the study guides, take amazing notes and Yes, actually read and you will do fine! He will help you if you need it. Take advantage of office hours to clear things up. If you follow the rubrics for the papers you will get a good grade. Do not be late and go to class.
His grading is very subjective and he docks a LOT of points for minor mistakes in relation to overall speech point value. He does not like class to ask questions. It is public speaking, something to have fun with and learn for sure, but he takes himself and the course very seriously, and grades aggressively.
He was a horrible instructor. His exams and quizzes were hardly in the book. The course materials that he provides are not even found in his exams. Stay clear of this professor, he does not care if you fail or not.
The most difficult part of this class is teaching yourself. He does not make an effort to teach, rather her provides endless video lectures and sends a million handouts via email. Study guides are given, however the tests do not align with them. Also beware, he makes several large assignments due in the same week.
Professor Smith was really helpful in a lot of ways, he always emailed me back within a fairly reasonable time frame and always answered my questions; but he seems a little "work as usual" sometimes, and simply won't go into more detail than the answer he has already given. Don't expect above and beyond with him, but expect a very solid foundation.
Really enjoyed this class, great structure and assignments. Generally two quizzes a week, a discussion post, midterm, final and an easy final project. As long as you stay up to date on your readings the class is easy and straight forward.
His classes are tough. I worked very hard for a C and I get A's, regularly. I honestly don't know what I could have done more of to raise my grade. Read the text and re-read, if you want to even think about passing the tests.
This class was super hard. Tests are awful and don't follow study guides. Some questions on tests were not in either the lectures or book. Exams are proctored. Professor is helpful, the but class is poorly laid out. He is very vague when you ask questions. Lots of big assignments due in 1 week. Grading is consistent, but he is picky with details.
Tests are very difficult. Papers require a lot of work and attention to detail but if you do everything in the grading rubric you can get a good grade. If you email him a question you will most likely get an answer that does not help at all. TA grades papers and lecture videos are a different teacher soo "what do you do here?" comes to mind.
He is a decent professor but is not good at clarifying anything. This is my second class with him and both times I've emailed him questions and he doesn't help settle the confusion. The final project also states there is a lot of flexibility, but when it was graded that was not the case. I wouldn't take a class from this professor again.
This is the only class I had with Adam. Honestly he's not the worst professor Ive had. The class had a decent amount of homework in it but if you did a little each day during the week, you'll end up with an A or B (I ended up getting an 87%). He's not that bad for this class. It was a requirement for me so my choices were limited. Not a bad guy
I would recommend trying to avoid this guy if you can. This is because he makes what should be an easy subject about as hard as it possibly could be. Test are often centered around choose the most correct answer logic as apposed to it is either right or its wrong. Communication should be an easy class because we do it everyday. Howver, not here lol
I went into this class-super stressed and thought I was going to fail after reading all the comments on here. Well, i read the book, studied, worked hard on the paper, went through the lectures, made great cheat sheets for exams and turned my assignments in on time and I got an A. So just put in the work and you can pass.
Only two tests. Easy going. Encouraging. It is a com class so you will need to present in front of the class. The book was not needed. Review his slides on canvas before midterm and final. Clear grading! The professor is always dressed well. Easy straightforward class.
There are very few things to say about Adam because he has no presence in the class. When he does respond, it is very vague and has NO clear answer/solution. He doesn't even use his own lectures! He uses other teacher's lectures and then molds his class around them! All graded work is very harsh (which he never does, its always a TA). AVOID HIM.
Very particular with grading. Not an overabundance of homework or discussions, but make sure you know the material for the homework. The final project was a disaster- He never explained how to know what variables to choose outside of the one example from the homework problems. Was prompt to answer questions via email though.
Easy class. Simple, short weekly discussion board writing assignments followed by 2 quizzes. I didn't read any of the textbook chapters only used it to assist me on assignments that required using materials inside of it when he says to go on page (#). Didn't study for any of the quizzes because well you don't have to if you know what I mean (:
COM408 is a difficult class, its a statistics math class. Make sure to read, take notes, watch lectures & pay attn. to deadlines. & Dont wait till the last minute to do the final project; its very hard. He did a good job responding to emails & student inquiries and providing feedback. Only complaint: Slow grader for a short online class.
Took him for COM259. Meh. Has many video discussion posts which were my least favorite part about the course. The quizzes were kinda hard even if you used the book. Some assignments lack clarity. Could be better, could be worse.
Definitely the hardest class I've taken in undergrad. Pay attention during lectures and take notes. Not much book use. Class requires A LOT of effort. The final is a cumulative file done in SPSS (stats program) that encompasses almost all formulas from the class. Its focus is synthesis of data from samples and interpretation of data. yeah,... fun
This class is offered by several other professors, I would recommend taking it from one of them. Smith's assignments are decent but the quizzes and tests have very little to do with the readings or lectures. This class was harder than it should be, you can pass with a B but the exams will kill you.
His tests had nothing to do with the course material, lots of trick questions. He is VERY strict and has everything very detailed on his syllabus, which he is quick to snap about if you didn't memorize all of it. Honestly a rude professor, lets his ta's do everything and uses other professor's lectures. Not even sure what he does.
Read the reviews. I so wish I had before taking his class. Slow grader, very tough on how he grades the papers, and the tests are rough. Over 1/3 of the final is the stats but only 1 weeks lectures cover this material. Modules only open up one at a time so your pace is restricted and you will have NO flexibility and he packs certain weeks. AVOID!!
Great course and professor. Dont listen to other reviews on here, if you put in the effort you will do fine. As long as you watch the lectures, and read the text book, everything will make sense! The course sets you up perfectly to succeed on the final project, and exams.
His exams are VERY hard and they count towards almost half your grade. If you fail an exam expect to fail the course. Grades papers harder than any other professor I've ever had. Not worth the money or student loans to take this guy. AVOID IF YOU CAN!!!! Caused more anxiety than actual learning.
very meticulous. will dock points on assignments for no reason just so you do not get an A. I am a straight-A student and I got a B in this class. very very very strict on APA citations, in-text citing, APA formatting for papers. do not recommend this teacher. he even wrote in the syllabus "I do not give out A's, if you do what is expected C wk"
I will say it is by far the most writing intensive class I have ever taken. There are a total of 4 papers due, 2 of them being worth a massive amount of points (over 100 points each). There were 2 major exams. If you don't read the ENTIRE textbook and take notes on ALL of the lectures, you will fail the tests. If you put in the work, you will pass.
Did not honor his own syllabus, which stated points possible were 500, on final day of class and after surveys were turned in, he notified us that points possible was actually 515.? who does that? That's 15 additional points we didn't know we had to work for! if I had known, I would have done the extra credit of 5 pts for a paper offered.
Prof Smith responds quickly to questions but he can sometimes be very vague with answers, which isnt always helpful. There is a lot of reading and there are only larger assignments due spread out through the course. His TA was very discouraging and somewhat rude when providing feedback. I have to retake and will avoid his class.
I was super worried and beyond stressed about this class Im terrible at math and the reviews scared the ish out of me. I figured there was no way I could pass. I thought the material was difficult but I watched the videos over and over to understand. If you pay attention all semester, you will do fine on the project. Allows a cheatsheat for test
I took this class for my major. This was my last class for my major and I failed the class. I went into the final with 86% and my final grade was 66%. He is a tough grader and isn't fair at all. Even if you do half the work he will give you zero credit. I. The final paper is worth half your grade. I will be retaking the class with someone else.
I had Prof Smith for Com 308 & 408. I was terrified after reading all the reviews and thought there was no way Id pass. I would say both are difficult but 308 more so. I studied my butt off in 408 and even got a tutor. Tests are difficult but offers EC if the class does the eval. Also allows a cheat sheet. Just study, study, study and study more
Teaches tough love. Has very few assignments that are worth many points. Read and watch and take notes on everything!!! He offered his help for clarification for each assignment, and had full conversations via email to help me work through a tough paper in 308. I made an error on due dates and P Smith allowed me to submit late for 10 pt penalty.
Trying to use RPNOW to take tests is a NIGHTMARE! I couldnt get the browser to work, and when I asked Prof. Smith for help, his solution was to upgrade your internet because its slow or borrow someones computer. He doesnt even use his own lectures, everything is graded by a TA. Just avoid at all costs.
Incredibly difficult with no help from the instructor himself. Grades down on the smallest things like a coma, or subjective opinions. I am genuinely trying to hold back my anger. I have never been in a class so difficult with absolutely no support from the instructor.
Prior to taking this class Ive read reviews of students in the past who have taken his class and either had to retake it or had negative things to say. The professor has changed a lot to his course so the class as of now is not too difficult, the grading is normal and the expectations are not terrible. My downside to this class was the exams.
His 408 course was quite simple, he doesn't have high expectations. SPSS lab, hw assignment, and discussion each week but they're not too difficult. 2 exams and you get a cheat sheet and one final project that goes over everything you learned in the labs. Amazing lecture vids that are helpful and explain what you need to do step by step.
By far the worst class and worst professor I have ever interacted with. He actually told me to seek out the disability office for accommodations when I asked for help since I was struggling with the class. I have never struggled with a class as much as this one. I passed it with a 70% by the grace of god himself. AVOID AT ALL COST.
Grades over most meticulous things. Uses another professor's lectures for the course who is upbeat/motivating, but I felt discouraged after completing every assignment. 2nd time I have taken him and relieved I never have to again. I was 2 points away from an A in the class. 4 pts off my final for being too long. Was having health issues all summer.
After reading prior reviews I was anxious to take COM408 with Adam, however, it was a very pleasant experience. I needed this class to graduate and did take it alone which I would recommend/ taking it with a few easy classes. 2 tests, 4 homeworks, 4 labs, 1 final paper. DO NOT let peoples bad reviews throw you off, it was very manageable!
This is my 2nd time taking the class. The 1st time I failed by 1%. He couldn't even give me the 1% to pass. The 2nd time I took this class I passed with a B. He SUCKS at feedback!!! There are NOOO exams/quizzes for this classes anymore. Fall 2021 was the last semester to have exams/quizzes. Make sure to do your papers well and you should pass!!
Professor Smith was actually a pretty good professor. Anytime I emailed him he got back to me super quick and always gave great feedback. Only complaint would be that he only grades 7 assignments all semester so if you do bad on one, it is really hard to get your grade back up. I would take him again though.
I am on my final semester and will probably be dropping out due to this class. I took this class online and had so much trouble reading and listening to this information. I messaged this professor once for help and he responded very late and was very unhelpful. He makes it clear that there are no second chances in this class. If you mess up drop it
Tbh, Adam is the worst professor I have EVER had and this is my 3rd time taking him but I hate him. He failed me by 1% for COM 308 and I had to retake it and now this class with him, it sucks. He sucks at compromise or working with you and is pretty rude. He almost makes me want to quit college and this is my last semester! DON'T TAKE HIS CLASSES!!
Tbh, Adam is the worst professor I have EVER had and this is my 3rd time taking him but I hate him. He failed me by 1% and I had to retake it. He grades unfairly and is rude and not helpful. He sucks at compromise or working with you and is pretty rude. He almost makes me want to quit college and this is my last semester! DON'T TAKE HIS CLASSES!
Professor Smith showed very little interest in teaching this class. The lectures are copied from another professor. His prompts are extremely vague and his grading is needlessly strtict (and takes (1-2 weeks to grade any assignment). He threatened to fail any student who helped another student with an assignment or anyone who used a tutor for help.
Professor smith is overly aggressive and rude to students for no reason. He enjoys threatening to fail students at every opportunity. He discourages teamwork and explains that helping other students is cheating. He rarely responds to questions directed at him and takes weeks before grading anything. Do not take this professor if you can avoid it.
Grab a bottle of something before reading the syllabus, because you will need it. No outside videos, absolutely no help beyond himself is allowed. Some students created an emotional support group where we compared grades, kept track of due dates and asked questions. We were all in trouble and reminded that we are not allowed to collaborate at all.
The course itself is quite easy to learn if you put in the effort, but the prof makes it 100 times worse. Not only is he unclear in terms of grading but giving feedback, he is also unnecessarily rude and unhelpful. I've never seen a prof that really enjoys threatening and terrorizing his students so much. It seems like he just wants you to fail.
If you have the chance to take Com308 with anyone else, do yourself a favor. It is disappointing that money was spent to take a class facilitated by a professor like him. Be prepared to teach yourself. He does the bare minimum, is not clear on what hes looking for, and could care less about his students success. Not a good experience.
Adam Smith was excellent. I was nervous about this class w/the limited # of assignments & the course itself. It is easy to navigate, no extra work just because. It is straightforward w/ great explanations & examples. If you have a question all you have to do is reach out to him & not only is he helpful but quick to respond. Would take him again!
This professor does not care about his students. I can say that because a class should be taught to teach your students not punish them for ridiculous details. Your students are already having so many other workloads and life and work, etc. As a "professor", your job should be to teach not power trip. Go do sales or something.
This class has little to no 'COMM' application outside of the rare article analysis boards. Very bad with feedback, just leaves comments such as 'good job' and you'll never get a 10/10 or a 30/30. Exams have the most out of left field questions. Final project's prompt is impossible to understand with confidence. Take any other upper division class.
Professor Smith was awesome! Not sure what all the negative reviews are? Only reason I got a C+ was because I was stretched too thin. Got Covid during the end of the semester, started a new job and took another heavy upper-level class simultaneously. If I could have taken this class by itself I'm sure I could have gotten an A. Plan accordingly!
I was extremely worried going into this class because of the bad reviews....but it was really not bad at all. There are weekly discussions (easy points), weekly homework (also fairly simple - all answers are in the lectures), 4 SPSS labs (fairly simple) and 2 exams (allows 1 sheet of notes). I'm not strong in math but I landed a B. Relax everyone!!
Professor Smith is willing to help you in anyway he can you have any questions you will typically get a response back from him in less than 24 hours. The course itself is challenging you will have to put the work in. Be prepared not to get a 100% on anything he will not give that out and will find something so small to take at minimum 1 point off.
0/10 absolutely do not recommend! This professor was so unapproachable, so specific and just downright nasty! He even tried to penalize the class for studying with each other which is absurd! No one in the entire class passed with more than a 76% and he sent us a degrading email like we were children. Take at your own risk, you have been warned.
This is my third time with this instructor. He can be picky but in general he is upfront about it in the syllabus. My tip, do every assignment the best you can. He grades the hardest on final assignments and they are weighted heavy so don't chance missed points anywhere and you'll be ok.
This professor will ask you to do work he never taught. I found myself looking to Google a lot and teaching myself to be able to complete my assignments. He does not reply to emails, and the work is unclear since the instructions for assignments contradict the rubric.
Adam was the instructor for several of my classes I've had a decent experience in all of them. Read the syllabus, follow instructions, compare your submission to the rubric, prepare for the tests and complete every assignment and you will do fine. I learned a lot in this class about research, reporting findings and evaluating sources.
Genuinely the worst professor I have ever had. Took away credit from small assignments without reason. Expect to get 90% at most on small assignments like discussion boards without getting any justification. I am typically an A student with a couple Bs on my transcript. He took away credit several times without a
Feedback is awful. Most feedback is from the TA. The test questions are impossible to follow unless you know each topic, vocab word, theory etc... inside and out. All tests are timed 37 min. for 25 questions. So if you have to try to look at your notes be ready to not have enough time to finish the test. You also have to use lockdown browser.
Professor Smith has a specific teaching style, but engaging with it can pay off. Stay focused, complete assignments, and use resources like the textbook and unstuckstudy for study prep. The class has its challenges, but with effort, you can do well.
STAY AWAY! The instructions for his classes are the worst. His feedback is awful, and since you can not understand a single thing he is saying in his videos (because he mumbles and can not speak clearly) this class is extra difficult. I wish ASU would stop using this professor.
