he is very straight forward in explaining things. very clear!
Pretty good at bringing the material across, unfortunately he is about as left-wing as they come. Which, as an econ professor, is a detriment to taking him and especially his "custom lectures" seriously.
Really enthusiastic and clearly cares about the subject. He makes the material easy to understand. If you have a basic understanding of economic principles the course shouldnt be too difficult. He really does his best to make sure everyone understands. His lecture notes are very thorough and clear. One of the best econ profs ive had in my 4 years!
Full blown socialist, when he isn't espousing his far-left ideology he actually does a decent job at teaching to the textbook. His "custom" lectures should be avoided at all costs unless you enjoyed The Communist Manifesto.
Yes, he's quite a socialist but versus other econ professors in the dptment I will gladly take him because you don't even need to read the book if you get his slides. At times he goes retardedly slow and I think he forgets he's teaching at michigan rather than OSU. Just LABEL your graphs on tests and ur straight for an A
He is a chill professor. He makes random cheesy chokes, kinda funny.
If you can get past his left-winged garbage he is a great professor. His lectures are clear and his tests are pretty fair and follow his lectures pretty closely. Reading the book isn't very helpful, except if you are really struggling to grasp some of the concepts in class. The biggest downside about the class is there is no curve so be aware
He is extremely arrogant and doesn't really take the students concerns into account for grades. If you get a good gsi you should be fine, but if you don't your screwed. Also short response on test are graded very strictly and you will get random points off even if you answered it right, but just not their way with their terminology
He doesn't curve, so if you aren't good at taking exams, or don't understand the material 100%, you're screwed. They grade the short answers really harshly as well. Lectures weren't boring though.
I had him in fall '09, which was his first semester teaching this class. So he lacked some experience with grading, and exam policies. But i found him to be very pleasent during lecture and I did not mind going. Presented material clearly---Id say a good man to learn economics from! very enthusiastic
Extremely helpful during office hours. Interesting and very clear lectures. He repeats important points a lot so that students can understand better. Plus, I could see he was doing his best to make sure students can really learn something out of his lecture. Pay attention to lectures than textbook. Exams are not hard if you studied (except finals)
I like him. He is enthusiastic and his lectures are rarely boring. The midterms were a breeze.
Great Lecturer, thoughtful, friendly. I looked forward to class!
New professor that keeps things interesting. From what I've heard from everyone, Miles Kimball is horrible -- don't take your chances with him. If you do all the HW you get an automatic grade bump at the end of the semester (A- to A, etc.). The course is curved at the end to meet the Economics department criteria.

i honestly liked him all the way until the 2nd midterm- at which point he gave us an exam that was so irrelevant and confusing that 10% of the class dropped immediately afterward (and got w's on their transcripts)
This man explains economics with impeccable clarity. Exams are reasonable and if you do the homework your grade gets bumped up a level higher. His slides are very helpful as well and he is good about keeping the Ctools page updated. Doesn't require attendance to lecture or section, which is nice.
This was his second semester teaching this class. The practice tests from last semester were extremely easy compared to the tests from this semester. The class average ended up being a 70 which was curved to around a B-. Two tests and one cumulative final. Make sure you understand the material very well. Make sure to do the HW for a grade bump.
This class turned out to be a complete fluke. It appeared that Dr. Stevenson was attempting to make up for all of the good grades that he gave in his first semester class and make the exams too difficult. It was not a good experience at all.
Good teacher and interesting lecturer. But, he doesn't understand how to write a test. His tests from first semester were very easy. He made our tests really hard. He needs to figure out how to write an appropriate test for the material taught. He doesnt curve tests but curves overall grades, and if you do the all the hw you will get a grade bump
Great lecturer and his slides are incredibly neat and informative. However, the tests were apparently too easy first semester so he made them fairly difficult this time. I felt like he was asking us to draw inferences in the short answer instead of actually teaching it in class. Grades are curved in the end though, so you'll be fine.
Lectures in a clear but interesting manner - hand motions make him look like a dictator at times. Slides have what you need to know. Tests are hard and stresses math (bring a calculator!), but the curve is generous esp. with the homework bump (1/2 a letter grade!). Would recommend anyone strong in math to take it. Remember: practice and SLEEP WELL!
If you are okay with basic algebra, you would have no trouble whatsoever.
Adam was really enthusiastic. His tests were too hard, but he curved the grades at the end, so it turned out okay. He also screamed the whole time and could use a lesson in speaking with a microphone, but overally it was a good experience. My GSI (Noah) was AWFUL and Adam was happy to help me instead.
hi professor stevenson!
Best 102 professor. Fun teaching style, interesting lectures. Exams are pretty hard, but your grade is relevant to the class average so it doesn't matter. Highly recommended!
stevenson is an interesting guy, but just sometimes hard to take seriously. his lectures aren't that important, the GSIs are more so what matters. the exams are tough, even with the curve, many people still do horrible. only take this class if you seriously have to!!!
He's a good professor: goes at the right speed, lectures are clear and easy to understand. But agreed, DON'T take this class for fun. It will kill you, esp. if you're not a "math-science-know how to apply stuff to problems" person. If you're like me who learns by memorizing things , don't take this class. It will destroy you.
if you took econ 101, this class is not a shocker in difficulty. Not a walk in the park, but definitely not impossible either. It takes work, but if you got a B or better in econ 101, you should be able to do the same in this class with less effort. Overall, Great Guy and Great Class
He uses lots of lecture slides, posts them online, with notes, along with podcasts of the lectures - all very useful for studying. Lectures are interesting because he applies the basic 102 models to complex economic issues. A lot of professors won't bother with that.
If you don't need to take this class dont. 101 was much easier and this just flat out sucked. Ive never studied so hard and done so bad. Final was horrible and cumulative. Take it if you need to otherwise avoid.
Stevenson's an awesome prof! Take Economics of Education, Trust me, its so enlightening about the education system, its kinda easy, kinda hard. Its a fun 300 level Econ class.
Stevenson is great. He videotapes his lectures so you can go back and watch themas he draws the graphs, which are GREAT review for the exams. Overall, it's a fairly graded class and I thought it was more straightforward than 101. Pretty much if you do the articles and HW, you'll get a 3rd of a letter grade bump. Two midterms and a difficult final
Good professor/lecturer, very clear, even makes points several times over for you to understand. Exams are fair, helps if you understand the material rather than just memorizing it
I really liked Stevenson. The material is interesting to me, and he is engaging. His voice is not boring, he is animated, and his mannerisms make me laugh. I thought grades and exams were completely reasonable. I'm taking another class he is teaching next semester because I like him a lot.
Overall Stevenson was a pretty decent lecturer. The work isn't easy but it definitely is doable. Its way easier than 101 but the only hard part about it that the curve sucks. There is only like a 5% curve. My only suggestions is go to office hours if you have any questions because most of the GSI's suck.
GREAT professor! After this class, I was more interested in Econ. He is an engaging lecturer and explains his material well with clarity. It is nice to have a professor with much passion. Econ 102 has been my favorite class so far! Even though it was a challenging class, it was ultimately very worthwhile and I learned a lot.
He is a very good lecturer, crystal clear, good examples, engaging. Found the subject matter somewhat dull (liked 101 better).
He is a clear lecturer and is very good at explaining hard to grasp concepts. I would suggest going to lecture in order to do better on exams. The second midterm and final are hard, but study hard and you should be fine. I love econ now.
very clear and interesting professor. He likes to connect real life scenarios to the class discussion. The first two midterms are ok, but the final is very hard. The class ends up being approximately curved down 10% (total points) (80% A-, 70 B- etc...). Overall, you will probably get similar grade to 101, and the tests are more straight forward.
no comment
The class starts out fairly easy. The first exam is basically all 101 review. The second exam is pretty easy too. It gets much harder for the final so don't slack off towards the end of class. Doing the practice exams are the most helpful ways to study, so make sure you understand all of the questions on them.
Nice guy. Hard class. Really energetic guy. Funny if you get a chance to talk to him in person.
The concepts are simple but he glosses over the important stuff and rambles on about many things that are irrelevant. he goes too quickly through the lecture slides and his exams are nothing like any of the practice exams. Not the best econ teacher I have had here at Michigan.
AMAZING lecturer, his slides are a great resource for studying, HWs always have a "real-world" application/meaning behind them. He makes sure you learn a LOT of applicable material in this course. One of the best professors I've had at Michigan!
Goes WAY too fast through the lecture slides. I don't feel that the material is that difficult, but still struggled with it because he fails to explain the intuition behind the important concepts.
I'm an ECON major who got a B in 101. His lectures are quite possible the most boring things I have ever attended, but if you can pay attention then you should do fine. Decent lecturer, great slideshows, I have taught myself the entire class.
Class can get a little dull at times, but otherwise it's not too terrible. Posts all his lectures online so you don't really ever have to go. There is iClicker attendance though.
Same difficulty level as 101, MUST study AND do homework. First exam is more review, second and final are difficult. Dry lecturer and make sure you get a good GSI
HARDer than econ 101! He goes pretty fast in lecture though he posts the lectures in ctools. Exams get progressively harder. BUT he is a really nice guy
Decent professor, but the class is hard. Don't take if you haven't taken 101 (he says 101 is not required, just recommended - it should be required). Best way to study is to look at homework questions/answers, even unassigned problems. Prof seems a bit bitter about not being tenure-track, though.
Stevenson is really goofy. Homework is not very clear, especially the problems he writes. Kind of has a standoffish attitude when dealt with in office hours. Tests have questions on them that come totally out of left field. They are also way too long, you can know the material and still do poorly due to a lack of time. Take at your own risk.
Pretty bad. Super fast and very unclear.
Loved this class with him!! I took it over the summer, loved how much I learned about education. Class isn't too math-based (I'm not good at math so I'd know), there's also a good deal of remembering educational trends and theories. I love his passion about the subject.
Good professor. Teaches well. Exams are hard though.
Great professor. Hard exams. But if you study enough you'll do well. His lectures do enough; you don't even need to read the textbook (although I'm sure it's more helpful)
Professor Stevenson is definitely a great teacher, but the exams are quite difficult. He offers the basic concepts of new material in lectures, but the homework and exams take it to another level. If you're up for the challenge, I would recommend him.
Adam is a really nice guy and a really good lecturer, but the class is hard. It's not too difficult to get a good grade, but it is a ton of work. Make sure you read the book. And count the number of times Adam says "Fine!" during lecture. Also, he's NOT Canadian, regardless of what anyone says.
Hardest class i've ever taken. Professor Stevenson is a nice guy but and a good professor, but goes so fast sometimes. The work load is extremely heavy and at a certain point the tests are so hard that they're just cruel.
Stevenson is a good professor. Class was very interesting. "Required" readings are easy to ignore. 6 homework sets through the semester, but they tend to be lengthy. Exams are multiple choice and short answer and were more difficult than I expected.
Stevenson is very organized and clearly knows what he is talking about. However, the homework and exams are very difficult. Much studying and frequent office hours visits are required to receive a good grade in his class.
I was in his Economics of Education class, and he is definitely one of the most organized and clear teachers I have ever had. Everything is on Ctools, including recorded lectures and tons of past papers! Doing the readings isn't really necessary. If you do the past papers and go through lecture slides thoroughly and you'll do well.
Stevenson is a nice-guy professor who is more than willing to help students who try. His tests and homework are challenging, but he doesn't try to make kids fail or test on things he doesn't teach. Even in large lectures, he does a decent job remembering people if they come to office hours.
The lectures are interesting, the exams are tough but fair, but the homework assignments are difficult and way too long.
Stevenson really knows his stuff. He posts recordings of all of his lectures online, which is extremely helpful considering the difficulty of the material. It's not an easy A, but the GSI's were really great across the board. If you put the work in you should be fine
His lecture slides are boring and hard to follow which makes lectures painful to sit through. had to teach most of the material to myself
Makes the class unnecessarily complicated. You will learn one formula the entire year and then on the exam he gives you a total different formula. Take pass/fail if you can.
He definitely makes the class WAY harder than it is. I didn't actually hate it and did well but for some people, this class can be hard. I used Study Edge to review and prepare for the exams. They have chapter reviews and concept videos that helped me get the hang of things way faster. I did their practice problems and those were EXTREMELY helpful!
A very charming but not really good professor. He sounds very legit in lectures, but you'll never understand the stuff when you start studying. Very heavy workload, ridiculously fast pace, unclear. Killer combination with engineering classes.
Probably the most boring lecture i've had at U of M. It doesn't even matter though as the exams will be completely new things. Some GSI's are good, but mine was terrible and did not care about the students who did not grasp the topics.
I thought that this was a great class. Professor Stevenson does an excellent job at presenting the material and I found lectures to be very interesting, though exams were kind of tough.
Stevenson is really solid. He knows and explains the material well - it is NOT an easy A, however. You have to study a lot to do well on the finals- always go to review sessions.
Stevenson speaks fast and can be dull at times, but if you can manage to focus, he is a great lecturer, very clear, and passionate about economics. Use your GSIs, they're generally pretty good if they speak english.
Adam is a good guy who knows a lot about the topic. He loves to talk forever though, and the amount he tries to plow through in the last five minutes of class is a little much. Also, the second exam was the hardest thing I've ever taken. Average was a 32/60 or something like that.
Very knowledgeable and clear lecturer. He's my only professor who posts the lectures online (the entire lecture..video plus sound..) which is incredibly helpful. He also seems to be genuinely passionate about teaching, which is unfortunately a rarity at the college level.
He posts lecture slides AND audio online which is huge. He does everything he can for his students to succeed. That being said, the exams for this class fluctuate between fair and downright heinous; very hit or miss.
Stevenson definitely knows material in and out, but his lectures are at times very dull. He does upload the post-lecture slides and the lecture recordings online, and I rewatched parts of those for the exams. The exams can be either okay or impossible. The second exam was the most difficult exam I have ever taken.
Stevenson knows what he is talking about but he is sometimes very boring and loses you in the lecture. His slides are pretty useless although the graphs are good. His tests are extremely difficult and it makes his class very frustrating.
Stevenson's a very organized professor and he tries to keep his lectures interesting. Regarding exams, I thought the second one was okay, but the third was hard. It's probably because I liked the material for the second portion more than third. But either way, you do need to put in time for this class. Also, the textbook really isn't necessary.
Great Professor and i'm saying this as a student who got a C in his class. His class is hard, exams are even more challenging but I learned a ton and as long as you don't take many other classes with it, you'll have plenty of time to study the heap of material he throws at you.
I was really happy with Stevenson as a professor. The class was hard, but it's going to be hard no matter what. He was a really clear lecturer but he speaks really fast and I didn't have time to hand write everything I wanted to. He puts ppts online with his notes so that's really helpful. Overall I liked him as a professor and would recommend him.
The new homework required and written parts to exams can catch students buy surprise at certain points. But in reality it's the same difficulty as 101. His test will make sure you know he material. Show up. Pay attention. Ace the homework. Use it all as study guide and ace the class. Remember lecture tools is your friend.
Definitely knows his stuff, but makes his exams mostly math based and gives zero explanation to the math, while spending the entire lecture time focusing on things that are made pretty clear by the textbook. Would not recommend, there are easier Econ 102 professors here.
Extremely into himself. There are math questions on the exams that are not covered whatsoever in lecture.
Adam enjoys overly complicating things. The tests are very difficult, probably more so than they should be, although not entirely unfair; if you really study hard you will be okay. He is blatantly conservative, condescending, and super egotistical. Unhelpful in office hours. There isn't that much homework, but it's very tedious and takes time.
Adam is a bright guy. He knows the material and is clear in delivery, but he makes things extremely complicated. As others have said, he's blatantly conservative, and lets his opinions be known. The exams are extremely difficult, but if you put a lot of time into it you can escape with a B+/A-
He is a very passionate and smart lecturer. There's hw problems every week, which can take a while but are not terrible. The 3 exams are pretty difficult, but if you pay attention in class and study, you will do fine. Contrary to the other comments, he actually said in class that he is Keynesian, and thus, liberal. But he tries to remain neutral.
Adam is passionate and knowledgeable about the subject but he overly complicates things and the class is ridiculously hard. His grading system makes it hard as he returns the 2nd exam grades after the drop/add deadline.
I've heard a lot of bad things about him and understand none of them. He's one of the most straightforward professors at this university and I think he's very entertaining in class.
Adam is a great professor. His tests are hard, but they are fair and he earns the right to be tough because he explains the material so well. He covers the readings quite thoroughly in lecture so you often don't need to open the book. Favorite prof in the econ department!
He is not a nice guy. He purposely makes his exams way harder than necessary and he is not helpful at all. I worked my butt off and ended up with a B+, which was my worst grade at UMich thus far.
You have to do a lot of work if you want to do well on the exams which are hard. His lectures can be hard to follow because he moves SO fast.
He moves very fast and covers a lot of material each class. Exams are very tough, the curve is small. He is knowledgable about the subject but often overcomplicates things. It is a hard class, but manageable if you are willing to put a LOT of work into it.
Tests are tough but he is an incredible professor, who prepares you for the exam. If you want to take econ 402 ever, take 102 with stevenson
true sharks should be able to get an A in this class.... not hard at all. I didn't go to a single lecture and got an A in the classs... prob could have gotten an A+ but I had other stuff to worry about. he also curves unlike dudley- so take stevenson for sure.
The class is basically mandatory, but Adam's exams are tough. It is graded on a scale though.
Econ 102 is definitely a hard class and Stevenson's exams make you work for your grade. His exams are curved but they are not easy, especially the short answer portions. He also covers material very quickly, but he does but the lectures on Blue Review. He really has a passion for teaching, and it makes the class much better than expected.
The lectures were very boring, but he made the material easy to understand. The tests were relatively hard, but that is pretty common for an econ 102 class.
Stevenson is one of the best teachers I've had so far and really knew what he was talking about. He gives clear, in depth lectures and lays out what is expected on the test. He is a nice guy and even though the class is somewhat difficult, it isn't hard to get a good grade if you put in a little effort
Stevenson is passionate about economics. You can tell that he is smart and knowledgable about the topics. His course is not necessarily fast-paced, but it is difficult. The exams have multiple choice answers that take thought to process each possible answer. The exams also have free response that can leave you clueless how to answer a problem.
Stevenson is very energetic and you get the sense that he cares about what he does. I've recommended him to a couple of friends. However this class is graded on the Econ curve which ensures that at least 40% of the class will get a C or below. Be wary of that stat, I killed Econ 101 and barely pulled out an A- in this class.
This class is tough. You'll have to study, but the curve is generous. The more you study, the better you'll do (this is true for most classes). I never read the book (I only used it for homework). I ended up with an A+
Worst Prof ever, textbook sucked not helpful at all
I took ECON 102 approximately 3 years ago with Stevenson. I would describe the material and structure of his 102 class to be extremely well crafted. He is a really passionate lecturer. I majored in Economics because of him and how well he introduced some of the major Macro topics.
Pretty average all around. He's definitely excited about Econ but sometimes his explanations just ramble on. The tests are not as bad as people say, they're very similar to the old exams online and grades are curved generously.
Stevenson is kind of eccentric but he explains all of the topics well. The exams are very fair and It's pretty easy to do well as long as you review the lectures and study old exams.
He explains his topics well. Textbook didn't help as most of his content isn't even in there. If you study well enough you'll do okay. Old exams are very helpful.
Adam Stevenson was the best professor I've had at UofM up to this point. He is very knowledgeable on Macroeconomics and covers huges amounts of material in lecture. Study hard for the exams because they are difficult and will test your knowledge of everything you learn. Tough class but if you put enough work in, it is manageable to do decent.
Stevenson is one of the better professors I've had in the Economics department. I was hesitant to take 102 because I found 101 difficult. However, it is not super difficult to do well in 102 if you put the work in. Stevenson may ramble on a little bit but I'd rather have a professor who over explained something rather than under explained.
The class covers a lot of valuable information. It's good to have a basic understanding of the economy regardless of your major. Prof Stevenson's exam and hw questions would irritate me a lot, but he is passionate about what he teaches.
Stevenson is very knowledgable but he often rambles on and his powerpoints have 30+ slides each with 2 or 3 paragraphs of information on them. This is a very hard class and requires a lot of work, Cho is much better
ECON 102 with Stevenson is very MATHEMATICAL BASED. I highly recommend you to take this with him if applied algebra is your strong suit. Be prepared for annoying weekly homework that can take 2.5 hours to figure out. Lectures can be long and is based on graded iClicker points. I only used the textbook to do homework. All in all, it was a good class
Stevenson is very knowledgeable and excited about microecon. The class can be challenging, which is good preparation for Econ 401. It is very important to stay on top of the content and readings of the class. Make sure you give yourself a few hours each week to do the homework well. There's a lot of math, but it's not too bad if you pace yourself.
He is very smart. He keeps track of attendance. His lectures are recorded so i rewatched them. He rushes through the material very fast. You have to put in work. The homework is somewhat helpful, although it doesnt connect to tests. Tests are very hard especially in the limited time. Work everyday if you want to do well. Stevenson makes it hard.
Stevenson is a very eccentric guy. On stage he talks fast and hard, but the over-the-top behavior can make class more engrossing. During lecture it can be hard to keep up, and the content is rather thick. Class required memorization of equations and deep understanding of the topics to do well. Certainly harder than other profs, but worth it.
I love Adam! He is a very passionate lecturer and keeps you engaged. He lectures incredibly fast, so it's hard to keep up with him. If you put in the work though, you'll do fine. He records his lectures and is great at posting slides before class. He is very knowledgable and uses a lot of real life examples to explain the content.
Decent at presenting. Attendance is scored by iclicker questions and he gives you five days to skip.
Material is very interesting but he covers a lot in each slide during lecture so be sure to go. Also be sure to read the book because my grade on each exam was correlated to how much I read the book. Exams are tough so be sure to put in the time for them.
He talks fast, but Adam's incredibly passionate about economics and honestly entertaining to listen to. Go to class and discussion. Do the homework every week and do the practice exams. You should get an B+/A- if you just do what's expected.
Talks way too fast in lectures but records. iClicker, but lowest five removed. Unnecessarily hard homework, a friend said office hours were helpful/he always finished his hw in OH. Study a lot for the exams - not cumulative, but tricky wording (MC+short answer). Can buy old textbook edition, textbook only needed for homework (read only 1 chapter)
Although he is hard and is very math intensive, if you go to class and work through and review hw problems and GSI section questions you will be fine on exams. He is enthusiastic about the material and you can tell he really does care about the topic.
class is unnecessarily hard. workload is ridiculous for a 3 credit class. definitely don't take it
Disliked Professor Stevenson. He is definitely passionate, however he talks incredibly fast and jumps all over the place. As somebody who did very well in macroeconomics, I felt this was an entirely different beast. If taking 102 at Umich, I suggest taking Cho.
Stevenson is a tough grader but the class is super interesting and he is extremely passionate about what he teaches. The exams are tough and I'd recommend going to discussion sections because the practice problems help. There are weekly homeworks due and occasionally article responses (3 times for the semester). Tough class but great professor.
Lectures are super fast paced and the class is very math heavy. Definitly need to put in work to do well.
Good professor. He is really passionate about Econ and it definitely shows during lectures. Post lectures online but you'll have to go for points. Just rewatch his lectures, do the homework and GSI section problems, go to review sessions, and look over the old exams and you'll do fine on tests. HW is a bit tricky so start on it early.
Take Cho. Stevenson's course is significantly harder. He talks insanely fast and rambles in his lectures, is barely accessible outside of class, and his exams are very difficult
Very knowledgable, prepared, and clear professor. Lectures are engaging. Iclicker points are annoying but helpful. Tests were harder than expected and practice exams come in handy. Some questions were poorly written. Other than that, great proff.
Stevenson cares about the class and is super passionate, but he doesn't seem too adapt at teaching an intro level course. This was super math heavy for an intro econ course and he explains things very quickly. You can tell it makes sense to him, but it won't always be clear to you. The homework is hard and will take some time.
I hadn't taken any high school economics or Econ 101 before this class, but with a little bit of studying and with the really informative lectures, I was able to understand the content really well. Stevenson talks really fast, but he makes a lot of sense. Attendance is mandatory because of iClickers, but I would recommend his class.
Stevenson is a Keynesian man. He will crush your conservative beliefs with a Keynesian hammer and turn you into an intelligent, spending person. Also, he will give you plenty of time for iClicker questions, as his countdown to close the questions goes, "3, 2, 1, 0, 0, 0." What a man.
Class was very difficult for me and the curve is rough. I think Stevenson give great lectures, sometimes goes too fast, but records them to counteract this.
Really loved Adam and the class. Thought that he did a great job of keeping lectures interesting and explaining topics well. Averages on tests are usually sort of low, but definitely not impossible if you study. Also, he has a great world sense and does a good job of adding in current events to make concepts more relatable.
Brilliant and talented lecturer. I would definitely recommend taking his class. The classes is curved so you have to be competitive. Test are average difficulty. However, a lot of though has gone into the lectures and the presentation of the material
Love Adam! His lectures are really clear and the exmas are reasonable, although it may be difficult for those who don't pay attention in class.
unnecessarily hard, exams and equations have absolutely no practical use in real life. Weeder class.
Adam is one of the best professors to have for Econ 101. He made the class easy to understand and went through the material slowly so the first exam was a breeze for majority of the class in comparison to other professors (Dudley, Caldwell) who go through course material twice as fast and gives plenty of drop opportunities for hw, clicker, and exam
You can miss 5 lectures in a semester with no penalty. Attendance is taken with iClickers and is partially graded on accuracy. Homework is graded for effort, and actually helpful to do. The lectures are all recorded and posted online, which is SUPER helpful because it's hard to keep your attention on that material heavy lectures for the full class.
Format of Econ 102 very similar to Econ 101. You can miss 5 lectures in a semester, attendance is taken with iClickers, homework is graded for effort, lectures are all recorded and posted online. Practice exams are also provided, which I don't recall being in Econ 101 and are VERY helpful.
Adam loves economics and makes you want to love economics. ECON102 isn't an easy class, but it's manageable so long as you put in the work. He's definitely one of the best econ professors out there.
Adam is a legend. Hilarious, yet professional vibe, and his passion for economics is infectious. He will make you want to take more economics classes
Professor Stevenson is a nice guy, but he is not a good teacher. Do not take his class. His lectures have nothing to do with the exam, and he moves through material at lightning speed. Get ready to do all the learning on your own, and his exams are impossible.
Really enjoyed taking ECON102 with him. The course material might be tough for some students, but as long as you study, understand the lecture slides, and do the past semester exams, you should be fine. Really love his signature iClicker countdown.
This class is math heavy, I suggest taking calc one seriously. If you plan on majoring in Econ then I highly suggest him to better prepare you for your major if not and you just need to pass Econ 102 for some reason take someone else. There are some professors where you can get an easy A but dont expect to get anything out of it.
I wanted to like this class, but it ended up being my least favorite of the semester. Professor Stevenson seemed to talk to the class like we were dumb-- I felt like the lectures moved so slowly that I would always tune out, and he gave us very few practice problems. I also had a hard time getting past his ego, pretty annoying. Overall, meh.
Great class, good speaker, take notes fast!
I have taken Econ 101, 102 and 380 with Stevenson. His lectures are information heavy, but if you take time to understand his thorough lecture slides, and understand the two homeworks he gives you before each test (which is not that much material) then you will be more than fine. Very prepared and passionate about Economics. Positive Experience.
Worst class Ive ever taken by far. Spends the entire lecture teaching concepts without ever touching the math, yet the exams are all math based. Do not take this class.
Professor Stevenson is a passionate and intelligent teacher, but his style does not fit the way I like to learn. His lectures are cluttered slideshows of neverending boredom. The word vomit is maddening and overwhelming as he speeds through lectures at Mach speed. No time for questions keeps up if you can. Exams are grueling. I don' recommend.
Very mathematical and rambled in lectures and therefore there material was sometimes unclear. I was left very confused all the time
Adam is the best professor I have ever had at Michigan. I have had him for Econ 101 and Econ 102, and he is why I am majoring in Econ. His clear passion for economics radiates throughout the lecture hall and is so inspiring. He is so funny and I always love coming to lecture to hear what he has to say. His exams are hard but the class is worth it!!
He's certainly a great professor, but his course was sometimes hard. He goes a little fast in class and sometimes the homework has problems that are just really annoying. Overall, I'd recommend him for anyone who really wants to learn economics, but not somebody who's just looking to pass econ 102.
Stevenson is energetic and passionate about Econ. However, lecture was still often dry, and he spent too much time on theory and was bad at teaching us how to set up the problems. It was hard to find the right equations from the slides and the GSI's were crap. A hard class for little reward - worse than 101 even though Macro is more interesting.
I had Professor Stevenson for both Econ 101 and 102 and really appreciated his lecturing. He's enthusiastic, passionate, and very smart. He's always well-prepared for class and definitely a great educator.
Great lectures, though he most certainly has his own Keynesian bias. He's great at explaining concepts, in his own quirky way. He is very approachable, and will answer any questions. As for his bias, it is not a partisan bias, I remember him complementing a Republican tax simplification process. He criticizes both sides plenty.
Take this class if you're interested in social programs/public policy things. The lectures (recorded) are very boring without interaction with students and difficult to get through. The class is 6 quizzes and you can drop 2 (covid policy, not usually like this). Quizzes are pretty difficult, lots of tricky questions. Group project too. Not too hard
Very passionate lecturer. Had him for 101 in-person and was great: mandatory attendance with a few drops. 102 was online with asynchronous lectures. Very generous drop policy for every type of assignment (quizzes, homeworks, article responses). Doesn't do much math during lectures. I did not read the textbook and I did fine.
Quizzes are unnecessarily difficult and doesn't reflect my knowledge on the topic. I read the textbook chapters watched all his lectures and still would get tricked by his quiz questions because they are worded poorly. It was easier and better to guess sometimes than to apply the knowledge you understand because the question is going to trick you.
Dr. Stevenson is incredibly passionate about what he teaches and the class is very fun. The class isn't very rigorous but lectures are key to doing well in the class. Overall a very enjoyable class and a must-take for Econ majors.
I really liked Professor Stevenson. He was good at teaching and you can tell he really likes what he does. I took Econ 101 online, and the quizzes were very difficult. He curved the class a lot and has drop policies, so it's not that big of a deal, but it wasn't the easiest class. You have to work and study a lot, but Stevenson makes it easier.
Econ was not my strong suit, but Stevenson tries to make it understandable. I think that if I had him in person it would of been much easier, as he made his online quizzes in lockdown browser so you couldn't check your work or go back and forth between questions. Overall a fine professor, but not the greatest.
DO NOT TAKE ECON 101 WITH STEVENSON. A horrible professor, with a horrible grading system. Avoid at all costs.
I really liked Professor Stevenson. I may have not performed well in the class, but that's on me. If you watched some lectures and did the homework honestly, you'd pretty much pass. If there is one thing to take away from ECON101, it's marginal thinking. And I have used it in my own finances (paired with simulating margins with programming). Cheers
This class is beyond difficult for a 300 level Econ. His tests are impossible to study for as there is no clear source from where to study material from. He gives previous tests, quizzes, textbooks and lectures to study from and it's way too much material to remember. Average class test grade was a C-. Please don't take Econ 380 with him
I really liked Professor Stevenson's teaching style, I thought he explained the concepts very clearly. He didn't go into the math in lecture, despite it being a huge part of the exams, but the problems sets and discussion section more than made up for that. I though the exams were tough, but the course has a really generous curve.
The course crammed too much information into each lecture and exam. Adam expected too much from his students and went way too fast in lectures. If you are good at math or passionate about econ you will be fine, but if you're doing it for a prereq or requirement try another professor. Vey math-heavy. He is very passionate about econand nice though!
Really passionate lecturer and excellent at explaining concepts. Course is moderately difficult but if you put the work in an A/A- is very doable. His passion for economics is abundantly clear which makes for an enjoyable lecture experience.
Exams were fair. Lectures were informative. Poster project at the end was very enjoyable. No complaints.
Adam is a really tough grader but explained things very clearly. Tried to help all students and was COVID conscious. Did not try to overwork students.
prof strevenson is a really nice guy and easy to talk to during office hours but his exams are extremely difficult and the majority of ur grade, I just cant get over how hard the exams are if u were a 5.0 student in highschool you would probably average a B- to C on exams. a 4.0 student would average an F
I took 102 with Stevenson in Fall 2021, in my first semester. I was taking both Econ 101 and Econ 102 at the time. And honestly, among all the classes I was taking, I enjoyed Econ 102 the most. Honestly, content can sometimes get tough, but Stevenson is very passionate about teaching and the GSI sections are definitely very useful. Best prof
One of the best economics lecturers in the department. Exams are fair and expected. Assignments, grading criteria, and syllabus are clear and concise. Recommend strongly.
Professor Stevenson is by far the best lecturer I have had in my time at Michigan. Micro and Macro could be the most boring subjects on the planet, and yet he's so passionate about them that it's hard not to get excited. Great professor, very passionate, and if you go to lectures and read the textbook, you should be able to get an A
This man is the reason the econ dept needs the grading curve it has. He is very knowledgeable and his lecture explanations are fairly good. However, for a class that is supposed to be *roughly* equal to AP Macroecon, this goes way beyond the scope of AP. If you're an econ major, Prof. Stevenson is for you, otherwise, avoid if taking as Gen Ed.
Overall pretty good teacher. A lot of his lectures I feel like had a ton of unnecessary information and he talks kind of fast. Extremely fair grader though and all around great guy
Professor Stevenson is a super great lecturer, but if you are taking 101 as distribution, please pay attention and take notes! Also, exam 2 is way harder than exam 1, my test grade literally dropped 40%, but it was because I didn't go to lecture/take notes. Stevenson is overall super energetic and enthusiastic about economics.
His lectures were boring and he was not helpful at all when I reached out. The GSI was the only teacher that taught me the most. I had to learn it by myself, because he is not good at keeping me interested. He presents weird.
Professor Stevenson is clearly very knowledgeable and passionate about economics; this comes through in his lectures. I took econ101 for gen ed, and math is definitely not my strong suit. However, I feel as long as you take notes and study for the exams, you should be able to get a B- at the least. The lectures can be very info-dense.
Adam is an amazing professor. He makes lectures engaging, which is impressive considering how dull micro economics can be. The class is difficult, but if you pay attention and really study before the exams, a B+ or higher is totally doable due to the dept-wide curve. I cannot recommend Stevenson enough for Econ 101 as a pre-req to the major/minor.
Professor Stevenson is a great lecturer and is very engaging.
Professor Stevenson was an engaging lecturer who explained the material well. From day one, he was clear on what was to be expected during the course and was organized throughout the entire semester. All of the lectures were recorded, there were practice tests available before every exam, and discussion sections with handouts for more practice.
I had Prof Stevenson for Econ 101 & took him again for 102. He is so passionate & knowledgable about the subject that it makes the driest material I have ever encountered at least somewhat engaging. This class is HARD, but if you put in the work, it is entirely doable (also, the readings can easily be skipped if you study the lectures enough).
Tough grader absolutely, and class contents are harder than 4 credit class; passionate lecturer but the slides could be formatted better, and exam could be phrased more accurately; not merciful in terms of higher grades cutoff so prepare yourself to not screw up any of the exams
The course has three midterms and one final project. Two two-hours of lecture every week and there is no discussion for this class. Don't understand why it is a three-credit course as the course is so hard and there is no way to prepare well for the exam. You have to get 27/30 for all three exams to get an A in this class. DONT TAKE IT
I didn't find Prof. Stevenson to be helpful, and 102 was very difficult for being an intro class. On exams, there'll be questions worth 2-6 points (or more) based around minute details from one lecture that the professor spent less than 2 mins going over. He often responds to students' questions in demeaning ways which makes learning much harder.
Stevenson might have the most thorough Canvas site at Michigan. He lays the entire semester out from Day 1 and sets very clear expectations for the final group project. His problem sets are graded for completion. As long as you keep up with the problem sets and lecture, you'll do fine. It might be harder if you haven't taken Econ 401 yet.
Stevenson is a good lecturer, he gave pretty clear explanations and kept his lectures as engaging as he could. Like 101, 102 is really only graded on exams so you have to study and watch lecture whether it be the recordings or in person. Go to GSI section if you're struggling and do it before you fail something.
Records all lectures, has every piece of material you need posted on canvas. Definitely takes some time and effort to do well in this class, but from day one to the final exam I felt I had everything I needed to pass. Also a pretty charismatic and engaging lecturer.
One of the better professors for Econ in my opinion. Psets are graded for effort rather than accuracy which is nice. Exams are challenging and require thorough consideration because it's easy to mistake one term for the other. Otherwise good class and DEFINITELY go to discussion.
attendance not mandatory. his lectures keep me interested and exams are not tricky. I will be taking him next semester for 102
The professor is an engaging lecturer, but this class requires serious effort. Attending lectures, studying the material, and utilizing resources like ChatGPT and Unstuck ai can really help with exam prep. Overall, a challenging yet rewarding course if you're willing to put in the work.
His corny jokes and weird attitude towards students' questions take away from the learning experience of his lectures. This course is especially math-heavy for principles of macroecon, so be ready for that. There was no reason for the exams to be as confusing as they were, I received an A+ in Econ 101 while studying less.
wack. don't take a class with him
Prof. Stevenson is one of my favorite professors as he is passionate about economics and explains concepts in a concise way. I enjoy the way he speaks and how the class was structured. Talked to him during an advising appointment and he seemed happy to help and talk about economics and else. Exams are worth over 80% of your grade so study hard!
avoid stevenson if you can. his lectures are abysmal.
Adam Stevenson is a great instructor. The course material can be kind of dry, but nonetheless he prepares you well for the exams. Practice tests are your best friend. It would help to read the textbook but you don't need to. Problem sets are graded on completion so it's pretty stress free getting them done. Discussion sections are not mandatory.
Stevenson is the best lecturer I have ever had. I am taking his 101 class next semester because he is so great. He cares so much about his class and is very accommodating outside of class.
Avoid if possible
Steveson thrives on 'gotcha' questions where he can trick you and avoid focusing on the true economic theories we are learning. Be prepared to grind for countless hours to get high scores on his exams.
I am not a big fan of economics and could have studied more, so my grade reflects that. But I think he was a great lecturer, I always understood the general concepts of things - but it can be tedious (not his fault its the topics sometimes). The exams are tricky (short answer and MC), and you need to be able to grind for about a week before.
I really enjoyed Dr. Stevenson's course. I thought he was a great lecturer and was passionate about the material. This is a lecture-heavy course, and I'd recommend going to discussion and taking the problem sets seriously. Although there is a textbook, I got by without reading it and focused more on understanding the problem sets and old exams.
Stevenson is hard, and his grading is tough. Even if you grind for the exams, it all depends on your luck with the SAQs you get. Lectures were kinda weird, he was rude to students who asked questions and his erratic style was cringe.
I thought he was pretty good, if you take him I highly recommend taking all the practice exams before and making sure you understand each question. He's really passionate about the class which can come off as him being insane but I liked the guy, kept me engaged with the material, just work hard and you'll be fine.
Adam Stevenson is my favorite professor I have had so far at U of M. He is a captivating lecturer, inspiring me to attend every one and be excited about it. I looked forward to his classes. His lectures were very clear and all of his information was very accessible. Would respond
Professor Stevenson was great! Attendance wasn't mandatory and lectures were recorded. If you do the problem sets well and can explain the material intuitively, you will be fine!
he can't teach tbh
Worst Econ class. So hard for no reason. How does it count as teaching when you just read off slides?
Amazing professor. Class was challenging but this guy knows his stuff. Incredibly passionate about Economics and applies all content to the real world which I find to be very helpful. Took him for 101 and made sure I took him for 102 as well. You can get by taking an easier prof but if you want to major in Econ this guy is going to prepare you well
I literally had to be hospitalized bc I got in a bad accident and I had a midterm like the next day, and he wouldn't let me take it a different time. When I emailed him, he basically just said "well that sucks but you still have to take it with the rest of the students." He was extremely disrespectful but other than that it was fine i guess.
Comes off as very weird and is a rather rude person if you happen to interact with him. Sadly, he is one of those teachers you might need to take if you're an Econ major. Shame!
Around 80 percent of your grade is exam based. The homework's assigned aren't too bad, but wish it made more of your overall grade. Exams are HARD, and you definitely need to study far in advance to do well. The curve helps. Lectures are okay, he's very passionate, but not that great at explaining thoroughly.
Don't recommend if you don't do well on Exams.
I really like Adam, I think he's a very passionate lecturer and an understanding person if you chat with him. I think a lot of the complaints come from issues with the format of the econ beginning classes in general. I've taken 320 and 380 with him and he's a good professor.
Could not stand his lectures; he has a way with boredom! He had this weird smell when I met him.
Adam was a very organized lecturer and made his expectations of students clear every week. Homework is not graded by completion and tests matched the study resources. It is impossible to do poorly in this class if you are keeping up with the lecture content (textbook, slides, etc.) and reading weekly announcements to turn things in on time.
Adam is very clear, he isn't trying to trick you. Posts past exams, emphasizes what is important. I really appreciated his passionate teaching style that kept me engaged. He doesn't seem enthusiastic about students attending office hours, however. He would rather you ask questions online or figure it out for yourself.
super easy class, everything on the exam is explicitly on the lectures or hw. annoying group project though
Lectures were super clear and all available online. Very energetic and good speaker. Exams are very similar to the examples provided and all material is covered in lecture. Would take again.
