Most confusing class you'll ever take. Half the stuff doesn't make sense and is way too complicated for a 101 class. They way the homework and assignments are laid out make it so frustrating.
Adam is not a bad guy by any means, however I found that the layout of the assignments were very confusing. The assignment dates as well as the criteria kept changing (although the changes were to the students' benefit). The class is an easy A if you do the assignments, however it is difficult to pinpoint what the assignments are.
There are three modules that you do and other in-class homework that will determine your grade. You can redo them but they take forever to do and are confusing, plus you don't get feedback very quick. I went to class, but he often talked in circles and not much of it helped with the actual assignment. Very frustrating class and didn't teach me much
His assignments are confusing and chaotic
He is a philosophy professor and it shows. His lectures and instructions are sometimes a lot. The way this class was formatted took some getting used to, but once I did it was easy to get done. The homework was manageable and if you got enough homework done, you would not have to be tested at all for the class. Lectures are pointless sometimes.
Adam is a really nice guy, but not a great professor. He said that the class would be mostly discussion based but then he ended up lecturing everyday on topics that didn't relate to our assignments. I never got feedback in a timely manner and the feedback was often confusing. Also the grading system and the format of the class are irrational.
Adam is the worst professor I have had in my college career (I'm a senior). The way he runs his class makes absolutely no sense, and as soon as you think you understand it something has changed. He is horrible at giving feedback in a timely manner, which is critical for the course. I would not recommend this class to anyone. Would put a 0 for #2
Grading rubric is absolutely terrible, it's not clear and seems to constantly change. Sends 50 emails instead of posting 1 announcement. 80 people in my class and 2 months in only 15-20 people would show up. His lectures are pointless, the only reason to show up is to get in class work points. Terrible feedback that takes forever to get back.
The class is pass/no pass which we were not aware of until our first assignment. The TA is rude and not helpful at all. He posts 4 videos for every assignment that are an hour long but doesn't do anything in class. No one understands what is going on or what is expected of us. SO much confusion and headache. Bad class. Regret taking heavily.
Even though I struggled to attend as much as I would've liked and barely participated, I managed to get an A+. My advice is just to put effort or some degree of passion into your homework (analyzing ethics journals essentially) and you'll be compensated accordingly. A nice guy, but more of a friend than a professor. TAs give more feedback generally
He never gets to his point when talking, is supposed to be for a grade but treats it as p/np, holds you late, very vague/scrambled, exams/homework make no sense, failed me out of a whole exam for missing one little thing, way too hard for an ACE and the list goes on. WORST professor I have ever had, dropped it b/c it made my semester so stressful.
Dr. Thompson is the worst professor I have experienced in my entire academic career. His lectures are confusing and he talks in circles, he doesn't know what he's talking about and can't answer questions. His grading criteria are awful, you never get feedback and it takes weeks to get back exams. Don't take his classes unless you like wasting time.
He's a very nice sweet guy don't get me wrong but I wish I didn't choose this class for an ACE course. This class is graded so weird. There is no "grades" section on the canvas page. You have to download a spread sheet and look for your NUID number on a T-chart to see what your grade is. He talks so much and it doesn't make sense at all.
Although Adam did a lot of talking, he's a nice guy. The grading was also a little weird and hard to understand at first. As long as you do a majority of the assignments, you should be good. Ask for help, that's what professors are here for!
Adam is nice, inclusive, and passionate about his job. But I would not take a high level w/ him b/c I think it would be too complex, and not b/c it's philosophy. I think he has trouble communicating clearly. The assignments are overly complex but the content of the lectures is shallow. Also had to download an excel file every week for grades
I have taken two classes with this professor, and I will be taking my third this coming Fall. His grading style is a little non-standard, but it is mostly based on completion grades which I really appreciate. I am a philosophy minor, and he has been my best experience with a teacher within that department at UNL.
The glass is graded by passing or failing assignments He wants you to learn and grow as a person more than a final grade. He wants to help you and is passionate that anyone can do this if they keep working The first 2 units are easy for most people coming from a math class, but U3 proofs are hard (Textbook is free)
Most of the homework is graded by pass or no pass, he allows you to retake any quiz without having a time frame, and each test you are able to do re-take within so much time after taking it the first time. The grading is different from regular grading. He does it best to help you better understand each topic you'll go over.
Adam is truly a caring professor! He encourages the students to engage in lectures and group activities. He really wants what is best for the students. The only issue is that his assignments can be unclear of what he is wanting us to accomplish. Very good professor though!
He is very lenient on the work he receives and how he grades the assignments. He does go on tangents but you don't need to follow along. Even if you are not passionate about the topics like him he still makes class interesting. You can participate in class in many ways but he does not push you if you do not feel comfortable talking about the topic.
I absolutely loved taking this class with Adam,I took it for my Ace 3. You pass the assignments if you do them even if you make mistakes, and he prioritized learning the material over anything else. As someone with a learning disability it was extra meaningful that he didn't talk down to us or speak condescendingly when we asked questions. LOVE HIM
I thought adam was nice, I did go to him for help one time and he didn't even know how to do it?? Felt like if he was teaching the class maybe he should know what he was doing?? Idk. Really cared ab his students tho and made it easy to pass his class.
Overall, Adam is a friendly and caring person. But his assignments are confusing. The only thing I like about his class is he is willing to help you and the exams wise, and he lets you retake them. I didn't like the class because all he did was talk the whole class time.
He has a very hard time explaining concepts fluently. I tried zooming with him for extra help. He left me more confused than when I got there. The class is too hard, and should have someone very knowledgeable about the subject before teaching it. He is a nice man, but his class is just not worth suffering over.
One of the worst classes to take as a 1st-semester freshman. prof would talk about how he "doesn't like lecturing for most of the class" and would then proceed to talk for 90% of the lecture. will scarcely help students with any late or missing work that he assigned with a subjective grading mindset. avoid it, it ain't worth it.
Yes, it's a philosophy class, but don't overthink the assignments. It's a tough class with a confusing professor, but don't overthink the assignments. Most likely, you will get the credit.
He is really a nice, caring guy. The assignments may seem odd, but he will happily go over them and tell you exactly what you need to do to do better. He cares about his students doing well. I've taken 2 classes with him and would take more. I enjoy going to his classes, and he is very open to opposing viewpoints (mine included).
Professor Thompson is a kind man, and is very knowledgable in philosophy. He does, however, struggle to give comprehensive lectures that can be identified with the course work. The system he uses for grading and organizing material is much more confusing than it needs to be; something that even he verbally recognized ad one point.
PLEASE READ 1) Adam is very nice & remembers names. But his lectures lack substance & he clearly has no lesson plan he just rambles on about stuff that has nothing to do with our assignments 2) You will get nothing out of this class but can receive an A. On every assignment I would write one sentence and procced to get a pass on every assignment
Dr. Thompson is a very caring soul. Other than that he was a lackluster professor as there were several instances that he did not clarify on assignments that several failed. He is an extremely confusing professor with even more confusing criteria to pass. If given the chance, DO NOT TAKE HIM!
His goal for this class was to get people thinking, which he did a very good job of doing. He always encouraged us, regardless of if he agreed with what we were saying. He teaches philosophy, so participation matters a lot. Class was very interesting, and passing was easy. If you pass one exam, you get a minimum of a C-.Would definitely take again
Professor Thompson really cares about his students and their success. He is personally very good at what he does, but he struggles with articulating what he wants from his students. I would highly recommend if you're taking his classes, go to his office hours. He gives much better feedback and he appreciates devoted students.
Genuinely easy-- interesting too. Adam is very caring and wants his students to succeed. Everything is on a pass/fail basis and is wildly easy as exams you have a few attempts to submit it. Each exam is a piece of the final project (the inquiry-base) and you pick a sole current event/issue. Good luck, you will love him!
He's a nice guy, but his directions are so vague that the hardest part of the class is deciphering them. He talks a lot during lectures, which somehow doesn't help. The best solution for this is asking for help via email or during office hours, but even that only helps half the time. He's not bad otherwise, but this flaw is too prominent to ignore.
To begin, Dr. Thompson doesn't give a good outline of the course. He doesn't describe how to navigate his Canvas page or how to keep up with the material being taught in the textbook. During lectures, he drolls on in a strange order about different topics - he doesn't talk about things in order really or much in relation to quizzes or exams.
Adam is nice and all but he clearly has no clue how to teach. I stopped going to classes because I can't sit through an hour and fifteen minutes of monotone rambling. He has no lesson plan and no solid method of teaching this class. And the worst part is that he was the only option because it was a Thompson Scholars section. I'd pick anyone else.
I found this class really enjoyable and I enjoyed his lectures. Yes he does ramble at times, but he really does give a lot of class time for students to offer their thoughts and talk about them with other students. He is also very accessible via email and really cares about his students.
This class tends to be a little lecture heavy, but for a philosophy course I thought Adam did a great job of involving students in class discussions regardless of their background in philosophy. Grading is a little confusing but he is easy to reach and was happy to update you on your grade when asked. Office hours were also helpful for assignments
Is never clear on anything Spends a majority of class rambling
Everything about this class is confusing. As well to get a C+ or higher in the class you need to pass level drafts and a level exam. You can fail any of them by using one wrong word. Granted you can retake it but I have never left a class or lecture more confused then I have with him. Lecture is just a big rant and rambling about anything.
Professor Thompson does not teach you how to use his Canvas page and there is not real outline for the class. There are so many odd rules to pass the class or each "level" as he states. The Level Drafts and Exams make no sense because during our lectures he rambles about things that have nothing to do with what we are supposed to be learning.
The class is set up extremely weird and this makes it difficult to pass the class. Thompson separates the course through pass/fail "Levels", and you have to pass a level in order to move onto the next. No matter what I have done assignment and attendance wise has had no effect on my grade and I'm gonna fail if I can't pass this second level.
I took this expecting a nice class for an ace but nope. The lectures are pointless but attendance is mandatory. The way he structured the lectures, grading, and assignments made it the most confusing and least enjoyable class I've had in awhile. I also didn't get a grade in the gradebook until Thanksgiving Break. Don't take a class with him. Trust.
He rambles a lot, and it's hard to get anything from the lectures. Grading system is weird and hard to get... There's levels and you have to pass a level to move onto the next. Canvas for this class is also set up weird. No one ever knows what's going on. Overall, it's just way more difficult and confusing than it should be.
Couldn't stand him. He rambles on and on and on in class and never actually taught anything. I learned absolutely nothing from this class. All these pre and post acts were a waste of my time. The class wasn't hard. He also screwed up my grade and submitted the wrong thing to MyRed at the end of the semester, which I had to bring to his attention.
Listen to the reviews: DO NOT TAKE HIM AS A PROFESSOR. He doesn't have a clue to what he is doing. So many people I knew had to retake this class several times in order to TRY passing. He rambles like crazy and there is no solid explanation on anything. You'll be left more confused and more anxious than anything. Do NOT take his class EVER.
Adam is passionate about logic and this is clear when he is teaching. Sometimes I think he forgets that this is a beginner logic class. So, it can be easy to get a tad bit lost. The grading is a bit peculiar as well, but once he explains it actually is super useful and helps you more than hinders you in the long term.
This is for PHIL 107 You're graded by much points you have, There are perks to this grading. If a grade is posted, the grade won't fall, usually. Getting a decent score in Part 1&2 means you automatically pass (with a C). Read the student inquiry or ask. He is very nice, and he understands that his grading system is weird, so just ask!
I had heard not great things about this professor which made me nervous to take his course. I think he has improved his teaching style. While the grading system is somewhat confusing at first, as long as you do the weekly homework you're usually fine. Thompson is a very friendly guy, communicating with him goes a long way. Don't fear this course!
Do not take a class with this man for the love of everything good in this world. He recorded Zoom videos incorrectly, making it impossible to see the work he was doing. When I asked him to re-record the videos, he said he could do " nothing " about it. He then begged us not to leave him bad reviews on here and in our course evaluations...
If you are not a philosophy major, please please do not take classes with Adam. His lectures are mostly just him rambling and it's hard to understand what he's saying if you don't know how to think philosophy. I rely on the TA to teach me the coursework but even the TA has a hard time understanding Adam.
This professor is great, his grading system is difficult to understand at first but trust me it is AWESOME. All you have to do is the bare minimum and you end with a A- , plus he is super flexible about deadlines, everything is not due until two weeks after he says it is.
This professor was one of the best I have taken, he does ramble but it is easy to understand what he is saying, his grading system is based on progress. This is very useful because if you had a life event that ruined an exam grade or maybe get a little behind there is still hope for you to get the grade you want. He provides very good feedback.
While understanding his grading system was annoying and time consuming, this course was an easy A while still having interesting content and class discussion. Adam gives you the freedom to spend little time or lots of time with the material. You may or not appreciate his lectures. He will tangent and free associate often.
His grading style can be a bit confusing, but it should become clear how it works due to the fact your grade won't drop it can only go up I feel that the lectures are him rambling, but he is trying to encourage you to think philosophically. The tests aren't too bad you just have to memorize a few things, and you should pass all your exams.
Adam will pace around the room and give you a crazy amount of information within the hour or so you have with him, but if you really are paying attention it's him putting the same information in so many ways so that you can grasp it on a much deeper level. However knowing each concept on a very deep level isn't needed so its easy to understand.
This class was graded very oddly in my opinion. As long as you did the homework you get completion points, and just have to pass the test to continue raising your grade. I did not like the way he taught the material, or the way things were done in this class.
Super easy class, i would 100% take it again, it was a little confusing with the grading at first, but he really want you to do 2 assignments per week, and the student inquiries. if you do those things you'll pass the class, he's also very understanding so if you have something going on, just let him know it'll most likely work out in your favor
The class has lectures, group projects, individual assignments, and papers as tests. The nice thing about the tests are that if you don't pass on the first try or the second try you can keep working on the papers along with the next papers so there is always a chance you can pass the class. Dr. Thompson is always available for office hours.
grading for this class was so confusing and every project was hard to understand I learned nothing.
This man is so confusing. He doesn't even talk about medical ethics. His grading makes no sense and his lectures are even worse. This class is a joke.
I liked this class. True, lots to do but most assignments are graded for completion. Also, once you have a grade you will not earn a grade lower--so, if you're happy with your C, you can stop doing the assignments. Professor is respectful, interesting, and very interested in what his students think--rmembers our names even in a 100+ student class.
enjoyed it;; professor very understanding;; grading system is different, but actually more helpful than others;; course was interesting
I liked it! I stopped before the final b/c I already had a high enough grade to pass. I'm not sure how it applies to my major, other than things to do with ethics and tech I might use, AI stuff was interesting.
class--unclear why it's part of our major but professor is understanding, respectful, easy to talk to I fell behind a bit and was able to work with him to get back on track and ended up with a B-
grading is odd, but clear and he works with you if you fall behind and actually the grading is set up to make it difficult not to succeed at some level lots to read, that I didn't and still managed an A
I don't know I mean the class is required so that sucks but it likely sucks for him to grading was clear enough to pass and I stopped once I had a passing grade because it won't go down after that
I took this class on a whim to satisfy a requirement it was philosophy and interesting but I'm sure I didn't retain much still if you do the work you'll do great I didn't keep up with it but was able to come back after talking with Dr. Adam which was helpful
he was a good professor I didn't understand his grading thing at first but is basically just doing completion work each week then an exam and funky at-home thing that was eventually graded as the final I liked it but could've done better maybe
I mean the material is very difficult but I feel like he did a good job helping us learn it he broke his leg in like February and still taught us through the semester which is crazy I liked him and got my A so I don't know just do the work : /
I'm weird but I thought he was funny. I liked the homework set up just complete most of it and it passes. Maybe it could've been a little more challenging to actually get a certain grade but the material was difficult I mean it's philosophy so
He talks like he is on a different planet, makes no sense.
so far as professors go, I thought he was great! I had to miss class due to illness often and it was always excused, no questions asked there's a lot to do, but it is all graded for completion so I mean just do it, study for the exams, you'll do great watch the videos if you get lost
I liked him - do the work as best you can if its complete it passes study for exams and watch the videos also, attendance is not actually mandatory there are ways to earn credit for being there without being there
I liked it, let's you stop when you need to so, yeah I ended with a low B but prob could of gotten a higher one or an A if I would of just kept going for a required course or to get an ACE 8 its a good choice
I really liked the professor but he does pace I guess lol he's just drinking a lot of coffee let me get a C and check out worked for me
I really liked this class! it was challenging but I thought the professor was fair and even funny at times or maybe I should say he seemed to always keep things light and keep us focused more on the skills we could gain from participating; also doesn't just talk we did stuff! good for my last philosophy course here at UNL
super deep but pretty fun the professor really likes to read the text with you in class or do things like ask us to draw the argument like others said if I had not been so busy I probably could have got a better grade but it was good I'd take another with him if I could but I'm all done!!
Dr. Thompson is very knowledgeable in philosophy, but isn't a great teacher. He likes to ramble in class, and then the tests don't really have anything to do with the class work. The pre acts and post acts are a waste of time, and I don't feel like I've really learned anything from this class. DON'T take this class if you don't have to.
I took medical ethics with professor Thompson. He seems to be very knowledgeable in Philosophy but I learned almost nothing about medical ethics. Half the time I left the class more confused than when I showed up, and his grading system is very confusing. His class isn't overly difficult, I just personally wouldn't suggest taking it.
Honestly one of the worst professors I've had, am a senior trying to complete my last ace, and this guy intentionally makes all of his documents and explanations as hard to understand as possible to make himself sound more, "philosophical" and smart. Wouldn't recommend this class to anyone as it's a giant waste of time. Sorry excuse of a Professor
Professor Thompson is frustrating at times because I feel like he isn't always the best at getting his point across in a way that is easily understood. However, it seems pretty clear he knows this, and spends extra time giving more information on assignments in canvas. As long as you're willing to do some extra work it's a great class to take.
Dr Thompson is very passionate and very intelligent when it comes to his field. Like it's been said, he can be hard to understand in terms of assignments and expectations, but if you talk to him you start to get it. Communication matters, and its a thought provoking class.
He's absolutely TERRIBLE explaining things. Asking questions get you more confused then before, and things you can answer in a simple one sentence response he's somehow answers in 3 minutes. His grading is the weirdest ever and the tests aren't even beneficial/related to anything. I don't know how this guy was ever allowed to teach "medical ethics"
If I could sum up medical ethics, it would be that this class is a joke. You aren't learning about medical ethics, its literally philosophy papers with medical related issues sprinkled in. Your grade heavily relies on the tests he gives and even those don't make any sense. The grading is a complete joke and you are better off not taking this class.
He is chill, do not expect to understand the class if you don't ask questions. Most of the "assignments" (Pre and Post Acts) are pretty easy and can be done with outside factors. I enjoyed listening to the lectures but I wouldn't say it particularly helped with understanding exams. If you are a wonderer, then the class is a decent challenge.
