Be prepared to write till your hand falls off
wow overheads!
can't stand the hair or way she talks
not quite a great lecturer, overheads don't quite make sense, but willing to hel

Very Annoying and Overheads unclear!!
good attitude but needs better format for her notes
*ring ring* oh it's 1987 for you ms. nelson. they want their hair back

holy overheads!!!
I think I have carpel tunnel syndrome from writing so damn many notes off ovrhed
What is the statistic for the # of students gone blind from her overheads?
I hope you can write fast.....
Lots of overheads. She has really big hair. No microphone needed for her.
helpful and SO NICE....down to earth and not intimidating to talk to
Um, hi, tests ? VERY hard.

big hair, lots of confusing overheads. tests got harder as year went on.

Lots of overheads, but interesting course and she is friendly and approachable.

Very confusing lectures. Couldn't understand her at all. hard exams too.
Exams are manipulative mind games. Stay away.
smart lady, terrible, terrible lecturer. tone down everthing cindy lauper

very nice, love the hair, the m/c tests are harder then expected
Horrible during lectures. Tries to impress student by throwing out books and ot
The course is interesting - lectures okay - but her format is mind numbing - no room for discussion and multiple choice - all about memorization- BORING!
somewhat interesting course; lectures are too long and hard to understand at times; why not speak in english not gibberish!!; tests are very hard and focuses on memorization WAY too much; very nice lady who is always willing to help though
Interesting material - useless presentation. Multiple choice exams are a sign of a lazy professor.
Great!
Powerful mind plus mercurial stage presence - makes the subject fascinating. Terrific course.
Intellectual powerhouse who knows how to make a tough subject riveting!
Really knows her stuff. Super charisma and great sense of humour. Take this course.
Not an easy "A", but well worth the effort. A warm, kind lady who will always take the time to help and explain. Great teacher!
What a relief - a course hasn't succumbed to the appalling dumbing-down that characterizes so many Arts courses! An intellectual joy-ride! Brava!
Brilliant, witty prof. Nimble, exciting mind! Helped me develop analytical powers, examine issues with more subtlety and sophistication.
Her lectures are not only clear and coherent, they're exciting, too. I especially appreciated the way she treats students with respect and sincerity.
This one dazzled me. Why aren't there more profs like this? Like watching the Discovery Channel and the Comedy Network at the same time!
Awesome teacher. Tremendously knowledgeable, impeccably prepared, scintillatingly witty. Superb course.
I found this to be an amazing course. This prof had me totally intrigued with the questions she had us explore. A truly dedicated teacher who provides extraordinary notes and generous help.
Brilliant mind, terrific personality, and easy on the eyes. What more could you ask for?
What a great course! A gifted, vibrant teacher - witty, dynamic exposition made the material sparkle. Very generous of her time and help.
Wonderful speaker to listen too, good topic choices, easy internet-posted lecture notes. One of the more interesting courses I took that term... just be sure to keep up on readings, otherwise the exams will kill you.
I really enjoyed this class. I thought the prof was quite entertaining and I really liked the subject material. She also gave the whole class extra marks on all our in class tests.
Lectures are somewhat boring and repetitive. Tests are easy if you memorize the text and key points from the lectures. She is always willing to help students out...but watch out for the hair!
First day I saw her I thought she was Howard Stern! Her tests are alright if yah read the book and go to ALL lectures. However Lectures do contain every word in the Thesaurus - SPEAK ENGLISH!
One of my favorite profs... she has amazing stories and great experiences to share with the class. Speaking with her in her office about material is abosolutly helpful
Very nice woman, but the course format is extremely ineffective. The memorization of statistics has no educational value whatsoever.
Fantastic prof! Awesome class! She knows what she's talking about! Tests are a bit difficult and you need to make sure to come to class if you even want to think about passing.
She is so funny! She makes her material interesting by joking around. She is the reason I switched my major to sociology. Taking her class was the best thing I've ever done!
Way cool prof! she shares her experiences to help students learn! she is my biggest romodel! shes the best!

Absolutely Fabulous Prof! Intersting material! Brilliant class!
Brilliant proffesor! Love her class! Love the text book! Awesome! She's my biggest role model!
AMAZING PROF...one of the best i've had!!!!
Good prof but the multiple choice tests ae a lazy way to mark and the tests are to hard. To many stats to remember and she picks info to test that is not the major themes of the course. Overall good teacher but lazy and impossible tests to study for!
Coolest Prof I've ever had!
Real good prof. Her classes and lectures are really fun too. Tests are bit tricky but O.K-not too bad. Overall rating is EXCELLENT!
I've gone to every class and it just keeps getting better and better! She is the tops dude!
Tries to speak with an english accent---kinda annoying
Brilliant woman but sometimes tries to speak in a language to make herself sound intellectual which is unnecessary. She is extremely smart though and very interesting.
Her intelligence is inspiring, and she is extremely helpful. Seems intimidating in lectures but is very approachable and open in person. Her multiple choice questions are kind of tricky though...but overall, great teacher and interesting class.
Best prof EVER! I never had such an INTERESTING course in all my time at university. Prof. Nelson is probably the most brilliant prof I have ever come upon!
She is so cool! Talk about a wild class. I have never been so interested in the material or have enjoyed such a class in all my time at U of W. She is totally fantastic prof! Awesome!
Interesting class, shes a little nutty but I would still definatley recommend one of her classes
Crazy hair!! Wow! But otherwise, great prof! She should actually teach a class to other profs on how to be fair! (Like, NON-cumulative tests, marks back within 24 hrs, being available for help often, approachable, funny) Other profs should learn from her!
Exams are non-cumulative and multiple choice. arnt hard at all. Most approachable prof at UW. very helpful, and always has exams back within 24hrs. Definitely reccomend this class.
Great Prof. Awesome Lecutres. Great Video Choices. Totally fair tests. What's up with the sailor jacket? HIGHLY recommend the class!
Excellent Prof! As long as you go to classes and do the readings, you will do great. Extremely helpful, and will go out of her way to help students. However, she speaks fairly fast and uses an english accent at times which gets kinda annoying, but all in all, one of the best profs tat I've had at UW

She is extremely knowledgeable, friendly, helpful, and she's hilarious to boot. She's very willing to help you at YOUR convieniance, and goes out of her way to make sure that her students understand the material. Her tests are fair and she even reschedules individual writing times when needed.
Brilliant, brilliant prof! Amazing lectures, and SOOOO funny! Very helpful and totally fair. You've got to take this course!
Great course but hurt multiple choice portions of test are a little tough... You need to know exactly details and specifics...
VERY approachable, responds to emails instantaneously. Also very witty and humourous. However, not a fan of her voice - uses 20 words instead of 10 to describe simple concepts.
She is a VERY nice, approachable prof. Always willing to do anything she can to help you at your convenience. Tests are returned within 24 hours!!! wow! However, her lectures are VERY wordy and a tad dry. Her tests are a bit difficult but she gives you the essay question options ahead of time.
She's open to meet anytime of day and is very helpful for students worried about the MC exams...
A very well preparded prof. Lectures were interesting. But exams are hard even if you study. Course grading needs to be adjusted. Three muliple choice tests is how the grade is determined. Class mean was 60 most of the time. If you have to take this class fine, but I suggest avioding it as it will hurt your average.
She is so so nice. Will do any thing to help her students. Very smart. Lectures are a bit boring, but i think thats only cuz i had her for a 3 hour class. Tests are hard, you have to do all the readings and go to all the classes. But she is a great teacher. I will definitely take another class with her.
This course was way harder than it should have been. The tests are extremely tough - I studied and this course was by far my lowest mark of the semester and dropped my average. She says "again" in an annoyingly random British accent a LOT.
Great teaching. Lectures are a little boring because of the length. Prof is VERY carying on an educational and personal level. Willing to do anthing to help you. Tests are easy if you are good @ multiple choice. If you are not good.. learn to pair certain words together.
What a disgrace to a great University. She was the only prof of mine not to hold course evaluations. I wonder why. Tests dwell on mundane and insignificant details, and are far more difficult than need be. Forget general trends and patterns, she wants to know what specific term an insignificant researcher in the text once used 45 years ago.
Amazing class so far! Attend lecture, read the text, study for a respectable amount of time, and you'll do fine! Hers are the most reasonable tests I've had at UW so far! Very fair!
Excellent prof! She's clear in her expectation, though I found the multiple choice questions that come out of the text to be more challenging than questions that pertain to lectures. I absolutely enjoyed her class and would recommend her to anyone!
Multiple Choice tests were awful and questions were specific, trivial details. Watch out. Prof was nice outside of class, but inside she's not great. She raised the first two mid-term makes, 20 % and 8 %. Would not recommend this class it dropped my gpa signicantly.
I didn't realize paying all this tuition meant that classes should be easy. Nelson weeds out the lazy from the dedicated. Her tests are a reflection of time spent studying compared to the night before. Is able to meet at any hour, holiday to help you succeed. You won't do well if you rely on overheads and word of mouth, BUT ITS UNIVERSITY.
Quite funny in class and in person. Terrible fashion sense. Always available for help, or just to chat. MUST attend class in order to get a good mark, exams are 50% lectures, 50% textbook. Often gives hints for exams. Has irritating way of pronouncing certain words, eg. Again = agayn. Gah! But she's awesome other than that :) Highly reccomend.
All tests multiple choice, part text part lecture - not on slides!!! Must go to class to do at all well. Very flexible and willing to meet at your convenience if you want help. Funny, enjoyable, and informative. Has some some flexibility with test dates, if you /need/ it. Don't ever try b.s.ing her though, she will see through it. Your funeral.
Do NOT expect a high mark in this class!
Ms. Nelson, I really loved your class. Good real world examples that made the subject material all the more interesting. Don't change a thing. Very inspiring.
This prof is terrible. No question she's smart, but she isn't an educator. Doesn't care about her students, not flexible at all with timetable conflicts, rude to the class and her midterms don't make sense, even if you study your brains out. Both our midterms had to be boosted; 1 by 30% and 1 by 20%.
Prof's lectures are too wordy, very hard to follow. Doesn't get straight to the point hard to take notes. Tests are super hard even if you study. Very specific questions. NO Bellcurving! Don't expect a high mark, will kill your average!
http://arts.uwaterloo.ca/~kwesthue/self-study.htm
HARSH, STUDY HARD ON NOTES, I studied my brains out ... NOT EASY
SO FUNNY AND INTERESTING
You have to dedicate a lot of time into your studying to get just a 70%....
Nice Prof - however she cannot teach very well. Her classes consist of her talking almost non-stop for the whole 3 hours, and classes became empty quickly. Her tests are way to hard as well - small details. However, she is very approachable and offers good advice and help when sought.
>:( DISLIKE!! I tried going to every lecture but she is SO hard to listen to. No class discussions. Hardly any input from students. Her talking, for three hours. Monotone. I had such high hopes for Criminology :(
Did not enjoy her teaching style at all. Would not recommend. I studied very hard and still got a bad mark and usually I don't. Did not think she could teach but she does know the material very well. Very specific and random questions on the exam.
Not great at lecturing, her speeches seemed very unorganized and were hard to follow..... for 3 hours in the evening!! Which felt like 6 hours. However she is very helpful and responds quickly and clearly to emails. But the lectures were hardly bearable.
she is a very funny professor. seems very nice and approachable. A bit difficult to follow at times, but if you keep up with textbook readings and have good notes from class, you should get a good mark.
Adie is an amazing prof. She`s hilarious and very passionate about the subject. Lectures can be unbearable but exams extremely fair. Attend class and read the textbook you should easily get an 80. She is always available through email or during her office hours so if you need help she's available. She will also provide hints to ace her exams.
Very bad teacher. Lectures are awful. No constant train of thought or any main points are brought up. Multiple choice exams are easy. Just do some of your own research and you will be fine without having to subject yourself to the lectures.
Tests are fair as long as you do your readings and go to class. She is entertaining, but her lecture notes are not always the easiest to follow.
She is a very nice prof, tries her best to have class do well on her exams. 25 lecture questions, 25 textbook questions. Lectures are very hard to get through. Textbook is dry. But not a bad class, no ppt though so attendance is mandatory. Readings are heavy and mandatory to pass. She lectures from notes in her hand and statistics on am overhead.
Very unorganized and speaks very quickly. some of the things she talks about are often tangents that have no relevance to the lecture material and she just stares at one point on the wall for most of it. Also she chooses the most ridiculous points out of the textbook to put on exams which are 3 50 question multiple choice "midters".
The professor was not helpful when asked questions after class. Lectures were not useful and tests were really unfair. She often says statistics will not be included when they really are and multiple choice questions on tests were really difficult. It was really difficult to obtain a good grade even after studying and attending all the lectures.
Very interesting professor and extremely funny! However, she is not helpful at all and her exams are just ridiculous! You need to dedicate al your time to just receive a decent grade! I would not take her if I had the choice
I don't understand the negative feedback. I didn't study excessively and got a 76% and 97% on the exams. She asks some minor details from the textbook but all in all, the exams are fair. She uses an overhead projector and just walks around and talks about the material. After 2 hours, it becomes hard to focus. She is very kind and funny, however.
This is how a Professor ought to teach. She doesn't overlap in-class material with textbook readings. She doesn't simply read the textbook to you as other professors often do. You she is a brilliant professor and truly demonstrates excellence. No other prof holds a candle to how accommodating she is with meeting up with her or deffering an exam
Adie is great. I have taken two of her classes. The text provides good survey information of the topic while her lectures will help you learn to think critically in a sociological way about the main themes. She has also enthusiastically engaged with students who raised issues in class which made lecture interesting. substantial studying is required
Professor Nelson is such a nice lady. I was sick for the first test so she puts whatever test you miss onto the exam..sure why not. But when I wrote the second test I was iffy on my mark so I went to talk to her. She is super nice and helped me a lot with the content of the test. She is more than happy to talk to you in person, will email you asap.
Did not enjoy her teaching style whatsoever. Would not recommend this class. If she is teaching it drop the class and try to take it another term with a different prof. I studied very hard from the textbook, attended the majority of her lectures and still got a bad mark, and usually I don't. Very random questions on exams (and all multiple choice).
Would not recommend taking this class with her to anyone. Tests consist of random questions, things that you would not ever think were important. Most lectures she just told long stories that she thought were useful when really they were boring and a waste of time. She is an intelligent lady, I'll give her that.
One of my favourite lecturers by far. Very interesting and knowledgeable, be ready to take A LOT of notes on top of the notes that she provides if you want to pass her tests. Her tests are very straight-forward and are typically divided evenly between questions for each lecture and each chapter from the textbook.
This prof was hands down one of the best ones I've had in university so far. Her tests are decent ... you just need to study for them. For those complaining saying that her tests are filled with useless statistics... it isn't. Would recommend taking a class with her!
tests are really hard, consist of random questions and useless statistics. 50% textbook based and 50% in lecture based. Probably the worst class i've ever taken at Waterloo.
Nelson's lectures were very interesting as she is very eloquent and almost poetic in the way she speaks. She also made herself very available to help. That being said, it was not an easy course. You have to attend every lecture and read all textbook material. Focus on patterns (i.e x is highest in x provence; males are more likely to commit x, etc)
she doesn't know how to teach or give a lecture. Uses way too many long words and talks in breaks. Takes a 2 second break after each word. She is annoying as hell, please don't take her class
Worst Class Ever!! Her tests are soo Hard. If possible avoid taking this class.
To the people claiming her classes are "hard" - why are you in university? Yeah, she makes you work for your grade, but that's because she makes you LEARN. Go to class and take notes, read and take notes on the textbook every week, and review your class and textbook notes before each midterm. I got over 90%. Toughen up!
Dry af rambles during lectures
Nelson likes to ramble on one topic for long periods of time. She spends 30-40 minutes on one slide, losing everyone's interest. Nelson spoke over the class time frequently, (5-10 minutes) so I would just get up and leave for my next class. Her tests are unfair; the textbook questions are fair but the class based questions are arbitrary and random.
She's very intelligent; however she can't engage her class. She spoke in breaks to the ceiling. She does give good feedback, and answers questions you have or accommodate issues you may be going through. I would only take a class with her if absolutely necessary.
University should be tough - deal with it. People complain about her tests but they are completely above board. 25 questions come from class, 25 from the text book... so go to class and do the readings, simple. Additionally, Adie is very caring and very engaging outside of class if you reach out to her. I took three classes with Adie - she's great.
Her lectures are not powerpoint slides but instead just sheets of paper displayed on a over head. in my opinion the lectures were disorganized and hard to follow, too much content that was not presented properly or in a way that helps students engage in the material
LS 224 is asynchronous and the prof has not taught a single lecture. Everything I have done has been from the textbook or from a powerpoint supplement posted to Learn (no audio just super dense text, sometimes consisting of 80+ slides). She often assigns 1-3 textbook chapters + the PPT. 1st test had random questions from an additional reading. Bad.
