omg sun... sooo f'ing good... !!!111!!!
Runs the mathematics help lab in LGRT110. She's easy to spot as she is probably either holding baked goods or heartily laughing (potentially both). She's also good at math for a girl, or so the professors claim. After spending some time around Adena you'll either have learned something or will be full.
Easy class for me. If you know math you don't need to go to lecture. First time in my life I ever skipped a class - even accidently. You get to use an 8 1/2 by 11 sheet of paper w/ anything on it for exams.
the best
Easiest math class of my life - she explains the tests to you before you ever take them and explains calculus with great ease. She also makes the lamest jokes, but I enjoy them quite a bit.
very good math teacher, explains all of the material very well and is always clear
This class is wicked easy; she teaches what will be on the exam, and then has week long reviews before the exams; explains things very well; one of the best math teachers i have had
She is the easiest math teacher I have ever seen, Helpful and clear
we'll see how the first exam goes, but it's going to be hard! Attendence isn't required, but i suggest going every day.. umm the owls suck but She knows her stuff tho.. which helps.
Eventhough attendence isn't mandatory, go to class if you know you'll have a hard time with calc. level math. The exams are challenging, they count for a lot but she gives you enough time to review, gives you hints and the math reviews are helpful as well. I'm glad i got through it!!! ohh yah.. and the OWLSS SUCCK SO BADDD!!!<3goodluck
i hate math. i hate calculus. i still hate math, but she teaches it reeeeeeeeeeeeeeaally well. if you go to class, she will make you pass the class.
Although I CAN'T STAND calculus, she made things alot easier. She's very helpful, clear, and likes to laugh alot. haha.
Great teacher to have and the problems that she puts on the tests are fair. However it's not fair that other teachers and the department head put questions on the test because those are the ones that we didn't go over in class and were tricky. She is probrably the best teacher you can get for this class.
Calden is by far the best professor who taught math127 this semester. There were kids from other sections skipping their classes to come to hers. OWLs are fairly easy, and she prepares you very well for exams. You don't use the book too often, but she tries assigning practice problems from it to make it worth your money.
first off i dont have strong opinions on teachers but share to help future students: i had rudvalis after first test realized how bad he was and went to her class she is AMAZING and gives lots of sample questions--2 tests and a final, homework helps a LOT, she always seemed there to help ppl with office hours and class usually ended 20 mins early
don't buy the book....waste of money....go to class...
she wants her classes to do well, and she teaches with examples to make sure of that - she doesn't waste time with things that aren't important, and she reviews for exams for at least 3 classes beforehand. you don't need the book at all because everything you need is in class. she's definitely the best professor for the course.
Professor Calden is THE best professor at Umass. TAKE THIS CLASS! Math is not my best subject, but by the end of the class, I enjoyed it and got an A. The midterm and finals arent that bad, just go to class. She will not leave anything out in class that is on the test. I also went for extra help a lot and she is great. Clears up confusions in sec's
Adena was the best thing that ever happened to me...apart from being a total hottie she managed to pull my grade up to an A- after getting a 55 on the first test. I love her and rudavilis can't even touch adena's hot sweaters
Extremely easy. Clear and precise, won't teach any garbage math that you don't need to know. Exams taken straight off her lectures. Lectures not mandatory but if you go, you will be sure of an A and you won't need to read the book.
Great Professor, Class is supposed to be 50 minutes long but 95% of the time we got out in 30 minutes, she goes over the material very clearly and then lets you out of class a.s.a.p.,Reviews for tests using old math 127 tests, she knows how to teach well, I strongly recomend her for math 127
If you hate math, Adena is the best teacher to help you understand. I'm convinced that she can teach calculus to someone without any math background. She is willing to answer any questions and her reviews before the tests are extremely helpful.
Excellent teacher. Explains all concepts very clearly and dismisses the class as soon as she is done what she planned to teach. Definitely the teacher to choose for 127.
She's really nice and helpful!
She's great. I hated calc until I took this class.
Adena is by far the only teacher who can make a student understand math. She has a way of teaching that all other professors should learn! She understands the students, is so helpful, and bottom line amazing. I had her twice and if you go to class and take good notes you will be prepared for the tests.
If you've had calculus before the material is absurdly easy, and even if you haven't, she teaches it well. Two exams and a final that aren't bad at all and you get out of class early basically every class.
Deffinitely who you want for math 127! Explains things very well for people not-so-interested in math. I don't own the textbook for this class and I have never needed it. She is more than willing to stay late after class to help you with any confusion you may have, but her teaching style is so clear, there rarely is any confusion.
Great Teacher. Explaings everything and uses examples that are similar to the exam questions. Class is not mandatory but you should defintely go.
GREAT CLASS, shes funny and teaches you exactly what you need to know for the exams, the exams are 20 multiple choice questions and scales it too, lectures are usually 30 minutes long(which is awesome) and theres reviews before each exam which help a ton
Adena is AMAZING! She is very helpful. I didn't do as well as I wish in the class, but she was VERY clear with the material, and I was able to somewhat recover from the second exam's hole I found myself in. She was definatly the best math prof I've had, TAKE HER CLASS!
Adena was a great teacher. She knows her stuff and is always willing to help out or work something out if you've got a problem. She's very understanding.
i had rudvalis, and got a 25 on the first exam. then a friend that had him with me, told me she skips and goes to Calden's class. so i went to 4 of her classes before the next exam, and got an 85. Thanks Adena!
She gives out really good practice exams.
Adena is the best! You won't have another professor like her. TAKE HER CLASS! She's helpful and crystal clear on teaching. You can't go wrong with her!
SHE IS THE BEST!!!!TEACHES YOU ALL U NEED FOR UR EXAM. DONT NEED TO BUY THE TEXT BOOK, BECAUSE SHE IS SO GOOD AT TEACHING!!!!
Great teacher, you learn a lot and you get out early. If you go to class you will have no problems on the test. Worst part is OWLs, go to lab for help!
She is an awesome teacher. The best math teacher at Umass. Take her class if you need a math class. People would come sit in on our classes from other calc classes because she was so good.
Best way to describe it: I don't think I'd gotten an A in math since my sophomore year of high school. Come in second semester of my freshman year, and all of the sudden I had a 95 on a midterm I thought I was going to bomb. YOU WILL LEARN MATH IN THIS CLASS. Show up, pay attention, and she will show you everything you need to know to do well.
YOU HAVE TO GO TO CLASS!The thing about Adena that is great is she teaches us exactly whats going to be on the exam. She never wastes our time with stuff that isnt. Young & sometimes funny.Do not get Rudvalis and if you do, go to Adena's lectures.Go to class, go to S.I. if you need to. Do the owls. Lets us out 15 min early every day.
Adena Calden is the BEST! Adena is very good at teaching and is extremely nice. She's very funny and likes to make jokes in class. I don't know of anyone that doesn't like her. If you goto class and pay attention then you'll understand the material. No need to buy the book. Also goto the SI sessions...they're a big help...goto KELLY's SI sessions!
Adena is the best teacher I have EVER had! She makes everything so simple and shes funny too. Class is not required but i would highly recommend going because she makes everything so easy to understand. No one ever used the textbook. Just make sure you take good notes and go to class as much as possible. I would love to take another class with her!
If you ever want or need to take calculus, you want to take it with her. THE BEST, by far!
She makes this class so simple. I didn't use the book once because she is so clear about everything. Adena's test class average was always higher than the other prof. with the same test. She is amazing, take this class
Adena was great. She prepared us for the tests and taught ver well. Plus she let us out early every day. Take Adena for Math 127!

Awesome
adena is awesome. she is extremely helpful and teaches calc in the way that you do well on the test. she skips all the boring background before it. if you have a different teacher, come to her class, its WAAAAYYY better
Adena is probably one of the BEST math teachers I have ever had. She is very clear, and prepares you well for the tests. If you need a math credit TAKE THIS CLASS!
Shes amazing! makes math as easy as possible, dont buy the book i never opened it, i suggest going and writing down everything because then theres no way you can mess up, really cares about her students, lots of extra help offered and you get a cheat sheet for every test which is awesome
if you're going to take calc, you need to get Adena. She explains everything perfectly- tests are wicked easy, you get a cheat sheet and she has so much review for her students.
Great teacher and extremely easy math class if you have ever taken a precalc class. prob still easy even if you havent...owls are pretty easy...and DO NOT buy the book, you will never use it and itll be a waste of money. Solid class.
The homework assignments are much harder than the exams. Do NOT need the textbook. Fun teacher and she usually ends class about 20 minutes early. If you have to take calc, take it with her.
ADENA IS THE BEST TEACHER IN THE WORLD!! ive never liked a class so much. She makes everything so clear and easy. The tests are easy you are allowed to have a cheat sheet(formula). If your gonna take 127 take it with her. Shes the sweetest person ever.
Great teacher. I will take her for 131 as well
best math teacher I've ever had, I attenmded a couple different math 127 classes with different professors, Adena was by far the best!!!
I have one word for Adena: Awesome! She was incredibly helpful and very clear. Calc was never my subject, and I got an A- in her class. She reviews for exams with exams from prior semesters. I highly recommend taking this course with Adena Calden. The best Calc professor at UMass by far. Do NOT take this course with ANY other professor!!
If you're going to take calc you need to get Adena. I actually was in a different professor's class but I only went to her classes because she was such a good teacher. She's so down to earth and makes sure everyone understands everything. Let's you out of class really early too.
i hated this class but you really should go to do well.... its pretty confusing.... just a bunch of problems and i found it completely necessary to go to the SI sessions everyweek to find out what was actually happening in class. i knew the info perfectly and could do all practice tests fine but the test were different and they sucked
By far the absolute BEST calc professor. Take this class with her. She does plenty of examples so you understand everything. Tests are generally easy, just do the OWLS and the practice exams.
The class is pretty straight forward, I am in a hybrid course so half is online, have to remember all the online homework and you need to be in class for PRS but aside from that the material is easy and she does a great job at explaining and offering examples. Hybrid class is nice because online helps with review (esp. for exams).
I hated math in high school, so much. Adena made it easy to learn, follow in class, and earn points. I got 95s on my first two exams. Homework is easy to do, and gives easy points (with no deductions for wrong answers.) PRS in class, but the material is very easy to grasp, lots of help available if needed. Don't take Calc127 with anyone else.
Easy class, good professor. Homework is online and you have unlimited attempts at questions. PRS in class. 2 midterms and a final. Final was WAY harder than the midterms. Not sure what happened there, but no one got their grades on it, just final grades. If you have had Calculus before it's pretty much review and an easy A.
She was very entertaining and the class wasn't too difficult. Lots of homework, but it counted for a good amount of your grade. No quizzes, only 3 tests including the final. She was really helpful and fun!
Very good class and quite easy.
She is amazing, if you have to take math 127 then it is essential that you take it with Adena, she IS the best professor/teacher you will ever get in a math course.
Adena is a very good teacher. She explained all of the material very well. As for the class, the material isn't that difficult, a very watered down version of calculus. The first two exams however were pretty tough. The final was not too bad though. Just work hard on and finish all the hw and you should get a good grade.
By far the best professor I have ever had. She's young, funny, really likes teaching. If you go to class you will do well. Going to class is worth it bc she explains things really well, and she let's you use cheat sheets on the exams.
Fantastic teacher. The material isn't really that difficult if you've taken calc in high school. She's very friendly, funny, and helpful. I suggest taking her hybrid calc class because she's great!
Adena is the best math teacher I've ever had. I'm in the business school, never took calc in high school, and had to take math127 in order to be in isenberg. she's so clear, she knows the material, and she teaches it perfectly. i have an "A" in the course, and again had no prior experience. she's the best out of all the math professors.
She is a fabulous teacher, shes straight forward and to the point. As long as you go to class and do the homework you'll be fine.
excellent teacher. speaks english. explains things thoroughly and wants to help kids out. grades easy, and if you need more time on homework just ask her, shell extend deadlines
I never went/or even studied, but just doing the owls is pretty much good enough. But when i did go a great teacher, very clear, good at explaining things. I wish she taught 128, I would have actually done very good in that if she was the teacher.
Adena was a great teacher, explains things well and as long as you got to class and do the homework/online quizzes you will be fine. Tests aren't too bad
Love this professor:)
Very nice prof and easy class
Really nice lady. Teaches to easy however. Her questions on the tests are easy, but it is difficult to do the other professors questions since they teach more intensely then she does. Very helpful though, and really wants her students to succeed.
She is an awesome teacher and makes things very clear. She covers material very thoroughly and knows what she is talking about. She is also very friendly and helpful. I would recommend taking her class.
Adena is the best! I had Thurlow Cook originially but word got to me that Adena was a great teacher, and its true. Her class is fast paced but understandable, she lays out everything clearly and with usable examples, even if you cant get in her class make sure you have that spot open so you can ditch your other prof and go to hers!
Awesome professor, so nice and understanging. Never uses the book so don't buy it
Great professor tests are easy. Homework, thank god she gives unlimited tries because it is the most difficult hw and I even took calc in hs and got A's. I dont know why but the homework is just so difficult but you get unlimited tries so it doesnt really matter just takes a while
Great professor!! I would highly recommend her. I somehow got placed in math127 when I had never even taken pre-cal, and I still managed to do well. She is a great teacher, the exams are fair, and you get unlimited chances on the homework. The only down side would be that she teaches at an extremely fast pace, but that might just be me.
so nice. gives great examples. Easy class if you've ever taken calc before if not its still confusing. Do the review packets before tests. HW is an automatic 100 if you get it done which is 20 percent of the grade. class is scaled so an 85 is an A. Cheat sheets for tests. OH and you only have to go to class once a week other day is online!!
Adena is the best. She scales your final grade by 10 points so thats awesome. Exams are all multiple choice, and homework is an automatic 100 because you get unlimited chances. She teaches really well, and gives clear examples. I learned way more in her class than I did in calc in high school. Great Professor!!
Incredibly talented at taking dry, tedious math and making it easy to understand. Do not miss class once because the material covered in one day is astronomical. Very fair grader. Exams are 20 questions, so go through every practice exam to make sure you know each type of question. Exams are exactly what you learned in class.
Awesome Professor!!! Enough said! :)
Great teacher, understands that not everyone likes math and teaches you what you need to know and leaves anything useless out of lectures. Various examples of how to approach problems make it easier to learn rather than preaching about the history of the mathematical reasoning and abstract examples..take this class if it doesn't fill up right away!
Great prof. Best for 127. She writes the exams, so you will get more from her than you will from other teachers. She is very fair and clear. Pay attention in class and she feeds you the questions on exams. You only need an 85 for an A. About as easy of an A as it gets.
Easiest professor for 127. The class is an absolute breeze if you have prior calculus experience. My high school calculus teacher was more difficult than Adena.
Adena is the nicest lady and she couldn't be more clear during class. Rolling homeworks that you have the option of completing months in advance. Three exams, all of which you get to make a cheat for and all of which are multiple choice. easiest class/professor.
BEST CLASS EVER! adenas awesome. Highly recommended for Math127
Calden is the best for 127 and 128. She explains things really well and is actually interested in what you say and how well you do. Go to office hours! She is more than happy to have the company and explains things differently than she did in class to give you another perspective.
Adena is the best. She teaches some classes online so you don't need to go to class those days. Homework is through Wileyplus which is easy and helpful. She is a great professor and very funny.
Adena is a great professor. She is very clear and easy to understand. I'd definitely recommend taking 127 with her.
127 is a manageable class. Adena is a great professor and she really wants you to succeed. She's always in a great mood and she's very nice. She and the TAs are always available for help. Class goes a little slow if you've taken Calculus before. Exams are a little tough and they don't allow a cheat sheet any more, but they're still manageable.
Great teacher always upbeat. Doesn't really show examples that will be on the exam. Exams were hard, but she doesn't write them herself, the whole dept. does. HW very doable
GREAT TEACHER! If she wrote the exams, you would probably get an easy A because she teaches math so well, and her class is very fluid. The real problem is out of her control and that is the exam content since the math department makes the questions, and they ALWAYS turn out to be demented versions of class examples.
Take writing in math with Calden if you can! The class will not stress you out, but at the same time isn't a total joke... You actually learn useful things (e.g. Latex). The more pedantic assignments are fun, and doing them in latex makes it educational.
Adena is probably the best teacher I have ever had. She made calculus so enjoyable. DEFINITELY take math 127 with her.
She explains very well and makes sure everyone understands before she moves on. Calculus is confusing but she makes it a lot less confusing. Take her !!
Adena is by far the best prof I've had at UMass. She is not only and excellent teacher, but also a great resource. If you're confused at all, office hours with her will clear all confusion up. Her teaching makes exams seem so much easier than they would without here. Take 128 and 127 with her!!!
Adena is the best math teacher there is. She knows how to explain calc so it makes sense. the second exam is always harder than the first exam, but the final is very easy. homework is basically another exam grade so thats an easy A since you get unlimited tries until you get the problem right
Adena was an excellent teacher! Went through material step by step and welcomed questions. Lots of review packets. Cons: she doesn't make any of the exams and often doesn't know what will be on them, so expect some surprises! Much better than Prof. Cook though for sure!!
Totally awesome! Best math professor for 127/128. Had her for the latter, a huge improvement over my last professor. Do everything you can to ensure you take her class and not Cook's!!
Adena was awesome! I got a better grade in 128 than in 127 because she was the teacher. Super clear and nice. She gets students don't like math so she tries to make it as fun as possible. She always reviewed before tests and gave us what she thought the format would be. Def recommend.
Adena is the best calc teacher I've ever had! She made the material very comprehendible and she prepares you directly for exams. She wants you to learn and understand the material and she does a really good job of explaining. The TAs are useless. Take Calc 127 with her. I heard the other teachers for this section are terrible.
Best math teacher ever. My class is a hybrid (half online and half in class...which I wouldn't recommend) but she is awesome. She explains ideas so clearly, so I really don't need to study all that much outside of class in addition to the assigned homework. She makes note sheets you can print out and bring to class. Absolutely recommend.
She is an amazing person and a great teacher, but the tests (although they are take-home) are CRAZY difficult. You have to be really good at explaining things to get full credit on the test, but she does give a lot of partial credit which comes in handy. She's definitely the nicest person I've ever met and the class is super interesting.
Adena is awesome. I was dreading taking calculus but she's a very good teacher. I got an A but I also worked very hard. Go to every single class, take advantage of the SI sessions, and go to the math help center. You will do good if you want to do good. If you have take calculus take it with Adena!
Well, she is one of the nicest professors on campus…so there's that. She gives easy examples of problems in class and on homework then BAM! Good luck on the tests guys, cause they'll kill you. Test questions are all really theoretical and nothing like what you learn in class. She grades homework based on two questions chosen at random :P
CANNOT TEACH. Nicest lady ever, but she is just not clear at all when she is teaching the material in class. The TA's know what they're doing
Don't get me wrong Adena is a great lady and everything but she is not even the slightest bit clear. I learned from SI sessions (so be sure to take advantage of those), and also her handouts. Her posts and handouts are great and useful but her teaching is horrible. Had plenty of Ta's better at teaching than her. But again, great lady.
Math is not the best subject for me but Adena made it interesting and clear. She is really good at teaching and I am taking Math 128 with her next semester.
Adena is a great professor! She explains material clearly and her tests are straightforward. Easy A if you put in the effort to practice the math problems/attend class. I highly recommend taking Calc with her!
She is very good about moving through the material at a pace that you can understand. She offers many out of class opportunity for help and will always answer questions in class. Two tests and one final is consistent with the course. No extra credit and online homework problems.
Adena is an incredibly nice and open-minded woman; she is always willing to help you out. Unfortunately, unless you're ridiculously awesome at calc, this class is extremely difficult (the take home exams are killer). You really need to try in this class to pass.
I loved Adena! She is one of the nicest professors Ive ever had. Her 127H class requires a lot of work, and although tests are all take home, they are very hard and take a very long time. However, classes are fun, and she clearly cares for all her students and is very helpful in office hours. If you have to take math, take Adena!!
Adena is an awesome teacher!! She is so nice and is always willing to help. She provides a lot of chances for help and I wish I took her up on more because I would've gotten an A instead of a B. Overall if you listen to all her lectures you should do very well in her class.
Calden puts in great effort making sure her students understand the material. She moves through the lessons at a manageable rate. I always felt prepared for exams. Three exams and weekly WileyPlus homework problems.
Adena is a great professor for someone who isn't a strong math student. She moves at a very managable pace and provides guided notes to print fromMoodle which are incredibly helpful to stay organized and keep up in class. The exams aren't easy, but they're do-able.
Adena is an excellent math teacher for calculus. I had her for calc 2 online and she is always there to help over email, online, anywhere. Great notes and lectures that are easy to understand and she is great at getting back to you quickly if you have a question about anything. Overall a great prof.
She is a great person and a great professor. I am just not a math person in the slightest sense, so that is why this class was so tough for me. Otherwise, I think she's great!
This was a good class to takes as honors, even if you aren't as strong in math, because it is a smaller environment. Adena is really friendly and has realistic expectations of her students. The exams are take home, but can be long and difficult. Overall I would say she is very fair and available to help you in any way!
Adena is a really nice teacher and explains a lot of things clearly. However, there are somethings that make no sense at all and you have to depend on Khan Academy and Wolfram Alpa to get you through the assignment. There are also so many things that she just skips over and assumes that we've learned.
Adena posts guided notes for all the lectures which is helpful. She also offers videos if you miss class. She has extra office hours near exams and is nice.
I took calc my high school senior year so I had a good background, but Calden is an amazing teacher. She teaches different ways to solve a problem and she's always there to answer questions. The homework was very easy, and in the off chance you need help, go to the TA hours and you'll get the answers. I never liked math, but this class was great!
Everyone suggested that I take Math 127 with her but this semester (fall 2014) she had a hybrid class (half online, half in person) and instead of a second lecture we had group work (which didn't count towards our final grade at all). She's a good professor but if you struggle with math like I do, do NOT take the hybrid course. Help Cntr your BFF
Nicest lady ever. Her teaching style is great and she offers so many resources for students to excel. That being said, it is not a guaranteed A; there is a lot of homework for practice, the second exam and final are challenging, and the later material is complicated if you have never taken calculus. If you need this class, take it with her!
I took this class online and Prof. Calden definitely was great. She posted her own lecture videos for each section, created a discussion board so students could interact with one another, and even gave some extra credit. An online class is alot of work but Calden is fair and gives good feedback. The pace is fast, but manageable.
Calden is very helpful in lecture and out of lecture. She explains things very clearly and is always willing to help whenever possible. She also practically gives you the exams through very similar practice problems. Do the homework, show up to lecture, and you should be good to go. Pretty easy A.
Was a really nice and helpful professor. I took honors, so the tests were take-home but almost impossible and so challenging. Otherwise, there was easy homework every week and she gave a lot of students opportunities for extra credit. 3 major group projects, which she can be tough on grading, but very easy. Definitely recommend this course.
I had Adena for Calc 127 last semester. I am not really a math person at all but Adena made the material so clear and easy to understand. I would definitely take another class with Adena. As long as you put in the effort, you should do well in this class.
Adena is still my favorite teaching after having her for Calc 131. The Math Writing course is pretty standard: you have some sort of assignment due for each class. It seems like a lot of work, but it's super easy. And if you do it, and it looks decent, you will get full credit. I was scared of Junior Year Writing, but this class is awesome!
Adena was by far my favorite professor this semester. I have never been a big math person, but with her as a teacher i ended up getting an A on every single test, and there's no reason not to get an A for homework, since you pretty much have unlimited tries. I recommend lectures but they're not mandatory which is nice.
Adena is the reason why I have not failed Calc I! Extremely clear lectures (and she is funny and has a great personality!). Online homework assignments can really boost your grade and give you ways to practice for the tough exams made by the math department. Many opportunities to get extra help (TAs, SI sessions, practice problems) and office hours
I just didn't understand this class. Certainly came out of it knowing no more math than when I went in. Seriously, I did not learn anything. Class is entirely group projects, no tests. She gives you videos to watch but does not teach a single thing in class--- class time is devoted 100% to group project work and quizzes. She is a nice person though
Professor Calden was my best professor this semester. She is extremely clear with explaining the material. Especially after hearing about how hard this course was from my roommate last year I can't say enough about how easy professor Calden makes it to do well in this class.
Adena is an amazing professor. She is very clear and it is obvious that she really cares about her students - she teaches as though you have no background to math to ensure that everyone understands the material. I would absolutely take one of her math classes again.
Adena goes slow enough to make sure that everyone is following. Although it is a large lecture, she alway makes it a point to make it clear to her students that there is help there if you need it. Also, the review sessions before every exam guarantee a way to study. If you do your homework and do the test reviews, you should get an A.
Professor Calden always did everything she could to be clear in her lectures and make sure the students understood what she was teaching. Her guided notes really help & she even responds quickly to emails asking for her help. Definitely choose Calden if you need Math 127!
I wish there was more problems on your test to even out the chance and risk of mistakes.
She is honestly one of the best teachers I have gotten.
Adena is an outstanding professor who is truly engaging and makes the math easy to understand. She explains things slowly and offers multiple examples of what you might see on the homework or tests. Tests are hard, but if you study hard enough, you can get a good grade. She is helpful during office hours and she is an overall amazing person.
If you have to take this class, make sure you get Adena. It's a tough subject, but Adena is truly gifted as a teacher. She is clear, moves along at a slow pace and is a really nice person overall. Make sure you touch-up on algebra before taking this class... the first exam can trip you up if you're not careful, and it's hard to recover.
She is not a bad professor, however the final exam was extremely difficult. I went to three review sessions and did multiple review packets and still had trouble with the final. Good luck
Adena is the best Math 127 teacher you get at the school. The first test was very easy, but the second one and the final were very hard. Attendance is not mandatory but her lectures explain the material extremely well so it is a good idea to go.
Adena is an amazing teacher, definitely try to get her as a professor for Math 127. It is a hard class in general, but the way she teaches makes it much more understandable. She puts guided notes on moodle to use for each class.
Adena is hilarious and the mood of the class was great. She realizes that math isn't for everyone and tries to make it as clear as possible. The homework isn't awful if you've been going to class because she really does cover and explain everything you'll see on the homework and tests.
Adena is one of the nicest people ever! She's really sweet and honestly the best 127 professor by far. She has note packets that you can print out and fill in to make your life easier and is better explaining concepts than other profs. If you got As in math throughout HS like me, this class will be easy for you.
Adena was very open to questions during lecture, and made it a point to have time during class dedicated to walking around with the TAs answering questions about practice problems she assigned. So long as you go to lecture and do the homework, an A is more than reasonable.
Professor Calden is an extremely caring professor who seems like she cares about her many students. She has very helpful lectures and seems intelligent in her subject matter. Calculus is not a very fun class but she has made it bearable. Watch out for the second exam, the class average was a 64.
Adena was great! She's has clear and concise notes and gives a lot of examples of the different problems you can encounter. She makes learning math really fun and really understandable.
Her exams are way too hard. She gives you practice exams and then makes the exam totally different. Told my class that her exam average was a 60.
As someone who struggled in high school and college calculus, Adena made it much easier. She is truly a great teacher and ensures that her students understand the material. That being said, unless you're very talented at math, I wouldn't recommend skipping class. The second test is very hard, and as there are only three tests it carries weight.
Adena was always a joy to see. She is great at clearly explaining concepts and does examples with the class. I had taken calculus in high school and she helped me get a deeper understanding of it. Make sure you do all the practice tests she posts, it will help you for the tests! First test is fairly easy, second is hard, final isn't too bad.
She is super friendly and pretty clear in class. If you took calc in high school its a cake walk, if you only took through pre calc (like myself) its still pretty easy. Didn't show up to class at all after the first two weeks and still found the hw material and tests pretty easy.
Adena knows her stuff, and is one of the most well informed professors I've seen. She cares about everyone, and makes the material seem easy, and right when it's all going well, BAM, the exam happens. There is lots of homework, but it is not nearly enough to master the material. The exams are incredibly hard, but the HW grades can keep you alive.
Good class, somewhat challenging. Only two exams so do well on them
As a teacher, she's very good at explaining different concepts and does plenty of examples so you can make sure you understand the problem. As a person, she's extremely kind and doesn't get annoyed if you don't get something. When it comes to homework, keep track of the due dates. She gives you 8 attempts for every problem so it's hard to fail hw.
She posts her outlines to what she goes over in class online which is helpful but not everything on tests and hw is gone over in lectures. Every other class you spend the class working on problems which isn't always helpful.
She conveyed the information well and gave multiple examples of each type of problem, making tests easy and very predictable. Lots of homework on WileyPlus but she is very flexible about late work.
Really nice and loves to help students.
Adena was a decent lecturer but the class was terrible. The homework were nothing like the classwork or the tests, the classwork was nothing like the tests or the homework, and the tests were way harder than what they should be. I took Calc BC in highchool so I had a huge advantage. If the tests were as easy as the practice ones, it would be good.
Her final exam study guides have no answer keys. You're left guessing on a majority of them unless you sell your soul to the devil for the answers.
She's brilliant at explaining the material. I've taken calculus before (which is why I found the class to be easy), but I used to struggle conceptually. This class really helped me understand what I didn't before. In my opinion, the homework wasn't too much. Do all the practise exams to study, and an A should be very doable.
Adena is honestly the best math professor I've ever had. Learned more in her class than I ever did in AP Calc. Her exams are straightforward and she assigns homework through Wiley. Her teaching style is very easy to understand and she's always up to answer students' questions.
Adena is a great professor who covers the material clearly. Exams are take home (for the honors section) and are some of the hardest exams I have taken to this point. However she is a super fair grader and wants everyone to do well, she grades easily and finds extra credit. There are also 3 group projects but she grades you based off contribution
Adena is a great professor and a great person. She really cares about all of her students and makes it clear that she is there to help you succeed. While calc itself is hard it would have been far worse if I had a different instructor. If you have to take calc, take it with her.
I once said Math teachers have no personality, but Adena proves otherwise. She doesn't have that boring math teacher voice that puts you to sleep. It's a tough course but she makes it easy to glide through. Kind of a lot of homework, but it's math so what else do you get graded on?
Graded on online homework and a couple exams. She is a GREAT teacher but if you need extra help you have to see the TAs outside of class, which has proven difficult for me because my classes are in the afternoon during their extra help. Tests are pretty hard, but Calden will stop lectures to make sure everyone understands the material. Good class.
Adena was the best math teacher that I've had to date. Her honors class seems like a huge challenge and it really is. The exams are take-home which sounds great, but they are pretty challenging. She gives numerous opportunities though to get extra credit. I got a 47/100 on the first exam and it eventually was upped to a 99.5 after extra credit.
Adena is incredibly nice, and truly just wishes the best for her students, both in the classroom and beyond, and she really makes this known. She is always accessible whether after class or in office hours, and does an incredible job of positioning the material in a manner that is easily digestible,& will take the time to make sure you understand
A great lecturer. Learned more from her lectures than most math lectures. However, I found that self-studying with the texture was significantly more effective than the lectures, though this is no criticism of Adena. She is more than accessible when you need additional help, but assuming you self-study with the book and do the hw, you will be fine.
She really enjoys giving group work assignments. This course only had 6 projects, but covered more than what is expected of a normal calc 128 class. She is very fair about everything happening in class. Extra credit if you all ask really nicely
adena is so sweet and funny and makes sure everyone understands the material before moving on. Wiley the homework platform sucks but she's trying to get rid of it. a hard class if you've never taken calculus but a lot of help available
Adena was one of the best teachers I had at UMass. She taught the material well, and also made sure that your grade reflects your effort. Most importantly, she cared about her students as people, instead of just grades.
Great teacher who is kind, sharp and caring. Show up to class and you'll do great.
I don't get the point of a class where the homework is nothing like the classwork and the classwork is nothing like the tests and the tests are nothing like the homework. It just comes around in full circle where nothing in this class correlates with each other. But Adena is a very nice and knew what she was doing but seriously fix this mess
If you didn't take AP calc in high school, good luck. You take three tests worth 80% of your grade, and the homework very rarely translates to the tests. I put more effort into this class than any other and still did poorly. Calden is a nice person, but, in my opinion, does a poor job of explaining the concepts.
If you have little to no background in calculus, please hold off on math 127. This course is made for those who have a decent background, even if she doesn't say it is. The lectures are very simple, but the tests are difficult for kids weak in math. She is great at getting concepts across, but she does not cover what is needed for tests and HW.
Grade was based off homework and 3 exams. About 2-3 online homework assignments a week. Curriculum was relatively easy. Really easy if you've taken AP Calculus in high school. Went to 2 classes the whole semester and passed with an A.
Calden is a great teacher. She provides a lot of examples in class and presents topics clearly. The tests can be tricky, but if you go to class and do the reviews it gives you an idea what to expect. Wiley is the worst, so definitely go to the tutoring center if you have trouble with the wileys.
Adena's class is great! Her recorded lectures are really interesting and they make the concepts so much easier to understand. You are quizzed on every chapter and the questions are pretty hard. The final was a breeze, only covered basics. Participation counts like no other. I strongly recommend doing the practice problems in Wiley, very helpful.
I took this class last summer. Calden is the best math Professor I have ever had. She is very methodological at teaching and knows how to make things memorable for her students. Take it and you will love it.
This class has been a breath of fresh air since all my classes are online. The lectures are really easy to comprehend and, the mini quizzes help boost your grade. No final, so there is less stress at the end of the semester!
I took this class online so it may be a little different than in person. She does a great job of explanations but I had to watch a bunch of youtube videos and did not completely love this.
I failed calc in high school. Adena speaks like she's explaining to kindergartners, explains every topic in depth and the material is straightforward. Extremely easy to understand and get a good grade, just listen to the lectures and attend office hours if you're confused
Whoever is saying Adena isn't a good teacher or the class is hard probably just did not do their homework or watch the videos. The lectures are very well put together and you will easily get an A- (or better) if you simply do the work she asks you to do. If you get a 77% she will give you a B. If that doesn't sum it up then I don't know what will.
Professor Caden is one of the best professors I have ever have. Her class was the only class I did not mind putting in the work for. You have no cumulative tests which itself is a blessing. I got super sick and was in the hospital and she gave me extensions on everything and let me pick when to make up work. She explains everything so throughly.
Adena is amazing, take her class! Her lectures are awesome and so easy to follow. She really wants her students to do well and is very lenient with giving extensions and helping in any way she can. This class is an easy A and was way easier than pre calc!
Adena has recorded lectures that you have to watch to understand the material, especially if you do not love math. She does explain everything in really good detail and although it was asynchronous there were office hours with TAs everyday with flexible hours.
Adena has been a great professor. The only downside is the Wileyplus interface, which isnt the best for homework imo. She's very understanding and gives plenty of time throughout the week to get help. Miniquizzes due everyweek and weekly 10 question exams. Only watched a few lectures because knew the material already.
Adena definitely cares about her students and their success. It is very lecture heavy, I would often be overwhelmed by the amount of videos posted, but they are not mandatory. Participation does matter in this class but there are many ways to get these points. I usually thought mini quizzes were difficult but it didn't affect my grade too much.
Adena is definitely one of the kindest professors at UMass. The mini-quizzes can be difficult but other than that she gives a lot of opportunities to do well in the class and is always open to extensions and meeting with you one on one. The only thing is she won't round up your grade but that is the math department policy I guess!
Mini quiz (3q) & homework (20q) every wk, 5 ch. exams & required participation throughout semester by joining study group/SI Session/or posting commentary on Moodle. Relatively easy going course which has been prerecorded w/ helpful notes/ex. to help better understand concepts. Only stressing factor is the amount of videos we must watch at times.
Do everything, I don't understand how she grades, even if you do well in homework you gonna end in B . I would prefer other professor for calculus if I take it again
One of the best math teachers Ive had. Amazing guided notes for every lecture and will answer questions without making you feel dumb. Not too much homework and two mini quizzes per week with 2 attempts each. Overall amazing and kind
I would say that Adena is alright, but its not an amazing class. I think I went to 2 in person lectures and then have been doing the rest asynchronously on my own time since. There's about 2 HW assignments a week, a 3 question quiz twice a week, exams are 10 questions and online. I took Calc in high school and have been doing fine, easy a
Adena was excellent at explaining concepts but her lecture examples were insanely basic and easy. The mini quizzes and chapter quizzes were very hard and often looked completely different than any of the classwork/hw. While I know this is a critical thinking class, a timed test doesn't seem like the best place to introduce a new type of problem.
Great professor, super sweet. Lectures are straightforward and easy to understand. Lots of weekly homework assignments, weekly quizzes, and chapter quizzes, but they only take like 30 minutes maximum to finish. Easy A as long as you do the work.
A lot of homework, although a good lecturer and professor in general, her tests and quizzes sometimes don't match what we learned in class and were sometimes harder than the homework she gives us. The average amount of homework is 3 pages with 10 questions each (online textbook) with 2 quizzes a week. It would help to go over the fundamentals.
I never went to class because their were lecture videos. She would send out the kindest emails and always made herself available to students.
Sweetest teacher ever. I took Calc in highschool so this was the easiest class I took this semester. She teaches things so well and there are usually 2 homework assignments per week but none of it is hard. There is also two mini quizzes per week which you eventually are able to take twice. Not a hard class and a great teacher.
Grade is based on homework and unit tests, all online and class attendance is optional. If you took AP calc in high school, this class is easy.
Very kind and offers so many resources to help you succeed
She was remote this semester, but she posted all lectures on Moodle. There are mini quizzes and homework assignments every week. You'll pass if you put in effort, the chapter tests were pretty hard but they are open note.
I was very scared to take this class because I did not do well in Math 127. I found it easier than 127 because she did a great job explaining the material and gave us a doable amount of work. Questions were always answered well and quickly through the discussion board. I would definitely recommend taking this class with her!
Professor Calden is great. Her lectures are very detailed, and her TAs have drop-in hours for extra help basically all day. Her quizzes and tests directly reflect the material covered in lecture, and are very straightforward. She also offers one extra credit assignment at the end of the course. If you took calc in high school it's a breeze!
very nice, explained concepts very well, i have always struggled with Math and i really understood this class. lectures were posted to BlackBoard to watch it was ten over the Winter Session. Final was easy but no final during Fall/Spring semesters. Mini Quizzes and Chapter Quizzes are easy. WileyPlus for hw is straightforward
expected us to learn a whole section in one day and take a quiz the next. quizzes were only 3 questions so if you got one wrong, you already have a 67% overall. quizzes, tests and homework on wileyplus were nothing like the questions in lectures. only extra credit was the final but other than that she gives you no chance to boost your grade.
The class was okay. At times, the mini quizzes contained material that was definitely not covered in the lectures. Some questions were so hard and random and since there were only three questions there was a lot of pressure to get them all right. The chapter quizzes weren't that bad and the review packets were helpful
I had Adena for 127 and 128. Both courses showed how well Adena has adapted to online learning. She gives out notes for you to fill in while she lectures, provides several videos she's made to go over the topics in more depth, and provides optional extra worksheets for every unit that were entirely optional but so helpful. A saint.
Love her! She teaches very well, shows lots of examples, and connects to real-life situations. Sometimes her quizzes can be a little hard but usually they are pretty easy. She has lots of resources to help explain the units more. Lot of homework and weekly quizzes but are not bad, just don't do them last minute! Overall good class.
Taking this class online really saved me. I only attended the first class in person. Watching the lectures and filling in the notes is helpful if you actually pay attention. Otherwise the homework and quizzes will be a bit difficult. If you complete the homework which is pretty generous with attempts before doing the quizzes you should be fine.
Lectures posted as short videos (summer course). Exams+final are multiple choice. Homework is important. Participation is easy (a few forum posts). Adena & TAs are really accessible outside of class for extra help. Extra credit at the end. As someone who struggles w math I found this class doable - but not easy. Put in the work & you'll be okay.
Adena is very helpful, i recommend taking any class she gives. Her TAs are always awesome.
I took this class over the summer. Was a bit difficult but was worth it. I already took her 127 class and had to take 128 with her. I totally recommend her!!
This was a class I struggled in at the beginning of the semester, but eventually got better at it as the semester went on. Which how many things that were graded I got my D+ all the way up to a B at the end of the semester and the final was optional to make your grade even higher than it was before. She really cares about her students.
I had her lectures for MATH127. Her lectures are easy to follow. She doesn't rush from one topic to another, and she really takes time to make everything clear.
I loved Calden. I took this class online and it was one of the easiest classes I've ever taken. I did take AP calc which contributed to how easy it was, but she just really knew how to teach an online class. She gave a lot of lecture material and the discussions were great to help understand material. Overall, super easy but learned a lot.
Overall great class, but we have assignments due every time we see her, which typically amounts to 2 hours homework from one day to the next. It just becomes a hassle especially when in class we just talk about random math topics, and then the students are expected to do all the work outside of class. Unclear grading criteria too
I cannot recommend her enough. Math, and especially calculus, are my weakest classes, but she breaks down difficult concepts & makes the material very approachable. What puts her above and beyond, is how much she cares for her students. I had a very difficult semester, and she couldn't have been more understanding, working with me 1-on-1.
Adena is great. Started class with calm scenarios or thoughts that honestly made my day. Class can be taken in person or asynchronously. Both options are really useful. Grade is a true representation of your understanding of the material. No textbook but you need to purchase WileyPLUS for this class to do homework (there's a discount code).
Excellent instructor for this writing course. Normally I do not enjoy writing, but in her class you are given freedom to write about things you are passionate about. There was a solid amount of work, however, that can be expected for any advanced writing course. I also got to work with a diverse set of really good people which I enjoyed.
She's a good professor and really nice. You can basically complete this class completely virtually.
Adena is the best, she is very caring and lenient. You'll definitely have to do a lot of writing the grading is very generous and should be an easy A
HIGHLY RCM
Highly recommend this class for people who have struggled with math in the past. Her lectures are very clear and she also posts them online.
HIGHLY RECOMMEND ADENA!
I loved Adena as a professor. All the lectures were available online broken in segments (made it easier to get through). Everything was explained in detail and had plenty of examples. Tests were online (with an optional final) and we were allowed our notes.
Sweetest professor ever! You do not have to go to every class, but the textbook is MANDATORY. It is an online textbook where you do all of your assignments on. Adena actually cares about her students and is very approachable. TA hours are 100% worth the time, as they are all super sweet and patient.
Lots of mini-quizzes throughout the week (3 questions). Don't forget a few as your grade drops due to it (ex. mine). Exams, quizzes, and hw are all online! An optional online final was given which replaced the lowest exam score! Easy to get a good grade as long as everything is done! Extensions won't be granted if you forget a date.
The setup for this class is non-required lectures, then homework assignments and weekly quizzes graded on correctness. If you are taking Calc127 this class is VERY easy. I had an 8:30 for this class, I went twice all year and then watched the online version and ended with an A.
Love her, great professor
I followed this class online asynchronously. She had videos made specifically for this which were way more concise and this was better for me since the contents for a review for me from high school. She was very nice and caring. She communicated really well over email about reminders about tests. The grades were based on hw, quizzes and topic tests
I didn't attend lectures the entire semester since everything is online. She posts all her lectures and the homework, quizzes, and exams are online so I used Chegg for everything. If you don't have Chegg though she explains things super clearly in the videos. If you actually did all the homework it would probably take a lot of time though.
I have noticed that she only teaches 70% of the actual material in the mini quizzes and exams. There were a times in the semester when I did a mini quiz, and at least one question was on a topic we would learn the next week, so I got points off that since we never learned it. She also gives 3 minutes per practice problem, which is not enough time.
There are at least two 3 question mini quizzes (2 tries) every week based on material covered in class. There are 5 chapter quizzes (1 try) that are 10 questions long and an optional final (10 questions). EVERYTHING is online- lecture videos, quizzes, and tests. There is also homework to be done on WileyPlus. I think its $50 using code.
The class was graded on mini quizzes, two per week (25% of your final grade), weekly homework assignments (25% of your final grade), and five chapter tests (50% of your final grade). Overall, she explained every concept very well and would have examples that demonstrated the concepts in use. Great professor who knows how to teach the material.
Can choose between a(synchronous) and lectures are extremely well organized w/ guided notes. There's a mini quiz and homework assignment corresponding to each lecture, as well as 5 chapter tests throughout the sem. Final is an optional chapter quiz. Need to purchase access to hw on Wileyplus. Do NOT skip a class cause math is cumulative.
Enrolled in her class based off of her reviews and wasn't impressed in the slightest. No echo 360, assessments don't reflect lecture material, one attempt on graded canvas quizzes, only 5 attempts on hw problems. Paying $2000 for a class and not being able to rewatch lectures is absolutely crazy. Also the final is NOT optional anymore (fall 2024)
Professor Calden's MATH127 is well-structured with weekly mini-quizzes and homework on Wileyplus. While attendance is mandatory, everything is available online, so you can still succeed even if you miss some classes. Unstuckstudy AI and ChatGPT were super helpful for study prep.
Nice teacher. Lot's of the other review's on her admire her simply because the whole class was online up until this semester. In-person final this time around. Doesn't post recordings now, ridiculous. Homework scheduling makes it feel like we're backed up in the class when we're not. Homework and quiz due on the first day of finals. Extra stress...
She teaches really well and makes all the concepts easy to understand. Weekly mini-quizzes and homework. There is a chapter quiz after each chapter finishes and they account for 40% of the grade so doing them good helps u get a good grade for the course. Best teacher for MATH 127
Very broad in teaching, expects all students to know formulas that are not shown in class, and expects you to answer just like her on the board even if you get the same answer. Doesn't re-teach any material that people get and the test averages are low, especially for a take-home exam. She expects you to be a genius already, it's her job!
Good teacher in general. All the quizzes are online. No midterm. Homework is reasonable. Adena is the best person to take Calc with
She's a nice teacher, but her class does not reflect on her reviews. Class is mostly online with 2 mini quizzes a week (3 q) and 2 HW a week, so one quiz and HW per lecture. There's 5 chap. quizzes (10 q each) that are online. Mini quizzes have material that she hasn't covered in class yet. Final exam is now in person and not optional.
I would say I really enjoyed this class but beware the other reviews…they completely switched the curriculum this year. The classes were attendance optional but she doesn't even post the lectures so you can't really miss a class if you want to do ur homework. The final is NOT optional and the formula sheet looks like it's gonna be no help.
Prof Calden is certainly the best professor I've had at UMass, and one of the best teachers I've had throughout my education. Her class can be tough but she is always there to help if you have the initiative to stay after class or go to office hours. She once got me Advil from her office when she noticed I wasn't feeling good. She is truly a saint.
I am not a math person but Professor Calden made math manageable. 2 take home exams, only 1 in person with some group projects as well. Super caring, funny, and effective in her teaching.
Do not listen to the reviews for this class, the final exam is mandatory and in-person. There are assignments due every Wednesday and Sunday, which are not that hard but she still requires homework over breaks. Very unprofessional with emails swell, writes them like they are texts and doesn't answer simple questions.
2 mini quizzes each week + homework. Final is no longer optional but it was not too bad as long as you paid attention in class. Adena is a great professor who really cares about her students
She seems nice but you literally cannot miss a class and still pass the homework. Doesn't post any of the lectures or completed notes. The mini quizzes also contain concepts we learned weeks after. One bad mini quiz grade tanks your grade. I went to every class and reviewed constantly and I still feel I might fail the (in person) final.
the tests, quizzes, and HW were online & the final was in person. We were given a study guide, that she claimed was similar difficulty to the final. I spent two weeks studying the material alot & paid over $100 for a tutor. I felt extremely confident going into the test, but I was shocked when I only knew 7/30 questions. I got a 53% on the final.
so was so sweet. All assignment were online including chapter quizzes. The only thing taken in person was the final which was easy. Everything was multiple choice and I got an A without attending lecture this class is an easy A.
Such a good teacher. The reason I did not get an A was simply because I didn't go to class so I did not do too great on the final. As long as you keep up with the material, you will be fine. Only issue was having to buy a textbook no one used.
Lectures are uploaded so you don't really have to go to class; online textbook for homework, good practice; chapter quizzes and mini-quizzes are online and take-home. Do your homework, it will help your grade a lot. Easy to do well if you put in some effort and do all the assignments
Teacher could care less about seeing her students succed, after many times of trying to schedule times for extra help.. I recieved none. One of the worst professors I have ever had and would not wish this kind of support on anyone. DONT RECCOMEND.
Super sweet and caring, made math fun and easy suprisingly , i hate math. Gives extra credit and take home exams
Good professor. Weekly quizzes and homework. Can watch video lectures instead of going to class. All exams online besides final
Adena is great and as far as math classes go, it's generally easy. All work is online except for the final exam. Don't miss your online mini/chapter quizzes as you can't retake them or do them late, and they're worth a combined 60% of your grade.
Love Adena! She's very accessible outside of class and is always down to chat. She understands that some people think they're not good at math and teaches things step-by-step to reduce confusion. I am not the best at math, and I was never confused in this class. Easy to do well on quizzes and homework which are all online. 10/10 class
60% of the grade is from online quizzes, do the work and it'll be a easy class
I was very nervous about taking this class, coming from a non-traditional college student perspective. Last time I took calculus was junior year of high school. Then went on to do my military service. I ended up finishing the class with a 96! Do the homework, go to lecture, SI for exam reviews and you will do great. Final was easy and was curved.
Super nice professor and great lecturer. Do the homeworks and go to the lectures or watch them online and you'll be good.
Do the homework, weekly quizzes, and chapter tests (all online). Watch/go to lectures and the SI session and you'll be chilling. So many resources to get help if your struggling. I guessed on the final (in person) and I still ended with an A-
Class was alright. HW's are on Wileyplus and she had mini quizzes on canvas, which was annoying to manage what I had to do. All HW and quizzes are online, only in person thing is the final exam. Don't recommend skipping class as one missed class can set you back far. Final only worth 20% of final grade so take that as you will
Do not take this class with this professor. It is not worth it when there are so many other options in the calculus department. Very unresponsive and unprofessional emailer.
Don't take during the summer!!! Professor is nice but summer class is a ripoff everything is YouTube videos and Wiley. you also have to get more then 50% on the final to pass.
-graded on discussion post responses :| -you have to get at least 50% on the final to pass -you are required to pay for the homework website -multiple quizzes every week -long boring recorded lectures. AVOID AT ALL COSTS!
Do not take her during the summer! The class seems almost haphazardly thrown together from pre-existing recorded lectures and it shows. While the lectures themselves do a great job teaching what they cover, the rarely cover the breadth of problem types you are required to know for the homework and quizzes, and the TAs rarely were prepared to help.
Whatever you do don't take during summer. She made the final worth 50% so even if you did good in the class you fail the final you fail the class. Lectures unclear barely had what would be on the homework. Practice exam didn't have anything near what was on the finals overall just an upsetting class.
TOO MANY TESTS
Professor was nice but just went through the lecture without stopping most of the time. Homework was online and you had multiple tries which was good. Only 1 exam too!
DO NOT TAKE HER FOR SUMMER! Tons of quizzes. Lectures are long and useless youtube videos; ALL of the content in them do not show up in the homework, quizzes, and final--thus forcing you to self-learn the ENTIRE course. If you don't get more than 50% on the final you get an F on the entire course no matter how good you did on everything else.
Very sweet teacher and super easy to reach via email/office hours. Homework and mini quizzes are weekly but not super time consuming. Just go/watch the lectures and stay on top of homework and you'll be ok.
Shes awful, i dont know how she has a 4.4 it should be a 1.4. Average for the midterm was a 59, and no she didnt scale it. The homework and quizzes are all online but she decided to give us homework over Thanksgiving break??? Yea alright
Kind and cares about students, had no discussion section and attendance isn't required for lectures, but go. Provides handout/guided notes w/ problems for the lecture that she goes through, explains things well. Frequently gives practice problems in class and then explains. Short online quiz and homework, ~30 minutes, after every class. Take her!
She is nice but the median score on the midterm was around 60, with no curve. Why is she 4.4? Is this the first year having both midterm and final?????? Practice problems and exams only share same topics and concepts but completely different difficulties.
I took Math127 with her online over the summer, she is AMAZING! It wasn't as much course load as I thought and her lectures were so easy to follow. I am not the strongest in math but I managed great. 100% recommend her!
Adena was great at teaching math127. Very organized and taught the material very well. Homework consisted of wiley plus which was very annoying, and quizzes that were on canvas (One after every lecture)... Take Adena if you aretaking 127. The only annoying thing was the extremely difficult final worth 25% of your grade.
Took this as a freshman in my first semester. I don't recommend it. The material is tough to follow and overly complex for a 3-credit class. Adena is passionate and cares about students, but the workload is overwhelming, with too much homework and constant quizzes after every lecture.
Adena is a great professor, for a calc class she teaches very well. Her lectures are well taught and she always informs us in class of any changes or material on exams/quizzes. It is not an easy class but if you have to take this class definitely GO TO CLASS!! Lectures are recorded but it is way better to just be present in case you have questions.
Great professor! Makes difficult concepts more comprehendible as someone who as scared of calculus. She uses different colored pens during lectures which is SUPERRRR helpful. Based on what i've heard from friends, she is by far the best MATH127 professor to have. Wish the exams and HW weren't the only thing you are graded on.
This professor makes an entry-level Calc127 course way harder than it needs to be. Midterm average was about 60% with no curve, even though the exam is the same as other sections. Lectures are unclear and rushed. The high RMP rating does not match the actual classroom experience. Higlyh doubt all those good reviews are FAKE
Adena herself is very nice and does try to make you understand her material but moves way too fast during her lectures and does not give enough time to take notes. The average on the midterm was a 60% and the workload can be very overwhelming with homework questions being way harder than anything we did in class.
Adena is nice but the way she teaches made learning Calc way harder than it should have been. I'm always left confused after every lecture. I'd say she is the best option for 127 though
I don't know why her rating is so high. Yes she's very nice but her teaching is very confusing, she posts little to no practice problems, then makes the exams nothing like those practice problems. The only people close to passing her exams are those who've already taking calc. Lots of homework that is a waste of time.
Dr. Calden makes the Calc 127 lectures so engaging and accessible. While attendance is not mandatory, I found that going to the lecture in person (even though it was at 8:30 AM) was so much more helpful than watching the videos. Many mini quizzes and wileyplus ($50 purchase), but not too bad if you keep up with it.
I was not good at math in high school but Adena explained everything so simply. Mini quizzes were easy, homework was tough. The average on her exam was consistently around a 60%, and there were only two (midterm worth 25% and final worth 30%), so be sure to study for those. This is overall very basic calculus and not a hard class.
I was nervous to take calculus in college since I hadn't taken it in high school, but Adena explained difficult concepts clearly and simply. Although lecture was at 8:30 a.m., she posted them. The midterm and final are weighted heavily, but homework and mini quizzes help balance your grade.
She is really nice but is strict with deadlines and doesn't offer extra credit. There are 2 exams the whole semester but they impact your grade a lot so do well. She does, however, usually take out the lowest grade of an assignment, etc.
Math is hard for me but Adena is a saint. 10/10 lovely person. I have ADHD and dyscalculia, go to her office hours if you struggle. She walked me through the entire semester and I passed with a little wiggle room to get the credit. She is phenomenal, it's so refreshing to have a professor that cares about her students. Shes perfect.
