Not only is the book a better teacher, it also has a better personality. Seriously though, the lectures are completely copy and paste off the textbook... and her accent is very hard to understand. If you ask her questions, she'll be defensive, and she doesn't even ANSWER your questions properly. Better choose a different prof!
Very hard to understand her. And the class in really boring. Her tests are hard because some her her questions are hard to comprehend. Her lessons are pretty close to the textbook.
Worst prof I've ever had! Her lectures are pointless-everything is fromt he text- she gets side tracked with useless examples. Is VERY rude to all the students. Does not answer any questions properly. Gets offended for no reason. Ppl have gone to the deam over her. DROP her class now!- not worth it.
Hard to understand and does not answer students' questions. Confuses herself and the class by mixing up different sociologists midlecutre.
really BAD teacher! Doesn't answer your question and is really rude when you ask her for help. Really hard to understand her with her accent and never stays on topic and she skips info on her slides. You have to teach yourself.
She is quite possibly the worst professor in the world! Ok at first you think she's french, WRONG! If she's not french then what the hell is she. Honestly like someone pointed out, the textbook is better then her. Her comments are really stupid and obvious, and her definitions are from the book. AVOID THIS PROFESSOR AT ALL COSTS! SERIOUSLY!!
Every class I spend most of my time wondering how she got the job.
forget very hard to understand, more like impossible, worst teacher ever. havent learned a thing.
Worst professor I have this term. You can't understand a word that she says. I find myself trying more to understand her accent then the information being presented. I feel like I'm back in highschool in that class. She calls people out when they leave class just to go to the washroom, which stops the lecture. Avoid her if you can!!!
This teacher should not be teaching. I'm sure she would be more helpful with another job. She is very rude and is not helpful when it comes to questions or comments. In my class we did well on the exam and she was literally upset for us doing so well. It is also very hard to understand her. Stick with the textbook and you'll learn so much more.
worst professor I have ever had. Desiphering what she is saying is next to impossible. Going to the class seems to make the subjects make less sense, causing you to become even more frustrated with her uselessness. Avoid at ALL costs. How did she get the job??
Im not a student who gets bad marks and wants to complain: I get good marks and applaud good teaching. This prof is horrible, don't ever take her class. The tests are easy, but the written work is ridiculous. Pedagogy = nil. Only come to get her participation marks: the textbook is more useful than her. Anger Boating shouldn't teach anything.
Omg.worst prof ever avoid her!!!
I would discourage other students from taking a course with this professor. Although she is very nice and approachable, her lectures are difficult to understand and very dull. This is not a hard class, but I think it would be more rewarding with a different professor.
she is kind of unclear in her teaching methods, and it's a pretty dull class. She seems like a nice person though. She is reasonable with students and is very approachable, and tries to encourage classroom discussions and interaction, but it never really works. Dull class, mediocre prof.
Cant understand a word she says
Although this prof is approachable, she's dull, seems unconfident and is totally unaware that students don't understand a word she says. She doesn't seem to know what the heck she's talking about... confused me.
Terribleteacher. Can'tunderstand a wordshe says. Makestopics moreconfusing thanthey should be. Spend moretime trying tounderstand the words that arecomming out ofher mouth than theactual lesson sheis trying to teach. you won't learn a thing inher class. sheyells at youif youhave to leave early orgotothe washroom. shedoesn'teven knowwhatshe'ssaying!
HORRENDOUS. I am not one to complain about profs, but DO NOT take a class with her. 10% participation mark is complete BS. Make sure u show up to write ur "questions&comments" on each new chapt. b/c she will mark them for PARTICIPATION and CONTENT. very unclear and extremely boring. avoid if possible.
This prof seems oblivious to the fact that nobody understand half of what she says. While she is pleasant and tries to engage the class in her own way, she would do better to focus her efforts on clarifying her lectures.
Hard to follow in class and not very clear, but she is very helpful when you go see her in her office, and she definately knows her stuff, just has trouble transfering the information to students.
she's very understanding and uses good examples to help students relate to the topics being covered in class
Hard to understand and not very helpful
This class is honestly the easiest I have ever encountered. The tests are VERY easy (at least to me): 60 MC, and a few bonus. The teacher herself is hard to understand at times, but she's helpful, and overall was pleasant (though she does get frustrated when noone answers her questions in class). I'd take it, if only because it's so incredibly easy
okay, people are constantly going on about her accent and how difficult she is to understand; and these people are probably making this up as an excuse not to go to class. She is a easy prof and very sympathetic to alternative learning styles. admitedly, her assignments are not very clear
didn't like her.... she is uncomprehensible... I attended 3 of her classes, and read the textbook instead of attending other classes.... The textbook is a MUCH better teacher than herself
sweet lady. assignments are not clear as to what she expects. tries very hard but goes off onto tangents. just as easy to read the books. sometimes the accent is an issue. difficulty controlling the class
She is difficult to understand and you realize it's not because of her accent it's because she goes off on wild tangents when she isn't reading directly out of the textbook.
OH MY GOD, RUN!!! As a student with an 8.0 average (4th year) you would think that this would be an easy A+ class, but NO, I had to work my ass off for a B. She is NOT approachable, and thinks that an average of 60 is great! you need to do a 4pg paper in groups of 4, a critical review per chp. you read, the tests are NOT representative, shes boring
One of the worst profs I've ever had. She doesn't know how to lecture properly...I find that she just rambles on and on. One of the most boring lectures I've ever had to attend each week. Having to do critical reviews each week were annoying. The group assignment was also a pain. If u get her as a prof DROP OR SWITCH OUT OF THE COURSE IMMEDIATELY!
Come to class. Be quiet and respectful and take notes and you will be fine. People chat and only show up to midterms. No wonder they fail. Her accent honestly isn't that bad. She expands on her slides and does not put them on WEBCT so class attendance is needed. Overall. Not bad.
She is nice, but she doesn't know what she's doing! So many random stories!
if you studied her notes and read the texts, you'd get a good grade. if you fail, then it's your fault. also, i had a chat with her and i thought she was really nice and easy to talk with.
VERY THICK ACCCENT!U get marks on"critical reviews"of assigned chapters.TOTALLY UNFAIR=she never told the class about the 1st review to do so no1 handed it in and we still didnt get marks4it! ALSO she ADMITTED to not wanting2 read200essays so she assigned us groups of 2,then the next day she sais she didnt wanna read 100 so we had2go in groupsof 5!
I found the teacher to not have too much of a bad accent. She gave out really good explanations for the subject which helped me relate in the exams. Her exams weren't as bad as some profs have (confusing questions). But she discussed everything from the textbook, so just attending her class and just her notes are enough to pass the class.
Theres 3 types of profs. Type A proffs have enjoyable lectures and easy tests. (What we all want.) Type B has boring/frustrating lectures but easy tests. Type C has boring/frustrating lectures but hard tests. And Type D has enjoyable lectures but hard tests. -------- This proff is a type B. She may be boring but if you attend class, Guaranteed "A"
Horrendously disorganized class. I think she/her TAs lost a total of THREE of my assignments and I noticed many other people having the same problem. Content is fairly dry and repetitive.
Can't understand anything she says, handles questions poorly, doesn't seem to understand course material.
Her accent is almost completely incomprehensible, and her knowledge of the material is mediocre at best. She does seem to want to help the students to pass however, I cannot ascertain whether she has the skills necessary to pull it off. Overall I wouldn't suggest her.The tests are easy as long as you study though.
she lost 2 of my assignments. made me rewrite the first then 2 weeks later found the other. i didnt hand in the 3rd assignment, but i still got a perfect mark for it. ???? she's cracked.
HORRIBLE HORRIBLE HORRIBLE. switch out nowwww!!!!
Again, VERY thick accent-hard to understand. But passed that VERY POOR PROF! Lost assignments, can't answer questions. Tests unfair! Very hard to listen to her lectures! DROP OUT NOW!!
drop out now! loses assignments, can't understand lectures, tests are not fair. worst class ever!!!
Lectures did not reflect what was on exams at all.
GET OUT NOW. Attending class is pointless and the slides tell you zilch. Turned me off of Sociology (my major) within the first month.
I can get to the 9th level playing Vortex on my iPod because this class sucked so hard. Readings are awesome, topic is awesome, Prof is bad. Never responds to emails, offers confusing advice (Student: double or single spaced? Prof: Ummmm you decide?), and gets her own answer key wrong.
Learing with this lady is like trying to peer though a cup of muddy water, run for your life
she is a great teacher, very nice and approachable. her accent isn't even hard to understand if you actually listen!!!!!!
The course is interesting but the problem the prof. is not that great because she will remember the marks of the midterms or an assignment. She is really disorganised as a person. I suggest people do not that this course with this professor.
The course is great but not the professor. She will lose assignments or midterms it will effect you. She is really disorganised.
Very hard to understand, Her man bashing class, i understand that we are the root of all evil in the world now can we move on. this is taught as a FEM class not a Soc class.
Well for starters you cannot understand her. Secondly, the midterms and assignment created lots of confusion when she would say one thing and the TA marked differently. Third she would take random attendance. Fourth,if you are in a class called Men Women Society, focus on all three, not how men are the devil and women are opressed in every aspect
Incredibly easy class - 1 paper, 1 midterm, and 1 final exam. If you are even half prepared you can ace all three. Her accent is no worse than a professor with a French accent! The class did have a women studies slant and I didn't find it to be a "man bashing", instead she was perhaps too accommodating for the many silly conservatives in class.
Thick heavy accent, difficult to understand unless you like to sit in the front row. Assignment are confusing and not clear, don't bother asking her for clarity go straight to your TA's! Read the text not course pack. studying the slides will not do you any good. And finally she takes random attendance. if u dont need it dont take it.
Run while you still can! She is very difficult to understand, her assignments are not clear. She doesn't understand the material she teaches. He lectures are based 100% on the material in the text/coursepack (she even sources the text in her exam questions), she messed up exam questions but refused to change our marks. RUN!!
It is not her accent that is hard to understand, it is the actual lecturing which is hard to follow. It has very little structure. Trying to follow what she is saying and follow the slides at the same time is useless as they dont correspond usually
just received an incomplete in her class... because she lost my MIDTERM paper!! shes hard to communicate with and useless
Useless professor. made the class write an asssignment in pairs because she didn't want to correct 200 papers...she has four TAs. Accent is too hard to concentrate on. Useless in emails. I had a death in the family and would not be able to work with someone, she told me to find one on virtual campus : |
- Accent is very hard to understand. Going to class is useless, all the slides are online anyways. Did not explain the project worth 35% very well, and made us do it in partners. Makes you buy two books totalling $130, but we never use them, and no questions from the book were on the midterm. Do not take any of her classes!
She gets a lot of flack for being disorganized but she really cares about her students. She wants us to succeed and to learn a lot. She's always willing to talk with students. If you put in the effort to go to class she notices and you will do fine on exams.
She has an accent an it is hard to understand her. Her instructions are VERY unclear, and she writes in the syllabus to use a sophisticated language when you email her, but she doesn't understand sophisticated english. She contradicts herself, and the feedback on the papers are IMPOSSIBLE to decipher as her handwriting is disgusting.
She gives participation marks by gatherine tiny papers with your name on them at the end of class. Problem was this wasn't noted in the syllabus and her classes always go past the actual time. I went to 80% of the classes and got 4/10 for participation. Her lectures are EXTREMELY hard to follow (I'm in fourth year, this is a second year class.)
Very disrespectful! Nothing to offer to studetns but feelings of distress and humiliation. She does not hesitate to belittle you in front of other students if you dare to question her methods of evaluation. Useless course!! Just repeats what the textbook is saying. BORING!!!
I love her. She's always helpful and will do whatever she can to help you succeed. All the students rating her low, need to keep up with one of her fave mottos. KEEP IT SIMPLE, STUPID. no need to go above and beyond when shes just asking for simple things. When students try to over-achieve I find she puts them in their place so being such smartasse
Students tend to like her a lot or not like her at all. I'm one of those who likes her a lot. She's very accommodating and allows students to have a say in how the course is structured (i.e.: how many readings to do, essay due date, etc). While she does not write out all her expectations she is very willing to let you do things your way.
Worst prof I have ever had
Avoid her like the plague! Midterm class average was 49%! Her TA marks completely different than what she asks you to answer. Her accent is hard to understand but not impossible, its the least of her problems. She gave me a 4/15 for participation, even though i handed all of the participation reviews in and participated in discussions. Terrible.
The prof is very passionate about the subject material, and she's a good speaker. Sit near the front of the class if there is no mic because her accent is thick and sometimes hard to understand. She takes attendance periodically. Do the readings, attend class (especially for videos) and you can do very well. Pay attention to the assignmen
I was extremely frustrated with this prof. If she's teaching one of your classes, I recommend you drop it and spend your time on something more productive.
The best I can do to describe her class is that it is an unsafe place. Her language and assumptions are violent. If you challenge her on this or express that you feel unsafe she will corner you in front of students and try to humiliate you. I asked her not to laugh at my experiences and she said that I was being an activist
This professor is honestly one of the worst professors that I have had in 4.5 years of university. Her syllabus is a joke and basically a list of do not do's. Her assignments and expectations are unclear. She will also discuss your criticisms or questions at length in front of the entire class (although she does not identify you by name).
Incomprehensible prof. Unclear expectations on assignments, unclear marking.
Could not understand her and always bugged students for participation. Midterm marking was unclear with no comments. Lectures were not clear and some classes felt useless
Last year of university went off horribly with this prof. Worst prof I have ever had. Did ok in the course, but was left feeling dead inside.
Contrary to many other comments, I found this course to be quite easy to follow- and I am not majoring in social sciences. As long as you do all the assigned readings and write the notes down, you are going to do well. She does try hard to be helpful and she is aware of her accent. Still, she wasn't quite accommodating with my circumstances.
She is so nice and helpful
The course was all over the place. The professor was not organized. She has a thick Ghanaian accent and uses old English sometimes. Very hard to understand. Comes off as a bully. She will ask students questions, and when they give a different answer contrary to her beliefs, she will humiliate them in class. Run!!! Do not take this class with her.
Don't ever take a class with this teacher. Seriously insulting and inconsiderate. If you know one thing about feminism and patriarchy, you will hate this class and her opinions. Calls people out for gender blending, is ridiculously heteronormative, completely ignores major issues within society. Ugh.
This class made for a terrible last semester. She is rude, obnoxious and talks about irrelevant material. Does not address students comments and blows up when challenged on the material she chooses to present. Only presents one side of an argument and over-generalizes. Did not use the textbook and did not count actual class participation for marks.
Thought it would be an easy class, however, I was wrong. She's not a bad prof, but sometimes hard to understand because she has problems expressing herself. Always helpful when you see her during office hours, but doesn't reply emails. some people found uncomfortable taking classes with her because she is RUDE in class. Overall, not recommended.
This professor is not very good at communicating. She knows her material but she is not very good at relaying that information to her students. Honestly, your better off just doing the readings. I wouldn't recommend her.
Well all I have to say is that I took this class as my first elective ever in 4 years of university and regret it. It sounded like a good class until I met the prof. She is very inconsiderate, calls people out in front of the class for talking when she's always 10 min late. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. Don't even understand how she became a prof.
All you need to know about her abilities as a prof is what myself and a friend wrote on the teacher evaluations. Question:'How could this class be improved?' My answer: 'I don't have enough time to list all the issues.' My friends: 'The first step to improvement is replacing the prof.' So yeah, I'd say your best off with a different prof.
i actually liked this prof, once you know her one on one you'll see she's open minded and willing to help. She's fair game really, if you're willing to learn she will help you. She "picks on people" to help understand specific concepts, not to make you look bad. Her notes reflect the majority of readings.
Everyone needs to stop stressing. She's a helpful and understanding teacher and is there when you need her. She's from AFRICA OF COURSE SHE HAS AN ACCENT. But that doesn't mean she's hard to understand, if you ask she will clarify. Soc=participation, participation=she's not frustrated with the class. GET TALKING. Overall easy class, Great Prof!
I really like this Prof. she is an excellent prof. she knows what she is talking about. she is very helpful and always make the class fun and a place to be for lectures. Her accent is really clear. i will recommend her to everyone
Smart, witty, and makes the readings understandable. It was a pleasure to be taught by her
I did well on midterms though I don't listen to lectures at all. She's really inconsistent and her lectures are extremely hard to follow. You're better off just copying the slideshows and doing the readings. If you have a question, hope to god you have a good TA. She's really not much help.
perfect
This prof is the worst I have ever had. The course itself is easy but she is just so confusing. Goes off topic a lot and make you wonder what she is talking about. 1st mid term everyone did bad only a very few passed. Do not take her class!
She is a GREAT prof who is passionate about what she teaches. If you attend classes regularly and do your readings and STUDY the slides, you will do great. I almost failed the midterm and got an A as a final mark. For those of you complaining about her accent, stop using it as an excuse!
She's a decent prof, but her expectations for the paper and exams were a bit unclear. She doesn't post her slides online, which was irritating because she goes through them very quickly. It was a ok class
If you have the professor DROP THE CLASS. She is completely unapproachable, unwilling to compromise, and takes personal offence during class discussion. Yes, she does have an accent, but you can understand her, however, I still believe she should post the slides as she is unwilling to repeat herself. Overall, awful, do not take this class.
THIS PROF IS SO BAD. Dont take this class and save yourself a massive headache
Please avoid this professor like the plague. She continually laughs at her student's expense when they propose an opposing view, and even said today in class that she had no interest in debate. She generalizes on all topics covered and this course has turned me off taking any FEM courses in the future. AVOID HER LIKE THE PLAGUE
This is the worst and most offensive professor I have ever had. If you would like to learn anything from the class, or enter a safe space where discussion is encouraged, do not take this class. The professor has an extremely disappointing and offensive understanding of feminist issues and humiliates students who try to provide any input.
She's an easy prof and wants you to succeed. If you actually go to her classes and read the powerpoints, take notes and do what you have to do you will do great. She`s there to help and if you want to talk to her after class she actually stays. She's a great prof.
This prof isn't nearly as bad as the comments make her out to be. I had a summer course with her and I got an A - it was easy. If you go to class prepared and copy all her slides there is no way you will do bad. People don't like her because of the marks they receive. Do the work and you'll get the grade you want.
This professor is not bad at all. the reason why students fail is because they look down on her(they think because she's black and different, he way of teaching is not normal). i barely opened the text book. just listen to her in class, read her power-point, she hints exam questions. you'll be fine. i finished with 99100. she was even my reference
Can't understand anything she is talking about. Doesn't post slides so you have to go to every single class. If you have a question, do not count on a helpful answer.
VERY vague with requirements for all assignments, asks you to write about "feminist theoretical arguments on globalization" but never tells you what they are and they aren't definitively listed online anywhere. everyone is afraid to speak in class because she mocks what they say. cant understand her accent - not her fault but still problematic
Her lectures were very interesting and she has a passion for what she teaches. Really wants students to succeed. Thought expectations for assignments may be unclear. The exams were fair and she's a fair marker if you show what you know. Comments make her seem worse than she is. Moderate amount of reading but if you go to class its not bad.
Absolutely the worst class I have ever taken. She is a nice person but very difficult and frustrating to communicate with. My group received a 76% on the essay assignment, which was ok for us. Her tests (midterm and final) were so difficult to do well on. Gives no direction as to what to expect. The course pack is essential to passing. READ IT.
Very inconsistent and not helpful
THERE ARE ONLY 3 PROF'S THAT ARE BLACK AT UOTTAWA, AND HONESTLY THAT IT WHY I TOOK THE COURSE INITIALLY. BUT THE PROF IS AMAZING SHE IS SOOOO UNDERSTANDING AND NOT ON THESE HIGH HORSES THAT THE OTHERS ARE ON. I WOULD RE-TAKE A COURSE WITH HER IN A HEART BEAT
No,you will not be spoon fed if you take this class.. Skim the readings (she will cover main points in her slides), take good notes (she doesn't post her slides), and listen to what she has to say! This was an extremely informative class but you must put in work to get a good grade. She was always available for extra help if you needed it, JUST ASK
She's a nice professor, she does make it easy enough to pass. Those who don't, probably don't have the notes, missed the participation marks or didn't try at all. Read the slides from lectures and you would do fine, if not read the articles and get a better understanding, because it's basically a summary. Sometimes she may not be clear though.
She lost my final exam paper!!!!!!! the most awful prof ever. Basically you can not learn nothing in her class.
Disrespectful, unclear, unhelpful, worst teacher I have ever had. She is rude to the students and has a very tough accent. She is VERY rude about this and provides NO help for students who do not understand what she is saying. You basically have to teach yourself.
While her accent is difficult to understand at times it's not the barrier everyone seems to be making it out to be. However her grading criteria and expectations for assignments are VERY unclear. She does have a tendency to laugh at students and shut opposing ideas down on occasion. Wouldn't say she's the friendliest.
Kind of a repetitive class, but if you're looking for an easy course to fulfill a SOC requirement for a major or minor, it's not a bad choice. Got a B wo doing a single reading (I did go to every lecture, though). She is a chill prof but if you don't pay attention in lectures you won't do well in the course. 1 midterm, 1 exam, 1 (group) paper.
As a prof, not bad., but her accent is hard to understand. I lose focus as I try to understand what she's trying to say and absorb what's being explained simultaneously. Just stay at home and study from the textbook and you'll be okay.
The worst professor I've had so far at uOttawa. Accent aside, her lectures are all over the place and her line of thought is extremely difficult to follow. She refuses to post notes online even under exceptional circumstances, and was very rude about this. She gives no indication as to what will be on the exam and asks extremely specific questions.
I loved loved loved her in this class. I'm a science student and took it as an elective in the summer. Partnered research project was easy, graded fairly. Both the midterm and final were easy if you go in and ask how she wants her questions answered. She loves to be asked questions in, and after class, & loves to know people are enjoying it!
One of the worst profs I've ever had. She was very unclear about her expectations and obviously didn't know english very well. When students tried asking her questions in class she wouldn't give a proper answer since she couldn't understand what they were asking. I basically taught myself the course.
Worst prof I've had in my 3 years at uOttawa. Asks questions about material before we've even covered it and then freaks out that we're wasting her time when nobody knows the answers. Comes across super rude over email. TA was super rude as well. Reads common sense things off the slides but midterm doesn't reflect her teaching at all. AVOID.
I found this prof very good and fair. Class was interesting and straightforward.
Easy marker. Not always great at explaining concepts so get ready to read the textbook. Does care about her students and seems willing to help. Exams are very fair.
I was not impressed. At first I liked her but as the semester went along she became more unclear. She doesn't fully explain what she expects from you, instructions for group paper are unclear and she doesn't answer questions no matter how specifically you ask. Her group paper assignment was tough because it was in pairs. T/A was very rude.
Although she is a very kind woman, she is not the best prof. She is very unclear about what she wants in terms of assignments, and complains about having to go to her office hours. She has a good heart, but I would NOT recommend taking this course with her. We had weekly assignments each worth 2% and she rarely gave out 2/2.
Unorganized and at times rude; not clear in her lectures, expectations, or grading criteria. Taught outdated material, examples given were anecdotal. Did not answer questions of clarification well, shut down and ignored opinions that differed from her own. Yet, an easy marker and posts all of her slides, attendance was 5% but otherwise unnecessary.
Her explanations of concepts weren't very clear; she also didn't accept people's opinions if they were different from her own. Overall would not recommend this prof.
Went into the course with high expectations and was let down. Prof started our midterm 40 minutes late, almost didn't allow us to rewrite it, and was very rude the entire time. She only let the class rewrite when students threatened to go to the dean. EXTREMELY unclear and rude when asked for clarification. Sad bc this could've been a great course!
Professor lacks clarity in her lectures and expectations. She is not a fair marker, expects a lot from students on midterms and in papers even though she explains concepts very poorly. Would not recommend.
She seems very kind-hearted, she is not a very good lecturer; lectures are extremely dry to the point where I couldn't stand sitting through an entire class and taught myself the whole course from the textbook. Very disappointing, this class has so much potential. She seems so sweet and caring, but I would not recommend.
Dont understand her. Just read the textbook.
Ok so I am never one to be negative. this prof is absolutely terrible. I have never met a professor so unprepared and confusing. She told us to buy a 120$ textbook to which i read, highlighted and memorized. and then a WEEK before our midterm, she told us we bought the wrong version and to go get the new one... I AM DISAPOINTED.
the class is absolutely awful. more than half the class bought the wrong book because she told us to and the entire midterm was based off the book no one had. the lectures don't make sense you might as well just buy the PROPER book and teach yourself. we confronted her about the grades and she said too bad even though the midterm average was a D.
Horrible. Had us buy the wrong textbook and expected us to buy a new $100 book a week before the midterm. She is very unorganized, contradicts herself and the textbook on numerous occasions, and has VERY unclear expectations. Took this class for an easy elective, very disappointed. Would NOT recommend.
AWFUL - She always contradicts herself and is never available to students for questions. Most of the class purchased the wrong textbook because of her. Do not take her class if you want to learn and get a good mark.
This prof is one of the worst I've ever had. She's rude to students, doesn't answer questions and never mentions the tasks due. The course subject was interesting but the way she teaches it makes it very boring, not to mention her accent was hard to understand. The lectures overall were disorganized and repetitive, I wouldn't recommend her classes!
Disorganized! She'll stay on the first slide and teaches for an hour. Then she'll skip 40 slides and you'll be lost. Slides are WORD FOR WORD the textbook so just read the textbook. Don't really need to go to class. Exams are easy! MCQ and you have to answer 2 out of 6 short answers which is pretty generous.
She's kind&passionate. Due to English not being her native language, she can be slightly confusing&will accidentally contradict herself. The test&exams reflect the mandatory textbook, word for word. No need to attend class unless you want to get participation marks or participate in class discussions.
Don't need the textbook if you go to class. The material is interesting if you pay attention and participate in discussions. Cares about her students and is accessible outside of class. Exams are right off the material in the powerpoints so there are no surprises on exams.
I thought she was a good professor. Interesting course.
Horrible teacher, the worst accent on any teacher Ive ever had you cant understand anything she say. As wel her TA where lost one would tell you something and than another would say something different dont recommend her
Really nice prof and teaches easy (but boring) lectures which are based off of the textbook. Don't buy or read the textbook because all of the info is summarized in her lecture slides. There are 2 midterms, a paper (with a partner), and a final, which are all fairly easy if you study. For sure one of the easiest courses I have taken.
Very very difficult to understand her lectures. She has a very thick accent, and while I can understand her clearly when shes speaking normally, when lecturing she talks in run-on sentences. Class was incredibly boring and dull. The readings are all online though and arent terribly necessary to pass. TAs were very helpful. Assignment w/ partner.
She is easy to talk to and you can reach her outside of class but the lectures were very dry and I found I could have gotten more out of the class. Wouldn't take it if you don't have to!
She takes attendance/participation marks which is fine but lectures are extremely dull so it's hard not to want to skip. She is also very unclear when it comes to expectations, whether it's for an exam or a paper. I also found her grading to be a little on the hard side.
There are random in class individual or group "reflections" to do about the lecture to get participation marks (10%), a midterm (30%), research project (20%), and final (40%). Lecture notes / powerpoints are NOT posted online, so you have to go to class and take notes. Ended up dropping after 1 class.
Had her last semester, was easy grade if you do the readings and go to class. The midterm and the exam were straightforward. Would take her again.
She is a good professor and easy to understand. She is very passionate about what she teaches. There are many students who skip or don't read the text book so they complain but I did all the readings and went to 100% of the classes and got an A-. She is not for people who expect good grades but don't do the work.
Attend class and do the readings and you'll do well. Her criteria are very specific and attendance is an easy 10%.
Lectures are completely useless. Just read the assigned chapters in the textbook and study them for the exams. She takes sentences directly from the textbook so answers are easily recognizable when writing the exam. Her expectations for the assignment are not clear at all , so expect to score low on the assignment. exams are really easy.
Shes a really good lecturer and talks with passion and knowledge. Shes actually a bery good prof, her midterms are easy and have 2 short answers which are basically definitions that are from the ppts. Her power point are everything you need to know. Her lectures are a little boring and not alot of people ahow up but thats because everythigs ppt
She is a great prof! no need to buy the tectbook, she puts everything on the power point.
She seems like a wonderful person and good conversationalist. But I just didnt like her as a professor. I felt she had to rely on these random participation assignments in order to make students go to her class as well as leave key points out of her notes so you have to listen to her. Wouldnt take her again. But I'm sure her style works for some.
Just horrible and unprofessional
I loved this prof. She is so down to earth! & SHE ACC CARES. A lot of the people who are rating her badly is only because of her accent. She might be hard to understand for some, although she speaks perfect English. It takes self-reflection and deeper thought to change the mindset of deeming someone as unprofessional because of where they are from
It is not her accent. I wish it could be so simple.
This is the best professor I've ever had. She is extremely interesting, professional, and genuinely WANTS her students to succeed. She offers participation marks & reflection papers which helps stay on top of readings and can get you easy marks which ADD UP. I think some people writing these reviews needs to practice some active listening in class.
This professor clearly wants her students to do well. This is by far one of the easiest classes you will ever take; the final isn't even cumulative and only assesses you on one month's worth of content. the lectures were a little dry but the course has made me more open minded about how i view others and i am glad i took it
I personally found this class to be bird course. She just reads off the slides during class that are posted online so there's no real reason to show up, except for the occasional participation assignments. Her lectures are very monotone and boring. She is sweet and caring though and you can tell she really believes in what she teaches.
I am shocked at the ratings for Professor Aggor-Boateng. I have taken two classes with her and she is extremely knowledgeable, funny, and personable. She wants to see all her students succeed and will help you if you see her in her office. Marking is fair, and the readings were interesting. Show up, care about the course, and you will do fine
Attend lectures to receive her random in class credit. Don't listen though, she rambles on with nothing important. Study the slides and you'll be fine. Ask her for exam reviews, those questions will be on the exams. I would sit in class and just write the notes, so I was there for the credit. I didn't listen to a word she said, didn't need to.
Just show up to class to get the attendance marks and read the textbook while you're there instead of paying attention. Generally an easy A.. the content is a good base for future classes
Prof. Aggor's class was an elective for me. She is a really easy prof and tells you that you need the textbook, however, she covers everything on exams in her Ppt. She just reads off the Ppt. all class so showing up is only necessary for attendance. She takes attendance every class that accounts for 10% of your final grade. really easy GPA boost.
Just don't take it, it is not good for your mental health, ignore student question and when you ask for an exam outline, she said: you are not studying for a mark, she won't give you any help, can not control her class time.
Do not take it unless you really have to. Hard marker, and won't answer emails. Even when I complained she refused to help me. Zoom lecture go over the hour and 15 minutes. Lectures are unorganized. Mentally exhausting class. Just do yourself a favor and never take a course with this prof :)
This prof was really nice and the class really was an easy A. There was a total of 5 small discussions to do (like 3 to 5 lines long) one midterm and a final. She sends you all the PowerPoints and the exams are multiple choice. I recommend taking this class as an elective if you're looking for one.
Loved this prof! She reads her slides the whole time but she would make me laugh all the time! I don't know why she has such bad reviews, she really isn't that bad at all! Easy grade if you only study her slides :)
She does not have an exact rating scale and she did not grade you even you did homework on time!
I would definitely NOT recommend taking her class while school is online. She made 17 slides last a 3 hours. Also told me she would reassess my mark and never got back to me. Honestly she's nice, but she's not good at making the course content engaging and she's disorganized. Readings are not actually required.
She is such an amazing professor! Best Professor I have ever had in my whole life. She is super passionate and she actually cares about the students. Would highly recommend taking her courses. Love her class soo much I took her 3rd year DMV3106 class and I also love it. I love her soo much and Im so grateful for her
Professor Aggor-Boatengs classes are relatively easy. She does tend to ramble on about unrelated stuff but the class is easy to pass on your own its the textbook and slides.
Overall pretty good prof. Easy assignments. Lots of readings from the textbook. Easy midterms. The prof has a good sense of humor. I would definitely recommend this prof.
This class is an easy A. Although, her lectures are extremely dry and her power points are almost all directly copied from the textbook (which in my opinion, you don't need to pass the class). I would not take a class with this prof in the future.
The material was okay and I wasn't overly enthused in this average class. There were 3 hour lectures weekly, and the exams were automated multiple choice with rudimentary questions. Her teaching was iffy and it took her two months to give my class back a short research report that she was capable of grading, but was just lazy to do it.
This prof was not the best I've had. Her lectures would consist of her reading off the slides, in which content was directly taken from the textbook. There was no point in reading the textbook as all of the information was in the slideshow. Therefore, I would not recommend purchasing a textbook for this class.
No offence but I couldn't even understand what she was saying. Her lectures and the way she talks is very disorganized. she doesn't give clear instructions AT ALL!! she just expects us to know everything ourselves and then gets angry when we email her. she is not understanding of students at all and she doesn't even let people speak in class.
I found her to be a very caring prof and she has good powerpoint slides. She was very understanding and explained concepts well. If you copy the slides and memorize the main points you will do well, I'm genuinely not sure why she has such bad reviews. You do have to actually understand the material but she is not an unfair grader.
I wrote the positive review a couple of reviews down and I now take it back. Definitely avoid this professor unless you don't have a choice. Avoid emailing her, she is nice in class but has been very rude not only to myself but to my classmates via email, if she even replies. Unreasonably harsh grading out of nowhere. Everyone had issues.
rarely respond to emails, and when she does her answers don't make sense. Lectures are unorganized and confusing. slideshows are filled with spelling and grammatical errors that make them nearly impossible to understand. relatively fair grader, but assignment criteria is confusing
What a fascinating class but unfortunately taught by the wrong person. The prof is not clear in her grading. Very tough and at times stubborn beyond reason. She seems to be on defence mode even when the students' questions and concerns are appropriate. Would suggest taking this class but with a different professor.
I took this course in the summer of 2022, and she only uploaded PowerPoint, nothing else, no live or recorded lectures. I can't imagine spending over 4000 Canadian dollars for this kind of education. She'll tell you to reread the textbook if you don't understand anything! This course is a joke! She does not teach at all! Avoid at all costs!
Her lectures were so boring and felt so long. Hard to be engaged in her class. Lots of content from the textbook that she doesn't explain in class and that were on both midterms and final exam.
If you want an easy credit to fill a spot in your time table this is great, other than that I learnt nothing. She reads paragraphs off power-points, has numerous errors in almost anything she writes in her notes, or questions she forms on exams. Her final online exam had missing words in the questions. She should not be a prof. Very rude too.
Enjoyed this class. Has good outlines and grading criteria. Posts slides. Graded on class exercises & participation (15%, 5 written exercises total in-class, short), Midterm (30%, take-home), Group research paper (20%, straight-forward paper, groups of 2), and Final Exam (35%, take-home). Very knowledgeable on the topic. Would take her class again.
Don't go to the lectures.
Although she tends to provide excessive context and speak at length, causing me to lose focus at times, it strangely keeps me engaged (I realize that sounds contradictory). However, in this particular class, her tendency to share brief anecdotes about the subject matter has aided my understanding of the issues at hand. Overall she is a great prof.
She is a really kind professor and she is funny. But you don't need to go to her lectures to do well. All of the midterms and even the final exam is online. If you read the textbook or the slides your guaranteed to do well.
Don't understand why some ratings are so low. SHES GREAT! and super funny. Class average was an A so I dont understand why ppl dislike her. TAKE SOCIOLOGY WITH HER! TRUST ME.
I audited this class to see if the poor reviews were accurate. She repeats paragraphs from her slides, and is very rude when speaking to students. Seems like an easy course, but I would avoid this professor.
I am quite surprised by the low rating, she is great as a sociology professor. Although the lectures are dry, as long as you do the readings, engage in the class discussions and understand the material you will do great in the course. Would take her in the future if given a chance again.
NO NO NO, NO! even if your life depends on it, NOOOO!!!!!!!!!
She's fine as a person, but as a professor she's very lacking. I feel like I learned nothing in three months, I lost motivation to attend class which is unlike me. Her lectures drag on, the slides barely make sense, she goes off topic and can't even get through 25 slides in two classes. Her grading criteria is also very vague and unhelpful.
very easy class, teacher was not helpful
The class itself is really really easy. Exams are all online and MC, and papers are graded very easily. My criticism is mainly towards the proff as essentially all the learning comes from the textbook. You don't really learn a lot from her and she drags out 6-8 slides a lecture across an hour and 20 minutes. If you want the easy A go ahead.
adolphine is nice enough but is not the most interesting prof, her lectures can get a bit heavy and dry but the slides are so full that you can skip class and just look at the slides and be fine. a bit hard to understand but again, the slides are full so if you miss something you won't be totally lost. online exams and no textbook
The class was very relaxed, and the professor's teaching style, although relatively general, was effortless to understand. The tests and assignments are very simple and easy to master.
lectures are boring, just repeating the slides and readings, confusing assignments
The lectures are so boring and dry, she talks around the same couple concepts for the entire hour and it's hard to grasp what we could be tested on based on the materials we've covered so far, and our midterm is next week
The lectures can drag on and the slideshows are confusing, but using Unstuckstudy alongside the slides helped me stay on track. The grading is a bit unclear, but overall the class is manageable if you put in the effort.
broke right to confidentiality multiple times with students with SASS. Announcing their names in class and what their accommodations were.
Hard to understand. Inaccessible after class. Won't take responsibility for messing up your mark. Held an online midterm and messed up everyone's grades and then lost our original marks and blamed it on the students. Dry lectures. No rubrics or grading criteria provided (even upon request). Avoid her if you want to maintain your GPA.
she was fine idk why a lot of people don't like her course. just do your own notes from the powerpoints which by the way are very organized and straight forward, no long paragraphs. use those notes from midterm and exams.
I though people were being dramatic in their ratings and I was wrong. 1. During lectures, the prof often made significant mistakes and had to be corrected by students. She says doesn't fact-check her information because it would take too much time (!!) 2. The textbook was entirely based on the USA 3. MANY typos and missing words in exams
Attendance isn't mandatory but lecture slides are not posted. Both the syllabus and lecture slides were filled with grammatical mistakes. Lectures are quite hard to follow, no headings, and large blocks of text that make little to no sense when you try copy them down. Very disorganized class, hard to grasp the content and prepare for assignments.
Broke SASS confidentiality, has no idea how Brightspace works, randomly assigned a project worth 10% that wasn't on the syllabus
Not a hard course. But the prof sometimes would weave her political views into the curriculum to such an extent that I couldn't tell whether it was textbook knowledge or not. The textbook is VERY IMPORTANT. She will strongly urge you to purchase her renowned textbooks, even requiring us to buy two different editions this semester.
Dr. Aggor-Boateng is a very nice person but her class is not informative. Her assignments are graded hard by TA's and she does not provide a rubric. She spends most lectures on one or two small concepts that really don't need elaboration and her slides are disorganized and not posted so it's important to read the text (only 1 ch/week).
My only issue was how unclear the instructions were on the written assignment (and yes there is a late penalty.) The course itself isn't difficult if you put in the effort and submit work on time as the class average for the first midterm was quite high, however I feel that some of the instructions could've been worded better.
