excellent!!!!
I really enjoyed this class!
Poorly organized lecturer and little effort into making good tests.

he hates to teach, thats why he is so bad!!!!!!
VERY BAD
He is an okay teacher... very helpful when you go see him
not a good prof. Very hard, unfair marker.
Comments that could be made would be deleted for vulgarity. I suggest you keep that in mind.
This guy is an idiot.
he thinks he'sooo smart and everyone else is sooo stupid....if I was his mother I'd smack him in the head..and tell hiom not to be so rude to the people who pay his salary
this guy is a son of a bad guy ......he mad me cry....I HATE HIM
Strong, smart, somewhat demanding teacher. Does not tolerate idiots and slackers, many of whom come here to complain.
Before you call me a whiner, I did very well in his classes despite him. He is the most unclear, hard to deal with person ever. He pushes good students to the edge and makes others feel like idiots. Only take required courses if he teaches it
Lab marking scheme : horrible. Lab TA Gary: a major A-hole/horrible. Skandalis: Mr. A-hole. Please someone help me-I want to take fourth year bioinformatics but he teaches :( Very intimidating prof and also called us 'lazy-asses'and 'idiots' in lecture.
Not as bad as those ratings make him seem. He does ask lots of questions but it is to encourage independant thought not to make students look stupid. Afterward he always gives you the take home message so you don't leave too confused.
Definitely not as bad as the ratings make him out to be. Best teaching style of all the profs teaching this course, makes more difficult concepts easier to grasp, and as a few people have already said, questions are to reinforce what you have learned. So quit whining and open your textbook.

avoid like the plague

Definately avoid like the plague. This man builds up his ego by putting others down. If we were experts in the field, why would we pay to take the class?!?!??!
Ok, I will be fair. He's hard, reeally hard. He will pick on you in class, but that's how ppl pay attention and learn. He's tough, n he luvs it. Deal with it. Also, please please please, don't make my mistake. Don't take his courses as fun electives, coz they're not. He'll make u sweat, so if u like that jazz, u'll luv his teaching.
I will admit I am fearing his exam; but he teaches very clearly towards it. Genetics is obviously a very in depth topic. He makes it very clear when we are covering a topic just for interest's sake. I've learned so much from him already. His socratic teaching style is refreshing and engaging.
good prof that knows his stuff...however expects you to understand his lesson right off the bat..unless you ASK QUESTIONS!..that slows him down:P also, he does drill u in class with questions but hey, its the only class last year i was awake for more time than asleep while in d house
Really treats his class like we are super geniuses and sometimes needs to elaborate more on topics. His teaching style is engaging and keeps you awake, especially for an 8am class.
one word: "useless"...don't bother emailing questions or trying to schedule a meeting cause it will be a waste of your time...which is ridiculous for a prof that refuses to post notes online, or even use a text book to help u understand his mumbo-jumbo.
He does not teach effectively. His topics by the end of the year dont exactly total everything you were supposed to know... like in 2nd year molecular cell biology with Carlone we did the entire text book, with him, you do like 4 chapters. To some people thats good but i like to learn ALOT and hes not good for that. He is usually just confusing.
Very rude person, stuck up and arrogant. Will make it impossible for you to seek help outside lecture. Will never respond to emailed questions or requests for appointments. Takes no phone calls. Expects you to know the stuff somehow magically on your own. Not approachable at all, unfriendly in general.
Extremely rude. Stuck up, arrogant and very condescending.Doesn't take phone calls. Doesn't respond to emails to setup an appointment. If you catch him in the Biology Office area and try to talk, he'll tell you off - no matter what kind of question it is or how good/bad of a student you are. Doesn't post anything online. Usless, confusing prof.
Terrible Notes. Terrible Organization. Good Luck trying to study for his exams. BRUTAL.
Absolutely Useless. Rude, condescending, unhelpful. Does not encourage learning through questions/discussion with him. Doesn't post anything online. Says he will email you certain very detailed lecture slides and NEVER DOES. You're in trouble if u try to remind him. 1/10 teaching quality. For God's sake Dean, do something about this guy! I beg u.
I'm not sure why all these comments are so bad. I think he's an engaging prof who wants the students to know the material well. Go to class, take good notes, and make comments beside what he highlights to be set for his part of the exam. He asks lots of questions and always starts and finishes lectures with key concepts.
So........ he is an engaging professor and the questions he asked to me in class, i wont probably forget but he is rude. Exams are very straight to the point as well.
Protein biochem.. learned a good amount, but this professor is not a good person. Rude, condescending, and when I went to him for help he rudely turned me away when I went during office hours. He also enjoys making his students look unintelligent in front of their peers.
He was scary. Don't sit near the front or on aisle seats or make eye contact with him unless you want to be called on in front of everyone. I understand he's trying to engage the class which is great, but singling out random students who clearly don't know the answers to his difficult questions is not the way to do it...
He didn't use the text at all. Did indicate what would be on the tests and exams which was nice. Somewhat interesting to listen to. Don't sit in an aisle seat in any of his classes because he'll call you out and ask you a question that you probably won't know the answer to.
Hard to take good notes when he goes through the slides so fast. When you ask him to slow down, he replies "write faster." He also told us to only know the one way of deriving the Michaelis-Menten equation. On the midterm it said to derive it the other way. I asked him about it during the test, and he replied "you weren't listening." Very rude.
Terrible professor. Asks questions and doesn't really give the answers, confuses the lecture very easily. Loves calling people out and they never know the answers to his difficult questions. Tries to engage which is nice but does it the wrong way. Does no explain what to expect on midterms/exams. Avoid!!
Horrible prof! Is very difficult to understand and makes the content even more boring! Picks on students to answer questions concerning material that hasn't yet been covered. If taking his class sit at the VERY back! Do not take a class if he is the Prof.
I really enjoyed him as a prof even if he was a little intimidating. He'll test you on lecture notes, not from the text, so don't waste your time with that and just go to class. The more kids participating in class, the easier his exams and the nicer he is. If you don't wanna be picked on for questions, don't sit in the aisle. Great prof though!
One of the best classes I took in University. As a prof in BIOL 2F01 he was intimidating, but in a 4th year class he is excellent! He started the class off with asking us what we wanted to learn. I finally learned how to give an effective presentation. His knowledge and questions made me think. Very engaging!
Everyday during class, he would walk up the aisles and ask random people to answer his questions! Who wants to deal with that? By the end of the year, the majority of the class all sat as far back as they could to avoid him
His teaching method is not very helpful
Very unclear and painful to listen to. He could make the most interesting course dreadful. Seems like he doesnt even know what he is trying to teach youwhat he will test you on.
Not the best. Kinda hated him.
Almost stereotypical example of a tough but ultimately decent prof. He has a socratic-style of teaching where he'll make you think your way to answer instead of just giving it to you , he'll pick on students for answers but his style helped me remember most of the content come exam time. He's not very helpful though, wont go out of his way to help
Very Disrespectful (eg. not showing up in review session) . Feels like he enjoys giving everyone a hard time and seeing people failing. why would someone give you 27 MC for a test worth 30%.. and fill in the blanks each worth 3 marks. Are you SERIOUS??? DO NOT EVERRRR take class with this prof.
Terrible.
Worst prof I have ever had and I am in my third year at Brock. Does not post anything, very rude when answering questions about midterms . Does not explain what to study from the book, does not tell you what will be on the midterm "material wise". Tell you to go through lectures and you are there like thank you captain freaking Obvious. Very ruuude
Normally, I dont hate people I personal dont know. Skandalis is an exception. I attended all lectures minus like 2-3. I did all the reading from the book and his notes yet the course was a total disaster. Honestly, he manages to make the easiest material the hardest thing in the word.
loves to make the simplest things very difficult to understand. Ask questions to the class and will explain the wrong answers as if they are right. He uses intimidation to teach; helps no one. He will always refer to the textbook when realistically no student has time to check the things he doesnt explain in class. Pros: looks like Jeff Goldblum.
I really wanted to enjoy the course. I believe he knows his stuff, but he doesnt have to put down students to prove it. He will ask if anyone have questions, but no one wants to ask because to him there is such thing as 'stupid' questions; asking for a clarification will risk in him saying something like "werent you listening to what I just said".
oh gosh, terrible prof i asked him questions after class and he told me to google the answer. His lecture style is terrible and expects you to memorize everything he says. Honestly dont know why hes a professor he obviously hates teaching. Should only do research, he made life hell
He puts stuff on the tests that he never covered in lecture. Very condescending and does not care about helping his students' learning and success. If you actually want to learn, lectures are pointless because he tells you that you are "on your own" for most concepts. Do not take this course if you don't have too as it was my worst mark all year.
This course seems like it should be something that you could succeed in with enough determination, however his lectures and the exam questions are incredibly convoluted. He assigns the whole 800 page textbook as reading and seems to expect you to know all of it. Also, expectations on labs are not clear and marking is inconsistent.
Very condescending, dry lectures, slides are just figures from the text that you're expected to memorize (you are expected to memorize the entire textbook..). Exam and midterm questions are very unfair (midterm was 25MC worth 30% of final grade). He also enjoys walking up and down aisles to put students on the spot.
Avoid at all costs. By far the worst professor I've ever had. VERY unclear about expectations; essentially tells you the exam is on the whole 800pg textbook (minus 2 chapters). Seems to enjoy making students anxious, talking about how hard his exams are, how you're going to get stuff wrong, bragging about how his own son failed his class, etc.
He's a great professor and a well respected. People complain because they want a degree handed to them, but his tests were fair and his lectures were really interesting. If you hate him because you got a bad mark, maybe try harder.
he laughed when people got answers wrong in class and told us that theres no way were going to do good in the class. thanks bud
If you skip this class I can guarantee you won't do well, but if you go to class and pay attention, the material is actually pretty interesting. The topic is a little complicated but put in a little effort and it should make sense. The textbook and youtube videos help a lot. He calls on students which can be scary, but he is a great lecturer.
hard to follow in class
The midterms are easy if you study from his lecture notes, but the final is where everyone fails. He assigned the ENTIRE textbook to study, which I did, and my mark still dropped four percent after the final. He doesn't want his students to succeed. He makes fun of and laughs at everyone who isnt as smart as him.
I was hesitant about Dr Skandalis after hearing feedback from other students. I made sure to take advantage of his office hours almost every week to ask questions and he would quiz me. Very pleasant and friendly one on one and gives fantastic feedback. Went through midterms with me and explained things I didn't quite get. He is a great resource!!
Terrible teacher. Barely learnt a thing and he made 8am classes mandatory. The class was all over the place. He would just ramble on with only pictures on the slides. It was impossible to know where he was going with each lecture and what the main point was.
Does not post notes. Puts up a figure and talks about it for a while. Best advice is to type like crazy as he speaks and have your phone ready to take pictures of the lecture slides. If you go to his office he is very helpful. also record every single figure he puts up and go to the textbook to look at it and understand it. Textbook is essential
Trash. Lectures are so general and all over the place, you never know what the main theme is. Yells at you for asking a question and claims that, "you should know this already" when going to office hours. Absolute trash.
In university you take control of your own education but this man did not want to help anybody in anyway, when asked questions in class he would say you should know this by now and laugh about how we would fail the exam. Tried to take advantage of office hours laughed at me and told me to read 18 chapters of the textbook to prepare for the final.
Skandalis was not a great prof. His lectures were hard to follow. He would post pictures of things then talk about them and it was hard to understand. The tests were not very fair, but you can still pass them if you study enough. Overall, would not take his class again.
I am currently taking this course during the pandemic and the online version is one that I do not recommend. His lectures are max 15 minutes long and the slides are not provided. His live lectures are not specific and do not contribute to the overall learning of course material. I taught myself this course.
I took this course during quarantine and I must say he ruined my life he was so unprofessional and so rude, also, he gave the entire class bad grades and 5 students dropped out including me. please if you don't want to lose your entire academic life don't sign up with any subject under this professor.
Honestly just does not seem to care, in the middle of the pandemic he opens up his first lecture with saying hes going to make it harder for everyone because it is online, and marks things totally wrong with one spelling error. Looks at you like you're an idiot if you ask questions. I am doing well in every class but his.
Probably the worst prof to ever exist. He legitimately wants you to fail and he brags about his own son failing his course. If you have any questions he won't answer or will make you seem stupid for asking questions. Lectures are awful and he does not provide the slides, they're usually just a single picture anyways. AVOID AT ALL COSTS! Worst prof!
Dr. Skandalis is obviously a very knowledgeable man, however I do not believe his efforts are best fit for teaching. His style is very demeaning. On several occasions where a student asked a legitimate answer, he told them to drop the course if they seriously needed to ask it. Content is very interesting, however he relies almost fully on textbook.
Combative pedagogy. It is fun and funny if you were paying attention and understand the concept. You'll remember the point but also if you don't do well under pressure, need time to learn a concept, are easily embarrassed, etc; Don't sit in the front rows as he will cold call you.
Probably the worst professor I have had. He seemed disinterested in teaching and told us to "just read the textbook."
I cannot comprehend how bad this professor is. So arrogant and thinks his class is dumb. Does not answer questions properly and just says to read the textbook and ridicules us for not knowing a question. Doesn't even read or answer his emails and completely ignores us. He skims through his lectures and doesn't provide anything. AVOID AT ALL COSTS!
Gets a bad rep but was honestly really helpful in this course. He takes time between every lecture slide to ask the class if there are any misunderstandings. Office hours were also a great resource. Even though this class includes content that is mostly review from secondary school, he took the time to explain concepts from the root.
Dr. Skandalis is genuinely an amazing prof. It is true that he calls on random students to answer questions, but that's what keeps everyone paying attention. He is very helpful during office hours, and will make sure you understand concepts, even if they were covered in secondary school. He absolutely does not deserve these bad ratings.
horrible professor, should not be allowed to teach as he has no lesson plans, deadlines, or grades, he is an absolute trash of a human that cannot do anything and will powertrip over anything. do not take this professor and if you do have to record and report everything.
Absolutely awful, Skandalis is completely unorganized and has no real structure to his course or lectures. His lecture slides are half a** diagrams from random websites and he doesn't even upload most of them. He offers no guidelines whatsoever as to what will be on the midterms or exams themselves. This course is pure torture, wouldn't recommend.
Skandalis's course is disorganized and lacks any clear structure. His lecture slides are poorly made and often sourced from random websites, with them not even being uploaded. There are no guidelines provided regarding the content of the midterms or exams. Overall, this course is EXTREMELY challenging, I do not recommend it if you enjoy sanity.
He's the best ever take 1P93
he jus ahs icl
This class is tough, and students give him a bad rep but everything he put on the exam, he taught… You needed to study hard to understand it (and 100% stay on top of things). Midterm 1 was decently fair. As well, he isn't condescending and rude, he's just sarcastic. I find it funny how sensitive some people can be, it's really not that deep.
terrible. that's all.
everything is wrong with this course
Would hope to never have him as a prof again. Throws pictures from textbooks into lecture slides and just talks, expecting students to know what he's talking about. Lecture slides aren't posted and help from him is very limited.
He is the reason I am on Lexpro. He made my mental health drop so so much and I can barely function now. He gets upset with people at lecture, he's brought up people to WRITE on the board to humiliate them as examples. Brock talks about mental health then has this guy
he just talks big to scare you into studying so dont mind that he actually tells you exactly what will be on the exam. midterm was stuff he taught in class pretty straightforward no tricks. he calls on ppl but i think he just does that to get the class interactive just sit in the back if you dont want to.
if i could rate him lower i would!
He does not like to help. He does not teach properly. He does not like to be a teacher. He picks on people. He makes fun of you if you don't know the answer or get it wrong when picked. He is harsh. He does not provide good lecture slides therefore always having to do extra work to finish notes and understand.
hes a bit rude. he told us to take a picture of a few slides of his lecture but i missed one of them (he changes slides QUICK) so i went to him after class and asked for the missing slide and he told me "if you clicked faster and youd have it" so he wouldnt let me see the slide.
He is not a good professor. He doesn't provide good lecture slides. I wish I dropped the class.
worst prof I've had!
A disaster of a class..... No guidelines and yaps about random textbook figures
• Microphone Usage: He often doesn't use a mic, making it hard for many students to hear. • Confusing Explanations: He frequently mixes up terms and makes mistakes without clarifying, leaving students confused. • Ignores Questions: Many student questions go unanswered, making it hard to fully understand the material.
He's the reason I dropped out of nursing
He does not know how to teach. He wants everyone to fail this course on purpose. In my opinion, because of this kind of professors, brocks reputation is bad.
Dr. Skandalis may be knowledgeable, but his condescending teaching style has created a toxic environment. He dismisses legitimate questions, often telling students to drop the course. Relying almost solely on the textbook and providing minimal support hes driven many students to drop out or transfer, leaving them feeling unsupported and demoralized
He makes fun of students for not being able to answer his questions. He might be smart but he's not fit to be a prof.should stick to research
Bro should stick to research
a bit rude ( i think he trys to be funny?) but a good teacher if you show up and listen to what says you can easily understand, he teaches right out of the textbook and gives hints on whats on the exam so as long as you show up and study you should be fine. exams are straight forward either you know it or you dont.
He talks about failing people just to scare you into studying tbh theres a method to his "madness". Its a tough course in general not because of him, you gotta memorize stuff its a stem course obviously. Study and youll be fine, ive noticed he gives hints here n there for exam topics and questions. Def makes you work for your grade though.
Lectures have no structure at all, he will switch from topic to topic and speed past the most important "most difficult" topic and then spend 20 minutes talking about something we are not required to know. He doesn't post his slides, which also have no structure. He asks students questions, and will continue to ask until they get it wrong.
Skandalis rushes through large concepts and makes the material very confusing. He also makes it seem like he intentionally tries to set you up for disaster when he brags about how most people who take his class will fail. I would suggest that he look into why people are failing and adjust his teachings to help more people understand and do well...
Do not take this professor. He regularly calls on students to answer questions and his class was such a mess all semester, it had no real structure
I love biology but not with this professor. Uses slides but does not share them and they don't have many words to begin with. He mumbles. Better get the textbook and stay on top of reading + studying cause you will be teaching yourself the course!! Can't miss lectures, he likes to change the syllabus with no announcements mid semester.
Randomly goes off syllabus during lectures. Is completely disorganized and no one really knows what is going on. I had to teach myself.
HORRIBLE CLASS. Do not recommend it to anyone, especially if you are a nursing student and will never need this Bio material again. Hated every moment of this class.
Content Heavy Course with hard midterms and final exams. Lectures are not posted but if you attend them you can take pictures of important slides/figures and find them in the textbook. Lectures can be really interesting and will ask students questions randomly. If you put in the work you can get a very good mark. Loved this course and the prof.
Rudest prof I've ever met. Asks his students during lectures to ask questions, then proceeds to cut them off every-time. His second midterm was absolutely brutal, couldn't find anyone who got over a 60. Doesn't care about his students. Also doesn't post lecture slides, and the ones he shows in class are so messy. The final was also not fun.
Absolutely terrible. So unhelpful and unsupportive, almost felt as if he wanted students to fail.
People say he is mean, and honestly, I just found him hilarious. He is honestly a sweetheart. It's the people who don't want to put the effort in that find him challenging. I don't think he has anything personal against anyone—some people are just a bit dull.
hes a really good teacher youll understand the material as long as you show up and listen, tells us exactly what will be on the exam and even offered bonus mark opportunities. hes not mean just a weird/sarcastic sense of humour and uses tatics to make students study. oddly enough i rlly liked him lol he just hates when ppl skip lectures.
if youve ever watched the tv show "dr. house" thats basically his personality ( sarcastic crude humour). good teacher just doesnt post slides and his powerpoints consist of pictures so make sure to write down what hes actually saying, he teaches straight out the textbook. PS: he reuses exams so just search them up
Brother cannot teach, he will give you a slideshow that is 2 pictures and then talk for 2 hours. If u missed the one sentance that is for some reason on the exam, too bad. he is the opposiet of tech savvy, and does not respond to emails. if you have the choice pick a different class time with a different prof or take it another year. Good luck.
Not great! He does not give you the lecture slides so if you miss something you are out of luck. He is funny but not good at explaining things. First day in the class he said a few will drop out and over half will fail. Then proceeded to say that his average is 67%, and that's not great considering most people need high averages for their program.
Barely went to his lectures as he would project pictures of the textbook and barely explain what would be going on. He also likes picking on random people in the lecture hall, so sit in the back, but be aware you will not hear ANYTHING he's saying. Hated when he switched into the lectures, worst 3 weeks of my life.
Does not give out slides, and the slides that he does use are almost incomprehensible. Moves very quickly through the slideshow, hardly allowing time for note-taking or comprehension. Can barely understand or hear him during lectures, and does not explain clearly or give well-explained answers to questions. Seems passive-aggressive most times.
He doesn't post slides and rushes through disorganized lectures, making it hard to follow and take notes. He expects everything discussed in class to be noted. The midterm was difficult and relied heavily on lecture details, and he doesn't like answering questions or repeating himself. He also randomly calls on students to answer questions.
Even though he doesn't post his content, just make sure to screenshot every slide and record his presentations because he does allow that. Also, sit near the front sides because his mic is low and he often picks on students in the middle front or back
will be very honest with you guys! Discard all the bad comments you see, Literally who wrote the bad comments wants everything to be served to them on a golden plate, they don't want to attend take notes, which is that what the Prof wants us to do. He ask us questions during the class just to make sure we understand the subject. Enjoy his classes!
Hard to follow lectures.
Dr. Skandalis was very difficult to work with and he did not provide much help in terms of learning content from the course.
Ignore all the bad ratings. He definitely wasn't my FAVOURITE but he was fine. It's true he doesn't post his lecture slides but if you record the lectures/take pictures and fill in the blanks with the textbook, you'll do just fine. His questions on the midterm were fair. Overall he's very overhated, he really is a decent professor.
He refuses to use the microphone in a 400 person lecture, so sit close to the front if you want to be able to hear him. Cold calls students in lecture, beware. Does not post slides as he wants students to come to lectures and actually take notes, does not give exam review. Textbook will be your best friend.
doesn't provide slideshows, expect that you can write down as fast as he's going. Switches through slides very fast.
Incredibly boring lectures where he just scribbles all over the slides while mumbling. Doesn't post any material as almost everything he does is just a figure from the textbook. Midterm was a bit difficult but managed to score okay thanks to the goat organic chemistry tutor on youtube
Honestly I liked the guy (I had not the greatest mark though) dont mis class like I did or you probably actually definitely will fail. For 2p02 remember the 20 amino acids, the functions of all the polymerase, topoisomerases and all, overall man he was funny and he coached a team next to my team, had a pretty good laugh
Does not post slides, but they arent helpful. If you sit close to the front you'll get picked to answer a question but if you're at the back you wont be able to hear him. He gave us an example m/c from the midterm, and gave good hints on what we needed to know. His exam m/c was tricky, he had 15 questions (out of 80).
Allegedly he eased up on our class due to previous years failing, so take with grain of salt. Not the most inspiring or motivational, and calls on students regularly to the front. You have to be really attentive as his slides include minimal words and he does not always post them nor repeat himself, but he provides a ton of exam hints.
I found Dr. Skandalis to be an ok professor. He unfortunately does not post slides, so make sure to take notes during class and use the textbook to study. He also tends to pick on students to answer questions, which is what many people may not be comfortable with. He gave us some hints for the midterm, and his questions on the exams were fair.
be prepared to be part of a reaping ceremony where a few people every class will be selected to participate and not have a choice. lectures are also not posted online and are not easy to follow even if you do show up!
