ADRIAN IS A DOPE TEACHER. Most students agree that he makes lit and poetry interesting by tying it in with social sciences and current affairs. i have never liked a literature class til this one. keep on rockin, adrian... maybe the guys who are complaining didn't deserve an A. I got one :)

I don't know what most of the people are talking about. His class is pretty easy. He grades easily on the oral presentations and tries to make everyone form their own ideas. If you're one of those people who hate english, you're not going to like the class regardless of who teaches it.

Adrian is a nice guy and all, and I know he has a hearing problem, but he can still be very intimidating because he has to be loud and direct. He can make students feel very uncomfortable. A's are hard to get. If you don't get A's at the beginning, don't expect to improve it, because he keeps favorite students at the top and the rest below A level.

This class was a little hard, but I'm glad I took it! True, he does make you give oral presentaions on your papers, and yes, he expects you to voice your opinion, but his class helps you formulate opinions and communicate them clearly. For papers you have to have rough drafts and outlines, but it really helps alot. Your will learn a lot!

Overall,Good Class. Positives: Makes you think. If you want to live in a hole, don't take his class. If you want to expand your knowledge, he'll help you and respect your opinion as long as you support it. Negatives: Doesn't follow plan, corrects papers as he would have written them even if they are not wrong, papers too long, Grades too hard.

this professor is great. he is willing to help u with your essays, correct your mistakes, and turn in a well written paper. he's into the hip hop scene as well, i dont think people noticed that. he's open minded, and it is a good thing he makes people volunteer to talk in class.read the book and do the essays. you will pass.

An excellent professor. Mr. Arancibia's class is by no means a cakewalk, as he challenges students to really think out their opinions before voicing them. He is excellent at facilitating discussions in class where opposing views can be voiced without becoming confrontational, even when the opinion being disputed is his own. Definately a good choice

Professor Arancibia is the best professor ever! Yes he will make you think but his discussions are not ones that you can keep quiet in anyways. He is so open minded and will always listen to your opinions...and he really does make you a better writer. Oh and don't write anything bad about him on here...he might be reading it... :)

I went into the class dreading all the essays that had to be written, but hey! it turned out to be a fun class jus cuz of the profe's enthusiasm & willingness to let students speak their minds in a conducive environment. Grrrreat profe; ergo, great class!

While I enjoyed the in class debates and discussions in Aranciba's class, I do wish he could have given us better essay prompts instead of just "GO WRITE SOMETHING". In class final was one of the best though. He's enthusiastic, energetic and a fun guy.

Arancibia is a very chill professor! At first i did not like him at all because he kept calling on me and putting me on the spot, but once u get used to him, HE's a GREAT teacher! You just have to participate in class. There's only 3 papers, no tests and the final is absolutely EASY! If your a hard worker, you will get a good great in his class!

Like the other poster, I did not like this professor at first, but he grew on me. His method seemed to be getting the students to think, in order to get them to expand their writing, and it was a refreshing approach. There were only 3 essays and an in class final essay, so the workload was easy (which is always nice). Good class.

If you want an A, Arancibia is your best bet. As much as he emphasizes reading outside of class, he reads aloud in class. His essays don't even have prompts; all three are just regurgitation of one idea: "[Story/Book] embodies the autoethnographic style by highlighting the conflict between assimilation and resistance as illustrated by [examples]."

He was a great teacher. I took this class as honors. If you need help understanding something, he is very willing to meet with you during office hours and explain concepts again. You MUST read the literature. If you come to class unprepared, it wouldn't be uncommon for him to kick you out of class- sometimes permanently. Just do your work!

Adrian is one of the best teachers I have ever had. His class is hard work, and he actually makes you think critically. He will put you on the spot for your opinion, but that's college. He was helpful when it came to the structure and topics of essays. He is very encouraging and interested in his students. If you aren't afraid of work, take him.

Arancibia is a great professor! I've heard many students complain that all they write about is the same thing over, and over again. Yet if the assignments seem repetitive, then everyone should have mastered the concepts he teaches. He gives you so many chances do to well, and the class environment is very relaxed. Great 101 instructor!

This prof is pretty good. He gives a lot of guidance on how to do the assignments, so even if English isn't your strong suit, you should be fine if you read the book and do the work. Personally, I think he oversimplified a few things in his lectures, and was a little overzealous in making his points, but he's smart, helpful, and very nice.

This teacher very much reminds me of the host of mind of mencia...I will never tell this to his face, but he does. Same personality also, more of an intelectual. Easy in class work. weekly essays, easy grader, and two at home essays. mid and final. most of time spent going over homework readings, probally easier and nicer then other classes.

He relates to students and knows our situations. Discusses reading assignments (which isn't a lot at all) in class and gets all students involved. As long as you read the books, you will be fine! He is fun and makes English easy! Take home essay for final. We had provided bagel/coffee parties during class! Always available if you need extra help!!

he really cares about his students. attendance is mandatory, & make sure that you bring your book every class session. this is a critical thinking class, so class participation is a must. he really wants his student to succeed and would go the extra mile to help you. very clear and thorough :)

If you're interested in developing your writing and critical-thinking skills, take this class. Constructive criticism is plentiful. A very smart and enthusiastic teacher-he knows his stuff. Very liberal, very outspoken, and not for the light-hearted. You will not pass by simply showing up or crouching in the corner! A great teacher nevertheless

Prof A's a good guy. You're almost guaranteed at least a C, even if you just do the bare minimum (show up, do a few assignments, speak when asked). He'll go out of his way to help you if you make the effort. If the entire class is struggling he'll spoonfeed you til you get it. Class is very relaxed. Participate and you're on his good side.

He is a great teacher because he teaches from a minorities point of view. He really relates to all his students and he makes learning a fun experience.

He is a great teacher. He rally wants you to learn and understand the material that is covered. Make sure you get the books ahead of time to avoid problems. Would highly recommend this class to those who are interested in the Latino perspective in Literature. Overall an awesome teacher.

I took both his ENG 101 and Eng 205 classes. I'm sad to hear that a few people had a problem with him because he has been instrumental in my education at Miramar. He will continually pick on you if you do not do the required reading, or doze off in class. Luckily, for most people, this is hilarious. DO NOT take this class if you are looking for an easy way to slide through English 101. You will NOT make it! Prof. Arancibia is an outstanding instructor. I took three course with him and enjoyed them all. He uses a "problem posing" teaching method which involves the entire class and challenges students to think critically/participate. He expects you to be on time and prepared; the negative comments come from students that clearly could not handle this.

Very helpful and fun professor. Every class session is a class discussion which he leads, and picks out students to answer little questions throughout. You NEED to read and be prepared every day, but if you are, the class will be a breeze. He explains exactly what he wants on the papers.

Prof Arancibia is really not that bad. Just do your readings, always be prepared and you'll do fine. For me, all the notes I took in class pretty much was what I wrote in my essays. I took engl 101 & 205 with Arancibia. Arancibia is an excellent teacher and a good guy. He demands his students to participate and challenges them intellectually. I am glad that I had the opportunity to be he student and if you are interested in learning you will enjoy his class.

Professor Arancibia is intimidating, but his class was not difficult. He will definitely motivate you to do your work (calling you out in class or speaking to you after class). I feel like I was spoon fed what to write, but I got an A so it's k. Also, he is very big on participation.

He is a really great English prof and probably one of the only REAL profs out there. He treats you like another human being, and there isn't that awkward wall between the student and the prof. Got a problem with your essay? Ask him. He's there to help. After taking his class, I can definitely say my writing skills improved profoundly.

I was in his 101 class taught from a LAT perspective. Sometimes he'll be tough on you [ie tardiness] but in the long run, it'll help you.I came in not really caring about the LAT perspective part,but it made the course more interesting and has opened my mind about many things. Great guy. Great Professor. He really tries to connect with every student and makes everybody feel involved in the class. His Eng 205 class is by no means an "easy A" and, real talk, students need to stay on top of their work to earn their desired grade. This was one of the best classes I've ever had. The professor is cool as beans and pushes you to do your best. At first I was like woh stop picking on me, but realized the subject was really interesting and that participating was key to stay on track. Professor Arancibia is cool but vey intimidating. Don't think you can go a whole semester without being called on. 2 oral presentations on two of your papers(one of it is your final paper). Another paper on a literary book. And an in class essay on a movie he assigns. Get your readings done. Don't ever miss class or be late. He will know and picks on you.

Very INTENSE. Hard grader, and gives little room for creativity or your own personal writing style, extremely regimented when it comes to course work. In class you can tell that he cares about students however, and tries to have students discuss events going on around the world which is fun. Definitely requires in-class participation everyday.

Super chill teacher. Come in ready to do in-depth reading but have a good time doing it. Really straightforward and easy assignments, all you have to do is keep up with the reading schedule and you'll do fine. Also has a great sense of humor

Participation is a must in this class. Make sure you do all the readings. If he can't get a heated discussion going the entire class suffers. Sometimes it's hard to follow what he says as he often drifts off topic about his personal life. It's very clear what he wants for the essays, if you try to get creative it might hurt your grade. Overall OK.

All around amazing teacher. He may come off as a hard ass but its because he truly cares about his students' success inside and outside his class. He expects you to have read what we have been assigned before we come into class and will kick you out if you did not, I believe its fair. He is very clear in what he wants. He is intimidating and not for the weak heart. If you are a shy or lazy student who cannot think critically or handle a workload, do not waste your time or his. The workload is reading in class texts and 3 very small (and inexpensive) purchased texts and wrote one long final essay which we did in parts throughout the semester. Professor Arancibia is a good professor! He showed enthusiasm in the subject and always showed that he was there if we needed help. Material was fairly easy to follow. He is a shotgun lecturer though, so come to class prepared and be ready to be called on because you WILL be called on. He was also a stickler about being late, so show up on time.

This teacher is the best there is. Always keeping the class on point and learning together. He inspires people to engage in class. You know what to expect when you come to class. There is no fudging you are not prepared, and it should not be a hard task to stay on top of your assignments.

Truly, one of the best professors HANDS DOWN! He really loves what he does and he wants his students to succeed. Do not be afraid to approach him and ask for help/advice. Be prepared to read and write. His lectures are ON POINT, get ready to participate because he WILL call on you. He hates when students are late to class so BE ON TIME!

Don't be intimidated by his tough act, he actually cares a lot for his students' success. Although this class was only graded by 3 papers, 2 presentations, and a final essay, I found the class enjoyable, due to his stories and personal anecdotes about the lecture subjects.

Prof. A is the REAL DEAL. He can come off as intimidating but he's trying to weed 'em out. Lectures are down to earth and engaging. Read and get ready to participate. He truly wants his students to succeed. What you learn in this class will set the foundation for future writing assignments. Follow his writing structure and you will do fine.

At the very beginning, he was very intimidating, but he really cares about his students. I was never really good at writing but he gives very specific directions. Taking his class definitely gave me more confidence and not once did I not want to be there. Go to class, do your work, and ask for feedback and you'll definitely do well.

Professor Arancibia is hands-down the best English professor I've had in college. At first, he comes off as strong and unpleasant only because he does not want careless students in the class room. I bombed my first paper, which overwhelmed me and diminished my confidence. He went out of his way to make sure I did good in his class. Take his class.

Arancibia is by far the best teacher ive ever had before. His initial impression in quite intimidating, but if you stick with his plan, it will be your favorite class by far. He is strict with his lessons, but he does this to make you you actually improve your skills. He will get very emotional with his students because he cares about his students.

Before I was not able to write even one paragraph but now Im able to write five pages which is awesome. Dr. Arancibia gave us the whole structure of writing with sample which help us a a lot. If you gonna take English 101 I highly recommend to class with him.

RECOMMEND! Almost no homework, only 3 assignments and the final. THAT WAS IT. A loooot of reading different books and fun to talk with. Class was small and he really cared about all of us. Understood when I had to miss a few classes for family reasons. Classes were just talking and discussing about the reading which was so fun hearing it all.

Prof. Arancibia is the best! 3 papers and one in class essay. He is VERY clear with what he wants and helps write parts of the essays. Assigns readings but they aren't long and they're interesting. I absolutely love this professor. I took him two semesters in a row and he remembers you and your work ethic. He is very helpful and gives clear outlines and is always open to questions and explanations. Do your work, pay attention, show up, and be respectful and you will do great in the class.

Such a nice person, really cares about his students. Show up to class and turn in all your homework on time and you'll get an A. Comes off as intimidating but is actually kind and willing to help. You have to write A LOT for creative writing, don't forget to do the big assignments at the end of the semester. Participate and don't be late.

You will be scared the first day. Don't worry by the second week you will no longer be scared and realize you have one of the best English teachers on Miramar campus. The usual papers and length requirements. He will not let you slack or not show up to class. Put in your best effort and you will succeed!

If you want a professor that voices his expectations, is personable and engaging, will give you the necessary tools to succeed at a four-year university and includes enlightening discussions on social, political and economic issues in lecture, take his class.

Took this course based on the Prof's score and it ended up being one of my favorite classes. Went on to take the ENG205 course as well to sharpen my paper writing abilities before transfer. He is a tough but fair grader and gives lots of help on all essays (3). Readings are interesting and his lectures are insightful. Took his ENG101 during covid made it super easy. 3 papers with minimal prompt, plenty of time to write and if you don't understand ASK!!!, responds to emails pretty quickly. Funny guy and is clrly passionate about latinx eng. Hardly explains what you do wrong in essays, just seems to skim over it. 2 zoom meetings a week, limited peer interaction.

This Professor was super understanding, especially during COVID. I took this class after failing my first ENGL 101 with a terrible professor, and he helped me remember why I love English classes. There's a lot of essays that you do, but he's very matter-of-fact and kind. I was going through a lot when in his class and he was more lenient about turn-in dates. Just talk to him, be honest, and be respectful, you won't have a problem!

I have taken Professor Arancibia for ENG 101 & 205, he has made English the best! He has clear expectations of papers and assignments, other than that the class is super chill and moving. Arancibia has a strong personality and can be hard to get along with. Bottom line, if you want to learn how to write and communicate, take his class. I was accepted to UCLA but graduated from UCSD largely in part to his 205 class. I'm not kidding. I tutor writing online as a side hustle and I quite literally use his outline method for my students.

One of my favorite professors! Arancibia is very clear on what he expects. For each paper, he requires a slideshow outline to check the student's progress and organization. Feedback is very helpful and very flexible and understanding to student situations. One of the few classes I am excited to attend regularly. Not meant to be easy A.

My English professor is truly a master of the language along and a wonderful caring individual. I had a family incident and missed a very important mid-term deadline but Dr. Arancibia listened to me and provided me a generous amount of extra time. He provides insight on not just literature but the process of university in itself.

Prof. Arancibia's teachings are very encouraging. He makes sure to take each step with you on your papers and has multiple days to help you with said papers. He does hold you to high standards, but that's because he knows that you as a student can pass his class with flying colors. His down-to-earth comedic attitude brings it all together as well.

I asked him on getting an A in the class because I got a 75% on the 1st essay. He told me to not stress about it, trust him on giving me that A, and to put in the work. He is a professor that wants to see you grow, he told a story of a guy getting a D on the first essay but gave him an A after reaching an 88%. Fingers crossed that I get that A too

Is lenient with deadlines, and is a very understanding professor. I was becoming overwhelmed during finals week and he allowed me to turn in assignments a day late when I told him about my situation. Just don't be unreasonable when asking for accommodations, otherwise he is chill. Attendance is graded.

I read all the reviews and from what I understood, the majority of us achieved an A. His class is not challenging, you would have to purposely choose to not get an A. You will never get a 100% but the class average is somewhere above 90%. Take this class if you just want the grade, otherwise, take your chances with another professor.

I made a rating on Dec 13th and wanted to say that I got an A. All I can say is just put in the work and you will get that A. My only advice is that you should make a friend or two because not attending a class hurts your grade and leaves you far behind. In the syllabus, it says that it isn't his job to keep you caught up which is understandable.

I have a love/hate relationship with this man and his classes. He's a good person with a semi-questionable teaching style/course. Lenient on due dates too which is nice when there are other things you need to do. He definitely isn't for everyone, though, as per the lower rated reviews.

Professor Arancibia made me enjoy English class-- I looked forward to interesting, engaging lectures with lots of information about history and current day issues. His essays were long, but you only had to write three. If you attend class, participate occasionally & come on time (attendance is mandatory), you most likely will get a good grade.

Pay heed to the negative reviews but as with all opinions, take it with a grain of salt. I doubt he'd ask for reviews. He's a nice dude and makes class more bearable by engaging with people and connecting with them. He's passionate and always willing to help. Some complain about his abrasiveness but just respect his time and he'll respect yours.

Very easy teacher, easy to pass with an A. He just has really bad ADHD and I had him in the morning so it was kind of a lot to handle. Don't get him in the morning. A bit disorganized and he grades on attendance. He is very nice though and an easy grader. Brought us beans and tortillas and stuff one time was pretty good.

There's a few readings to get through, some of which are difficult to get through, but the conversations brought up by them were great. A fun and interesting professor. Professor Arancibia is very kind to all his students. Your grade is determined almost entirely by essays and participation, so an A is very achievable if you just show up and meet the basic criteria for essays. He is a very lenient grader as long as you meet the basic essay requirements.
