I went into this class thinking it was going to be a harder class, but I did not think it would be this difficult. The material learned was so difficult to comprehend. He did not do anything to help students, and tests were on material we never went over.

All I have to say is if you're in this class, good luck.

He is very unorganized, assigns homework that we cant answer based on lectures or on the book, does the least he can, not helpful or caring, passive aggressive, likes to say, Thats not my problem, to any concerns his students have, last-minute change on how he is grading the class. If you want quality lectures, learn from Khan Academy instead.

this professor does not listen to his students' concerns or comments. he always says : its out of my hands" or "that not my issue" his exams are heavily based on his 60+ PowerPoint lectures. gave homework once a week that was based on things outside of what we learned and told us "do your research" take him if its ur last option

He deserves a 0 instead of a 1. No matter what, DO NOT take his class. He expects you to basically study the internet of biology in order to pass the class. Esqueda does not give a crap about his students and doesn't care if you have technical issues the entire semester, he'll still fail you for clicker questions you were never able to answer.

DO NOT under ANY circumstances take ANY class with Esqueda. He doesn't care about you at all and he will make sure you know it. Don't botter emailing him when you need help, he never responds in a timely manner. He completely changed the way the class was graded ONE WEEK before the end of the semester and ignored student's concerns the entire term.

Textbook was not used, we were told to Google homework answers, iClicker was used for participation and very unreliable, no study guides or good exam prep, vague lecture sessions that were LONG and tedious, and the professor disabled our chat function on Zoom for "using it too much." I would not recommend taking this course with this professor.

This is my first B in college because the tests were difficult. I would reccomend to read or go through lecture slides in order to grasp the complexity of biology. Esqueda never actually dealt with our class. All of our lectures were in video format (online) and done by Capco. Esqueda also never graded anything. He has 5-6 TAs who graded answers harshly. Have you been asked a question about microvilli of the gut? You had better write everything there is to know about microvilli, including stuff not covered.

Prof never engaged in the class. Feedback/grades given by TAs. Hint If you memorize the Self-Check Tests you will pass ALL OF THE EXAMS. There too many lecture videos per week, the only way to be successful is to manage your time well. This class has no remorse for people with other responsibilities than this course. Difficult but not impossible.

Is Mr. Sequels a bad teacher? If you said yes, I would have to agree with you. He is simply just not right for BIO 181. He would be better off in Bio Chem or a higher level course but not intro to biology. He told us that we had to be better after the class average on a test was 64% and lectured us on using our resources better to pass.

I used to really like bio before i took this class. Adrian is such a nice person but not right for BIO 181 AT ALL. Everything was super confusing and the tests barely related to the actual material. Class average on the exam 1 was a 68 and he told us that we need to be better. WHAT

With an average of 68 on the first exam and his REFUSAL to curve it, not to mention his blaming of the students for his own inability to teach, he truly leaves a sour taste in my mouth. If all you need is to listen to lectures and go home, you will do perfectly. If you, however, need ANYTHING from this teacher (a question, a date extension, taking a test an alternative time) you are doomed! He is a good lecturer but he does not care about his students. He also only does office hours by appointment only.

His slides for notes were literally just pictures so if you wanted to go back to the slides it wouldn't even make sense to you. He doesn't let you see your grade in the class until the very end of the semester. assigns SO MUCH homework that's due the day exams are due. And for our third exam he didn't finish teaching a unit and we got tested on it.

He does use iClicker so you do have to attend class. There is a lot of Cogbooks and some worksheets. I passed the class based on prior knowledge but if you have not taken bio before he sucks.

Lectures are powerpoints with pages of unhelpful text. He provides too much information and doesn't emphasize the important stuff. Reviews for exams (something worth most of our grade) are just iClicker questions that everyone guesses on since they didn't learn anything. There aren't any study guides! The participation homework points were nice.

Absolutely terrible. Does not know how to lecture and cannot answer students' questions. His lectures are so disorganized and are clearly thrown together. You cannot learn a thing and even if you try to read the book before the lecture, he strays completely away from that. It is an embarrassing class. Get a different professor if you can.

Hard to understand lectures when Dr. Esqueda wears a mask, has an accent, and doesn't have the microphone up. I have learned more from the people around me during class than from lectures/the reading. Its hard learning from a professor that is an expert in the field because they do not understand what it is like being "clueless" in specific topics.

You would think that an intro bio class would be relatively easy, right? Wrong. Dr. Esqueda is an intelligent man, I'm sure, but one thing he doesn't know how to do is teach. We speed through content at an Usain Bolt pace and the slides are useless. Our first test is this week and hopefully there's a curve because I think everyone will fail.

Lectures are boring and not engaging. Moves over material too fast. Did not pay for tuition to teach myself from YouTube videos.

Condescending and rude. The lectures are extremely difficult to follow. Not student-oriented at all. Picks what disability accommodations he feels like following. Basically, you will need to teach yourself for this class. Don't rely on the professor for any help at all because you will be treated as an inconvenience or ignored completely.

Professor Esqueda is very intelligent! It's clear he understands bio but is not the best in teaching it. This class is introductory, but he treats it as an upper division course. Tons of content will be thrown at you... you will probably have a mental breakdown. Class averages for exam 1 were in 60s. Take another professor for clearer explanations

I could excuse his insufficient teaching if he were actually nice or helpful to students who wanted help. His emails are often passive-aggressive and during office hours, he just couldn't answer questions in a straightforward way. Also very strict with deadlines and not considerate of students' situations. Don't know how hes still a lecturer here

Esqueda is a professor who treats an introductory level BIO class as if we are in grad school. He is condescending to students, cannot make a powerpoint presentation to save his life and mumbles his way through the lectures meaning you are essentially on your own to learn. Test study guides are "we are covering everything so study it all" STAY AWAY

The lectures & slides are very poorly organized; it's hard to know what the takeaway is. Attendance is taken through iClicker, which frequently glitches or denies you access. Lectures are dull and confusing; he seems very knowledgeable, but lacks teaching skills. I relied on the textbook to actually connect info together and learn something.

This class is for you if you have a PhD in biology. His slides are incomprehensible and useless unless you are following along with the lecture in person. He overcomplicates base level ideas. All homework for each exam is given less than a week beforehand and barely relates to lectures. He is also very harsh over email and feels unapproachable.

This is not a good class to take if you are not a biology wiz. The material is dense and the lectures are taught as if there is already an immense prior knowledge of everything being gone over.

His lectures are impossible to follow unless you understand Biology at PHD level. He just throws big words at you when you ask questions and can be condescending and rude. His Lectures also have nothing to do with lab and the lab TA's are on a completely separate wave length than him. Simply put, do not take this class you will likely regret it.

Dr. Esqueda is clearly very knowledgeable about biology, but he cannot teach to save his life. You will have to spend substantial time outside of class teaching yourself. Reading the textbook will be a lifesaver because he is not good at answering questions and is very unapproachable. That being said, if you can avoid his class, do it.

This is by far the worst class I have ever taken at ASU. Biggest mistake ever. The exams weigh the heaviest on your grade, so you better prepare for the grade drop after Exam 1. Office hours/extra help doesn't even work. If you go to the exam reviews, what he goes over is 3% of the material on the exam itself. Thanks a lot for dropping my 3.9 GPA.

This professor is horrible. He makes presentations that are 60 slides long and all he does in lecture is read through them and that's it. He simply does not teach. I am currently failing his class and have to drop today. Unless you have taken harder science classes you will not be able to succeed as a beginner.

Dr. Esqueda's lectures are extremely difficult to understand due to his lack of organization. There are often many errors and he uses a lot of vocal fillers when presenting. Other professors who teach this same course provide practice quizzes when we got nothing. As an educator, I hope he takes the time to recognize his flaws so he can improve.

I've always been a straight A student. The tests look different than what we are studying & he tends to use vocabulary words that our class doesn't cover, so you're left thinking, What?! Sucks because I love science, and Bio is my major. I took him because there was no other options, so if you have to do it, know it can be done it just sucks.

The lectures make no sense. We have tons of homework that doesn't even help you learn--it's just busy work that counts for points even though half the things we never even talked about in class. Adrian is not a bad guy, he's just very poor at being a bio 181 prof. Asu should have him teach upper division because I think he would thrive there. This class can be hard if you miss class. I would avoid it if you can, but he is willing to take feedback during office hours which is respectable. Tests don't line up with lectures at all.

Professor Esqueda does not put any effort into making sure his students are engaged. Each lecture is the same hour long snooze, mostly because he only lectures by referring to powerpoint slides while using complicated biological jargon. Tests are very hard and no review materials are provided. Overall, this course has been a proverbial ____ show.

Under no circumstances should you take BIO 181 with Prof Esqueda. The lectures are just death-by-powerpoint and nothing is ever properly or correctly explained. This professor has zero public speaking skills and seemingly spends zero time preparing to teach. May the lord have mercy on your soul if you're a non-bio or med major like me taking this.

He never proofreads or prepares before lectures so he spends half of them stuttering through his own typos and errors, and often gets his own class participation questions wrong. Be prepared to live in your textbook because his lectures raise more questions than answers.

Run. Trying to study for exams through powerpoints is useless. Everyone failed the second exam and he had to give an extra 30 points to everyone. Even the smarter people are struggling to pass.

The exams are ridiculously hard and if you email him be prepared to receive a really rude email back that does not answer your question (he will reply with "you should just read my announcements more clearly).

Dr Esqueda may be nice, but doesn't know what he's talking about or teaching. When a student asks a question, he always says he doesn't know or indirectly answers the question, which leads to more confusion. Moreover, the iClicker questions he does are unnecessary. When he inputs the wrong grade, you only have 48 hours to get it replenished.

Professor Esqueda is a nice person and very kind, but this course is close to impossible. It is super difficult, and the material is taught as if we already know it. The lectures are hard to follow, they are just pictures that he will talk about for 15 minutes straight. The tests are incredibly hard and require an insane amount of extra studying.

Professor Esqueda's lectures related nothing to the exams. no practice quizzes. lectures are super fast paced on a power point slide, and most of the material does not relate to exams. the day before the test he does a review lecture and nothing that he reviews is covered on the exam. I would recommend taking Professor Shaffer's bio 181 class.

The students never feel prepared for tests and I went into every test having studied but not sure what was going to be on it, the professor does not seem to care about the students. Hardly anyone understood what was happening in the class and most students barely made it through with passing grades.

Dr. Esqueda lectures in a way that is not appropriate for an introductory biology course; he expects students to know advanced biology terms without explaining them. I had a graduate student look @ the exam study guide and they said that most of the material they didn't learn until 1/2way through their BA. He doesnt let u go back on exam Qs to check ur answers. Literally no reason for making it that way but to screw ppl over. Also he sucks @ teaching. Makes typos and doesn't explain why they are wrong.

Has no clue what he is doing. Extremely difficult and complicated class for no reason, acts as if what he's teaching is general knowledge. He's unorganized, clueless, and frequently makes mistakes. TA's asked for sample exam questions, he gave textbook chapters to study. I studied the chapters provided, got a 52 on the exam.

Professor does not know what he is doing, most of his "teachings" are barely on the exams. He doesn't answer most of students questions when they are confused about a topic. It seems like he just reads off of the lecture slides that are definitely not updated with new information. He uses iClicker which really confuses people with their grades.

Buyers Beware!! Mr. Esqueda is a difficult instructor to learn from let alone pass his introductory BIO181 course. Lectures are over complicated and confusing, feedback for exam guides is totally ignored, openly states his reviews dont cover the majority of testable questions, roughly 1 min per question on all exams and no curves or extra credit.

This class made it almost impossible to learn. He expected all students to have prior knowledge going into his lectures and then his lectures did not even match the tests. It is not too hard to do well, but it is very hard to learn anything from this class. Take bio through Rio or another professor.

I loved bio and he's ruined it for me. He's an awful professor, doesn't know how to teach, makes frequent mistakes, and blames students for doing bad on tests. His lectures don't make sense in relation to the tests, doesn't teach the material needed. He knows what he is talking about but isn't very good at teaching it to students.

During the 2023 fall semester my buddy has taken Sir Adrian Esqueda's course and has indeed hated his life. My once outgoing and extroverted friend has since resorted to becoming a hermit. I find him to be fearful of this class because of the improper teaching on Professor Esqueda's part, he and i quote, "Need help I'm not f***ing Oppenheimer."

He stated, "You shouldn't come to lecture expecting to learn" He was unprofessional at several occasions and unwilling to help students. He combines 2 canvas courses into 1 so that he does not have to make a separate one making everyone's grade inaccurate. Blames students for low test scores when the class average was a low D.

He is a very smart professor but does not explain things well. He skims over things that are super important and heavily focus on things that aren't even on exams. It's a guessing game studying for exams because you don't know what you're even supposed to study. I gave up going to lectures altogether and have taught myself the entire class.

ABSOLUTELY f-ing terrible. One, his lectures hurt the head. It's like I'm trying to read Japanese on his slides. He makes no sense and the "notes" and tests are nothing alike. Everyone's grade inaccurate and he refuses to fix it because he's so lazy. He blames students for low test scores when the class average was a low D.

AVOID THIS PROFESSOR AT ALL COSTS. He just reads off the slides the entire time, and is overall just very boring. The material on tests is very different from what he teaches us in class, leading to low class averages. The average on the first test was 66 and he somehow found a way to blame it on us, calling us lazy. Ridiculous.

In all fairness, Professor Esqueda seems to be a nice guy and easily approachable, however my lowest grade in any of my other classes is a 95 yet I am fighting for a C in his class. He speeds through lectures and does an EXTREMELY poor job at explaining the material. You will need 12+ hours a week to teach yourself the material in order to do well.

Terrible proffesor, seems like a knowledgable man but his teaching abilities are absolutely horrible. No possible way to earn over a 50 on test even after hours and hours of studying. He uses iclickers which was also excruciating. Everything I learned in this class I taught myself. Do not take Esqueda at all cost.

Everyday I walked to this class I would purposefully walk in front of cars, bikes, the metro, whatever I could to escape his wrath. I absolutely despise Esqueda and would never suggest taking him even if it's the only class open. Will hurt your gpa and your mental health simultaneously. As I write this I am crying, I would never take him again.

If I could rate proffesor esqueda zero I would, in fact I would go into the negatives, I absolutelty despise this man, If you want to have a good start your college career never enter esqueda's room. He will shoot you down like its goal, I will never ever associate with this man again. He is the antagonist in my college career.

Do not take this class. You will be filled with anger and frustration and tears of learning absolutely nothing from his lectures. Would be a good 300/400 bio professor, but not 181. Expects students to come in with prior knowledge. Any learning strategy you have, will not work in his class guaranteed.

Dont. Just don't even consider registering for a class that is in the same building as this professor. If there are no other options available, just change your major.

He's objectively the worst professor I've ever had. He uses iClicker which is so miserable, skims over important details during lecture, and just overall a horrible teacher. If you value your mental health, find another professor, because no matter how hard you try, this class WILL hurt your GPA. It's impossible to get over a 60 on exams.

He was by far the worst teacher I've ever had. He goes off on tangents that are not relevant to the material at ALL. Be ready for iclicker and teaching yourself. He is also very sassy and rude when answering questions in class. His lecture slides are literally just pictures. And be ready for the homework to not be in the textbook or class. HATE

I would rather eat glass and crap it out and feel it tear up my insides than have to retake this class. HE IS THE MOST GOD AWFUL PROFESSOR ON THIS PLANET. MUSSOLINI HAS TAUGHT ME MORE THAN THIS MAN. Esqueda puts in the bare minimum effort as a professor and leaves the students to pick up his slack.

I hate Adrian Esqueda. I may have ended this class with an A but for the majority of the semester I floated between a C and a D. Adrian does not care for his students and is actually praying on our downfalls. This class gave me stress styes on my eyes from the hours I spent studying and crying. Avoid him at all costs.

This man is the worse teacher I've ever had. You have to attend his lectures(can be through zoom) and do participation points during class. All of this lecure slides are literally PICTURES, so when he says to study the slides for the exam. Theres nothing to study. Read the textbook, the exams towards the end of the semester were similar to the book

Don't waste time going to class, opt for independent study. Only 15% of the lecture is on exams. Read the book, take good notes. He uses iclicker but you only need so many points for full credit. Biology was my favorite but this man will quickly change your mind. It was 80% chem. The class itself is easy. Might as well take it w/ someone inspiring.

Incredibly hard, I basically had to count on everyone else failing the exams so that I could receive the 10 point grade curve. the lectures were hard to understand and the material was often wrong. the exams were nothing like the lectures and were worded awfully. do not take this class with him.

Almost lost my mind taking this class. Half of the people I knew that were taking this class failed or dropped. Study material given IS NOT the same as the actual exams. Terrible. Barely made it out...never again Bro

I have ALWAYS been an A, B average student. This class HUMBLED me. I truly believe I could build a rocket with instructions in a foreign language before I'll understand anything that comes out of his mouth. You will often find that what was taught in class is not of the test. His teaching is very contradicting and he's passive aggressive.

worst professor ive ever had. always aced, did well in bio class in hs. first test I bombed it, lost confidence, 2nd test harder than first. third test, I did so well, final wasn't that hard. be ready to be carried on the curves for test. tips for tests: study images on the slides, look up 181 282 study guides.

Dr. Esqueda is nice, but the worst teacher I've ever had. Just reads off slides, gives self-admittedly lackluster study guides (which don't even cover everything), and uses purposefully tricky questions on the exams to prove that we have a "higher understanding of the concepts". He gave enough extra credit, but had to because avg exams were 50%.

I am positively hornswaggled that this professor made tenure. His tests are nothing like his test prep, and he hides the questions on iClicker so you can't save them for future reference and studying- yet bases his tests off iClicker questions. I just took the first exam; I heard multiple people crying behind me. Pick a different professor.

Took my first exam today, the person who rated him below about today's exam is not exaggerating. I don't even know why I bothered studying. Esqueda is not only the worst teacher I've ever had, he's a very unkind, passive-aggressive, and petty individual. Absolutely expect to be punished for asking questions. His TAs and SI do all the heavy lifting.

If you care about your grades don't take him.

This man is hands down the worst communicator in terms of teaching information that I have ever come across. His issue is he talks in a way where he expects you to know biochemistry. He does not realize that this is a General Bio course. The University looks even worse for allowing someone like this to lead students.

This professor teaches off slides that are very disorganized in order. When tech issues arise with submissions for assignments, he is not understanding and will blatantly say it is your fault. The exams are very difficult and more advanced than any lesson during lecture or assignment. If you wish to pass this class, be prepared to teach yourself.

I hated this man. He talks reticent and is very quiz heavy. He seems to not care much about correlating tests to his lectures, making his test scores worse than other 181 classes. Esqueda almost has no care about his students.

I would rather step on a lego than sit through another one of his lectures. Every exam has a ginormous curve because everyone does bad. Exam/homework questions make no sense. Protect your peace and avoid at all costs.

He definitely knows biology, he just can't teach it too well. He puts all the work on the students by saying only 5% of material gets learned thru lectures (that was actually a question on a test, how much gets learnt via lectures). He curves the tests by ~30% because everyone does bad then dodges the question if you ask him how much the curve was.

its obvious he his very passionate about biology, but just can't execute a way to teach his students. he is a fairly nice guy though.

My distaste for this course generally comes from not knowing what I was supposed to learn. In lecture he would information dump and not explain what we should be focusing on. When it comes to exams it is very curve heavy. If you can get a different professor I would recommend that.

Literally take anybody but him. The best way I can describe his class is him going on a biology rant for and hour and you just happen to be in the room. I felt like I needed to take a genetics class prior to this one in order to understand what he was saying. His tests are heavily curved too. Avoid this class if possible!!!

Lousy professor with very little care put into designing class or being available for help. It's very obvious he didn't give a **** about this class. Lectures were awful, incoherent, and recycled from some other professor from a decade ago, and the homework and exams were a joke.

His lectures are not engaging, just images on a slide and he talks about them. He goes on and off topic but still expects you to have a photographic memory cause everything said in lecture "is fair game" on the exams. The exams are confusing with bad wording and always have multiple mistakes on them. Really unorganized and not great at teaching.

quizzes are 200 points while other assignments and labs are 5 to 10 points . he does not have all information you need to succeed in any of the test regardless of digits and etc. I'm very upset. studying for hours and using study guides does not help you do better on test. I feel like i should have taken a different course prior. dumb class.

Professor does not teach but rather talks about what he likes instead of making it simpler for his students. His lectures are a pain to understand when things could be simpler, he makes it 3x harder and more complicated. Lectures are not well planned and his mistakes contribute to the confusion.

Honestly this professor is pretty much setting all of his students up for failure. Lots of tests and lots of homework, all very difficult with little to no support for any of it. The questions asked on the homework don't properly represent the topics taught and the points are unreasonable. Why am I answering 41 questions for 5 points in total....

Professor Esqueda lacks compassion, is overly formal, and avoids engaging with students personally. They make no accommodations for special circumstances, escalating conversations and questioning character instead. As an A+ student at ASU, I found this experience frustrating and unprofessional. Avoid this professor if you can.

If you like to sit in lectures, this class is for you. I personal don't do well in lecture based classes. The test in this class do not line up with the presentation. Adrian also goes on long tangents about the presentations which make it hard to follow.

Attendance is checked with multiple random clickers throughout class. Each lecture has an absurd amount of slides that he more than not doesn't finish within the time that he is supposed to. Goes on tangents about minor things that will be on the test for too long. Tests are nothing like the practice exams, which he assigns two days before the test

The instructor had the proper knowledge and info on the course however, when he was on lectures, he was introducing the topics too soon before we get proper knowledge on it. The homework was another issue. Homework that was provided was with topics of a higher BIO class making it difficult to adjust to the actual topics at hand.

Is very knowledgeable about biology but just does not have the compassion or niche for teaching. Practice exams are barely comparable to the actual exams. Switched my major so I no longer need BIO 181 and took it for nothing. AVOID this professor at all cost.

Dr. Esqueda is one of the worst teachers/professors I have ever had. Gives incredibly information heavy lectures at a very fast pace and has no enthusiasm whatsoever. He will ramble about vaccines and random topics that he finds interesting for extended periods of time. The exams are always vaguely related to lectures and unnecessarily difficult.

A super difficult class for being a low-level bio. The homework worksheets were sometimes literally taken from higher-level bio classes. The tests didn't actually connect much to what was taught in lecture/what was in the textbook and were really difficult. He seems like a nice guy who enjoys biology but just isn't a good teacher.

For a low level biology class, this was the most difficult class I had this semester. The class is very lecture heavy and he just reads from confusing slides the entire time, which was super boring. The homework was short but not worth many points. The practice exams were rarely like the tests and he only lets you take them 2 times w/out answers.

I'm an engineer, I have enough homework as it is. I have to take this course as a science requirement, and for a first year level class this is comparable to some of the work from my higher level classes. This prof assigns way too much homework when the class is so lecture heavy, it honestly makes no sense. So, genuinely find another.

Absolutely avoid this class if you can. Lecture/homework heavy for a BIO181 class. Minimal help when asked. I wish I had read the reviews of this professor before I registered for it.

First he's really bad at replying to emails. i was sick for a week and emailed a lot asking if I could take the first test, the nxt week when i was back i asked him about it he said to come that night to take it- extremely short notice. You're also better off looking at the textbook and finding other resources to understand the topic.

Gives lots of homework, deadlines are mostly close to each other as well as assigned readings, but as for lectures, Esqueda is a nice professor but doesn't really know how to teach which can feel disengaging and boring. The only way you could pass this class is by looking at textbooks, using effective notes, and other sources.

Genuinely if this man has no haters its because i'm gone. you can study for an exam a month in advance and still fail. The average on every exam for my lecture has been a fail or barely passing (60%). This speaks miles about the professor. Before Esqueda (said in fear) I had a 4... #SDES (Save DR. Esqueda's students).

I am very sorry for anyone going through stress right now, grades don't define your intelligence, grades reflect a professors's success to teach a class, remember that there will always be other outside study resources you can take benefit from to succeed. I know life isn't perfect, sometimes you just have to learn how to get back on your feet.

I got stuck in his class because it was the only BIO 181 class offered at Tempe in the spring semester. His lectures are so boring and he is by far the worst teacher. He seems as if he does not know his own material and his slides are all pictures. His tests are awful and it does not matter how much work you put in because you will fail.

Tests are very long about 40 questions in general, there can be times where they don't match up with the homework nor textbook by unreasonably making them difficult, lectures felt like energy vampires and slides are terribly worded and long causing disengaging moments.

Its not surprising to see majority of the class fail, if study guide hasn't been given a week before the exam for everyone to review the material, but instead is given the last minute. It doesn't feel like learning, it feels like being rushed to obtain and cram everything all at once. The class structure lacks organization.

I have met one on one with him multiple times throughout the semester and still receiving poor scores. When I told him my fears about passing he said "You just need to want it more". immediate crash out. I go to weekly tutoring, meet with him at least twice before every test for one on one time and dedicate hours to this class. He sucks at teaching

ASU really needs to step up with this, someone who've obtained a PhD can't even know how to teach well to provide the success we need but more rather for status, lectures are boring and just basically reads off the slides. Please go find someone else who has more effective teaching methods that match your learning style.

Dr. Esqueda sets his students up for failure. It's nearly impossible to find a study method to succeed in his class. I've created Quizzes covering all the material, met with him outside of class, attended tutor sessions, and done everything and more that he recommends, yet it still feels impossible to get a good grade in his class. Please avoid.

There is no relevant between the assignment, practice exam and actual exams. In the exams, I saw the questions I never saw before.

I agree with you, most of the exam questions don't seem to match up with textbook nor homework, and the diagrams are quite confusing to look at and they often require more deep thinking and connections. The exam average is quite low though.

Lectures are incredibly boring and draining, but from what I know being in this class is having to teach everything to yourself, there will often be assigned heavy readings and quizzes outside of class as more of independent learning, if you enjoy this, then this is the perfect class for you, otherwise rethink again.

Overcomplicates concepts to an uneccessary level, it's very rare to get a perfect grade in this class, be prepare for looking off textbooks or other sources. But as far as for teaching, Esqueda seems inconsistent for any improvement areas to make learning fun and easy to understand regardless having a pHD for so long.

This man sets us up for failure, so DO recomend effective studying on your own.

Just listen to the other ratings and save yourself the trouble: DO NOT TAKE BIO WITH THIS PROFESSOR. I am a bio major so I'm not stupid and I do enjoy bio, but it is near impossible to succeed in this class. Tests are nothing like the practice/study material.

I honestly have had a very bad headache from the exam, they seem difficult than they need to be as if this is a master's level class which are extremely long and worded questions. Most of the questions don't seem to match up what was covered in homework nor lectures.

I got an A- but at what cost? He stripped me of my personality, self-worth, and the ability to make eye contact with own my reflection. Take this class if you enjoy suffering and the slight chance of academic success. You better pick a religion and start praying.

Dr. Esqueda shows expertise of what he is expected to cover; but, the course lectures provide an unstructured overview that focuses on his personal interests. When asked questions in lecture and office hours he is standoffish. If you are independent then you may thrive in his class if you can avoid talking to him at all costs. Would not take again.

Finals for this course were challenging, especially since the instructor muted all the practice quizzes, which made it difficult to review effectively. The exam relied heavily on memorization of textbook diagrams and structures, with little guidance on what to focus on. I would not recommend this instructor.

Do not take this class. lectures were so boring. He made it hard to concentrate and actually learn. He sucks at giving out announcements and doesn't have an exam schedule posted anywhere. He seems like a nice guy and nothing against him personally. I just don't like the way he teaches. Only had office hours over zoom.

Ahhh.... Where do I start? I had the worst time in his class. I just couldn't understand the content. Man was straight up reading off the slides and wasn't very helpful at all. I would go to his zoom office hours he would teach me how to take notes and tell me to do it in that way so i dont fail... he wouldn't explain content in office hours.

I found his class boring and I did not learn anything from it. He only reads from his slides in his class. His slides lack clear detail. BUT EVERYTHING on the slides is on his exams. He drops 1/5 exams. So if you do well on the first 4 exams, you don't need to take the final. If you actually want to learn BIO, take a different professor.

genuinely the worst prof i've ever had. exams are so difficult and he always has to curve like 30% bcs everyone does so bad. lectures are awful. he seems knowledgable but isn't a good teacher at all. heard shaffer for 181 is so much better, took him for 182 and he was awesome. was nice when i rescheduled an exam but was otherwise terrible.

Try to understand bro challenge, level impossible. Took his class in fall of 24' but I came back just to rate it. Not a lot of assignments, which somehow makes the class worse because the exams affect your grade that much more. No one passed any of his exams with more than a 70%.

The teacher is unhelpful, rude, confusing, and makes the class hard. he doesn't help because it's “spoon feeding” and has told his class since “he had it hard growing up, he's gonna make it hard for the class.” he blames his students for “not studying” when his class averages at an F. cgcc has had numerous talks with him and was fired from ASU.
