Took a couple of courses he taught. Probably the most engaging and passionate instructor I've had through 2 degrees and 7 years in college.

This instructor is the smartest man on earth. He knows everything and when you ask him a question he will leave you with your mouth open wide. The work load is a bit much because in order to pass this class you must read. He always goes off on a tangent.

This guy is great for cultural anthro...though he even admits there may be others better suited to physical anthro, if that's what you need to take. Very entertaining, pretty slack class, so sit up front if talkers distract you...

Dr. Novotny, in spite of very challenging material, is a very fun, friendly, generous teacher. Lenient in test scores and extra credit, passionate and fun in his own views of society, Dr. Novotny has it all to a T. Take him, baby.

Dr. Novotny is an extremely enthusiastic professor who enjoys what he does. His class is challenging but you will learn and earn whatever you put into the class.

He does not keep his personal views out of the classroom, and likes to discount & degrade people who believe in Creationism, and a Christian God.

He knows his material 100%, he is the best professor I've ever had in Long Beach, extremely smart, objective, human, fun, he has a very broad culture and taking his class is a great experience to expand your horizons. I'm very thankful for his lessons. He is the best!

Dr. Novotny's one of the best teachers around, he's very well rouded, he spent time in China and all sorts, this professor is very into what he's doing. His Honors class's awsome.

Prof Novotny gets on a soapbox at times, but it's only because he loves this field and is passionate in his viewpoints. Great lectures, never boring, gives extra credit assignments. A defintie find at LBCC. Take his class IF YOU WANT TO LEARN TO SEE THINGS FROM A NEW VIEWPOINT.

I was expecting a lot more then what i got, hes very unorganized and often times doesnt even talk about anthroplogy at all. He interesting at times and just annoying at others. It tends to be a hard class becuase most of the stuff on the test are strictly off the book, so he wont even cover it. Kind of a waste of time.

Great Teacher, very Spiritual, makes it fairly interesting to attend class. Very eager to impart his knowledge to whomever is interested. HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS INSTRUCTOR.!!!!!!

He is a brilliant man but tends to get off the topic easily. His lectures are usually very interesting and you learn alot about the topic that isn't in the textbook.

Gets off topic, but has knowledge. Unless this is your major, this guy is an easy A and entertaining for the time you're there.

His class is really tough, yet very interesting. You just have to be prepared to work hard. It's easy to enjoy class but it can be kinda depressing that after all your work your grade isn't as good as you would have thought. The not-as-good-as-wanted grade is almost worth the amount of knowledge you get and the fun the class can be.

While SOME of the other comments left here are true (the guy loves to speak his mind - but that's not a crime), he's got an obvious passion for what he teaches and tries to inspire the same passion about topics in his classes. If anything, you know you'll leave this class THINKING about things, and maybe challenging some of your previous beliefs!

Great online class! You have to do the reading for the assignments. Very easy to keep up with! Loved the class and what I learned!!!

I love how he speaks his mind. He challenged my thinking and I had lots of fun. He talks about his own real life situations that are based on some of the readings. Keep up with the lectures and attend class regularly. He also invites the class to events that are happening that relate to anthropology. He's a great teacher. I highly recommend him.

One of the best professors ever. I doubt anyone who thinks on the line of a conservative republican would like him, but that is only because he is open minded. I see some people have mentioned he is horrible and that all he talks about is sex, but that is not true. The man is a inspiration to any free thinker.

Professor Novotny has an open mind when it comes to teaching his class. I really enjoyed his class, and he feels strongly for what he wants to teach his students. He is not monotone,robotic, or boring, he is lively,enthusiastic,and radical, the quizzes and exams are based on the reading, and a little on lecture, so if you want an A or B, read.

I took his television class a few years ago and I loved this teacher, and learned much from him

Very easy class. As long as you attend class, and remember the terms, you will do fine. I was surprise at how easy the class was really, don't know why so many people are hating on Dr. Novotny. Maybe because they don't want to hear the truth. Ignorance wont solve anything. I recommend everyone to take this class, very awesome teacher. :)

Changed my life, not kidding and I recommend his class. HOWEVER, it depends if you are open minded or not. Although intimidating at face value, if you just the take the time to take what Novotny says in, it'll make sense. Pay attention in class, you'll look at religion, ethnicity, politics, the world, etc. in a better limelight.

Your classroom is NOT your forum on personal views. It is not where you mold salient minds into little versions of yourself. I had come into the class, jumped hoops even, only to find that it is taught by a self-indulgent, smug and self-righteous professor. By the way, my views do not differ from Novotny's and still I find his actions inexcusable.

This class was so much fun. He does get off topic, but I was never bored and he was always very engaging. He has some good field trips you can attend as well.

Very fun and cool. he keeps the class awake for sure. All you need to do is homework if any and reading the material is a must along with keywords must be memorized otherwise this class is a piece of cake dont be absent though!

Very interesting views. I definitely learned alot, but his tests are EXTREMELY difficult. You must study and pay attention to his lectures. Very fun class though!

I loved his class so much that I switched my major to anthropology. He is a major English freak when it comes to his essay questions. His tests are fairly hard, but if you read and study you will do just fine.

Hes such an awesome teacher, the classes literally changed my prespective of life. The class is ALWAYS intresting! there are 4 pop quizes, 4essay quizes, midterm, and final. If you do his extra credits you'll be fine n their fun ones too! Most of his quizzes are based more on his notes. Highly recommended!

Excellent professor! I enjoyed being in his classroom. He trully knows his stuff!! He is very devoted to teaching each an everyone of his students. I recommned him highly.

He is really funny and want you to learn your stuff. He cares a lot about the human condition i.e students. You can pass his class with a C with out reading the text but if you're and "A" grade getter, take good notes and read your materials. Be open-minded!!

Best professor I've ever encountered so far. Extremly humanitarian. Knows a lot and teaches from experiences. Must have text book if you want an A. I highly recommend him.

He is very interested and involved in current social issues and at times digresses. Is passionate about the human condition. He is an excellent example of what an anthropologist is. During his lecture if he mentions race he is not being a ****, he is merely commenting on the existence of races.

Although I did not get the best grade in this class b/c theteacher is challenging on his tests he has been the BEST teacher I have EVER taken at lbcc.. He forever changed my perspective on the world, he is VERY knowledgeable and has a deep compassion for anthropology! which makes the class 10x's more interesting..HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

MR NOVOTNY IS A GREAT INSTRUCTOR. ENJOYED HIS CLASS AND HIS TESTS ARE EASY AS LONG AS YOU STUDY. YOU DO HAVE TO READ THE BOOK FOR THE EXAMS. GIVES OUT A FAIR AMOUNT OF EXTRA CREDIT. HIS CLASS IS COOL I REALLY ENJOYED IT.

If your into ANTHROPOLOGY or not you should take his class. He make the subject interesting and makes you want to learn more. He's very open minded and "new world," very helpful, and resourceful. Just keep up with the text book reading, and you will do excellent. And he has these fantastic not mandatory trips. His way of thinking is FANATASTIC!!!!!

I am so glad I took his class. He's not a pushy-strict professor. He's really nice, funny, knowledgeable and very open-minded to different lifestyles. He's actually a really great role model and one of the most respected professors I've ever taken. His class is pretty easy, field trips are fun, just try to show up and pay attention: you'll do fine!

I honestly don't understand why people are complaining about the difficulty of this class. Its not that hard if you actually keep up with the reading. Just review your notes and textbook before class and the "pop-quiz" shouldn't come as a surprise. Obviously those who are complaining aren't doing college level work.

I love having class with Dr. Novotny. He takes his real world experience and uses it to make learning about physical and cultural anthropology more real. And while he sometimes does rant about his opinions on the world it always has something do with the subject being lectured. You do need to read and study to pass. But it IS college level work.

Novotny is my favorite professor thus far in college. His lectures are inspiring, and moments of shear brilliance outshine the times he may or may not offend some close-minded students. His quizzes weren't too difficult if you pay attention during class and glance through the book, and the 30 points extra credit means an easy A. Recommended!!!

Dr. Novotny is the best professor on campus by far. Close minded people, and spring chickens will not like him. Those who have a higher maturity level, and "life experience" will love him. READ the book, and you will have no prob Wish i could take the class over again! He is VERY understanding IF you DO YOUR WORK, and are SINCERE. HIGHLY rccmd him!

He is a very cool person and passionate about his subject, unfortunately he does not possess the attributes of a good teacher. His lectures are long winded and only slightly relevant. Very opinionated. Reading is absolutely necessary. Pop quizzes and pop essays. Offers 30 points extra credit. As an anthro major, I would not recommend him.

He does go off tangent a lot, but if you read the book and consistently go to class it will be an easy B (or A if you REALLY read the book and study his notes that he writes on the board.) He does offer extra credit throughout the semester. Good teacher :)

I have taken all of his classes and he is the best anthro teacher out there! He is not only knowledgeble and passionate of anthro, but has a lot of expirience. He is easy going, and as long as you show up to class and keep up with the text book you will be fine. He gives extra credit, and is willing to work with any student. Definately recommend :)

He is such a great teacher, and prepares you for the real world. READ the book and the material, his lecture is not always what is going to be on the test. It is your job to read the book and ask questions when you don't understand something. Do your part and learn supplemental material from him in class. He is hilarious and has a huge heart

he is a great guy and a great teacher. in class he usually doesn't talk much about the text but his stories and experiences are definitely worth coming to class. i had him for physical, cultural, and magic & witchcraft and got an A in all three. review topics he gives and ull pass:)

Dr. Novotny is a great teacher and I am super glad I took his class. His lectures are sometimes all over the place, but as a COLLEGE STUDENT we are supposed to read on our own. His lectures are not meant to give us answers to the tests. They are supplements to our own study. He is super funny and the best anthro teacher at LBCC for sure!

He is a really funny man. The class was interesting for me. He gives up to 25pts of extra credit and also gives and extra 10% on your grade if you miss nomore than 1 day of class. The bad there is no study guide and he doesn't let you know when the test or quizzes are so you have to show up for class everyday.

Dr. novotny is the best anthro teacher at LBCC, hands down! he is so funny and full of great stories. i really felt like his tangents were even meaningful. most of his lecture has nothing to do with the book but they are important to take note of. if you get the chance to take him, definitely do it, you wont regret it.

I have taken all three of Prof. Novotny's classes. In short, he has changed my life by changing the way I look at things. I don't always agree with his personal views, that he is generous with that pertain to the material, but he teaching all his classes in a way in which to broaden the way students look at the world. This is Anthro in action!

I took Dr. Novotny for Anthro 10. His lectures are long, but they're very interesting. His lectures make you not want to miss class and he makes you want to keep asking questions. He also makes you think of many situations differently. Only bad thing is he doesn't announce quizzes, so keep up with the notes and reading and you'll be fine.

Professor Novotny is an awesome teacher! funny, interesting stories. Incredibly interesting topic, I looked forward to class. If you pay attention in class and take notes you will have no problems on the quizzesmidtermfinal. The book was helpful, some questions on tests from book but most from notes. I would definitely take other classes of him

A very knowledgeable man. It takes real passion to make any subject interesting. and he does make his courses the best they can be. 100% percent recommended, a great man YOUMUST READ THE TEXT even though he gives plenty of notes and he lectures exactly whats on the test some of the questions are straight from the book.

Took for Anthro 2 and it was fun. The text is mandatory, you must read. But if you're like me and hate reading texts, I memorized the vocab from it and did fine. He usually does not lecture on the text but does test you on it and his lectures. He does not announce quizzes. He offers extra credit, take advantage. Goes over what will be on final.

I've taken Anthro 1, 2, and 10 with Novotny and have never regretted it. He may not be for everybody but that's okay. If you'd rather learn something valuable and not just take a class to get a grade, this is the man for you. He'll open the door to more questions and make you a more engaged and curious individual.

He's a very interesting person. His classes are fun and very interesting. He's old and has lots of experience in his field, he also gets really exited about any random topic and might get out of track, which doesn't really matter as long as you read the book and study. Don't take his opinions nor comments literally, neither does he.

He makes the class interesting by supplementing it with anecdotes, which I thought were always entertaining and informative (it's an anthropology course, everything's relevant). Everyone crying about pop quizzes - boo! He has everything posted in his syllabus, so, logically, blame him that you don't read. Numerous extra credit opportunities.

I couldn't have had a better professor for this class. Professor Novotny is really passionate about informing students about different cultures and faiths, hes very knowledgeable. He's also a funny guy. He lets you know a class session in advance about quizzes and lets you know whats on a test. Attendance is mandatory so you can get all the info.

Took his class in 1994. He is still one of the most influential teachers I had. I can still remember quotes from him and lessons I learned. If you want to open your mind to learn how liberal people think, don't miss this class. I didn't even realize I was conservative until I heard his views. Ask him about buying steak and lobster with food stamps.
