Main thing to know about this professor is that u are on ur own. Do not expect answers to ur questions bc he will expect u to answer ur own questions and his test are ridiculous. His homework or the problems in the book do not prepare u for his test. Avoid this professor.
Easy grader, if you want to learn real physic take this professor, hard trying is necessary if you want a A grade.
Physics 7 is a hard class by itself. That being said he does an excellent job explaining concepts in different ways when a student doesn't understand. Lots of work but it really does help with understanding. Read chapters and go over his PowerPoints and you will do good.
This teacher is like a driving instructor who teaches you parts of a car and then gets you in a car expecting you to drive on your own with the knowledge of car parts only.
Tough professor with high standards. It takes a long time to get adjusted to his rigorous teaching but you learn to think for yourself. Even though he makes the class hard, he's very caring and will help anyone willing to help themselves. Provides lots of chances to improve since hw and labs are almost 50% of the class. Tests are thought-provoking.
This man is an absolute GOD at physics. He explains everything clearly and precisely. He gives alot of homework and his tests make you cry. But in the end, he is a good professor.
Dr. Soldatenko is a legend.
The main thing is: do not expect to come to his class to get an easy A. His class is one of the hardest classes I have ever taken. He is a good professor who is available during his office hours and he cares about you learning the material. His lectures are really interesting tho
Hard professor, but good professor
This man gives a mountain of homework, but they are very useful for test prep. He is an understanding person who is willing to help as long as you put in work.
He is one of the best physics professors I've ever had. He is extremely good at teaching, and he goes over everything in great detail. He generally curves most exams and you will do fine if you put in the hard work necessary. Seriously, its a physics class, your not going to get an easy A.
The exams aren't worth much (13%-15%) you can still get an A as long as you do all the homework, tutorials, labs, and quizzes. These are easy points I suggest trying to score at least a 90% or higher on all the assignments because they weigh heavier on your grade than exams. You can still get D's and C's on the exam and swing an A. Great professor.
Great professor! He gives a lot of homework, but it is pretty repetitive and easy to look up the answers online. He really does care about his students though and is always available for office hours. If you put in the effort and ask for extra help, it is very possible to get an A.
Dr. Soldatenko is one of the best physics professors. He explains everything in great detail and clarity, i suggest you go to his office hours if you feel lost.
Even tho I got a C, I worked my butt off in his class to get that grade. Good professor who will make you understand everything you will be tested on
He is a very good professor, made my love of physics come back. He is a far superb choice than the other physics professors I have taken it with. Tutorials and homework will save your life on exams.
Dr. Soldatenko is one of the best physics professors at Pierce. Unlike some other physics professors, he actually teaches. His lectures are engaging and fun, and he assigns loads of homework, but they will save your life on exams.
Professor Soldatenko is one of the best professors for physics. He explains the concepts during lectures, so that when you do problems, they actually make sense. I advise you to use his office hours because they honestly do help alot. His exams are extremely difficult, but doable. Overall, great professor!
For those who dont study, well obviously you will not do well. Professor Soldatenko renewed my passion for physics, and hes an interesting lecturer and a cool guy too! Office hours will save you, and hes really understanding and caring. Dont listen to people to give bad ratings, chances are, they didnt study.
Heres the thing: He doesnt curve any of his tests, so dont come in expecting everyone to do bad and you will still get an A. Nevertheless despite that, he is a very good physics professor for 101 and 102, Ive him for both classes and I never had a complaint. Hes a caring professor even willing to accommodate you whenever needed.
This is a physics class, ain't an easy A. If you're a slacker and not willing to put forth the studying done, and work hard, LOL have fun failing.
LOL be prepared to have no life
If you are looking to pursue a career in physics or engineering I would definitely recommend him as he is extremely knowledgeable in the material and the test definitely prepare to be as knowledgeable as him(e.g. Tests are really difficult). If you are just looking for an easy A then you probably shouldn't be looking to take a physics class at all
EXTREMELY HARD CLASS!!!!! This class by far is the most difficult class I have ever taken in my life. The teaching method he employs are effective, and even though I worked my butt off to get an A, I learned so much in his class, and left it looking at the world a totally different way. Physics isn't easy, but very worth it in the end.
Professor Soldatenko is a VERY good lecturer. He makes boring topics interesting and he is funny too! Read the book before class and after class, to understand the material and do LOTS of practice problems from masteringphysics, and the textbook. His tests are hard af and he doesnt curve, so be prepared to study. Overall hard class, but doable.
I'm a person who loves challenges in the class. He is really polite. You should work really hard for lots of assignments during the semester. The exams are super hard. But at least you will definitely understand physics. I really loved and enjoyed his class.
Physics class is hard in general especially 102. All the physics classes at Pierce are set up pretty similarly. It is possible to pass the class even if you do bad on the exams as long as you do everything else. One difference in his class was that half of his exams are multiple choice which sucked cause there was no partial credit.
I thought he was a superb professor despite what other people say about him. He teaches you the concepts during lectures, but its on you to apply those concepts to certain questions. Physics is about thinking, not waiting for the answer. I failed the very first test but managed to get an A in the class by studying my butt off. Take him!
Soldatenko hands down, is the best physics professor for 101. His class is EXTREMELY hard, so do not waltz in expecting it to be some easy humanities/liberal arts class. His tests really pick your brain, seeing if you understand the physics behind everything. You seriously need to study though or else you will fail spectacularly.
Brilliant guy and an amazing teacher. The big downside to this class is how difficult it is! The tests are unreasonably hard and no curve, the homework takes countless hours, and the class really drags on after a couple hours. Take this professor if you're a physics major because he will teach you well. Otherwise I would recommend an easier choice.
He is the best professor for physics 102. I had him for 101 and 102, but he seems to teach 102 with more enthusiasm than 101. Hard class, don't expect him to curve exams much and if you study hard you should get at least a B. But if you want an A, you have to be at his level, because his exams are out of this world.
Dr. Soldatenko is one of the best professors at pierce college for physics. His exams are PhD level so be prepared to study your butt off in this class. He explains everything down to the smallest detail and he makes you like physics. Hes a nice and caring dude, but he may come off as cold and chilling. Totally recommend 10/10
His class requires a massive amount of reading and MyMathLab. He keeps awesome class control but not fond of his teaching style. No doubt he is very talented and educated but doesn't break the basics down enough. Will explain complex topics real fast and only once so too much unnecessary struggle. Too much material to cover as well. Cool guy.
Hands down the best physics professor. Don't expect to show up and pass because you need to know your stuff for his exams. His exams are very difficult so you need to master the material if you want to pass his class. Chill dude, very helpful during office hours.
forces students to scan their ID and room they are in for proctorio. Doesn't give feedback, refuses to work with students. Lectures are less than 30 minutes long but the session is an hour of being in zoom groups and nothing happens, even if you ask for help. Insane amount of work. Labs, online homework, journals, prelecture quizzes...
This class requires so much work. Tests are given on proctorio. Most homework is Pearson based. There are quizzes, projects, journals and labs. Prepare to spend a lot of time on this class. He just wastes everyone's time putting them in Zoom for no reason. Avoid!
10/10 worst professor I have ever taken. Strict on grading, assigns 14 assignments a week, if not more. Not considerate or understanding at all and rather rude. I wish there was another professor to take he has been the worst I have ever taken.
Gives limited feedback, so many many many assignments. He doesn't really communicate with his students. I have an A in the class so far, but I would never take a class with him ever again. He grades tough and assigns so much. I don't know about the previous reviews but this is how he is online.
please steer clear of this prof. for your own mental health, he overworks his students and assigns far too much homework. he gives minimal feedback to any work that you submit and doesn't provide any rubric for the assignments. when it comes to how he lays the class out online you can tell this is formatted for in-class work
Soldatenko is DEFINITELY not a joke. He assigns LOTS OF HOMEWORK. If you SKIP CLASS? YOU WON'T PASS. TEST HEAVY ahead, please beware! You will be in the 10% of passing and keep in mind that's nowhere near an A!! You're basically FAILING at the BEGINNING OF THE CLASS. STAY AWAY. You will have no life and any enthusiasm for Physics will die. /:
Based off of the past couple of reviews, it is easy to say that I don't think he is a great option for online classes, but I guess he is only good in person? He gives massive/ unreasonable amounts of homework. I would not recommend taking his courses if you have a hard semester. Nonetheless, he definitely enjoys teaching physics and is a nice guy.
a completely unreasonable man. He refuses to help his class by considering options instead of answers every criticism for how the class is run with "no". He assigns a ton of work, is you're looking to be taught go to someone else he makes you be in groups basically the whole time and nothing happens in groups. Also assigns unrelated assignments too
If you value anything do NOT take him. Absolutely the worst professor I have ever had. Doesn't teach, just threw us into groups on zoom and told us to figure it out. Gave an insane amount of hw, and was not responsive to any of our concerns. Half my class was failing and we even reached out to the head of the phys. department b/c it was so bad.
No extra credit, no curving, class average on the exam was below 50%, bad feedback, not understanding, a ton of assignments I literally can never get a break from this class I do the work every single day, and it's nearly December. If you ask for help he will just tell you to go to office hours. He will refuse to help his students.
Hell just throw you in groups during zoom and have you figure it out yourselves. He expects you to know all informations by the next zoom meeting. No curve. Way too much work. Dont let me start with those journal entries. Exams are nothing like tutorial homework and assignments. Youll fall behind in your other classes. Dont believe me? Take him
Lots of homework, when asks to teach he gets frustrated. I just want to learn. Listen to the other reviews because they are right. He assigns unrelated assignments, no curving, no extra credit. The averages on the exam is literally 50% he showed us as if its something to be proud of. Hes a real disappointment and that's coming from an A student.
All the reviews that say he 'gives too much work' are being quite lazy and apathetic. It's a physics class, so expect alot of work. For those that study, an A is possible. If you put in the time and effort to study instead of thinking about how much work it is, an A is possible. This is by no means an easy class, but for what its worth, I learned.
This is the worst class I have ever taken. The Canvas shell is absolutely unnavigable, the expectations are unclear yet draconian and the professor assigns more work than is acceptable for a five unit class. This professor lacks basics social skills and fails to exhibit any empathy for student's concerns or difficulties. Terrible educator.
Love how everyone is complaining about how much work he gives. Its a STEM class and if you plan on transferring to a UC/CSU suck it up and start working for your grade because physics isnt easy. If you study hard and dedicate yourself an A is possible. People like to take the easy way out and cry foul when things dont spin their way. :)
Not going to lie physics is a hard topic and demands you study it a lot. He gives quite a bunch of work but it is all related to the tests and exams he gives so if you do the work, you get a decent grade on the exams. He curves too so its not terribly hard to get an A if you average low Bs on each exam and turn everything in
for the previous students who say were just complaining, its funny how other phys classes aren't taught this way especially at other la schools. The joke is his teaching, just about all of the information I have learned has been on my own accord his videos don't help much and he doesn't help much in lab time.
I have never seen so many consecutive low ratings for a class. That should give you an indication of what this guy is like. I am an A+ STEM student. There are good, organized, reasonable teachers in the world. I have had many good classes and know when I see a bad one. Do yourself a favor and stay away from this class. You will suffer unnecessarily
To future students, notice the smiley face in the end of each 5.0 ratings. That's all I'm going to say about that fake news. With that being said, he is terrible. His lecture videos are 6-8 minutes long PER SUBJECT. Heavy work load. Very dismissive. Wont answer questions. Doesn't give lecture during zoom. You are basically on your own!
Rates himself - that's for sure. Malicious and retaliatory treatment of students. He just won't teach but expects the world. Gives brainless Pearson workload and awful labs that take up the whole lecture for NO REASON. Waste of money - waste of time. There are many in-district choices outside of Pierce, just so you know.
A TON OF WORK, pretty sure the positive reviews are self-writte. I wouldn't trust them and that's coming from an A student in the class which there are very very few. Gives irrelevant assignments like journals, refuses to take criticism into consideration. lectures are very short and prerecorded. Labs are only group work and nobody talks. A JOKE :(
I would like to mention the tests heavily impact your grade, there are only two but it does so much damage a majority of students are either failing or borderline passing. The class average on the first exam was below 50% the second was a little over 50% and he does not offer to curve. His study guide is 9 pages of single-lined questions, no help!!
Immediately after the first class you can tell hes lost all inspiration for teaching. Hes so monotone and doesnt respond to emails. He only gives 2 exams which could destroy your grade. He is not clear about what he looks for and constantly changes his mind. His project is so stressful and gives a ton of homework. Expects 4 weekly journal entry
Physics is not easy. I am a physics major and I expected a challenging class. You work for the grade you get and there is no other way to describe it. Everyone who says hes a bad professor needs to re-examine their priorities and honestly work harder. You wont survive at a UC if you complain because professors there are way harder than he is.
Taking a Physics class online is definitely difficult. You pretty much have to devote a lot of time to study for his class, but it pays off. His exams are difficult, but they really do reflect your knowledge on the subject. Super helpful if you ask questions. I would def take him again.
Would not recommend this class. Assigned books are expensive, no open-source or cheap alternatives offered. Class is mandatory and most of it is spent in a Zoom-breakout room in silence with other students. Tests are very hard. Class is not curved. It was a very negative experience for me. Try to get another teacher if you have a choice.
This teacher is hilarious that he writes his own reviews. He gives way to much work for this class. Doesnt care about what a student is going through and only care if you get the work done. He thinks talking about physics and having group work will somehow teach us physics. Everyone was clueless and had no idea what to do all semester. Avoid him
Worst professor I have every taken. Read the negative reviews I'm convinced the positive ones were lets say not real. God awful professor and the class is supposably even worse for spring 2021. Im going to another school to take the class pierce isn't worth it.
worst professor I have ever had. I usually do really good in physics, i took it at another school last time. But the way Soldatenko ran his class it was a disaster. It feels like he doesn't care anymore and would rather see his students fail. Hes rude, Out of all my other classes I was doing this class all day every day. :( writes own reviews.
Listen to the negative reviews. This class is was a really horrible experience for me, he will assign an unreasonable amount of work. It's like you have to dedicate your whole life to this one class in order to get your assignments done. Stay away from his classes, go to other schools. If his class is the only option, be prepared to teach yourself.
Soldatenko is a must avoid. I wouldn't trust his other positive reviews either. I took him in the fall and it was a nightmare. He is rude and unorganized, he often prides himself as a great teacher but the whole class fails the exams. How can you blame a below 50% class average on the students on each test in each class on the students.
Assigns a ton of work, but grades mostly on effort. I know I've turned in a lot of assignments that were full of wrong answers, but got full credit because I showed my reasoning. Taking his class online does mean you're going to have to motivate yourself to listen to recorded lectures and read the book, but I think his expectations are fair.
Professor Soldatenko is great. He makes you work for your grade, however, he is an EXTREMELY fair grader and does not give exams. This course requires exceptional time management as there are sometimes 11+ assignments due weekly. 60 journal entries, labs, tutorials, discussions & responses, projects, 4 video presentations & Mastering Physics !
I took Phys 6 & 7 w/ Soldatenko, and for the 2nd semester we did not meet at all. Without live lectures/discussions, it is very difficult to learn the material. His prerecorded lectures aren't helpful, and I relied on a private tutor to get through the class. Assignments aren't always difficult, but he assigns so much that I could barely keep up.
the class was online with no zoom meetings. he had pre-recorded videos but he gave the bare minimum amount of information, I had to learn basically everything on my own. Added like 2 extra video presentations in the middle of the semester. the only good thing is that there are no quizzes, but i literally learned nothing from this class.
he gives the most basic/easy example and you basically have to teach yourself everything else because there's no lectures. If you ask him a question, he will reply with another question "to make you figure out the answer", but doesn't actually explain anything. It's surprising that he's still allowed to teach when he doesn't even know how to
Not good at all and NOT RECOMMENDED!!
Professor Soldatenko is a great professor. He is very patient and helps. He explains everything step by step. There is a great amount of hw but no tests this semester. The homework is based on tutorials, discussions, mpa, and lab. Professor always returns emails and is available on zoom for office hrs. Great and kind professor!!!
This professor would not answer your questions rather would give questions about your own question. He would give you partial credit for your late assignments, and would not understand any circumstances. Would not recommend him at all, there is no tests, but there is tons of work for each week. Even when he knows you, he wouldn't like to help you.
Took asynchronous, 8-week class: Good Professor, very little contact, super generous grade wise 3-4 assignments a day, 12-15 a week (A LOT OF WORK/TIME) mastering phys = arnd 30 MCQ/equation q's a day 2x a wk, also 80$ 1-pg journal entry every day labs and 1-2 discus. (a wk) 1-2 tutorial (HW) a wk semester-long project is ok SO MUCH WORK FOR 8 WKS
Professor is chill but the class material is really difficult and way too much homework for a 15 week course
I promise u will be spending sometimes more than 5 hours at home in between classes doing homework. He assigns tutorial homework, lab homework, pre-lab questions, mastering physics, and more work for you to do. I had him in person so after a 5 hr lecture having to do more work was insane. Avoid him if possible, I wish I did. Decent guy, bad class.
Useless professor. Required text does not teach any physics, posted videos & tutorials are sparse and don't help much. He assigns so much work & grades harshly, making you explain HOW you did every part of every problem thoroughly to get full credit like you're talking to a slow toddler. It's physics. Rules & formulas are supposed to be shorthand.
This guy assigns a ton of busywork and has no respect for your time. He also literally does not teach us anything. Worst experience in all of online schooling.
I took this professor for both physics 6 and 7, both online. Although there were lots of assignments, it was manageable. Not sure what everyone expects from a lecture+lab physics class translated into an online asynchronous course, but the work is doable if you manage your time correctly.
avoid. wasn't worth it, there are easier professors.
This class was traumatic. So many assignments per week and the teacher was no help. All that was provided by the teacher to learn the material where videos explaining the bare minimum of what we needed to know and the textbook. Do not take this class, save your mental health.
Yk, I thought if I was patient then this class would eventually turn out to be challenging yet rewarding. It did not. 5 hour lectures twice a week, along with an obscene amount of homework. Professor seemed to have slight sparks of sympathy but did not care in the end. Miserable, miserable class. Not fun. Take physics at Moorpark College if u can.
Doesn't spoon-feed the material to you so please read the textbook section required before each lecture, didn't realize how important it was until the end of the semester. In-class assignments are tedious but Mastering Physics is a great resource, try to always be ahead in the course. Not the level of average CC class, so good prep for 4 yr uni.
If you haven't taken any physics classes before, be prepared to study a lot more than usual. He is very knowledgeable about this subject but lectures only cover the basics, so PLEASE ask as many questions as possible if you want to get an A. The homework teaches you a lot, so don't skip any of it. Very nice guy and approachable in and out of class.
He cares a lot about students who reach out for help but his classes has a crazy workload. Very strict on handing your paper on time (right before class). Expects lots of explanation on exam. Definitely go to his office hours, I learnt the most there. Doing all the assignments helps your grade A LOT. He shifts exam grades and gives extra credit Qs.
Solid dude, but really doesn't teach the material. He gives a lot of hw which he doesn't explain, then gives you groupwork problems in class. Knowledgeable if you approach, but seemingly allergic to explaining the material beyond the simplest, most unhelpful examples. Expect to learn most of this course from youtube, the textbook, or classmates.
This is the best physics professor I have had at Pierce. He really does want you to learn. Every physics professor on campus assigns a lot of homework, but a lot of it is made up of smaller assignments such as pre-labs. He mostly teaches physics 101 and likely has a lower rating because it is the first class in a series that is very difficult.
loved the prof! definitely challenging and requires a lot of self-studying, but idk what else you'd expect from a physics course. hw load is fine, make sure to use it (and the readings) to actually understand the material. office hours help a LOT since lectures usually just build off of the assumption that you already know the material
