good teacher, kept my interest. Very strict when it comes to saying your speeches. I got Cs on both of my main speeches for body shifting and hand fidgeting. There was also two exams (midterm and final) based on reading the text
Very great professor. He kept the class very interesting and his tests weren't that hard as long as you study and go to class.
Professor Toomey, overall, is a strict grade when it comes to speeches, ranging from hand fidgeting to eye contact to time limit of the speech. He assigns two speeches to every one of his Human Communications 100 classes: Informative Speech and Persuasive Speech.
This Professor might be a good instructor when it comes to his lectures. However, not all of the questions on his exams are based on the readings, lectures, and class discussions.
Took HCOM 100 and have never had a public speaking class before, this was my first one in college - Prof. Toomey makes his class very accessible and discusses things in terms of real world scenarios which makes things easier to understand. I went from being to the point of never wanting to come up in front of class to looking forward to it
This was one of my favorite classes this semester at Csuf - participation really matters as we discuss a lot of the concepts in class. If you are absent a lot then you will miss a lot , but if you come to class everyday you will get to do all the in class activities. I really enjoyed the clas discussion and the speeches weren't that bad
I enjoyed this class , unlike my other classes where the prof just lectures the entire time i got to be a part of in class discussion and actually offer my own interpretations of what we were covering. The teacher also really prepares you for the speeches with in class activities and you get to talk with him one on one in lots of the classes
You have to read the book. His lectures are a review of book concepts and not enough for his midterm or final. He prepares you well for the speeches, but be sure to practice a lot - he's a tough grader. For my first speech, points were deducted for time limit and eye contact and he gave me a C. There are also two easy real-life application papers.
Really chill guy. 3 speeches, but one is a super short introduction speech and the other two are near the end of the semester. He is pretty open with topics, which is awesome. Also a midterm and final, but those are easy A's as long as you show up and take notes.
I took this class last semester and found it to be really relevant to my major even though HCOM is not my emphasis. The class I was in had high energy and good class discussion. There are lots of chances to discuss some interesting concepts such as how we communicate verbally nonverbally culturally etc. I looked forward coming to class.
Class was fun - we get to do graded activities that help our grade every week. The major speeches were about topics we could pick ourselves within a subject - Prof. Toomey showed us examples from past classes that we could look at it, if you followed the same format then most people did pretty well I think. Lectures were interesting
He's not an easy grader, but he won't fail you if unless you completely bomb. Seems like a pretty nice guy. Sometimes his lectures get extremely repetitive. You don't need to show up to pass, but if you do you will know probably have a better grade. His tests are long and the information is mostly common sense, but term names can be confusing.
Much of the class we talked about real life situations which helped me understand the book chapters. We had small speeches where everyone gets credit for attending class. Then, we have major speeches but you can get points for the outline and visual aid and other things before the actual speech. Prof answered all questions and helped me 1 on 1
Very chill guy. Expect a speeches on open-ended topics that allow you to express what you learned about effective communication while still having the liberty to pick your topic. Lectures can get a bit lengthy, but he always finds a way to make it at least a bit more interesting. Exams aren't too difficult but require just a bit of studying.
Lectures off the textbook, but still need to read it in order to pass. Overall, 2 essay, 2 exams, and 2 major speeches. Gives an activity every lecture for attendance.
Mr. Toomey does a good job in delivering his lectures, and he always connects every concept to everyday things to make the lectures easy to understand. However, he is a REALLY tough grader on the two major speeches in the class, always pointing out the way we make eye contact, fidget, and say things like "um". Overall, he is a great instructor.
The multiple choice midterm and final (50 Questions) are pretty easy as long as you study everything on the study guide he gives you. In addition, his lectures are not boring. They don't make you fall asleep. However, he grades really hard on the speeches. For every type of mistake you make, he deducts 10%!! It's HARD to get an A on the speeches.
He is amazing and best professor ever . I was terrified of speeches and speaking in front of he class but he definitely helped students with that . He is the best and I hope to Have him as a teacher again one day !!!he is awsome !!
He is a chill and awesome professor. He is nice and gives good criticism. He makes the class entertaining and teaches well like he explains the lecture well and gives examples too. He helps you for speeches too.
There are a lot of activities every other class for credit that talk about each chapter- if you attend every class you will get all of them. There are 2 major exams which he gives study guides and in class examples, and then 2 speeches which he also gives examples and handouts for. He also accepts rough drafts of everything to increase points
Professor made class very interesting really recommend him. I did not like speaking in front of class and with his class I became comfortable. He is very laid back, this was one of my favorite classes his lectures are very clear and gives real life examples easier to understand.
I'm an Accounting Concentration, and it was Professor Toomey that made me want to get an HCOM Minor. I love this class. Participation is a must, and hes sincerely there to help you. Get better at public speaking and make some friends. Couple of extremely reasonable exams based on lecture/reading. Very willing to help!
Prof Toomey was extremely helpful; he wants to make sure you succeed. There are two tests based on lecture and the book, two speeches, and small activities that count toward participation. He grades really hard on speeches, so make sure to prepare for them well before your speech day. Also take advantage of sending him your rough drafts!
Professor Toomey is a tough grader when it comes to speeches, so greatly prepare in advance. His class consists of two major speeches, two papers, small in-class activities, a mid-term and a final. Also, make sure to check your scantron because I have caught mistakes before.
Honestly.. king
Really nice professor, loves to talk to students, makes himself accessible and always gives second chances (for a lesser grade though), exams not hard-- from the book/lecture, 2 speeches (grades hard on those), 2 easy papers, just make sure to attend, barely have to read
Really nice guy! Had him one time a week and hardly got any work to do. Two EASY papers you can do in two hours max, two presentations that if you prepare you should be fine, and two tests. If you want an A, study for the tests and do well on the speeches you'll be solid. Only negative is he repeats himself...a lot.
Toomey was a really nice guy, he brought us pizza, and good teacher talks kinda fast but repeats himself a lot. He is a tough presentation grader so be very prepared for your speeches they're worth a lot.
Very good professor. There is two major speeches which are informative and persuasive. Two major test. Professor Toomey is a tough graders so be prepare, he grades you on nonverbal movements and eye contact. To get an A in his class you have to do well on the exams and both presentation.
Toomey is a legend. I may have gotten a B, but that's my own fault. Don't think twice. Take Toomey. #ToomeyForPresident.
East class and easy teacher. I put in minimal effort and I got an A. Its 2 tests, 2 presentations, and 2 papers. I didn't put too much effort into any of this and I got a great grade.
Easy prompts for essays, and 2 presentations with vague topics that students can choose and have fun with. Overall a good teacher but get ready for a slightly tough grading in terms of how you present your slides!
The course is good for practicing how to be a good public speaker/presenter. As someone with anxiety, trust me this will help you improve. His grading on presentations is strict but it forces you to practice. He is v understanding, gives good tips, & brought us food during some classes. You get to choose your topics for presenting which was fun.
We had an activity and chapter every week, 2 exams, and major papers/project. You get to pick topics for your project from personal experiences about your culture. I enjoyed the class, the activities boosted my grade every week so I worried less about the exams - would take again for another class
I was most scared of The public speaking class that is mandatory (hcom 100) in my freshman year - the instructor made the class material easy to understand and is empathetic to students Afraid of public speaking - I got good feedback and feel like the class will help me with my career when I graduate
Gives good feedback and helped with my confidence. I am not a speech major and took the class because it is a prereq but want to take another Speech class in future because communications is really vital in my major of criminal justice. The class helped me look at what personal and cultural values are and how we might misunderstand each other
Prof Toomey is ok. He can talk a lot but he likes interacting with students as well. The workload isn't too bad, a lot of quick handouts for points & a few presentations/essays to apply what we learn. I'm not sure if it's because we switched to virtual learning but my grade dropped to a B seemingly out of nowhere. It was hard to get in contact.
Clear schedule of what to do with all asssignment and due dates - helped me a lot with my speech topic and public speaking nervousness
I am not a comm major but the class helped me with my psych major and also helped me with my job to understand customers and how to handle conflict in different ways
He was superrr chill , no class or zoom meeting. He had one midterm and one final and hw assignments each week which was just paragraphs based on your own experiences. You will pass this class
Good organization, everything is in the syllabus and every week we had a lecture, then an activity for credit, lectures were clear and made sense to the activities.
Had good amount of preparation time between projects and activities - the lectures were based off the text and also powerpoints were provided and study guides. If you miss something then everything is posted online for you as well which helped a lot
Every week is a lecture and one assignment. Super easy class. Only one speech which was nice because we got three weeks to work on it. One midterm and final which were multiple choice.
Picked our own topics and presentations about our own interests, instructor was understanding and gave good comments about my activities
super easy class. homework assignments are so easy and he gives study guides for the two tests. easy paper about your experience. one project with a speech but you can pick anything. he's great and the class is easy. TAKE HIM
Everything expected is very clear and laid out, the handouts have examples and you also get feedback on each assignment weekly. For the big projects and papers we had lot of time to prepare so it was less stressful to get ready for speeches. Most assignments are somewhat open ended but with a theme
I feel like he curved *down* our final presentation and exam. Maybe he went too easy during the semester (copy&paste feedbacks) and felt had to bring down the class average. My friend & I did great throughout the semester, including all tests, but our final exam grades were much lowered (by a similar percentage). And we weren't able to view results.
Assignments every week to keep track with the chapters in which you discuss your life and how it relates to the theories, I liked the assignments because they are not just straight research. Also, there were term papers, exams, and projects but each one had an instruction handout with everything on it. Overall I enjoyed the class for HCOM
You have some choice with how to do the projects for the course, which is something I liked instead of being assigned topics. Alot of the chapters talk about relationships and then public speaking. I am a nursing major but the course changed in how I think before I talk to patients and how they might perceive what I say
My friend recommended this HCOM100 class because I needed it for my major I was really nervous because the last time I gave a speech I did not do so well. You get examples of the speech materials and every other activity that is not a speech also helps your grade and score build up, I was succesful in the class and it helped manage my nervousness.
I liked the structure of the class, lecture and then also activities based on reading and lecture. There was also 2exams a paper and project. You get to choose the topic of your speech project, instead of being assigned a topic, which I liked.
You won't need to purchase the textbook for this class because the powerpoints cover everything. I bought the textbook and didn't use it at all. All assignments are based on personal experiences, so they're really easy to do. The midterm and final are both multiple choice. Overall, an easy A. I definitely recommend taking Professor Toomey.
I hate public speaking, but this class was amazing. Professor Toomey was very understanding and made his class worthwhile. There are easy weekly assignments and one short paper. There is only one speech, which is near the end of the semester, and there are 2 exams.
Nice professor with easy to follow lectures. Only one speech at the end of the class. Weekly homework that is basically free credit. However beware the midterm and final exams are weighted heavily and the questions on them are Extremely subjective and vague, even if you have read the text
You get to share a lot about yourself and how it applies to the class but also to outside the class, such as professional work life and also with relationships, every week had clear assignments with all the expectations discussed. I liked this class this was my first HCOM for GE but I would take another HCOM class again
The study guides will help you during the exams. There's homework that relates back to the lectures which are easy to do. One big presentation about a topic that can be anything of your choice. Prof Toomey is really nice and easy to talk too. Take him if you can :)
Professor Toomey was a really nice and passionate teacher. He cares a lot about the subject he teaches, and lectures are all very interesting and informative stuff. The midterm & final exams and final project can be a little tricky since they're the densest part of your grade, but he makes his expectations and outlines clear. Def take his class!
HCOM with Professor Toomey was the best way to begin college. I had his lectures online on Fridays and came with little to no stress. He is very chill & informative, I learned a lot about forms of communication. Assignments due every week but really manageable & flexible, with feedback! There is a final video project, important for overall grade!
Super easy with assignments that connect to your life and can be finished in like 10 minutes. The content itself wasn't necessarily that interesting for me, but it wasn't boring either! I'd take again because it was extremely low maintenance class, stress free. If you have trouble grasping info, he makes good connections to help understand concepts
BEST PROFESSOR EVER. Such an easy class, you do have a writing assignment every week but they're usually super easy and quick. Class only on Mondays since Wednesdays he left as work days. Only one paper and one video project at the end of the semester. He's super nice and accessible outside of class and gives really good feedback. Take his class!!
Class was a good pace, something due every week so that you read and keep up with the chapters. One book required and they relate to the powerpoints and lectures. The activities are based on the reading and lectures. When I had a question it was explained well. I learned about communication skills for relationships and also travelling, good class.
I liked the content in the class, lots of it is about everyday life and how to improve communication in relationships and also professionally. Clear assignments every week and a project and paper and exams about the book, read the chapters and the activities and paper are based on that and the lectures.
He is honestly so sweet and so kind to us. I took his Friday class online and he only lectures for about an hour and the rest of the time you do the work that is due on Sunday which is really easy. The material is not that heavy and honestly you do learn a thing or two about yourself and others. Do your work and put effort! Easy A!
For most of the activities you can choose your own examples of how the chapters apply to examples in life. You get points every week that help build up the participation for the class. Exams and papers based on the textbook and lectures, good COM100 course and helps you understand the theories.
As a communications class, he listens to your opinions and lets you talk about how your life connects with the lecture and text. Sometimes other people would share information about the concepts and their views, if it is quiet then he will use his own examples that apply what we are learning. Each week is a component of the textbook and lecture.
Have taken other communication classes at other schools, I liked this HCOM100 class, it was an intro to communication and you cover the basic principles in the book chapter and through lecture, there is activities every week but you have time to do them and and also ask questions if you need anything, I liked the class .
In this class everything is laid out weekly and is pretty easy to understand, every week we did a chapter and there is also activities, tests, papers, and project, but each item had a handout and for the major things due you get a few weeks to work on the major project, and can ask questions to revise things before it is due, teacher was nice.
My favorite part of class was the activities as you get to write about yourself but how it relates to the theories in the book. There was a handout for each big thing due in class and also handouts for each activity. The study guide and powerpoint chapters helped me for the class provided online.
No pop quizzes or anything unexpected, teacher was responsive to my questions and also helped me with rough drafts of the paper. The lectures are based on the reading so you read a new chapter every week with an activity, after it is explained in class. I basically wrote about my family and disagreements at work for the chapters each week.
Great professor! Understanding and gives reasonable amount of work. No complaints, the work is straight to the point and manageable.
Attendance isn't actually monitored through zooms, but you do need to complete assignments before your 2nd class of the week ends (or within 2 days). Very flexible & understanding. 2 exams, a 3-page paper, & a video project. Reasonable project deadlines. I found the final to be more difficult than the midterm despite studying more for the former.
Very chill professor, isn't harsh on grading and you know exactly what he's looking for. Weekly assignments as well as an outline and video for the final project. I believe there were 3 tests, they're relatively easy if you study for them! A lot of it is technical and based off of definitions & applications.
The best professor I have had so far. His lectures are engaging, he is always open to answering questions, provides great feedbacks, and gives extra points. His tests were a bit hard, but overall, the class was super fun and engaging! He is very inspirational and friendly all the time
Exams are hard, but that is because this course is very weird. Teacher is amazing and teaches really well. He requires that you go to the writing center at least once. Good tecaher
Such a great professor! I took an online class where we only met every Fridays for 2 hours. Take notes on his lectures, tests were based on what he says in addition to the slides. We had an easy writing assignment once a week, a major paper, and a project towards the end. He is very understanding and will respond to emails!
Guy is so chill. Nice dude he's good at teaching, has a cool background and is understanding. Assignments are very straight forward and lectures aren't super long but they make sense and he'll ask questions throughout the lecture to keep everyone engaged. If I had to take a class with him again I definitely would!
Just weekly tasks very easy never even showed to any of the classes and passed with a A
Every week is pretty clear, there is usually a chapter lecture and then a chapter activity, the activity is based on the book reading and also the powerpoint. Teacher was responsive and answered my questions in class and also through email. Overall enjoyed the class and learned about relationships and how to better communicate.
I liked the class and the book, the theme of the book and class is to learn about how people communicate with each other in relationships but also at work and school. There are themes like conflict, nonverbal communication, how to be informative, and how advertising effects people and also how to improve communication when completing tasks.
This course was really easy! He does use a textbook, however I did not purchase it. It essentially helped review the lectures but he posts the lectures anyway! A lot of the assignments are worth minimal points so make sure you do decent on the midterm/final. He's so sweet and very helpful. If you need help, don't be afraid to reach out to him!
This class is easy, but I could not pay attention for the life of me. Lectures felt really repetitive and self explanatory. There's 2 multiple choice exams, lots of simple hw assignments, and 1 final project. If I could go back I don't think I would have chosen this class.
Professor was helpful with activities and questions, during class and through email. I liked some of the chapters more like the relationship and conflict chapters, the lectures are based on the textbook and powerpoint summaries. Also during class you can ask questions or tell stories that the chapter is talking about.
Professor Toomey's class was extremely enjoyable throughout the semester I had him. I took his asynchronous Zoom class and his lectures were very interesting, he's very nice, laid-back, and cracks great jokes. Everything was online including exams. I'd 100% recommend him for HCOM, he's extremely accommodating, flexible, and understanding :)
A required GE class, Professor Toomey made the subject interesting and gave good examples of how communication is important in other majors and careers, there are different readings in the text and then assignments based on the reading and lecture. Some of the chapters that I liked were conflict, nonverbals and perceptions of communication.
Super nice and caring teacher, his lectures are interesting but the point of the class is boring. Only one assignment due at the end of each week for his zoom class, and he's always open to questions and is overall understanding. Lectures are mandatory to join as they're not recorded, but it's max an hour and it's honestly a really easy class.
Lots of the ideas in the class and textbook are about everyday life, the text is pretty easy to follow and the lecture and powerpoints had good examples and stories . For assignments you can write about how the chapter and how your relationships or school life relates to the ideas in the class. Teacher was caring and explained class info well.
One assignment a week should take no more than 15 minutes. zoom class once a week to go over units (optional). multiple choice exams online. turned in assignment late on accident hes very understanding good person.
I enjoyed the class content and the lectures and power point chapters, the teacher helped me understand the activities and also was open to answering questions and for other students to share during lectures. If you want you can also turn in assignments directly or also ask for feedback or rough drafts for the bigger activities which helped me.
He is very chill, but exams are difficult. You will have to study and be ready to pay attention to his lectures. You have to understand the materials to answer the exam questions. 50 questions all m.c. There will be a quick write each week, but not worth many points. 1 midterm, 1 final exam, 1 paper, 1 project.
1 hour zoom lecture per week. Not that many assignments. He's chill. Recommend, if you want a easy class.
