Adriane is the best teacher. I went in every week to her office hours. She was extremely helpful. It's the kind of class where you come in not interested in pursuing a study in the subject, but leave wanting to because of the teacher.
Adriane is great because she is enthusiastic about her job and she conveys this through her teaching. She went out of her way to go on field trips and to make the class accessible. Sometimes the material can be tough for non-science majors but just go to office hours!
Awesome teacher, really helpful and interested/enthusiastic in her work. I hardly ever glanced up at the clock
VERY caring instructor who LOVES astronomy. She knows her stuff. Good lectures, sometimes she proves that she loves astronomy too much and gets overly passionate about the material. She wants her students to do well and gives plenty of opportunities to improve grades. Recommended!
Adriane's class was a very special experience for me and my girlfriend. She is one of the best teachers I have ever had the fortune of coming across in my life. Adriane really knows how to help you learn everything there is to know about astronomy and she really inspires people. A wonderful person.
Astronomy didn't appeal to me until I took the class. Never before had I had a prof who devoted so much time in office hours and outside (fieldtrips). Prof Steinacker allows for students to demonstrate their creativity with essays, but she also guides through the difficult math formulae & concepts
Adriane is awesome. Her accent is adorable, too, and she is a GREAT cook!

Very excited about astronomy. Knows her stuff. Classes get boring sometimes. Sections are very helpful, although not madatory. She plans many field trips to get her students interested. Very passionate about the subject..explains why she works for some NASA research..
Her class was boring at times but she was very enthusiastic about the material. She had optional field trips for those that were interested in going out and seeing some stars. Not the easiest GE credit you can take, but it was interesting.
Very enthusiastic and passionate about the material. She does everything possible to help all students, including numerous optional fieldtrips and staying after class for one-on-one tutoring. She really knows her stuff, and was able to get me (a non-science/math major) into astronomy. Not the easiest class in the world, but highly recommended.
Obviously cares about the material but is a bad lecturer. She expects you to know what is on her slides, but goes through them way too fast and then will spend 10 minutes on a slide that's just a picture of space. She also has an unintelligible accent that gets really annoying after a while. She's really lenient though, so I guess that's something.

Good teacher
Awesome teacher, helpful and available. Communicative, nice, funny, HOT, and yeah, a great cook. I love her to death! So damn smart, too, forgot that part. She's brilliant.
This was by far the best professor I've ever had in the science department. She is extremely helpful in making sure you understand all the concepts discussed in and out of class. Another fun part of her class was all the feild trips she'd have throughout the quarter to go out and see the stars/moon/planets. If you have the chance I'd also go to the section she teahces. She is overall a great and extremely helpful professor.
Unbelievably caring professor. She will do anything to help you understand the information, even if you’re not a math science person… like me. GO TO HER SECTION! She explains the homework and even does similar examples. Her office hours are helpful as well. Who knew that anyone could be so passionate about the universe? ;-)
This class was an amazing experience, and I don't think it would have been the same with a different teacher. Adriane was the best teacher I could have had for my first semester of college. She was so nice, understanding, and HELPFUL. The material was confusing but soo interesting. I find myself enthralled by the night sky every night. Recomm
She was aight. Really interesting class but goes to fast through her lectures. Really nice and caring but gotz to slow down while lecturing.
She is presents concise and clear lectures; she is willing to help anyone. mxm
Was an excellent and very clear lecturer. I have no idea what people are talking about when they say she is unintelligible. She obviously is very passionate about her subject. Tests and homework were generally easy and not hard to study for.
Adriane was a wonderful professor, who really put a lot of effort into her teaching. You could tell that she loved the subject and wanted you to love it just as much, and she did an exceptional job teaching the material to her class. I would recommend that anyryone who has the chance, take this professor...you'll learn so much and ejoy every moment
Her voice was a little too soft and a little too easy to tune out. I also got an incredibly poor review from her, despite her seeming understanding (I had a death in the family during her class). Tests are extremely difficult; some questions didn't seem like we we'd actually covered the material.
Very excited about the material, and always very willing to help. Lectures move at a very fast pace, and at times very difficult to understand.
Very enthusiastic about astronomy, and willing to help you out if you ask. Sometimes the material is confusing or boring, but overall it wasn't too bad.
Very approachable, and extrememly enthusiastic.
Very enthusiastic and extremely approachable.
I admit it's boring and I fell asleep.Yet she puts a lot of time and effort; her enthusiasm made me stick with it. The homework is reasonable and she holds her own discussion section. Exams are very fair; they're a lot like her examples and hmwk. She truly cares about the students so much. Refreshing compared to 6A with Zack. 6B was my fav. class!
Very helpful
Steinacker is this adorable tiny little science person and she's one of those professors where you can't help but be interested in the topic because they're so into it. She's great!
She is great! very helpul and enthusiastic about her topic. One of my favorite teachers at uscs!
Adrianne is so excited to teach her students. She is a wonderful teacher with a million examples and analogies to help you learn, and ALWAYS available to help students. Class was usually pretty funny- complete with songs, awesome photographs, and model planets. Take one of her classes, they are inspiring.
Excellent professor! If you have the opportunity to take her course, do it!
Professor Steinacker is AMAZING. I loved Overview of the Universe. She plays music during lecture and thinks of the most amazing examples to explain astronomy. Her love of the subject really shows. It's a difficult class, go to lecture every day, but you won't regret it! A very thoughtful professor. And go to section, especially hers!
awesome teacher. very helpful in all ways possible
Good teacher. very clear. sections not mandatory but helpful. I figured that out the last 3 sections. Easy class. almost no math involved.
Absolutely terrible teacher. Class is VERY VERY BORING, she teaches concepts in an inept confusing manner, and more often than not, they are wrong. She is the worst professor I have ever had. WORST. this is not simply hyperbole, she is definitely the worst.
Love her class, material, teaching methods, and her as a person overall!
Very hard material! but awesome teacher. She tries very hard to help you understand, and is so passionate for the information. Tests were curved, and not TOO hard. Had never taken a astro class before and did pretty well. GO to class and TA sections for hw help!
One of the best teachers Iʻve ever had! Creative, engaging, enthusiastic, approachable, unforgettable! Take any class you can with her.
She is by far one of the best professors that I have ever encountered. Her passion for the subject really shows, and she is always willing to help out a student in need. The lectures are pretty entertaining with her use of props and music. I found the class overall very enjoyable. I would love to have her again as a professor.
Adrianne is a very helpful and enthusiastic professor. However, her lectures were all over the place, filled with a lot of fluff and information that no one was sure whether or not they needed to know. When we were finally were given a list of concepts, it was completely overwhelming. Not worth it for just the GE's!
She is a very nice! If you attend her section and get to know her, the class will be much better and easier. If you are taking this class for your 'Q' G.E. be prepared to work. It is not an easy A. The test are about half astronomy theory and half math. She makes the subject interesting and which makes the math bearable. Engaging slides. Take class
Her lecture slides were quite scattered, but her verbal explanation was usually crystal clear. Adrianne is very enthusiastic about Astronomy and is eager to help out students. Homework load was reasonable. Tests were long, but if you keep up with the homework the exams should be cake.
She is an amazing person. She is teaching you about something that will never help you in life, but its more of the way she teaches you that will help you. She gives you a lot of slack and you just have to be responsible. Sections are optional, but GO. The people who grade you are the TA's. If they know you, that helps .She teaches one too
Steinacker is amazing. One of the best professors I've ever had. She consistently bends over backwards to help and accommodate students. She is excellent in her field and knows the material amazingly well. She is extremely friendly, and passionate about teaching.
Professor Steinacker is such a wonderful, amazing teacher. She is very kind and patient with students, even when they leave class loudly in the last 5 minutes of lecture. She is so passionate about astronomy and genuinely wants to help everyone pass the class.
She is such an amazing teacher who is sincerely passionate about her subject. She genuinely cares for all of her students and will help you out in any way possible. Her material was really interesting; she made sure to include tons of amazing astronomical phenomenas and offered star gazing outside of class. An absolutely amazing class and teache
I recommend everyone to take this class.
She is an amazing teacher but the material is not easy. Be warned, if you don't have a physics or calculus background this class will become difficult.
Prof. Steinacker is by far the best teacher that I have ever had. She makes the material clear and interesting, and she is extremely considerate of her students. One of the nicest people that I have ever met. I love having classes with her.
She just loves space and the stars. Lots of people just take the class for the gen ed but she tries to make it interesting. There is plenty of extra credit offered and the assignments are worth doing to practice for the midterm and final.
She is a very very nice person. There was more math than I had expected, but she gives you the formulas for exams. Slides are kinda crazy but they're fun and interesting. She is oh so helpful, always, and if you do well on homework you should be good.
Excellent teacher! She is truly passionate about the subject and cares for her students. Course material is very interesting and she has put a lot of thought into the class. I highly recommend any of her classes and be sure to go to office hours and talk to her!
Excellent teacher! She is truly passionate about the subject and cares for her students. Course material is very interesting and she has put a lot of thought into the class. I highly recommend any of her classes and be sure to go to office hours and talk to her!
Excellent teacher! She is truly passionate about the subject and cares for her students. Course material is very interesting and she has put a lot of thought into the class. I highly recommend any of her classes and be sure to go to office hours and talk to her!
Extremely helpful, and well-educated in her field. The class becomes difficult quickly if you lack a physics & calc background, but she does everything possible to help you. Very understanding, cute, and enthusiastic in the field. The class can be difficult, but it's worth your while, and she makes it fun. Bearable homework/tests. She's great!
Plus side: she is enthusiastic, smart, helpful, really wants students to succeed and does not make you blow a circuit trying to perform lengthy derivations and complex reasoning style problems. Emphasizes concepts not calculations. Negatives: unorganized, tries to cover too much too fast, jumps around a lot during lecture, isn't always clear.
Really great teacher. Her lectures are interesting and go into great depth. She also did about one mini-experiment in class per week. My only complaint is that her handwritten notes were hard to read.
Awesome teacher, made me wish I enjoyed the subject! Comes to class every day with excitement and joy for the subject! I would only take this class with her! Had her own discussion section and that was extremely helpful to get to know her and for further clarity on the topic. One Midterm and one final, masteringphysics homework throughout.
She piled a ton of work at the end of the quarter which caused many students to do a mad rush to complete the work, while jugging other classes. Her office hours were very inflexible, and she barely answered emails. She also did not stick with the syllabus, spending a lot of time on one subject area, leading to a rush to learn everything else.
Adriane is a wonderful professor - her lectures are organized and clear, even when the math seems foreign. She truly cares about the progress of her students, not in due dates. This led to most students procrastinating and trying to finish a quarter's worth of homework in the last two weeks! Their fault =P
Other professors should take a cue from Adrianne. She is enthusiastic, really cares about students success, leads her own discussions, knows her stuff and goes out of her way to be available and helpful. She focuses on concepts instead of derivations and lengthy mathematical computations. Tests are straightforward. Mastering physics used.
6A with this lady in the summer was the best decision ever. On her 2nd midterm, she curved the test so that 30 points was a perfect score while you can get 20 points more(up to 50), as extra credit.
Pros: Adrianne is funny, smart and a good teacher. She knows her stuff and is always willing to help you in office hours. Cons: she goes TOO FAST through the material and the tests and homeworks do not relate to the lectures. If you are taking her class for an easy GE, think again. She'll kick your butt.
Very sweet. I really liked her as a professor and her German accent was adorable. Not the most interesting subjects but she does her best to make them interesting. Lots of math on midterm and not as much on the final (which was actually a lot harder)
Truly a pleasure. Let me just say to anyone who needs to fulfill the MF or Q requirement: TAKE HER CLASS! I am not saying it will be easy (because it was not at times), but Prof. Steinacker's great attitude and passion makes up for any fears and/or doubts in this sometimes complicated subject. Advice: read notes + do HW + sections = great on exams
Great. Very interested.
FANTASTIC. ADORE HER. Definitely take any class taught by Adrianne
No words really needed, one of the most understanding professor there is, she will go out of her way to help her students in any way possible, and for most part straight forward material, just GREAT!
Fun class, fun teacher, and doable assignments. Non science majors might feel very lost in the first 2 weeks but please go to her office hour and she will give you all your homework answers. The subject is interesting and discussions are lively. There is a final project and take-home midterm. Try your best and you will be fine.
Absolutely excellent- maybe the hardest working teacher at UCSC. Tough course, but she does everything in her power to help you succeed.
Adriane was one of the kindest and most caring professors I've had at UCSC. She genuinely cares about her students and puts a gargantuan amount of effort into helping them understand difficult concepts. While her exams and homework assignments were often challenging, her enthusiasm for physics made the classwork feasible.
Loved this class. All you need to do is attend,do the homework every week, and vaguely read her lecture notes that she posts to ecommons.
Best physics teacher ever! Just do your homework and go to her sections and you will be fine. Her tests are long but mostly just homework questions reworded.
Adriane is super helpful and is a teacher truly wanting to see every student succeed. She goes out of her way to help struggling students, and teaches half her sections. She curves her tests, is a very fair and lenient grader, and is really passionate about astronomy. If you're looking for a math GE, I HIGHLY advise you take ASTRO 003
She is a professor who really loves her subject, and really wants every one of her students to love it, too. Because of this, she is very helpful, very clean (and when she isn't the section should help), very fair in her grading, and a very sweet person. I took the class for the GE, but I would take another class from her!
Go to her sections, understand the homework and go to lecture. Study from what she gives you and you should be fine. She is incredibly helpful and enthusiastic about physics. She is awesome but physics... not so much. Take her if you can.
She's adorable and clearly loves the subject and teaching. She has an accent but is still very clear and thorough. Go to sections, she will do anything she can to help. Though the last section of the class about rotating reference frames seemed rushed compared to the lax pace of the rest of the class. Final is not (technically) cumulative.
Took it this summer(10weeks). I did physics problems every single day. Physics is a hard subject but Steinacker taught it so well that I began to actually LIKE it. She's awesome. Take her, or you will regret it.
She was very enthusiastic and funny. Her lectures are always engaging. I took both Astro 2 and 3 with her, she was wonderful. I recommend her to all my friends!
For being someone who hadn't taken a physics course since sophomore year of high school the class great. she is very helpful and by going to her sections i really got the concepts and how to do certain problems that werent fully discussed in lecture. If you attend class, take your time on homework, and goto section this a an easy A course.
Great professor! She posts lecture notes online, so I suggest not taking notes during lecture and just pay attention to what she is doing instead of wasting time copying. She teaches her own sections and does hw problems. Go! The exams are based off the hw, same problems with new numbers. Do not do homework last minute. Do not by textbook!
Adriane was amazing! She is caring, helpful, and an amazing professor. She is one of the BEST professors at UCSC. She cares about her students very much and willing to help outside of class and section. Her exams were fair and if you need to take Physics series, TAKE IT WITH HER! SHE IS AWESOME!!!!!!
Adriane is amazing! She's one of the few professors you'll encounter that genuinely cares for her students. She really wants everyone to do well and pass the class. She makes an effort to remember everyone's names in office hours and will motivate you to do better even at your lowest lows. Definitely take a physics class with her.
Great Professor. Honest Enthusiasm for teaching the course and I have reserved my judgement on this professor until after having taken a full year of Physics with her. I can honestly say that this was my favorite STEM professor so far. Seriously, if you can get her for ANY class. DO IT.
All previous compliments and praise for her personality and exhaustive effort and passion for teaching are well deserved! Writes her own textbook as course proceeds which is nice. Her teaching style doesn't work for everyone though. Her lectures and notes aren't well structured and often vague and confusing. Her sections are rushed and unclear.
Professor Steinacker is one of my favorite teachers of all time! I began the course only lukewarm about Physics and am going to leave absolutely in love with the subject! She is so supportive and is extremely generous with her time. Make sure to attend her homework sessions if you want to do well on the homework.
LOVE LOVE LOVE this professor!!! Hands down she's the best professor I have ever had in college. She believes in her students and pushes them to reach their goals.Make sure you go to lecture and most important her sections. They are very helpful.Don't just do the homework to turn in.Try to actually understand what it means and you will ace it!!!!!!
Adrianne is AMAZING if you have the opportunity to take her drop who ever you have and do it, just do it. She is an incredible instructor who you will actually learn from. She leads all her own discussions, gives very fair exams and curves. She REALLY cares about her students learning and succeeding, always gives 110% of herself. She is INCREDIBLE
I'm terrible at math and physics, but still managed to pass. Her lectures are boring and tangential to the homework. However, she is extremely helpful and spends a lot of her own time holding sections. Exams are generously curved. It's really obvious that she wants people to do well.
Never take this class as an 8am, it will put you to sleep. She doesn't explain things well and her lectures are extremely boring. Very vague. Her tests are harder than the homework.
extremely nice person, BUT the first day she will tell you that a book is not needed for her class. This is wrong on so many levels as a professor. Hour long lectures are spent doing derivations that could easily be read in a text book, making her lectures absolutely useless. Hours of homework and tests are too difficult due to being short on time
She is a great person but a difficult teacher. With the classes in the morning, I had difficulty staying awake. She puts a lot of time into her students through office hours and section WHICH SAVES YOU if you go. Her personality is adorable and she jokes from time to time. Do not slack off in this class at all. It is hard to catch up.
Steinacker is a very nice professor, but unfortunately being nice does not mean being a good teacher. Her lectures are not organized well and she is very sloppy in her teachings. She does hold office hours and sections herself though which is very nice, but her lectures are so bad that it makes her office hours seem mandatory if you want to pass.
One of the best profs I've ever had. If you go to lecture and do the hw problems, you'll know EXACTLY what will be on the exams. No tricks. Just make sure you actually know how to do them hw problems.
One of the nicest, most caring physics professors I've ever had. I have never met a professor who cared so much for her students. If you can, TAKE HER CLASS! She's also really reasonable with grading. Also shows a funny physics cat video in class. Tests aren't too bad, but there's a real time crunch for the midterms. Plenty of time for the final.
She has really good intentions as a professor and really wants her students to understand the material; however, she has a very confusing way of explaining the material. It's a hit or miss. Unfortunately for me, it was a miss.
Steinacker is the most dedicated professor I have ever had in my life. She holds her own sections and wants ALL of her students to succeed. Lectures are not a necessity but sections ARE. Don't learn the hard way, attend sections and do all the homework whether or not it is due. Tests are difficult but they follow the homework format and she curves.
This has been one of the worst classroom experiences of my life. I'm one quarter from graduation and I've never had a worse professor. She's a lovely person and will give you her time out of class, but for a busy senior with a Job you expect to be able to get at least a passable amount of material in lecture. This is not true of Steinecker.
Seriously, hands down the best teacher I've ever had at UCSC. Assigns homework each week but only every other hw is mandatory. She holds discussions where she goes through how to do the problems and it's very helpful. She is great. Definitely take the physics series with her. No complaints.
Bad professor, very unclear and unnecessarily challenging. Very nice lady who wants students to succeed, but she is completely dedicated to teaching in a certain way that is very convoluted and confusing.
Adriane is the bestnicest professor ever!! She helped me endlessly and genuinely cares for her students and their learning. I am a social science major and even though it was hard class intended for science majors, she helped me every step of the way!
She was wonderful. Some of the lectures were a bit too jam packed to fully absorb the material and she went too fast occasionally, but she puts in tons of extra time to help her students. She's the sweetest little thing too- very kind. Loved her.
One of the best professors here. Class is more for introducing you to material while the sections she holds are where you really begin to understand it. She puts in a lot of time to make sure you succeed and wants all her students to do well. Definitely take if you have the opportunity!
Love her as a person, but really dislike this class. The way she presents information is really confusing, and I've taken intro physics courses in the past. You'll have to work for the passing grade, coming to class isn't enough
She's one of those teachers who's probably very good at teaching advanced Physics, but the way she teaches is not conducive to helping people who have never taken physics (and aren't majoring in it!!!!). Lectures are practically useless, and she makes little sense as she goes way too in depth into derivations. I've heard good things about section
I feel like she is a great teacher for Grad Students. Not Undergrad.
She is a great professor. Homework is due every other week. Her exams are decent if you know the material well. To prepare, be sure to review your homework and the solutions posted. Also, the exam reviews really help since she's hinting at possible components on the upcoming exam. Attend her sections if you need help (on concepts and homework).
Def. not the best match for everyone due to a very unique teaching style. Wants students to critically think, but often left me more confused than when I came in. Section is essential to finish the hw b/c she rarely does practice problems in lecture. Cares more about graphs/visuals than thought process for solution. Overall, not for me
Taking 6B atm and wishing I was taking it with Adrienne. She is VERY clear with material and never leaves you guessing, although her notation may be very tedious to follow since she's so thorough. She shows you the math AND concepts, and never leaves you guessing. Provides more than enough resources for you to follow. Pay attention, and youll pass.
Adriane is a very positive and lighthearted lecturer. She is deeply passionate about physics, and her love for it is inspiring. She's quite possibly my favorite teacher ever. Adriane's homeworks were challenging, but I found that to be more enriching than painful. I hope you guys at Yale appreciate her as much as we do! Thanks, Adriane!
Yes, in college you will be expected to do more than the bare minimum. Adrianne is an inspirational teacher. She is challenging, but in a good way. You don't learn from an easy A. Extremely helpful and goes above and beyond for her students. Put in the effort and you will succeed in her class. I hated physics until I had her. Fantastic teacher!
5B, the first-year waves and optics class, was the hardest class I've taken so far. It was also the most fun! Professor Steinacker is an inspirational, enthusiastic, hard-working, brilliant person.... and her tests reflect that. Be prepared to work hard and gain a thorough understanding of the topics presented, and you will do well.
Adriane is very knowledgeable about the subject. Her class focuses a little more on problem solving than on theory, and she goes through each problem step by step in great detail. Lectures can be pretty boring, but she posts lecture notes and review sheets online to study from. Overall a very good professor, take physics with her if you can.
Worst teacher i have had in college ever. Seriously don't take this teacher. May be good for in easier class 6A/6B but she does not know how to teach 6C. In my encounter with her personally she seemed short temperated and rude when it came to clarifying questions and asking her about assignments. Avoid at all cost!!!
A wonderful person, an even better lecturer. Funny, brilliant, and works hard to teach her students about the beauty and power of physics. HARD homework, but you'll walk out learning a lot (I'll bet you'll always remember about the right-hand rule 'til the day you die because of her). One of the best I've ever had, and I'll miss her. Enjoy Yale!
Best class I've ever had so far. The only professor I rated all 5 in evaluation system. I dont understand why some people give her bad feedback. She's going to Yale this summer. I will miss her and hope I can take her class once more. Again, best professor I've ever had.
Inspirational, intelligent, and hilarious. Adrianne is easily the best professor Ive had at UCSC. She cares about her students and is willing to go above and beyond to make sure her students get help. Her lectures can be overwhelming, but they are fun once you warm up to the material. Work hard and go to section. Yale is lucky to have her.
She's incredibly dedicated to her students. The content is hard, but she goes out of her way to build a solid support system for the class!
