Eastwood is an energetic and easy going prof. She allows the class to run off on tangents and yet somehow I still learn. I normally don't appreciate Shakespeare but Eastwood makes it fun. She also doesn't require a lot of work. This semester we read maybe 8 plays no sonnets and no peer reviews. We had two papers a final and a final project. Pretty much a cake walk if you go to class everyday. I plan on taking her for whatever other class she teaches and I need.
Awesome professor! One of the best I have ever had. Intelligent, witty, helpful. She loves to hear from the students and what they have to say, so be prepared to do your reading and participate in discussions. Its a pretty hard class but very rewarding.
I thought that overall she was a good teacher, I mean I didn't really learn more than I knew...but she was quite funny. She kind of reminded me of Ellen Degeneres. The essays were a little tough, she graded harder than I would have thought. She wants a lot of class participation and discussion, so be prepared daily.
funny, witty teacher. she encourages participation but isn't too intimidating which is good. her discussions are really interesting. it's basically going over the reading and our opinions about it. she's easy to talk to. a fair grader. she gives u leeway on ur essays, and is very flexible with the assignments. i'd recommend her.
Dr. Eastwood makes Shakespeare fun and interesting! Though this was a night class there was no yawns from the class- she kept us engaged and thinking the entire time! Lots of reading, but no tests except for final make it hard to change grade... but still one of the best classes I've taken at State! Sign up w/ Dr. Eastwood!
Dr Eastwood is totally hot! She's funny, interesting and knows what she's talking about. She's a hard grader, but fair. I'd recommend taking any class from her. She's cool, nice and did I mention, HOT!
Offers an alternative look at some major texts from British Literature, while maintaining the integrity of the class. Eastwood is extreemly engaging and funny, take any class she teaches.
VERY FUN teacher! engages cLass aLL the time. fun sense of humor. pretty straight forward cLass. i Loved her cLass. take!!
Got my first c- on an essay in her class. thoguht i was getting dumber too. She is very funny and loves to engage you into class activity. You can even argue over essay grades and have it fixed. She's a good english 1a teacher and you get to learn stuff. She is nice and not mean like the rest.
Very entertaining prof, going to class is always fun. A hard grader on essays if she doesn't agree with your pt of view. Get on her good side by participating in discussion, she's a stickler for that.
Professor Eastwood's classes are always interesting and always look forward to going to her class. Discussions are always engaging and she is a good teacher overall
Very fun, interesting class. Funny professor, interesting topics. Homework is easy and not too time-consuming. Essays generally have interesting topics. Class discussions are very open-ended. Open-minded teacher, very laid back. I recommend this teacher--you'll love this class.
Awesome prof, great person. If you think about the things you wish for in a class - hip, intelligent prof engaged with the topic; humourous, entertaining lectures; reasonable assignments and exams - she provides it all. I gave her a hotness point, and not to diminish her physical gifts, but what makes her hot to me is her great big bouncy brains.
it was too much reading for me to keep up. about a play every 1.5-2 weeks. but then again, i never read.
You cannot go wrong with this teacher. The other reviews speak for me in that she is a teacher that wants to teach and interact with her students. She does not grade too strictly, but if you brush off the readings, you might be in trouble. She's extremely witty, fun to talk with, and knowledgeable about what she teaches. Definitely recommended.
She's very funny, and clearly knowledgeable. She assigns a play almost once every two weeks, and as a result, the material is only briefly skimmed over. She has a tendency to assign thematic papers and film reviews, and she's pretty lenient when it comes to grading. To do well, just read the play and participate in class!
Super entertaining- never a dull moment in her class. Very personable. Fair grader if you do your part.
OK, I didn't take her class, but I've read some of her early papers. Not quite as commanding as Ken Jowitt, but certainly entertaining. ( I'm really just here to click the "HOT" button!!)
I wouldn't recommend this professor. Her teaching methods are poor, unqualified for a full professorship (which may be why she doesn't have that status). Her idea of teaching is to be like the students, rather than taking command of her class and it's attention. She's a goof ball, to put it plainly. I hope I never have a class with her again.
I pretty much agree with everything the most recent reviewer said. I came expecting a lecture class but most of it was listening to the other students ramble on about their ridiculous interpretations of Shakespeare's plays...
I enjoyed ENGL 145. Dr. Eastwood is fun, approachable, and I learned a lot from the class discussions.
Great teacher! Don't take the other Shakespeare guy; Dr. E. is the best one!
This professor is awesome! She's really funny and open-minded. Her interpretations of the plays are really insightful and you can tell she knows her stuff. If you are interested in gender studies or the like, you will get a kick out of her class. You can get by the class mostly by reading NO FEAR SHAKESPEARE.
Dr. Eastwood was so great! Don't listen to the person who said she was a goofball. This person is obviously a loser with no personality. Dr. Eastwood will listen to everyone's opinion of the plays, and clear out obvious misinterpretations ONLY when needed--that doesn't make her a hippie. She is a fair grader. Keeps your attention.
She is absolutely hilarious! Very entertaining in class and always cracks jokes. She made the class very entertaining. We used the book A LOT in class with assigned reading every class. Remember to take lots of notes during her lecture and do the assigned reading. You will need that information for the midterm, final, weekly thinksheets, and paper.
Eastwood is terrific! She presented us with texts that we couldn't possibly have got with other teachers in the dept. she expects alot because we have alot of student slackers in the dept. too bad some people ruined the class for us by being stupid!
Come to every class, and take it seriously. Listen well and take meticulous notes. This class is very interesting and you will learn a lot. She is engaging and charasmatic with a bit of quirky fun.
This class is not easy. Dr. Eastwood is a very awesome and hilarious professor, however, this class is difficult. Attendance is mandatory! especially if you want to get good grades. Read all the assigned plays, try to participate in the lecture, and take good notes in class.
I really liked this class! You have to read a lot but if you read the books you should get an A in the class. The teacher is really entertaining and she makes the class very interesting to the point where you dont want to fall asleep. So great class I highly recommend it!
attend class and pay attention because that is basically your midterm and final right there. read the text book.
The best professor to take for a Shakespeare class (or any class). Makes the subject material fun to read and interpret, and is extremely passionate about the work. If you want an easy-going, fun professor who actually TEACHES, take Eastwood.
Dr. Eastwood is the best professor ever. I was afraid of this class and she made it so much fun, but also very interesting! Come to Every Class! Bring your book and read the assignments. You'll have lots of fun and learn a lot. Definitely recommended.
Fantastic Professor! Eastwood is passionate and funny. I absolutely loved this class! But make sure you ALWAYS attend, because the specifics of her lectures are on the midterms, not just the reading.
She is a fairly cool teacher, just MAKE SURE YOU DO THE READING or that coolness will go away FAST. She's fairly easy to talk to too. The essays are a little confusing but she'll help you through if asked
I have never learned so much from a professor before. She expects you to pay attention, read the material, and participate in class. In return you will understand why the subject is important and become interested in it as well. I would take ANY class from her. Super cool and helpful, and an expert in her field.
Nice teacher, but that good mood can go away very quickly. I didn't like the topics for the essays, they were rather boring actually. Do your best and you should be ok. Also, DO THE READINGS! Very important.
Very modern teacher. you read a lot of stuff in expensive books that can be found on the internet. very helpful. very organized. cracks me up with jokes. but is a tough grader bc she knows her stuff, so don't think she is that nice. also raise ur hand before speaking, she likes that.
Dr. Eastwood is an amazing professor. Her classes are always fun and entertaining, and she's very knowledgeable about her field! She's a pretty tough grader, but you'll see your writing improve by every paper. I can't recommend her enough. I've taken 2 of her classes and I'd definitely like to take more!!
She's awesome and funny. She makes Shakespeare fun. Very open to different interpretations of the text. She grades assignments fairly and expects students to come to class having read the plays.
Awesome teacher. Im a cs major just knocking out a ge but her class discussions are fun. She is unlike other english teachers where you are free to disagree without fear of hurting your grade. Easy grader too, probably worked only about 10 hours total for this class and easily got an A. Easily the best english class ive ever taken. Great lady.
Her teaching methods are very modern and different. She encourages class discussion and welcomes differing opinions and interpretations. There's a lot of reading but it's important that you keep up. She makes it fun and interesting, and makes you think by changing your perspective. She likes to assign group work. Provides helpful feedback.
Amazing professor who knows her subject well and can kindle a flame in students for Shakespeare's plays. She's a tough, but fair grader. I learned a lot from her comments in class and on graded assignments: 2 essays, 3 movie reviews, a monologue and a creative project. You will become a more critical viewer of movies.
She is the best teacher I've had at sjsu. Makes the lectures so interesting. She's so chill! Would take any of her classes! 1010 would recommend!
Pretty easy class. The final project is easy as long as you start it as soon as possible. Make sure you read or you will be completely lost during the lectures. Cusses a lot, very funny and the lectures are helpful.
Professor Eastwood is an amazing teacher and really knows her stuff. She also makes something boring like Shakespeare really entertaining. But, the downside is that she is a tough grader. Her midterms and writing assignments require detail and precision. I wish I took an easier GE because I got screwed over by the film reviews.
Don't start your essay the night before because you'll probably struggle with them if you do that. Film reviews are quite difficult, but say something original and cite both the text and specific scenes. Final is passage IDs.
She is pretty terrifying at first, but is actually really nice. She is very willing to adapt to and help students. But the structure of this class was opposite of what it should have been. We did not learn much about writing until the end. The beginning, middle, and end were all about analyzing literature and less about writing.
Best professor, I learned so much in this class. You have to go to every lecture and take notes, literally just write down what she says and then regurgitate it on the essays and tests. She's funny, interesting, and smart. She is a tough grader on essays but not on the midterms and in class write ups. Doesn't really get to know students but oh well
Eastwood is a pretty cool Professor. She's a hard grader, but her lectures are absolutely funny and interesting. (She always relates a play to something homoerotic.) Shakespeare is required for Creative Writing, so I would recommend Eastwood if you need to take the class. She's always lively and fun to be around. BUT don't forget the textbook!
She is condescending to her students and doesn't know how to facilitate discussions in ways that make students feel included. Gives incredibly vague criteria on her essays, and then grades students absurdly harshly if they don't meet those criteria. Basically, a professor who expects you to regurgitate everything she says. Don't take.
Dr. Eastwood is an interesting professor. 145 focuses on performing Shakespeare (film and theater) as another layer of interpreting the text. Get all the reading done otherwise class will be boring. 3 movie reviews, 2 essays, a project, and you need to perform a monologue. Probably more fun than 144. Listen to feedback, do the work.
A lot of lecture but not a lot of class discussion or input unfortunately. Midterm and Final are quote identification and repeating her arguments from in-class lectures. Dr. Eastwood has a great sense of humor and interesting arguments for the readings. Be prepared to do a lot of reading and take notes on otherwise you'll bomb.
Her assignments are straightforward and lectures are fun and easy to understand. Easy final project and the final exam isn't too bad either.
All the assignments are standard and straightforward--if you put in the effort, you're guaranteed to get a passing grade if not higher. Really encourages discussion and creates a fun environment for it too. Make sure to do the reading, come to class often (because every lecture is jam-packed with info), and you'll do fine!
She seems like a nice person and tries to make her lessons fun but she is a very hard grader and her grading comments are not helpful. She is not clear with how she wants her assignments to be structured and her lectures usually go off topic and you wont understand what you need to get by the end of it. Honestly I wished I dropped out.
Loved how she really aims to make class NOT so boring. With her, reading Shakespeare is quite fun and entertaining, and I've learned a lot. But Dr. Eastwood is essentially an English professor who expects you to regurgitate info, not so much ponder on your own ideas about the play. Do that and you'll be solid.
I did not trust Eastwood's knowledge of the texts she was teaching. This was a very unpleasant experience.
If you have to take Shakespeare you might as well take Dr. Eastwood. Her lectures are really entertaining and the homework is easy enough -- but she is a really really hard grader. I'm an English major used to breezing through with A's but it was in this class that I got my first C at SJSU. The worst part is that she hardly gives you any feedback.
Cool/interesting class. Lots of info from lectures. Papers were interesting prompts making it a little easier to decide what to write about. Take good lecture notes and you are set for this class.
My first class as an English major and it was beyond difficult. There are so many readings for midterm/final that it made it impossible to narrow down which quotes are from what text. Doesn't give feedback on papers and grades hard.
Learned a lot about Shakespeare and his texts which I can use in other classes. Go to class, read the text, take good notes. Essay prompts interesting, no feedback on essay.
Really tough grader, barely gives any feedback and it's not really useful. Participation is a HUGE part of the grade, and she measures it by how much you speak, which sucks for people who are shy or quiet. I'm an English major and I have loved most English classes I took at my previous university, but Eastwood's class is my least favorite by far.
The worst English professor I have taken ever. Her feedback is unclear & her description of the assignments are terrible. She only gives those who suck up to her decent grades and everyone else gets a C or lower. If you value your gpa, I suggest you avoid this professor at all costs. Wait for the next semester if she's teaching a class you need.
I did not enjoy her as a teacher but I liked her as a person. 1-on-1 she is helpful and nice. But, the way she teaches Shakespeare upset me, she is unable to see him as problematic at all and goes to extreme lengths to justify everything he writes as ethical. If you care about that kind of thing. Also, there is so much HW for this class.
Professor Eastwood gets by with ambiguous and vaguely opinionated lectures. Her organization is incredibly poor and her instructions on assignments and tests is very unclear. Her live classes were usually never about the assigned material. I took this class because I needed the credit but never again would I take it with her!
You need to read all the plays and watch her lectures in order to pass this class. She includes thorough details about the plays and some questions are based on her viewpoints. So if your answers don't align with her opinion, you will not get credit for it. She also grades very tough on the essays and doesn't give enough feedback to improve.
Somewhat difficult, make sure to do all the homework and study what she says or talks about in the lectures since she brings it up in the final
I really liked the class and thought she gave a new insight to Shakespeare. The class is not necessarily easy due to her tricky quiz questions and heavy lectures, but shes a really funny and insightful teacher. My favorite of San Jose state so far. Learned so much.
her dry humor is so annoying. her one dimensional lectures are even more annoying. she's doesn't seem to have a passion for this stuff, every class i had with her she's just drained and bored, which makes me feel drained and bored. maybe if she was more open to interpretations then the class would be more bearable
Generally, I liked her lecture videos. They were fairly interesting compared to others I've had. As for assignments and essays, the grading criteria was unclear. I was extremely disappointed in an essay grade only to find out it was the average for the class. In terms of difficulty, this class sneaks up on you after the midterm.
Had to put Eastwood's online lectures at 2x speed to give her any semblance of passion for what she's teaching. Instructions are often unclear, and gives very unreasonable deadlines for assignments (we had to write a six-page essay in less than two weeks, using only three literary sources). Refuses to acknowledge the opinions of her students.
Dr. Eastwood is an affable professor. She is passionate about the subject and entertaining (especially the Dr. Faustus lecture). That said, this class will NOT be easy. Be ready to write a lot. One of the things many of our peers took issue with was how quickly she assigns things. Remember what is mentioned in the lectures and you will be fine.
Texts are difficult/boring. Class scored less than 70% on the majority of all assignments. No rubrics. Unclear directions and tricky quizzes. Never takes accountability for her class doing poorly. Have to align your interpretations with hers to do well. Feedback on papers was just critique. Midterm/Final are awful. Regret taking this class.
It's a mixed bag, really. Shakespeare is an influential writer, paving a path for those succeeding him, but he is rooted in colonialism to SOME extent, but she refuses to see it. She is passionate about the Shakespearean era, making her class very engaging. I wish she had given more comments on the essays to know where I lost points.
It's a 4 Unit English class, so just be prepared to do a lot of work. I'm not an English major but this class was relatively doable. I wish she had slides for her lectures because they can be hard to follow. She is generally a harsh grader, but if you just do the work decently you will pass. The instructions at times can feel vague or misleading.
This teacher actually got me to enjoy Shakespeare. She's funny, but tends to go off on tangents in class. Class isn't mandatory, but I found her lectures to be very important for completing essays. Lots of reading, but important for homework and final exam. Memorize your monologue, she will mark you down if you have to read it off your phone/book.
Awful teacher just took her class because I has to she obviously doesn't want her students to succeed in her class.
She's so hard to understand. I definitely struggled to keep up with her.
Class sessions are entirely lectures, most of which are littered with political rants. Makes her opinions on Shakespeare to be objective fact, making it difficult to discern what is/isn't historically true. Your grade will suffer if you don't vomit back her political opinions. Wouldn't take this class again if I had a gun pointed at my head.
Some students are intimidated by course material and as such, don't participate/feel isolated. I've heard some people say she grades in accordance with her own interpretations; my experience is that as long as you know how to support your argument you're fine. The film reflections were a highlight for me, and she was communicative & accommodating.
DO NOT take this class with her unless you enjoy English ALOT. Pop quizzes with 'correct' answers that only exist in the professor's head. For a Beowulf class, she acts like she's teaching baryogenesis in quantum physics. Take this if you're psychic and can read shakespeare and minds. A masterclass in pretentious, arbitrary grading. Good Luck
If you plan on maintaining a strong GPA, I STRONGLY do not recommend this professor and her class. The material covered in this class is made difficult due to the vague instructions for almost every test. Her lectures are also tedious, so unless you are genuinely passionate for old English literature, and could bear ambiguity, then go for it.
It was a lot of reading for me, and the pace was pretty fast. But she's a great teacher. You definitely need to be very attentive and locked in because the final is based on her lecture opinions (take detailed notes!) She's a tough grader, class average grades for papers were scarily low, so watch out. Class is interesting, but no walk in the park.
Eastwood is phenomenal! Her detailed feedback on the essays pushed me to grow as a writer and critical thinker. She's particular, yes, but fair. As another reviewer said, if you can clearly articulate and defend your argument/stance, she values original thought. Push yourself and she'll reward you.
Eastwood is alright. She has a lot of knowledge and I can tell she enjoys teaching, but she's kind of intimidating. Lots of essays and the final one involves peer-review, one-on-one conference with her, etc. She's not the worst, but if you stress out easily from work, try and find a different professor.
