Dr. Shnier is the best prof I've ever had! She is not only an amazing and passionate teacher, but also truly cares about her students & wants us to succeed. She is accommodating & went the extra mile to ensure we understood the content & had our questions answered. If you participate & stay up to date with readings & lectures, you will do well!
Dr. Shnier lectures were ok but she solely used the readings to teach and explain the content. Ifat was my TA and she gave good feedback about the assignments, but she is kind of a hard marker. LOTS of readings so make sure you stay up to date with the content!
Dr. Shnier is an amazing prof! I really liked her and I highly recommend taking her HLST 3015 - it's a super interesting course and her lectures very clear and easy to understand. There are four papers and a final throughout the term but they're really easy if you keep up with her lectures.
I thought this would be a course I'd enjoy but the content is thick, she doesn't explain much beyond reading her slides and she is a very hard marker. She gives little feedback on the assignments and seems annoyed when asked to explain the feedback. She is also reluctant to help develop writing skills, expecting you to have lawyer level analysis
I had Dr. Shnier for IHST 1010 in the Fall 2020 semester and loved her course! Amazing professor - lectures were really interesting - and super accessible outside of class. She was really willing to take time to speak to her students one on one during office hours for extra help/discussions about the material. Would 100% take a second course!
I'm sure she's a nice person, however, in terms of a university-level professor she does not know how to effectively teach and convey material to students. Her lectures are hard to understand. I've had professors before (such as Dennis, Amrita, and Roberta) who have taught material in a fun and enjoyable manner. I would not recommend this prof.
Not worth the headache. Take it with another prof if you can.
I love the course Pharmaceutical Politics, but Professor Shnier is an average marker and she will mark you on the tiniest things. The course consists of 4 reflections and a poster all worth 20%. The material is dense and the slides are brief, but overall informative.
This course has interesting material, but Professor Shnier marks hard. The course consists of a group topic proposal, a group decision note, an analysis, and a poster. For the decision note, the grade received was lower than anticipated even with her feedback applied and you have to ask her for clarity most of the time.
I have taken three courses with Professor Shnier. She is easily one of the most accessible professors I have ever had. She is so understanding of circumstances outside of school and even made time to speak with me over the phone several times. You have to do the work and listen to the lectures, but her lectures follow the readings. Would recommend!
Lectures prerecorded in shorter parts, good bc I work full time. Good teacher. Tutorials live & recorded. Enjoyed attending live bc prof Shnier talks about skills, her experience & answers questions about our futures & how to get there. Was SO motivational & inspiring. Got me thinking about what I want to do in life. Just talk to her once! Worth it
Literally the best prof I have ever had. Lectures were relevant and so interesting, and uses her experience to demonstrate why we should care. She totally changed the way I view drug regulation and helped me understand what a critical analysis actually is. All assignments are based on the same instructions, so you can use her feedback and improve.
This course had some group work in it, which was tough virtually but once we emailed Professor, she held Zoom meetings with my group to help us stay on track and kept checking in. **If you follow the asst instructions, you will do fine.** Her grading is detail-oriented - you have to understand the concepts and you will learn grammar and spelling!
The professor reads directly off the slides for lectures; these lectures are posted to eClass a day or two than promised on the syllabus (makes for difficulty planning). The assignment criteria are vague but it's good to talk to your TA to find out what they expect. However, I appreciate that there was no final exam, and few assignments overall.
I really enjoyed this course. I found Professor Shnier's teaching style to be clear and organized and she was easy to follow. I really appreciated how she made the extra effort to be available for calls and to answer any questions that I had as I completed the assignments. I found the course material to be very relevant. Will take another with her.
This prof is good. She helped me see the world different. The course is virtual but I still liked it and learned about pharma and Health Canada. She took us behind the scenes. The prof is available for phone and Zoom and is very nice. She responded to email fast and helped me out. I want to take more classes with her.
This class was by far the most interesting. Professor Shnier is passionate about pharma policy, regulation, and the public's right to know about drug data and safety. She introduced us to shocking examples and analyses of illegal marketing and unethical behavour. She truly cares about student success and will give you as detailed help as you need.
Dr. Shnier was my academic supervisor for our Capstone Practicum courses. She was absolutely amazing. In our biweekly webinars, she helped us troubleshoot and work through any potential professional or academic challenges. She has a huge and concentrated focus on skills development and helped us work through and reflect on situations to improve.
I really enjoyed this class. I did well on the assts and learned how to do a research poster for the first time. I really enjoyed professor Shnier's teaching style and structure of her classes, so much that I enrolled in another course with her this semester. If you have questions, definitely ask. I did and I improved so much. She's happy to help.
Great informed lectures, easy assignments if you watch the lectures. Lectures mirror the readings, easy to follow. Lectures are easy to understand, she doesn't use difficult language. Explains everything from scratch and doesn't assume you have a background in the topic. Was always available for help if you ask.
Good class, informative lectures and readings, great prof all round.
Professor Shnier was so supportive in the capstone course for our practicum placements. She was calming during stressful times and helped us with solutions and learning the skills to transition from student to placement student/professional. I have graduated now, but would definitely take this class with her again.
Interesting class, but different than other classes. Since the class is agents of change, it is more skills based with guest speakers panels and lots of reflection and discussion to figure out how to make a difference in global health. Live virtual and also recorded so available for later, which I appreciated.
Speakers panels are so inspirational!!! Makes me want to be an Agent of Change and actually do something that makes a difference!!!
UNREAL prof. Didn't know what to make of this class, but I'm so glad I took it this year with this prof. So inspirational and honest about her own professional path and makes me feel like I can do it too. So engaging and open and clearly cares about her students and their wellbeing not just now, in the future too. Light reading, lots of reflection.
This course is online this semester. Lectures are recorded and posted asynchronously. I've taken other courses where the lectures were recorded and they were so hard to listen to, but this prof is dynamic, passionate, engaging and I honestly get excited to listen to lectures. This prof also has a podcast about student success that is inspiring.
I have read a good amount of positive reviews on Dr. Shnier. I wish I had that same positive experience with her, however, having taken two courses with her, she does not display an understanding and care for students as much as I wish I witnessed. I respect her for her achievements and hard work. But I wish she was more approachable and kind.
The lectures were pre-recorded to watch but was not at all engaging. The assignments weren't difficult but she doesn't clearly indicate her expectations which results in lower grades. Provides very vague descriptions on assignment requirements. Tough grader and doesn't provide adequate feedback on assignments.
Great classes! I found the prerecorded lectures very engaging and I attended live Q&A sessions regularly AND spoke over the phone with Dr. Shnier throughout the semester - she gave us her phone number! She is the most accessible and caring prof I have ever had.
I have taken at least 3 classes with Prof Shnier through my undergrad. I've found that she is consistent, predictable, fair, and actually cares about her students. She is so transparent and will spend as much time as you need on the phone or Zoom to help you understand any concepts or feedback that she provides - all you have to do is email her!
I am so happy that I had prof Shnier again for my practicum capstone in Global Health. She was so supportive in a really challenging practicum semester online and helped ease the transition from student to professional. I could not have performed as well in my placement without her. I am so thankful for her support and guidance.
Good prof. Gave me her phone number to call for help in the course. Very accessible. Also has a podcast to help students and I listen all the time. Talks about academics honestly. Uplifting and helpful during this time.
This class was so inspiring. Prior to this course, I had no idea what an agent of change was and through the course I learned that I can be one! I can make a difference for someone or a community, even if its a small one. Also I just discovered this prof's podcast and its so inspirational for students! I've never thought about my mindset until now.
Great prof. Cares about her students. Would take again.
Personally, I really enjoyed her class, which comes from a short attention span. I can actually learn in her classes and pay attention and enjoy.
I ACTUALLY learn useful info in Prof Shnier's classes. This was my favorite class.
Professor Shnier's lectures were very interesting and the course content was very useful. I really learned a lot. She is very approachable and takes the time to answer any questions. I highly recommend taking a course with her.
This was one of my favourite courses at York. The course was very thought-provoking and interesting. Dr. Shnier really forced me to think critically and to engage with the course material. I enjoyed the class discussions. She's also extremely approachable. I recommend this course to anyone.
Great class. I enjoyed Dr. Shnier's teaching style. She's really an expert in the health policy field. On top of that, it's easy to speak with her for clarification about anything in the course. She made herself available by phone for me and answered questions that I had about an assignment. I recommend any course that she teaches!
Prof. Shnier introduced me to true critical thinking and what that means. She didn't just teach us the law in a boring way - she brought it to life using her vast experience in her cases as a lawyer and from her experiences in court representing her clients. She doesn't just accept the law for what it is and teaches us critical questions. Rec!
I have taken 4 classes with Dr. Shnier. I absolutely love her teaching style. She is free flowing, conversational, and makes everything relevant to our lives. Always asking why should we care or why does this matter to us. Welcomes questions and discussion and engages with curiosity. Would take more with her, but I'm graduating!
I absolutely loved learning about healthcare law and how it correlates with health status. The professor provided a different perspective by using her own experience and real life situations that allow you to comprehend exactly how the law is connected to health outcomes.
Dr. Shnier cares about Healthcare Law and teaches the material in a very interactive way. I learned a lot from the course. She is available to help students and gave out her cell phone number so that students could reach her with questions. Her podcast (The Advancement Spot Podcast) is great. I highly recommend any course taught by Dr. Shnier!
Professor Shnier made this course so much better. She came on replacing another prof and all of a sudden my questions were answered and everything started going more smoothly. She gave us so much extra time in office hours when we didn't have any before. Hands down a better experience because of her and how she approached the course.10/10 recommend
Brought mindset study into our class to compliment the course work on our Practicum placements. I've never seen a prof do that. I really enjoyed it and think about my success differently now. Also, available outside of class and helpful with handling practicum placement situations. Different way of teaching and engaging that I really liked.
I have had a prof that values actual reflection, important after our tough practicum placements. Dr. Shnier was so supportive through challenges in our placements, switching profs, the strike, and much more. She helped me see value in myself and my worth and added in outside texts on reflection, mindset and processing experiences.
The class I had Dr. Shnier for ended today, IHST4300 and 4400, but it wasn't in the list. I would take this class with her all over again. Well rounded in how she teaches and values every single student and experience. Gives us all time to talk, reflect, and process our placements. I never felt rushed. I always felt like she wanted to hear me. ty
Really enjoyed the course and this prof. Brings in her outside work helping students aim for more and get into grad schools. Was really helpful when I had an issue with my supervisor, walked me through everything and really cared about the outcome. Would definitely take again.
Good and insightful class. I have never reflected like that in university before. Professor Shnier taught us despite the strike so we could graduate on time and finish our international placements. I'm thankful to her for that.
This was my first time taking a course with her and she was never on time for lectures which was not professional. Second, her instructions for evolutions were very vague. When asked about it she would expect us to guess it. She herself seems like a great women but being on time and being more specific would have been better.
I had her in 4510 and 4010 and both classes were great. I usually dread going to class and doing the work, but this Prof made the content actually fun and interesting and I actually enjoyed doing the work. The classes were ethics and human rights.
I had some really hard things happen to me in life during this class and Dr S was so understanding and easy to deal with when I needed support. She has so much respect for her students and cares about them and that is evident in her approach. I couldn't have gone through this summer the same without this support. I'm thankful!
Prof started by explaining that she cares about our learning process and her approach. Ive never had a prof do that before. What she said was true. All you have to do is show that you're trying, you care, put in effort, and show up and you will be just fine. She said straight up what you see is what you get, no surprises and she was right.
I don't know why people r glazing she was not a good professor at all. She is not organized at all and was all over the place. Not one thing on time except for students to post their stuff on time (we were doing our part right at least). I dont know how she has high rating. Was not a course from my program but would never take anything with her.
Best prof I've had tbh. Consistent expectations between courses as I've had her many times. Great, listens to students, and is caring. Starts from basics and doesn't expect students to have a background knowledge on complicated topics. Have taken a bunch of courses with her and would take again.
Dr. Shnier is an excellent professor. She is helpful, friendly and really knows the material well. I really enjoyed this course and would take another course with her in the future.
This course was blended and Dr Shnier was considerate in how she booked in class vs virtual time. Her lectures were well organized and always packed with relevant and interesting analyses. You can tell she is a lawyer by the way she dissects details. I found her verbal feedback very helpful and she always made time for me, phone, zoom & in person.
Good teacher. cares about student learning and brings her experience as a lawyer into the classroom.taking more classes with her this sem . clear slides. we covered alot of info. i might change my mind about what i want to do bc im inspired to do something.
Predictable expectations from class to class with Dr. Shnier. Organized clear slides. Posts links to the readings on eclass for the whole semester at the start so you have time to organize yourself. Usually required to cite lecture in addition to readings/video content that is required. Focused on understanding and skills. No memorizing required.
Kind, easy to talk to. Would be there with me after class to talk to and helped me through a tough situation. Interesting class, related the class to our lives and made the classroom feel like a community. focused on learning rather than memorizing. would definitly take again but Im graduating.
Lectures are her asking everyone how they're feeling about the course for the whole 1.5 hours (which is supposed to be a 3hr long class). Have covered exactly zero content so we all have to pretend we have reflections...it's clear we are her lunch break. Frankly this course is insulting and a waste of everyone's time.
This professor is objectively bad - our course was not a priority for her to teach and made mention of this loosely over and over. she is not organized, does not follow her own syllabus nor marking rubrics (if there is one) and just does meaningless “mindfulness” exercises to make up for the lack of planning. Unless mandatory, don't recommend her
She's super nice but not a good prof. Her law firm and grad school consulting business (??) are obviously more of a priority than this class. For two of our 3h lectures we just watched documentaries (attendance was still mandatory). She tries to spin the class as "self-directed learning" but she clearly just doesn't have the time to teach...
Truly the most understanding prof. Knows the content and delivers it well.
I 100% agree. She was so clear that she tried to make this class light and was so accommodating with all of our deadlines and the assignments bc this course was never supposed to happen. She was honestly so flexible for us. I appreciated it and how she did it made it possible for me to get everything done without losing late marks.
Dr. Shnier really knows the course material well and is passionate about teaching. She is friendly and approachable. Her teaching style was really a breath of fresh air for me. I looked forward to each class. I have truly enjoyed learning from her. I would definitely take another course with her again.
these are questionably repetitive reviews and she only teaches two courses in FOH that are extremely small in class size. This professor is unorganized, has poor time management, prioritizes her side businesses, and her marking is inconsistent. You're not learning anything from her two. Avoid
This class inspired me to be interested in Law. This prof knows her material and is passionate and her assignments were manageable based on course content. Always accessible and understanding. I recommend getting to know her and you will have a good experience
Great content in this class. Gave an overview of Health law and it gave me ideas for my future. I'm actually inspired that Prof S does what she does, running her companies etc and helping people. It showed me that I can do more than I thought and she is a role model for me. Taking her classes again.
Really enjoyed this class. Dr. Shnier was very accessible when I had questions. It was great to learn from someone who runs a law firm and practices health law. I really enjoyed her real world insights into professional regulation, privacy and confidentiality and pharmaceutical law.
Yes this prof is nice but she is extremely unorganized. Half of the time she's eating in class and forgets to post the submission box by the due date. She doesn't have grading schemes and rarely gives feedback so she just makes marks up as she goes. Your grade is really a hit or miss
This professor's courses are chaotic. She fails spectacularly in organization and time management. Her top priority is clearly her law firm and grad school consulting business, leaving students to deal with inconsistent grading and a syllabus that's more of a suggestion than a guide. She is not professional at all. Avoid her.
Helped me grow professionally for my practicum placement. Before I was feeling unsure and now I have tools to help me in professional situations.
LOVED this class! Prof Shnier is so passionate about health law and she talks about her work as a lawyer. She made me want to be a lawyer to practise health law. I didn't know what to expect but glad I took the class with her.
great. would take with her again
The reviews below are hilarious. She can't eat in class - she is teaching lol. Great class, prepares us for the professional roles we are about to start. Have taken many times and will take again. Organization not a problem either. She actually juggles a lot and talks to us about it to help us with our success.
Good class good prof easy to talk to
I didn't learn anything from this course. It was so confusing and a waste of time. I wouldn't recommend her.
Good experience and learned a lot about myself
Professor Shnier is a great prof. Despite the class being at 8:30 am with mandatory attendance, some classes were held on Zoom and the lecture content was actually interesting, so it wasn't too bad. She is flexible and willing to give extensions when needed. Take-home midterm and no final exam, just a big paper. Would recommend her!
Good prof. If you show up, she will help you out, look at your assignments before you submit and answer questions and will help you with personal advice too. Recommend
Dr S clearly loves the material & brings in her own experience as a lawyer with complicated files. That makes it jump off the page. In past classes law was boring but I actually looked forward to this 830am class and actually went in person. Fair grader and clearly wants us to succeed!!
Dr. Shnier is dedicated to students' growth—not just academically, but personally and professionally. She genuinely cares about each student's success, and provides thoughtful feedback, support, and encouragement. Outside of class she is accessible and enthusiastic to help those who show up for themselves. Would be happy to have this prof again
Profs classes are impactful and she lectures with intention. Her lectures are not just repeating what you read from the textbook, she goes beyond to provoke critical thinking and shows you how it all applies in real situations. One thing I noticed from any of my classes with Dr. Shnier is that she is supportive, but you have to show up.
Doesn't actually teach. No lecture material. Spent the entire class watching videos and trying to get the class participants to talk so she doesn't have to. Learned absolutely nothing about the class topic. She's a lawyer and a law professor who has 0 hits on CanLII - seriously?? Clearly has no real world experience to actually teach health law.
OK prof. Not a harsh marker but does not have clear grading criteria, nor does she leave any feedback.
The instructions for the final assignment were very vague. There was little to no feedback, which made it difficult to understand expectations or improve.
there's little guidance on how to improve beyond the grades themselves
marked attendance and participation. No proper rubric, contradictory instructions for assignments, leaves absolutely no feedback.
