Knows her stuff, though can be hard and intimidating. Wants to help but only if you've done the work and know stuff too. Not bad, just hard to get used to.

Has no business teaching a lower division course, clearly didnt want to be there and fostered a very negative classroom environment. Supposedly very good for upper division, extremly hard regardless.
Knows her stuff, good course material, but not a professor I enjoyed. Harsh to her undergrad students, would refuse to actually HELP us, instead treated us like idiots. A good and challenging class, but she is NOT a nice professor, nor very clear lectures
Never ever take this class with her! she is an overall nice person, but has no business teaching a lower division class. She at time seems annoyed that she has to spend time with undergrads who might as well not exist.
One of her favorite phrases is "I failed this class when I was an undergrad, so I'm not going to adjust, you're just going to fail too" She's insane. Her goal is to have students fail instead of pass.
I have taken many classes with Professor Zihlman and despite what all these people are whining about, Adrienne is a very good teacher. These people that are whining clearly did not work for their grade. For success - follow directions, work hard, improve.
Very discouraging person. Made me hate Anthropologists.
Ugh. Clearly she shouldn't be teaching undergrad courses. She is a brilliant academic, but NOT a good professor. I had never gotten a "B" before her class, and not even my TA could explain to me why some of my test answers were "wrong.&q
DONT take this class. It's terrible, and so is the professor. She knows nothing about how to teach. Because of her class I refure to ever take another anthro class, and i cant see why anyone would ever want to be an anthropologist.
I had Zilhman for intro to Human evolution, Upper Div. human evolution and Primate behavior, and I can say she's tough. I've never work my ass off so much. Hard Prof, keeps you on your toes. She's a bit intimidating. She's the wall you have to climb over for that grade. Take caution. She's not easy
Zihlman is a great professor. Many sutdents hate on her because they are lazy and refuse to take responsibility that they do poorly in her classes because they don't put in the work that she demands. Zihlman is one of the few professors at UCSC who challenges you and makes you think critically!
Incredibly condescending. Says, "Excuse meeee...I hear voices coming from the back of the room," or "do you have a question?" when people talk. Her notes are not helpful, and she reminds me of a female Ben Stein. However, you do get to watch some really cool nature films in the class!
She is a frigid woman. Her tests are extremely difficult and she makes a potentially interesting class very dull. Before our last test, she said "ok, get all your talking out now before the test begins," and then when people started talking, she freaked out and demanded silence.
She's an amazing anthropologist but she should clearly be teaching an upper-level course, not an intro course. The class is almost designed to weed out students who aren't dedicated! I really feel that much of her material is irrelevant to the major.
If you want the type of teacher that will care less about you than she does about a peice of lint and you like learning anth through a coloring book, take Zilhman's class. worst class I took in my major
Absolutely awful as a professor. Her exams are unreasonably difficult. It's almost as if she doesn't want students to become anthropology majors. Her lectures are enough to make an insomniac fall asleep and everyone else scream.
I know I know, Alot of people probably gave Adrienne bad reviews but I think she was a really good professor, people hate on her because shes tough, but she really makes you think and doesnt hold your hand, shes not nice to students but why should she be, shes not supposed to be our friend.
Adrienne is a great professor. She is extremely knowledgeable in her field and is dedicated to helping students who really try. She doesn't waste her time with people who don't give it their all, which is why I think most students dislike her. Expect hard work from her, but it is worth it!

I got a D on the midterm that I thought I did well on. That freaked me out. However I ended up getting an A in the class. So don't lose hope. I think that she is very knowledgeable and obviously has a passion for the subject. On the other hand, she is very intimidating and harsh on her students.
Adrienne is very knowledgable, obviously loves her work. doesn't like talking. From afar she seems to be a cold person, but when you talk to her, she's very helpful. love your TA, let them edit your t. paper, and see her in her office hours for one good conversation and you've got an A.
Professor Zilhman is possibly one of the firmest and hard pressing teachers I've come to encounter. Her attention to focus on detail is unique and inspired me to become and better learner and observer. I do believe she has certain control issues stemming from her but, overall, she's cool if you ge
I am very glad that this is not the first anthro class that I had to take. It would have made me want to stop being an anthro major. Although Adrienne is very knowledgeable, she makes her class impossibly hard. It would have been a nice courtesy to have multiple choice tests.
The class was interesting, but she is an awful professor. I fell asleep in the class literally every lecture because her voice is so boring. I got a B- in the class even though I thought I would fail it, which I guess is good, but you shouldn't have to settle.
This woman should not be teaching a lower div course. I wish I had taken this class w/Galloway. She is unapproachable, & seems reluctant to teach. I often felt like I learned much of the material through my TA. I strived for a C, and normally get As and Bs. Zihlman's delivery of the content SUCKED!
dont do it
If you really want an F in college i suggest you take this class.
Adrienne was interesting. Her lectures are ok,and she's pretty funny (dry). It's cool that she wrote the textbook (helpful) and if you do the homework and take notes in lecture you're pretty set. Section is really boring. The TAs are cool grad students tho, get them to grade your ppr.Not too hard an A.
She is out right mean to her students. Her teaching technique is to give an obsene number of journal articles to read and then expect you to know every tiny detail. She is frusterating because she is no help when asked. I am an A student and I will be happy to pass this class.
tough class, lots of reading, be prepared to study a lot if you want to do well, falling asleep in class is really easy, tests are tough--you really need to know your stuff, but a good grade is possible if you work hard.
She has a unique lecturing style that takes some acclamation. Office hours is a must, although don't expect her to keep the convo going. Obscene amt of reading. Doesn't check the coloring book. 90% of the class changed to P/NP after the first test.
The TAs are wonderful. The prof isn't. Lecture isn't terrible, and you will learn, but your grade will be bad regardless of this, the TAs will be unable to help you, and Zilhman won't care to.
Adrienne is demanding. She is a dedicated teacher, tho many students found her obscure. The articles are manageable if you try. Office hours help
adrienne zilhman is perhaps the worst teacher i have ever had. she makes class incredibly boring, is defensive and lashes out at students during lecture, makes her tests impossibly hard (my housemates and i, A students, crammed all weekend and FAILED the midterm and final). the grad students are the only way to pass the class.
Her tests were hard but I learned a lot from her class. You have to pay attention and go to class and sections to do well. Overall, the class is a challenge but I thought it was worth it.
worst teacher ive ever had..reminiscent of grade school:we had coloring books for homework and she is condescending and rude. Lectures are bland and rote and she seems to hate her job. She in no way prepares you for the test, so get some help. Her tests are designed for grad students yet she thinks coloring will be sufficient prep! Dont do it!!!!
Teacher knows the material, she is a bit cynical. Addresses topics well in class, will assist outside of class. Assignments are clear but some are excessive. Good professor, she just doesnt appear very enthusiastic.
Anth 1 is the best class, but be ready to work HARD. Adrienne is a demanding teacher. She's got the "I was a women in this field when there weren't women in this field in Berkeley in the 60's, and if you're a woman you have to work ten times as hard to prove yourself" mentality. She will teach you to think critically, though, and write well.
Hard but good.
I do not like one thing about this broad. Fromt he way she teaches to the way she looks at people. Straight to the point, your not smarter, your not better, your just older.
Horrible. People would ask questions in regards to things the whole class didn't understand and she wouldn't try to help- but instead would leave you to squirm and struggle. HORRIBLE!!!
She was very unenthusiastic and just plan sucked! The set up of the class allows you to not go and still pass by doing all the work.
Her tests are incredibly difficult...all essay questions, and she's grades ridiculously hard. Most of the class failed the first exam.
Adrienne, while being one of the scariest teachers I ever had at UCSC, knows her stuff. I learned a lot more in her class (mostly because I was terrified of her random questions to those who did not look awake enough, and at 8am who could blame them) than
She is the devil. What teacher enjoys failing over 60% of her class. Never take a class with her, even if you are enticed by having a coloring book as your text book. It's not worth it!

Non-stop powerpoint presentations, mandatory coloring (in a book that she wrote and will undoubtedly receive royalties from), and clueless TAs. This class was WORTHLESS. I took this course in Fall '04, got a D, and my nazi-esque parents forced me to withdraw from the university (I was a sophomore). Life has been HELL since! DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!
as an intro to my major it scared the beejezzus out of me. She never answered student questions, which for her information, might actually help us to learn. There were a couple of interesting tidbits that I gleaned from the class, but they were mostly learned as the result of trying not to fall asleep in lecture. Also, the amount of stupid coloring book pages (that you end up not reading cause your hand is cramping from coloring) was rediculous.

Jesus christ. I've only had this class for about 3 weeks or so, and i hate it. There are some interesting things she mentions but she relys to heavily on the assumption that we read every bit of text she assigns. She tends to go through her slides like she's being chased by a car full of loan sharks looking to put her to bed with the fishies. especially those with long words that have unsure spelling. She also drops names constantly and it's hard to look past that to retain the important information.
sometimes she acts like we are all little kids, and shes mean. definitely NOT hot.
What teacher stops there entire lecture to call you out for talking? This is not high school. She's horrible and unhelpful. Hard class for it being just an "Intro." Even the TA's dont like her.
She is really rude and actually stops class to yell at people. Her lectures are inconsistant with the section meetings and i'm so unprepaired i'm almost positive that i'll fail the class. I HATE IT!!!
wut everyone else said. besides the positive things.
Prof. Zilhman taught one of the most interesting courses I've ever taken. Yes, it was difficult but this was the only class that I got the most out of. It's been awhile since I've graduated but out of all the classes I took at UCSC, this was the class I got the most out of. Don't kiss her ass, but if you respect her, she'll respect you.
Adrienne Zihlman is the WORST teacher ever. All she talks about is Charles Darwin. She gives little direction to the class and after a quarter of Anthropology... i STILL don't know what it is we were supposed to learn. NEVER take this class, even my academic counselor gave me a sympathetic look when she learned i had Zilman for Anthro.
everyone rags on her WAY too much. your ta grades you anyway. she was a good lecturer, a bit boring and i fell asleep sometimes, but she had GREAT films, and the subject matter is very interesting. she cares a lot, and so should the students. come to class, go to section, color your pages [that part is dumb i'll admit] and you WILL pass.
PRETTY BAD! If you are looking to learn about human evolution dont take it with zhilman. She spends about a week on actual human evolution, the rest is just evolutioin in general. Shes too wrapped up in herself. SHE HAS HER OWN COLORING BOOK. Have to study like crazy if you want a decent grade. Kindergarten teacher from hell. coloring, book report.
****! Yells at people for asking questions. Tries to mess with you about quizzes. Interesting subject, but would be better if it were taught by anyone but her and Hitler.
Worst professor i have had in college thus far. Unclear on assignments, Quizes on information that has yet to be discussed, SHE IS A ****, DONT TAKE ANY CLASS FROM HER... 10year for the win.
****ing ****!
She's a ****ing genius, yet the trickery she uses as a tactic to teach is unecessary. It would be nice if her goal was to teach instead of showcase, and the info divulged was clear. Left virtually everyone confused. A failed educator, but awesome anthropologist!
Her tests were all essay-based. She did not allow our TAs to give us a review because that would make it "too easy" for us. Our textbook was a coloring book. However, some of the course material was really interesting.
She is difficult, yes, but clear in her high expectations. She gave immediate feedback and was the only professor I ever had who helped me really learn how to write well and think critically. One of my favorites!
meanest teacher i have ever seen, called people out and yelled at them during lecture, i bet she has bad karma
um she just kind of sucks, too much bs in her classwork. i don't see how coloring help me learn anything, it was just a waste of time.
I'm surprised after reading comments written 2 yrs ago that she hasn't changed much. Still yells at talking students, flies through power points and talks down to students. Im studying for the final and feel like I am not going to do well even though I have gone to every class/section and studied hard. If only Id read her reviews before I signed up
Zihlman is BRILLIANT. It's obvious she knows her stuff, she's been in the field for years, and she's a very organized lecturer. The class is very hard, but this is college. Don't take it for the GE; there are much easier classes than this, but you will definitely learn a lot about phys anth if you care to. Expect a lot of interesting reading.
I was expecting something much worse after reading the other comments. Zihlman is stern but she knows what she's talking about and doesn't let anyone push her around. The workload was large but the grading was fair. TAs were very helpful.
She may know her subject, but perhaps she should stick to research. Her lectures were very hard to follow. So much information is thrown at you-and it was made clear that it would all be on the ALL essay final -the only test. She makes it too hard for lower division. She regularly belittles her students if she thinks a question is unworthy.
a) 1pg paper due every monday based on readings from about 4-5 eRes articles. BAD, very bad. b)A Hugh book report, took me about 2 weeks to do it well. c)And a hard final consisting of all essays and a map. Don't take this class just to fulfill a GE, not worth it.
Not that someone as brilliant as Zihlman needs my defence, but if any of these negative shmucks had taken the time to approach her and catch a glimpse of the passion she has for Anthropology, there is no way they would have remained so cynical and uninspired. She is stern and challenging, but will teach students who want to be taught.
I hate her as a professor. Most of her info is out of date. She is quite boring and her grading is strange. There isn't much reading. She acts as though she's the smartest person in the world...
Difficult, but passionate about her work and expects her students to engage with the material. Most people only know her from Anth 1, but to really appreciate her knowledge on the subject you have to take 101. Great feedback on papers. Love how she brings in current issues to class. Take this if you want to understand evolution/phys anthro better.
Her teaching is tough, and she has no interest in unmotivated students. But Zihlman's contribution to physical anthropology is invaluable. Her senior seminar on Chimpanzees was much more enjoyable than her LD class on Human Evolution. Go talk to her, she's really neat.
I'm not sure why I'm writing this almost 2 years after the fact, but you really have to listen to those who say that Professor Zihlman is incredible... if you get to know her. I have no idea why, but I decided to take that chimplass when I didn't know a damn thing about Physical anthro. She barely passed me. I still think it was a good experience.
I'm the person from the last rating. I guess we can't edit our ratings. Anyway, the class I took with her was the senior seminar on chimpanzees. It came out as a weird typo. Anyway, you have to be pretty damn stupid to take her class and expect an easy A. Those who complain about her already know this. She is far less rude in upper div. classes.
If you sign up for her class and you are not an anthro major just RUN AWAY. SHe knows her stuff but expects us to know what she knows within a quarter. The tests are difficult. She is a rough grader. And she will work you hard. If you are not willing to work hard RUN!!!
Phys. Anthro major class of '05. Zihlman by far was the best professor in Anthro Dept I've had. She pushes you and expects a lot from you. She is quite approachable, had her for 4 different classes, still thank her to this day for writing my law school recommendation.
She knows everything about the subject so well she can rattle off everything from memory, including the pages where things appear on all the readings and scholarly articles. Definitely not a class you want to take unless it's your major, but you will appreciate the learning experience if you survive the class.
Never grades papers, only number grades are on midterm, the rest is just alot of very vague comments on one page ten minute in class papers for all ten weeks of class. Your only hope is to be as descriptive as possible. Negative and scary in class, makes students feel stupid
Honestly the best class I have ever had. I worked my ass off for a B+ and it was worth it. She is simply the best in the field and is not given enough recognition. She spent time researching grad programs for me; she really cares, which is not the case with most professors. The top prof in this dept. hands down.
I was dreading taking this class. Theory of physical anthropology sounded horrible. But Adrienne made physical Anth engaging and interesting. Even though I got a B in her class I don't regret taking it for one second. She is amazingly helpful and although the class itself is difficult I found it rewarding.
A formidable woman who clearly knows her stuff. She's was a very dry lecturer for this l.d. class, so it will help if you have an interest in the material before you sign up for the class. Difficult class, but I respect her as an anthropologist. The only issue I had with her is that she is clearly obsessed with Darwin- she treats him like he is God
She never flips back to previous slides and doesnt put them online either so you have to go to lecture. And READ THE READER!
Adrienne is very knowledgeable, but extremely pretentious and rude towards students. Class is interesting, but you have to work very hard keep up. Worked my butt off for a B+. Very informative class, but miserable teacher-student relation.
Not amusing whatsoever. She goes by fast and doesn't give enough time to completely copy her many powerpoints. Knows her stuff, but made me not stick to anthro.
Very intelligent anthropologist, but not a great professor. Is not clear about her expectations & marks you down when you don't read her mind correctly. Calls people out for whispering brief questions & drinking WATER in class. Talks down to students. Hardly ever lectures, expecting you to get the bulk of your info from readings & in-class films.
She is patronizing and makes it hard for one to really like the material. She is so arrogant and is unapproachable. I really wish I would have taken Human Adaptability. Going to class is important because she has random assignments and quizes. Just don't take her. She knows her stuff but cannot teach it to students. She needs to retire!!!
Zihlman is the wicked witch of the social sciences. She makes her tests sound like they are going to be easy but it turns out the majority of the class does horribly. Her grading policy makes no sense, and she literally owns the same jacket in 50 different colors. She gets extremely annoyed at late students and as said before, no food or water.
Ater reading the other comments, it's clear they did not take advantage of office hours. She has been extremely helpful not only in explaining what she expects on tests and writings, but also helping me with grad school prep, field schools, and just sharing her experience. Yes she and the class are hard but worth the effort if you're into Phys Anth
Uptight, condescending, and uninspiring. I have had two rather unpleasant personal interactions with her, neither fueled by any wrongdoing or disrespect on my part. Maybe she's just not a morning person, but she should consider that before offering 8 am lectures. My blood still boils thinking about that coloring book too.
Adrienne Zihlman is perhaps one of the most intellegent professors at UCSC. Her Knowledge in the feild is second to none. But when it comes to her teaching style its all down hill from there. She is not clear on what she expects you to know for tests just says "all the chapters you read" as if that helpful.
Was very nervous to take this class and found it wonderful!! She really prepares you for the rest of your anthropology career if you focus on physical/biological. You MUST attend class and study. The coloring helps, even if it hurts your hand. She DOES tell you what will be on the test.
Students really need to quit blabbering about Adrienne's strict policy on water, blunt criticisms, and wardrobe! Students are too sensitive, petty, and lazy to realize what a brilliant teacher, original researcher, and well respected female role model she is in the field! Go to her office hours and take her seminar to see who she really is!
I can't understand the ratings below. I think they largely reflect the sorry state of undergraduate education rather than the flaws of a particular professor. Why would you expect someone to tell you exactly what is on the test? Surely we are there to learn and gain knowledge to understand the subject thoroughly. Fantastic professor, great class.
She is the best professor I've had so far at UCSC. She is brilliant and inspiring and honestly the only complaint I have about the class are the obnoxious undergrads who constantly complained about how "hard and mean" she was. People need to get over it, she is intelligent and is truly passionate about the subjects she teaches and is very helpful.
I happened to be one of those rare seniors in Zihlman's Anthro1 course. The class was beyond miserable and not so much because it was "hard" but because she treats the students as if this were their first college course. Tedious readings and coloring exercises served little value-- lowdiv course took away from my uppdiv & research
Zihlman was the best professor I ever had. Her class might be difficult;however, you'll feel a lot smarter once the class is over. Tests are difficult and the coloring is useful, but you'll waist a lot of time. I probably failed the course, but I would take her class again if I need retake it!
Stay away!! Her test are unfair! On lecture she blabs about interesting topics that are almost never on the test. Do your gpa a favor and take something else
You can go to class everyday, take great notes, go to her office hours, do the readings--and yet when it comes to her exams, you're in the dark. There's no form of study guide or anything to prepare you, her exams are extremely difficult. READ THESE WORDS--this class is difficult to PASS, not "get an A in". You won't get an A.
Sometimes when I read poor reviews of teachers on this website I'll think to myself, "Maybe those blue sad faces were written by slackers, I'll be able to do well in this class!" I walked into Zihlman's class with this enthusiasm. Now my GPA is lower and I regret ever taking a class with her. STAY AWAY.
Do not take a class with her if you are not passionate about the subject. If you are, THERE IS NOTHING BETTER YOU CAN DO FOR YOURSELF! Zihlman is a God of her work. She is brilliant. She is so brilliant. Try keeping up with her and regardless of your grade, you will begin to think of the world in ways that you never have before. Zihlman, you rule.
This was my 3rd Zhlman class and I loved it (as well as the others). She is terrifying and amazing. I wouldn't change her for the world. Go to her office hours and study more than you've ever studied before! It is tough, but you will learn so much from her. She expects a lot from her students, so she will call you out on your BS.
A while back during a lab test I found one of the bones was incorrect. I told the teacher and she just pocketed the bone and walked out. There was also a couple who both studied together and had virtually identical tests, the only difference was 15% grade difference because the guy helped keep time in class (warning when class almost over)
Easily the worst professor I've taken in my whole academic career. She had a "no drinking water" in class policy. When I told her I was a psychology major, she almost seemed offended because I was not an anthropology major. One of the students raised their hand during the final she started at him and said "WHAT?!" Would not recommend.
