Ms. Whelan is one of those teachers that truly loves the subject she teaches. She is European, and really loves looking at and talking about art. Overall the class is pretty easy. Very little memorization required, its more about understanding concepts. Class is done using images on an overhead.
Pretty easy, not alot of studying required, she is willing to always help in any way she can
Love the class and love the teacher. Again the class is based on her power point slides but they are intersting. She is very passionate with her class and it shows. She is also VERY nice and friendly, just don't try and take advantage of her, she will call you on it. (No personal exp.)
If you are interested in art, or anything pertaining to it, you may be able to stay awake in this class. If not, bring a pillow. She's an extremely nice lady who is very passionate about what she does...but is sometimes hard to understand, due to her European accent and extremely boring.
The class is boring as****, but her exams are extremely easy. Her exams are straight from the powerpoint notes, and if you study the day before the exam- changes are you'll do really good. It's also helpful to go to class, because it will give you an idea about what the notes are talking about.
She was very hard to understand and didn't give fair quizzes...
Class is fairly easy... just go to class and get notes from slides. Dont expect her to accomodate students when problems arise though, she WILL not work with personal issues.
Easy class - really a b.s. class. Easy A, and if you don't get one, it's really your fault. Don't bother trying to listen or pay attention; the tests are mostly common sense.
Her class is dreadfully boring; kind of hard to understand--French(?) accent; Very passionate about art; Lectures based on pp slides; Tells you exactly what will be on the exams; Unless you are very interested in art history, you WILL fall asleep in this class...GUARANTEED!!!!
She is SO passionate about art and just loves to talk about it. She has a POLISH accent, but to me it made the class more interesting. If you care about art at all, you will enjoy her class. Just go to all the lectures and go to blackboard for slides and grades and you're set for an A = )
she was nice. all i have to say is dont take the class if youre taking it for your art requirement. its a class that you actually need to study for and pay attention to what she says for papers. she was nice and passionate. pretty nifty lady.
easy class as long as you study the slides :-P and dont mess up on the papers :)
Polish lady, really easy class, attendance matters.. cant miss more than 7 classes, puts her lectures up online, really a common sense class, will get an A, if you dont, you are truly special
Didnt have to ever go! Very boring if you did go! Cant uderstand or hear what shes saying.
Very nice lady, she is polish and has an accent but is not at all difficult to understand if youre listening. Tests are easy-straight from powerpoint which you can get on blackboard.
She would make you three tests and the final plus one paper, and she would give you two chances to turn it in so you can improve your grade. She is very helpful especially with the papers. You have to study for her class her test are not complicated if you study and have all the class notes.
She is polish, so she has an accent. It's not hard to understand if you're paying attention. You have 3 tests, the final is extra credit. You have to visit 3 museums and write papers which takes no time at all. Her lectures are on blackboard which help with studying. Just look over the slides repeatedly for an hour or two and you'll have an A.
If you don't drink coffee, I highly suggest you start before taking this class!! You WILL fall asleep in this class!! This class is SO boring!!Professor Whelan is a nice teacher, but she has a polish accent, which makes it difficult to understand her lectures. Her tests are not too hard, but I suggest you study!
I took this class at 8am....BAD IDEA LoL...shes extremely boring but shes so nice you cant even get mad at her!! Jus read her powerpoints before the test and you'll pass! Make sure to study the pictures and the names associated with them!! Very helpful, but she deducts 3 points from your final grade every time you miss class!! SOO JUST GO!!
Prof. Whelans class was actually kind of interesting. I slept a lot...NEVER do a 8 am with her! She helps a lot if u need her. Just read the lecture power points and do the art gallerys, I received an easy A in that class. It was sooo easy!
Spunky little woman. You struggle to hear her sometimes because she doesn't seem to know how to control the valume of her voice. Tests are pretty easy as long as you take notes in class. There is alot of reading, but most of it just restates what you learn in class. She gives you a paper, and that's hell!grades papers oddly, be careful!
This class was just a general requirement, but I thought Dr. Whelan was pretty interesting. She loves to call on random people in class. A lot. We watched a fair amount of movies as well. The class is only 3 tests and 4 1-page gallery visits. Not bad at all.
She really knows how to keep the lecture interesting, and if you're listening you can catch some of her little comments. She calls on random people but that's good because you can get participation points. Her tests aren't bad, just study a little bit.
Great Teacher! Prepared, organized, interesting, and very, very helpful. She is truly what a teacher should be! I will be taking her again in the future!! Always study and attend class!!!
I've had so many prof's through the years- but I will re-examine her thoughts and lectures probably until I am dead or senile. If you listen closely, and not talk or sleep- you can gather some incredible life tools from her and the relative nature of art. I love the way she calls out "You there, Chappy!"
Professor Whelan is the most enthusiastic and knowledgeable teacher I have ever had. Her class is truly interesting. Go to class, take lots of notes (especially for exam 3), and pay attention because she likes to randomly call on people. If you do these things, you will undoubtedly get an A+. Easy exams and no need for the text book!
She is such a sweet lady! Her class is kind of boring, I slept through it. Just study for the tests and it will be an easy A
The easiest A you will ever get! Just attend all the lectures, do your papers and read the blackboard slides before the exam and you will get A. She teaches with a lot of enthusiasm and that makes the class more interesting. If you do it you can get a 101.2 avarage on the class!
I really enjoy her classes (I've had three with her) and she's really helpful. Study the powerpoints, have her critique your paper a few weeks before it is due, and show up for class then you get a guaranteed A in the class. She hands everything to you on a silver platter- seriously. If you don't get a good grade it's your fault. She's AWESOME!
Professor Whelan is wonderful! She is very helpful and quite entertaining. She has a lovely Polish accent that just leads itself to bringing interest to the subject matter even if is isn't something you are too interested in to begin with. She always cares about her students and how we are doing, plus she is amazingly knowledgeable about the sub
Professor Whelan is a great teacher. A little difficult to understand at times, but her passion for the subject makes up for her accent! Her depth of knowledge is amazing. Be careful - she LOVES to call on random people in class. GO TO CLASS. Tests are MC straight from her LECTURES. Do not buy the book. You must print the PPTs and take notes!
SHE IS A VERY NICE TEACHER AND VERY HELPFUL. HER POWERPOINTS ARE ALL ON BLACKBOARD. THE CLASS SHOULD BE AN EASY A. THERE ARE 3 TESTS AND 4 PAPERS BUT THE PAPERS ARE ALL TURNED IN AT ONCE ON A DIFFERENT MUSEUM. ITS VERY EASY. YOU CAN TELL SHE HAS A PASSION AND INTEREST FOR WHAT SHE IS TEACHING.
her class is super easy and she is really nice she dosent take attendance i never went to class only on the day of the test and i got an A
I never went and got a B. The tests are extremely hard so you really have to study. 4 papers are due at once, 1 page each on a different museum. Super easy and raised my grade dramatically. She is super nice and sweet but she isnt the clearest person on the subject. Read and go over the powerpoints and you should do fine.
Whelan was the easiest class Ive ever taken if you don't get at least an A in that class reconsider college. Like everyone else said don't waste time on the book, I don't even know what the cover looks like and I got an A. Attendance is not mandatory and there's no need to go check out the power points and you'll be good on test.
She's very nice and happy. Easiest class of my life.
TAKING AMAZING NOTES IS THE KEY TO THIS CLASS. SHE OVERLOADS YOU WITH INFO YOU JUST HAVE TO PICK OUT THE IMPORTANT STUFF. SHE IS REALLY REALLY HELPFUL IF YOU TALK ONE ON ONE. THERE IS ALSO NO (REPEAT, NO) FINAL EXAM. JUST 3 TESTS (40 M/C AND 2 ESSAYS;1 SHORT AND 1 LONG) YOU ALSO HAVE TO WRITE A 3-4 PAGE PAPER. OVER ALL NOT BAD, NO ATTENDANCE TAKEN!
She is a nice teacher. I never went, but I'm about to pass with an A. Make this your earliest class, so that you can sleep in. She always has the test material online, so just cram. it's easy. She's actually pretty funny sometimes. The class is really boring though.
Attendance is not mandatory. Gives 3 exams, if you miss one she averages the prior exam grades. I studied, got 2 A's on the first two exams, and didn't come to class for the final half of the semester. There is an art gallery project that is annoying, but do it, and you will get an A.
She is simply the best
Mrs Whelan is an extraordinary lecturer, She is the very best instructor I have had so far. It is a pleasure to attend her classes
Nicest professor you will ever have! Her lectures are jammed packed with history, so you need to keep up with the reading to get all the actual art info. Be sure to read the additional readings - she does test on them.
I really, really like her.She is the best Professor I have had
She is a wonderful teacher.I never thought I would enjoy this class but she made it interesting and exciting
Best Professor in University
excellent professor
truly excellent
The best
Great course most helpful professor I have had
Great professor, best lecturers in university, extremely helpful
I really, really appreciate how helpful this professor is.Her lecturers are extremely well planned, crystal clear and she is generous with her time and always enthusiastic and encouraging
Her lecturers are crystal clear and she is enthusiastic and encouraging
great professor! although you dont HAVE to go to class its highly recommned because some of her test questions relate to what she says in the lecture. all notes are on powerpoint which are then posted on blackboard. great teacher, HERE TO HELP YOU SUCCED
3 exams, all pretty easy if you study. Never went to class and got B's. She is Polish but her accent isn't that strong. You have to go to 4 museums and write 4 one page papers for 40% of your grade, very easy.
wonderful professorbest i have had
Easy class. Test come straight from notes (but if you want an A go to class). 1 project: go to 4 museums & write short essay about 1 work you see. I think all together the essays equal 1000 words. Caution: She inputs everything in blackboard as a 0 until she has a score. It will make your grade look lower than it actually is.
The most amazing teacher I had last year!
Come to class and you will receive an extra 10 points on top of your final grade. You have to attend 4 galleries and write about them. The test are all multiple choice and the final is optional. She does have an accent but you adapt to it fairly quickly. Overall, a good class and easy A.
This class was a breeze. If you come to class and pay attention there will be no problems. If you dont come to class she post the study guide on there so it will take some studying. She did require you to visit and write papers about 4 museums. Still nothing hard at all. Each had to be one page. She is very nice and enjoys teaching.
This class is an easy A. But I suggest you try to attend class as best as you can to get really good grades on the exams. There aren't really notes to write at all, you just have to listen in class. You don't even need to read the book, as long as you attend class, pay attention, and write all the gallery papers.
She is awesome at using details and getting into the lecture. She also posts study guides for the exams during the beginning of the semester. 1 paper, which is not difficult; however she also provides assistance.
This was my first art history class ever. Dr. Whelan is very passionate about art but it can be awkward to see that a lot of the students don't share her enthusiasm. lol The paper is pretty easy. If you go to class & take notes, you'll do fine on the 2 tests. I just liked the class for the pretty pictures :)
The content was interesting, but I often dozed off in class. As long as you are familiar with what was discussed in class and use the study guide the three exams are too easy. She gives a lot of freedom in the final paper and is always available to help.
She is an amazing professor and loves what she is doing. She has been around the world so she is able to give more insight on certain places and topics. Her enthusiasm is contagious so watch out!
Such a great professor! Take her class!
Professor Whelan really loves what she teaches and it shows in the lectures. As long as you read the chapters in the book and go over the review questions the tests are very easy. The 4 papers only have to be 250 words each. Easy class and she's a great teacher!
Art isn't my thing, and of the classes I took, this was the sacrificial "skip to study" class. She takes attendance only because the university requires her to do so (when she remembers to pass the sheet around, that is). That said, she makes it as interesting as she can and she's clearly enthusiastic.
Very interesting class. Read papers on field trips to fine art museums, exhibitions, etc. had a geat time!! Learned art history too!!
Professor Whelan is very passionate about the class which makes the lectures somewhat. However, on many occasions I have dozed off or got lost when she was talking. She sometimes randomly picks on a student to give their opinion if their is no class participation but is nice about it. The class itself is very boring and the tests are confusing.
Dr. Whelan is hilarious. She is from Poland and has a somewhat thick accent, but I got used to it pretty quickly. She's very witty and has a great sense of humor. She made the subject interesting. Super easy class. 3 tests, 4 gallery papers (250 words each), and lots of opportunities for extra credit.
I LOVE HER! She was such a huge help! Take advantage of extra credit it because its added onto your final grade and will really bring it up. I had a 90 and my grade was pulled up to an 100 because of extra credit. She is amazing and really cares about her students and wants you to succeed. If you don't like art before this class you will after!
She wants her students to do well, all that she asks is that you do the reading outside of class, and show effort. Attendance is mandatory and you will be penalized for missing class UNLESS you have a doctors note. She is willing to help you on any assignments. Take her class even if you aren't into art history.
You're supposed to read chapters for each class; however, if you pay attention during lecture you may be able to get away without reading. Easy grader on written assignments, and very accessible outside of class. She wants her students to succeed, and she's very passionate about Art History!
Dr. Whelan encourages her students to really think about the subject. Every now and then she'll arrange days to meet at the museums and truly experience art. I've come to appreciate those days as well as the kind of professor she is! A 8-10 page essay is due by the end of the semester but she's seriously always ready to help you. Learned a lot too
literally most horrible class i have take at this school. she is a great teacher but does not AT ALL clearly identify what is on an exam. and the exams are like 6-8 chapters which is 200 pages and 100's of ppt slides. How do you study for that? why did I spend more than 15 hours a week on a gen ed that does not relate to me whatsoever. B+/A student
Dr. Whelan is awesome! I took her for 121A Intro to Visual Arts and ended up with a final grade of 100. She offers ample extra credit which then goes on top of your final grade at the end of the semester. Attendance is mandatory or else she takes off one point from your final grade for each absence. Other than that its an easy A!!!! TAKE HER!
Her class requires 3 papers, 5 quizzes and 3 exams. If you turn in your papers with following instruction, you can easily get 100%. In case you couldn't get high score from this course, she gives us lots of extra credit activities which are directly added to your final grade. I got 92% but my final grade is 100% due to extra credits.
Her lectures are long, but she is so passionate about the info that it doesn't seem too bad. Took her in the fall (2016). Definitely go to class and take notes if you want to pass. It's a good idea to do all of the reading too. It might be a lot, but the little info may pop up in the quizzes or tests. However, her lectures usually cover them though
The quizzes require blue scantrons but there are no paper versions. They are displayed on the projector and you get 30 seconds to 1 min to answer each question. Heavy accent other than that nice teacher. Make sure you have your page of notes each reading quiz, on the quiz she says notes are not allowed but on the syllabus she says you can use them.
Sorry super late on this rating but when I took Dr. Whelan she was super chill. I took several classes with her and definitely finished with A's in both courses. On that note I never read anything and I took some notes passed all tests and quizzes with high Mark's. Tests are not hard. Oh and I did not go to every class and still did very well.
very lecture heavy!! but tests and quizzes are easy
She was definitely my favorite professor!! Always happy and caring and gives amazing lectures!! No textbook, no pop quizzes, no final exam. I actually learned so much without trying really hard.
Professor Whelan is amazing! She's passionate about art and offers a ton of easy extra credit opportunities, so take advantage of them. The tests and quizzes are pretty straightforward, but if you're not willing to put in the extra time and effort to study for them, don't take her. She is super lecture heavy, so show up to class and you'll do fine.
I didn't go to class much and Whelan takes attendance on random days, however it is a big class so you just sign your name when the paper goes around. She takes one point off for absence. Whatever is on the quizzes will be on tests. DO ALL THE EXTRA CREDIT. I was going to fail but I went to 3 museums and passed 30 points extra credit. EasyA
I took Dr. Whelan's Asian art history class. Her love of Art history makes her an excellent professor. She is a tough but fair teacher. I don't memorize things too well, but I passed with an A. She does reviews before quizzes and tests and lets you ask questions. Her knowledge of Asian history and culture is phenomenal. This was a great class!
I absolutely love Dr. Agnieszka Whelan took her for Asian Art and passed with an A. If you don't do your work then don't take her class. She is ALWAYS willing to help you with your assignments. Great teacher!
She is an excellent professor that really cares about her students. She is so passionate about the material and her excitement is contagious. I took her 8 AM course, and even though everyone was tired, she found ways to make it exciting. Museum trips were fun and tons of extra credit.
Professor Whelan is a true gem of a professor. Her tests are based directly on the quiz questions and her optional lectures are very helpful. For all 3 of her papers, she allowed students to send her the papers beforehand for feedback, and gave great advise on how to improve the assignment. She is sweet and open to all questions/concerns
Greatest Professor Ive had so far. The class is extremely easy, you are able to retake quizzes, there are 3 exams I believe and they are based on the quizzes. You have to do a few essays but they are rather easy if you do your research and actually try. Shes very understanding when you have anything come up. I recommend taking this class!
Dr Whelan is one of the sweetest Professors at ODU! She is simply lovely and her assignments are pretty clear and straightforward. Quizzes can be retaken multiple times and the tests are questions for the quizzes. She gives good feedback and allows resubmissions for bad grades on essays.
Professor Whelan is one of the best professors you can probably have. Her class was extremely easy and her lectures weren't mandatory, it got to the point where no one showed up and I actually felt bad. If you want a easy non creative class for an art credit, this is for you.
2022 Attendance is required because she does make you do participation assignment in class before you leave. There are multiple assignments and one quiz every week. The class is extremely boring with death by powerpoint slides. People are falling asleep, being on their phones, and doing other classwork. You DO have to study for the quizzes.
Very simple and straightforward class, dont need much notes as long as you pay somewhat attention in class. Easy assignments with enough time in between each one. Average time to complete her work is 1-2hrs
Nice teacher but the lectures are so long with barely any dynamic information in them. The assignments are just a lot of busy work that is a hit or miss when it comes to interesting content.
This class was easy lots of quizzes, discussions, and assignments. The videos are long but everything can be found on quizlet so all the reading and videos are not necessary.
Shes the sweetest professor I've had... she is cheerful and enthusiastic about teaching. She quickly responds to emails and gives much help for anything. Its tedious material, but not difficult if you follow instructions. She gives LOTS of extra credit. Its hard to pay attention in class, but there are mandatory attendance assignments each class.
Dr. Whelan is one of the sweetest professors ever. She is very passionate towards Asian Art and is extremely knowledgable. She pushes students to think critically. If you are struggling, I suggest talking to her! She's always willing to help. She gives a lot of extra credit as well and wants you to succeed and learn.
the class is relatively easy, but it's a lot of writing. there are about 4-5 assignments per week, but the quizzes are fast (they are online) and she doesn't care about late assignments.
Very insightful, and replies to emails quickly. Forgiving if something is turned in late(no penalty). Overall a very fun and laid back course. Would definitely recommend this professor to anybody needing to fill an art credit.
Professor Whelan is super sweet and engaging. While the material can be tedious, she makes it manageable with lots of extra credit and chances to improve. unstuckstudy was a lifesaver for quiz prep.
Don't listen to any bad review on her! she's an amazing professor and is really enthusiastic about the topics. Her lectures are really interesting (even if I drift asleep time to time its my own fault). There is one big paper but she breaks up it into assignments so its less intimidating. Her quizzes and exams are super easy I've gotten a 100%
Professor Whelan is extremely passionate about art history and knows how to spark interest in it. I just needed the credit, but ended up enjoying this class and learning a lot!
Dr. Whelan is energetic and knowledgeable. In my experience, however, her encouragement to ask questions didn't always match how she responded to them which sometimes made further discussion feel discouraged. She is friendly, but can feel less approachable if your interpretation doesn't match what she expects. It's a style preference for me.
Professor Whelan is incredibly enthusiastic and open to all kinds of discussions. The lectures cover all the course content you could need to do well on the assignments. If you put in just a fraction of effort and give her some enthusiasm and human-courtesy back you should have no problems at all. She is incredibly kind and very knowledgeable!
Great professor, you don't need to attend the class. The exams and quizzes are easy as long as you take the practice quizzes. There are discussion posts or essays to do weekly but, they're easy to get done.
