Easy class :) Accent kind-of hard to understand though...
HARD TEACHER! Does not give study guides at all! Hard to understand!
Very difficult to understand, seems irritated when you ask ?s, treats you ba
Has no class objectives, irrates him to answer ??s, hard to understand
Hard to understand, mumbles with thick accent. Didn't learn a thing.
Very hard to understand with accent. Easy class but not enough review sheets. Crazy grading system he has. 100 points for Quizes which are 2 questions each, so if you get one wrong, you get an E!!!
you see my friend this is american...please speak english
Class was easy, Accent tough at times but he explained very well on the board.
he is simply cool
has a very bad accent w/ mumbling, willing to help students, lecture notes are too complex, (he takes them straight from the book), overall not one of my favorites
Dr. Assaf is very hard to understand and not willing to help students. He was hardy available for his posted office hours. He gets pissed when you keep on asking questions. This is America, so speak OUR language of English not your jibber!
Dr. Assaf was a joy! Very intelligent and knowledgable. He really cares about his students. Always available when you need him. His accent is charming and brings out his caring, sparking personality. I would highly recommend him. Easy "A."
Absolutly terrible...He thought we were "stupid americans"
Assaf was extremely hard to understand! When we didnt answer his questions he asked if we had pride in our country and our family.... what is he talking about! Does he have pride in his country!!?? Probably not.
VERY difficult to understand him. What the heck does 12/0 have to do with Algebra? Not willing to answer questions. If he doesn't understand you, he simply says that he doesn't and goes back to what he was doing. NOT fun.
I'm not ****, but I think that if you are going to teach in a predominantly English-speaking culture, you should be able to clearly speak English. Most of class time was spent trying to understand him.
I was not able to understand a single word he said. I found myself spending two to three extra hours a day simply going over what was "said" in class. Do not take him under and circumstance.
Agh! Impossible! He is sooo hard to understand, and smiles when he hands you back your paper, with a big "55%" on it.. *slams head on desk* Avoid at all costs..
You are better off on your own. Does not clarify the material.I spent more time trying to decipher what he wrote on the board. I recommend taking only sketchy notes in his class. The book explains the equations alot better. He has an odd personality.

WILL PASS YOU IN THE CLASS NO MATTER WHAT! All YOU HAVE TO DO IS TELL HIM YOU ARE ABOUT TO GRADUATE AND YOU NEED TO PASS. VERY EASY CLASS.
Prof Assaf presented the material pretty well, although you really had to struggle to understand him half the time! I got a B in the class, which is good for me, so it wasn't too bad.
very hard to understand his english at first but after that the course is not that hard. just go to class and he explains it all. his final exam was hard tho.
do not touch this class with a ten-foot pole.
He is very hard to understand because he can hardly speak english, and if you ask him a question he sometimes gets annoyed and starts talking even faster. He might be a good teacher if you speak arabic
Very good but sometimes hard to understand.
If you don't know much about stats don't take this clas.... He's really hard to understand.... But i'm sure you know that if you've read any other comment.
Hard to understand and sometimes a exam pops up because you never know what he is saying. Try to get a different professor if possible!
Yes he might be a little hard to understand but he is more then willing to help you. If you are not good in Math or Statistics I would take him he will make sure that you pass.
In my opinion, he makes the class a lot harder than it really is.
Mr. Assaf is a nice guy. But he makes this class WAY harder than it needs to be. On top of the fact that it's hard to understand him. If you don't end up getting a new professor, make sure you go to class, cuz he uses a lot of the examples on quizzes
Very hard to understand, not helpful at all, worst professor I've had yet
very nice , he explan evrey thing
He makes mistakes on problems and then claims that he is doing it to help you learn--some are actual mistakes though. He seems like a nice person and he even let me make up a exam ( I had to get a letter from my mom though!) If you are not super strong in math then I advise getting another teacher.
I think he is an extremely nice teacher and as long as you keep up with class & the assignments you will do fine. He also tends to grade on the easy side. I am no math whiz and I'm getting an A...I would definitely recommend him.
Dr. Assaf will let you use formula sheets for tests. He will use examples done in class on tests BUT the test questions will be the harder examples, and there will only be 9 or 10 questions worth 10 points a piece! While doing examples, he often skips some steps, so pay attention! But, his grading scale makes up for it (50% gets a D-minus).
the worst professor i've ever had!! you cant understand him and his tests are only 5-10 questions with each one being worth tons of points. one mistake can kill your grade. he ruined my love for math
Boring class. Bases grade off tests only
I thought that Mr. Assaf was a famulous teacher! He gives you study guides before the tests, DO THEM! If you dont understand, go into his office hours and he will definitely help you. Also: If you dont understand ?'s on a test, ASK HIM!! He helps, he honestly WANTS you to pass... Practice the problems in the book.. you'll be fine.
He is hard to understand. He doesn't always tell the same information the same way. Incredibly difficult to figure out.
Very hard to understand, besides that he gives quizes every other thursday which were take home for our class,if he gives you take home quizes go ask him if the questions are right before you turn it in..he will tell you the answer if you got it wrong. I would not recommend him at all. If you have to to Stat 282 take it with someone else.
Horrible professor. Me and my roommate are in the same class and he's so hard to understand. If you want to hear "Is that clear?" or "Questions?" every 2 seconds, then take the class, if not, take it with another teacher. We had our 1st take home quiz, it was only 3 questions, and he only taught us how to do one, Worth 100 points,Each one is 35.
This guy is terrible. You can't understand a word he says, he doesn't want to help you, he's boring, doesn't seem to care. Don't take this class with him, find someone else. He might know math fairly well, but he can't teach if you can't understand what he's saying.
You would be better taking a different teacher. He is hard to understand and jumps around WAY to much.
didnt learn a thing from this class and thought i would do well since i took stat in high school. he is hard to understand, not just from the way he speaks but the way that he presents information. if you try to go to his office to get help he will basically do your work for you.. but he doesnt explain any of it. i suggest a different teacher.
He knows what he's doing, but does not explain it well. Also, he talks very softly and is sometimes hard to understand. Quiz every other week, tests at end of chapters. Quizzes are take-home.
He is not easy to understand so sit as close as you can to the front of the room. He is odd but he can be funny. The only grades are take home quizzes and in class tests. For quizzes go to the math center or the SI sessions. He doesn't correct homework so quizzes and tests are important! study! and do the homework so the tests are easier.
he is harder to understand but if you sit closer to the front and what to learn something you will. he knows his stuff and once he feels comfortable in the classroom he jokes around and gives out extra credit. do the hw it helps you out when it comes to the tests.
He knows what he is doing, but he can not communicate to the class. He gives take home quizzes, but even with the help of math assistant or tutors the quizzes are impossible. He can't speak english very well so sit in the front row. I would recommend any teacher besides him...but if you get him do the homework and use the text book
DON'T TAKE HIM!!! he can't speak english and he doesn't care that his class average is a D-. Everything is "your" fault, even though he is the horrible teacher
OMG STAY AWAY! Literally can not understand a word he says, the first day i honestly thought he was speaking in a different language. Tests/quizzes are so hard that not even the tutors can get full points, he takes random deductions from problems with no explanation, just a (-18) wrote at the top, and makes you feel stupid if you ask a question.
NEVER TAKE THIS TEACHER!!!! More than half of the class Fails. He is impossible to understands and doesn't even care. If you ask questions he makes you feel stupid and quizzes and test are impossible. There is no such think as curving even though class averages are in the 30% range.
Overall he is a good teacher and a nice guy but if you pay attention and just do everything you are assigned you will do fine. Also his test are very hard and may scare you til you get it back he gives a lot of points for effort and know generally what you need to do in problems. He is hard to understand so sit close and you will do fine.
This guy is the professor I have ever had. It's extremely hard to understand him, he constantly needs to be corrected, and his class is very dull. I love math, but this professor made me dread coming to class.
dont take this professor unless you're fantastic at math. He mumbles a lot, and even though he says "questions?" every five minutes, he's terrible at answering questions. If possible take this class with a different professor.
DO NOT TAKE THE CLASS WITH THIS PROFESSOR he is absolutely horrible and the only thing you can understand what he's saying is "questions?" and "now and example." overall a horrible teacher.
have to keep up on the online homework and the online walk through, when you are doing the homework is more helpful than the actual teacher.
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR AT ALL COSTS!!! He can be a funny guy sometimes in class, but you almost can't understand anything. My suggestion is to try and find a different professor in order for yourself to learn something because if not you'll be doing most of the teaching for yourself...
Ahmed is a good guy and compared the the other Calculus teachers here is not too hard of a professor for this class. He has a very heavy accent which is his biggest downfall, but if you go to class and pay attention a good grade is easily possible. I can't say this was an easy class but he makes you work for it.
He has very poor english, very hard to understand what he is saying which makes learning extremely hard while in class. Count on just watching what he writes on the chalk board and blocking out his voice. He gives barley any homework and doesn't take attendance nor has he ever tried to learn anyones name. Prep to teach yourself.
Worst math class ever.
This is a hard class to begin with but taking it with this prof. makes it even harder. If you have the choice take with a different professor. Grades on 3 tests and a few quizzes. Strong accent and some words are hard to understand. Not a bad guy, just not a great professor.
Get a different professor for this course if you can. You cannot understand him and he does not go over everything that may be on the test. Do all the homework and do the practice tests he provides in order to do somewhat good on the exams. He is a nice guy but overall a terrible professor
Nice guy himself, but worst professor I've ever had. Gave us a blank test to study for our exam, but wouldn't give the answers so we didn't know what to do. He states this math is supposed to be easy & we should've learned it in middle/high school. He doesn't curve grades, or give extra credit. If you go & talk to him personally he can kind of help
Assaf made his course painfully easy. The pace very slow due to a substantial amount of hand-holding. Perhaps this is reasonable for a 100 level course but at the 500 level, he needs to be more rigorous and make his students put an effort in. I learned a little bit but Assaf needs to expect more out of his students.
Really not a great professor, but seriously an awesome guy! If you go and take the time to talk to him about your concerns, he will help you in every way! He is very traditional with his grading like doesn't put things in blackboard, but will help you out if you seriously have concerns. He really is caring!
Hard to understand, but easy course wise
Assaf is a super nice guy and while it takes sometime to get used to his accent, if you pay attention its not an issue. If you ask for help he has no problem walking you through things, even if he has to do it more than once. Super nice guy.
A small language barrier but you get used to it. Assaf is funny, kind, and is really passionate about math. This math class is way different from any I've taken before but if you do the homework and study it's a breeze.
His accent is a bit hard to understand, but I got used to it throughout the semester. He never grades the homework, but you should probably do it if you want to pass the tests. The only things in the grade book are a few tests and take home quizzes. He always gives practice tests and our final had questions directly from one of the take home tests.
When he assigned homework on WebAssign it usually isn't even relevant to what we are learning. Tough class, I showed up every day and still got a B. Wonders why we fail every test... DO THE STUDY GUIDES
Tends to change due dates on assignments often without notifying
He writes his own notes & tests. He posts the notes/hw on BlackBoard that are named random chapters and tells us to do the odd number questions whenever we finish a section which we never know what one we're on. Very strong accent. The tests will scare you, but always checks answers because I'll have the problem correct and have 0 credit given.
Terrible professor, his graders mess up on every test and homework assignment. Barley can understand him
Notes are hard to understand and he has an accent so thiccc that you can barely understand any words he says.
Worst class I've ever taken. He is a really nice person who is funny, but his teaching is awful and he is so hard to understand, especially with his accent. Grading was horrible and done by a grad student. I dropped the class and after money deadline so I will have to retake 107 again.
I took calc classes in high school, and even after that I couldn't understand a single thing we would try to get us to do. The schedule was just about non-existent and there's still no grades in. I'm definitely going to fail and honestly stopped going because I couldn't understand a word he says. It's not even all the heavy accent, just confuses me
It is very hard to understand him especially online. He is very-very bad at posting things online or telling you when things are due, I think he just chooses not to, the blackboard shell for his class is a mess and it's very difficult to find what you need. I emailed him like 3 questions and he replied "yes" to one of them.
10/10 WOULDN'T recommend this professor. You can't understand him most of the time. The lectures and homework don't correlate with the exams. He makes typos on the final and expects you to fix them in the last minutes of the exam. WORSE PROFESSOR EVER!!!!! It's not even difficult, he just so unorganized. If I could rate him a 0, I would.
He is genuinely a very nice man, and he tells some funny; albeit very strange; jokes and stories. He also responds to emails quick but they are hard to understand and he often doesn't understand your questions well. Tests usually have questions that are nothing like what we do in class and he is hard to learn from. Nice dude, horrible professor.
Horrible teacher. If you ever ask him a question he will never fully answer it plus when he emails you it looks like he's talking to you in a text. All of his assignments were word documents when he could've simply used my math lab. He would often put the wrong number in certain equations and then email everyone a new number and it still be wrong.
I emailed him several times about questions that I have had and he emailed me back with simple answers of yes, no. Then I emailed him a question about my grade and he acted like I didn't know what I was talking about. He isn't good with technology. he makes excuses when he makes a mistake.
The tests have a few questions that were never discussed in class. The professor is very hard to understand especially when online. The communication from the professor is not good and usually very unprofessional. Tests were not graded the same between students, you could have the same answers and completely different scores.
Very hard class. I used a lot of prior knowledge because he was not the best teacher. It was hard to understand his accent.
I would not recommend taking a course with this professor on the fact that he is extremely hard to understand. The content in class is from his notes, making It even harder to understand because nothing is thoroughly explained. He doesn't explain when someone asks a question. The actual content isn't hard, you just have to teach it to yourself.
He was hard to understand in class, and was terrible about posting things online outside of class. I would not know the dates of tests and quizzes until a few days (or even sometimes *the* day) before class, as there was nothing useful contained in his syllabus. Avoid him if you can, it will make your life easier.
He was a nice professor but talked with a very heavy accent so I could not understand what was happening. The content wasn't too bad but when you can't understand your professor it is really hard to learn.
Unfortunately, Dr. Assaf is the only one that teaches this course at CMU. So, good luck taking this course with him. He is not a good professor and is hard to understand. Notes don't make since, and you end up having to try and teach yourself the course material. He is not the most respectful towards students, he, at times, can make you feel dumb.
Cons: - Doesn't respond to students on WebEx, the only way to contact is through email - Doesn't prep you very well for tests/exams. Quizzes are easy and open book, but tests/exams are very hard. - Only resource he gives is scanned copies of handwritten notes. Pros: - Generous w/ grading (because you're struggling to understand the material)
Assaf is my dream professor for 3 reasons. 1. There is no homework for a grade 2. Quizes are open note 3. No attendance. What sucks is that he is SO boring, and the thick heavy accent doesn't help either. I've had profs w heavy accents before with no problem, but this guy man, the cadance in which he speaks makes me tune out as soon as I hear it
Cannot understand him when he talks but doesnt give out homework. i basically taught myself during this class.
I taught myself most of the information. It was hard to understand him. He was very nice but I couldn't it was too hard to understand him because of his thick accent.
He wasn't as bad as people made him seem. When explaining stuff he is sometimes all over the place, but if you show up and actually apply yourself, it isn't even hard. He is very nice, and will 100% help you if you need it.
Difficult class. Only a few take-home quizzes and in-class exams count to your grade. STUDY FOR THE EXAMS because they're worth a lot. Unclear teaching style which was hard to understand but he's very open to questions and is quick to respond to emails with questions. Overall difficult class and taught myself a lot but good guy
Lord have mercy for whoever has to take this professor. All the comments about the professor is true, this guy mumbles when he talks, so if you don't sit close to him you will probably never hear a single word coming out of his mouth. Very strong accent Grade is dependent on your exams. DONT TAKE HIM FOR MTH175 UNLESS you wanna learn it urself.
For MTH113, he really tries his best to teach, but it is very difficult to understand a lot of what he's saying with his accent. He encourages questions in class and to email him for clarification in the lecture. Honestly, I showed up to half the classes and used the E-BOOK to teach myself the concepts. Doesn't require hw but recommends it.
Professor Assaf cares about his students, but it was a struggle to get through this class. I certainly don't doubt that he knows what he is talking about, he just isn't very good at teaching/explaining the content. His class is unbelievably boring, good luck staying awake, and will explain & answer questions by responding with "use your eyes."
Not a good prof. Mumbles and also has a thick accent. He was not knowledgable in the subject and constantly made mistakes. If you do not teach the material to yourself you will fail. The entire course is dependent on 3 exams, one being the final, and a couple of quizzes, worth barley any points.
Such an amazing teacher to take online. Really cares about his students and wants them to succeed. 100 percent recommend taking him online.
Ahmed has a very thick accent that can be difficult to understand at times. I took MTH113 and attendance was not required. He gives homework for students to practice with but it isn't graded. He can get sidetracked occasionally. He really cares about his students and wants them to succeed. Ask questions in class and take good notes and you'll be ok
I'm ngl he is a very sweet man but omg you will not be able to understand him. Only three tests- one is the final. My advisor told me not to drop at the beginning of the semester and I hate that I listened to him because I failed the class. DO NOTTTTT take this class with this prof unless you are ready to teach yourself the entire semester.
Believe every review you heard from this guy. Really nice guy, however, SO HARD to understand! Heavy accent. The only positives is he'll allow open note for tests which is great but he's a slow lecture prof. If you have this class, switch to another professor because you will not understand a word he says
You just will not be able to understand him. He's really nice and easy to get along with but trying to learn from him is useless. On a positive note he curved the entire class grade so no failure.
Tough class, taught myself a lot. Professor had accent issues and unclear teaching style, but was open to questions. Used Unstuckstudy and other resources to prepare for the heavily weighted exams.
He's a really nice guy but that's it, I quit going to his class after 2 months and just gave up it was useless but he did curve the class to a C. I think no one actually would've passed his class without that tho so good luck if he doesn't curve your grades it was a work of god I passed that class
I thought he was super nice, and his class was easy. The only problem I had was that he has a thick accent so he is hard to understand, but I got used to it. If you did poorly and ask for a better grade, he will give it to you because he really doesn't care. He just wants you to pass probably so he doesn't have to teach you again.
