Man is this guy unreal. he is so clear in what he wants from you. He tells you to highlight passages that are potential exam questions, he never asks anything that he doesn't focus on. Go to class and you will do fine. The Analysis and writing skill are completely up to you, but it is no fault of his! Great prof! I got the highest mark in the class
He'z nice and the markings were fair.
Man, I love this man and I love his class!
Good prof. Material was a little limited, but otherwise very good.
BEST PROF EVER!!!! He's very clear in what he expects, and explains things very well! EASY MARKER! if you actually try and listen to what he says. ATTENDANCE IN THIS CLASS IS ESSENTIAL. Extremely helpful too if you need him to check over your essay before handing it in or something.
Very Good Prof,very funny
Very nice Prof, very funny, fun class.
Marks way too hard and expects too much out of his students. Most of the times he isn't clear on instructions for essays, and you never know what he expects. He did crack up some funny jokes, but he is just too unclear and a hard marker. I would never take his class again.
The class is way too hard, he have so much expectations. I suggest you not to take his class if you have another 4 classes.
Hard marker. Keep track of what he gives for examples in class. Better marks if you use his thoughts in your essays
OMG! DROP! DROP! DROP! NOTHING ELSE
I can't say he's bad. It's only that he has way too much work to do. We have reading quizzes every week and we needa hand in 4 essays. He is also a hard marker. He has a lot of expectations on his students which are sometimes unrealistic. English's not my first language, so I find it pretty hard to catch up in his class. Also, he uses books A LOT.
Not good for first years.
He's a reasonably tough marker, but the comments he gives are detailed and fair. He tries to be entertaining, though his class is sometimes quite dry. However, he demands weekly online postings on the moodle site which are extremely tedious, and, as its never handed in and judged as part of ones participation mark, are easy to forget.
Hard marker and expects alot from his students. You have to earn every mark in his class; even something as simple as participation marks turns into weekly reading quizzes, weekly moodle postings and class discussions. However, if you like English or are interested in improving your writing ability he is a great teacher and great at analyzing text.
I thought it was a very fair class, you get the mark you deserve. Attendance is a must! Also, he'll give you fairly obvious hints about what will be on the final, and definitely highlight and pay close attention to quotes he points out because part of the final is identifying three of those quotes
Absolutely horrid prof. Won't allow laptops in class, strict as all hell, and massive workload for a first year course.
Lots of reading to do (I would say too much. I've had to read 5 novels in the past two weeks). Attendance is mandatory. He's a pretty fair marker, but is often unclear on EXACTLY what he wants from you. Also marks you higher if you use his ideas rather than your own. I wouldn't take a class with him again, that's for sure.
HORRIBLE. Way too much reading, expects way too much of first years. (We had to read and cover a 200 page novel in 4 days. c'mon). Lots of Essays as well.
Dr.C was very interesting and fun prof. He had a good sense of humor and kept the class lively and fun. He did expect a lot from his class and had a very large reading list; however, it was do able. Pay close attention to grammar and don't be afraid to ask for some guidance. He respects your ideas and expects participation.
Funny teacher, fair marker, gives alot to read but if you show up to class, what he talks about is what he bases his topics on.
He's an OK guy but when it comes down to a first yr class he expects alot and doesn't give much time to do it in. He also loves giving LOTS to read. He's a hard marker, and pretty much walking into his class is like Hell. I tried to drop and now I am stuck.
I think he's a really good prof. He explains things really well and gives interesting points to stories. Does A LOT of readings, but all the readings were really interesting. However, he's a tough guy to impress in your writing. VERY VERY hard marker.
Horrible!!! Never take his class!!!!
Horrible teacher, he's jut rude. Doesn't actually teach you anything and never fully answers your questions. If your opinions different from his you fail. Way to intense of a course load for first year. Extremely tough marker. Drop this class!!!!!!
Dr Chowdhury displays a comprehensive understanding of the works analyzed, and is readily available for individual discussion. However he feels his opinion is always right and is ruthless in grading. Would not recommend, especially for your first year.
He gives you too much workload, he brutally marks, as well as expects way too much from you. He can be funny, but he can be so disrespectful. Although I do believe he made me a stronger reader, as a writer, I feel as though I've gotten worse because his feedback is completely useless and he doesn't explain what he wants from you. NOT RECOMMENDED.
Decent prof, very interesting discussions in lectures, funny. Does expect his students to do alot of reading in a very short period of time and is a hard marker, however if you work hard in his class and keep up with readings, you should have no problem getting a good grade. Recommended :)
way too hard a marker, the feedback he gives on your essays is useless, his expectations are SOOO UNCLEAR so you dont really know what youre doing wrong, its practically a sin not to bring your books to class, DO NOT RECOMMEND AT ALL
He expects a lot from his students and will not do the thinking you! Lots of reading, & is always open during office hours to look over your essay before its due. You need to attend class otherwise you will miss something really important for your essay. If you want to improve your writing and are willing to work hard, this class is recommended!
He is a difficult marker, that being said he is very reasonable if he knows you are trying hard. Go to his office hours with essay drafts, ask him questions, because he will bump up your mark a whole letter grade on an essay if he knows you worked hard. Far too much reading in his class though, you will barely have time for your other classes.
Great prof but attendance is definitely mandatory, as are the readings. He can be a hard marker in the beginning, but once he know's your trying and contributing to class discussions, you'll have no problem in getting a good grade.
really liked this prof! as long as you try hard and go to his office hours for draft revisions, youre guaranteed at LEAST a B-. just use his ideas, pay attention in class, and PARTICIPATE! great sense of humour. loved being in his class! thanks dr chowdhury! (:
marks essays hard. but his finals are really easy you have to know quotes and write only one esaay.
Really liked his style of teaching. Pay attention to class discussion topics - they're hints in disguise on important things to notice/think about. See him for editing on essays! Very helpful! Work hard and keep up with readings and the weekly blog posts & ur good to go! Liked his works for Engl122 better though, but they're not horrible for eng124
Great teacher, lots to share about the texts but you need to pay attention; abstract concepts expected. Thinking is required, don't expect to get off easy with minimal analysis especially on assignments and essays. He seems to like it when you can show intelligence and interest in discussing the texts. Don't expect anything, work hard and earn it!
Strict
I used to think he was a nice prof but as the weeks went on I started to really dislike him. When he marks your essays, his comments are always really rude and most of the time totally irrelevant. You can do your best work on an essay and still get a crappy mark - I would know - just because it doesn't "fit" his interpretations of a story. Bad prof
Interesting teaching style. He provides unique analysis into the texts which cannot be found on your own. He seems to genuinely respect the opinions of his students, and does not appear to deduct marks based on differing opinions. He does remove marks for not including ideas he found relevant, which is annoying.
Seems like a nice guy, but at the same time he is very dismissive of students with differing opinions. Incredibly hard marker for students just coming out of High School, and a lot of reading is required for this course. Attendance is mandatory. Also incredibly hard to get a hold of for help.
Starts out nice but he's actually pretty rude. Writes disrespectful and unhelpful comments on papers. Impossible to get a hold for help.
Professor Chowdhury is strict but it makes you work and if you work hard, you'll do just fine! Show him that you are trying, give your opinions because he'll actually respect that you are at least trying! Overall, i found him to be a great prof! Very organized and stays on top of things. He's very helpful i found!
Nice and friendly attitude towards students. Lectures and notes were pretty detailed. Essay assignments weren't too bad, but the final was a bit tough. Overall a pretty nice professor, would recommend.
Mr. Chowdhury was great. Classes were somewhat dull but easy, and he takes attendance. Essay topics were easy, marked very easily, and pretty much taken from the lecture notes. The final was a little tougher, but it was still fair. If you take your draft to his office hours, he will read it all and give in-depth feedback and suggestions.
He is good and interesting. To be honest one of the best professors I have ever had. He understands that not everyone is good at writing long essays but he does not care. HE JUST WANTS TO SEE THE EFFORT. He was very helpful whenever I went to his office. Kept 6 hours of extra office timings for essays just so everyone could attend. TAKE HIM! :D
One of the best professors in university. HELPS A LOT. Almost corrected my essay and told me what to edit before actually marking it. Very understanding.Had a very good time in his class. IF YOU ARE A PERSON WHO IS NOT GOOD IN ENGLISH BUT WILL PUT IN THE EFFORT. HE WILL RECOGNIZE THAT AND BE LENIENT WITH YOU. *PERSONAL EXPERIENCE*
Should not be teaching an introductory english class!!! Treats students like they are all English Majors. Also, he is actually quite rude to students. We had to do a individual presentation about shakespeare in front of the class. Worst experience ever.
This course wasn't about interpreting a story, it was about how to pose an argument and our one literary analysis fit that theme. Overall I found the format of his lecture to be pretty similar to what I had in high school and he was very approachable outside lectures and gave me some very good and clear advice on my essays when I did go. Good prof.
Mr. C is the absolute best!!!! he is so kind, entertaining and adorably awkward. His class is incredibly simple, as he explains everything he expects in detail and assignments are super easy.
Mr. Chowdhury is an amazing English professor. He is always willing to help and marks papers with considerate and helpful comments. He makes participation in class easy and fun.
One of the best profs I have had so far and quite funny. Class discussions are interesting and insightful with a lot of group work, which I quite enjoyed. This class really taught me how to write a proper university level essay and he definitely rewards for the organizational style he teaches. Also very helpful in making suggestions on you paper.
He is always willing to help with essays and the understanding of the texts. His class and chosen texts aren't boring either. Overall, very good prof!!
Great prof! I am not an english major and only took this course as a requirement and I can honestly say it was the first time I enjoyed an english course. Very helpful in and out of class, good sense of humor and texts weren't even boring. Very fair marker with tons of feedback. Definitely recommend his class!
Huge believer in participation. Takes the time to learn everyone's names. Nice guy, cracks a joke about once a month. He is very specific about what he looks for in a paper, and you'll get a bad grade if it's not precisely how he wants it.
Decent teacher. Takes attendance & knows names. He looks for participation, but accepts online participation without speaking in class. Decent marker, if you make an appt he is very helpful picking apart essays and will tell you exactly what to change. The only thing is he assigns all his classes essays at the same time so office hours are BUSY
He always has interesting points and discussions in class, with an easy participation 10% if you get involved. Ask for his assistance before your essays are due for him to proofread! Gives valuable insight and help. Would take again.
Really like him! He is helpful and to be an international student, he marks fairly. Recommend! Highly!
fair grader, and gives you good feedback (go to office hours and he will read your rough draft)! The texts chosen were pretty difficult, and just the discussions in class did not help me understand them much better. He hints at what is going to be on the final-PAY ATTENTION TO THIS! personally didnt like the majority of class time on discussions
Awesome teacher. All the readings are required and there are a decent amount of readings. Overall a great prof. Pretty okay marker. Attendance is mandatory. Class time consists of discussing the readings. Gotta read your stuff in advance and participate (add to the class discussions) to do well and understand the material. Would recommend.
Eng121 is not a easy class, but this professor is quite charming and makes class interesting. He lets separates students in different groups and pay attention to everyone! A very friendly and kind prof! You can make an appointment with him. If ur second essay is better than ur first one, he will give u a higher grade than before
makes things so complicated! I guess it helps with making better writers but he is an insane marker. He doesn't give you any credit for the work you do. Tough final!!!!
I learned more in 3 months with Ahsan than I did in 4 years with the same teacher from grade 9 -12. Ahsan is a great english prof and I definitely recommend him.
He is available during office hours for help with drafts but, if you do not plan to be an English major I HIGHLY recommend dropping this class. His expectations are VERY high, there are readings assigned for every single class and essay assignments are complex and long. He is super nit picky with details and expects you to remember so much info :(
Good professor overall but not an easy class if he is your professor. There are many reading and he expects a very high level of writing. Participation marks saved me but I wouldn't count on them. Good luck if you have him.
very bad experience, he agrees with the students but when it comes to grading he is very tough. He is very sinic. and i would definitely not recommend him! drop his class if you have ENGL 102 and get another prof
If you want to get a C+ or even a C, than do not choose his class ever! He does not give any feedback! If you asked him how difficult the final exam will be. He will tells you that the final exam will be easy! Please, don't be naive! He is lying ! In stead, he will make the exam extremely difficult ! ! !
didnt respect the people at all. never and ever would take his course again
His lectures were good but it's generally harder by comparing with other profs for the same class. Always have materials to read.
If you can avoid taking English 103 with him, AVOID IT. Literally the hardest marker, and his comments on your essays dont add up to the mark you got. I did better in a 200 level course with writing than I did with this class. 0/10 would not recommend
makes me feel disrespectful. You worked hard but it means nothing for him.
I may be an outlier, but I found Dr. Chowdhury to be a fairly nice and reasonable professor. He is heavy on homework and he marks pretty hard on essays. The class wasn't super exciting, but he gave valuable feedback when needed. My advice is to take this class seriously. Don't expect to put in average effort to get a good mark; hard work is key.
this class requires a lot of reading done on your own time and there are pop quizzes every class. considering it was a night class we always had at least a week to prepare and do the readings or assignment. when you do the assignments though he gives good feedback and is a very reasonable marker. I went in expecting it to be super hard but it wasn'
had him for 102 and 103. If you want to become a better writer, he gives you everything you need to get there. Quizzes at the start of each class are easy if you did the readings. He can be blunt so don't be sensitive. He is a really good prof.
doesnt respect students. treat students unequally. use bad and mean words if you disagree with the grading. not sure why the University still keeps him. If you dont believe, give it a try if you want to risk it. That are the best words that i can say about this 'GUY'
Not sure why so many people on here feel so negative towards him. He's a really nice guy and is willing to help you when you need it. He rewards hard work so if you're the type to slack off don't take his class.
I loved Prof Chowdhury - he's hilarious, engaging, and super helpful if you go to his office hours (go to his office hours! - he's incredibly responsive and helpful). There's quite a few readings, but never more than half an hours work every couple of nights, definitely not overwhelming and his expectations aren't super high - great first year prof
Dr. Chowdhury was a great prof, he was definitely quite a hard marker but he only did it to better us. He's super funny, and not dry to listen to at all. He's also very helpful if you need him and gives a TON of feedback on essays. He will make you a better writer, FOR SURE. I had a great time in his class this year and I learned so much from him!
Dr. Chowdhury puts emphasis on your attendance and makes each class interesting. He gives you an array of feedback to work on your writing. GO to class to get those participation marks and get your portfolio done!! would recommend!
I had him for ENGL 199 in fall of 2019. Compared to others professors, this is definetely one of the worst ones in the entire university. He marks hard, gives you a new reading at the end of every class, makes you do a group presentation weekly(for no marks still scary!) and makes you read 30 pages of a book and quizzes you on only 1 of those 30.
He grew on me as the semester went on. TONS of readings with follow up reading quizzes at the beginning of class (they're very straight forward though). Extremely helpful with essay writing if you go to his office hours - tells you exactly what he looks for. Overall caring prof but a HEAVY 102 course compared to all others.
Dr. Chowdhury is very helpful and gives clear, constructive feedback. He does use the Novel assigned as it is expected that you read it, to fulfill assignment requirements. There are lots of short stories (1 or 2) for every class but they are doable as they are short (sometimes just 3 stanza poems). Overall great prof, I would recommend.
He is one of the most self-obsessed people I've ever met. He may not look like it, but he thinks his class is the most important thing on the planet, that he says the word of God, and that his jokes are funny. Ridiculous amount of reading. Sucking up to him for a good grade isn't worth it, go find another prof. Seriously, I regret not dropping out.
Ahsan was a pretty decent prof, he gave very good feedback, though there was pop quizzed at least once a week. That being said these quizzes were very easy if you read the assigned readings. He also gave you ample class time to do any work and communicated very well about when and how assignments should be done.
feels like he doesn't respect you. This is supposed to be catered to engineering kids, but I don't think he understands this, so he gives way too much homework and readings. At the end of last year other profs cancelled their last readings so students could work on the final assessment. I believe he was the only prof to keep the last readings.
Dr. Chowdhury is clearly passionate about what he teaches and shows nothing but respect towards those who choose to contribute to class discussion. Take notes because he loves when you use what was discussed in class in your own writing. If you do all the homework and incorporate his feedback, you'll do great. Overall would recommend this prof!
His comments on my essay were awful and not helpful at all. He even used slang and there was no constructive criticism, its just criticism. I started to skip his classes but attendance is mandatory. He's a really tough marker and takes forever to reply to your emails (took a week to reply to one of my emails so now I avoid emailing him)
He knows his stuff but his course is too tough for full time students, he doesn't give good helpful feedback. Honestly if you are in his class change the section as soon as possible or you will be stuck with a bad grade. Honestly it would be better if he did away with the participation grade, but im pretty sure thats not going to happen.
He gave a lot of homework and there were a ton of quizzes. He marks out of 10 for essays. You have a lot of homework which you will need to compile into a portfolio and submit at the end of the semester. You must verbally participate in all classes or post on the forum. Zoom breakout rooms were 2-3 people. Overall awful class.
He was rather wholesome and sweet, but his class was rough going. I understand times are difficult right now, but he would assign readings with less than 24 hours until the class, and often it would be crucial to the lesson. He's a tough but fair grader; however, his "feedback" on assignments would be criticism that didn't encourage improvement.
Professor Chowdhury was a great class lecturer. He goes into a lot of detail during class and provides helpful explanations. There is a lot of homework you have to do for the class including readings, videos, and questions. There was no final exam but we wrote two essays. He marks class participation and expects you to participate every class.
Compared to my friends who seemed to have fairly easy English classes this year, English was my hardest class. Although Dr. Chowdhury was very pleasant, it was very frustrating having loads of readings assigned almost every class, sometimes even less than 24 hours before the homework is due. I found that the quiz's were also quite difficult.
Dr. Chowdhury is very passionate and his lectures are helpful to refer to for the two major essays. But with the newness and anxiety of online, I believe his participation for marks system was rather unfair and it made me dread class. If you enjoy discussing in class, go for him, but otherwise steer clear because you'll be penalized.
Adds homework less than 24 hours before due date without notifying students. His 'feedback' just beats you down instead of encouraging you and is full of slang. Extremely condescending. The whole class serves to prove how smart he is and bloat his ego instead of helping students learn. Will give you a bad mark happily.
Professor Chowdhury really enjoys putting students in breakout rooms to discuss which is alright to an extent. His feedback on essays is less feedback and more telling you you need to rewrite your essay his way. He assigns homework the day before class without mentioning it to anyone which makes it a rush to finish.
Dont take this dude unless youre specifically majoring in ENGL or have a genuine interest in this subject. He is completely unaware of the amount of work he gives, and requires mandatory participation. To me, thats really stupid, because it only forces people to say the most basic, brain dead ideas.
Horrible. While other profs only had textbook readings, Dr. Chowdhury gave an additional short story/article to read and reflect on literally every other day, and he quizzed us on it. He would wait until Friday to give homework for Sunday *morning*. We had 6 mandatory courses, yet he would give us hours of reading. Didn't understand eClass, either.
Dr. Chowdhury was the worst prof I have ever come across. He has his mindset as though you are only taking his english class and therefore assigns you multiple readings a night. He will assign LONG assignments that are due the next day and won't say anything to you about it at all. If you have him. Drop your english and take it with someone else..
HORRIBLE. He is super rude and feels as though his class is superior. He assigns more homework than any of my other classes combined. He will post assignments that are due on top of other homework WITHOUT telling anyone. NEVER take a class with him.. you'll regret it
This professor is one of the worst one's I've ever had. He gives an unreasonable amount of homework and has multiple readings that you have to read before every class. His class is so boring and he has tests and assignments due and doesn't tell you and expects you to see everything yourself. Honestly he is the worst. Would never take him again
Not helpful. Doesnt seem like he wants to teach during class. Never felt comfortable during class. Hes like an elementary school teacher... less focused on getting information accross, more focus on group participation.... Never got anything out of his class but sadness.
Avoid him at all costs. He doesnt teach you anything and expects you to know everything yourself. The workload in this class is unreal and he drops assignments due for next class without saying anything. Avoid this man
Unreasonable workload for an entry level class with absolutely no guidance or instruction for main assignments. Quizzes worth 5-10% of your grade are 5 short answer questions with a time limit of 5 minutes total... Find another prof.
Classes were very involved with lots of discussions. Doing the readings before class was important. He facilitated a strong feeling of community in class which was very nice during COVID-19. I thought his expectations were clear and he explored the readings well so that we were prepared for writing the essays.
Gave so much classwork and homework compared to the other English classes.
Prof Chowdhury is not as bad as many people make him out to be. He was a very nice prof and gave me lots of constructive criticism on my paper. It helped! I got an A on my first paper. I can't say the same about the pop quizzes since he gives you very little time. Not his fault you may not excel in english.
I don't find him approachable and his critical attitude could sometimes read as condescending or unpleasant. His lectures are the same everyday, not very interesting or inspiring. The workload is fine but the feedback is just grade points or a letter. I don't recommend choosing this prof unless you are ok with a mediocre learning experience.
I did an online class with him and he's really knowledgeable about the course content. Sometimes he would post homework the night before it's due and he expects a lot of readings to be done for each class. His pop quizzes are easy if you've done the readings and if you don't know the answer to a question during participation he'll help you out!
Ahsan was quite the character, and I would say that your writing abilities will improve quite a bit by taking his class. His lectures are mandatory and participation in them is essential for a higher grade. He grades papers reasonably. The hard part of his class is the readings you must do and the homework, which is USUALLY assigned beforehand.
While he's not a bad proff, you'd better be ready to read 1-2h for every single class. Pop quizzes aren't uncommon and contribute to the final "participation portfolio". You should also be up for group work, as most of class time will be spent working in groups. Participation in class discussions is very important, so you've got to speak up
Prof Chowdhury is very knowledgable about English and you will for sure learn a lot from this class. The only downsides are that he doesn't realize that students have other classes as well and if your opinion/interpretation doesn't match his it's considered wrong. He is a caring guy BUT he's not the best choice for ENGL 103 in my opinion!
He doesnt share the screen oftentimes. So is hard to catch up with him.
this guy just does not know how to manage a top university class and you wont learn anything from him... find another prof
If you are distracted in class, or just go to get something and you are not there when he is looking for you, he will dislike you very much and will be prejudiced against you, even if you email him a sincere apology. He will make all your grades low and automatically assume that you haven't turned in all your homework. You will be judged to be fals
Makes it very clear that he doesn't like being asked for help. You have the option to submit a paper for proofreading by him but he states that it could end up bringing your grade down if you don't follow his directions to a T. Very unforgiving of technical difficulties. Makes it seem like your wasting his time for asking any questions.
While he is quite knowledgeable, Chowdhury's classes have so many readings before each class. It feels like he does not care much about his students at all, and believes that his English class is the only class you are taking at the moment. He's not a super rough grader though but definitely would not take him again if I had the chance.
I don't get why he's getting a lot of hate. I enjoyed his class because he interacts with his students and allows them to contribute to meaningful discussions. The only I dislike is the one time he posted an assignment without announcing it. Other than that, he is a decent prof. He provides constructive feedback and fosters a friendly environment.
Pretty sure he completely lost it after he got tenured. Terrible at teaching and super unforgiving with any technical difficulties even through covid. Claimed he is "not paid enough" to deal with a student's arising issue during an exam. The difficulty of the course is as expected of an intro English course but I would avoid this guy. PhD // brain
A horrible human being. Dont take his classes, but if you already did, then drop it ASAPPPP.
Very knowledgeable and extremely sweet to his students
Don't know why this prof gets so much hate, he was amazing for this class. The topic was interesting, the reading was not too heavy, other than the novel at the end. We had about 4 pop quizzes throughout the semester, so not much. And he tried to be funny and lighthearted throughout the class, along with making sure people were participating.
While Professor Chowdhury is very knowledgable on his area of expertise, his course reminds me of a high school class. He takes attendance, and expects you to contribute every class, even calling you out if you don't. His reading are also 40-50 pages MINIMUM with study guide questions for EVERY class. Much too much work for a beginner ENGL class
Dr. Chowdhury is a nice guy and he's passionate about his material. An overwhelming amount of reading, and an above average amount of quizzes. Not the end of the world, just get ready to work.
He's a pretty solid professor. Sure, there are readings before every class but it's not really an outlandish amount compared to other classes. Attendance is mandatory, but mostly it's just to encourage participation for the participation grade. Feedback is pretty vague, but he's not out to fail you. He's pretty funny too and lectures are enjoyable.
If you show up to every class and participate, you'll be good. He gives a lot of homework, and discussions are based on the homework. If you don't participate or do the homework, he won't like you and your 10% participation mark will be bad. But if you don't care about that then he's fine. Tough grader as well, but it's not a horrible class.
You better show up to every class with the 40-50 pages read, every single day. If you don't, you will not do well in the course. He's a very tough marker, and honestly I don't agree with the way he runs his classes at all. very High school esc in the way he calls people out.
Dr. Chowdhury is an excellent prof. The readings before class can usually be done within half an hour. There are a couple of pop quizzes, but they are incredibly easy (Literally 4-5 MC questions). He marks essays fairly and as long as you participate in class discussions a couple of times throughout the course, you will do well.
Dr. Chowdhury has very interesting and fun lectures during his class, but participation really matters and sometimes people are called out which isn't super fun. There was not that much homework, aside from the daily readings, but oftentimes the readings were far too much.
Very high school-centered classes. calls out your name for attendance, makes remarks if you are late, picks on you to read out loud or answer a question, and requires 50+ pages of reading to be ready for discussion in the next class. He will take marks off your grade if you are busy doing other assignments.
Chowdhury is not a nice person. Avoid him at all costs.
Dr. Chowdhury was an excellent professor. The workload was slightly high, but completely manageable and the lectures were insightful. He did not call on anyone in my class, but participation and attendance do matter. His grading is reasonable and he is overall, an extremely kind and caring professor.
He was a good prof but there were lots of readings which is hard to manage with a full course load. Class participation matters a lot so make sure you answer questions or read stuff in class. Overall he was good just make sure you keep up with the readings and homework and you'll be fine!
I would avoid Dr. Chowdhury if possible. It feels like high school. He is not very kind and has either an awful superiority complex or a bad attitude problem. So many readings with little time. Is unreasonable and hard to reach out to unless you're okay with a rude reply with no actual constructive critics. Overall he's just a mean person.
We had two essays, an annotated bibliography, 2 small quizzes and a participation portfolio which made up all of our grade. He's a decent marker, however does expect you to do hours of reading each week and participate in class. He structures class very similar to a high school class, overall a reasonable guy and if you put in work you'll do well.
You don't have to work insanely hard to get a good grade. I skipped class often and still got an A-, but when I was in class participated a lot. His grading is very fair in my opinion. Honestly just a great and funny guy too. Fair marker and gives great feedback on what to improve on.
Attendance is mandatory, and doing readings before class is very important to get involved in the class discussion, which is very important to get good grades. Marking is very strict when it comes to assignments or projects. Good Luck :)
He pushed his religious agenda during class and there was a vague understanding that his opinion would get you higher grades. Lectures were very boring but attendance was mandatory, I would never take another one of his classes
This guy is a bad English prof and a bad person. He'll make you do more work than any other prof, for the exact same credit. You'll do a graded in-class assignment EVERY class, attendance is mandatory. He doesn't actually teach you anything. He'll make fun of you publicly if you ask a question, he also makes fun of his previous students. Terrible.
I had a totally different experience than everyone else on here. I thought he was a great prof for creative writing. He does assign a lot of readings and homework but I didn't find it unreasonable. I didn't find him to be the best lecturer, but I really enjoyed the class and learned a lot!
A very harsh grader with lots more homework assigned than other profs teaching this class. Readings for every lecture and assignment guidelines were not always clear. Is overall a nice person, passionate about teaching, but personally did not give fair marking. Attendance is mandatory and marked off.
I'm surprised by the reviews here, because my experience with this prof was awesome. He puts emphasis on class participation, but I found it far easier to participate in his class than my others. The assigned readings were all relevant and helpful, and he was a fair grader! He's a funny guy and I really helped me strengthen my writing.
If you attend his class regularly and participate it is very easy to get a good grade. We only had to read one novel for the entire class and each class he spent time talking about the chapters we read which really helped prepare you for the final essay. Would recommend his class
Expect a heavy workload with Chowdhury - lots of readings and participation is crucial. However, Unstuck AI was a game-changer for study prep. Overall, put in the work and you'll do well.
He was extremely rude. I whispered to my cousin once to ask what page we were on, and he stopped the entire class to lecture me about being disrespectful. After that, he unfairly graded me lower than classmates I knew who didn't even finish the assignment. His class was extremely boring too—avoid him if you can. He is awful
