Barnes isn't candy-coated and she will grade you as if you were a grad student. she tells you what she expects and you better do it- you have NO CHOICE, there isn't another teacher who teaches her courses. Pay attention, act interested, and DO THE WORK. She has favorites, so be aware.

She's a loose cannon.... careful you don't ****her off
Watch out for her. Get on her good side and everything is fine. All you have to do is sit there and listen to her berrate OTHER students. Watch out for number one when you have her. Do good on your first paper. That is what you will get in any class you have her for.
It feels like she picks on some students, hopefully you're not her - she can tell whether or not you put forth any effort so go in for help if you fail your assignments

the most horrid prof i have ever had. she is a ****, plays favorites and if you dont kiss her a**, she will screw you and screw you hard. she should NOT be head of the portfolios. i know of a NUMEROUS amount of people whom she didnt pass because she just didnt like them. she is a hag.
She is a rather unfair teacher. She has her favorites and makes it obvious. Whatever grade you get on the first day is what you are tagged with for the rest of the class. God help you if you are black, overweight, poor, or *gasp* have an opinion of your own...avoid her if you can. It is tough to do.
She has a bad reputation and i think thats why everyone says they don't like her.I do see that she has favorites, she picks the ones she knows are serious. She is very straightforward and will tell it like it is. If you are a slacker she isn't going to give you the time of day and i don't blame her
If you haven't experienced her wrath then you are lucky. Even those students who have positive comments know that she singles students out if she doesn't like them, but they are just glad that it isn't them. She is an ELITIST! She loves to wear black because it matches the color of her soul.
She has a lot to offer to students, if she likes you. Be sure to majorly suck up and even if she says something is informal, make it formal. How you do in the first week reflects the entire semester, and every semester after you have her (including portfolios). She's utterly evil and plays favorites. Be sure to be her favorite and you will do well.
Oh good God. This woman is the WORST professor ever. She needs to just go home. She is the reason that I decided to drop the education part of my Degree. I thought that if she could be a teacher, then there have to be even worse ones out there. AVOID HER LIKE THE PLAGUE.
I had this professor four years ago. I have never HATED a teacher more than her. She did not like me from the first day of class. She told me to my face that she was going to fail me and there was nothing I could do about it. I had to go to the dean because of her incompetence, and he helped me.
Totally sucks....never know what she wants...a real....you know..
I dont understand why everyone gives her such harsh ratings. I personally like her a lot if u show up and read your assignments it should be at min. a B for the course. She was a lot of fun when I took her, we had a small class so we could talk about anything with her and she would even pitch in on her own experiences
On the chopping block, no worries now. Props to all who have struggled to maintain their composure and level of professionalism.
Good professor, explains things well and doesn't waste your time. Class discussions were interesting, and she is willing to help you if you need help. I thought the class was fun and I actually enjoyed the readings.
Currently teaching at UAA. gave very vague instructions and got crabby when asked for clarification. She taught the class like it was a 300 lvl class rather than as Eng 111.
Dr. Barnes' in class assignments make it appear that you are doing well in the class, however, once you receive your first paper back you will see that you are really not doing so hot. She is not very easy to talk to about assignmnets either. If you are confused ask a classmate!
she was a very good teacher, class was easy.
She had a very crabby attitude and wasvery unhelpful for students. She was unclear on directions and due dates. DON'T take her.
Great teacher. She is very interested in the students ability to write good papers and she really wants students to challenge themselves. Good class
I enjoy writing and have always done well in prior english or writing based classes. This class was so terrible I had to take a W on my transcript. An A is un-attainable for even the best of writers. I wasn't willing to take a C in a class that for me, should be an easy A. She makes a 111 level class into a large burden. She's not in your corner.
This Professor was new to Alaska when I took her English A111 course. She constantly had to tell the class to read the syllabus because they asked her idiotic questions that were in the syllabus. She kinda picked on the dingy kids. LOL She was okay.
DANGER<DANGER<DANGER - Doesn' teach basic principles of APA formating, instructions unclear, class will take up majority of your studies, plays favorites, Do not ask for assistance, very mean, The worst English I have had in years. Avoid her, do not take her, very crude, unprofessional, nasty demeanor and will hurt your GPA.

She is an amazing english professor. She will help you grow as a writer and reader by challenging you. As long as you put some thought and time into your essays you'll do fine. She gives a lot of e.c. for a single event so if it's offered take advantage of it. Also, she gives you the option of 5 more pts on your essay if you fix the problem parts. Very nice and sincere lady and would recommend her any day.
Terrible teacher that one should avoid at all costs
TERRIBLE!! Not helpful at all and treats all students like idiots. Make sure you read the material a few times over or will kick you out if you don't have anything "intelligent" to say about it. Make sure to kiss her butt and agree with anything she has to say. Very unclear with assignments, yet while grading will just put "be more focused" across the page. Hard to do that when you're not sure what she's looking for.
Very poor teacher; expects 400- level work from a 200-level class! Picks on certain students and doesn't appreciate other views on texts. If you don't agree with her, she'll give you a very low grade. Try to avoid her classes at ALL COSTS! She teaches the class in a laid back manner, then expects the class to write super analytical papers. AVOID!!!
Professor Barnes is one of the best teachers I've ever had. She challenges her students but if you attend class, pay attention, and do the reading, you will receive an A. If you are struggling in the class she will help you do better. She knows a lot about her topics and expects students to care about the class and their grade. I recommend her!
Let me clarify by saying she would be likable if she weren't my teacher. As a professor of higher learning she should be a better communicator. In a nutshell, you either agree with her or you're wrong. Avoid, avoid, avoid!
Aisha is not a bad person - her teaching is a bit confusing. While most student are encouraged to think outside of the box, Aisha believes her students she think as she does and if they do not she becomes very irritible. Her interest is not catered to any one individual in the class, more or less she only cares about herself.
Midterm had unrealistic expectations. Short section for matching literary terms, a few paragraph responses and then an awful 4 page essay section. Yep that's right, all in 75 minutes. Everything is based on non-important details in not-feel-good stories read for class. Not entry level criteria.
Midterms are over and I'm disgusted with this "professor." FYI she's going to tell you what to think about all readings. When it comes time for a quiz or exam be prepared to tell her exactly what she thinks. she doesn't care about anyone else's ideas or opinions and she will grade you down if you even try to give them. Major superiority complex!
Professionally, Aisha is just dreadful. She is impossible to try and communicate with and isn't professor material. She acts very arrogant, uninterested, and snobby. On top of being disorganized, unprepared, stubborn, and rude. "She wears black because it's the color of her soul" from below is 100% accurate. AVOID if possible!
THE WORST PROF. I EVER HAD. Her opinion or interpretation of the readings is the ONLY one that matters. In her essays when she asks your opinion try to skate around it because she will FAIL you if the answer isn't the one she has in her mind. The whole class was disgusted by her rudeness and unprofessionalism
Easy A if you do all of the reading and participate in all class discussions. Sure, she is very opinionated but just remember what she talks about during discussion (and put your own opinion out there) and you'll ace the tests. This class is by far the easiest out of all my classes this semester.
Fun Class! If you show up for class discussions and actually READ the book (The Odyessey, Ramayana, Gilgamesh, Beowulf) you will receive an A. There are only 2 exams, midterm and final, and a quiz over the reading material every 2 or 3 classes.
Terrible! Bitter, extreme liberal bias, always complaining about those ho have more than her, burned out on teaching.... She knows very little about using computers or programs. A horrible way to start college.
So for the final: She gave us a list of poems and words- know 20 words & 23 poems. For the final itself she had 5-6 vocab words & 10+ stanzas we were to match from a list. Took less than 10 minutes! Kindest thing she did all semester -you'll write about 40 pages with papers and quizzes and the midterm was terrible. LOTS of writing in a short time
I am not sure why there are so many negative reviews on here for Prof Barnes. I love her teaching style. If you do the readings & come to class you will do great. Her opinions are very insightful and she has inspired me to change my major. She is hands down one of my favorite professors at UAA.
Perhaps I am overstepping my privilege by making a review on Ms. Barnes who was my HS Eng. Lit teacher back in the 1980's. I will concur with most of the reviewers in that she was always unclear about her expectations and counsel, yet she had the vindictive demeanor to do hatchet jobs on your essays. She made topics of literature boring as well.
This professor has very unclear expectations. Grades at a higher level than the actual class. She will not hesitate to berate students in class. Avoid taking this instructor at all costs.
Great Professor if you are interested in English and take her classes seriously. She is very insightful to listen to with a mellow demeanor.
Tons of reading, unclear/strict rules, ALOT of writing in a short time period, and you'll use the whole $10 you have for printing in this class. Wasn't absolutely horrible, but wouldn't take her again.
AVOID. I received a poor grade on a paper so I went to her office hours for help. She basically told me my opinions were wrong and that she couldn't help me with that. I realized half way through the semester not to write about my interpretations to succeed, ONLY write about hers. Seriously, that's the only way to get a good grade with her.
Horrible Horrible teacher. Instructions and topics unclear. Graded too harshly as if it were a 300 or 400 level class and not a 111. Shes out to make people fail. The reviewers who said if you read and show up to class you will do fine, that is wrong. You must do everything exactly her way, and her way is unclear. Had to take a W.
She provided detailed rubrics for the papers, the most extra credit of any class I've taken, and was willing to help students after office hours. I have no idea what more she could possibly do. Seriously, just follow directions, and have some attention to detail and you'll do fine. This isn't high school, you may have to actually do some work.
She is a challenging professor. She pushes you to write better than you're capable of, which is a good thing. I learned a lot about reading texts in this class. Read everything twice, take fastidious notes, study, and practice writing essays on the spot; you'll do a lot of those in class. Great office hours as well. Don't retell the plot! :)
Aisha Barnes is an absolutely exceptional professor. As long as you follow the rules of the course, read your assigned material and come to every class ready to discuss it and write about it, you will do just fine. A201 was a great course and I am definitely taking A202 with her again.
This professor is a bullying who takes her anger on students the class material is unclear and she has serious communication issues she has no problem disrespecting her students and using her power to belittle her students do yourself a favor do not take her class.
Terrible. Unclear about assignments, and doesn't help when approached for assistance. Aggressive towards students. Write what she wants to see not your opinions on the readings.
I don't agree with the negative comments. I think she is a great professor and she helped me alot! It's simple, be nice to her, be willing to help, do readings and assignments before class (attendance is mandatory) and you will do fine. I'm a senior and compared to other's, she offered the MOST extra credit period! Take her course!
Aisha Barnes is a passive-aggressive, condescending bully. Her essay prompts are unclear, and if you write against what she thinks is correct, you will fail. Positive reviews state that to do well, you should do the readings: This is incorrect as you must also writes to what she teaches. I would highly recommend not taking any class she teaches.
if you don't agree with her views you will be wrong. you have no opinion of your own in her classroom.
can be very rude and belittling. She took this class overboard and instead of learning HUMANITIES we learned art. This was not HUMANITIES but art appreciation. When asking for help she is sarcastic. She has a huge issue with favoritism. If you are not one of her favorites you don't exist nor matter. Also don' expect to pass. CLASS SUCKS.. her too!!
Awful professor! She would likely be fired if it weren't for tenure. It is also rumored that the positive reports on here were written by her hand. Avoid Aisha at all costs. I am a straight A student and received an 'A' from her, however, I found her knowledge base and professionalism to be lacking. She's like a high school teacher from Hell!
Way to high of expectations for a lower division lit class
I have found the one true devil in this professor. She refuses to clarify her vague instructions, she is extremely rude to her students, and expects 400 level quality from a 100 level class. Her midterm was a 3 page paper, midterm exam and a four page essay portion. She only like English majors that have a concentration in literature. AVOID!
This is the WORST teacher I have ever had in my entire life. I recommend to you all not to take her class.... Ever. Taking Any of her classes would be a mistake.
The least organized, most opinionated teacher I have ever had. She cuts you off if your opinions differ from hers and she openly stated how she "loves basketball players because they always do their homework" and that the lit pieces shouldn't be difficult because high school AP students can do it. Half of the pts possible are in the last month.
Barnes was the most opinionated teacher I've ever had at UAA, so much so, that she would grade students down for disagreeing with her opinion. Avoid if you can. P.S She doesn't give the most extra credit, she gave a total of five points. If you compare that to her grading rubric, its barely enough to move your grade by one percent.
Her use of UAAs blackboard is not organized She does not keep an updated syllabus on blackboard She does not accept medical absences even with doctors notes Can't read her own handwriting on papers given back On the first day of class told us the $100 book we bought wont be used, and instead to get the 2 year old version
When writing essays, a thesis is a good idea. However, she destroys your essay if you have one. If you disagree with her, she makes you to be wrong and be ashamed for it. I swear if you saw this dragon-lady smile, you would see fangs. She wouldn't know how to write a good essay if it kicked her dentures out from her face. For your own sake, AVOID!!
This instructor is not realistic in her expectations of College students; especially for an ENGL 121 course. She does not entertain creativity or free thinking in regards to the material you read. If you disagree with her view you are WRONG. Its her way or the highway. Grading is ruthless. Say Bye Bye to all the ways you were taught to write papers
Be ready for a lot of reading and note taking. Also, being active in the class discussions will get you good dibs. Be prepared to take each and every one of your papers to the writing center (more than once each), and turn in all assignments on time! Do these and you will pass.
I consider myself to be pretty good in English but the second I stepped foot in that room it was like I knew nothing. I learned a ton from her class, don't get me wrong, but I had to work so hard for my grade. 4 papers in the semester and a ton of in class writings w/ lots of reading expected. A very labor intensive class that I'm glad I'm done w/.
She is a teacher who expetcs her students to do the work. Pretty Simple. She is fair and a kind person.
She is not clear on instructions and she can be rude at times.
Paper due atleast every week? Get out, Prof. Barnes! Seriously undersold work load. Would not take again x-x
For me, she's kind person. I passed her with class with an A!! and my English is a second language. Her class is not easy actually really hard but if you do your work, study and attend to class EVERYDAY you will do fine. I took her class on summer and she offered a lot extra credits. Get yourself ready for lots of readings!
A lot of work out of class. A lot of papers.
I enjoyed going to this class only because of Professor Barnes. She's witty, funny, and very approachable. She gave a few extra credit assignments where all you had to do was show up to an event/presentation. Her classwork was easy if you read or even just skimmed the material assigned the night before. Easy midterms and final. Would recommend!!
Get ready to save up money on ink for your printer. She will make you print like there is no tomorrow and most of the time. You're not gonna use the papers once and nothing else. One more thing, get ready for pop quizzes and a whole lot of reading.
I have never had a more immature teacher in my life. She constantly berated students from other classes using names not fit for fifth grade students on the playground. Lack of self esteem and hatred of her job makes this teacher the worst I have ever had, and I have had some bad ones.
Aisha Barnes is disrespectful and rude to people, she says mean comments about other students and teachers.
She is tough but fair. If you do the work and put in effort you will get a good grade. If your lazy and don't take school seriously you will fail. Got good feedback. Most of my classmates were lazy morons and were surprised about their bad grades. Every teacher that has gotten bad reviews are the ones that actually expect you to learn!
I took Professor Branes class on summer 2017. She is really good but a lots of work and sometimes she provided an extra credit for students. Prepare to reading a book and take an note so you will pass is class easily.
I got A on her class even thought English as my second languages. I like her, she is great professor.
Great professor, even though I almost failed the class. My biggest regret is that I started slacking in the middle of the semester (I was questioning the meaning of life at the time and it showed in my work). As long as you do the work, you'll be fine.
For a literature class, Professor Barnes placed far too heavy a focus on in-class essays. All classes had an in-class writing assignment, which were irrationally graded. She gave no helpful pointers on what she wanted to see in these assignments, and was not helpful when asked for clarification on the grade given on these essays. Disrespectful.
This class seems overly difficult for such an entry level course, but not impossible to get a good grade. Prepare for long readings every night and in class essays. Feedback on papers seemed inconsistent. Very particular. If you roll with her quirks she will respond better to you in class. Would not take her class again if I can avoid.
This professor teaches an entry level writing class and assigns so many assignments, and gives bad grades often with no feedback. Also very rude when you email her. Will never take her class again.
Professor Barnes is not getting the credit she deserves. Barnes states her expectations in the beginning of class. Three easy steps to pass her class with an A or B Step 1: Read the syallibus Step 2: Read the directions for the assignment Step 3: Do the assignments. If you have crazy personal issues then just TALK to her she will help you.
My experience with Barnes was HORRIBLE. I took her online summer course (writing across context 111) Aisha is very unorganized when it comes to grading, and putting directions/links on Blackboard. She is an extremely rude professor. She doesn't care to help/see students succeed. Avoid this professor if you can! Always check/use Rate My Professor!
Was rude and not understanding at all.
I ended up dropping the class. I was overwhelmed by the workload and her instructions weren't clear. I was very confused. She has her way and she'll stick to it. Seems like a genuinely kind lady, just not the best professor. It was mandatory to bring the textbook to class yet we didn't even talk about it. It just weighed down my bag.
I've always considered myself to be a decent writer, but this class has absolutely dashed all of my confidence in writing. No intro material, too vague, doesn't capture attention--it's Barnes' way or the highway when it comes to your papers. She leaves extremely harsh criticism without telling you how to fix it. Assigns at LEAST 1 paper every week
Teaching style is just not my cup of tea. Too many tangants abt her life
She is a very hard professor. I should have dropped the class when I had the chance. She said that a textbook was mandatory yet we never once used it. She gave me a D on the paper because she didn't agree with my opinion, those were her exact words. Essays due every week and she never gives feedback just a grade so you don't know what to fix.
Get ready to feel like your writing is awful and everything you do is wrong: too wordy, not concise enough, too specific, too argumentative... etc. Drop this class the minute you get a chance or you will be up at 3am on a monday trying to decipher what the hell it is that this professor is even expecting out of you. Truly awful.
Aisha Barnes class is not hard, just show up and do the work and you will get an A. Visit her office hours if you want more feedback on your papers. I will admit there is a lot of busy work and if you dont show up you wont pass, attendance is mandatory. Shes a lady many people have strong opinions about but she is a good person and professor.
She is a good person but not a good professor. The blackboard, syllabus, and scheduling are all over the place making it hard to know what you're suppose to work on in that class. Her style of teaching is the worst I've ever had in my life to the point that I starts to hate writing in general. Please avoid her class if possible, for your own good.
She was a nice person, but not when grading papers. She expected everyone to write well without teaching us about writing. We spend more time talking about the content of papers than how to write them, and her grading standards were not always the same as the rubric. That said, going consistently to office hours should earn better grades on papers.
Prof. Barnes doesn't teach you anything. She says to contact the writing center if you need help with something. She gives you feedback via a rubric, so she doesn't say where in your paper needs improvement. You can check every box in the rubric and still get an 80% on a major paper. Horrible teacher. Hated this class, do not take Barnes, EVER.
Professor Barnes was never timely when giving instructions about upcoming assignments. She would oftentimes upload a zoom lecture two days before an assignment was due and start giving NEW instructions about her expectations. Her class stressed me out more than my Anatomy & Physiology class.
I went into this class as a confident writer and came out knowing less than I ever have. Expectations for papers were unclear and she grades harshly. She was hard to communicate with and lectures were unpredictable and usually unhelpful. If you have any other options, go with a different professor or take a different course altogether. 0/10 stars
Prof Barnes's class was the nail in the coffin for me and UAA and I ended up transferring after I had her. She's extremely rude when students ask for support and her assignment guidelines are vague and unintelligible. She also created a space that fostered homophobia and transphobia in her classroom, if you're LGBT identifying avoid at all costs.
She was so bad. The rubrics weren't available, little to no feedback was given. Incredibly rude and transphobic. Is not willing to work with you. Harsh grader. 0/10 stars. Would not take any other class from her again. Heavy workload, mostly self taught. I actually managed to unlearn how to write essays in this class. GET OUT IF YOU CAN!!
It is a higher level class so her expectations are high for essays. Usually an essay and assignment due every week. I had gotten COVID-19 in November and the symptoms were awful, I could even think straight. I emailed her and I guess since I didn't have the correct formatting she wanted on the email she never respond. It was absurd.
Dropped the class after 2 weeks
Horrible is an understatement. Avoid taking her classes!!!
Her teaching style is vague yet still manages to have an aggressive tone to it. She also will rarely add insight to how to fix your problem and instead direct you to the writing center. I personally don't have the pocket change for extra lessons and don't understand why the teacher can't teach us how to write more clearly or what she expects of us
Her class is a waste of time. The fact that i need to spend so much time to try and be up to her standard of what she calls writing. The worst professor ever existed in writing/english.
Professor Barnes is an extremely tough grader. It feels as though she often expects perfect papers from day one of a first year course. Small mistakes often result in a full letter grade reduction. If your interpretation of a work is different from how she interprets it, you will receive a bad grade.
