I enjoyed the class. The mathematics she presented was very clear and allowed me to enjoy the class in a simple way.
honestly, i came into the class a little worried but later on i found myself feeling very secure about my teaching methods. she goes over the homework and offers alot of help.i just got a A so happy. the tests basically the hw.
She is a very helpful and clear professor. If you don't understand she will review the material. She gives many extra credit options for students and is fair. We have a fun little project where you teach a lesson in the class. It; helps your grade too. But EMAIL the presentation when she says to.
Very Nice Professor. Explain the prolbems clearly. Review the homework before the test. very fair. take both M115 and m110 with her.
I love professor Nakayama!!!She is really nice and helpfull. I highly recommend her
Prof. Nakayama is very helpful. She engages students to participate in class and follows the textbook and HW assignments.
Prof.Nakayama is very nice person and she organized and paced her classes very well. You can do very well in her class all you have to do is come to the class, take the notes and do the homework. The class tests and final are a reflection of her class notes and homework.
Pretty bad professor. She was pretty unclear and doesn't really know how to teach, just writes everything on the board without much explanation. I got an A because luckily the material is for the most part easy. Don't expect much help from her.
She is a very good professor. She really can teach someone who has no idea how to do math. She always be patient and nice to the students. Her lecture is in a very understandable level where she paces from easy problem to more challenge problems. I think I have enjoyed her class a lot since the day one, and pretty sure i will a very grade.
She has become my favorite professors. She really cares about the students and wants to make up for any loss of time there is, in any way she can. She gives extra credit points for almost anything. Her class isn't difficult, but if you have questions, she has no problem explaining it until you understand.
Absolutely the best math teacher I have ever had. I have not taken Algebra since my first BA program in the late 90s. I had a hard time with math in high school. Ms. Nakayama is fantastic - every concept is broken down and clearly explained. Homework reinforces what you learn in lecture. I wish she taught Pre-Calc and up.
She made the class easy and crystal clear. I loved it and you will also.
I love her! She is best professor I had so far at Queens College! I never liked math nor good at it since the high school, but she really made it every class understandable and clear. I knew nothing before I came to this class but now I felt I really learned something... I hope I did well on my final.
I don't agree with this Professor's teaching technique. The ones struggling are who you would attempt to pay attention to in the hopes that they get it! Not the over achievers in the front row that you know are passing without effort. But quotes on life she has many -bring post-its! Tons of homework given hardly any explanation prior. I Cried
If you can't understand accents do not bother taking this class. Nothing against her in that regards, english is her second language that is just a heads up. She will not give you full credit on a question if you do not solve it the way she does. She gives an excessive amount of homework, and makes you do A LOT of it. Not understanding at all.
She is the worst math professor I have ever taken at Queens. I DO NOT recommend this professor at all, she will make you feel stupid for asking any question if you do not understand her teaching method. The only reason she is probably still teaching is because of 10 yr. God bless your soul if you even think about taking this professor.
Prof. Nakayama is very knowledgable and well organized for her classwork and the lectures. You will get the semester course calendar and everything you needed for the class on the first day. I also like her extra credit options. But she also gives a lot of homework. But I'm very happy to get an A- as I'm not a math person .
doesn't know how to teach just reads off the slides. she shows the answers which is difficult to understand because you learn math by watching someone work out the problem! always talks about her life and and quotes ppl when she should be teaching the class. doesn't know how to explain the problem if you don't understand. i dont recommend her!!!!
Terrible professor. The amount of homework assigned is absolutely ridiculous. Like the previous post mentioned, she taught half the course from MS Word. Never have I experienced that in a math class. Take only as last resort.
At one point in the semester she began to teach from slides, barely showing us how the work was done. She did teach better when she wrote on the board. She doesn't review that well for exams and gives homework every week. She doesn't even give partial credits on exams. Honestly, not that great of a professor.
These ratings are correct she became lazy and starting showing slides. She did this mid semester. Its very upsetting because we went from being able to see the work done in the board to just basically seeing slides being scrolled over and leaving class lost. When asked for helped after class she just tries to explain super fast as she seems rushed.
At a certain point she got lazy and started showing slides instead of teaching making the class extremely hard to understand. Asking for her to explain didn't help at all. She's pretty lenient about giving partial credit for answers that aren't correct on tests. I would try to avoid her if possible but you can deal with her if you are stuck.
Forgot to mention in the previous post, she gives a ton of homework. A lot of your nights will be spent on endless amounts of time doing the homework.
Nice Professor! Very fair and care her students needs. I strongly recommend her abs would take her again for the calcules course
Prof. Nakayama is fantastic -she explains every concept and broken down step by step clearly. Absolutely the best math teacher I have ever had. She is so patient and knowledgeable. I am a sloppy notetaker but her slides make all problems clear with the solutions; especially the long proofs. Easy to print to study. Take her again in the summer
Prof. Nakayama is a really good professor! She really cares and wants her student to success by providing and preparing lots of things that the students needs in her class ! She updates her homework solution every day and often encourages us to overcome the challenges in studying Logic and proofs ...I think I really learned something in Logicl
M120 is not easy! I took it with another teacher but failed... now I feel I understand lots more this time b/c I got a good professor who really knows her stuff and also can explain things well in a much simpler way... Should have taken her at the 1st time . Two thumbs up!
She 's so nice and kind .One of best math professors in QC , just show up everyday and take notes ,dont miss any homework ,everything on exam are from HW and daily note, then you got A. Trust me, she's amazing
Do your homework and show up everyday ,you got A grade ,she's nice person, answer your question very detailed, you wont feel boring on her class . what you did on HW ,what you got on exam ,very simple and easy :)
Teaches the material very clearly. The homework is not graded but it helps to do because that is where the exam questions come from. She makes math very exciting !
She is a good professor but you do need to work for the grade. For my class, she explained everything well and she stopped and asked if we are all okay with the questions. She didn't have a smartboard for our class so she wrote everything on the board. It is very homework heavy but it isn't graded.
She is the sweetest professor! She cared so much for her students and she would explain questions very thoughtfully. She does give out HWs, but be 100% sure, it will worth your time and the effort you put into. (Her class is the only ones that I would attend every week!)
She is the BEST professor I had in my life. She is so knowledgeable, she is caring, beautiful, nice , patient, whenever you think what a good teacher can do she does it all....A+ teacher!
Sweetest woman ever. HOWEVER not the best at what she does. I actually dont know how she is in the position to teach. Very smart, she has all her degrees but should not be teaching. Very soft spoken, can barely hear, has a heavy accent as well which makes it a bit more difficult. She doesnt write neat so im basically teaching myself the material.
Very patient and explains the material very well. Cares about her students. Offers extra credit. I would take her again for my calculus class
Prof. Nakayama is one of the best professors I've had. this is my first time take a calculus class and found out she is not only knows what she's teaching, you can always see her passion and well organized lecture, she truly cares about her students and willing to drop the lowest score to give us more chance to do well She explains very we
Very dynamic professor and she is seriously about the math but sometime she makes her lecture so much fun . its the best way to learn. well spoken in English which Impressed me even more just think about she is a Japanese but teaches us calculus here .
She is a great caring professor. She gives 3 exams and a final. The exams questions come from homework and problems from class. She explains well and gives review problems before each exam. The final problems come from the review sheet and past exams. She gives extra points for quizzes and participation. She is great and a solid choice at QC.
I took prof Nakayama for Spring 2019 Math 120. She is a great choice. If you do the work you'll get a good grade. She's not out to try to get you like some other professors. She likes to see the class succeed. She drops the lowest exam grade (doesnt drop final)
She tries everything to let you pass, if you can't help yourself, she can't either.
Professor Nakayama is truly knowledgeable in teaching Calculus and really knows how to break down the topics. She explains the subject thoroughly and really makes sure you understand before she moves on I really enjoyed being in her class there are lots of fun moments in class also..I have learned quite a lot.
My overall evaluation for my professor are she is very positive and an inspiration to us all who also want to become teachers. She is super organized and a hard worker, you can see her full detailed Blackboard: EVERYTHING a student needs for the course is up thereShe stays after the class to help out students that have questions. Super nice!
Amazing! A teacher like her really worth a million dollars! Feel lucky to be her student. Gonna miss this class !
She is the best math professor out there if you show up and pay attention in class there is no way you can get lower than an A-. If you don't understand something then she will explain it. She is so kind and caring and cares about her students. Hands down, the best professor you will ever have.
no words needed to be said. she is the best. take herrrr!!!! she's really good and nice.
Professor Nakayama is excellent, great at explaining difficult concepts. Very caring and has a great sense of humor. Do yourself a favor and make sure you do the homework on time, although she doesnt collect them itll go a long way towards getting an A
Prof. Nakayama is the best professor for the calculus I at the Queens College. Taking the class with her this semester is the best choice that I made in my life and paid back with a great A . I just love to come to her class. No matter what I never missed a day
Very Knowledgeable ! Super nice ! I took M151 with other professor couldnt do it , and my friend recommend her, and YES!She is the best choice for the Calculus I ! A big plus , she prepared everything and posted on the Blackboard for the students ! Two Thumbs up!
My professor is the BEST BEST and BEST math Professor. She is really amazing and hardworking. This semester I really feel so lucky to have a math professor who also decent at Technology at this all online classes time. She is a real Pro in using Google Classroom and Google Meet. Two thumbs up
Pros:She is funny, friendly, she tries her best especially now that everything is online, easy exams, lot of extra cr Cons:She is messy, she starts panicking if you are confused and ask her a question leaving you more confused, not the best at explaining stuff, u gotta self study, alot of hw to submit, things get more messy w her if you try tell her
Professor Makayama is very dedicated and really cares about the class for all of us for this online semester. My other Online classes have few functions but she really knows how to use Google Meet and Google Classroom very well . I really like her online exam as I just got 100. Its my first time using a digital blue book to show my work
I believe my professor is the best professor for Online teaching at this difficult Spring 20 semester. She is knowledgeable and funny I enjoyed the way how she teachers math. Her technology Skills used in Google classroom is unbeatable. No matter how hard life is I never missed one of her classes. Just love her class and love her!
One of the best Prof. i have ever took. Do take without fear.... She explains everything in detail and gives a lot of extra credit. Just make sure to do the HW and attend the classes and your all set.
Math120 is a very interesting class with a great professor. Patient, knowledgable, kind, and she truly cares about the students . The class is also usually very engaged. Tests are bit hard because you really do have to study and understand the material. I have learned a lot in the class.
She's an easy A, but she will not prepare you for higher level classes. Pleasant in the beginning, but her darker side shows throughout the semester. Extremely passive aggressive and makes fun of students for getting things wrong or not knowing how to do certain things. Gives out EC like candy. Doesn't really teach, just does a math dept. video.
The irony of this class being "stress free". While in certain ways she did accommodate us quite nicely with tests and quizzes, in other ways... not so much. Her class was so unorganized and confusing which led to her rants. She would belittle students for not grasping the material. Had this class been asynchronous, I would have no issues with it.
BEST BEST BESTTTTT PROFESSOR EVER. if you ever get a chance just take her class. she is really nice and very supportive. 3 exams she drops the lower score. All the exams come directly from the hw assignments. JUST DO THE HW AND YOU'LL GET A+. She cares a lot about her students and will support you in anything. She is simply the best. LOVE HER <3
this professor makes you want to jump out of a moving car off a cliff. she rambles on off topic and doesnt even teach the actual lesson plan ( i dont even think she has a lesson plan) she is extremely rude and doesnt like when students ask questions and doesnt help students either. please avoid her. never take her.
she is horrible.
she is the worst prof i have ever had.. please avoid at all costs. she goes on long tangents unrelated to math material. and when she speaks about math material, she doesn't accept questions. she is stubborn and thinks shes always right.
Prof. Akina is extremely rude towards students, and she didn't allow students to ask questions during class hours. You have to go to her office hours. Furthermore, she does not teach; everything is on Youtube recorded, so what's the point of attending her zoom classes? Prof. puts the video in the zoom, and she called this ''teaching''.
This professor was teaching Math 120 instead of Math 119 because she said Math 120 had "beautiful concepts." My class had to go to the Head of the dept. multiple times to get her to teach the right curriculum. She makes everything much harder than it is and she will use her personal life as an excuse for all of her mistakes.
Prof. Nakayama is really good professor. She made the Calculus much easier to understood. Very nice lady. just attend her every class, practice the homework, you will be fine.
Professor Nakayama has been the most amazing. She is knowledgeable and funny. I enjoyed the way she teaches. She was able to make me understand the material. I would love to take another course where she is the professor if the opportunity presents itself. I do not believe I would have done well in this class if it was not for her;
I had many professors at QC but she is really a fantastic math professor. She is a professor who care for her students and makes sure everyone understands each topic. She is great at explaining topics, especially the ones that may be a bit difficult to understand. Take her your will have many fun moments in her class
Professor Nakayama is the most understanding professor and easy going professor i have ever came across. She gives many chances to get some extra credit to help boost your grade and on top of that she makes her grading policy really convenient for her students. She works really hard to be the best professor out there andshe is always ready to help
She is a great professor and is highly recommend very nice and professional!!!
Professor Nakayama is truly amazing. She cares about the students and always being so encouraging. Sometimes I had a bad day but I still would not missed her class: Not once! I just enjoyed the way she teaches because she was able to make me understand the material. I would take all the classes that she teaches!
worst professor ever
I love this class! This is the only class that I can talk or say something that I want to say. She encouraged all the students to participate and greeting with each student. I can tell she is a very good teacher and kind person. She cares about her students and giving us many chances to do well in the class. I am appreciated and enjoyed her class.
One of the nicest math professors I've encountered in Queens College. If you struggle with understanding how to solve problems, just ask. She is more than happy to go back and explain in many ways. A very caring professor. She gives a fair amount of homework, but the homework helps a ton with the quizzes and tests. She drops the lowest test grade.
I was recommended to take her M141 class after I failed before and wish have had her at the first time. I agree with what others said, she is the most nicest math professors I've encountered in QC. If you struggle with understanding how to do it she is more than happy to go back and explain in many ways. A teacher who really knows how to teach!
If you want to have a solid in your basics you must definitely take this course. It's hard but it's worth it.
Must take this class for solid foundation
Nakayama is very kind and one of the best professors I had in QC so far. She explained everything in a vivid and understandable way. She's very easy to reach and tries her best to resolve any issue you have. The homework and tests are very hard, so make sure to spend a lot of time studying and practicing your weaknesses.
Professor Akina is amazing, I highly recommend you take her class. She offers a lot of extra credit. Regardless of what professor you take, the course is still calculus so there is a lot to learn, although it is doable from someone who did not take pre-calc or trig. I started with subpar math skills and poor algebra skills. But got an A-.
Prof. Nakayama is the embodiment of a sour patch kid. She can be sweet, understanding but also sound condescending. But she's good at what she does, she'll break it down & work w/ you on it. She has the passion for math. Take at your own risk. Be on point w/ submitting work & keep track of your BB for all announcements as they are frequent.
An amazing math professor. She does explain the lecture really well and gives homework every class that is due before the exam. Provides sample exams. Attend lectures, do the quizzes and homework as well as the sample exams it should be an easy A.
Prof.Nakayama is a truly great professor and is highly recommended very nice and professional!!
Normally she is great at communicating with people in general. But I took this class in summer and it was freakin hard as hell. Do not take. Constant Homework, Fast Exams, and Confusing Lectures. DO NOT RECOMMEND!
She is an amazing and caring Professor. Loud and clear lessons and she is very lenient with grading and makes sure that everyone understands the class lesson. She also gives a ton of extra credit opportunity. Take her if you can!
Honestly, I can't understand half the things stated from the lecture. The quality of learning is horrible, you're going to have to teach yourself everything if you want to get by in her class. You won't learn anything.
She's a great professor and makes u feel right at home :)
Don't take her. She doesn't comprehend that the students are learning via videos and may take longer to understand the materials. Additionally, she is very unorganized with her handouts and will make you take responsibility for her unorganized work.
hard class, were the exams on paper or on computer? someone pls answer me
Professor Nakayama makes discrete math enjoyable. She was very lenient, understanding and accommodating. Although the class is flipped learning, she curves and provides ample opportunity to get extra credit through class participation. As long as you come to class, do all required work on time you'll do great with her. Highly recommended!
Do not take this class with her. She is very condescending and nasty to students she does not like. I would ask her questions and she would point-blank ignore me. I would go up to her after class and she would continue to type away on her computer. She refused to tell me about my grade for the class.
Worst professor ever. Do not take this class with her. Makes fun of kids for not understanding the material. Clearly picks favorites. If she doesn't like you she will make it known.
Highly recommended. I am not a math major but Professor Nakayama made the math understandable and painless. Best advice: Do all the homeworks. If you do you will have no problem on the exams. Great teacher!
HORRIBLE! She's biased and has obvious favorites. There is a lot of online homework and despite rejecting extensions, she reopens everything in the last week because her favorites asked. Her instructions constantly change so don't trust what she says. She goes off topic a lot talking about her personal life. Avoid her if you can.
Be prepared for her to embarrass you if you don't know the answer yourself. Steer clear of this class even if its your last option.
she was one of my favorite teachers after transferring for my first semester. come to class, complete your homework, establish a relationship with her. just participate and she will like and respect you. if you cant come to class, COMMUNICATE!!! she literally let me miss my midterm and dropped it as my lowest grade. i was one of her favs tho so idk
She did not teach anything in class , just told us to do the homework. You will not learn anything in this class. And she is a mean teacher. Not recommend this professor.
taking this professor motivated me to write my first review to help others avoid her. Rude, does not teach class, messes up your grade while grading and if called out has an attitude about it. Can not keep track of her own assignments. I'm doing fine in the class, but this is the first professor I believe is genuinely unprofessional.
She always grades quizzes wrong, she makes these jokes sometimes every time you ask her a simple question and it just gets annoying. She always makes a mistake and she never really answers your questions. She is nice though.
bro just don't
She does not teach, has a terrible attitude, grades quizzes wrong, has favorites, and is extremely unprofessional.
What did I learn from watching videos of math 120? Nothing!! It's not her fault, it's the math department of QC who doesn't know how to run a department. But she made sure everyone passed i believe or in other words you can call her the curve queen. She has a sweet attitude, just enjoy it rather taking it seriously!
She is one of the meanest teachers I have encountered. If she likes you, you will get good grades no matter what, but if she does not, you will not get good grades even if you stay on top of everything. I regret a lot taking her class.
Math 120 was horrible. All materials are available online, including recorded lectures, so she doesn't actually teach anything. Every class, we were expected to self-study the material, then show up to the class to do classwork. Needless to say, class attendance was horrible. What's the point of showing up if everything can be done from home?
Professor Nakayama is an excellent teacher and one of the best math professors that I have ever had in Queens College. This is my second time taking her class from Precalculus to Calculus. She is always available after the class if you have any questions.
There are worse profs but there's also better. The most inconvenient part of her class is the fact that she frequently gets off topic and talks about her personal stories whenever a math problem reminds her of something. Other than that, she's generally nice, very knowledgeable about the subject, and tries to help as much as she can.
If you 1) pay attention to the syllabus and 2) have an open mindset and a willing attitude to learn then you will be guaranteed to pass. The professor is very supportive and will help if you have questions about the topics. In addition, she is very organized and makes deadlines suitable to realistic expectations. I've got no complaints, absolute 5.
I took Dr. Nakayama's class for the summer section for Math 114. Even before the class started she was highly accommodating to my needs with my concerns especially as I haven't taken math in 3 years. She is very organized, straightforward and fair. Just be prepared to do your work and ask questions. You will be sure to succeed and learn a lot.
The professor was very impressive, she demonstrated high knowledge and explained all concepts well. I will take her classes again.
very nice and understating
I took Dr. Nakayama one year ago in Math 115, and I am currently retaking her again for Pre-Calculus. I also plan to take her Math 141. She is very kind and extremely knowledgeable about the material. Nothing ever feels rushed because she follows her calendar so the teaching is organized and effective. She is nice overall.
Everything you learn is basically online but i think that's actually better for math classes because you need to practice at home. She is actually nicer than all math teachers I've had before so, just do your work and you'll be fine. Homework every class quizzes once a week,(2-5 questions) and exams are literally just the homework with different #s
