real nice guy, but extremely boring class. goes over one topic till he's blue in the face. if you have a hard time with math, he's great. otherwise, you'll spend class sleeping. real easy tests, mult. choice.
He is a very easy teacher and easy to understand. He doesnt go fast at all so if you have problems with math ask questions and you wont be behind at all. The tests are really easy. He does take attendence every day so make sure you go.
Very Easy Class. Just have to pay attention and not fall asleep and you will do good.
he is very easy. he also let you use book on the test.
Easiest math i have ever taken. Teaches like you are in middle school. Goes over material until the whole world understands it. Overall great teacher, must take for math if you get a chance. Really cool in letting you retake tests. MUST TAKE
Oh my god how boring can you get?!?!? I know math is boring but he made it really really really boring. Yes, he is very easy and everything but I'm in college to get a better education...not get taught like i'm in the freakin 3rd grade!
Great professor, make sure to do all the reviews for the tests. Attendence in manditory. Overall good Prof.
Great professor. Lectures are clear and understandable. Homework is voluntary and counts as extra credit on the tests, which are open book. Takes roll at the end of class, so it is OK to come late if you want(he doesn't really care).
Easy class. Very helpful. Teacher ensures everyone understands. Homework assigned for extra credit. Slow paced. Tests are open everything (book, note, calculator, etc.) able to retake them. Drops lowest grade. Easy A
very boring class, very nice prof, very easy prof. i would definatley suggest taking this class because it is really easy. i barely showed up and i got an A and didn't even have to take the final.
A very underatanding type. If you get behind or don't understand...go see him. He gives open book test. Recmd if you A. don't care about math or B. you are bad at it. He's a little disorganized but with 100 plus students I would too.
Great guy, and very understanding and nice. Class is really easy it's one of those can't fail classes. He is also understanding of absences and retakes. Take Him you wont regret it!
Very nice professor. Easy class. Try to show up on test days. Very little study required. Class is very boring but if you got to take it you might as well take it with someone easy and nice.

Excellent!
Its easy, get to use your book on all tests except the final. So hard to go to class though because its realllly boring. Very nice guy, one of the nicest at UTSA.
Sooo Boring, even for math! All he does is read to you out of the book. On the + side you do get to use study guides (Complete them!), text and extra credit homework on Tests. Not incredibly hard but quite dull.
Great class, teaches from book, allows open book tests, extra credit for handing in homework, understanding of lateness & unattendance, gives good hints on the hard questions on exams, all are equal weighting (including the final). Great to do well in.
An all around nice guy. Very willing to clarify certain elements when prompted. I'd reccommend him to anyone who needs a little extra help in math!
Knows his material. Takes attendence every class, and does not like you leaving early. Goes very quickly, but does ask if everyone understands. If you have a question, ASK! Homework prepares you for his tests. He does a review and lets you know what is going to be on the test, so nothing is a surprise.
Class attendence a must. Does not like people leaving early. Extremely knowledgeable, maybe knows it too good. Teaches extremely fast. Tests are open book, but if you dont know the material, that means little. You need to make an effort in this class, but a B is very possible.
This class isn't hard, but it isn't easy. As long as you do your homework, and understand the subect; you'll pass. What he teaches in class is exactly what's in the exams. Cortez is a really good, and a fair teacher.
if you are a good math student, this is the greatest class for you. its almost a waste of time if you dont really need a lot of math help. you get to use the notes and the book for the tests. if you arent a good math student though, i would suggest another teacher. he doesnt really explain a lot of things well. overall though, i liked him.
Hes a really nice guy!! Only allows 3 times to be absent. Do homework, you get 10 extra pts on test if you do. Gives reviews before test that are almost exactly alike to the test!! Allowed to use book, review, and notes on test this class is an easy A!! Great Guy!
first half of the semester is review if you have taken college algebra. second half of the semester is calculus and he goes extremely fast and just repeats himself when asked a question; lots of the students are lost.I passed by spending lots of time at the TRC. good luck! Nice guy, just not a good teacher in my opinion.
What? This guy cant even write the examples from the book on the projector correctly. If you aren't good at math, take someone else. He has no clue what he is doing. And dont ask questions, he ignores you or can't answer them if he tries. :( I had a friend that took Jones and said he was really good.
Just went over problems in class. There was no homework nor any interaction with the class. Not stimulating at all. Must go to class!
Attendance helps you drop lowest test grade. The class is easy, I fell asleep a few times. You can even just do the reviews, which are identical to the test, and then show up for class if you know the material well & are guaranteed 100s.
Do not take this professor. He is increadibly dry. This is the only class i have ever fallen asleep in. He didnt take attendence this semester but will drop your lowest test score. He only writes the example problems there are no short cuts. I never attend class and i am passing. Only take if you are good at math to begin with. Good Luck!!!
He is a horrible teacher! Don't take him if your not good at math. He just does examples out of the book, doesn't answer your questions, and puts questions on the test that he never taught. And if you have a question he never answers it correctly. Can't teach matricies or derivatives at all. Do anything to get out of his class.
if you like math and are good at it, take this professor, he gets right to the point. he doesnt babyfeed you like you were in high school. you have to take the initiative and practice and learn yourself. you have to put in the effort, so if youre lazy dont take it. if math comes easy to you, youll get an A.
His tests are open book and open notes. The tests are hard as hell, but you can find out how to do them. I never did homework or studied and hardly went to class. I am horrible at math. This is my 3rd time taking this class and I am finally going to pass. I got a C but I'm also a dumbass. Take this guy if you have to take math.
cortez is a good professor. he doesn't explain things extremely well, but he eventually gets the point across. i thought this class was reallie reallie easy, but you kinda have to show up because he recalls who's there and who's not. book, notes, and calcs were allowed on tests and quizzes. had practice test that were basically the test itself.
He is a nice guy but you really need to have a solid math background to do well in this class. He basically just goes over problems in the book in class and doesn't teach much. It does help that he lets you use notes and book for the tests and final.
He is a good teacher, if you study and you go to class you shouldn't have trouble, but I did not so well on this class. He drops your lowest test score so it helps a lot.
very easy!! Follow the book and it will be okay. He just goes over examples in class. Does give practice homework, but it is not graded. Focus on the TESTS and the FINAL. Final was about 40% of final grade. Study if not a math person
Great teacher, get to know him. Visit him in office hours ALWAYS helpful and kind. DO GOOD ON FINAL.
he just teaches out of the book..he never really made any of his own questions and writes out each example in the book. This class will be extemely easy if you own a graphing calculator..If you don't, then I would get one!!( plug everything into it and you will A's every test) he is not that great at teaching but he offers his office hrs for help
prof. cortez is a nice guy, but he goes through the material too fast
Cortez was ridiculously easy, he just works problems out of the book everyday, never gives reviews never gave home work. I failed every exam but two and you will have exams every week like clock work and I still recieved a B take him but only if you dont plan on learning anything lol over all nice guy bad teacher.
Prof. Cortez is a nice guy and very lenient. He even lets you borrow his calculator if you forget yours on test day. The thing about him though is that he goes way too fast, doesn't explain things well, as if you already know how to do it, and his handwriting is messy and really hard to read on the projector. Nice guy, bad class.
He's a great professor! Make sure to always bring your supplies because he does NOT tolerate it a lot of the time when you don't have what you need. He's good with emailing, answering questions, etc. and he's very insightful. He drops the lowest test grade if you show up and take all of them. Also, he's very helpful when you have questions-patient!
He teaches kind of fast but it is directly from the book. Every test and even the final is open book/open notes, a lot of the times he'll give a practice test before hand. He drops the lowest test score. I suggest going over what you do after class each day because if you arent good in math it will be a lot to remember for the comprehensive final.
easy easy easy! Every test is open book, open note. You don't even need to go to class that often. I am not a math person and I just study the chapters and hw before each test and I do just fine. Theres about 6 tests and one cumulative final. HW is optional, but is extra credit points on tests for turning it in. he is very linient and funny also!
Prof. Cortez is incredibly leniant but not very willing if you have trouble with anything. He is also incredibly boring and mellow. I would recommend taking a diff. professor if your at all interested in creating a good mathematics foundation. I did not prefer his teaching a single bit.
This class was a breeze. But you defintely need the book. He gives homework as extra credit. And lets you use every material including your textbook on the test. I got an A without any hassle. He responds to emails very fast. However, he didnt really answer my questions doing his office hours. But it didnt matter his tests are multiplechoice. EASY!
Best word to describe this prof? BITTER. Took his class in Summer 1 bc ratings looked good - yeah right. Everyday Cortez did 3 things: took attendance, read the book verbatim the entire time and said he hates summer programs and is ready to retire already. Very unhelpful and unapproachable. Would not take him again.
Moves way to fast (especially for a remedial course, HELLO that's why were here!) He is rude and doesn't seem to care about teaching or the student. I would never take a class with this professor again. If you aren't too great with math, don't take this prof.
Read book, took attendance, no hw for summer session...which was not helpful, very uninterested in teaching, little to no office hours of availability, an hour and half class was cut short 30 min every day...what did i pay for? had to self teach since i didn't learn a thing in class.
His class is easy and homework is extra credit but he goes on rants during class about how our generation is terrible at this or is wasting this etc. Class is useless and he doesn't take attendance. The only reason you would want to go class is because its the only way to know what the homework is or when tests are is to show up. CAP Kids: Easy A!!
Thought this class was going to be a breeze...unfortunately it wasn't. He's nice. and boring. and...well don't take him!!
Just stay away from this guy. i took him because of what I read here about him, but I was wrong. He acts like he doesn't even want to be in the class, and he goes through class like an auction. I'll never take him again!!!
easy class..open book/note tests. But his lack of interest in teaching and being there truely rubbed off on me..so I started not attending class and not studying..and I didnt get my A that I wanted. So its a gamble..do TRY in this class but if youre good at math (unlike me) you will make an easy A
Professor Cortez is truley not a bad guy. All tests are open book and open note. There are a lot of tests so you probably wont go 2 weeks without having one. All homework is extra credit. If you take out the time to study for about an hour for each test and do all the homework you should be more than fine to get an easy A.
Professor Cortez is okay. He sometimes zooms through the material, but if you ask questions then he'll help. Homework counts as 5 bonus points to your test grade. Tests are open book and open note. You have about 7 tests and a final. Just be familiar with the material and you'll make an A like me.
He was really enthusiastic about teaching, but he did give lots of extra credit and all test and quizzes were open book, thought this would be an easy A but I got a B. Very Dissapointed...wondering if i even got my extra credit. Oh and he doesnt use computers to post grades so you cant check anything.
This teacher is satan himself. He is an awful professor that does not know how to teach. He shows that he is very good at reading though by putting the book on the projector and reading right off of it. Only good thing is tests are open book/note.
Prof Cortez isn't hard.Attendance is not mandatory.I would only go to pick up the review&HW assignments.HW assignments are extra credit problems from the text book.He hands out similar reviews as the test & you're allowed to use the book on the test. I have the book w/unused math lab.Goes for $180 email me for a good price [email protected]
i just want to get more info on this guy.. is his hw on my math lab? are the test multiple choice?
I dont understand why people are rating this guy low?? He gives clear practices problems which often are on the test! Also, tab out your notes and book and use them on the open book tests. This is my first math class in 6 years! and I have a 100 average, just use the book and come to class... EASY EASY A!
Tests can be ambiguous, even if open note/open book. No real math concepts in 1043. If you want to put minimal effort in a class, take him. Boring as hell, doesn't even have blackboard set up. Not challenging at all, but still got some low grades.
great teacher. he knows his stuff but if you do not respect him he will not help you.
Not the best but not the worst. He is the only professor that teaches 1043, which all cap students need, at the least. Go to class so that he sees your face & ask questions. The book & notes can be used on the test & you need more than just a simple calculator. Study & read the book, & do your hw. That will ultimately determine your final grade.
All tests are multiple choice open book and note. Homework is optional but I highly recommend that you do it because he will add extra points to all of your tests. Keep your tests to help for the final exam. The easiest professor to take if you're a CAP kid. As a teacher he came off as unapproachable (for me) but he will help you if you respect him
This teacher is not helpful and is rude to students and I mostly had to teach myself the material. If you are not good at grasping math material, don't take this teacher. CAP students, this class is fairly easy as long as you are mediocre at math. Make sure to keep all your tests and do the homework for bonus points.
An arrogant and grumpy person. Nonetheless, his course is relatively easy and attendance is not really mandatory. Could get an A if you put minimal effort.
Very easy class. You can use your textbook and your notes on each test. You can easily get an A without trying, but don't take it for granted. You still have to put in a little effort otherwise you will do bad
Do not take if you have a hard time with math. Terrible at explaining things and easily angered by questions. Not very focused. Not at all helpful even in his office hours; its obvious he doesn't want you to be there.
Not a very good teacher but he's very easy and everything is open book. Don't expect to know when tests are
Very grumpy professor. Never returned emails, always seemed like I was inconveniencing him with any questions. Makes it fairly easy to do well in class with open-book tests & extra points given for homework, but doesn't seem interested in actually helping students learn.
this professor knows his stuff but does not know how to teach it. I think he starts losing interest in the class when he see the students not caring about the course. if you're good at math, take it. OPEN BOOK EXAMS. if you are horrible like me, then not even the book can help. seriously you need to know the material
Learned absolutely nothing from this teacher, all he does is read straight out of the book. doesn't use blackboard so you have to go to class every once in awhile to find out when the test will be. Tests are open-book and he drops the lowest grade. Easy class, but expect to teach yourself out of the book. his lectures are boring and pointless.
He is a little below average as a professor. His class is easy but you technically have to teach the material to yourself through the textbook because he isn't very good at explaining the concepts. Easy A though. He lets you use your homework, textbook, and notes on all his tests.
Okay this man is teaching is easiest type of class. Let's you use the text book and homework(which is he does not even grade) during tests, Awesome! But, his tests make no sense! He expects you to think like he does, and assume that the population of the US is 4 mill instead of 3 mill, and then ruins your tests. Don't take him, you will regret it.
Easy class if you're pretty good at understanding math on your own. There aren't many difficult concepts, but I had to depend entirely on the book to understand things. He doesn't seem to care much about the students, as if he's tired of teaching. Open book tests (and final) and extra credit homework make the class decent.
He's very monotoned and boring. I wouldnt bother showing up for class. Just make sure you know all the material from the book in the chapter(s) for the test and youll do fine. Everything is open book but dont rely on that once test day comes. Make sure you know the material ahead of time!
Cortez is a funny old dude but def a curmudgeon...ppl would be late to class and he would call them out...just chill Mr. Grumpykins it's the summer session and I just got back from Lake Travis because I didn't get into UT:(. Tevs this class was okay, I learned this and that about not investing in the stock market 'cause he says it's no bueno.
If you are already good at math no need in buying the book or attending class. Doesn't care about attendance. Pretty good about receiving tests back on time.
Terrible! He doesn't teach math he just talks at you and follows pages from the book. No formal homework assigned, so no grades there. Only grades tests. Will let you know in advance when a test is. Tests are open book and probably to compensate for his lack of teaching ability. Gets irritated if class seems lost. WILL NOT HELP YOU UNDERSTAND MATH!
Okay guys! Yes I accept he can be super boring but jeez this class is easyyyy. Ive gotten 86 and up on all test and on one of them I had no idea what it will be over, swear, and still got an A on it. AND youre allowed to use your books, notes, calculator etc in the test!
This guy is a joke ! I mean that in a good way , super easy class, open book, and open notes for test, also lets you use your calculators. Cant get any easier for a Math class.
I took Cortez for algebra and honestly I wouldn't recommend him to anyone who actually wants to learn. Don't get me wrong this class is pretty easy due to the open note tests, but as a teacher Cortez doesn't explain the problems well AT ALL. Basically this class is teaching yourself out of the book.
Cortez is possibly the worst teacher I've ever had. If you aren't good at math, don't expect him to help you understand. I did better in the class by staying home and working from the book than by going to class and listening to him talk. I had to completely self-teach to get an A. He lets you use notes and the book on tests, so those are easy.
I have been in advance math all my life, so this class was the easiest A of my life. He does not assign homework and all of his tests are open book and open note. He class is extremely boring, but he explains concepts well.
Lectures move very quickly. very hard to follow. It's easier to just learn from the book or homework. A lot of homework with little time to do it. Gets irate when he thinks he isn't being paid attention to. Generally friendly excluding that.
Cortez is a good person just not a good teacher. He would get confused with his own explanations and would expect you to figure everything on your own. Takes attendance everyday and gives homework. Although homework is not mandatory, he states that homework is the extra credit, so it does help your grade. I wouldn't take him again.
Cortez reads straight out of the book, so don't worry if you miss class. Homework is extra credit so I'd suggest to do because it only helps you. Drops lowest test grade and gives plenty of extra credit.
Got right to the point on what we were learning, never dragged out examples more than needed. Really liked the help that was given. Gave take home test and the test in class are open book.
Professor Cortez didn't really teach the class anything that wasn't in the textbook. I'd study the day before the exam and make A's. You get to use your textbook and notes on every exam. Easiest class I've ever taken.
Taking Professor Cortez is like not having a professor at all. His "lectures" consist of putting textbook pages up on the screen and just talking about them. Does not work problems and does not explain how to do them. The upside is that all exams are open notes and open book + he drops the lowest test grade. Easy class if you want to teach yourself
Very straight forward, easy to understand. doesn't ramble, homework is for extra credit. funny guy
If you are okay with reading the book and basically teaching yourself the material with my math lab take Cortez. He doesn't go over much in class, but he does provide plenty of opportunities for extra credit, and all your tests are open note. But if you are poor in math like me don't take him you will struggle.
Very easy to pass his class. Show up... or don't... it doesn't matter. He doesn't count attendance.... ALL your tests are open book (including the final)... he doesn't care for the homework... and he gives you extra credit...(all we had to do was send him a picture at football games for extra credit)
