Great teacher! He makes physics interesting :)And he's always helpful. You can tell he loves teaching! If you're ever considering a physics course...make sure he's your prof =Þ
SUCH a good prof!!!!
One of the most interesting and fun teachers I have ever had
I agree with the others.. awesome prof, highly reccomended. Classes are very well taught with lots of demos and great examples, while exams and essays are graded fairly.
The best Physics prof I've ever had. He used lots of demos, and his lectures kept me interested and involved. He was really fair on marking, and although the exams were kind of tough, they were on content that was well-covered. I definately recommend!
Haha, anyone who shows pictures of Gallileo's middle finger gets my vote. Wicked professor, and I'd recommend him to everyone, especially with this course. The demos are awesome, and he keeps it very interesting.
This prof is seriously the best prof at the UofA. Highly recommended!!
Dr. Al is an awesome teacher! I looked forward to attending his class because there was always something cool, different and interesting waitng to be demonstrated/taught to us. Kudos to him, good stuff, if you have the chance I would highly recommend him.
The best prof I've had so far..and I don't even like physics
Wicked prof! Fair exams
It was my favourite class that term, I loved attending, and I hated physics with a passion before I took his class. It was even worth the money I paid, which is rare in university!!
Wonderful teacher, and a wonderful person
Highly Reccomended
I liked him cause he was nice and pretty easy
This guy made me actually like physics - that's huge for me
He is amazing. There's a demo everyday, and he makes everything really interesting! I would definetly recomment it.
I agree that Dr. Meldrum could quite possibly be the best prof at the U of A. Actually, guys, if anybody is considering taking one of Dr. Meldrum's classes - DO IT! He is a fascinating prof and makes all the material interesting and clear, and his passion for knowledge is contagious!
awesome prof, best one i have ever had. very interesting and made physics very enjoyable. looked forward to going to his class!!:)
This guy is awesome! I absolutely hated physics before I took his class. He does demos every class that help you understand just a little more. Definitely recommended.
He makes Physics fun. I liked physics before hand, but I really enjoy his class. He loves Space and will use it for almost every example. Some students have the nickname "space professor" for him.
Amazing job with the course (graduate experimental physics). He made three weeks of vacuum-pump material interesting! Perfect teaching style. Totally approachable, doesn't lack empathy. The course was a tad too easy though. Having no tests was nice. Should have had more hands on stuff.
Assignments weren't too hard, tests were on the other hand. Lots of application questions. Not the most helpful person-trouble explaining concepts in more than one way. But he made physics fun and interested more people in it. one of the better ones out there. high five.
awesome prof who is very enthusiastic about the course...he made physics fun and easy to understand. The demos were very helpful and he was very easy to approach. Best prof I've had.
Amazing. So funny and great.
Interesting class. Good notes. Fair exams. Excellent teacher. Actually teaches the subject. Take this class
He's by far the best prof I've had a U of A, and I don't think anyone will be able to beat him. He's passionate about teaching, and loves the subject. He brings concepts across in a clear and understandable way. If you don't understand, just ask. He's more than happy to explain any time and until you understand! Good show!
Dr. Meldrum is an amazing prof! I hated physics before I took his class and afterwards I actually started to like it. He loves teaching and he loves what he does and he explains things exceptionally well. He's very approachable, and I've heard more than one person say he's the best prof they've ever had. Take his class if you can, it's worth it!!
what is up with the CHILI underneath his name???
I have always hated Physics, but I have never enjoyed it as much as when I had Dr. Meldrum. He is easily one of the best profs that I have had so far at the U of A. We were banished to MecE, and he made the effort to bring his demos to us because the TA's wouldn't. If you must take physics, take Meldrum!
THE BEST PROF AT U OF A
This class was by far the HARDEST class I've ever taken at the U of A - (well maybe only eclipsed by Stat 265) - and I'm in 4th Year Mathematics! But Dr. Meldrum was awesome about helping explain concepts, and was always so enthusiastic about what he was teaching. I liked him so much as a prof that I've signed up for his Phys 124 class.
One of the best Profs I have ever had. I actually convinced friends of mine just to come and sit in to watch a University Prof who actually gets excited about teaching (not just research).
Dr. Meldrum not only explained the concepts with the utmost clarity, but made this class VERY interesting and applicable. No matter what discipline you study, this class should be a requirement (and I'm a psych major). Well done Doc.
He is very enthusiastic about what he teaches, and this makes his classes very interesting, I was taking physics just as an extra class, but because of him, I want to continue on with it! Excellent teacher
Helpful, easy and made a lot of sense. Less homework than others and the exams are pretty fair. kept the class really interesting by showing videos and LOTS of demos. clear and loud vocie and writes BIG. Get him at all costs!!!
Meldrum was an AWESOME prof. Definitely made the class enjoyable, only skipped one class for the whole semester. Final was tough, but know your stuff and you'll do fine.
Great Prof. Not a class you can breeze through, but if you work hard, and study his notes, you can do well. I found the exams to be tough, but I can see how they're fair. Dr. Meldrum is enthusiastic and very helpful. (The textbook isn't necessary except for extra practice and maybe clarity.)
this prof is really fair! just remember to practice all the questions in the notes and assignments! that will garentee at least an A-! work hard, go to his classes, and UNDERSTAND, don't just memorize, because he will have the exact same question from notes, and twist it a bit. The only challenging parts are the labs, but just remember to get help
Easily the BEST prof at the UofA. Meldrum is always trying his best to satisfy his students. Every class was interactive and entertaining as he always included a lecture, a demo, and multimedia. His exams are simple..only if YOU complete his assgn's BY YOURSELF. Unfortunately the class didn't get this and suffered during his exams. Got my A+
A hard class, really try hard on the worksheets. I didn't do well on the midterm, but because I really used the textbook for independent learning and extra questions, I ended up doing fairly(B+). As phys profs go you probably couldnt ask for a better one,
he is probably the best prof ive had so far. the easiest midterm ive ever written, straight from the notes. when you study for his midterm, constantly do his example problems from his notes but the final was the hardest thing ive ever written, you are on your own on that one but since i did so well on the midterm and assignments i still got an A-
Often does not make it clear why we are covering some of the material that we are covering, which would aid in understanding. Also was not very clear as to what would be on the midterm; as such some of the questions caught many students off guard. Hopefully this will help him figure out that the class need to be better tied together.
Meldrum was such a nice guy! You could tell he really loved what he was doing. However, his tests are quite hard. You have to read EVERYTHING (in coursepack and lecture notes) and wasn't to clear on the topics we should know. The lecture notes were kinda disorganized. However, he was a very enthusiastic and has a cute smile!
Best teacher I have ever had. Took this course for program requirements, I was dreading it, but it turned out to be amazing. Not much math, mostly theoretical, he focuses on concepts rather than nitpicky details. I thoroughly enjoyed this class, and he's a great guy.
Really good prof for teaching. Interesting and smart. If you've taken high school physics (esp IB) alot of the material will be familiar. Assignments can be frustrating sometimes. Midterm was easy but final was much harder. You really need to study. Think I went from a B+ or B to a B- which was rather disappointing. Recommended.
This class was fantastic, I highly recommend it. He was a great teacher who really knew his stuff, and you could tell he loved what he was doing. I recommend writing down what he says as notes and adding it to the posted notes, they aren't too clear. Great guy!!
Excellent Prof, I didn't find him quite as enthralling as others, but still very good. Go to his lectures and take good notes, tests are based entirely on them. Don't waste your money on the textbook. Likes to test relatively obscure things, making tests challenging, but a prepared student can still do very well in the class.
One of the BEST professors out there. Make sure you really understand his notes for exams and really try the assignments on your own. If you try, you'll do fine, he's an absolutely amazing professor and attendance isn't that hard to keep up, as he's one goodlooking prof ;)
Really good professor. Make sure you really understand your stuff. Assignments and exams are on the difficult side. Recommended.
Meldrum is a great prof! I didnt do as well as I had in the class but im really really bad in physics. He had all the notes online so if you missed classes it wasnt such a big deal. Hes soo clear with his concepts and I recommend him, his exams are tough but class averages are super low so if you study and get the examples, it will be good.
He's an okay prof. Only gives an hour for 20 questions during the exams. And sadly, the assignments were only worth 5% while the final was 50%. But as usual, the averages were around 50. His questions were definitely tricky, but many of the conceptual could be found in the notes.
You could tell (especially in the later sections)that this was his first time teaching this course. The lectures in which he had a tough time getting his point across will probably be clearer next time around but otherwise he was awesome. His tests were rather hard even with reading the textbook. The best intro phys prof at this school period!
Don't really need textbook because he has really good notes. Most of the questions on his exam are either you get it or you don't. You won't have to go through 4 formulas to get to an answer. Overall, excellent prof.
I LUV Meldrum. He is the nicest guy ever and he is soo smart and explains concepts soo good and his video clips are sooo good and I LUV him. Exams are hard all right but straight out of his notes, his notes aren't that great but if u go to class and really pay attention this you'll LUV his notes too lol he's an awesome prof
He is a great guy and a super prof! I am really bad at physics and yet got an A in his class all because of him cause he is really really enthusiastic when he teaches so you'll never get bored. Just a note: that chilly pepper means he's hot right? well he's not. At least not anymore, he might have been when he was younger
He's a really fun and smart teacher, he speaks fast but clear enough to let you understand all the concepts while enjoying the little jokes he makes or just random things he says. He's very helpful and friendly, and he's questions are not hard, just a bit tricky.I LUV him :)
Does lots of demos in class which is helpful, his assignments are impossible, and his midterms are similar to assignment and class notes but twisted enough that if you don't 100% understand the concept you probably wont get it. Didn't find him very helpful outside of class and found that he looked down at you if you asked 'dumb' questions.
Such an awesome prof! His midterms are difficult, but everyone does badly on them so it evens out the playing field. Very funny too, not much of a physics person, but he makes physics more enjoyable.
Great prof! super funny and makes it interesting. demos are awesome and he does lots. Assignments are easy marks and super helpful to keep up with material. the exams are straight from things discussed in lecture and in the notes which makes them straightforward if you review that. he is also super helpful with everything. highly recommend this guy
You can tell he really enjoys physics and his passion is reflected in his teaching. Does demos and videos to make it more interesting. Approachable. Humorous at times. Some exam questions are very difficult. Need to know the concepts and really consider the question. Even then you may not get it. However some are directly from his lecture notes.
hard exams. some assignments are a joke while others are hard. he makes you feel retarded when he goes over the exam though. his formula sheet is disorganized and it's hard to see things on his notes sometimes as he squeezes everything onto the same line. He's alright. Class average is around 55%
His lectures were awesome. He made sure to include experiments to try and relate some of the material to the class. He was by far my favourite prof. Watch out he tests directly from lectures, not what is in notes. Also his tests are all theory, so you cannot go into the test without knowing how the theory applies to the real world.
Great Teacher. Amazing Notes. If you focus in his class, and undertand his notes- you're all set. His exams are pretty much his notes and previous exams...
I'd highly recommend him. He's really funny and adorable with his mannerisms. He teaches well and his exams are pretty fair, but be prepared! There are some hard questions. It's nice that he gives notes, but use the textbook for more reference. He does lots of fun demos too. Exceptional prof, such a good guy!
Decent prof.... I found him to be better in the first half of the course. Later, he seemed to be always rushing. He was also always updating his notes last minute which was annoying. Assignments were OK. Exams were difficult and some questions tested demos so you basically have to go to class. And seriously, what's with the chili pepper?! not true!
To say he cares about what he teaches is an understatement. Super engaging! Exams are challenging and very concept and application based, but are usually based off of labs, assignments and notes. Nice guy, very funny and made the material interesting. Recommended!
Pretty chill professor. His notes, I know lots of people like them, but they are pretty terrible. He has TONS of useless derivations that make studying even more complicated. His exams are quite tough, I wish there were more calculations. Some conceptual ones just screw you over. He's a nice guy tho.
Didn't even take the textbook out of the plastic and I got an A. Class averages are really low although I can't understand why. He was probably the clearest prof I had in terms of his lectures. He's super into what he does and that makes him interesting and engaging. There are some pretty cool demos. Midterms and finals were all same difficulty.
Ok prof, the problem is with his notes. His notes are your main study material and they're not very clear. He tries to put way too much info on a slide, which ends up confusing you. He speaks clearly, but sometimes makes simple concepts over-complicated. My advice, read the textbook. Hard Exams, but still an ok prof.
He makes classes interesting, but his tests are quite hard and his examples can sometimes be hard to follow. Good professor, but I found this class difficult.
Great prof for concept based learners. Very interested in what he teaches. Problem comes at exam time where he expects you to be able to do calculations that were never mentioned in class and only hinted at in assignments. Textbook saves you here. His notes are filled with "I'm going to do this in here and not bother to test you on it" sections.
I found Meldrum's class awful and painful. Everyone told me how easy he was and I actually found him brutal compared to Kaminsky because he's boring and his tests are extremely unfair because he only discusses unimportant concept in class and then expects you to be able to calculate random things. One of the worst profs I've had.
People say he's an easy prof but he really isn't. His interest in physics is obvious, but his notes can be confusing. Even if you have a solid understanding of the notes and examples it doesn't matter because the exams have questions that are completely random and never mentioned at all in lecture. Concepts aren't hard but exams are ridiculous.
terrible prof. he doesnt teach what he tests and gets way to excited about stuff that is way beyond the scope of the class
Had Professor Meldrum for both 124 and 126. His midterms are fair but require you to know theory cold, the trick is to study the material as it's taught as each chapter builds off the previous one (super important for 126). His final is hard so be prepared and he includes questions from lab on his tests. Received A and A- in his course.
Exam's were based on a lot of theory questions as well those involving calculations. There will usually be a few questions taken from the practice midterm/final or the hw. He teaches very enthusiastically in class, but you don't need to go to class because he posts excellent notes. Also, his notes follow the textbook exactly so give it a read too.
Awesome Professor! His tests were challenging, yes, but they were reasonable and weeded out those who understood and those you just tried to memorize everything. I wish I was taking more physics classes because his enthusiasm and interest towards the subject are astounding and superb. Great Prof!
Dr. Meldrum is a great guy. The course and his exams are slightly tricky, so be prepared for that. However, he is very helpful if you go to his office hours. His lectures are interesting, and he is very passionate. I really liked him, and the course was decent despite the fact that I don't really like physics to begin with.
very much concept based professor which screws you over on exams. the final exam was wayyyy harder than the practice and there weren't enough calculation examples in class to know how to do the questions. Read the textbook... and understand concepts. solid.
Dr. Meldrum is a really good prof, one of the best I've had in my degree. The class was pretty easy for me, but I could tell when certain questions would be really difficult for most people - and it showed with lower averages. Super helpful in office hours and actually takes an interest in your success. Would recommend!
terrible prof. i actually liked physics but this guy expects you to know things he doesn't even cover. than he goes on random lectures about stuff that isnt even related to the course and you learn nothing
Meldrum is hands down the best prof I've had. His exams test your true understanding of the subject matter and so in studying for them, I learned a lot about physics (test-related and life-related). Really rewarding class I think. The grade you get reflects how much effort you put in, plain and simple. Highly recommend!!
Dr. Meldrum is a great prof. He was always willing to help out after class. I emailed him many times with questions and he always got back to me. You need to study both theoretical and numerical problems to do well on his exams. Exams will cover questions from homework, labs and his notes. Most important is to study his notes and then read the text
Dr. Meldrum is a great prof! To do well on tests you need to actually understand the concepts not just memorize and regurgitate. I used both his notes and the textbook. He was extremely helpful in elaborating or further clarifying anything I did not understand. Physics is my weakest subject and I came out of the class with an A.
He's a wonderful professor. His interest in Physics is contagious! I highly recommend taking his class if you have to take physics. His exams are very fair but some questions are tricky and require thinking, you just have to undertand the theory. Nothing is random nor unfair in his tests.
Wonderful prof! Kind, helpful, understanding. He goes above and beyond and does over-time office hours to help students. Very enthusiastic, and makes it physics interesting. Don't bother getting the textbook, he has all his own iPad notes.
really bad at staying on topic..really monotonous voice.everything i learned in class just went over top of my hear, never went through. i half the time slept through his class…DO NOT chose this prof if you don’t care about physics and are just taking it because you have to.
Midterms and final are extremely difficult. Definately understand what you're doing in the homework assignments.
Professor Meldrum is a extraordinary professor! His lectures are a bit dense and his practice problems are challenging - I definitely recommend reading his notes before attending class (which he so conveniently writes up for you!). Make sure to supplement his lectures with textbooks readings, things will make a lot more sense afterwards!
He's awesome! Very clear lectures and AWESOME notes. There is a lot of course material, but if you pay attention in class and read a few pages of the text, you're good to go. He will make himself available and always answers questions. Truly awesome prof!
Honestly, I don't really understand these ratings. Meldrum is probably the worst prof I've had in my two years at the uni. My number one issue was that I found that he didnt teach. He more told you how to do something, which I find doesn't work for physics. Hated every minute of this class. Made me miss Kaminsky.
Meldrum does a great job explaining the concepts (albeit a bit fast-paced). His questions are geared towards understanding the material, which is difficult because physics isn't easy. Luckily, the curve is low. Think logically and you'll succeed. Textbook not required. Great for long-term understanding and for those going into medicine.
Overall good prof, splits up his lectures with a lot of interesting videos/demos. Pay attention as there's the odd question on exams about them! Exams do a tricky thing where some questions are straight from notes with 1 small thing changed, and sometimes you don't realize it's different from the notes. Overall helpful and pretty fair!
Horrendous. Meldrum professes how he loves "concept" questions which test understanding while his lectures and notes do not teach you those very concepts to begin with abysmal in conveying key points as well. Midterms were ok and the final was tough. To the person below me who somehow has an A, 1 week before the final exam, you're delusional. Avoid
Great physics teacher, his tests can be challenging though. Make sure you go to class, and definitely review his notes mainly (compared to the textbook), and you'll get at least a B+
Great prof! He is always willing to go the extra mile to help you as he knows lots of people struggle with physics. Has weekly meetups to help students with his (very tough) assignments which helps a lot. Exams are tricky but fair. Put in the effort and you'll do well. Only down side is he moves pretty fast so stay on top of the work and notes
Although his teaching is very clear, and although his notes are very helpful, his tests are not to be underestimated. Be prepared to know the material well and to apply it to new situations. Very helpful and supportive. Buy (or obtain) the textbook for practice purposes.
really difficult exams but I really respect the guy. He is super helpful, super smart and full of passion for the subject at hand. I found interest and knowledge but my mark was no good!
Good teacher, but his final is extremly hard and if you are not good at concept questions, don't take him.
Amazing prof, as long as you go to class and really understand the material you will be fine. His exams are very tricky but if you put in the effort it is really not that hard.
Would not recommend, he will post his notes at the beginning of the section but will constantly update them. Be prepared to rewrite your annotations multiple times if you want a complete copy. did not completely finish the last section and he was unclear if he was going to test on the extra material. Funny guy but confusing teacher.
As someone who sucks at physics, this class went surprisingly well. His email responses weren't very helpful but I think if you ask in person he's better. Many test question similar to questions in the note/iClickers, etc, and some were repeated on the final just to test understanding. Class average around 60-65%, so curve's nice
Pros: -Clear, concise notes which he uploads to eClass before class -Engages the class through various demonstrations and an evident passion for physics -Almost every concept on his midterms/final are displayed in the examples in his notes Cons: -Tests can be challenging -Notes are so good that you aren't always engaged. Textbook needed? No.
Pretty good prof. Exams were fair, given that this is physics. Averages around 60-70%. The final had ~5 questions from iClicker/previous exams, so know how to do them! Not tested on lab material, and textbook not needed. Didn't finish the last half of nuclear physics but most material covered fairly well. A bit of a challenging class but doable.
Meldrum is clearly passionate about physics. He explains concepts perfectly, and gives awesome in-class demos and movies. Needless to say, he's awesome. And ladies, his chili peppers are well deserved!
Incredibly knowledge professor, you leave the classroom fully understanding every concept (or you might think you do) but when his exams come you are screwed. I understand getting students to think outside the box but his exams were brutal, they barely paralleled anything in the lecture (maybe a max of 2 questions). Easier profs have same avgs.
On the first day, he explained that he is not trying to trick us with his questions. For the rest of the semester, he tricks us. I am not kidding. Not a typical physics prof as he dose not make you do much calculations. He tends to focus on the theory, and typical testhw questions are usually very abstract theoretical questions which are hard!
Terrible professor. Gives abstract notes and doesnot explain concepts clearly.
Honestly, he's a good professor. You don't need the book, unless you want extra practice. When I asked him about questions from the textbook, many seemed beyond the scope of what we would be tested on. 2015 had a real tough final but the previous year finals we had as practice seemed fair. Best physics instructor I've had, just put in the work
Dr. Meldrum is the best physics professor you will ever have! His lectures are always interesting and he always tries to relate class material to real-world scenarios. Text book was used mainly for practice questions and sometimes for concept understanding. His exams are really tough, but the class is always curved.
Great prof :) you can tell he loves physics. Not much class participation (because it's so huge) and not much homework. All exams were multiple choice. Deciphering his notes and reading his powerpoints (that were all provided) was difficult, so it really is worthwhile to go to his class and just sit back and listen. He explains everything well.
Amazing prof, best at U of A hands down. His lectures were really interesting and clear, and whenever i emailed him with a question, he answers quickly. I highly recommend taking this class, even if you aren't that interested in physics. His tests weren't too bad, the hardest questions were in the homework assignments. Didn't need the textbook.
One of the best profs I've ever had! He loves what he teaches and is very clear when explaining stuff. His exams are exactly like is practice questions on his powerpoints and lecture notes. Weekly assignments are easy and taken straight from lecture material. Show up and get an amazing grade
Best professor I've ever had! Funny and full of passion all the time. No doubt he loves physics and even more willing to teach it. Phys 114 is relatively not a hard course and he made it really entertaining as it suppose to be. Really a grade booster. Definitely would take his class again whenever I can!! ;D
Dr. Meldrum is obviously very passionate about what he teaches and it shows in his thought-out and engaging lectures. He provides both PowerPoint notes and condensed notes packages for each unit, which are both helpful. In class demos help drive home the content and he is crystal clear at office hours.
Dr. Meldrum is obviously very passionate about what he teaches and it shows in his engaging and well-planned lectures. He provides PowerPoint notes and condensed notes packages for each unit, which are both helpful. In class demos help drive home the content and he is crystal clear at office hours. Rsponses to emails are prompt.
Really good examples and makes sure that all the stuff we learn is applicable to real life situations. Makes sure that lectures aren't boring, shows a lot of videos. DO THE PRACTICE EXAMS! A lot of time the questions will be repeated or changed slightly. He's a great prof with great biceps. 10/10
Took this class because I had to for my degree and I loved physics in high school and had an easy time figuring it out. This prof though made really bad practice assignments that where all calculation based and unrelated to the topics. The syllabus said that this was supposed to be all theory no calculations. And the midterms are hard but fair.
You are doing yourself a disservice if you don't take a class with this professor. If you don't love physics yet, he will make you.
Dr. Meldrum is one of the best profs I've ever had in physics! Uses videos, figures, and demos during lecture and his notes are pretty good. Assignments were more outside the box type questions, but quite easy too. DO NOT BUY THE TEXTBOOK, it's useless. Midterms and Finals are very fair for a physics class, average around 64%. Amazing prof!
Dr. Meldrum is my favourite ever. He cares so much about his students, and his love for physics is contagious. Make sure to do the practice exams and look over all of the ASSIGNMENTS before a test! He does use questions twice!! The theory is difficult but very do-able if you listen to what he says in class! Overall, his class was awesome
Really good prof. Class has really interesting topics, and Al makes them accessible for non-physics majors. Very helpful in his office hours and also very welcoming. Cares about student success. He is obviously very passionate about lecture material and makes it very interesting, often like a story. Textbook is helpful but not required.
Great prof, lectures were always interesting.
NEVER SKIP CLASS some of the materials taught cannot be found in the textbook! (you can try to search it up on google but it will be extremely painful). I found the quizzes very difficult but the exams are okay. overall not a difficult elective if physics is your forte!
Interesting lectures and homework assignments. Really likes Albert A. Michelson.
Dr. Meldrum is a great guy, I would for sure take another class with him. He went through the material a bit too quickly but if you see him during office hours he explains things really well. He is extremely patient and kind and really cares about how you do in the class. Assignments were fair, exams can be tricky sometimes.
Al's questions are on the scope of 'modern' physics literally he teaches physics as the world is growing, adding new questions every year based on scientific discoveries. Now he is a solid lecture prof, but if you get confused in the lecture it will be difficult to come out with a good grade. There is really not much practice provided by him.
Dr. Meldrum is a great professor! His lectures are always interesting. Notes and slides are very useful. Highly recommend you to take his class even if you're not interested in physics. He explains everything so clearly and is easy for you to understand. Exams are not too hard but some questions are a little bit tricky.
Dr. Meldrum is fantastic! Gives super engaging lectures and is always adapting to fit new scientific discoveries. Also he only tests on things he went over in class so textbook and his written notes are totally optional. Make sure you go to class though, because the lectures are pretty irreplaceable.
Dr Meldrum is greatttt! Always reply to emails quickly & caring and patient. The course material is interesting and easy.
Dr Meldrum was honestly THE BEST prof I ever had at UofA. He actually cares about students; not only academically but in terms of their future work life. I've been to his office so many times and he's so helpful and caring. Honestly, I wish he could teach the rest of my physics classes. He's sooo good. Definitely recommend.
Dr. Meldrum is such a great guy! His passion towards physics and the topics covered in this course was so refreshing and genuine and it honestly made me more interested in the material. Now, physics is REALLY NOT my thing, and I didn't do super well in this course, but Dr. Meldrum really made it worthwhile. This course was pleasantly frustrating.
As a prof Al was actually able to make me enjoy the subject (even though I generally hate it) because he relates it to ideas about the world today; lectures were amazing, but his exams were HARD. The material is simple enough but there are always a few trick questions and the midterms are only out of 17 multiple choice, so any mistake is critical!
He is an excellent prof! You can tell that he is very passionate about physics and is very caring about students. He provides feedback and assistance. However, his tests and assignments can be difficult, especially if you miss a lecture. Make sure to pay attention to EVERYTHING he covers during lectures because anything can be tested.
Al is an excellent prof! Very passionate about physics and is very caring about his students. He made me enjoy attending lectures because he makes them interesting. Be sure to attend all his classes and pay attention to EVERYTHING he covers because anything he talks about can be tested, and his exams/assignments can be challenging.
Alkiviathes was a great prof. His enthusiasm of the subject matter is infectious. We had 8 challenging quizzes (top 7 worth 20%), 2 midterms (15% each) and a 50% final. All lectures were recorded, but it was worth it to attend the zoom meetings live. He provided good feedback and quickly responded to emails. Exams were fair, but challenging.
If you are looking to take a physics course as an elective then look no further than PHYS 114 with Dr. A Meldrum. Not alot of math to be used, just need to understand the concepts then you'll be able to get through.
I enjoyed taking his lectures. He explained things in a really clear way, and if you attend the class regularly and study the materials, you'll be fine for midterms and final. (And he did perpare another final exam for international students who is in different time zone). Overall he is the best professor I've ever had!
I personally really enjoyed his lecture style. The lectures were all very interesting. He was approachable and seemed like a pretty good guy. The tests can be a bit tricky however, especially with the wording. The tests and homework can also reference something that he mentioned in the lectures, but does not have written down in the slides.
Dr. Meldrum is a really nice guy, he cares about his students. Lectures are very attractive and you can learn a lot of interesting things in his class. But be aware, it is not a GPA booster, exams are very tricky and hard, with only few practice questions.
Good professor
This is the best prof I've had for a very long time. His lectures are very fun and innovative. He explains things very clearly and the tests are not too hard(and it's curved!). Got an easy A+ and enjoyed this course
Awesome dude
Very difficult tests but not impossible. He really cares about the success of his students.
This was his first time teaching Phys 144 so I understand its not perfect but I had such a difficult time understanding his notes. Classmates were 10x more helpful.
Despite this being Dr. Meldrum's first time teaching the course he was very good. He obviously loves what he does and it translates very well into his lectures as they were all interesting and fun. Homeworks were fair and well-designed. Final and midterm were very challenging however with the class being curved this doesn't hurt your mark too much.
His exams are absurdly tough and there was even a question wrong on the mid-term that he didn't change.
Lectures were great and easy to listen to, final was tough, midterm was an absolute slaughter. Posts all the lecture slides online, but be sure to know them by heart because his tests will make you feel like you don't have nearly enough time to write them. Assignments, labs, and the curve all give you some wiggle room for when you inevitably bomb.
Had very few useful practice materials, and spoke so quickly that it was extremely difficult to complete and supplement his (incomplete) notes without missing what he was saying. Takes a long time to get used to. Records his lectures, but the recordings are echo-y and difficult to understand so don't depend on them. Had no practice tests at all!
The prof was great and it was evident that he loves physics and thats proven in the way he teaches. He's really rooting for the students although he does not give out any practice for exams and very little practice questions after class. Overall you will learn a lot in this class but aware the tests are HARD.
Mel drum is an extremely dedicated professor. His love for physics shines through every single lecture, and it really draws you in. Although, he speaks quite fast and at a higher level so be prepared to listen and listen well. The exams and assignments themselves were very challenging, but overall definitely recommend Meldrum.
The best professor I've ever had, and now I want to take more classes with him. - Clear grading structure (weekly assignments, two midterms, and a final) - Great at explaining concepts and has engaging lectures (his knowledge and passion for physics shows) - Exams are extremely fair, very similar to questions given in class and practice material
Unexpectedly my favourite course this semester. Professor Meldrum's lectures are really interesting and you can tell he loves the stuff he teaches. I'm usually sleepy in the mornings and his lectures kept me awake, too. I hope there's a PHYS 214 someday because this Professor is legit. 10/10.
The passion Dr. Meldrum has makes this one of the best courses I've taken. Literally just sat in class and listed to him speak. Weekly assignments are easy, although the exams can be a bit challenging. 50% weighting on the final will probably cost me a letter grade, but I don't really mind because Dr. Meldrum made taking this course worth it.
I am a student not even in the sciences and I have to say this was the best class I have ever had! Lots of interesting information and Professor Meldrum's were engaging, very informational and made me even more curious about the world of physics. I would highly recommend taking this class! Assignments are easy but two midterms and final can be hard
Professor Meldrum was an amazing professor, one of the best professors I've ever had. He made class very engaging and was very passionate when teaching. I was at an A until the final, which was harder than I anticipated and made my grade go down a lot since it was worth 50%, but I am glad I took this course since the topics covered are really cool.
This professor is legendary. The lectures are like watching a live documentary on physics. He's probably one of the best professors I'll ever have. Assignments are light and quick to do too. Only gripe is that the exams can be challenging; but the class is still absolutely worth taking just for the experience.
Amazing course and professor. I took it as an option and would absolutely do it again. He was very passionate about the material and lectures were very engaging. Online assignments were easy so long as you came to lectures. The midterm and final were more difficult, but again, not extremely so as long as you had come to lectures.
Meldrum's passion for physics is evident, but his fast-paced lectures and challenging exams require diligent note-taking and study. Unstuck ai proved helpful for exam prep, alongside the free textbook. With dedication, you'll learn a lot, but be ready for a tough ride.
I heart Dr. Meldrum
W man. Alkiviathes is the GO(ptics)AT
Meldrum was one of the most passionate professors I have encountered. He does lots of research in optics and as such, is very passionate and knowledgeable on the subject. He really took the time to explain real world applications and limitations. Examinations are difficult but the assignments are very interesting and involved.
Meldrum was my favourite professor for this semester. He very clearly cares about the topics he discusses and your ability to understand them. If you show up to class, and do all of the practice materials afforded to you, you will do well. He repeats a lot of questions on tests and gives a fair test of your understanding. Loved him. 10/10 guy.
Lectures are so entertaining and you can tell he cares and is so interested in the topics. I found the material pretty easy to grasp as it's mostly conceptual, easy PHYS credit and especially with him. He also videotapes lectures so if you miss class its easy to catch up
Course is underrated in terms of difficulty but great prof who is nice and very passionate.
Kind of a mediocre prof, teaches from notes with many mistakes, assignments are extremely easy and don't prepare for the exams, which are pointlessly difficult. Practice material is useless as the answers are given right below the question. 2/5
His tests are a bit diabolical (averages are quite low but curved), but he definitely has a lot of passion for the subject he is teaching and tries his best to make classes rather engaging and to give a ton of practical examples! Make sure to study all the niche details on the slideshows though.
lowk the goat. Lectures are engaging bcuz you can tell he has a lot of passion for what he's teaching. During office hours, he's willing to sit down and work with you until you understand! Tests were difficult as they tested if you really understood the concept itself but just redo the practice papers and you should be okay.
