You gotta love Al. He makes you think critically about history.
Definitely one of the worst professors I've ever had. His assignments weren't difficult, and the text was great, but his total lack of communication (it was an online course) and assistance was unacceptable. I've never had such a frustrating experience.
This class was a waste of my time! Too easy and all biased information! I feelas if I was cheated in getting the REAL information on Social & Cultural History.
Extremely uncommicative! "Does NOT CHAT", has occassional office hours...better known as never. Very difficult to get a hold. Frustration would best describe this class. Never returns or answers your questions. A hands off kind of guy!
Al is a great teacher. i would not be influnced by the last negative comments and understand that what you put in with Al is exactly what you will get out of him - Great Teacher
Lazy, lazy, lazy, lazy, and lazy. Not to mention lazy.
Al is a great teacher. I agree that what you put in is what you get out with him.

al is one of my favorite teachers ever. his class is hella funny. i do not know why everyone is baggin on him so much. al is tight.
hes great! This was a telecorse and if I ever needed help he was there. If I ever had a time conflict with tests he would work with me, so I could take them at a time that was good for me. If you want an easy history class he is the man to take!
I hated this class his method of teaching is all over the place he never gives clear info or notes. Everything he tells you is from a very biased opinion.
WEIRD TEACHER MAN. I NEVER KNEW WHAT GRADE I HAD IN HIS CLASS. IT WAS TOO UNPREDICTABLE. I DIDNT LIKE IT. BUT IT WAS HELLA EASY
although history 102 can be so hard, he help to make material underestandable for all students. there are many homework assighnments exist....so if u missed some...u will be able to make them up!! recommend his for all history classes.
I took the class online. If you want to get in contact with the man.. good luck. If you want a really easy A take this class. Put in an ounce of effort into the assignments and two tests and you will pass no problem
Al is the obmb, man! Even in times of a class crisis, he is great! He works with you, gives you extra time, and if you are having personal problems, he knows about it and understands. The man is easy to talk to and has a lot of things he is involves in, so might seem distracted, but a great teacher
the best teacher in the world
i REALLY LIKED HIM...HE WAS A GOOD TEACHER..TWO ESSAYS THE WHOLE CLASS NO TESTES EVER...COOL GUY IM TAKIN HIM FOR 101
I took both hist 101&102 online, and found both very easy. 10 assignments total (each a .5-1 page chapter response), online forum discussion, plus a 2-4 page midterm and similar final. Must be self motivated! I basically did the bare minimum for everything, and got an A in both 101 and 102.
This teacher is so crazy and he makes the class very enjoyable. I never knew i would like history until this teacher came around. Al makes everyone laugh each time you have his class. Any teacher that has a sense of humor is a cool teacher.
I took his online class as a 10 week summer course. I did only enough to get by and received an A in this class. You have to do 10 writing assignments and some weeks he has a movie list you can choose from. You also have a midterm and final paper that you have to complete. He gives great feedback on the papers.
Really nice guy, very biased though. Get to know him, it will be benificial to you. His lectures are a little hard to follow and take notes from, but listen and learn the concepts...that is key to his class, not little facts. Very outgoing and can get the class laughing, a bit crude though.

His class was fun. He makes it more interesting and its not boring and the class was easy
Mr. Smith is the shiznit! He is such an intelligent person and he loves teaching. His lectures and reading are difficult but that is only because he wants his students to succeed and be smart and able to turn brian gumble on that A*!
This dude is fine for a teacher! His class is easy and hes hella cool. Keeps it real...Honest...Nice...Fun to look at. LOL! Dude is just off the chain. He cool. :)

Good teacher
He's funny real kool and to the point. No beating around the bush or "sugacoting". He let's the truth flow and stops lies from entering his classrom.

Dang, this dude is such a tight teacher... I have him for two classes...afro american history and california history and he keeps the class actually wanting to come back. dang, he has us rollin when he makes his smart butt comments

this dude is off the hook...hes a down to earth teacher tells it like it is and no ****...
I have absolutely no idea what is going on in this class. I hear he's easy but I'm not even sure what assignments I'm to be doing.
Possibly THE WORST online professor out there. I'm a history major, and although we've only had three weeks of class, it's terrible. He does not help, has a terrible structure for the course, and is the most unclear online professor. He does not give specific chapters asigned but tells you to skim the book and look for answers. That's not teaching!
I hate history classes and I got an A in the class. All you have to do in the class is watch (10) movies that go along with what you are laerning about and write a paper about how it relates. There aren't any tests/quizes. The final is a paper you write about how something has changed over the years. An easy A!!!
This guy is totally not my style of prof. He tries to relate to the class by using dirty jokes and language. It's an easy class, but his teaching is basically: "Go read your book." I've been lost during most of his lectures.
I took his class online. His instructions and assignments are not real clear. No specific chapters are assigned just topics. He doesn't really respond to questions for help. Not very involved. Class was basically self run. Not the best online teacher or class I have taken and I have taken plenty.
the worst teacher I've ever had. He used the classroom for a platform of his opinions. We talked about two things all semester, neither relating to history. He was all over the place and had no ryme or reason. extremely un-clear.
Ummm, class was kind of easy? He never told us our grades the entire semester. It's Christmas Eve, almost 2 weeks after the semester ended and none of us know our grades still!!! Hurry up Al...
I am extremely frustrated with this instructor. He virtually ignores his online classes, and what direction he does give provokes more questions than it answers. I had to go to his office four times during the posted hours before I was able to catch him. I am a self-motivated student and have taken several online classes; this has been the worst.
As a an A student, I find Proff. Smith to be very easy. He's a nice, and funny. Truly, this is a history class for non-history majors. To a serious student, this class will be a blast. You'll have to try hard to get a B in the class. Easy A for the hard-working students.
I am a returning student who was drawn to the readings online. Great online class for self-motivated learners. I believe he has a passion for the subject matter that will translate better in the classroom setting. I am highly libral and see a alot of uptight comments. Trust me, college requires only that you open your mind and learn new things.
I thought the in class discussions were pretty good, very thought provoking. The homework was pretty easy if you acctually read the assignments and the essays were easy as well as long as you kept up to date with the class discussions and material from the book.
OMG. Avoid like the plague. I wish I had dropped this class last spring like 1 of my friends did. Screwed us all over! C's for everyone, even those who deserved As or Fs. Never showed up and never graded.
Professor smith is a very good teacher! i took him in the spring 06 and took hist 155 and had to take him again! it is really easy to get an A in all his classes, I believe as long as you show up to class, listen to the lectures, take notes and do the assignments that he assigns!! He doesn't give much HW. His mid-terms and finals are take home.
He is a good teacher, knows his subject and can easily relate to students and their needs. There are no tests for this course, all assignments are papers. If you go to class, pay attention and do the required reading which is about 30 pages a week, the assignments are not hard and it's an easy A. Best history teacher I have ever had.
he was such a cool teacher. I looked forward to his class I learned alot. I failed his class and I have no idea why. I never got any of my papers back so I never knew what my grade was. I did alot of extra credit but that didn't seem to help. I liked him but don't know why he failed me.
Smith is an excellent professor. He is extremely knowlegeable and funny. The subjects of the course will get you to think hard and will challenge your beliefs and opinions. Come into class with an open mind. No tests, just mid term and final. There is also a million ways to earn extra credit. One of the best teachers I've ever had.
Prof. Smith is a really good instructor. He knows his stuff. He gives you constructive feedback that isn't that bad. At the midterm I had a D but after working hard I earned a B. Not alot of homework. Midterm and Final is basically writing an essay or doing a project.
Professor Smith is awesome! I loved attending class; hes smart and really funny. There is a lot of reading to do each week but the mid term and final are take home. I highly recommend taking him!
I took him in fall 06. My favorite history class yet. I was a returning student and was very interested in his discussions. The essays were no problem for me. I went to class, took average notes, and scanned the book. If I had known about him before being so close to transfering, I would have taken another class from him just for fun.
Tough class to take online. Sometimes he was not real clear on what he wanted done. As long as you do the work though, you should be fine. A LOT of reading!
Took his online class. Very straight forward. If u email him with a question he probably would email you back.... in 2-3 weeks. But your classmates would help you with questions too. Just follow instructions carefully. Class was a breeze
One of the best teachers I ever had. You have to have an open mind to really enjoy his lectures, but you learn a lot if you do. It's crazy how much stuff this guy has in his head.
I took this online&had to drop for fear of earning an F. The ENTIRE CLASS was left in the dark over who had to do this ridiculous "make up midterm" he posted one day&we were all e-mailing him&one another in a panic trying to get some clarity. He's also passive-agressive: if you ask about a grade he will purposely "just take longer to give it." RUN!
I think this guy is O.K. Should have taken Dr. Nuell, though. Smith is really depressing all the time and never has very many answers for his depressing thoughts. He likes to complain all the time. Also, he teaches human rights, NOT history, but relates it to history, thus, a "history" class. A lot of unnecessary language, a TON of reading, too.
Does not communicate, took almost 6 weeks to return grades on first paper, 4 weeks to return grades on mid-term, still have not received grade on second paper. Late posting instructions for final paper, then completely changed instructions 2 days before due date. Prof. Smith ignores e-mails as well as phone calls. Avoid at all cost.
Online class was a joke and a rip off.Smith was non-particpatory.He ignored emails/never responded to clarify.Never met his promises of grade delivery.Curric. evolved around Human Rights not history. Frustrating class to participate in when the instructor did not participate to the standard expected of online students. Constant mass confusion!
If you are a CONSERVATIVE person and sensitive- you might want to consider another teacher! If you can put his political views aside-he is an interesting teacher. I actually enjoyed him.
he's alright
one of the coolest teachers at MJC! Very honest about everything...
His class is more about his own ideas, and not history.I dropped his online class because his assignments were unclear. I was looking forward to taking History 106, untill I started reading the book we were required to buy...that was written by him.
I took Smith's online class, and his instructions and grading technique are fairly simple. DO take this class if you love learning about African American History, DONT take this class if you want an easy A. It's a lot of writing and reading.
Down to Earth kind of guy that makes the class fun.
He makes the class interesting with his lectures, gives an essay every week for 10 week but you can turn them in late and you don't have to use all the books on them and gives a lot of extra credit, for the mid term he makes you do a 5 page minimum on a question that has like 4 questions in it and for the final he makes you do a 10 page biography
I took his 106 class online. You can pass easily if you just suck up to him and agree with all his ideas (although they are a little random), once i figured that out I returned the book and still got an A without reading one word!
great teacher!! truly cares about his students and his curriculum. makes history interesting even for those who get bored easily. do ur work and reape the rewards!
I tried his online class but it was not for me.He depends on his students to tell others what to do.Major writing weekly, mid term essay. Required online discussion topics are supposed to prompt you every week but don't.You may do better in a classroom environment but I won't sign up for him.Not a true history class but his idea of history...
He is a good Professor to take especially if history is not your thing. If history is your major then I would suggest that you take him because he is a wealth of information on other topics other than the ones taught in class
Mr. Smith is a really great teacher, very open minded and full of knowledge. However if you are conservative this is not the class for you, because he if very up-front with views and isseus. Easy A long as you put fourth effort.
I took Smith's online class this summer and it was cool, very simple. Some people would ask questions that were clearly explained with the course syllabus, that did not req. him to respond to ?s. I have taken other online classes and this one is no different.Take Smith if you are not an idiot & seek untaught history,& you are open minded.Great teach
I've taken 3 history classes with Al, and I loved every single 1. His assignments are not hard, and his lectures are very interesting. A typical class is usually very engaging in group discussion. The guy is brilliant.
This teacher was off the hook really enjoyed his class. there is an essay every week without any quizes or tests. he gives you a chance to redo all of your essays except for the final or midterm essays. extremely easy if u doint pass his class you are an idiot.
I had him for Ancient World about 2004-2005. He never taught us anything we were suppose to learn and he did have times where he was absent (usually protest or something). Assignment were easy but not educating or fulfilling. I passed his class but I felt that it was a waste of time since I didn't learn anything at all.
I hear he's a great teacher, but avoid his online class. He is confusing and information and assignments are found on several different websites. He is completely inaccessable and grades take rediculously long to get finished. Ultimately it is my opinion that he doesn't care in the least about his online students.
This guy is such a flake, I'm going to send him a bottle of head and shoulders when this class is done! Taking his online class, MJC will be lucky if I don't sue them, for allowing the absent minded professor to teach, who never checks in with the online class, doesn't return emails, and is just an idiot. Not what I paid for.
Professor kept the lectures and teaching criteria on a realistic level that all students could relate to. He encouraged participation and welcomed all comments and cultural contributions.
He is amazingly clear as long as you ask. this teacher is excellent
As long you do the work your fine. Each week there is a critique due. there is no test or quiz. Just do the homework and the extra crd. Nice person. If you work hard, you get a good grade basically.
strange class. it seems like he got to design the course himself and fill it up with bitter repression stories. just use the phrase "white man repressing the black/natives" in every homework assignment to get an A. theres only one paper a week nothing else. look out for his personal problem days, careful what you say. usually pretty nice guy though
DO NOT DO IT!! Stay away from this teacher. This guy is crazy. I got an A in this class & worked my butt off, but I feel like he didn't even read half the papers I spent so much time on. He has you write a lot of papers and answer stupid questions...his instructions were clear as mud. He's tenured, so he's not going anywhere.
Every semester I take a class with Mr. Smith, do you want to know why? ITS SUPER EASY CLASS! Just one homework assignment every week, its not alot of writing like some people say. The mid-term is a three page essay which isnt bad. The hardest part is the final. If you do all the extra credit assignments you can even bomb the final and still get an
I like Al Smith, he is simply the best. His assignments are pretty straight forward and if you work hard you will ace the class. He is very friendly and outgoing and makes the students comfortable in his classes. I would take his class over and over again.
He's a really funny teacher and pretty laid back. Enthusiastic and incredible smart, he knows his stuff. Gave us 8 critique writing assignments and 15 weeks to do them. You can also do extra credit and other assignments to cover the 8 critiques. If your into structured classes and wanting to gain a lot from your history class he is not for you
He doesn't care for his online students so try to avoid taking any of his online courses.
I have no idea what the people that say bad things about Professor Smith are talking about because Smith is one of...if not the best teachers at M.J.C. I usually can't stand History it bores me but Smith makes it interesting and fun...yes I said History can be fun! He's super knowledgeable and likes you to give your pinion...the best hands down!!!
Don?t take any ONLINE class with this man. He will ignore you and belittle your intelligence. When the syllabus attempts to provide clarity, it does so by saying "refer to syllabus". He states on his personal (non-WebCT) webpage, ?I have ABSOLUTELY NO control over anything but teaching?. His web page, from a web publisher?s perspective is ?horrid?.
Out of my 70 units here at MJC, I have never encountered a teacher who is so unorganized, unclear, or less helpful than Al Smith. I can't believe how poorly he interacts with his students online. He offers no help but instead will copy and paste from the syllabus adding exclamations points to show his disgust. Hopefully he won't be here next year.
Although Mr. Smith isn't too difficult to pass, there are way better and easier history instructors at Mjc so if you the opp. to choose, i wouldnt recommend him. He can be kinda rude sometimes too
Al brings an infectious passion to his classroom and opened my conscience to many aspects of history and social issues that I hadn't previously considered or appreciated.
SPECIFIC TO ONLINE CLASS: I would not take any of his online classes because he has too many students in them and not enough TIME. There is no reply to emails and the communication is HORRIBLE! The class is pretty much easy, but you will be confused! Has a lot of SARCASM and is more self-learning!
I really like Smith he is really cool and offers alot of extra credit so there is no way you can fail. He can get really angry sometimes but it just shows how passionate he is about his topic. I would recommend this class to anyone, its great!
You have to try hard to fail this class. He makes it really easy to get points. He is one of the best teachers I've ever had; very inspiring. Theatrical, funny, opinionated, smart. Really loves to teach and loves history. I recommend this class to everyone.
He's funny and he really makes you think.
He's a thought provoking teacher, he makes me want to ask questions all the time! I don't agree with all of his political views but at least he knows both sides of the field and not just his own. He's a well kept man, takes care of the people in class and genuinely likes people I believe. You'll like him!
Hes a really great teacher, speaks his mind and is completely honest and upfront. knows how to capture students attention and keeps them interested. youll learn something new everyday and hes hilarious. strongly recommend him for african american history
Wow i just dont know what to say! the best teacher ever. EASIEST class, and if you want to just laugh, please take him hes amazing. All homework are due anytime before the semester ends. Please take, it will be the best class for you!
Wow i just dont know what to say! the best teacher ever. EASIEST class, and if you want to just laugh, please take him hes amazing. All homework are due anytime before the semester ends. Please take, it will be the best class for you!
LOVE HIM! I WILL DEFINITLY TAKE HIM AGAIN IF NEEDED. HE IS SO AWESOME AND KIND. ALL HOMEWORK ARE DUE BY THE END OF THE SEMESTER, AND WE HAD A DO AT HOME FINAL. NO TESTS AT ALL IN THIS CLASS. PLEASE TAKE SMITH!
STAY AWAY! He is a terrible teacher. He is very scattered. Took almost two months to grade our Midterm. Is not clear on anything. Just stay away!
I really enjoy his classes. He keeps them interesting and fun. Probably the best professor on campus! But then anyone who likes cigars is good in my book!
HATED THIS CLASS. He's extremely lazy, unhelpful, and slow. We turned in one paper and it took 2 months to get it back. He is so self absorbed and complains all the time, he also has a bad attitude if you ask questions too.
Just like life, U get out of it what U put into it. Using text, film and lectures, Smith concentrates on concepts, not just facts, which help U understand cause and effect of history and how it has shaped the culture we know today. Thought provoking w/lots of writing that U do at UR own pace and express UR own opinions. Loved it! Cool guy.
hes great and knows his stuff. you wont like him if you are lazy
Constantly jumped around from topic to topic, I personally learned nothing. Didn't show up to class for three weeks, when I asked for helped he wouldn't ever provide me with thorough information and grades like he's a professor at Harvard.
Took his film class. You would think it would be a simple and easy class but he made it so complicated. First he wasn't clear on what he wanted or would give requirements for an assignment but would change them later on. Was also rude & mean when you asked for help. I got an A in his class but it was my worst experience at MJC. Avoid if possible
There is no way that Prof Smith missed three weeks of class. Perhaps the student who made that comment was the one who missed three weeks! Smith covered a LOT of ground and inspired me to pursue more reading and learning about the subject. Also, grading like a "Harvard professor" is better than grading like a high school teacher!
Professor Smith clearly believes that learning overall concepts from history is far more important than just learning random facts and dates. His lectures help you understand how our culture came to be what it is. I commend him for offering extra credit to students who take part in community service. Be prepared to write on a regular basis!
This professor makes things harder than they need to be. He uses a personal website and blackboard which are not consistent with each other which leads to confusion. The teacher is also very vague in his instructions and when asked to clarify you are met with unprofessional rude responses. Took 3 weeks to grade assignments. Stay Away!
I have mixed feelings about this professor. It wasn't your typical set up for an online class. There was not a lot of interaction and there were no lectures. This was a class that you had to be really self-motivated. However Smith was really understanding and easygoing. You got credit if you did the work. Great reading material and videos.
Al has many opinions, most of which you will learn throughout his class. I found his class particularly frustrating due to the hostile atmosphere I felt going in. He seems to have an issue with everything going on. In particular, he would get upset at the class when we were unaware of something that we were supposed to learn IN his course.
I took Al Smith's history 106 class last semester and enjoyed every second of it! He tells you what is expected and grades fairly. I would make jokes with other classmates all the time during classtime and he would laugh with us. He is very opinionated but very fun and I learned something new everyday in his class.
One of the most unique teachers I've ever had also by far the funniest and entertaining. He's different but in a good way. Very passionate, does not tolerate laziness but will work with anyone who wants to do well in his class. Experienced as if was a professor from a large university. Class is as easy you make it. Has a heart for disadv students.
Smith is an easy grader, do the work and you'll get a good grade. The class and the exams are easy, the only bad thing is the class is really long. He offers a lot of extra credit though and the final was a group discussion. Show up to class, do some work, and you'll pass.
He's really funny and makes you think, but he is terrible about grading. The whole semester I begged to find out my grade, he didn't grade anything until the last two weeks of school. And I found myself in a lot of trouble at the last minute.
Mr. Smith is an awesome professor!! His lectures are very interesting. He's upfront and tells it like it is. You definitely have to participate and do your homework in order to pass. He gives students the opportunity to make up points by allowing one to do extra credit, such as community service. If you are there to learn you definitely will.
This class gets you thinking....
Afro Amer Hist Not just for African Americans. No person should consider their education complete without a better understanding of this part of history that had been ignored for so long. As usual, Mr. Smith's lectures are fluid and complete. He is always open to questions and opinions of the students. Inspired me to pursue further readings.
Al Smith is a great history professor because he focuses on the causes and effects of historical events, not just the dates they took place. He really wants his students to be well informed of past and present issues in the world. It takes him awhile to grade things, but as long as you do the work, you will pass. Weekly reading review assignments.
Great teacher. He lectured using the white board and images off the internet for visual aid. He is very honest about history, and it was a most thorough history class. Our book is one that i kept for personal use because it was that good (A People's History of the United States, Howard Zinn). 2 weekly assignments. 2 papers. extra credit.
This teacher is awesome, he makes the class fun while being educational, instead of getting overboard with the lectures he gets to the point and makes things as clear and simple as possible, get ready to read and participate a lot but get ready for a cool teacher who makes history a fun and educational class
Professor Al is amazing! He is very passionate about history and it makes the class very enjoyable. He is very funny. Will take every class with him if possible.
Great educator! He may offend you if you aren't prepared to know the truth behind African American history, so be prepared and come with an open mind because his stuff is deep. If you fail his class its because you just simply didn't do his weekly assignments in which he give you tons of time to do. Take his class if you want to learn
Mr. Smith is an awesome teacher. I really liked listening to his lectures, and discussing some of the current issues going on in the news. There is a reading assignment due every Sunday and you have to turn in a question every week . Since he also teaches a film class, you will be watching movies too! Great class!
I had professor Smith for two months and then I had to leave school on emergency surgery. He is BY FAR the BEST professor I have had. He is very humorous and supportive. I am actually planning on taking some of his classes that I don't need just because he teaches it. He is very detailed and get to the point clearly. A+ from me!
Professor Smith is one of my favorites at MJC. I have taken several classes with him because he his inspirational when it comes to history. He is hilarious. He does NOT get grades back on time. He is a very busy man so see him during office hours for grades. All around great teacher.
Al where do you start. He knows what he is teaching. He grades normal if you put your work in you get what you deserved. He will talk with you about your work clearly. I took all the history classes with him. All his classes are fun he's funny I recommend.
Makes the class super easy! Have one easy assignment each week and no tests. Just a midterm essay and a final debate (you just have to show up).
As a history major, this class got me thinking, but was hard to endure from a factual and structural perspective. His syllabus and website directions clash with what he says in class, no grade feedback, text readings have basically nothing to do with his lectures. He's a really funny and nice guy who wants to help, but just doesn't have time to.
Smith is a good teacher who knows what he is talking about. He doesn't give tests, but I advise being in class to take notes, especially if there is an assignment coming up. Papers aren't too hard but put your effort into them. Overall good class and I would take another class with him again.
Great guy but a horrible instructor. Knowledgeable but unclear in instructions, avoids clarification, still no grades in last wk of semester, never know if you are giving him what he wants. If a C is ok with you after doing all the work & always being in class take it, if you care about your GPA, DON'T TAKE HIM!
Mr. Smith has been the most challenging for me personally as a student at MJC. I was interested in ethnic studies and I felt like I was cheated taking his class. He was abrasive and so I hesitated to raise my hand in class. We never received any graded work back during the semester and I received a poor grade in his class, while I had A's in others
There wasn't really any homework. Don't procrastinate on assignments. He doesn't grade on time I had a D until the week after grades were do then I recieved an A. His lessons are not boring his assignments are usually 200pts each. There was never really the need to use the textbook because I just used the Internet for my papers.
Smith is a great speaker and gives amazing lectures. Unfortunately he gives horrible feedback and does not grade anything until after the Final. His grading system was confusing and the homework for movie reviews did not matter because you can make up points for the final . He seems very unorganized and even lost my classmates final paper.
Awesome professor. No quizzes or tests, only weekly reading assignments with easy questions. One essay for midterm. He couldn't have made the class any easier. He cares about his students & makes his lectures very relatable. He is also very funny so the class is never a drag.
he is the best history teacher i have ever had. i loved his lectures as well as his teaching style; Mr. Smith made history fun.
Took his summer class honestly not that bad. 5 week course. You do an essay ever week he gives you a chance to turn it in late. Daily question. Not hard at all. He explains things easy and will go back and explain it again if you ask. 10/10 would take him again
I took him during summer class. No quizes or homeowork just an essay is due each week. And we turned in daily questions. His lectures are are really good , I learned alot from him. He's a down to earth teacher, he has his own personality. I enjoyed being in his class. Do the work and you'll fine. Its college so don't expect to do nothing and pass.
Check out his website to get a feel for this class, alsmithmjc. He is unorganized and takes a while to grade things. Videography's are due each week and notes too. Movies are chosen by us one week then his choice the next week. Altogether, a pretty chill class with MANY extra credit opportunities.
Great teacher and great guy
No matter what any of these other reviews say, Al is the best history professor at MJC. He genuinely cares about his students and wants them all to succeed. His classes are super easy to pass- you just gotta do your work like every other class. I've taken many of his classes and each one is great. I highly recommend him!!
Great Professor. I really enjoyed his class. If you put your effort in your work you should pass the class with an A. Professor Smith is really passionate for what he does. I highly recommend taking him, you won't regret it.
This proffessor is very inspirational. He is a little tough on students but he means well. His verbal comminication can get confusing, so refer back to his online syllabus and you will do just fine. I encourage you to take his class, you will not regret it.
Took him for history 101 and he was okay, easy class but I personally didn't like him. When you ask questions he'll sometimes make you feel stupid for asking(very sarcastic.) He is a heavy lecturer so you just have to show up. No test, but weekly online hw, a paper at the end of the semester and the final is a discussion.
By far the best professor i have had at MJC. Explains history very well, and he isn't boring. He sheds light on many things that other professors never cover.
I took his History 102 class during the summer and although it was 1 essay due per week he was very helpful and would give us a summary of what he wanted.
Not recommended. I was told that I had an A the whole semester, but when grades came out I was given B. I tried to contact him to discuss my grade but was never given a response. Take at your own risk. Other than that, he's a cool guy and knows his stuff.
Professor Smith has been a bright light for me this semester. Very understanding and engaging, and not without a sense of sarcasm (which is a big plus for me). Some may complain of little directions, but honestly he does this so that his students can be creative. If you put effort into this class, you will succeed.
Overall great teacher. He is hilarious and he really cares about his students and their progress. If you need help or have any questions at all he is there if you need him. He is one of the best teachers i have ever had the pleasure of meeting.
Hes a teacher that I feel comfterable around. He cared not only about your progression in class, but you as a person as well. I loved taking his class and definetly would take again. He always made lectures fun and his class wasnt too difficult. One of my favorite professors!
He is an awesome teacher but there is no way of knowing how you're doing in the class. He is very loose with due dates and assignments and it got confusing. His lectures are awesome, but don't take his class if you need a solid structure to succeed.
Smith is a very interesting professor and the work is really easy but you might not learn as much as you would with other professors the asignments aren't very history related
Smith had really good lectures. However he was very unorganized when it came to assignments. He rarely ever grades your assignments so you never really know your grade. Only a few easy assignments tho. the final was a debate.
Right from the start he starting spewing historical facts like it was nothing. He made very funny remarks about historical figures during ancient civilization about how crappy they were and such. Really outgoing guy, the final was a class debate.
Al Smith can be a very humorous person. But when it come to knowing your grade you will be referred to talk the "aid" that he has, and when it come to knowing the homework assignments you would have to be referred to his website. The website is very unorganized, and the aid that he refers you to isn't even there half of the time.
Smith is an Excellent and energetic professor. Extremely knowledgeable, his assignments are posted on his website, so that if you wanted to you could do them in advance. He likes to help students, but not always available in his office(make sure to ask the important questions in class and don't hold back. Fantastic lectures and extra credit too
His class was pretty easy. He is a hilarious professor and makes his class enjoyable and easy to pass time. I took the class during the summer and had an essay a week but the essays were pretty easy to do. He is a lenient grader.
Probably my favorite professor at MJC. Took him for both 101 and 102 and the class was incredibly interesting and enjoyable. He doesn't post grades at all but it's very difficult to not pass the class. Really laid back, easy assignments and just an overall great guy. Plus you get a potluck during the semester for extra credit, so that's pretty cool
professor smith changed my life and introduced me into a major i never would have considered otherwise. he is a passionate individual who cares about the well being of students and teaches you concepts beyond education, i feel that i have become a better person taking multiple classes and i have challenged my own outlook for the better.
well, respected professor, but overall very unorganized and hard to know what grade you receive in class.
Lectures were great, he was very enthusiastic about the subject yet never gave grades or feedback when asked, and to be honest, I don't think he knew it himself. The most unorganized class I've ever taken. No tests only one group midterm paper and final "project" so assignments were graded heavy but easy to do.
Professor Smith has a lot of knowledge of the subject matter but is too unorganized to teach it clearly. He spends half the class time talking about other things. Be wary of asking questions, he'll answer them at first but if you still do not understand and ask him again he will give you attitude and make you feel dumb for asking the question again
SocSc 154 was pretty easy and did not have too much work to do, just weekly videographies, a midterm, and a learning objectives project. But don't expect Professor Smith to be much help in explaining how to do assignments because he will just direct you to the class syllabus but his syllabus is just as confusing.
Took two classes with him and loved both! Lectures are informational/captivating. Attend class... continues lectures from previous day topics. Students must submit weekly questions for points. A few group assignments, a few essays, & one easy presentation. Keep track of graded assignments to know your grade and pay attention! Great professor!
Do NOT TAKE THIS GUY. I have never seen such an unorganized professor like him. The syllabus is confusing because he mixed with 4 three other classes that he teaches. He gets mad when you email him. So, you better find a professor that cares about your success.
I don't recommend taking his class. He is rude when he replies to emails. he takes advantage of poor students who are just taking his class by selling them his notes which he calls "the textbook". a complicated, unclear, and confusing syllabus. He is rude, unfair, and does not care about students. Don't take his class.
I dont know how mjc is keeping this guy. He is a tough grader. He talks about sensitive topics like race and other things. If you want to take this class to transfer, then find a different class. His class is the hardest thing I ever seen. Good luck.
Publicly posted students' assignment grades and used condescending language when people asked questions. His modules were confusing, but when people asked for clarification, he simply told them to "read the module."
Professor was cool but when I took this class it didn't really feel like there was a clear grading criteria. There wasn't a lot of assignments which sucked because we didn't get feedback on the one's we did so I never knew if I was hitting the point with the work. I'd suggest taking another professor.
The text book required was a reference book written by him. Also some say he is knowledgable, he isnt. He is opinionated. If you fact check 90% of spoken communication is not factual and his textbook also has factual errors probably because he wrote it. He also gave everyone a test he found online, he just laughed when approached about it.
I took his class several years ago. Professor Smith is a very funny teacher. He's very upfront about his far-left political stances and he focuses almost entirely on African American History, and taught nothing else. He was a pleasure to be around but unless you want to discuss nothing but racial and social issues for hours, do not take his class.
I have taken 4 courses with professor Smith, he is AWESOME! I feel that Al Smith really puts his heart into teaching and cares about his students. His classes are truly inspirational. I highly recommend his classes. His class was one of those classes that you remember for the rest of your life.
Took this class off recommendations and it was a huge mistake. Few assignments and the book assigned he wrote, when it finally arrived I noticed some inaccuracies. Didn't really have anyone intrigued in class and students showed up to watch movies. The class was easy but not worth tbh. I would suggest another professor if you actually like history.
