He didn't care how much time or effort you put into his class. He hates all of his students, except the one or two that had taken the class the year before, in high school. Test were very random, and they didn't go along with what he said in class.
Your grade is based on 300 points. He gives 4 100 point tests and drops you lowest test score. The tests are rediculously hard and the questions make no sence no matter how hard you pay attention and study unless you are a biology major. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS! Find someone else!

Didn't help at all and expects you to know everything
very poor instructional skills - not helpful - has difficulty teaching/passing on his knowledge
He has favorites, not approchable, expects you to be able to spell over 700 muscles, the doctors can't even do that. just because someone holds a PH,D doesn't mean they know HOW to teach.

I had a 3.8 gpa and I got a 1.7 in this class and studied more than I ever have for any other class. His lectures didn't relate to the $150 book and his tests didn't relate to either. He was really smart but didn't take the time or effort to help us understand. It was all memorization which left no time for learning
NEVER EVER TAKE A CLASS FROM THIS MAN! He is not at all understanding nor is he helpful. His lectures are long, yet organized. He is rather arrogant and unapproachable. He seems to know the material he is covering yet does not know how to translate it into terms that students are able to clearly understand. AVOID ANY OF HIS CLASSES AT ALL COSTS!

Avoid Al Wilson if you value you G.P.A. If I had read these reviews I would have never registered for his class. Why can't we have more professors like Gary Blevins? Stay with another instructor. He is not a nice man and has no business teaching at any level. Define STRESS, see Al Wilson
I am currently retaking this class....need I say more! ok I will, Wilson was one of the worst teachers I ever had. He has no emotions, and is not helpful at all. I don't even think he cares if his students pass, he's just there this void filling the front of the classroom.
HORRIBLE! This professor actually refused to let me retake any tests because i run for Spokane's cross country and track team and had to miss due to traveling. I confronted him about this in advance and he said life sucks sometimes...since his grades are based soley on tests you know what that means F!!!!! The lucky ones make it by with a C-

I've always done well at most classes but Al Wilson was extreamly difficult. I got a 1.6 in his class. I went to every class and lab and studied regularly but I still could not keep up with him. He is an extreamly difficult teacher and I only wish I would have seen this site on him before I decided to take his class.
Interesting, well organized lectures. Challenging exams.
The best class I've taken at the falls. Go by your notes.
you have to study but he writes down just about all you have to know in his lectures. the class was time consuming but not all that hard I barely read the book.
this is a great course but you got to study. wilson is awsome.
Difficult Bio 101, Very bright instructor. Be prepared to take alot of notes during class and more notes as you read the book. You are graded on 4 tests, he drops your lowest scoring test.
I love Mr. Wilson! He is a WONDERFUL teacher, by far better than anyone else I've had at the falls! You need to study to get a good grade, but he is more than willing to help if you ask him. He knows his stuff and doesn't like slackers. And he is surprisingly funny at times. I would take another class from him any day!
OK teacher. Tests from the notes. Drops lowest test. I liked the labs.
I also took bio from Wilson. This class has lots of memorization and you have to spell long names like actinopterygii. I thought it was great and I learned alot. I liked the disection labs best. I learned much about birds.
Very hard class. Teacher is nice but he makes you memerize to much and there is no real learning. Most teachers here let you bring notes to tests but not Wilson. We had to read almost half the book! I am a for point and I never worked so hard. I had to read every day to keep up!
Love Mr. Wilson. Excellent teacher. He tells you what to expect. Study the notes. Good since of humor and makes class interesting. I would take a class from him anyday.
Tells you what he expects, goes by his study notes. He drops your lowest test grade. Prepares you well for further biology classes. I appreciate the kind of teacher Mr. Wilson is.
Tells you what he expects, goes by his study notes. Prepares you well for further biology classes. I appreciate the kind of teacher Mr. Wilson is.
Mr. Wilson was a great teacher.I agree with others comments that everything on the test are always what is in the lecture notes. Although there is a lot of info in his zoology class, he does his best to help you understand everything. Great class..
Very hard class, but the teacher is very nice. Had tons things to study about, but all he gives in the class is in the notes, he does not trick you with the questions on the test, they are all clear, always multiple choice, fair grading. He adds extra 30 points to all points at the end, also drops your lowest score - one of foer tests.
This class is very hard!!! His test are extremely difficult. But the class was interesting and i love biology. Show up everyday!! He gets deffencive when you answer questions
Great teacher! He was clear about what he expects and is very good about preparing the student for his tests. Although the tests are difficult, take good notes and you'll do fine!
Great teacher! I only studied before class and got an average of 92% on my tests. As long as you come to class, take careful notes, and read the material, you will be fine. This class is very interesting and the labs are mostly pretty fun. Great prep class to more advanced scientific courses
good teeacher
Dr. Al Wilson is a great teacher. The class requires you to put in your part, but Dr. Wilson does a fantastic job of explaining things and using relevant examples to help you visualize certain things. His lecture time management is impeccable, and has a subtle sarcastic sense of humor.
I really enjoyed Dr. Wilson - he is really funny and I enjoyed the lectures. He is very clear on what he expects, and I really liked the fact that he had no problem enforcing his rules. Don't take the class if your a jerk off - he will call you out on it. I'm looking forward to taking another class with him.
i failed to understand his teachings and his tests were at all not pertaining to his lectures
He is such a great teacher! He actually writes down on an overhead what he wants you to know. He knows A LOT about this subject, and he is extremely helpful if you just ask. He is probably one of my favorite teachers here. The tests aren't too bad either if you just study your notes. I recommend his class!
Dr. Wilson was a great teacher! If you come to lectures, labs, and put in extra effort this class will be a breeze. I took him for Biolgoy 160 and the class was perfect. His lectures are easy to understand and anything he wants you to know is on the overhead. Just read your textbook, come to class, and you should be fine. Also, study for tests!
He drops the lowest test score, grade is mostly determined by tests, he provides scantrons, his lectures are interesting and he uses extreme examples of biological phenomenon to help us remember what would otherwise be dry facts.
He is very knowledgeable, which makes this class even more interesting. I really enjoyed Dr. Wilson. He is very straight forward and does not like it when people goof off or ask stupid questions. Pay attention, take good notes and study, and you will do great in his class.
Dr. Wilson is very organized, he will tell you exactly what you need to know for the tests, and his time management is impeccable. Attendance is not mandatory but if you want to know the information for the tests it is very important that you show up for all lectures and labs. Take good notes, study your notes, and you'll get good grades.
Everything everybody is saying is true. He's a very knowledgable teacher and he's an honest awesome guy, take his class. I didn't like biology and now I'm thinking about majoring in it.
Wilson is great to take over the summer because attendance is not a factor in lecture or lab. Obviously, to know the material you need to go but it doesn't affect your grade if you don't. Lectures and notes are everything in this class so take diligent notes and study them. I didn't crack the book once.
Professor Wilson is very knowledgeable, and is easy to understand. His tests were pretty difficult so just study a lot, study all class, lab, and book notes for the best chance of getting a good grade, especially on the final test.
Hard but fair.
I was expecting a brutal teacher, but Professor Wilson is great! He is straightforward, teaches the material, and knows biology like no other. There is no homework and the labs aren't graded; there are 3 tests and a final. All you have to do is take good notes, study before tests, and the class is awesome! I highly recommend!
Wilson is a great teacher! He breaks the material down so the average person can understand. It is a hard class, have to work for a good grade. He is very generous with extra credit and very helpful. Book is useful in order to really understand material taught in class. I highly recommend him and wish I could take other classes from him!
Mr. Wilson is a good Biology teacher. You need to attend class regularly because he outlines his lectures with the notes that you need to study for the tests. The tests are not easy, but if you study well, you should do OK. Most of the labs were interesting learning experiences. Mr. Wilson's classes are well-organized; he's strict in a nice way.
Great teacher! Attendance isn't mandatory but he covers EVERYTHING you need to know for a test in his lectures. Difficult but very fair. Show up, take notes and study and you will do well.
He is so kind. He tries to act serious but he has a heart of gold. However, that does not mean you can glide by with an easy A. His tests have detail. So study. Good new is that his tests are word-for word from the notes he gives you. He's clear and concise. Write down all the notes, study before tests, and you will be just fine.
A very straight forward and intelligent instructor with a heart of gold. He communicates not only his requirements clearly, but also relates all the information in the class back to understandable concepts. He gives 4 graded tests a quarter and that's your grade. Always attend the lab, as there are test questions from it. Wonderful class.
Horrible teacher. You hv 30points extra credit if you don't break any of his rules in class. However, you won't know if you have those points, he wont let you know it either. He writes down what happended in class after each class. You can not ask him about your grade because He hates people bugging him about their grade. All he cares abt is himself
Dr. Wilson is genuine w/ a great heart. The class is difficult for visual learners because he doesn't like technology and uses an old projector for illustrations. I found it necessary to supplement the course with a lot of videos from other instructors on YouTube. It was a tough class, but he gives 10% extra credit if you're not late or use a cell.
Lots of information in this course but the teacher tells you what you need to know. There is no mystery about what your grade is. There are four tests and he drops the lowest score plus he gives 30 points extra if you don't come late to class or use cell.
Dr. Wilson was a cool teacher. Everything that he puts on the tests is in his notes or labs. His tests are hard but if you study you'll do fine. He is very helpful and will answer your questions and even includes a day before the test for questions on material. He does not allow electronics like laptops or recorders so take notes by hand.
He was a good teacher. Extremely smart which was hard to follow sometimes, note taking was lengthy. But I felt he really cared for his students.
He is really helpful. The test are based on the notes and reading, however he can go off on rants during lectures, and he uses an old school over head projector so it can be hard to read his hand writing. He drops lowest test, so if you do well, you don't need to show up for the final.
This class was extremely hard, Wilson is very smart and knows what he is talking about but gives no help. You aren't given study guides for tests and are on your own when trying to figure out what to study. This class is very frustrating because the only way to get points is from the tests, no outside work, and labs don't count for anything.
I thought Prof. Wilson was a great teacher. He treated everyone like adults. If you put in the effort, you will do well. His lectures are clear; exams are relevant to what we learned in classlab. Students skipped labslecture because attendance isn't mandatory - they often complained about receiving poor grades...
Amazing teacher. Everything relevant to tests is in his Notes or Lab. Take care to read book before relevant lecture. Pay attention, and take notes during class. Use notes as study guide. Participate in lab, and pay attention. It will be part of the exams. Gives Extra Credit for all who are respectful and do not disrupt class. Recommend Go to Class
This class was very tough and lectures were so long. If you skip one day you better find somebody for notes because you take about 5 pages of notes per day and you need them to study. There is no homework but your entire grade is based on 4 tests. He knows what he is talking about but he goes way too fast and it is hard to soak up the information.
Do not skip lectures or labs. Notes are taken in both, and you are graded on both. Reading can be extensive, but it is background to the lecture material. Tests will heavily depend on lecture notes. This is a 1 hour in, 3 hours out of study time. Or even 4. Extra credit is possible. This is a fair, but tough teacher. I enjoyed the class.
Wilson is a great professor! There is no homework. If you want to pass, show up and write down the notes he gives you; most importantly STUDY! His notes are very clear and specific. You have 3 mandatory exams in order to pass the class. Final Exam is optional. Your three highest scoring exams determine your grade. This class was my favorite!
Its biology so it requires attention to detail and a lot of memorization. Hes great at explaining and is extremely helpful. You don't have homework, pop quizzes, just reading from the text and notes to study. He's passionate about his work and is great and teaching you the information you need to know to apply to future work and classes.
Wilson is a great professor, but expects a lot. He makes you work hard for your grade, so don't skip lectures OR labs. You will be tested on everything. He expects a lot of memorization so you'll want to become best friends with your notes. His tests are fair but can be very specific on what he covered. Study tip: Summarize and summarize notes.
He is smart and cares about students learning. Doesn't put up with any crap. Took me 2 trys to pass his class and figure him out. Go to every lab and lecture and spend time studying it. Tests are the only thing graded but they are based mostly on his lecture so take good notes. I hated him the first time but liked him the second time.
He lectures are very good, but you better keep up and write EVERYTHING down. Hi is very clear about grades and tests. No homework except reading your notes. over all for Bio 160 he is asking little too much. If you miss the class make sure to get notes from someone. Lab is not mandatory but he does adds questions from the lab on the tests.
I really enjoyed taking this class. He really cares if you show interest in the material. I wish all teachers could be as dynamic. He expects a lot certainly, but since the only thing he grades are tests, it is clear where your time should be spent.
Professionally, He puts in the minimal effort and it shows. I genuinely do not feel like I got my monies worth, even for CC tuition. Personally, I don't enjoy negative people, so he wasn't for me.
Well organized lectures. He makes it clear what to study for tests based on your notes. He is always very prepared and asks if you understand. He gives good examples in explanations. Labs are fun and self paced. There is no busy work. He is funny without making it too obvious
Uses an overhead projector to write down much of what you need to know. Covers a LOT of info ea. lecture. No homework, only tests, but gives massive extra credit! Tests are hard; mostly because of way he phrases questions. It's difficult to understand what it is he is actually asking for, but also includes details from lectures so take good notes!!
Old school. Be prepared to take ALOT of notes. No homework, only tests and no extra cred. The tests are hard and worded oddly. Grade based entirely off of 3 tests. If you're good at bio this is the perfect class for you but if not and need a more hands on learning approach take someone else
I took his class 1 year ago. The tests aren't particularly hard. HERE'S THE PROBLEM: he gives you a 10% boost to your grade IF you don't use your phone and it doesn't go off. I didn't study at all and was all set to get an 83% out of the class (or a 93% with the boost). Anyway, my phone accidentally went off and I wound up with a 2.8. I hate him.
Course covers a lot of interesting subjects. Labs are well matched with lectures and are self paced. No busy work. Tests cover everything in lectures and labs. You have to be there to take notes but attendance s not actually required.
I loved him . This class was super easy for me all you had to do was do well on 3/4 tests and come to class. He was funny and nice. good times
All of the labs match up with the lectures really nicely, and he is just passionate about teaching to people who want to learn.
Dr. Wilson gives amazing lectures- take good notes and you will ace the class. Lots of one on one time in labs, too. He knows a lot and is willing to share it with those that show dedication to the subject. His microscope observation skills are amazing, and hell teach you how to really see a specimen if you let him.
Awesome teacher! Take notes when he writes things down and you will do great. You dont really need to textbook, just flash card his notes and relisten the lectures and you will do great!
Old school. Only grades 3 tests. Does not tech the bigger picture and only spews out random factoids that you have to remember. Spent hours after school every day studying how the systems work and my best grade on a test was an 80%. Passed with a 2.8 whereas my prior biology classes I received a 3.7. Miserable class. Only prof who offers it tho..
Dynamic lectures. Lots of science history. He covers many interesting topics in depth and writes what you need to know in a well organized way provides broad overview and lots of details. Very patient and courteous. Tests cover EVERYTHING.
He gave 4 test and that's what your grade was based off. Lectures had lots of information that was overwhelming that he expected you to know and remember. Didn't work with students at all when it came to test dates. Biggest thing was all the information that one needed to know to be successful on the test. Test are long and can be very confusing.
The lectures are easy to follow. Labs are fun and no pressure. attendance is not required but you need notes. Lots of extra credit. Lowest test score is dropped.
Hes a really good professor. He really wants you to pass but his class is really difficult. The lectures are really long and the tests are really hard. Main thing is STUDY STUDY STUDY!! If you skip his class or dont study, easy fail. If you arent good at tests or have bad test anxiety (me) you wont do very well. He words his tests so weird!!
This was by far the hardest class I have ever taken. Al is a very nice and helpful professor, but he does 2 HOUR lectures and the tests are super hard. I am a bad test taker so I struggled. You only have 4 tests (he will throw away your lowest score) and some extra credit opportunities. I would suggest studying every night, at least 2 hours.
This class is based on three exams, gives some extra credit, but not a crazy amount. If you arent good with testing I recommend finding another professor. Lectures are two hours and the exams are difficult to understand. He doesnt really teach you the material, he just tells you facts and stories about it
A great instructor and course. Strictly college level material and delivery. Lectures are one hour and packed with info. He basically writes down everything you need to know for the exams. Exams are multiple choice and pretty straightforward if you study. Lots of high school students in the class.
Amazing professor and class! No busy work, interesting lectures, and fun labs. The class is test heavy but he provides great notes and plenty of extra credit. Show up to lectures and study everyday and you'll do great.
Dr. Wilson is incredibly knowledgeable. His lectures are helpful and loaded with information. The labs are very enjoyable. If you do well on exams, absolutely take this class! I happen to be a mediocre/terrible test taker, so I absolutely bombed a couple of tests. Still, Dr. Wilson gives you plenty of extra credit opportunities. I learned so much!
Go to class, take good notes and study. Ask questions if you don't understand anything, he's extremely helpful and very knowledgeable!
He is very old school, which didn't really benefit me that much. He grades three test and the only study guide is your notes, and it can be hard to keep up with the class. On top of that he does not have the best handwriting, and he is very difficult to communicate with outside of class. If you're not a good test taker I would not recommend him.
Great class. He is extremely helpful and good at explaining. Very patient with immature students. Labs are fun and interesting. Grade based on tests that are pretty simple if you study. I blew one but he drops the lowest.
You are really close to being on your own in this class, he will bring something up once and expect you to remember it. Trying to gauge what is even going to be on the test is its own nightmare, it will be small random bits of information he covered briefly in passing. And your grade relies solely on your exams.
Professor Wilson was a very knowledgeable teacher. His lectures were so interesting! This class is not easy by any means, but if you come to class every day and use your notes while studying, it makes the tests so much easier. If you have any questions on the material, he will answer them for you.
This has been my favorite class so far. At first he seems scary by how much responsibility he places on you, but it's not that bad once you get used to it. If you skip class, you won't pass, and don't be late either. After every lecture and lab I made flashcards online and 100% if I didn't, I wouldn't have passed. Al is very nice if you know him.
Had a lot of fun in this class! Wilson is passionate about the subject and very old school. He seems scary but I promise he really isn't when you talk to him. Only write down whatever he writes down, I guarantee that will be on the test. Come five minutes early to class, go to all of the Lab Q+A sessions, and do not let him see or hear your phone.
Professor Wilson is awesome! Truly cares about students understanding material and will explain/reexplain anything if you ask. Don't be late or on electronics, write down what he says to, and study. By studying notes and watching YT videos you could get by w/o textbook. 4 100pt exams, lowest score dropped + 30pt EC if on time/behaved well = grade.
Professor Wilson's BIO160 class is challenging but engaging. Attend lectures, study diligently, and utilize resources like the textbook and unstuck study to excel. Exams are tough, but the professor is helpful if you put in the work.
Prof. Wilson is awesome! No homework for this class and labs aren't graded, so you can just enjoy learning hands on. The class is still challenging because your grade rides on four tests, but if you take good notes and do study groups you'll do great. Flashcards are your friends lol. Honestly one of the most fun classes I've taken at SFCC!
His syllabus makes him seem pretty strict, but he's actually very sweet. One thing to note: You definitely have to study!! I've always gotten easy A's with no studying but got a wake up call with my 54% on the first test. Do your best to be there each day (lab too!) and don't stress about the extra 30 points, he gives them out to everyone.
In my second time taking Al's class. You NEED to study to be able to pass. Grades are only based on 3/4 tests, lowest test score gets dropped if you take all 4. Make flashcards, you will need to do something. Write down everything for lectures and pay attention. He's willing to answer any extra questions about a topic and labs are very fun!
