I find Garland helpful and accommodating in terms of instruction in the midst of a pandemic. Definitely rely on GRQs and read the book if you can, for they'll be helpful for her exams.
She has been the most accomodating professor throughout this pandemic. Exams count for a lot of your grade but they're based completely on lectures. Asynchronous but lots of office hours/peer review. At the end of the exams she asks if any questions were unclear and takes responsibility for those that are. Lovely prof, hope to have her again!
Garland has been super accommodating with the pandemic, started dropping some homework grades, pushes things back if needed, etc. Definitely hard tests, but as long as you really work for it you can still do well. Her review sessions were definitely helpful and she gave lots of opportunities to talk in groups, even though the class is asynchronous!
Dr. Garland has been super caring, accommodating, and helpful! She provides so many resources for you, and the tests are not tricky or unfair. The class is pretty structured but that has been really helpful in online classes. Not sure why her rating is so low-- I would highly recommend :)
She's super nice and accommodating with online learning.
Dr. Garland is the best!! Super caring and understanding especially with everything going on right now!! All of her exams are pretty straightforward and focus almost completely on her lectures.
Professor Garland was very understanding and accomodating provided the circumstances of the pandemic. Lectures were asynchronous for added flexibility. She also provides plenty of opportunities to ask for help/ feedback.
Garland is AMAZING. Yes, her exams can be difficult due to the wording but if you study hard, really understand the material, and carefully read the questions, you'll be good. She also has lots of review material. Lastly, Garland was SUPER understanding during the pandemic. One of the best bio professors at this school for sure
Dr. Garland has been the most understanding and flexible professor I have had during the pandemic. The class is asynchronous but there is still a good amount of structure to stay on track. The tests can have some tricky wording but careful reading and paying attention to the lecture material definitely helps.
(taken online)Dr. Garland was amazing! Where a lot of teachers were unaccommodating, Dr. Garland was super caring. This is not an easy class, there is a lot of hard content but Dr. Garland does a good job of explaining things and providing helpful resources. She's also understood available outside of class and understanding when students have probs
Professor Garland is the BEST teacher I have had in my entire UNC experience. With all that is going on, she has been more than flexible and genuinely cares about her students. As long as you watch her lectures and do the practice exams and readings you are practically set to succeed. Professor Garland is THE BEST and you are lucky if u have her.
TAKE PROFESSOR GARLAND. thats it. thats simply it. professor garland is the best and I mean best professor at UNC and you would be more than set to succeed if you had her. Obviously this is not an easy A class but if you put in the work and do everything she says you are set to succeed. TAKE her. you wont regret it. i promise.
I adore Dr. Garland! I'm not sure why her reviews aren't very good. In the midst of COVID and online classes, Dr. Garland was my most accommodating professor and so sweet and helpful during office hours. She truly cares about her students and wants them to succeed.
Although I sadly did not have much direct interaction with her b/c online classes, Dr. Garland is a great professor. She is very good at explaining the material and always makes it interactive. She is also understanding and kind.
Dr. Garland is one of the best professors I have ever had. She can explain complicated material in an easy to understand way. All of our tests (including the final) were open book open note. If you are a hard worker, there is no doubt you will succeed in her class. I would recommend Dr. Garland to anyone that had to take BIOL101!
Dr. Garland was hands down the best biology professor I have had at UNC thus far. She has been so accommodating and kind due to COVID and all the other craziness in the world right now. The tests are super duper specific, which was my downfall. Overall great and interesting class with an awesome prof!
Dr. Garland is the best professor I've had this semester at UNC! She is so caring and accommodating (especially with online classes). The tests can be a but tricky but are totally doable if you test yourself on the material. She has really made me love UNC stem.
I don't understand why Dr. Garland gets bad reviews. She has been by far the most accommodating professor during COVID. She's letting us replace our lowest midterm with the final, deleted confusing test questions, and is giving us many extra credit. She is very nice and approachable during open office hours, and she provides plenty of resources.
Truly the best professor I've had at UNC. Her test may be a little hard, but if you study they are not terrible. She actually cares about her students which makes a big difference.
Dr. Garland was incredibly caring and lenient regarding everything being online and the difficulties students might have. Her lectures were very clear and made a lot of sense, There is a lot of homework, but thats very helpful as you get a lot of practice. The tests are hard tho, and you really need to read each question carefully.
I wish every professor at UNC were just like Professor Garland. Take her. You will love her.
Dr. Garland has been my favorite professor so far during my time at UNC. Her class was so interesting and even though it was online, she provided ample resources for us. Her tests were difficult but if you rewatch her lectures you will likely be successful!!!
Dr. Garland is an AMAZING professor. I can't say enough good things about her. She is so accommodating and understanding. She treats her students with so much care, she really understands the class is difficult but does a great job providing resources and feedback. I wish more professors were like her.
exams are realllllly hard so dont expect As on every exam
Dr. Garland is an amazing professor. Most people that rate her bad are just freshman who aren't prepared for stem. If you want to do good in her class, use the GRQ's for the basics, but her lectures are most important. I wrote down everything she said in lectures and easily aced her tests. She was so nice and accommodating during the pandemic.
I thought Professor Garland was literally an 'okay' professor. Her lectures aligned pretty well to what we saw on exams, but the exams were difficult sometimes because she often had questions that were poorly worded/confusing. Prof. Garland was very accommodating for the semester, however, being that it's been a rough time for everyone.
Best STEM professor I've had at UNC.
This class was harder than I expected, but if there's anyone to take during online school its her. Dr. Garland was SO accommodating throughout the semester and genuinely wanted our feedback to make the most of the semester. A really great professor during this time
I had her for 101 last fall and didnt really like her class. I just finished 202 with her and SHE HAS IMPROVED SO MUCH since last fall! Shes a lot nicer in office hours, genuinely cares about all of her students, and always ask for feedback to improve and accommodate for her students. Her teaching techniques also improved a lot. 10/10 recommend!
Garland has been my favourite prof at UNC so far; definitely the best lecturer. Took 101 in person last year & she was amazing at making classes interesting and took time to explain tricky materials. In 202 online this semester, she is the same and super caring and accommodating. Tough exams but def can do well on them if you study. Recommend!!
SOO CONFUSED by these ratings. Do not be fooled. One word to describe Dr. Garland: elite. She is one of the most interesting and accommodating professors. Actually cares for the success of her students which can't be said for any other UNC STEM prof. I don't love biology but even so her lectures are super interesting and delivered at a great pace.
Dr. Garland is one of the best bio professors here. Her lectures are extremely clear and the exams mimic her lecture examples EXACTLY and her practice exams prepare you well. You definitely have to study hard to get an A but Dr. Garland provides a ton of resources to help. DO THE GRQS- most of the details are found within them
Dr. Garland is an amazing person. During COVID, she was so understanding and it felt like she truly cared for our mental health. Her class is pretty easy going but the exams are difficult. If you put in a lot of work, I'm sure you'll get a good grade but don't think the class is easy just because she's a sweet person.
She explains things well over lectures and is super understanding and flexible regarding the pandemic. Exams are tough but doing well on the GRQs/MB/LC can help your grade so much. Completely asynch but lots of opportunities for small group collabs and peer tutoring. HW is twice a week and completely manageable.
Dr. Garland is a QUEEN. She was the most caring and accomodating prof I had this semester by far and deserves a 5/5 rating. Her lectures are informative and tests are tricky but completely doable if you follow the lectures. I loved this class with her and learned so much even though it was asynchronous. If you're reading this Dr. Garland ILY!!
Professor Garland is wonderful! She was very accommodating to student's concerns this semester shown through her extending assignment deadlines and allowing us to replace our lowest midterm with our final exam grade. Her lectures are super helpful, so I rarely read the textbook. Exams had weird wording sometimes but were totally doable and fair!
Garland was super nice and lectures (pre-recorded) were kept as short as possible . LOTS of work, but its Bio so that's expected. I got a D on the first exam (the whole semester has 4 exams including midterm and final), but the lowest exam grade was dropped. As long as you actively study and meet due dates you should do fine
I honestly don't know why Dr. Garland has such a low rating. She goes above and beyond for her students and is very passionate about biology. Yes, the tests are on the more difficult side, but she is an amazing professor and you can tell she wants her students to succeed. Definitely taking her class again!
Dr. Garland was one of the best professors I had at UNC. She was so understanding of everyone's circumstances (COVID) and she really gave us so many opportunities to help our grade. I have never had a professor so understanding. The exams were very lecture heavy, so if you really learned those lectures and sample questions you were set for the exam
The most accommodating and kind prof at UNC. Alaina provided so many resources and materials so students could succeed. Tests were very fair, recitation was easy and no work, homework/reading was a lot but very helpful. Overall Garland is the best STEM prof I've had.
Dr. Garland is amazing. Tests are not bad at all as long as you are familiar with the lecture. Theres a lot of reading but honestly you rly dont need to do them as long as you focus on the lecture and make sure you understand the concepts and how they connect to each other. Its really easy to miss deadlines cuz theyre kinda all over the place.
I found that Dr Garland's lectures no where near matched the complexity of the exam questions. The class is primarily teaching yourself. She glosses over the topics at a high school level, yet gives questions at a grad level. The class was asynchronous and very large so I never interacted with her. You will have to work hard for an a in here.
Professor Garland is an amazing professor! Clear, interesting lectures. 75% of grade is made up by exams. Not too difficult, just very detailed oriented and very good about only testing what was lectured on. I studied by just using GRQs, taking lecture notes, and after each lesson creating a synthesized study guide, cuts down study time! Take her!!
Dr. Garland knows her material well, and expects you to put in a good bit of effort for you to get a deserving grade. The assignments are all geared towards your success. It is in your best interest to do every assigned work and listen to every single lecture, because it can be a tough class. Everything is fair game to trip you up easily.
Garland is a great professor for gen bio, she's very understanding and really cares about your learning and you as a student. You do have to put in the work to understand the material. Do the GRQs and understand her powerpoint slides, they are extremely helpful. Do lots of practice problems, ask questions and put in the effort if you want an A.
Garland is a great professor. I do think that her exams can be tricky, but that's UNC. Focus on the lectures and you'll do fine. Also, don't slack off. You want to come to class with a basic foundation of the material in order to participate with in-class questions. However when things were online, I didn't need to prepare beforehand which was easy
Dr. Garland was extremely accommodating to online learning and really cared about her students. Online tests and quizzes were open note and open book. Lots of outside review sessions were offered.
Dr. Garland has been the nicest professor this semester. Shes so sweet and is approachable. I went to her office hours and she was so nice and helpful. Her lectures are also super easy to follow and definitely taught us everything for exams. Shes made many adjustments to help her students even with a class size over 200 students. 10/10 recommend
Dr. Garland is hands down the best professor Ive had at UNC. Shes so caring and very accommodating during Covid times. Her exams are tricky and makes you apply your knowledge, but she cares so much and truly wants you to succeed. Ive already signed up for BIO 205 with her! If given the chance, take her class!!!
Professor Garland was one of my favorite professors I have had at UNC. She was so caring and empathetic during these difficult times with COVID and was extremely flexible with our workload. She was always willing to listen to students' concerns and did whatever she could to make the semester easier on us. Highly recommend her!
I'm so glad I didn't let some of the other reviews scare me- her class was my absolute favorite, and she made difficult content a lot easier to understand. I had her in my first semester of freshman year and it definitely wasn't too much to handle. She was also super understanding with the pandemic and made things less stressful
I honestly don't understand her low rating on here. Bio 101 can be tough subject matter for some people, but the lectures are pretty good and she tells you how to study for tests. She held optional review sessions each week with practice questions that were extremely helpful. If you take advantage of all the resources she gives you you can succeed.
Dr. Garland was accommodating and changed many things for the benefit of students. All of the tests are weighted the same, even the final. The course was asynchronous which made it difficult to focus and get to know her. Her tests can be tricky and it is important that you read each question carefully.
Dr. Garland is amazing! Can't wait for 205 with her.
Dr. Garland is caring and considerate of students. Lectures, guided notes, homework, and other work help create a good understanding of the material. Tests can be difficult and focus on applying the learned concepts. The grade was dependent on tests, which take a bit of studying to prepare for (which I did not do).
Dr. Garland was super understanding about the online environment. The class was async. when I took it and it was super manageable for me. Her tests are very representative of her lectures, no surprise questions. Easy participation is 20% (if i rmbr correctly) of the final grade which is great. Only complaint is shes not the best at responding email
I found Dr. Garland so nice and helpful. It just so happens that she teaches hard classes so she may get a lower rating than she deserves. In my opinion, a hard class is not the same as a bad professor. Id rather learn than get an easy A, which is what you will get from Dr. Garland.
Alaina Garland does NOT deserve a 2.8 on here. She is the kindest, most adaptable prof in the biology dept, and she has been amazing during the pandemic. She changes exams when we complain, adds things when we ask, etc. I took 202 with her and I'm in 205 with her now. She is the best, please don't let the numbers scare you.
A favorite professor, as a person. More effort is taken on exams trying to understand what the question is. In the last weeks class structure had an unexpected change, no one could control but the drop class quality was not acknowledged on the exam, it showed. Exams arent consistent with material presentation one or both need major alterations.
Teaches material well, makes it not overwhelming. Exams can be pretty brutal. She'll hit you with a click all that apply question and then not give partial credit, so if you misclick youre toast. Gets scarier when you realize exams are 75% of your grade, so on a 25 question exam each question wrong is a point off your grade. You'll survive tho.
Avoid 449 with her if you can! Crazy amounts of reading, super disorganized class structure, and terrible test questions. Even studying for days and going to office hours doesn't help. She repeats a lot of material, but somehow is bad at writing test questions for all of them. Following her own tips doesn't help either. Not worth the hassle, AVOID!
I had Dr. Garland for 202 (online) and now 205 (online). She's an amazing professor who cares a lot about her students! She's very accommodating, patient, always open to feedback, and actually listens to her student. Exams are mostly on lectures and she explains things very well. Hard class but that's expected for all bio classes.
There is a gap between the class work and assessment expectations. It is evident in conversations amongst students when very few can make sense of rationale regarding answers to missed questions. A phenomenal educator and lecturer but tests fall short. Would recommend another professor write exams but Dr. Garland maintain current lecture approach.
I love Dr. Garland and have taken her classes before and found them super easy but Immunology is just different. The test questions are difficult and it is hard to do well in the course.
I loved Dr. Garland for 202 and 205! Some of her lectures could be a little chaotic, but she was excellent at explaining concepts (especially during office hours/Q&A sessions). She was EXTREMELY accommodating during the pandemic, dropped lowest quiz grades, would drop exam questions that majority missed, etc. Exams were logic/application based.
Dr. Garland was nice and accommodating toward students, but lecture slides are very disorganized and hard to follow at times. Test Q's are very nuanced and she intentionally tries to trick students with wording of the Q's. Nevertheless, this class requires a lot of studying and reading, but I would recommend another professor.
Not accounting there is a pandemic when it comes down to it but mentions it in emails after grades. Her tests are convoluted and the wording leaves interpretation she is not willing to listen to. Her rigid grading and obscure wording effect GPAs & careers long term- but she wont acknowledge that. She is kind & wish she gave understanding we need.
205 is an overall interesting course but I thought it was really tough. However, Dr. Garland was pretty understanding and she's a good person. She provides extra credit and grades fairly. My only complaint is that her lectures were very disorganized, so it was hard to stay on track. Pay attention to details, take good notes, and don't fall behind!
Tests are 84% of your grade with no drops or grade switches with the final. Pages of GRQs that are simple recall from the reading. The textbook sucks, very dense and doesn't explain well. My Orgo textbook was better. Alaina is a very nice person but terrible test maker. She's obsessed with select all/TF questions and loves overly tricky questions.
This was my 3rd class with Garland, so by now I've gotten used to her testing. That being said, the final was still so difficult it pulled my grade down to a B+. I learn a lot in her courses and don't regret taking them, but they do put a dent in my GPA. Overall a solid choice and get ready to put in work - it's a bio class. Go to her office hours!
I think Dr. Garland overall is a really understanding professor and helped me pass the class. But I think the grading system is really harsh since there's no homework or busy work, just exams and quizzes. On that note, she did drop like 4 of the lowest quizzes (out of 10) and was a nice person. Hard class though, but interesting material.
Dr. Garland is a very understanding professor who actually cares about her students. She will often remove overly difficult or poorly-worded questions from exams, which are overall are moderately difficult. Lectures themselves are very interesting as she includes visuals, hypothetical scenarios, and real-life applications. Recommend!
Professor Garland is a nice lady, however, she races through material and doesn't do a good job of explaining specific ideas. The exams she makes are much more difficult than the exam prep questions that she covers in class. If she's your professor I suggest finding other learning resources outside of class.
Don't have to attend class because of option to Zoom (for mental health, COVID, she said any reason we needed to Zoom was okay). She doesn't take attendance, but rather checks based on if you do Learning Catalytics during class (online questions). Absolutely cares about her student and is doing everything she can. Open note open internet exams.
Dr. Garland's lectures are very engaging and interesting, but when it comes to exams, her expectations of the course seem to be exponentially higher than she expresses when teaching. Her lectures are mostly review, but the exams are EXTREMELY DIFFICULT and require a lot of out-of-class self-teaching and independent learning. Get ready to work hard!
Dr. Garland is very thoughtful about the student experience and genuinely wants all students to learn the content with minimal stress and succeed with high marks. That being said, nothing is going to be given to you in this class, you have to put in the work, but that's easy because lots of feedback is provided and help is readily available!
The class was hard at first, but the TA's are extremely helpful. Doctor Garland does not have many office hours for one on one, but the TA's are how I survived in this class. Show up to the extra office hours and take the practice exams! The exams are worth 18% each, but they will work with you to improve scores. Solid class
Note: Garland doesn't "teach"... the class has different lecturers each week all from different healthcare professions. Every week there is a required pre and post class assignment due before/after class that maybe takes 15 minutes each to complete (if even). It's a pass/fail course and an easy 1 credit hr class!
Garland is very smart/caring, but her exams are VERY HARD. I studied more than I ever have & still did badly. She grazes over the lecture's main ideas, but the exams are application-based. SM hw yet that's not accurately represented in final grade. Flipped classroom so if you teach yourself wrong you're screwed. I've never felt so stupid.
Aliana is a good person & biologist, but she's a horrible teacher. Everything you learn is out of a textbook and u have to teach yourself, in class she does short lecture summaries of the unit. Test are often very complex and based on applying practical knowledge to real-situations. Homework heavy, but barley helps grade. Don't take unless pre-med
Dr. Garland is an incredibly caring person and good biologist, but I swear to god she does not teach what's going to be on the exam. If you do not read the textbook and put in countless hours of self-teaching, you are NOT going to do well on the exams. It seems as Dr. Garland expects much more of her students during exams than she does during class
Alaina Garland is a super nice professor. The class itself is and can be very challenging, but I feel like reviewing specific things makes it managable. She is a very understanding professor and does things to make it nicer for her students such as dropping the lowest test score, taking hard test questions out, giving extra credit etc.
Garland is a very nice lady but her teaching style is all over the place. She purposefully tries to trick you on exams. I had to do a lot of self teaching. Shes planning on giving us a test replacement which Im thankful for. Nice lady but dont expect to learn a ton. Interesting subject though if you take initiative to research yourself.
Dr. Garland is a wonderful teacher! Her energy is very sweet and caring, and you can tell she enjoys what she teaches and wants the best for her students. While the class itself is pretty difficult, she makes it more tolerable.
You can tell Dr. Garland cares about what she teaches, however, she barely teaches. You entirely teach yourself through a textbook and then she glosses over the material during class. Homework and quizzes are easy but the exams are extremely difficult. Luckily she drops your lowest exam grade and a decent amount of homework/quizzes.
BIOL 101 is not a difficult class in terms of complexity (it is a survey class), but there is a lot of hoemwork (chapter of textbook reading, 2-5 page long GRQs, 20-40 question reading quizzes). Lectures were basically a repeat of the textbook readings. Very thoughtful in terms of mental health and dropped many grades.
Very easy grading if you're good at tests. Allows for some second chances. Fair grading. Explains answers. Sometimes extra credit is provided.
Her lectures are really boring. Tried to ask her about something once and she was really rude to me for no reason. She says this isnt a weed-out class, but she acts like it is. Imo wasnt terribly difficult content wise, just study before the exams (lowest is dropped!)
Dr. Garland was a really great teacher. She encouraged participation through learning catalytics, but it was participation (not for a grade) and you could attend class online. Her tests are kind of annoying, she tries to trip you up with what she insists aren't trick questions, but she replaces your lowest midterm with your final so it works out.
Dr. Garland is a good biologist and it is obvious she knows her stuff, but I wouldn't say she's great at teaching. Lecture consists of "talk to your neighbor" exercises that are not very helpful, just seem to waste instruction time. She may swear she's not tricking you but beware! Expect to teach yourself the material. Best of luck!
Professor Garland was by far my hardest professor in college. Going to lectures are somewhat pointless because instead of reviewing material we only go through learning catalytics. Tests are NOT material covered in GRQ's or class; you literally have to teach yourself.
If you arent good at self-teaching you will struggle. Homework takes a lot of time and is not representative of how difficult the tests are. She wastes a lot of class time going over things that can be found in the syllabus. She also wastes time having us discuss with out neighbors instead of just teaching so lectures are a waste of time.
A very nice person, but not the best lecturer and her exams are often full of mistakes and errors. Dr Garland was very accommodating during COVID by making the class hybrid; however, I think that she could focus more on course material and less on making sure her students feel comfortable
Everything was good until the exams. I dont think anyone could prepare for the midterms since we barely had any practice with application based questions. Shes very understanding but did not prepare us for the exams at all.
If you read the textbook and fully understand what is going on, you'll be fine. Exams areapplication-based questions, but if you make a doc of all the Learning Objectives, you will succeed! Also highly recommend bio cell.
BIOL 101 is a tough class with any professor at UNC but Dr. Garland made this course a lot easier. She is very caring (dropped a lot of assignments, a lesson, offered extra credit a few times) and you can tell she wants to see her students do well. If you go to Biocell, do all the practice questions in class, and take good notes, you will be fine.
Garland is a good choice for biol101. The class setting is standard for whoever you have. Make sure to prepare for tests well by rereading powerpoints and reviewing practice exams. Seek help when needed.
Professor Garland is pretty nice when it comes to grading, but her tests are application-based questions which make the tests pretty hard. Her teaching style isn't the best, as it is sort of passive, but go to office hours and peer mentor sessions and you should be fine.
Dr. Garland is definitely a good lecturer and professor, but the exams are difficult and all application-based, so you have to understand the content really well. The online option is great too but a good incentive to sleep through class.
Dr. Garland is caring and provides extra credit opportunities, however, her test are extremely challenging and her lectures are so fast that its hard to take notes. Given that the test are worth 54% of your grade, having extra credit may or may not have an affect on your grade. Its passable but you really have to put in the WORK!
Garland was a great professor. Even if you struggle with exams somewhat, you'll probably score a C+ - B+ if you attend class, do well on the homework, and quizzes. The exams were a little hard, but if you do the practice problems that were given in class, you should be able to understand the format of the exams.
Dr. Garland is very considerate of her students' experiences, and is very clear about class format up front. She also shares lessons from her career journey which I found to be really encouraging. The GRQs are more helpful in the beginning than the end, but really practice for the exams since open-note exams tend to have confusing wording.
Dr. Garland is very accommodating and provides students with many resources. Lectures are sometimes tricky to follow but powerpoints are posted after. Expect to study a lot and take advantage of practice questions. Tests questions can be tricky.
There's a lot of material, but her midterms are fair. The lecture slides are the most helpful for studying (textbook can be too dense, I think she was good at including things that were directly mentioned in lecture). She tends to drop a couple questions. There is Mastering, Peerwise, & recitation to help your grade. Takes some work, but doable!
Dr. Garland is accommodating, as she provides a multitude resources, gives extra credit, and drops several graded assignments. The homework does the teaching lectures only supplement and explore the material in more detail. Her exams are difficult, but if you study with the Learning Catalytics questions from the lecture, you will do well.
Garland was my most accommodating prof this semester. She dropped our lowest exam, and a good bit of homework/quizzes/participation because of COVID. The class requires work, but if you do it, go to lecture, and study the way she tells you, you will do just fine. There are tons of outside resources and she really wants her students to succeed.
Super nice lady. She gave back points are questions students had difficulty with often. Also, she dropped an exam and a bunch of assignments. You want her for Bio 101.
Dr. Garland's class was easily the most organized and well-structured class I took during my first semester of college. She had everything laid out clearly on Sakai and I always knew what to expect. She was also a good instructor and did a great job explaining the concepts in a way that was accessible and understandable. Solid choice.
The class itself is hard. I understand that, however the final exam was ridiculous. Way more hard than anything else in the class and not like anything we learned. The worst part was when I emailed her about it she copy and pasted a response back she has already sent out to the entire class. I couldnt believe it. Very unprofessional imo.
BIOL 101 was really hard, and I had to work really hard for my B in this class. That being said, Dr. Garland didn't make the class harder than it needed to be. Due to COVID and other events this semester, she dropped a lot of assignments and was overall super accommodating with grading. She really cares about her students!
Super nice and understanding, gave bunch of bonus credit opportunities and was accommodating when I fell sick. Tests are confusing, and you ought to read the material before coming to class. Practice is important. Had to really work hard for just a B, but this was my first STEM class at UNC so take this with a pinch of salt.
Dr. Garland's class was EXTREMELY challenging, as weed out classes usually are, but if you put in the work that was required, it wasn't horrible. She was usually pretty accessible, but due to the # of students she has she can miss an email here and there. Her class was structured so that students had a lot of support. 75% of your grade is exams.
I learned a lot in Professor Garland's class, but the material was tough. The exams were extremely difficult, no matter how hard you studied for them because they were application based. She was always conscious about adding back points if there were incorrect questions or if ones were too confusing.
Dr. Garland is super helpful during lectures and makes sure everyone understands the content. I did sign up for office hours and she didn't show but she was accessible over email, etc. She seems like she actually cares about students succeeding! 10/10 would take her again
Nice professor! Was very caring during the semester after traumatic events, also was very considerate and dropped our lowest midterm grade and a few other grades. Hard material, but there's a lot of resources that help you get through it! (Take advantage of the resources like BioCell, I regret not doing it sooner.)
She's obsessed with participation and you'll have to use like 7 different websites to do all the random assignments she assigns. As for exams, she'll deny it a million times but she's trying to trick you the whole time. If you read her slides you'll probably catch the tricks. The final was insane, dropped me a whole letter grade.
Bio 101 was honestly easy. It isn't a weed-out course. The tests are just a bit wacky on occasion, but the grading criteria is generous and a test was dropped.
This is definitely a flipped classroom. She expects you to come to class prepared to apply what you learned to questions, and I was frustrated by this often. Her tests are open note & internet, so they are very difficult. Be prepared to read a lot of the textbook & do lots of homework.
I came into the class thinking it would be difficult but it was actually must better than I expected. Her midterms made up a big percentage of your grade but they weren't too difficult if you knew the material. Reading the book is pretty much necessary but not too bad. She was also a sweet professor who taught well in lectures.
I will never be taking Dr. Garland's class again. I exerted countless hours to study for her exams, re- watching lecture videos, taking practice exams, and attending SI/PM sessions and could not pass her exams. She wants to trip us up on the exams, like she gets joy from it. Good luck taking her class. She made me dislike BIO.
The class is pretty test heavy, but there is a pretty common theme to Dr. Garland's exams. The biggest recommendation I have is to take your time reading questions, often one or two words of the question make the answers different. Dr. Garland is a great professor and gives fair exams!
Dr. Garland seems to be a nice person. However, I think she also tries to purposefully trip people up on exams to the point where it doesn't show knowledge of materials. She will have paragraph questions and one single word will be what makes everything else wrong. Information from this class is hard. BUT, I'm convinced she makes it a lot worse.
Dr. Garland is a nice PERSON, however, she is an evil test maker who tries to trick you by changing the whole question with one word. Don't make life harder for yourself, take this class with a different teacher. I really wish I had. Also, don't listen to the ratings giving her a 5, they are lying to you.
I would not recommend taking her for any class. She loves to write really tricky test questions and the material in her lectures isn't very organized.
I think taking Dr.Garland for the core bio requirements has ruined biology for me. The courses lack structure and the tests try to trick you with a single word. Will be. avoiding her classes the rest of my time at UNC
The class has a TON of content and she definitely did an exceptional job of covering it all. I will say the lectures were a bit too much information at times but there were definitely resources provides ways to keep up with the content. Watch out for deadlines! A missed quiz dropped my grade from an A- to a B+ so make sure to pay attention.
Dr. Garland really forces you to apply your knowledge on exams. Exams are very difficult (mainly Bc of wording). Many T/F and none of the above questions. Be prepared to do lots of practice problems and CREATE your own exam-like problems to prepare for exams. Her class teaches you how to be a better student and prepares you for your future.
Let's get one thing straight. After spending a while trying to understand Bloom's Taxonomy (spending time talking with other who know it very well and looking into it myself), Garland isn't very truthful about what type of questions she asks on exams. They're analysis based, not application based. Harder, meant for grad students, not second years.
Her wordings on the exams and on the slides are very poor, which makes the class even more confusing. Her exam questions are mostly about remembering the most trivial detail about each concept. Despite her poor wording, she still tries very hard to make sure trick questions in every single trivial way possible would appear on an exam.
Lots of readings every night and emphasis to do the GRQs, but she says not to use the textbook or GRQs to study for exams. Lectures do not align with the notes outline, and she won't send powerpoints before class. We are behind 4 lectures to what we're doing for homework, with an exam next week. Class organization is horrible.
Confusing questions on every single exam. Poor grammar made her questions even worse. Test on the most subtle details possible. Just avoid. Worst class every taken at UNC. Very disrespectful professor.
I love Dr. Garland as a person. There's not much else to say about her that hasn't already been said, but she is one of the better biology professors. Take her if you can/need to.
Dr. Garland's tests are hard for no reason. It genuinely feels like you are being tested on how to take a test/answer trick questions rather than being tested on the content of the class. She is a good lecturer, I just wish her exams reflected her lectures. GRQs have extra material and are a waste of time since exams are based on lectures.
Lectures are heavily application based. Her tests although hard at first, are very easy to adapt to, and your final exam replaces your lowest grade. The GRQs are useless though, I found that I did better when I didn't use them and instead only studied based on the LOs. Overall, not great, but she's nice enough as a prof and a solid choice for 202.
I love her so much! Exams can be difficult, but once you understand what she expects, you should be able to do well. She really helped me succeed by providing test strategies and expectations when asked. Great teacher as well.
Dr. Garland was a good professor but the structure of the course left little room for mistakes. Tests are worth most of the grade and concepts are presented in class as if you already know them. It's not hard but requires a lot of time and effort, which made it challenging for me as a) a not-great test taker and b) someone with little free time.
Dr. Garland is a good lecturer. With that being said, there is a lot of reading before class and you spend a lot of class time answering questions with your neighbor, who is probably just as confused as you are. 74% of your grade is exams that are carefully worded and application based. The class content can be difficult but it is doable.
Most of your learning will take outside of class before you even come to class. Lectures are more for practicing and solidifying understanding. She is big on applying the materials so the test questions may be a little different than you expect.
Garland's bio class was my first midterm here at UNC, and it was a slap in the face. This course is designed to really challenge you, so do not take studying for it lightly. So glad that you can drop your lowest midterm, as it allowed for me to get back on track after the first exam and finish w an A overall.
I loved Dr. Garland's teaching methods and Learning Catalytics based participation! I thought the content in this course was super interesting, there was lots of Mastering HW. I will say her test questions are pretty tricky at first and you have to learn how to navigate them. This was my first BIOL course, but I didn't think it was too tough!
Garlands a good professor, but her test were annoying. Lots of true false, none of the above, select all that applies. The final was harder than her midterms. Good teacher, but very annoying test writer.
Dr. Garland was a great professor to have for a first year science class. She clearly states expectations for the course. Her exams are difficult but if you do the practice exams and read the textbook you should be fine. Make sure to read the questions carefully.
Garland is an excellent lecturer, I found content very interesting yet also challenging. Exams were very tricky however and you have to be careful with her wording on questions. Overall, great class and very interesting content.
Easy Pass/Fail class hearing from different health professionals. Make sure to attend the necessary amount of lectures and complete the half hour/week assignments and you'll do well. As for learning, you really get out of this class what you put into it.
She was okay as a prof. Class time was talking a lot to peers who only had the same baseline knowledge as you (wasn't much help imo) Exams were fair. However, the final exam was not representative of class material or past exams- for me and several others my grade decreased from two letter grades (Ex: A --> B+).
Dr. Garland is a very good professor. She is very knowledgeable and definitely knows what she's talking about. Her tests are very hard and clearly meant to challenge you, though. I highly recommend going to her office hours. I did when I wanted more information on transitioning and the best ways to study for her exams, and it helped tremendously!
As someone who does not like biology, Dr. Garland introduced the material well. The tests are very difficult and are really the make or break in the class. Dr. Garland was always able to answer questions and meet to discuss study strategies. Take advantage of SI and PM sessions, they will help so much.
Go to lecture!! Readings/GRQs are important for this class for background information, but test material comes straight from lecture. She emphasizes practice problems when studying which I found very helpful. Her exams can be tricky, so make sure you read all questions very carefully.
Dr Garland is great and very kind however her tests are based on practice tests and lectures but tricks and minor changes in the wording that make you confused. Also her quizzes are the same difficulty as an exam and also make a good percentage of the grade and not to mention the final which was brutal. Try and take another professor if you can!
One of the hardest classes I have ever taken in my life, and I say this as someone who did really well in PHYS 114/115, along with calc 1 - 3 at my previous school. The exams are really hard, but at the end of the day it felt fair and will prepare me for the MCAT. Go to her office hours, she really wants to see you succeed. Would take again.
Garland's quiz/test questions that were poorly-worded. Her lectures felt rushed and often left me confused. Attending PM/SI sessions were my saving grace as trying to learn the material solely through lectures rarely helped. Be ready for lots of reading and learning on your own. If you need to take BIOL 103, I suggest another professor.
Alaina Garland seems to care and if you ask her for help she will do her best. On the other hand, bio 101 is very difficult and she makes her tests extremely hard. She sometimes words the test questions strangely and I feel like some of the content on the tests were things we did not learn and the homework takes up way too much time.
Dr. Garland does not lecture in favor of the exam. Her lectures often leave me more confused than before. She claims she makes her exams in alignment with the difficulty of the MCAT when most of her classes are not even pre-med. Seems like she wants to weed people out of the biology department with her ridiculous exam questions. Not impressed.
Quizzes and tests are worded horribly. Intentionally makes everything harder than it's need to be, lectures were not effective or interesting. Definitely would not recommend at all!
Overall just not a good professor, rewrites all of her tests and quizzes so they make zero sense. Other sections with different professors perform better and can actually understand the material. She seems nice but won't do anything to actually help you succeed in the class. Lectures are often not helpful or interesting. Do not recommend.
Not a terrible lecturer, but midterms are written to be very difficult and purposely trip students up in a high stress environment. Found that a lot of the homework that took multiple hours was not helpful to learn the material. Lectures seem disorganized, but that could be due to the new curriculum. Would take this class with a different professor
Class was on par with other STEM/BIO classes at UNC. Flipped classroom w/ GRQs/mastering/quizzes. Lectures were experiment/application based and you can use a cheat sheet on exams. Difficult exams but doable with practice questions and good studying. Put experiments/diagrams on cheat sheets!
Dr. Garland is kind and explains in detail what we learned in class. I found her lecture slides to be the most beneficial resource for studying for exams. There was one exam where the class did poorly, and she added an extra credit assignment to help with the low grades. She dropped one midterm, several quizzes, and a couple homework assignments.
Dr Garland is a very nice person, but the class is very hard. Tests are worded very weirdly and a lot of people don't do well on them. Luckily she drops one exam, several quizzes, and gives us extra credit opportunities. Lectures and exams are more about application so be prepared to know the content from the prework.
Dr. Garland is a very sweet person and cares a lot about the subject, but this class was woefully unorganized and unreasonably difficult to follow. It is certainly meant to weed students out. Tests are hard and tricky (though you get a front and back cheat sheet). Homework feels excessive and irrelevant to lessons. Take 103 with someone else.
Dr. Garland seems like a really sweet person, and she genuinely cared about the class material. However, the class was really disorganized, and we spent most of the semester behind and trying to catch up. She dropped several quizzes and GRQs because we never even got to the material in class. Take this class with someone else.
103 is an easy course, but Dr. Garland overcomplicates it and tries to trick you with wording on exams. She's also very inconsiderate and WILL NOT give extensions without a university excused absence. I submitted the final project 10 minutes late and she refused to accept it, dropping my final grade several points. Take anyone else for an easy A.
Dr. Garland overcomplicates concepts and is very disorganized. Cares more about tricking you on exams than testing knowledge. Guided readings and BIOL mastery assignments that take hours are due before class + 1 or 2 quizzes every week. Go with a different professor if possible.
Tries her hardest to overcomplicate simple concepts and make you slip up on exams because of one or two trick words. Coming from someone who did well in the class, she seems to genuinely want you to fail and does not care about her students. She appears nice on the surface, but will screw you over if she gets the chance.
The material in BIOL 103 is relatively easy. Coming from someone who got A's in ORGO 1/2 and did well in this class, she genuinely seems to want you to do poorly. It's not that the material is difficult to learn, she just goes out of her way to trip you up. Plays nice in class, but deep down doesn't care about her students.
Dr. Garland was very nice upfront, but honestly I think I know less about bio after taking this class. Tons of homework that won't prepare you for tests and quizzes, and she wasted time in most lectures talking about career opportunities when we were several lessons behind. I never knew what to study nor what the content was about.
Professor Garland was not it for Bio 103. She seemed sincere in class and really knew her stuff, but she did not do a good job teaching. The class was poorly structured as she expected us to fully know the content from GRQs that took hours to do. She then gave us very specific questions for quizzes and tests. Overwhelming and did not learn much.
Dr Garland really tries to be helpful. However, hours of tedious work daily on GRQS and Pearson questions (which never show up on tests) are big time sucks. Exams are filled with trick questions which are infuriating even when given notes sheets. Do not think I learned much in this course. Way harder than it should be especially for intro level.
Would not reccomend. Seems nice, but makes your life harder than it needs to be. Lectures are all over the place, exams riddled with trick questions. Too much work with GRQ's.
Professor Garland is possibly the worst professor I have experienced at UNC so far. Her lectures are all over the place and often are poor at explaining the important material. She relies on students to teach themselves through hundreds of guided reading questions, half of which are not relevant. If possible take this course with Dr. Ott.
Dr. Garland was an amazing professor. She definitely challenged me too critically think as a lot of our discussions revolved around case studies/data and weren't just memorizing facts. Her tests were hard but I think I really learned a lot from her class. She was so nice and really cared about her students.
Dr. Garland was a terrible professor. This class had long GRQ's and Pearson homework assignments that weren't even relevant to the class. Her lectures were boring and she failed at explaining important concepts to us. The tests were a bunch of complex and confusing questions that didn't test your knowledge of the content, but your ability to read.
Long GRQs. Always at least two lessons behind the homework and syllabus. Class outlines are a mess. Very disorganized. Will be retaking with a different professor. Recommend Dr. Ott.
So much homework for this class. The homework will not prepare you for the tests AT ALL. Studying the slides helps more than anything.
For those wondering whether to take Biol 103 with Garland, I would instead recommend taking it with anyone else. You will lose a lot of points due to obtuse question wording and a desire to test your reading comprehension rather than knowledge of biology. The required textbook is unused outside of hw and will not be a huge help on tests. Good luck.
As someone who has always excelled at Bio, Dr. Garland has made this class ridiculously difficult. The content is fine, but for some reason she feels the need to make the tests difficult through a small change in wording or some other small irrelevant thing that will never matter. Choose a different professor!
Wasn't an effective teacher, would not recommend at all!
Dr. Garland doesn't explain intricate topics very well, she glosses over them and assumes that you will teach yourself. Her exams were tricky, although I improved throughout the semester the final was ridiculously difficult, and it dropped me an entire letter grade.
She doesn't explain important concepts, just makes you figure it out and connect the lines on your own. Assignments done outside of class takes hours and has nothing to do with what we do in class. Her exams are tricks, its based on if you can read properly and not if you know the actual material. Take a dif. prof!
Do not take this professor if you can avoid her!!!!!! Take Ott instead, it isn't worth it. Makes this classes questions on quizzes and exams harder than the other class. Tests you on wording more than actual content. EVERY SINGLE QUESTION IS A TRICK QUESTION. Could get an A in this class if it weren't for her but now I have a B.
Dr Garland is a very nice person but is an extremely difficult professor. She does not explain concepts well AT ALL and most of the material you will be teaching yourself. Quizzes, Test and Exams are extremely difficult with the way she words questions just to be tricky. Take Dr. Ott instead!
This class is full of trick questions. I spent more time memorizing words so I could avoid getting tricked than actually understanding the content. Dr. Garland understands what she's talking about, but she assumes that you do too and glosses over a lot of important concepts.
This is a very hard professor. She expects you to know things 100% without actually going over them and rather glosses over which makes you get lost easily. You have to teach yourself. She loves making trick questions with difficult vocabulary to mess you up. The tests are very hard, and tests on reading rather than concepts.
1 credit, pass/fail, online class. She didn't teach anything, but rather she was in charge of managing the weekly zooms we'd have where different health professionals would talk about their careers. I found the class to be interesting, but it's whatever you make it. Barely any homework, can have camera off if you want, and super easy assignments.
Dr. Garland was by no means a terrible teacher, her lectures were often easy enough to follow along if you paid attention and everything was recorded and posted online. The only issue is that her tests are not great and her questions are designed to trick you. Its to the point you don't have to study the material, you study how to pass her tests.
This woman is the reason I want to run away from biology. Her exams are more about reading comprehension than understanding content and are filled with tricks. The peer mentors and supplementary instructors are carrying the class and are the only reason I learned anything. Avoid Alaina Garland at all costs.
As a senior, I've had Garland twice and both times have been terrible. Her exams are the worst of any prof in the Bio department. Her questions are tricky and designed to trip you up, not test your knowledge. Lecture style was very flipped; be prepared to learn on your own outside of class. She's a nice person but the stress is not worth it. Avoid.
I didn't have her but my roomie did don't take her pls do yourself a favor.
Dr. Garland is such an ANGEL, my favorite prof. She ROUNDED UP! Yes, the wording of exams is tricky, but that seems to be the nature of bio exams. She helps and encourages you through the way. And her classes are always fun with some creative funny questions that make you enjoy the class even at 8am. Median for this class is a B. I LOVE her so much
I did not find the test questions as challenging as lots of other reviewers claim. I saw a significant improvement in my grade when I focused more on my reading comprehension skills than biology skills. The thing I found most frustrating was having to learn most of the course content through homework and subpar lecturing skills.
She cares for her students and clearly enjoys teaching, but sometimes I feel her exams her unfair. To make up for material being 'easy' she tends to write exam questions that are really confusing and difficult to understand. If you can untwine all the language, it's easy to get As and Bs. Def not conducive to someone with ADHD though lol
Don't take the negative reviews too seriously! It's an intro biology class, it's not going to be easy no matter who you have. As long as you take the time outside of class to really understand the material and read VERY carefully in her tests, you will be fine. There were MANY resources that she provided to help you excel (practice tests!).
This class was unreasonably difficult for an introductory biology course. The exams are filled with exceedingly convoluted questions that feel more like riddles than assessments. Multiple select questions could have nine options and eight of them that match the criteria for a prompt, but if you pick eight you get no credit whatsoever.
Disorganized lectures with very tricky exam questions. Test for reading skill more than biology knowledge. Be prepared for weekly quizzes/assignments on Mastering/learning catalytic, which can be bad for someone who can't remember many things like me. Pro: she ROUND UP/give opportunities for missing assignments/answer questions patiently on Piazza
Your grade in the class is heavily determined by the test and final. Although lets you drop your lowest test grade, they are just unnecessarily hard and tricky. They test more reading comprehension and attention to detail rather than content. The lectures are also a little disorganized at times trying to catch up to the syllabus outline
Please do not take this professor. GRQs are extremely long and slides, which was not helpful. The class is disorganized and skips topics. Exams are extremely hard because she words them very poorly. She does not offer partial credit on multi-select problems, which she heavily uses. Quizzes are also very tricky and usually only have five questions.
I will preface this by saying Dr. Garland is an extremely nice professor who really looks out for her students. However, she gives a TON of homework with her GRQs. Additionally, her tests are more reading exams than they actually test biology. However, she does drop the lowest exam, and you get a double sided cheat sheet on every exam and final
She goes very fast through the lectures and often does not explain most topics, so be prepared to teach yourself everything after class. Her tests are very unfair as many of the questions are designed to trick/confuse you rather than test your knowledge.
Dr. Garland is one of my favorite bio professors at UNC! Exams are challenging but fair, and she's willing to drop or de-weight questions if they're too difficult or unclear. She's incredibly knowledgeable and friendly, and she's always willing to answer questions! 240 is super interesting, and the class is not hard. My sole complaint is long GRQs.
Don't be scared by her reviews, Mrs. Garland is a great professor who is clearly very knowledgeable and passionate about biology. Her tests are not conceptually hard, they just utilize tricky wording, but you are allowed a double-sided cheat sheet on every exam. The GRQs can occasionally be long, but they are helpful with learning the material.
If you can, take a class with another professor. If you cannot, you will be fine it'll just be tough.
Loved her class! she is very understanding and dropped or de-weighted several exam or quiz questions that were confusing. Lectures are long but if you go back and rewatch the class recordings you will do great in the class.
The amount of GRQs makes it feel like a biology-themed non-fiction-focused English class. Exams are worded trickily - like an English class. The amount of work is insane for the difficulty of the material. The class jumps around in the textbook, making it difficult to follow. Lecture speeds through content and doesn't put things into perspective.
Dr. Garland is a caring person, but her lectures are more confusing than clarifying. She breezes through the material, leaving gaps you must teach yourself. The material itself is not hard but the test questions are always terribly worded. Go to peer review sessions, they are more helpful than the lectures!
I have never been so ready to be done with a class. Garland is one of the worst professors I have ever had at UNC. She flies through lectures. She tests on things she says, but if you cant keep up and she doesn't post the lecture videos, you're screwed. Quizzes and exams are reading tests. Makes you do a group project that is a waste of time. GL
Sped through lectures so fast you don't have time to take any notes. Slides are extremely verbose to the point of being hard to read. Quizzes & tests are confusing, and many times it seems like questions were written to trick you instead of test your knowledge. Wholeheartedly did NOT enjoy this class nor the teaching style.
Dr. Garland tests heavily based on lecture material. GRQs are fairly long and tedious, but I'd advise to skim the textbook, and focus on lecture material. Her tests are pretty similar to her practice tests and Unit quizzes, so practice those.
I have taken her for the past 3 years out of necessity and every time I think it'll get better, it doesn't. The content itself is learnable, but her exams are not. They're tested on reading comprehension rather than your actual knowledge of the content. The amount of review I had to do for this course was appalling. Please avoid at all costs.
Exams felt like the SAT reading section. Very poorly written questions that are unnecessarily wordy. Avoid at all costs.
Professor Garland's exams are difficult, but she'll often reuse or rework questions we have already done on the tests, so practicing these is really helpful. You definitely have to put in the work, but she gives a lot of resources to help you
She's not as bad as some might say. Many of the questions on tests are reused from previous tests and practice exams. She posts the lectures but attendance is part of your grade. Overall, she's a great professor.
AVOID! I had only heard bad things about her before I took this class but had to sign up as it was the only section offered. She is a nice enough person but a HORRIBLE professor. This was definitely the most challenging class I have taken at UNC so far and I took a 400 level CHEM course with 240 this semester that was exponentially easier.
The content of this course was all over the place. The exams and quizzes are reading tests and do not test your knowledge. She flies through the lectures so you have to rewatch them after class because she likes to test on what she says rather than what is on the slides. We were constantly a lecture behind and rushing to catchup. AVOID her please!!
Dr. Garland is nice and good at explaining things, but her exams are extremely difficult. I was putting previous exam question variations on my cheat sheet instead of the actual content. The whole class is based on lectures, not GRQS. I knew the reviews were bad, but I still took her out of necessity. It's NOT worth it.
Heard bad reviews but took anyways. Test are not knowledge based and weren't knowledge based. Cheat sheets did not help at all. Nothing was thoroughly explained. A lot of critical thinking blooms questions that she never explained or taught how to approach. Avoid at all cost.
Wasn't a super hard class. Annoying for sure. Long GRQs and mastering. Dr. Garland is really really nice. Her exams are pretty hard but DO the practice exams. Learned my lesson after the first one. Also, she rounds. Overall, not as bad as people say. Just stay on top of things.
Her content was pretty simple, especially if you took 103 at UNC, but the tests weren't really based on the content, more like application. You get to drop your lowest midterm grade and have cheat sheets for tests. Don't be afraid of her - a lot of her test questions are ripped directly from quizzes and homework problems.
Tough course with exams that test more on reading comprehension than content knowledge. Lectures move quickly, so rewatching them is a must. Cheat sheets didn't help much. unstuckstudy ai was a lifesaver for practice questions to prep. Overall, a challenging class that requires consistent effort.
Pretty easy, just utilize the TA's
Dr. Garland is one of the nicest and most knowledgeable bio profs I've had at UNC. Exams are difficult, but quizzes and HW are representative of test questions. Attention-to-detail and close reading are vital. However, an A or B is very doable given the buffer points and the lowest exam being dropped. Stay on top of deadlines and rewatch lectures!
On one of the first days of class, she said 'this is a weed out class'. Pretty much sums up Dr. Garland's point of view - she only cares about making the class hard enough that people don't pursue upper level biology. One of the least caring biology professors I have had here. I don't know how she keeps winning teaching awards.
***BIOL 117 IS IN PERSON NOW*** It's really what you want to get out of this class. Great for people who don't know what they want in healthcare, but dangerously easy to fall asleep in this class. Attendance is HEAVILY monitored in this class.
I took AP Bio (BIOL 101+L) recently as a HS senior, which helped. No more cheat sheet, but exams are reasonable--based on lectures/slides, quizzes, and practice exams. Lots of grades dropped, including lowest midterm of 3; seek help from tutors, TAs, and office hours. Group seating makes the class fun. Dr. Garland knows what she's doing!
3 guest speakers from varying healthcare fields + pre-hw + post-hw every week = great exposure to diverse minds. Can be tiring at the end of the day (5:45-7:15 pm) when your mind is on other things, but attendance determines if you pass. Can't use devices/do hw (out of respect for speakers!). Def recommend for those w/ genuine healthcare interest.
Healthcare professionals came into speak with us and prof. Garland had participation grades, writing reflections, and pre class assignments. This was an easy-A that allowed us to learn from different healthcare professionals.
Homework matters for this class, it's pretty much just a sampler through guest lectures. She's very strict about not having phones and laptops out during class. I'd recommend this class to pre health people even though it is at a weird hour.
She was super cool. Took the class at 8am so my attendance was awful but she was a very good professor. Class is hard I'd say
I hated this class lowkey. Not very hard content but it is presented in hard ways. Lots of homework but most of it feels really mindless which does not help in the long run. The slides are incoherent and usually out of order so its hard to go back and look at them later to study. A vast majority of the diagrams shown are burry and unreadable.
If you can avoid Dr. Garland PLEASE DO. I have never felt so discouraged, belittled, and not prepared no matter how much i understood or studied. Her lectures aren't good, theyre very unorganized and all over the place. She doesnt explain and expects you to know, then proceeds to give the most diabolical tricky awful exams. Just dont take her.
The quality of the lectures was not good, much of the time is spent waiting for learning catalytics questions, lecture material is intended to be used for a "comprehension" of the material, but tests are based on application for case studies. Most egregious thing is the GRQs that have nothing of use, and the exams frequently had errors.
Exams were tricky and often composed of questions meant to confuse you rather than test your knowledge or application of knowledge. Spent the whole semester discussing how cheat sheets were not useful, but then let us have a cheat sheet on the final??
Good lecturer. Tests are very similar to practice + unit quizzes -- variations of same questions. Big grade buffer (drops 1 exam). Accessible in office hours + piazza. PM's + SI's pretty good. GRQs pretty useless -- don't waste your time on those or reading textbook. Lectures a bit unorganized at times. Preps you well for later stem classes at unc.
I retook this class as a transfer and despite already having credit for the material I found this class incredibly difficult. If you rewatch her lectures and understand her slides before you attempt quizzes you're usually fine. Her tests can be tricky but if you actively review her practice tests you can do well.
Solid teacher but devious tests. The content itself is light work but every question was 3 paragraphs and purpose-built to trip you up. I felt like I knew the material well but only just pulled out an A by the skin of my teeth. Mandatory attendance at 8 AM was not fun either. Group seating was good though.
Because of my background in bio, I did not find the content of the class to be overly difficult. However, her tests are unnecessarily confusing. She writes them with the intent to trick you and when asking for clarification during the test she gives none. She's very condescending and it genuinely felt like she didn't want students to do well.
Garland glosses over concepts at times, but she explains things very clearly and is willing to help when you ask her questions. I went through course outlines at least 2 times for each lecture to truly retain the information. She only tests on lecture slides. Take your time and read every word on exams! Ask questions in class to peer instructors.
Dr. Garland was a caring professor, but not the best lecturer. We learned material for the purpose of answering test questions, not understanding biology. Content was scattered and the GRQs were not helpful. However, Dr. Garland is very accessible outside of class, so make sure to ask questions! To study for the final, rework practice/past exams!
Dr. Garland is so sweet and caring for her students! The course however was very difficult in my opinion since the majority of your grade is based on exams that are extremely tricky and typically select all that apply with no partial credit. I studied for hours on end and knew the concepts but would often be thrown off by the wording of questions.
Just took first midterm, was not particularly hard but many questions (40%) were select all no partial credit, which may end up wrecking a lot of grades. Oops tokens in the class, homework (GRQ + questions) can take a very long time especially if you actually read. Lectures are important, have a lot of exam level questions or straight up exam qs.
Be prepared to commit a tremendous amount of time if you need to take this class
Dr. Garland is one of the most straightforward and direct professors. She speaks very succinctly, makes her expectations clear, and provides ample resources to succeed. Her tests are challenging and she loves to ask trick questions, but she never asked anything outside of lecture content. Spend the effort and you'll do well.
Good person, but not a good professor. Does not update grades on Canvas so no sense of where you stand in the class. The exams are like SAT style, meant to trick you rather than test knowledge. Also, the midterms have select all that apply MCQs, which do not have partial credit. No cheat sheets allowed, and Garland no longer drops an exam. AVOID!!!
Does not post slides unless asked, does not make practice for exams, no study guides, exams have select all questions with no partial credit, does not drop an exam, sometimes stops responding on Piazza, goes insanely fast and expects us to take notes in milliseconds, makes us "talk to our neighbor" for majority of class. AVOID.
The content was manageable but Dr. Garland takes the "flipped classroom" too seriously. She asks questions in class before even teaching the material as if we're supposed to master everything before class. She also loves to trick you on exams by changing one word from the practice she gives.
If I could give her zero stars I would. I honestly think that is class would not have been bad at all if anyone else was the instructor. She has no passion and her exams are always messed up somehow. Also, she grades LC based on CORRECTNESS, so keep that in mind. If you can take this class with literally anyone else, DO IT!!!
changed exams from Gradescope w/ cheat sheet to closed-book,pencil-and-paper tests & doesn't drop the lowest midterms; since she didn't have a question bank, many exam questions were taken directly from Smartwork homework; also doesn't post quizzes on Canvas because of technical issues which doesn't make sense because it works for another class
She didn't even taught in class---No passion, bad explaining concepts, etc, so self-learning required as always. But her EXAMS are RIDICULOUS. Keen advocate for multiple select while most of her answers are questionable / arguable & worded weirdly. It's a pure battle in finding who is best at reading her mysterious mind. AVOID!!! Take Kevin Slep's.
Please avoid her. Exams are heavily applicational, but no cheatsheet is given. You are expected to know EVERYTHING inside out. If you are not 100% sharp on any content, you will not be able to answer them correctly. It also doesn't help that questions are often multi-select (without partial credit) and worded vaguely. Please avoid her, please do.
I studied for WEEKS and WEEKS on end and still didn't do well on her exams. She will deliberately add "multiple choices may be correct" and then have only one answer be correct - just to trick you. She does not lecture properly, is inconsistent, and does not have the best interest of the students at heart when making exams. AVOID PLEASE!!!
dr garland has misery in her heart. this class was miserable. tests were unnecessarily hard and had no may multiselect with no partial credit. she was always behind on lectures and the slides were very lackluster.
Dr. Garland was personally very kind and I enjoyed talking to her and going to her office hours. I disliked how incredibly difficult and tricky the exams were. Every question was a trick question, and multi-select with no partial credit. The content was also so ambiguous and the class outlines were SO disorganized it stressed me out.
All of the bio classes here are super tough, but she does an okay job. The format of tests is really weird though, it's a lot of multi-select with no partial credit given and you have to read a full paragraph for the question. Super hard tests, and lots of lecturing.
Genuinely ruined STEM for me. Should have been a better experience with the way the class is designed.
Doesn't provide practice exams or hardly any study materials for exams, reads directly off slides in lecture, uses niche Smartworks questions on exams but changes one word to "trick you", stops answering questions on Piazza the day before the exam, etc. Constantly asks you to turn and talk to your neighbors just to rush through an "explanation"
Get ready to study all the materials by yourself because the lecture are useless. The majority of class she makes us talk to our neighbors and waste time instead of explaining it herself. Tests are ridiculous and half the questions are multi-select and no partial credit. She doesn't replace or drop any exams either. Would recommend with a diff prof
dr. garland seems like a nice person but she sucks at lecturing. she moves way too fast. I literally gave up at coming to lecture halfway through the semester because I knew I would have to rewatch the lecture recordings anyways. I had to teach myself and I would recommend taking this class with dr ott because you will actually learn something.
alaina obliterated my gpa. studied for the class, did all the work, went to reviews/ta sessions, but the exams made a fool of me. knowing the content cannot save u from the hate she channels into each exam question. they're literally designed to trick you. hahahaha, u really got me with the tricky wording alaina! thanks for making me feel dumb!
She seems like a good enough person, and was pretty caring to her students, which is why the difficulty of her exams confuses me. The majority of the exam questions were multiple-select with misleading phrasing and no partial credit, almost like she wanted you to get it wrong. Overall decent professor, but I'm not a bio major anymore.
Genuinely made this class so much harder than need be. The most unenthusiastic lecturer ever, you would think she despises her job. Doesn't reply to emails requesting personal meetings, exams are all made to trick you and ridiculously hard. It gets to a point where there is no point in studying. Drop it if you can, P/F if you must. Worst bio prof
Every day I go to class and every day I left confused and feeling defeated. Take Ott. Do yourself the favor.
This was by far the worst professor I've had at UNC. Please avoid I say it for your own good.
never studied more for a class and gotten this little payoff. lectures useless but rewatching was a must bc she blew through content. never ever knew what to study bc the learning objectives were only tip of the iceberg compared to what's on the exams. INSANE amount of "select all that apply" type questions. process of elimination won't help you gl
Not a great lecturer. I took this class with Ott & Garland, so the structure got super messy. Dr. Garland was always behind in lectures, and didn't explain topics well. The tests are more of reading comprehension than actual biology content. They dropped the lowest midterm and gave EC on the final, which I appreciate, but the tests aren't fair.
I took the co-taught section of 103. While Ott was teaching (the first two units) I made high Bs on both exams. While Garland was teaching (the last two units) I made low Cs. The majority of her test questions were "select all that apply" with no partial credit. Seems like a fine person but her exams are WAY too hard for an introductory bio class.
I ended with an A, but I quite literally had to kill myself for it. This class is HARD, and it feels unfair. Admittedly, I have learned more in this class than I have in any other biology course. You truly have to work yourself to death to get a good grade though.
I was in the co-taught section with Dr. Garland and Dr. Ott. They are both great professors, but definitely have different styles, especially for tests. Dr. Ott's are more application while Dr. Garland's are more memorization. Dr. Garland was very kind and helpful in office hours. The tests are difficult, so be prepared to study.
Was in the Co-Taught section. The amount of select all that apply no partial credit questions on the final was ridiculous. She's not very enthusiastic during lecture.
Bio 240 is pretty rough with either professor and as any general bio class here the exams are tricky even if you know the content. Study smartworks more than you think, exam questions related more to those than they did to lecture I felt. Pretty decent lectures and class is pretty interesting.
what the actual **** was that class, shes not a bad person dont get me wrong but she is the worst professor you can ever take. she talks too fast, she's too smart, and not in a good way, she doesn't know how to teach an introductory course, the way she words her exams is more like a comprehension test than a bio test and overall it was very unfair
Avoid if possible -- if you go into the exam having reviewed the HWs (not related to lecture) and lectures and with the mindset she's trying to trick you, you might do ok. Quizzes open for an absurdly short time with no late policy -- tanked my grade. Lectures are pretty disorganized and unrelated. She is a very sweet woman though
This class gave me anxiety simply because I did not know what she wanted. At all. Lectures were so quick, she barely taught, exams were all trick questions with no partial credit, and she does not drop or replace. Just avoid if you can.
I had Dr. Garland and Dr. Ott. Garland is much more respectful than Ott and goes over more of the content from GRQs in lecture, but her teaching style isn't great for an introductory course. She does a lot of hand-waving and only reads from the slides. Exams can be crazy difficult and Garland doesn't give enough application-based practice.
thought i would get a C in the class don't know how I managed to scrape by. the exams are HELL, so many choose all that apply with ZERO partial credit. She's nice but purposefully tries to trick you up. Not to mention all the prework we have to do and she asks questions BEFORE teaching us
BIOL 103 is hard because the tests try to trick you but if you really focus during the exams, I do think you can figure out what she is asking you. The content isn't terribly difficult. Definitely learned something, just always felt super unsettled before exams lol.
Tests are written to trick you and many questions are select all that apply with no partial credit. Her lectures are terrible; she does not explain things clearly or even at all and pads lecture time by making us talk to our neighbors an excessive amount. She grades slowly and has a poorly organized canvas page. She seems very lazy and doesn't care
I didn't like the format of her exams; select all that apply with no partial credit for most of the questions.
She's not a bad professor/person. She knows her stuff. BUT you gotta work your butt off. I procrastinated and always studied until the last minute, and it turned out ok, but if I could redo it, I would study much harder. Content itself isn't hard, but she tries to trick you on the tests. Hate the select all. Grade not revealed until very end.
Dr. Garland's canvas page was so unorganized, and it was hard to find class materials. Her exams were so difficult, and all the questions were select all with no partial credit. She doesn't seem to care about her students, breezes over content, often cancels office hours, and doesn't explain problems in class. It was impossible to take notes. Avoid
Avoid for any biology classes if possible. Lectures are 90% talking to neighbors and the rest is spent desperately trying to keep up with her as she flies through slides. Exam questions are meant to trick you and majority are select all (no partial credit). Content wasn't difficult but it felt like we were teaching ourselves. Wouldn't take again.
Don't take it with her if you want to protect your sanity.
Just no. If you want to pass this class, do not take it with her. She is text heavy with many select all that apply questions with no partial credit.
Would not recommend for freshman. I took this course in my freshman year and went through a massive learning curve. I feel the way she words her tests are tricky, otherwise this is a straightforward class, 100% doable.
This class is definitely challenging but it is very worth it. Her questions are worded weirdly sometimes but after a while you learn the style of her teaching. Succeeding in her class does require dedication so definitely make sure you have time to really look over material. She is very nice and funny if you go to her office hours!
Participation and Homework matter a lot, make sure you re read your answers after you submit. But overall good if you are going into healthcare and want to explore different fields. All you need to do is pay attention in the once a week lecture.
Midterms are so incredibly difficult because of wording and she always try to trick you. On every question. Also does a lot of "select all that apply" with no partial credit. Lowest midterm exam is dropped though! She is a very nice person, super easy to access, and always willing to work with students to help them succeed in the class.
Dr. Garland overall was a solid professor for BIOL 103. The class itself is a lot of memorization and not as much application. Her lectures are somewhat engaging, but sometimes she didn't explain concepts too clearly. Her exams are definitely a little tricky, with many select all that apply questions and little partial credit.
Really fun class with interesting material, but a lot of work and reading. Lots of group work and the lectures are engaging, but the tests are tricky so be prepared to study!
Dr. Garland is nice, a good teacher, and knows her stuff. The course content is not objectively difficult but the way the tests are written (select all that apply, trick questions, subtle nuances) makes the class quite hard and time-consuming. BUT, all in all, if you put the work in, you WILL come out a much stronger bio student. Worth it IMO.
always screaming at kids for having their laptops open in class, which I KIND of understood because this class is a pass/fail and only attendance based, but she was kind of strict it was weird.
I hated the class in the beginning of the semester and it's definitely killing my gpa but the material is interesting and I feel like I've learned a lot this semester. I wouldn't expect an A unless you're a god at bio but I wouldn't avoid it
I had Garland as the main instructor for Bio117. The class format was great and very engaging as we had a variety of healthcare professionals as speakers. I learned a lot from this course and was glad I took it. Attendance and participation are mandatory, but you are allowed to miss up to 2 assignments and 1 class.
She does not teach at all! She expects you to learn everything before class and barely goes over power points. Please do not take care. She is not a good professor. Wish I took Ott.
BEST BIOLOGY PROFESSOR. Anyone complaining about her just didn't put in the work. Honestly, such a sweet human, such a great class. Garland did everything in this class to help us succeed. Nearly every midterm was curved, she let students debate her on questions on exams and that occasionally raised our grades, and she drops your lowest midterm.
Homework is boring and the tests are an exercise in reading comprehension rather than subject mastery and occasionally include trivia questions. Lectures are designed to not really provide much content, but slides are helpful for exams. I didn't make an A on any test the whole semester. Definitely harder than Ott.
Great teacher, great class. Lectures are a small percentage of your grade but you can without a doubt still get an A without going to lecture.
A true sweetheart, seriously SO compassionate & roots for everyone. Tests are hard, with half select all that apply and tricky wording but not impossible when you learn her patterns. Rework quiz questions and ignore GRQs. DEF go to office hours - she shares really cool info that deepened my appreciation for bio. Garland is a QUEEN!
Despite her bad reputation I thought she was a good lecturer, but exams were definitely hard due to them being majority select all that apply and no partial credit. The material itself isn't super difficult if you study hard, but the exam structure made it difficult to score high (tests were worth 72% of your grade). Be prepared to put in effort!
Definitely spent a LOT of time studying for this class, but she does try her best to make it fair. Go to SI sessions and study the lesson quizzes/practice exams. Often gives points back on exams for multiple questions if questions were vague. Had a 92.85 but she was kind enough to round everyone with a >.5 up:). Consistent review>cramming is a must
Her lectures can be a bit boring at times, but there are definitely days with a lot of peer interaction that are more engaging. The homework can be relatively long at times, but her quizzes aren't too bad. Her midterms can be a bit more difficult as well due to being very heavy with "select all that apply" questions that offer no partial credit.
No basic knowledge will be covered in class. Preparation before class is extremely important. The professor's lecture sequence is different from that of the textbook. There is too much content, and the exam content is very diverse and detailed. Lesson quiz, unit quiz, three midterms, and final are worth a lot.
