alan's a good guy, he leads fun and interesting discussions. we end up talking about the most random stuff, yet still keep on the topic. he's very easy going and he'll help you with revisions whenever you need to. he's very personable and keeps it real.
He is a good teacher, but not worthy the Depaul tuition. The only two classes he attempted to explain topics; it was clear his lack of experience. He reads his notes all the time… on the other hand he does help you one on one he if you ask for it.
he is a great professor, always trying to help the students in anyway he can. he is very understanding.
Prof Ackmann was new this year and I thought he was amaizing. He really got to know the students and it was the BEST english class I have ever taken. I learned a lot surprisingly and I hate English. He also gave homework depending on OUR schedules. I think he is great.
nice guy, helpful
Excellent professor. Very clear and easy to understand. Is very willing to help you outside of class to make your paper even better. Would definitely take again.
Yeah he may be a nice guy but his classes are boring, he rambles and talks to the class as if it we were in elementry schol, his grading sucks, and the final at the end of the term is off the wall long, and you have to remeber quotes.
He was not very understanding. Very hard grader without even giving advise on how to fix anything. Would never take a course of his again.
Terrible teacher. He expects you to write like a Ph.D. He doesn't provide useful feedback. If you have been getting A's in English and want to maintain that, find a diff. professor. I recommend James Beasley. He makes you read handouts out loud as if we were high school students. Very boring. Does not give A's. You will be lucky if you can get a B.
He's a disappointment.
i don't recommend him to anyone for anything. it's best to just stay away. he grades terribly.
He's okay; not that great. Grading sucks and he's not understanding at all. There are better English teachers out there. Find a different one.
dont take him
does not give useful comments on papers, does not answer all questions, grades very hard
if u take his class ur stress level will shoot up to the maximum...good luck
He talks too fast and it's hard to understand what he's saying. Very difficult grader. The final is ridiculous. It's long and he makes you memorize LOTS of definitions. DO NOT TAKE HIM FOR ENGLISH 104. IF YOU ALREADY SIGNED UP FOR HIS CLASS, SWITCH IMMEDIATELY BECAUSE YOU WILL REGRET IT.
difficult teacher...you can't win with him...he misguides and confuses himself with handouts and worksheets. yes, u have to do WORKSHEETS in a college level class...the type of worksheets he makes u do are about fragments, commas, sentences, subject/verbs. what a waste of time. yet, it's still not an easy class
he's nice but that's that only good thing about him. you will not get an A in this class
He favors certain students. Very unfair grader. Taking his english class is not worth anyone's time. Find a different english 104 teacher. If you can't find a diff. one then wait til the next quarter. Just don't take his class. That's my honest advice to anyone taking english 104.
Very harsh grader. Does not grade based on a student's effort; grades a student based on how PERFECT his/her papers are. Wants perfection in a student's work, and if your work is not perfect, then you will probably get a C.
i hate him with every last breath i have in me...he's a useless piece of ---- and none of his feedback is useful. he gives bad advice on papers and if u follow them, he marks off saying it's wrong (WHEN THAT'S THE ADVICE HE GAVE U TO BEGIN WITH). he subconsciously second guesses his teaching. i could teach english 104 better than this punk.
lol i agree with all the comments under me..dont take ackmann
he is the biggest jerk on earth and hes just going to piss the fck out of you so dont take his class...in fact i think he should get fired...i dont know how the hell depaul hired him
on a scale of 1-10 (1 being worst to 10 being best) i rate him a -293,405,503,576,111,304,500 repeating.
unfair grader, not a good teacher
His teaching was okay. Not bad but not great either. He really wants people to talk in this class and it just doesn't work. It was the most boring class I have ever taken and dreaded going to it every time...prob. because you spend the whole quarter not writing anything but a 10 page researcher paper due the last week of class.
Find a diff. english teacher cause this one will do you no good.
DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS! YOU WILL REGRET IT! PERIOD.
useless; i don't recommend him
He does not grade fairly at all! People work their brains out and they don't get the grades they deserve. It's like he just picks grades out of a hat. He should be a magician not a professor! DO NOT TAKE ANY OF HIS CLASSES!
harsh grader, unfair, sometimes rude
I highly DON'T recommend him.
YOU WILL NOT PASS IF YOU TAKE ALAN'S CLASS. HE IS AN IMPOSSIBLE GRADER AND HIS CLASS IS SO SO SO BORING. HE PUTS STUDENTS THROUGH HELL WITH ALL THAT STUPID UNNECESSARY WORK. HE SPENDS DAYS TEACHING ABOUT COMMAS AND PERIODS (STUFF WE LEARNED IN FIRST GRADE). THE CLASS IS A WASTE OF TIME AND YOU STILL WON'T GET AN A. FIND A DIFFERENT ENGLISH TEACHER.
Amazing teacher! I hate english classes but Alan is a wonderful professor and made the class very informative. He is very helpfull and teaches very useful lessons. A moderatley difficult grader but very fair. Definitely recommend him. Not difficult to get an A and worthwhile.
not a fair grader, teaches like a robot
I disagree with all these reviews that Ackmann is a ridiculously hard grader. I think with this class you get what you put in. If you work really hard and actually listen to the things he teaches and apply them, you will do great. If you try to bs your way through the class though don't be surprised if you don't do well. I enjoyed his class
I thought he was one of the best professors I have had. Although some of his assignments can be tedious, I found them to be very helpful. He makes it a strong point to go over grammar usage because after peer reviewing other students' papers it's obvious that grammar can sometimes be a very prevalent issue. Overall, he is a very intelligent teac
Great prof. Assignments are a bit tedious, but if you follow his instructions you can get an A. Learned a lot in the class. Definite Recommend.
Great Prof. Highly Recommend. Assignments are a bit tedious, but if you follow his instructions youll do well. Listen to what he has to say and you'll learn a lot.
I think what people are overlooking here is that he is teaching required, basic english writing/rhetoric courses. This is not fun stuff! It's essential, and he does a good job of preparing students for what is to come. The class may be dry, but he's very helpful and nice, and I did not find him to be an exceptionally difficult grader.
Great teacher! very fun and helpful at the same time
Mr. Ackmann is an excellent English Prof. The class isn't hard and he is very flexible around the schedule of others.
He's a nice enough guy,and he teaches the material well... but I agree with previous statements, in that he grades tough. He expects perfection, as it's been hard to get any As on his assignments.
He was a nice guy, had energy, was always willing to help, and he was crystal clear. I liked him. I will somewhat agree on the grading aspect. He did grade a little harder but it was not bad. He gives reading quizes but if you glance over the reading b4 class you will get it. I'm not an english fan at all but his class was one i looked forward to.
excellent professor! very helpful and even entertaining. he made his expectations and explanations very clear. i also found him to be adorable :)
The class was terrible. All he did was hand out pointless worksheets that he made students read outloud and constantly repeated himself. I felt like i was in elementary school again. He always made sure to take the full hour and a half with material that could be covered in 30 mins. Very annoying.
The bad things are that he is heavy on attendance, never gives days off class or lets you out early, and also he is a tough grader that requires a lot of work. The good thing about him however is that he has a decent sense of humor, and wants to see his students do well if you go to class and do the minimal work he will pass you
Treated us like babies. For every single group activity we did he took class time out to hand select each individual group and make a big deal out of making sure you never worked with the same people. Went out of his way to tell you us take out a sheet of paper and a pen to take notes. This is college not first grade. Tedious and boring.
He is very knowledgeable in the topic. I came into the class not being all that good of a writer, but all his exercises helped tremendously! I would highly recommend him if you need practice in writing. He doesn?t really take any days off but Its College were not babies like someone said so go to class! I would recommend him to EVERYONE!!!
As a straight A student, I found it impossible to get an A on most assignments! He has extremely high expectations because of his background and takes off points for minor things. So if you want an A I recommend you meet with him at least twice to discuss your progress. He's a nice guy outside of class. Oh, and be sure to participate in every class
really tough grader. i considered myself a good writer before this class, getting A's in English my whole life. it was impossible to get an A on anything in his class. really nit picky. GPA killer.
Why would someone still recommend him even though he is not even easy? His class was so useless yet he graded so hard on our papers. By the time you see this, you're probably stuck with him because that is how DePaul plays with their students. Just wait-list yourself somewhere else. Note: I am not mad when I wrote this, thus, am I creditable?
The type of professor who has everything planned out down to the minute. That kind of structure made me not like the class. Also his comments on papers were not helpful at all. Sometimes they were just hurtful. I will not take this professor again.
Since the 3rd grade i have been praised for my writing skills, and hardly ever got anything lower than a B+. This guy gave me a C-. He teaches a 2 credit 5 week undergrad course and treats it like its the most important class in the curriculum. Gave me a C on a resume that has gotten me 2 professional level jobs, in this economy! DO NOT TAKE HIM!
He is a nice guy and he is very smart on his subject. He is very lenient and if you can make up a good excuse he will believe it. However he fails at trying to be funny and he is kind of boring at times. I have a neutral attitude towards him.
He means well, but avoid this professor if you can. Class time is too structured and wasted. He co-wrote the textbook (which explains enough) and gave reading quizzes that you might not pass even if you read. He also talks down to the class as if we're in elementary school and have never heard of writing. Papers are also graded harshly. Avoid him.
I love Professor Ackmann! He is such an adorable guy who works really hard at what he does. His classes are easy, but he still expects his students to put up an honest effort. He was one of my first professors at DePaul, and I thought he did such a great job! Very smart guy, too.
Okay I have to be honest that he is tough. But what he taught me was totally worth my tuition. If you are trying to improve your writing, take him. If you are just one of those people who wanna get As without working hard, then don't.
Prof Ackman is very funny, nice, and personable. His lectures were fun and the homework was slightly longer than most courses, but straightforward. It's fun to watch as he acts out scenes from TV shows to make his points. Although he grades pretty hard, his lessons have helped me to drastically improve in my writing. Highly recommended.
Professor Ackmann is a tough grader but he is very helpful outside of class. He helped me several times and he probably saved me a letter grade or two just based off of how he directed my writing. He is funny and I highly recommend
I took the laptop mandatory class, and it was really interactive which was a nice change of pace. The assignments made you think but he gave you all of the tools necessary to organize and write a good paper. I recommend taking him if you are able to keep up with assignments and if you are attentive in class.
Extremely hard grader and expects students to be proficient writers at freshman level. Graded as though this was an upper level class. Definitely do not recommend.
Professor Ackmann is very nice and is helpful. The material for this class is verrrrrrrry boring and professor Ackmann talks very softly sometimes... So I nearly fall asleep during the lectures. But the class is easy and straight forward. Ackmann makes it clear what you need to do to pass.
He is a nice professor and is willing to help. But there are assignments due almost every class, most of which are busy work. They are not hard, but are time consuming. I took this class in the last quarter of junior year, so the amount of work distracted me from other harder classes. Take this class as a freshman!
Decent teacher, horrible grader. Grades a freshman class like a graduate level course. Impossible to get an A, and his grading scale even makes it more difficult. Class is filled with busy work and useless assignments, and the final exam was filled with a bunch of stuff that talked about in passing in class. If you care about your grade avoid him.
He is a nice professor and wants everybody to understand the materials. Always answer students questions throughly. But grade too strict on the paper. The final was all written and hard.
I took Professor Ackmann online. The workload is reasonable and fair. His lectures can get a bit dry, but the information is useful. His feedback is very clear and direct. He offers extra credit and was very good about responding to emails.
He's an English professor, so he is pretty detailed in essay comments (sometimes even a bit too detailed). He's a very nice guy and allows students the chance to speak.
Professor Ackmann is very confusing. He needs to speak in layman's terms. This class focuses on rhetoric and most papers are analyzing different rhetorical strategies. He's very foggy on what he's looking for and rarely gives example primary sources of past assignments or even examples he would write for class. Horrible don't take him.
Very confusing -Whenever explaining writing assignments he is very confusing in what he is looking for. beg for help - He is very late responding to e-mails. If you have questions you better be prepared to receive a reply two to three days later. If you're a very good writer who can write about communication of subcultures easily then take him.
Despite what will probably come out as a low rating, I'm just being honest. Of course you have to work for it, it's a class. This may be an "Easy A" for me, but someone who dislikes writing and reading may have problems. For 103 at least, I have been fairly successful so far. Do the readings, and work consistently on your papers.
Very nit-picky.
Pretty good. I honestly didn't put enough into it, but he's cool. He will count on you to do the readings, and quiz you on them. Requires a little attention in class to know what's up. He helps pretty well, but you will need to show interest to get a good grade.
He is the definition of a dry professor. Is an incredibly nit picky grader. I would avoid
I took Professor Ackmann for his Doctor Who LSP course. I took it because it was the only class left for LSP. I didn't like the show Doctor Who and I didn't know how I would like the class. Turned out I loved it and it was the best class ever. He gives great feedback and takes the time to do so. Take this class. I can't stop watching Doctor Who.
Professor AAcman is not engaging or clear on what he wants. If you figure out how he likes it your grade will be ok if not be prepared to lose lots of points even if it is good work.
Goofy guy with the best intentions for his students! Most helpful teacher I've had to date with regards to a life relevant class. Take him!!!!
(Crisis Context) A nice guy but beware readings can be a lot of pages. Classes are easy but are lecture based. No midterm for the class. You do 8-9 reading journals and have 2 short papers. The final, is a lot. It's not bad but it's a lot of work. You have to give a 15min presentation, take a test and turn that presentation into an 8 page paper.
Prof. Ackmann is really particular about what he wants but very vague in his instructions. Only after you submit something and are graded on it will you know what you should have done. A LOT of readings, then a bunch of assignments crammed in at the end; 15 min presentation, 10 pg paper, short answer exam on words from readings. He expects a lot.
Textbook is needed. Required watching lots of videos and posting in online discussions. Lots of pages to read but the book uses lots of images so not that bad. Class is made up of 4 major assignments, class activities and reading quizzes. Reading quizzes are not that bad, 5 questions max. Professor is nice, replies via email quickly.
I was hesitant about taking this professor, but it ended up going well. He is very clear what he expects out of you, and I expected the work load to be much heavier when reading the reviews here. The quizzes were super easy As, and the major assignments were easily done in one day, take him if you wanna take this course online rather than going in.
The only other review I've left on this site was because I really enjoyed a teacher. Apparently now it's time for the opposite. Never have I had a more tedious and annoying class. I'm leaving this because the school review just wasn't enough. Mother of God, this school has some bad profs but what the heck man? Vague feedback and repetitive tasks.
I took him for Professional Writing and found that everything ran as expected and all the materials provided actually helped me with assignments. I know some people had issues with him, but I found that if I came in and asked for help, he could tel me exactly what I could do to improve a document.
Professor Ackmann is one of those professors where no matter how much effort you put into his class, he'll always find ways to subtract points from your assignments. If you are cool with getting a C or B even while putting in a lot of effort, if not don't take him.
I don't agree with some of these reviews. Professor Ackmann is a fine teacher, I never found him to be overly difficult or nitpicky on grading. Sometimes there would be a little more homework than I would have liked but it was never something I had to sacrifice too much time to. Turn things in on time and put forth a little effort, you will do fine
Critical with papers. Talks a lot.
This class wasn't bad at all! We did have homework, but we did it in class most of the time and it related to our bigger assignments. The grading criteria is clear and rubric posted. However, if you want additional help, the professor is very accessible and will even read your paper for feedback. The lectures may get long but they're well done.
he's not BAD. he can be a bit confusing but if you stay after class he'll answer your questions. there are weekly reading entries and 3 major papers. his feedback isn't that helpful, he just points out what he likes so you know what to keep doing. put in a little effort and you'll be good
Doesn't believe in giving A's, work must be flawless to receive anything higher than a low B on the papers. If you're ok with taking the low grade then I'd recommend, personally I couldn't afford it. Class discussions were fun, but you must talk a lot to receive participation credit. Easily accessible outside of class and willing to try to help.
It was very hard to get an A in this class. Getting anything over an 94% is difficult with his grading. I managed to get 100% on the final paper but that was only after the revision (final draft). But, the class was fun and its easy to discuss if you actually read and watched the show. You have room to get ur grade up but requires a lot of effort.
Ackmann is a nice guy but he is particular with his grading and it is annoying. His feedback is very vague and he expects you to find extra time out of your schedule to have a meeting with him to learn how to improve instead of just putting it in the online feedback right away. No midterm or final, just a lot of assignments. But take someone else.
I had by far my best online class experience with WRD 206. I felt that the video materials were short and clear. There are a lot of discussion posts and small activities, but they can be completed pretty quickly. He left very thorough feedback on assignments, and I found him very helpful.
The class was interesting and definitely is better with class participation. He is always open to hear different viewpoints/experiences on the topics discussed. Often small group activities in class, and the final was a group presentation on a haunted location you must visit outside of class. Short journal entries due based on readings & 3 papers.
Very Critical on essay grading. Hard to get anything higher than a B on essays. Participation does matter. He does give the opportunity for him to revise your essay 1 to 2 days before essay is due.
I liked Prof Ackmann. He does a good job of explaining what is expected and how to go about it. I will say I got tired of the constant assignments and discussions that have very particular criteria, but other than that, the class is super chill and pretty straightforward.
I was nervous going into this class after reading all of the bad reviews, but as long as you put in the work you should have no trouble with Professor Ackmann. He makes himself available to provide feedback on major assignments, which I took advantage of, and that definitely helped my grade. Quizzes and minor assignments are easy as well
Alan is actually the worst professor known to DePaul university. He somehow didn't mention a portion of our paper grade which was worth a whole letter grade on our final. If you are planning on taking him, don't! He responds after the class is closed and has no mercy for your personal situations.
Does not respond to help you, Will give vague answers and expects you to join 1 on 1 calls to discuss strategies, weird dude
Great professor! Very reasonable workload; weekly journals were quick/easy. This is a FLEX class, and online students' messages in chat are always responded to. Expected to participate/speak. Do not take this class if you dislike writing, that is the bulk of the work. Formal papers are graded fairly, but strictly.
He was a cool dude, but holy did he grade like it was judgment day. Very very VERY picky grader, I had him for my Explore Chicago class, and it was a fun concept of a class. He just graded everything so hard so it kinda killed it alittle.
This Class is extremely discussion-based. Don't expect to get more than an 89. The grader is tough.
Lots of mind-twisting work, vague guidelines with really tough grading. Async group projects are not really a good idea. Wouldn't recommend.
