Most interesting prof I have had at IUP!

he keeps class interesting. not your standard lectures. very intelligent and one of the limited # of history professors who can convey it to students.

Keeps class semi-interesting, but for 3 hours, kinda gets boring. Very picky with his exams and assignments. Not recommended for those not into history.
Very intelligent & extremely cynical. Very energetic in the class room.
He was boring and graded very hard on his papers. Also alot of papers had to be writin in a short period of time.
very intelligent man, funny as well...made the class fun...i would recommend him!!!!
Ver interesting and funny. Only two exams and a paper as major assignments. Great professor
This prof. made history 195 impossible. Made class read many extra books, write huge papers etc. As a non history major I was offended by his expectations and withdrew from the course. Take Rakonin she's aousome and a great prof.

Hard class, read the 3 books assigned and all 30 papers due, and you'll do fine. He is very intelligent and relates to students well, but extremely hard
I dropped his class because he was impossible. His tests were hard, his papers were hard, and I couldn't stand him moving around some much....annoying! Stay in one place!
Dr. Baumler is a very good professor. The problem with this is that the people who want to walk in and take their easy 195 course get really upset with him. If you're willing to actually read the books and do the work, you have nothing to worry about.
he was great and easy too. anybody who though he was hard must be pretty stupid.
This class was insanely hard. Baumler expects you to have the analyzing skills of a history expert your freshmen year without teaching you anything. Also, lots of assignments were given at once and due very close together.
Excellent Prof. Really knows his stuff. If you do your reading and put a little effort into your papers you will do fine.
He doesn't let students off easily, he expects you to learn and be able to analyze material, even in 195. That being said, he's engaging and enthusiastic, and you will learn something.
lost my final and then gave me an F. This man is obviously angry at the world.
Im a history major and this guy was impossible...especially for INTRO TO HISTORY! He talks about all things unimportant to the class. Can't explain if his life depended on it! HORRIBLE TEACHER. DO NOT TAKE HIM!
Very energetic and fun. He keeps your attention throughout the entire lecture and is able to speak so you can easily write notes on the subject. I agree with the person who said if you don't like this teacher then you are just stupid or hate history.
this class is hard even for an intro course.. i got this class 3 days before the semester started.. shows how much of a great teacher he is facing his class is still open less than a week before the semester
Do not take his class. I repeat DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS. Not only is he insanely annoying and can't stand in the same place for more than 2 seconds, he makes you feel like a complete idiot if you answer a question wrong. STAY FAR FAR AWAY.
Teacher was enthustiastic about the course, made the classes interesting with situations we could relate to. Tests were fairly easy if you like writing essays, book report wasn't very fun though. Overall a decent teacher, thumbs in the middle leaning up
do not take class with this guy. it's boring and he class is terrible. the book is sooo boring to read and almost as boring as him. don't take class with this guy
very enthusiastic. makes history fun. i definately reccomend him if you want to learn. you will earn your grade but is a great class
I hope you like to write papers, you have to write like 2 a week. Also the books he picks to read, BORING! He is helpful if you ask him to help, but he is very unfair at grading so you WILL have to ask him for help....
little communication
Dr. Baumler actually has standards and you can't turn in crap and expect a good grade. There is a lot of writing for intro, but the papers are pretty easy and he always lets you re-write them. 200 is always, always boring no matter who you take but it really could have been worse
HIST 200 is very hard with Baumler, tons of reading and tons of papers that he grades harshly. Many seem to hate his personality, but I think he's hilarious and it makes class much better. If you can't take a joke stay away, take him if you have a sense of humor and like a challenging yet fair prof.
extremely hard grader. expects graduate level work. pretty condescending when you go in to office hours for help too.
standards for papers are way too high for an intro class. good guy, but irritating and frustrating overall.
Nice person but bad teacher. I had to ask for help since he does have standers....but way to high for lvl 200. That and his help isnt really help. Rewriting papers for him is a waste of time, your grade wont be higher. Take him ONLY if it is your last resort.
This teacher sucks ass, very borning and the test suck
Do not take his class! Believe me, I am getting A's in all of my other ones, and failing his. He seems like he is nice, but doesn't want to help you at all. He has all quizzes and one test. Don't take him unless you want to be bored and like to fail.
His class was the hardest of my life. I'm failing- literally failing. And I am a straight "A" student. I hated history before I took this required course, and now I really hate it. Its all quizzes every week and a midterm and final. The quizzes/test are impossible. But don't get me wrong, he is a great teacher and very enthusiastic about the topic.
I like him. He's hard, but you really do learn. Maybe you people should try harder...
The class is all taking notes, not attendance policy. But a lot of people are failing! He covers some things in class, but then you take the tests on WebtCT and it is information you haven't even learned or went over in class. I am really failing b/c the tests are very short and really difficult!
If you read the chapters and short readings he tells you to then you will do fine on the web CT quizes. He is helpful if you go to his office also. It just takes a little more trying than what I wanted to do in a history class!
By far the worst teacher I have had at iup in four years. Drop/Withdraw now and save yourself. Get into any class you can with Ricketts and avoid this man at all costs. HORRIFIC.
If you go to class and pay attention to his lecture then you will do fine on the webct quizes. I have no problem with him and makes learning history fun if you acutally pay attention to his lecture and what hes saying instead of coming to class to sleep.
He's very amusing and knows what he's talking about. I've taken many classes with him and have enjoyed them all.

Baumler is the man. He makes classes fun and intresting and knows what he's talking about. I would reccomend him for anyone in any class.
Am I in the same class these people are talking about? He's really energetic, though the lectures are kind of long...but the quizzes are few and far between, and they're EASY! So are the exams...I aced them all.
I've read through some of the comments. He has obviously changed a lot about the class. It really isnt that hard at all. There have been like three in class, brief quizzes so you can see if you are getting the material. Tests are a breeze. Easy class and I hate history.
He is very energetic. I always look forward to going to his classes. He is also very good at giving help if you ask him for it. Tests and quiz's are the easiest I've had all year, he goes over the majority of the material in class. I highly recommend him.
I have to say I enjoyed his class. He kept me entertained with his great enthusiasm, life experiences, and stories. He gave me a new way to relate to history, not just a bunch of facts. And trust me history wasn't my favorite subject but he always made it interesting. I have recommended him.
Dude, this class is an automatic A. Recommend Baumler to anyone how can take him for 200.
He does have a good sense of humor. He holds your attention the whole time. He is a tough grader, but if you work hard, you'll get atleast a B if not an A.

this guy pretty much sucks. I would not recommend him. He gives wayyy to much work for an introductory class. I was constantly writing papers and it seemed like i didn't have enough time for my other, more important classes.
It seems like this teacher has changed over time. I had him and he was very easy. Light reading compared to most History classes and the papers we wrote were easy. The class is pretty boring, though. Overall, easy class. If you want an easy intro course, then I would take him.
not a good prof... at all
He is a very active professor, who is very interested in his subject. He uses power point for an outline but lectures a lot. He holds your attention and does try to insert humor. He is a tough grader of papers and assigns slightly more writing than average. Overall a good teacher; difficult but not impossible to a good grade.
He is a tough grader of papers. His lectures are interesting because he is a very active lecturer. He assigns more writing and reading than most, but its not unmanageable.
he is very funny usually and keeps my attention. for my class, he only had 3 exams graded.. and that's it. no review, no study guide, no extra credit. we read two books so far too, which sucked because they take forever and he'll only ask a few questions about them on the test, which are comprehension. not facts. not recommended, but he's fun?
He relates lessons to modern examples and can be very funny. No textbook so have to rely on what he gets to in lectures but as long as you pay attention, you,ll pass the class!
Tries to keep class as entertaining as possible even though it is all lecture. There is no textbook for the class just 3 smaller books you need to read. There are only 3 big tests and he doesn't give any study guides so it's hard to know what to exactly study. Talks really fast and you take a lot of notes. Nice guy but I don't recommend him.
very much into what he does for a living, he enjoys his job and it comes across with the way he teaches. no textbook/hw. just show up, take good notes, and study and you'll be fine. read 3 novels during the course which are easy and take 3 non-accumulative tests. i recommend him
Has to be the worst teacher to date. He doesn't help his students AT ALL when they go to see him. He tries and keeps class interesting, but his punts are not needed and well just not funny. He keeps outline up for about 1 minute and if you don't get it all then too bad. Tests are hard and half of the stuff he didn't even mention in notes.
No textbook. Attendace isnt mandatory. just come to class and pay attention. take GOOD notes and you'll pass the only 3 tests in the class. Plus he's really goofy &funny and keeps the class interesting. loved waking up to go to his class!
I really enjoyed him. His lectures weren't painful to sit through and he is really funny which makes it easier to pay attention. I HATE history and I actually enjoyed this class. There's only three grades so you have to do good on those tests to get an A. No textbook just three short novels. Overall I'd say take him.
funny guy. doesnt care about assignments but you still have to do them.
absolutely hated this class! lectures were so boring unless you really enjoy history.. no textbook, attendance was not mandatory.. but if you don't go, you'll fail. only 3 exams that make up your grade. exams are really hard because you never know what is going to be on them. STAY AWAY FROM THIS PROFESSOR.
stay away from him. nice guy but theres only 3 assignments and one paper. doesnt even give study guides or anything. lectures are torturous. take anyone else
I would definitely avoid this professor, unless you are really interested in history. There are no study guides, and there's no book, making exams near impossible.
Baumler was a really cool guy. He was extremely funny and was just an all around good guy. He gives a lot of notes and really quickly so good note taking skills are a must for him. He doesn't have a text books and just his notes which is nice. Tests are hard just make sure reading assignments are completed. He is really cool and I enjoyed him alot.
VERY good class, learned a lot in it.
The worst professor there is PERIOD!!!! he clearly knows what he is talking about he just hasnt mastered teaching it yet if you wanna fail history he is your guy!!...WHO TEACHES HISTORY WITHOUT A TEXTBOOK????
Baumler was a very animated professor. Very funny, knew what he was talking about, and really seemed to enjoy the subject. 3 or 4 tests, one essay. Definitely take notes.
Prof. Baumler was definitely one of my favorite professors. The course is mandatory for Liberal Arts, but I really enjoyed it and learned a lot. He has a great sense of humor and makes the class fun. There is no textbook, but his tests come rightfrom the notes. Definitely take him if you want an interesting class and can study without a book.
His class alone is enough to drive some mad. Add that on to four other classes. If you can, aviod.
I like him, he's very funny and makes class entertaining. However, he grades outrageously hard. Deducted 20% off a paper because I had a year incorrect by 4 years. I'd skip his class, unless you don't care about your GPA.
Hes easy ,funny..sometimes and chill. Its an easy class.
I advise anyone reading the angry comments to remind yourselves that those were made by people with poor grades, who couldn't see past his tough grading. He's a wonderfully humorous professor, who tries to get people to participate and he really knows what he's talking about. Take his class. It isn't bad if you pay attention and can write.
Professor Baumler is a very good teacher. He knows exactly what he is talking about and the best part about the class is the fact that he assigns papers rather than tests. He is a good presentor and i always look forward to learning from him.
While he seems to be a great man on a personal level, academically and professionally he is not. He lacks clarity in his assignments, and what he wants. He do not know how to explain his assignments, yet he grades hard and its not constructive criticism. He's very general and his office hours are no help either. I recommend no one to take his class
expect to have many reading assignments if you are enrolling in his history or asian studies classes. his class format is always similar: no "textbooks" but normally 3 or more books assigned per semester. expect to read about 2 scholarly articles each week. the reading is heavy and tests tend to be take-home (extra difficult)
Poor. He grades his papers really hard. No textbook which makes it even harder to follow along with him. He lacks clarity and barely helps you when you ask for it. This class was writing intensive so it was a paper due weekly along with a 12 page midterm and final.
He clearly knows what he's talking about, he just doesn't teach it very well. The class was taught from an asian studies perspective which is his area of expertise but not my area of interest which didn't help. I never knew where I stood with him as he always seemed to be disappointed with me. I got D's on my assignments but an A in the class.
He is not very helpful, very unclear about the things he wants, then grades toughly about it. Hes constantly telling you that being a history major sucks and overall is kind of mean.
He definitely does have a unique sense of humor and he does seem to know what he's talking about. He's also very lenient when it comes to late assignments. However, he does grade tough and at times it's hard to understand what he wants out of us. There is a lot of writing in the class and that's usually where he's critical with grading the most.
ATTENTION HISTORY 295 TAKERS: Baumler is not a good professor at all! I am a straight A student, but even I have a really tough time in his class! He is unclear about what he wants and grades very toughly! He spends the whole class lecturing about how being a History major sucks. Hated going to this class more than anything. :(
He was never clear about what he wanted from assignments. At the beginning of the semester, he would have us turn in several drafts, and then when I handed in final papers he would write that he didn't like the topic I chose, when he SAW ALL MY DRAFTS AND NEVER SAID A WORD. He made a girl cry, and I felt like I had to laugh at his jokes.
I am a senior and took Dr. Baulmer's History of Eastern Asia class to fulfill my history requirements. Have averaged B's-A's in every class I have taken at IUP. Yet, I had to withdraw from Dr. Baulmer's course. He is VERY UNCLEAR and gives VAUGE directions for his assignments. After taking rough drafts to him he still gave me a D. Not worth taking.
Usually was unclear with grading criteria. Though he can be rude and annoying at times, he is willing to help when asked. Answers emails in a timely manner. Has a lot of international/cultural experience and is inspirational. He just needs to find a better way to present himself and his classes.
He's extremely unclear in his assignments and a harsh grader with little to no feedback about why you received the poor grade you will inevitably receive. He knows exactly what he's talking about. But unfortunately, he expects you to, as well. Boring assignments he refuses to change and seemingly little care towards his students. I do not recommend
Okay, he is honestly a great professor. Little trick to passing: jot down notes without looking up, only look up when looking at photos (they'll show up on quizzes).. You'll thank me later. There is a basic guideline to every lecture, snap a photo of it on your phone. There are not slides that you copy from, strictly write importance of what's said
His design for the class was well designed, but it was his grading criteria for his assignments that often made it difficult to get a good grade in the class. He gave good feedback but it was hard to get anything higher than a B. Even with edits he found fault in everything I turned in. This class was way too stressful for 200 level course.
First off, I withdrew from this class because I thought it was too hard. No notes are taken, and he rambles a lot about things that don't really correlate with anything. Overall was too stressful and overwhelming for a 200 class. Do not recommend.
His biggest problem is how he delivers his lectures. He speaks to us as if he expects us to know already what he's talking about. There were also a few occasions where he could be really rude when people would ask questions. He also didn't publish grades so you never knew where you stood until the end. He ruined a good subject for me.
Teaches his class like a writing intensive but doesnt list it at a writing internsive so you only get credit for a liberal studies. His lectures are okay but not great. So many papers. You never take an exam its all 4-5 page papers and you have to read 4 books and write papers on two.
Finals are over, all grades are submitted, and my papers still haven't been graded. His class has been nothing but stressful. Not recommended unless you really want to stress out. The topic was really interesting but the grading and testing is just too messy. You'll be writing a lot as well-more than my writing intensive courses . Funny guy though!
Do yourself a favor and dont take a class with Baumler. Hes a good guy and hes pretty down to earth, but his teaching style just isnt it. He expects you to know everything hes talking about in his lectures right off the bat. Lots of papers and reading also. I do not recommend.
Baumler isn't the best at explaining his grading criteria and what he's looking for in assignments. HIST220 was presentation based, so this made the class very difficult. Especially since we'd only get up to 15 minutes worth of content to work off of for a whole week. Its a 1 credit class but that doesn't mean its an easy A.
Do not take him. He is by far the worst professor/teacher I have every had in my life. He put zero grades in until the end of the semester and I was sick to my stomach the whole entire time because I didn't know what grade I was going to have. I wish I would of dropped the class when I had a chance to.
He is a fun teacher who curses a lot but is a fair person. He is a fair grader and does expect you to pay attention, he does have a few papers, but none of them are particularly difficult and are graded fairly. He himself has a very easy-to-understand lecture and actually manages to make them engaging. He will pick on you if you slack off.
It is a lecture based class, but he does keep it fun by being a bit crazy. He's a unique and he's funny. Attendance isn't mandatory, but it is important to go to the class or you'll not know a thing. However, of you do miss a day you can always ask someone from the class for notes. As long as you do some light studying the quizzes a pretty easy.
Terrible at rubrics, organization, and overall likability. Always insults students. Do not take any of his classes.
Average class. Dr. Baumler is passionate about what he is teaching, but only teaches by lecture. Quiz every single weekend. Be prepared to hear him talk for the entirety of the semester, but it's best to pay attention and take notes. Have an understanding of the books as well, he throws questions from the books into quizzes and exams.
Rude, annoying, uncaring, sarcastic, and generally unlikeable. Does not seem to care about or enjoy teaching students and disparages the university and his students often.
Alan was a very funny and down to earth professor. You can tell that he truly is really passionate about what he is teaching. It is very lecture heavy, and you will have a quiz or exam every week following the lecture and the reading required that week. As long as you show up and kind of listen the quizzes and exams really aren't that difficult
I've seen people complain about Baumler, but in my experience he has been great. He tries to make class entertaining, and although his prompts to papers can be hard to understand the gist, he is very active on his email, and is willing to help anyone who has a question. He teases, but I wouldn't say he is mean.
Dr. Baumler provided me with an effective way of writing historical papers. He encouraged students to learn on their own, and provided feedback that required self-guidance. He does, however, give short time frames on deadlines. He is also very unprofessional and heavily curses. He is a tough grader, and getting a high A is very difficult.
Baumler is super sweet, and he makes his lectures funny. The only way you will fail is if you don't show up to the classes. There is a quiz every weekend, but they're very easy if you were in class and did the reading. You read one book and a few chapters from a comic book and watch one movie.
(HIST 212) so here's the thing, he is extremely good at his job, However, this is by far the most work I've had in a class, huge assignments. I gave him 4 instead of 5 quality because he assigned stuff during break and because of the lack of notice he gave for assignments. like I said great professor, don't take him if you have other hard classes
Swears in every sentence (very annoying), and assigns too much work for a history elective. I would not recommend him.
Dr. Baumler is very energetic in his lectures and is very knowledgeable. He will try to make things easier for you. His papers, though, are super long and you NEED to put the work in. The number one tip for any of his classes: send him rough drafts of your papers, he will be of great assistance!
Professor lacks communication skills via email. Comments on your assignments can be rude at times. LOTS of reading, be ready to read 50-75+ pages a week. Only grades are tests and discussions. Tests are multiple choice but each question is worth 10 points- they are also difficult to understand at times. All multiple choice tests graded manually.
