Horrible!
I really dont recommend taking this class. He doesn't communicate very well during his lectures and is relatively strict with attendance. He doesn't test, but does assign alot of essays which no one in my class does very well on.
hes not a good teacher. he lets his classes get too far off topic, leaving no time for the stuff we need to know. He gives LOTS of essays, and i have yet to completly answer one correctly. but if u ask he will email u a ok understanding of the question. hes super boring so bring a magazine. but he does make the BEST faces!!
Lectures are boring and he is not a fluent teacher. All the work in his class are essays and he tends to be picky grading them. If you don't answer essay questions with the examples he would use, most likely you won't get a good grade.

keeps saying um ah uh between every 3 words. makes faces and drops chalk everyday pulling you away from the lecture given.

He is an excellent teacher. He is new to SFCC. He just needs to add some more visual elements to his lectures to make them more interesting. He has never embarrassed anyone as far as I know,he would never point fingers or name names. He tries very hard.too many students take advantage of his kindness-very immature and disrespectful students!!
W/e man this guy is SO EASY. Yes, his lectures are HORRIBLE, but who cares, go to class, sleep, or dont go ot class, but like once a week, he never takes attendence. All the essays he will let you turn in early for a revision and he will always give you a chance to get a better grade. I wrote like, 6 2 page essays but thats it, no tests, TAKE HIM!
His class is super boring, but also super easy. Go to class occasionally, read the Alligator or something. All the grades are on essays that you really don't even have to turn in on time. Nice guy, obviously wants everyone to do well. Seriously, it's super super boring, but you'll get an A.
The whole class is essays. You don't even need to get a text book because he doesn't test on the material. Very harshly grades essays. I thought I understood the material very well but managed to get a B on almost all my essays. Lectures are boring, but he is a really nice guy and knows a lot. Injects his beliefs a lot in lecture.
Bad teacher. Knows what he 's talking about but if you dont write what he wants on his opinion question essays, you fail. Class is very very boring and all he assigns are essays. No tests ever. Dont even get the book, waste of money.
Alright. When he tells you to voice your opinions, he really wants you to voice HIS opinions and he will correct them.
He's awesome. Very smart and well spoken. His only tests are through take home essays. You can bet that you'll get a good grade as long as you uinderstand the general concept and write well.
You never have any work except take home essays. Unless you share the same opinions as him, then you wont do very well on them. This is the most boring I have EVER taken. I would not reccomend to take it for 2 hours and 45 minutes if you even have to take it at all. It was seriously a waste of my time.
Professor Beck is a good teacher. He provides good argument on both sides of subjects. I agree, sometimes he is a little hard to follow in lectures. I found that by using mostly your notes on your exam (shows you were not zoning out with everyone else) and provide a debate on both sides of the subject, you'll get a good grade.
No, you don't have to share the same opinion. We didn't see eye to eye on a few things, but I still got an A. He just wants us to show that we understand the subject. Just do your reading and write a good essay and you'll get an A. I recommend this class for people that have already taken ENC1102. You may still do o.k. if you haven't.
definitely the worst teacher i have ever had - in any school: high school or college. what is he thinking? horrible grader-very harsh. he doesn't really care about ur opinions. word of advice... agree with him. the teacher is always right. remember that. his opinions are important-not urs. so on essays, stick to his side of the argument.
All I can say is that you have to know how to write well. We are in COLLEGE! So this explains the prvious comment ;) It is not the point of view that he grades is your understanding, and how you convey the information back to him. He's GOOD!
Dr. Beck is a great teacher! You do NOT have to be on the same "side" as him at all! I am very right, and I still believe he is a wonderful teacher! He is not a harsh grader, but he does make sure you cover all points that he wants covered. He helps you in ever possible way and it more than awesome to argue politics with in class.
Takes teaching personally, don't be late/absent. Very easy, just know how to write an essay well. Read a little, it will help. And remeber this is not the most scintillating of subjects, so fight the boredom, go to class.
very liberal, but never judges if you dont think the same way he does. I am very conservative and him and i get along great. loves for u to email him too, it counts as class participation. can be monotoned sometimes but all around is a great guy!
Being a political class Beck's Liberalism became apparent, but no bias ever became apparent. He will often play devil's advocate in discussions which can result in him arguing a liberal view, but he only does this when the discussion falters between students. You don't need the text book, so save the money. All the work is essays and quizzes. Fun.

I hate history so i dreaded his class but he was really nice & very understanding. I loved the political debates we had. Just pay attention & read the book &the tests will be easy. The essays suck though, he likes to assign them 5 total. The first few I did okay but just cover all the points, also you can email them late with no real penalty.
He had no clue what he was going to teach. We couldn't study from the book cause he didn't use it. We went into test litteraly having no idea what would be there cause he refused to use study guides! Horrible, just a terrible teacher.
Ok, he does have a weird elbow thing going on, but he is a great teacher. Essays are easy, most make a B or higher. Two tests, mid term and final. He is an odd guy, but when you get past that his class is informative and interesting. Requires weekly reading of the NY Times, and an easy news summary of 3 stories. Highly recommended.
Everyday you want to fall asleep in class. I never was able to keep up nor understand him. Bad class and bad teacher. Do not take him.
Sometimes he rambles, but I had a good time in class. Just do the readings and pay attention and you will get a good grade.
Very good teacher. Tests are multiple choice. Little odd, but who isn't at Santa Fe. If you do the assigned reading, the class is a breeze.
Whoever said this guy is a good teacher is CRAZY!! I have made honor roll every semester, but this class is impossible to get good grades in. The tests are so confusing, the study guides barely help, and he practically writes an essay of his own just telling you how wrong your own essay is. He is a jerk and has no clue how to teach! DO NOT TAKE!!!
this guy plays favorites and grades unfairly. DO NOT take this class...you will regret it, i promise. he is uninteresting and boring as hell. there has got to be better government teachers, search for them. i wish somebody would have given an accurate description of this guy on here before i signed up...BIG MISTAKE.
I had Mr. Beck for a summer American National Government class, and I liked the class. I am not big on government or politics, but I had no trouble following along with what he was saying. If you're not a political science major, take the class in the summer - six weeks of long classes go by much faster than 16 weeks of long classes.
My god this guy is so one-sided it is unbelievable. If you are looking for a well balanced professor for politics, this is not the guy. His essay assignments are ridiculous, and his tests are so mis-worded, its amazing he can grade them. I do not recommend this professor. Look else where.
DONT TAKE THIS CLASS! Alan Beck is a horrible, ignorant idiot. He lectures from a boring 17th century textbook in old english, expecting you to understand a word he is saying. Then, he gives you about a week to type a 3 page paper on the person you "learned" about in class. Based off of what he lectures, it's nearly impossible to even write 1 parag
This class is easy. If you pay attention you pass. You have idiots who are not interested in the subject and take the class. He does a great job. His exams are not easy, but if you read the material you won't have a problem. Good Class. Great Teacher.
Great teacher. While he's difficult, I can appreciate it to keep retards out of the major. Expect to come to class to get a decent grade. His tests are difficult and he talks to students as if they are adults. If you're not ready to attend class regularly and have little interest in learning then you should bugger off to another major.
You need to show up and speak, first of all. He goes off topic, but it's all in good fun. Others have called it boring, but in which other class does the professor simply give the students the floor and let them duke it out? He's definitely a liberal, but plays devil's advocate for all intents and purposes. Take him- very passionate.
Dr. Beck is a very inteligent man. He is well informed and you will learn a lot. He is kind of loopy bc he is so smart but its cool and he is interesting. His power points are a little unclear. Not real easy, but you'll learn.
Beck's class is usually entertaining. The students debate and he is happy for opinions and interaction. We had 4 papers for 40% of our grade. The tests were pretty hard. He gives study guides, but that dont cover everything he tests on. He also gives 5 question reading and current event quizzes that are difficult. His personality is distracting.
The trick to this class is to do the reading and attend class. He's the sponsor for the Santa Fe Dems but works very hard and does a good job of staying neutral. The class is entertaining and the professor is a good guy.
I LOVE THIS GUY! he IS 100% left wing but tries to not be too one sided in class. very smart guy, knows what hes talking about and is definitely up to date on politics. provokes debates/participation as often as he can. tests arent hard IF YOU DO THE READINGS! provides study guides for each exam
Needs to figure out how to prepare students toward a test, instead of constant rambling. I try to stay interested but I get lost about 25 minuts into class, everytime. He needs to maybe throw in a handout at that point and have us look some stuff up in our book.
i absolutely hated this class, but Dr Beck is hilarious, and a great guy. He's definitely liberal, and doesnt deny it, but isnt critical of anyone who isnt. he's kind & takes good care of his students.
Dr. Beck makes you read. I finally nailed a quiz by reading the material until it sunk in. This will help me on the next test and has helped me in my other classes. His lectures are on his site and he offers the class full participation. Ask him a question and he will educate you. Take this class. Print his p-points and use them during lectures.
Professor Beck is a great person, but he is not what I would call a great professor. It seems like he talks in circles, and in class discussions go no where. Our first test was so bad he had to drop it! So I do not recommend him for State and local.
Alan knows what he's talking about. As long as you have a class that openly discusses the topics with him you should be fine, I've taken worse classes. At the beginning of the semester I thought for sure that I was going to drop this class, but I stuck through it and I'm glad I did. Plus he has a website with all of the powerpoint notes on it.
Beck's class was interesting. I didn't do too well on the tests but scored pretty high on the papers. He grades the papers pretty fairly as long as you dont hand him a pile of crap. His tests are hard so read the material. Nutshell: stay up on the chapters and get into the class. Dr. Beck is a smart dude and very easy to talk to.
Political theory was not an easy class. However, if you have problems, talk with Dr. Beck to try to resolve it. He is a really nice guy and super smart. If you ask him a question, you will always get a thoughtful answer. Really up to date politically. He's liberal but his class is not. I reccomend his Comparative Politics course.
Dr. Beck is a really nice person, and def. knows a lot about the material. The class should be easy, but in reality it is pretty hard to get an A. there are 5 papers, and 3 tests which do NOT follow the study guides given. Wouldn't recommend to someone looking for an A, but the class was actually interesting.
Awesome teacher! He really cares about his students. All he wants to see in your essays is that you UNDERSTAND the concepts portrayed by the various philosophers...so listen in class and do research outside of class and you'll pass with an A++. Oh..STAPLE YOUR PAPERS!
One of the best prof. on campus! I he is so interesting and creates a great learning environment that is open for debate and discussion. though I must warn conservatives before entering his class, hes a really smart guy.
Great Guy. Read the book for quizzes - questions are usually not very general not too detailed - he'll answer your questions, sometimes more then you needed to know - very smart, very liberal, very helpful, easy class SUPER EASY if your already interested- grades liberal TAKE HIM
u know, anybody can check out this website and rate any prof.Who would say any bad things to one if s/he is really that great? So don't u believe in those fake comments if u are being sensible.BEWARE OF THIS HORRIBLE GUY!!!I just don't know why he is still teaching at santa fe..Don't blame anybody if u don't take advice and regret afterward!!
Good teacher, i think he grades a little harsh but it is possible to get an A on one of his essays. You also have to do reading and stay up to date with current events... if you just want an easy 'A' don't take him but if you don't care about your grade or work hard he's great.
Beck is a great guy, super liberal but he's very open to any opinions. Big debate class really. If you read the book and go to class to ask questions the 9 essays will be easy. Not a super tough grader, just wants to know that you've got a general understanding of the material. Staple your papers, participate in discussions, and it's a great class.
He's a pretty cool guy, the class is much more entertaining if you participate in the discussion. Most of class he goes on tangents, so there is some material you need to learn on your own. There are a lot more papers than I would have liked to do, but if you are really interested in politics he is a pretty good professor.
This guy's awesome. I really enjoyed his class a lot. If you pay any kind of attention at all during classtime, you'll come out with an A. I'm taking his class next semester because I enjoyed him so much.
He's awesome! I thought I would hate this class but I find it really interesting. You write a lot but it beats having to take tests. He's extremely intelligent and fun to talk to. I will be taking more of his classes in the future.
Great teacher. The way he taught this class may not be for everyone, but I liked it a lot: 9 essays and class participation; no other grades. The essays are all based on class discussion which is based on the book. He DOES have a liberal 'bias', though not blindly:he treats every argument with the same dignity and respect, regardless of your views.
WORST PROFESSOR EVER!!! The WHOLE class is based soley on his opinions on the government and if you don't participate ur screwed! His opinions matter more than the facts && the essays are wrong if he doesn't like you && if it's not his opinion. I'm an A student and to pass with a C+, DO NOT TAKE HIM!! YOU WILL REGRET EVERY WAKING MOMENT!
Great professor! Plays a little fast and loose with his grading style, so if you participate in discussions, attend class, adhere to the syllabus, and are enthusiastic about learning political science, you will do well. Has a PHD in Pol Theory: bonus. Has a liberal bias, but he is incredibly fair in his arguments as long as you are respectful.
What to say about Dr.Beck..well, he's a cool guy although there are major issues with him. It's your call whether you take him or not, but a Poli-Sci major will HAVE to take him since he's the only one teaching politheory.I know political Theory like the back of my hand. I had issues in which I missed class, made up all essays(9)& still got a D.
Be prepared to read most of the text book, the NY Times everyday(you WILL be quizzed), write 2-3 3pg papers, and to read a book outside of class and write a 5pg paper. It's a lot of work but he does encourage conversation in class which can be fun.
Lots of writing. He grades papers based on if he agrees with your opinion. So make sure you say what he wants to hear and not challenge his political views. Kind of a jerk, makes rude comments, but entertaining.
He is an interesting teach, quite the character. Class is interesting. Expect papers and critical grading. Currect events on the entire newspaper every other week. Textbook quizzes and readings, better read thoroughly. Get on his good side. The class is challenging but if you email/talk to him, he's understanding and helpful.
He is a bit of a fast talker, doesnt really know what he's talking about sometimes, doesnt keep up with attendance, but other than that if you love political science, then take him. Just expect a lot of papers!, and based on his opinion.
You'll have to read roughly 300 pages of political theorists' works, which isn't all that bad, but the fact that he simply put extended quotes from the texts, read them aloud, and then looked at us and said "ok?" didn't help much. Sort of gives off a superior vibe a la "You mean you don't know the history of Libya's political system?"
Hard grader on papers, grades based on his views so watch out if you don't agree with him. Quizzes each week for the reading. Fast talker, can say funny things at times but other times it is impossible to keep up.
If you enjoy the subject the class is easy, if you don't it can be hard. Taken him three times and I've gotten B+ or A's every time with little to no studying. Few papers over the semester, but they are not that hard.
I took his honors class, and he was not helpful at all. We would 'discuss' current matters during class time, and that didn't count towards our grade at all. In the rare event of him actually teaching, you really do learn things, but again, this hardly ever happens. His review for the final was helpful, but that was pretty much it.
He's very socially awkward. He spends way too much time talking about the simplest points. The lectures don't have any relevance to the quizzes each week or the tests. Plus, he?s a democrat and will bash and blame republicans when the opportunity rises. Even though I received a B, I wouldn?t take his class again.
Terrible teacher, very strict grader. Rambles during his powerpoints and his tests have nothing to do with the presentations. Extremely opinionated liberal with a horrible attitude. Avoid at all costs.
He's a horrible professor, he will literally fail you if he wants to. He offers no help, even if you go to his office. He is very biased and you will fail his class if you do not have the same opinion as him. He is also unfair, and treats some students way worse than others. AVOID AT ALL COSTS.
This guy is the worst professor I have ever experienced. His classes are extremely dull and filled with Beck's rambling and useless opinions. Do not even consider signing up for his class, trust me.
A poor surgeon hurts 1 person at a time. A poor teacher hurts 130. feel like failing? take his class.
He is a liberal democrat. If you are not, make sure you don't make any mention otherwise in your papers. He takes away from your grade for presenting opinions that are conservative. His grading is very subjective. He has favorites. He is a good professor but sways his grading TOO much on his own personal opinions.
He doesn't care about most of his students. He for sure has favorites and even when they talk he looks away and rolls his eyes while they talk. His grading is so subjective that you have no way of getting a curved grade. If you text in class, he won't tell you, but he sees you and will grade you based on how much you made him mad. Don't take it.
AVOID THIS TEACHER LIKE THE PLAGUE!
He is a solid teacher and if you ask him to review an essay and see if he will raise the grade he will.If a quiz has 6 questions you only need 5 right for a 100.I have seen the kids in the class before mine. Multiple were caught copying others work.Do your work.Study and ask questions. You will pass.
He is very unfair and will single you out. Makes rude comments during class directed towards people he doesn't like. Take him if you feel like failing.
I really enjoyed Professor Beck's class. He is very liberal and can back up his stances. He knows his politics. He is a tough grader on papers and his tests are worded in a very confusing way. Despite this, I would take him again. His class was always interesting but perhaps this is because I enjoyed the subject matter.
Really good professor. But you must be willing to jump into class discussions on your own. He's a liberal, but welcomes dissenting opinions if you can support your thoughts critically. Dr. Beck is a bit quirky, but funny and easy to get along with. There is substantial reading in this course, but it is all gone over thoroughly in class.
PROF. BECK IS AN INTERESTING PERSON BUT WHEN IT COMES TO TEACHING HE'S VERY MONOTONE. YOU DO NEED TO READ THE CHAPTERS ASSIGNED AND THE NEWSPAPER FOR CURRENT EVENTS. THE CLASS IS VERY BORING AND HE DOESN'T STAY ON TRACK WITH THE SYLLABUS SO YOU CAN END UP FALLING BEHIND. TRUST I KNO...GOODLUCK!!!
Professor Beck is very serious about his topic. He is very proud as well. He grades all assignments harshly. There are quizzes every other week. If you forget anything, you might fail. He's very monotonous and imperfect. His PowerPoints are years old. Read the book & read the paper.
Class is very boring, even if you are a political major. Took the Summer session class. Failed it. Do miss class. Does not accept emailed work. Show up late and you are likely to miss a quiz as it is not a set thing, may be at beginning of class or end. Expected to read paper daily. Good Luck.
Class is terrible. Don't recommend. Rambles every class with personal opinions. Quizzes are unpredictable and don't match anything taught in class along with the tests. No grade structure. Won't know what you get until the final grade is out. Very biased. Impossible to take notes during class. Its basically up to you to read and pass the class.
19 page syllabus.IMPOSSIBLE to satisfy.Expects you to understand everything on your own.Hates opposing positions.Grades based on favorites.Rambles entire class about personal views.Doesn't keep up with syllabus & piles on writing assignments in addition to weekly quizzes and difficult test.NIGHTMARE of a professor of a potentially good class.
This teacher gave me a F because I am republican. He is very lazy and only shows you powerpoints, he made up ten years ago. If you feel like failing take this guy.
Dr. Beck was intimidating at first but he makes his expectations very clear. HIS MAIN PRIORITY IS STUDENT PARTICIPATION. If you ask questions, participate in class discussion, email him when you have concerns, and HAVE AN OPEN MIND you will do well. I am VERY conservative but my curiosity to learn earned me an A. I learned a lot in his class.
Dr. Beck can go off on tangents at times, but it's because he wants his class to be engaged in the subject matter. If you have a talkative classmate, try to rein them in. That said:the book is your friend, the news is your friend; visit them often.
I liked Beck's class. It was informative and interesting. At first he seems kind of kooky, but he's a really smart guy despite the weird syllabus restrictions/guidelines he has. He was really helpful. He expects lots of effort, so use lots of citing in your papers. Stay informed on current events. Essays were easy, quizzes were easy. Don't stress.
I did not enjoy this class. He's condescending, his lecture style is boring, and quizzes and tests are more based on reading (and lots of it) than anything else. 4 medium length essays, a lot of reading, and difficult tests. He does show a liberal bias but doesn't unfairly target the right IMO. Not the worst class, but I do not recommend.
Beck is passionate about what he teaches, which I find important in an instructor. He grades papers critically, though thoroughly. He genuinely wants his students to get the picture. His syllabus might be a little much, but he is understanding and fair. I enjoyed his class and I'd recommend it to anyone truly interested in political philosophy.
Beck is a great teacher. He's a bit quirky, but he always stays on topic. The essays can be difficult, but if you take notes on what he says, then it shouldn't be a problem. No tests or quizzes either only essays.
very liberal, very one sided, you will not score well if you don't agree with him, might hurt your feelings, has had complaints to administration about his harsh opinions, if you are strongly republican and voice this opinion in class then he will not like you and make you feel terrible about yourself. I DO NOT RECOMMEND at all
2nd week and I'm already regretting taking this class. I looked forward to learning about politics, but now, not so much. This professor does not help, he belittles. Make sure to read the entire syllabus, and try out what he considers political news in the NYT you have to subscribe to. Don't take this class unless you have studied politics already.
Horrible Online teacher, I took this class online and I regret it!!! He is difficult and not clear. Tests and quizzes are not compatible with his power points or notes. Don’t take this class with him unless you don’t have any options.
VERY hard professor, syllabus is confusing as to what he considers political articles in NYT. You MUST read the book notes and PPs!! Very hard class to take, a lot of reading. If you email him, he will answer your question and or help, but make sure you read everything he put out to make sure it hasn't been covered already. He loves debating!!!
This class was intense to say the least. There is a lot of reading to cover in a short period of time. In addition to reading the textbook, student's are required to read the NY Times daily as well. This class is any thing, but easy ant do not encourage students to take it. The test are timed and so are all the quizzes
Class was typically boring , he would attempt to make it discussion based, but was never successful. His tests are tough considering I'm not a strong test taker and never seemed to study enough to come out with a decent grade. Really subjective with his grading of the 5 essays that count for 40% of class grade. Quizzes were 6 questions and easy.
Pretty average professor for me. He is really passionate about political science but isn't too interesting if you're not into the subject. Can be forgetful at times which is a bit annoying. Wants you to succeed. He is liberal, but doesn't show too much bias. Textbook is necessary if you want to pass the weekly quizzes.
Beck is a very smart man & knows what he is talking about. However he is an extremely tough grader I got lower grades on my papers then I honestly believed what I deserved. His exams are tough as well especially if you have no interest in the topic. He has a quiz every week on the chapter of that week so be prepared to read lot.
Doctor Beck knows what he is talking about, but to keep it short, he expects college level work from you. This is not a course you take to get an "easy A".
great class... took in summer A... well worth it.
If you are here you know what it's liked to get sacked my a teacher. This is one of those classes. After all the money and time you devote to school why come this far to chance losing your hard earned GPA to a basic subject? Very nice. Relaxed. Very approachable. Intelligent. Good speaker. Impossible grader. Do yourself a favor and keep looking.
Expect lectures most classes. You need to have the textbook to be able to read the chapters for the quizzes. He gives out three papers during the course and can be a tough grader. Very boring class and can be confusing when he forgets to tell you due dates or gets off topic.
Dr. Beck is your typical college professor. He loves the class that he teaches. Honestly this class was very easy as long as you complete your reading each week and take notes during class. As long as you listen during class and read the chapters (and take notes) then this class was easy.
Did a good job during lectures, despite the word "um" being said at least 500 times a lecture. You can definitely tell he is liberal, seeing as he throws shade to anything Republican. Nice guy though, and a good grader. All in all, I didn't mind him too much. Good guy with good intentions.
Unless you previously know everything about government I would not take this class tests are extremely hard 2 discussions 2 quizs hw due on Sunday essays every week he's a jerk in discussions
You can tell he's a great guy but this is the most boring class in the world. Also he talks nonstop in a very monotone voice. NOT an easy A. Assigns HW right away , can be overwhelming
He is a very smart man and passionate about what he teaches, however he is not very helpful to students who do not share his passion in American Politics. I like his personality, but I spent more time googling my questions and teaching myself than being able to get the information from him and his grading system is very confusing.
I took this professor for an online course. He was incredibly unorganized with his material and was constantly rotating due dates. Furthermore, he was incredibly bias, often expressing his political views in test in quizzes. There were many mistakes in his materials and I would strongly not recommending taking him. Find another professor.
You will learn the tools it takes to survive in society. He loves the New York Times. The sources cited need to come from NYT. DO NOT TEXT in his class. Most important, show him respect! You need this credit in order to graduate with any AA's and AS's... DO NOT WORRY, you will be fine..
Terrible lectures, both disorganized and extraordinarily boring style. Highly selective in terms of content (i.e. what he thinks should be taught in line w/his political views - and I'm on the same side with him on many), with a clear focus on pet issues rather than critical thinking or understanding subject. Doesn't know how to teach material.
Dr. Beck is very passionate about what he does. He's very knowledgable in his field of study and rewards students who pay attention and engage in educational debates in class. He gets off topic easily, he's VERY liberal, and most of your grades are from exams and papers. I would recommend Dr. Beck if you're passionate about political science.
Professor Beck is awesome and I thoroughly enjoyed the class. There were 3 papers/3 tests, no homework beyond that. Make sure you're active in class discussions, but it's not hard, as there are so many topics in politics we talk about. Beck is very liberal, shows in his lectures, I share the same opinions so I found it great and humorous.
I wish I had found Dr. Beck sooner! His lectures are matter of fact and he's very insightful. Expect quizzes on your reading, do research for your papers. If you do respectable work, you'll get a good grade. He absolutely recognizes student effort. I would absolutely recommend this professor if you're engaged, critical, and appreciate discussion.
If you are not Interested in Political Science and are just taking it to get credit then he is not for you!!! I was in a class full of political science majors and was unable to stay engaged because i was always being out talked. You have to read A LOT. Self taught in my opinion and his favorites are the PS majors. 0 teaching during class!!!
terrible teacher!!! he constantly expresses his liberal views and spends most of class time bashing republicans. he doesn't seem to follow a class plan that most teachers do and he gets off topic very easily. He says the word "um" several times every minute and takes awhile to collect his thoughts. wouldn't recommend this teacher to anyone!!!
If you want to go into a government class looking for a professor that's fairly neutral, keep looking. From the second day of class you realize how liberal his views are, most current event classes we bash how bad republicans are doing. That being said if you can bare to listen to his biased lectures the class is pretty simple
A lot of reviews are complaining about Dr. Beck having a liberal bias. This is just untrue. If you actually bother to do the reading, and participate in class, you'll find that his lectures and discussions are all logical extensions of the course material. If you go to class unwilling to learn and challenge your views, you'll have a bad time
Professor Beck is great. This is my second time taking him (previous was Comparative Poli) and I was glad I did. There's usually a quiz once a week, either news or current events, 3 papers, 3 tests. Class is basically all lectures. Prof is glad to engage in conversation with students about the topic, allows everyone to have an opinion. Funny guy.
Dr. Beck is a tough professor if you don't pay attention or participate. Yes, he's liberal but I'm not. In my class there were tons of boys and he wanted girls to participate as well so it worked to my advantage. Just show up, do the readings, quizzes and make sure you pay attention to lectures because exams questions can often come from lecture.
Dr. Beck is a wonderful professor, he is very understanding and works with each and every student that he has. He does tailor his lectures around his political views, but he doesn't let that influence the actual graded work. Again, he is very understanding and will work with you as long as you DO YOUR READING! DO YOUR READING! DO YOUR READING! )
I was excited to take this class, but I really wish I'd taken a different professor. He knows his stuff for sure, so he's great if you're majoring in political science, but the majority of his lectures are based around his left-leaning views.
Test and papers are all based off of his political opinion. If you are a hard core left winger then you will have an easy A but if you are a conservative in order to, at best, pass this class you must neglect your political views and attempt to think like one of them.
Three tests and three essays. Tests are based off his lectures which are opinionated and hard to follow. He grades the essays pretty forgivingly. Class was an interesting topic but I wouldn't recommend taking it with him. Nice guy just very boring.
Beck is an extremely knowledgeable, quirky Professor. His analysis and power points are fairly easy to understand, and are accesible on his canvas page. He also gives you the reading materials in PDF, which is nice. However, much of Professor Beck's lectures lean left, and he hates conservatives, and ergo hated me. 2/5 stars for this bias.
Quite possibly the most knowledgeable and easy to understand professor that I have ever head. Yes, his discussions on currents events lean left, but he teaches actual class objectively. He is readily available outside of class for students who have questions or just want to philosophize. Very nice and understanding. 7 essays, but they're not bad.
good professor overall but really unclear about due dates. My only issue was the due dates. He mentions assignments twice. Once, the day he assigns them and again the day they are due.
He lectures and gets off topic easily. He stares at you for a very long time. You have random quizzes due online. In addition to reading the textbook he also wants you to subscribe to the New York Times and read articles that I honestly never found online. To me he is very unorganized.
Alan is a good guy. Class discussions were always pretty interesting. Just do the readings and turn stuff in on time and you'll be fine. If you have to take this class take it with him.
Professor Beck is good at teaching and really likes to ask the class questions. If you're shy, you better get ready to break out of your shell. He explains the concepts pretty well and is usually non-biased, but you can tell he leans to the left in his politics. Overall a good professor, would take again.
Besides most of what he's says being filled with "um's" his lectures were ok. He never gave clear deadlines and announced deadlines the day of. Unless you asked while in class you will be SOL. I had ONE mishap in a paper and gave me a C and also wrote he would have given me an A if it wasn't for the one word.
Good teacher, nice guy with good intentions, pretty lenient with grading and not a lot of exams but a lot of weekly quizzes and assignments due online outside of class. Overall not very hard and overall a pretty manageable class.
He is very intelligent. His lectures are usually pretty straight forward his lecture is online so I never took notes in class. The study guides he provides online are no help because the test is so much more in depth but other than that the class wasnt too bad. Lots of reading!
Dr. Beck definitely knows what he is talking about. Despite this, he is very monotone and gets off topic very quickly. You can immediately tell his left-winged political views and he has no problem bashing Republicans. A LOT of reading. Very hard to stay focused during class. Definitely makes you work for your grade.
Lectures from beginning of class to end of class, even holding you for an extra 2-3 minutes which is be a big deal if you have to rush to your next class or work after. Lectures are extremely long and boring with typically around 80 slides filled from top to bottom with every piece of information possible. Very difficult to reach outside of class.
I really enjoyed this class, Dr. Beck is very respectable and he is very informed on certain issues that are going on today. His political ideologies are a bit left but that is prevalent with almost any Political Science professor. He is a great person overall and I would recommend his CPO2001 class to any student interested in politics.
Terrible. Do not take if you want your GPA to drop. Test are hard, and he grades essays very harshly. Also super rude and will embarrass you for not understanding certain material. Also talks in circles during lectures, so you never know what he is saying half the time. Beware of the old man who hates his life so he makes yours miserable.
He is not a good teacher. He is rude and grades harshly, and does not even pass out extra credit. Its like he makes this class to be more difficult than it should be on purpose. His lectures talk about so many things but only a few are on tests and he just isnt understanding or caring. Just terrible.
I took Beck for CPO, Theory, and an independent study class where we did Constitutional Law. Beck's biggest asset is he makes his students think critically, a skill the other Poli Sci professors do not have. Go to his office hours and participate and you will get a good grade. PS New kids- Beck is advisor for Model Senate. Forshee does Model UN.
Professor Beck is a caring person. However, this class was hard for me. There are three main essays you will write during the term. Every other week, you will have to do a current event and submit it on canvas. You will have to use the NY Times for your current event. The tests are hard but overall tolerable. I hope this helps!
Mr. Beck is an average professor. His biggest flaw is his inability to talk about politics as an independent. He is very liberal leaning, so being conservative can make you feel alienated within the class. 3 Essays over the semester, they are hard to understand. Go to office hours and he'll explain them better. Overall, not bad, but not great.
This professor might have been the worst professor I've ever met. His lectures are so boring and are useless. His study guides for the exam are somewhat helpful, but not really. You have three major essays to write which are not that bad, but his grading skills are very hard. He has two exams as well. I would def not recommend this professor.
He is a sweet guy but is not a good teacher. Possibly the most boring lectures I've ever sat through. He doesn't teach whatsoever, just kinda mumbles and rambles. Get ready to listen to the words "um" and "uh" more than any topic hes covering. Hard exams and a harsh grader on papers. Bring a laptop, do other classwork, and go home and read the book
If you have the chance to take any other class. take it. do not take his class. his powerpoints are basically off of Wikipedia. his tests are impossible. his study guides do not help at all. there are three papers that are impossible to do good on. his grade book is incorrect all the time, his lectures are the most boring thing I have ever witnessed
Great professor. I don't understand people saying that the tests were hard on here. I have had him for two classes and the tests are literally the easiest of any class I have ever taken. I usually finish in about 10 minutes and get close to 100. Definitely liberal leaning, but is very open to other points of view if they are well formulated.
Stay away! Rambles off of lectures, is extremely tough with grading, and is VERY biased. Test are pretty difficult as well. Overall not a pleasant experience and I would recommend taking another professor if possible.
Had him for POS2041 & his lectures are so boring if you're not interested in politics. There's HW due every week from the TB or from nytimes articles. 3 essays that he grades heavy on, but if you have questions he will give you a detailed response. 3 exams on canvas, you must study for it. His study guide is questions that werent that helpful to me
Professor Beck is a nice person, just not a great professor. He rambles on in his lectures and talks about things that arent related to the topic. His tests are hard and very wordy. The questions are hard to understand. He also is a tough grader with essays.
this professor has a very hard time teaching as an independent and will let students talk others down if it pertains to what he believes in. Lectures are very very long and don't have too much to do with exams. Is very critical when it comes to essays and will say everything is wrong but still give you a decent grade on it if written well.
Hes not awful but not great his class is very very boring hard to pay attention. I believe hes unbaised hes open to any discussion or debate and some days were fun but only a few. FYI i am not a political science student so i was very intreasted in this class if you are a political studies student it may be different.
Hes a wonderful person and very knowledgeable in his field. His lectures are long and could be boring for those not interested in the subject. Overall, very easy going and for sure wants you to succeed.
Professor Beck is a pretty solid government professor. He does tend to ramble a little about the topic but it's more so giving examples of what the topic is so we can understand better. He is a caring professor and will help out if there is an issue with submission or possibly needing more time depending on situation. Overall, I enjoyed the class
10/10 AMAZING!! Best professor I've ever had. Sure he talks quite a bit in lectures, but that's because he's actually teaching. The more that students participate, the more interesting the class is. I genuinely felt heard and respected in his classroom.
He is very essay heavy. If you miss so many classes your grade dropped but I ending up missing more than I should have because he was constantly trashing Republicans and Catholics which I am both. I couldn't take the hatred by also the classmates so the points weren't that necessary for me. The lectures were also very hard to listen to from boredem
I would not recommend taking this professor's class was very boring he doesn't move during the lecture he sits the entire time. attendance is mandatory and he's an extremely hard grader the class average for the last essay was an F. if your looking to not fall asleep during a lecture take someone else
if it isn't his opinion it's wrong. He lowered my grade on an essay because my opinion was wrong. Rude.
Professor Beck is definitely an interesting man. His lectures are very long and he tends to get very caried away during his lectures. Lots of reading, 2-3 assignments every week. There are 2 essays that can be tricky. He is very kind, strong passion for what he does and is always there to help you do your best in the class, and communicates!!!!!!!!
Dr. Beck has authority on U.S. domestic policy and government. His lectures can sometimes become a bit sidetracked at times, but participation during lectures is definitely recommended! Dr. Beck is great with communication. If you email him he will definitely get back to you quickly. If you show initiative he will be more then willing to help.
At first, I was iffy about the class because it was very lecture heavy and sometimes hard to keep up, but Professor Beck was an angel. Someone close to me had passed away in the middle of the semester and he was extremely accommodating and caring, he honestly has been one of the BEST professor I have encountered so far. I highly recommend.
hard to follow lectures, large work load, always behind on the schedule but still assigns test on material we haven't covered
worst teacher ive had here, very tough grader. quizzes every week and they can be 5 questions with only 6 mintues to finish the whole quiz. 3 essays about amending the constitution. lots of reading. lots of lectures. never finishes class ontime. i would give a 0 if i could
Great Professor, but a bit disorganized when it comes to lectures. If you are a leftist, you'll probably like him but if not you're in for a long semester. For my semester there were 3, 3.5-page papers due throughout the semester, some of them due 2 to 3 days before exams. Exams are pretty long and made by him, so lectures are important.
Essays follow: "What should the 28th Amendment be"? Don't recommend rushing these. He grades fairly and leaves great feedback. 5Q Quizzes are a lot of reading, but easy. Tests are 50Q+, Average Difficulty. Fine if you pay casual attention and have notes to study with prior. Left-leaning, but open-minded. Class is overtime by 5 mins max.
I enjoyed Professors Becks POS2041 class this semester, although it is lecture heavy. The quizzes throughout the course are relatively straightforward if you at least skim through the text. He also does give extra credit opportunities which were very beneficial.
He speaks a little slowly and he makes a lot of puns and dad-jokes, but he has a huge heart and is so open to hearing student perspectives. He does discuss the hard topics from our history, something others can be scared to do, but it's authentic and sincere. His educational background is in welfare/ reform. He cares, he's genuine. XC is 1/2 grade.
class was kinda boring but he was a sweet man!
Dr. Beck is a great professor. He is very lecture and note taking heavy, but that is the best way I learn so I didn't mind. His assignments are not hard at all, but there are 3 essays to do during the semester. If you are ever going through something and can't get an essay in on time, he is super willing to work with you. I would highly recommend.
Professor Beck's American National Government course was very difficult. But he is a good teacher and enjoys having discussion/debates with students. He gives many extra credit opportunities and is very fair with his grading. He is very left leaning as far as politics go but is open to hearing other viewpoints. Classes are heavily lecture based.
Very kind professor, however classes are exclusively lectures from slides which is somewhat boring. Main annoyance were the two 5 question 9 min quizzes every week (one about current events and other class material), and three pretty large essays. All exams were online which was good. Professor is very forgiving, cares about students and material.
I despised this class. I dreaded going to it. The lectures were incredibly boring. He tests over the lecture with his own questions, but the questions were weirdly worded. There was extra credit on the tests. He also grades every essay and written question off his own bias and opinions. Good luck in this class if you still choose to take it.
The lectures are dreadfully boring. He is biased when grading papers. He is not afraid to let his political biases be known every couple minutes. Find another professor if you can.
Lectures are extremely boring, very opinionated, and biased. Just don't.
A lot of extra credit opportunities, two large essays, and online tests, every week there is a current events quiz and a chapter quiz. The lectures are long and boring bc Dr Beck looses his train of thought and ends up mumbling a lot. everything is on canvas and very well organized by week. definitely biased and grades accordingly.
hes nice but his lectures are very unorganized, he doesnt explain other assignments except current events. he takes forever grading. if you dont know a lot about politics or care or are truly involved i wouldnt recommend him. his study guides suck. hes nice though if political science is your career field take his class but if not dont!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I took his class during the Fall Semester. Personally I can't learn from word heavy lectures. He had a tendency to ramble and we were often off course and had quizzes due before even having the lecture. There is reading that is crucial for tests. Besides that you can tell he wants his students to be informed and that I can appreciate.
Dr. Beck is a great professor, I had him for both CPO 2001 and POS 2042, and in both classes he was great. Do your reading and you'll be fine, if you're still having a rough time office hours and/or email should help a lot. Only cons are attendance is mandatory, and reading is a very large part of the class.
Truly, he does seem like a nice guy But I despised his class, the lectures were the boring and he often went off topic and debated w/ students. Two tests online, final in person. Two essays and weekly quizzes on current events. I could've done more but still this class was miserable. Should've dropped. Attendance mandatory, grade depends on it.
This class was just the professor pushing his political beliefs. I was looking forward to learning about government, but he constantly made very biased comments in support of being a democrat. I'm not a democrat or republican; however, I felt the need to lean left in order to get the best possible grade.
Lectures can be a bit disorganized, but using Unstuck ai alongside the textbook helps make the content more engaging. Grading is fair overall, just stay on top of the weekly assignments.
I chose to take American Government during the election year. Can you see the foreshadowing? I thought I would be learning about the process of our government, not political debate. Not only political debate but political debate from a biased perspective. Then ask us questions that would out our political party in class and debate it. L teacher.
By far the worst professor I've ever had. He stutters a lot, "um, um," and he just yaps. Goes over the class time. Extremely left leaning and tries to push it onto his students. Takes forever to grade. If you take this class, make sure you have a laptop so you can play games because it's so boring. And bro is mad strict about attendance
Do not take this course with this professor. Very wishy washy with his lectures, no real topics are gone over in class.
All he does is talk nonsense. I haven't learned a single thing this semester. Don't take him.
Not very helpful.
Dr. Beck is a very knowledgeable and approachable professor. The lectures are interesting, he asks very thought-provoking questions and has a good sense of humor. The PowerPoint presentations are useful. We learned a lot about the Constitution and the history of the American Government. Very interested in taking his Comparative Politics class next!
Dr. Beck is.. fine. He won't go one lecture without talking about how severely Jewish people are oppressed. Nice guy, and a fair grader, but lets his personal opinions interfere with the quality of his class, and goes over class time/has disorganized lectures. I wouldn't take him again.
Easy class but lectures were really bad. I couldn't pay attention and got nothing from them. There's 3 papers but they are pretty easy. 2 exams online and the final is in person
Mr Beck while he comes off nice at first, throughout the semester he continuously pushes his left leaning propoganda, and will ask about your beliefs, and if yours differ from his he will twist it on you and debate you during class. Not a hard class however it is not enjoyable at all. If you are trying to learn. Do not take this class.
He leans very far left in terms of politics and it shows in his grading on essays as he will grade based on what he thinks instead of how well the argument was presented. With that being said he is nice and the exams are very easy.
Very left-leaning, pushes it onto students and tries to get them to debate… if you don't say anything he is condescending and waits until he gets a response. Four short papers, all with the same instructions but on different countries. He requires you to use NYT for current events (hence left-leaning and pushing it on students). Opinionated grader.
One of the worst teachers I have ever had. Boring lectures, pushes his opinions on students, and a bizarre personality. His essays were confusing. I felt like I had to force myself to sound as left wing as possible when writing them. One time, I wrote something that sounded somewhat right wing, and he deducted points because of it. Avoid him.
If you wanna learn something, this is not the class. Mr. Beck is a nice man but half the lecture is "umm" and "uhhh" and he sidetracks every lecture to something unrelated to the material. Also, if you're not a liberal, get to hear liberal propaganda every class. The work isn't too hard, overall, just avoid this class if possible.
Do not take this class. His class is long, boring lectures where he spends time on topics before going off on left-leaning propaganda tangents. The tests are multiple-choice, but the questions are long paragraphs that make no sense. He will pick on students and talk behind their backs to his class if they leave class for the day. Not professional.
Super great guy, but honestly the class can be a bit confusing at times. Super interesting lectures, but they go off topic a lot. But other than that, honestly a very knowledgable and great guy with some good political takes.
Cool guy. Is very left and will say it but never said anything disrespectful to those in class who disagreed. Lots of reading, be ready to skim chapters in order to get through it. Very winding sometimes off topic lectures but always pretty interesting.
The problem is he is a total left-wing nut job. He makes everything about Trump. Everything. He talks about dictatorships of the past and compares them to Trump, he talks about all current events negative about the right. It is just hard to show up every other day to this propoganda push.
most of the reviews are maga hat kids who cant face the reality of saying when someone is wrong. the teacher is very smart and educated, and sources his facts, whatever side youre on doesnt matter, he knows what he is saying, and what he is saying is fighting for the right of citizens, and if that makes him left leaning, who cares.
I beg that you take the negative reviews seriously. Has great accolades but you'll see why he's a professor at Santa Fe instead of an actual university, most boring lectures of all time which you'll learn nothing from, super nitpicky on writing assignments, and a pretentious left lean bias which I'm saying as a leftist. Easy class tho, bring games.
Please, no matter how much you think you need the credit, DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS; it's not worth the mental anguish. The lectures are sleep-inducing, and his grading is straight up politically biased. Even as someone who would consider themself on the left, I was annoyed with how obsessed Dr. Beck was with bad-mouthing Trump/conservatives.
A great guy, and an even better professor.
