amazing! great course - very interesting - he loves soc and knows his stuff
He's one of the best teachers; however, the way he teaches just does not suit me
No Comments
he should be teaching kindergarten! spent one week singing childrens' songs...
first class: the story of the princess and the pea.We laugh AT him, not with him
I prefer Seary. But Brain is lighter . Good instructor though.
more suited to preschool
very funny and weird, but he;s a good instructor
Dr. Brain is honestly one of the best teacher's I've ever had. Charistmatic, interesting and most importantly, he actually knows what he's talking about!
smart guy, but he needs to retire! too much of this princess and pea stuff! 'mentally' retired years ago!
Brain is an awesome teacher! His jokes may be childish and lame, but at least he tries. We're laughing at him, not with him, but he gets us to laugh all the same. I highly reccommend him.
Does anyone know if his exams for 1120/1121 are MC or essay based? Please let me know by leaving a note in the column. Thank you so much.
taking his course now so i dont know if its easy or not. i know his tests are written
great interesting light hearted teacher who's use of examples to identify concepts makes the class fun, take good detailed notes and be prepared to write a fairly long exam
Alan Brain is a loser. Yep, a loser. He makes childish jokes and you'll think he's an easy marker huh? Well, guess again, his stupidity almost cost three quarters of the class failing marks. Alan Brain wears the same thing EVERYDAY! HE SMELLS!
Seriously silly, inner 14-yr-old is teaching, keeps it interesting but DO NOT be lulled. Exams are tedious, forget understanding concepts MEMORIZE buzzwords if you want a decent mark! Gives good funny, but can't take it from students!
Great prof. Knows how to keep the students interested. I look forward to his class everyday. His tests are not hard if you do go to class and do the readings. High class average of C+ to B. He is understanding and fun.
Very enjoyable class. Something to look forward to in the morning. Should have been in Monty Python. Tests are a lttle tough but you'll be ok if you do the readings and study your notes.
I found alan to be a self-centered, chauvinistic ****. his tests are based on silly stories told in class and not relevant course work. he feels the need to constantly remind us that he has a Phd. Steer clear of this train wreak!!!
somewhat interesting, knows how to keep a class entertained, if you want a good mark must attend all classes, class notes completely different from textbook, always wearing shorts so u can see his over-tanned legs, exams are short answers not hard.
Very enjoyable class. He's good teacher but he does get off topic sometimes..
he was a blast. He's so much like john clease its scarey. his teests are ok but he always puts in a couple questions to stump you from the little boxes in the text that noone reads. sometimes its hard to take his class seriousse and work hard for though
check your intellect at the door. he acts like a dirty old man in class and tells completely irrelevant stories in class then tests you on them. god forbid anyone challenge him or counter one of his many badly stated points. remember he has the PhD! avoid
Extremely annoying guy.
His classes are fun but for exams you need to review class notes a bit and then memorize the chapter from the text, including the small insignificant details. Not hard if you are good at memorization.
Totally irrelevant subject matter which he will test on. Any students who are serious about getting an education should avoid this teacher. Excrement. Pure excrement.
I had him for Soci1121 but this class seemed so much easier. I absolutely love this class. Class material is very interesting & you get to watch videos every wednesdays. If you attend class consistently and take good notes you will do well.
Alan Brain should teach at an elementary school. Not even high school. Maybe, even at a preschool. Avoid him if you want a real education.
avoid this man if want a real education. seems to be very full of himself because he has a Phd from a university in Tanzania!! ****, **** and tends to use historical references incorrectly. Tests are based on things not pertaining to soc!! Avoid!!!!!
If you really want to know why Alan is so stupid and childish, it's because he's from Essex, England. Essex is equivalent, no offense, to Surrey, BC. In the UK, there are tons of Essex jokes. His humour and behaviour is typical Essex style. Don't get him!
Very clear, interesting, and funny.
Blame it on the Brain.. Brain.. Blame it on the Stars.. Stars.. Whatever you do don't put the blame on you... Blame it on the Brain yeah yeah You can blame it on the Brain.... Get.. Oh.. Oh.. Oh.. I can't, I can't. I can't, can't stand the Brain.. yeah

very funny
AVOID! His discriminates against mature students and preys on Asian female students (he's disgusting). How did he become Chair of Sociology Dept? His exams have litte to do with Sociology and are very poorly written. Don't take him!
very nice and funny. class is really slow though. i've heard he's better for upper level classes. will always say 'hi' in the hallway.

Avoid him at all costs!! I'm a mature student as well and he is terrible! Tests/exams don't relate in any way to class material - talks about his own personal life a lot which is not necessary. He is a waste of hard earned money. PHD?? No way!!
He's a very nice, funny jerk. Some tips to get good grade from his exam: write down every single words he says in the class. his exam is 80% from his notes, and something from the maps in the textbook- what's the largest or smallest province in canada.
funny, smart guy. jokes all the time. take him
If you want to actually learn about sociology, take someone else; if you want to goof off and be tested on irrelevant nonsense, take him! His jokes tend to be crass.
I think he's great - I'm a mature student and have no issues with him - grow up! Funny and ties the points of the text together with helpful annecdotes. Likes participation instead of bumps on the log - who doesn't???
he is funny.jokes all the time. take him, you'll have fun!

Rad, English, Prolific, and Nuts.
hmmm well he is different. i've never had a prof that tries to undress me with his eyes...i've learned a lot of history but compared to previous soc profs i haven't learned much soc in his class. if u don't need the course to continue then go nuts!
He's got a weird sense of humour and is a little over-sexed. Also, for days on end he kept lapsing into this incredibly annoying impression of a newborn baby crying. I did not like that. His teaching style did help me retain information though.
Very hilarious, like watching monty python everymorning. Odd British chap that always talks about his asian girlfriend. One of my class mates bumped into him at wreck beach which explains why he wears really short shorts every single day of the year.
Over acted! Classes are very slow because he constantly makes stupid jokes, and overemphasizes irrelevant materials. Always talk about sex and his personal experiences. Most of the exam questions are from these junks. Don't take him if you want to learn.
You will learn more if you stay at home reading the textbook than at class. You will learn NOTHING from him. He should be fired for his silly and more often offensive jokes.
great, funny man. Test are very reasonable, no suprises. I wish I had more classes with him. He puts you in a good mood for the whole day.

Not my style. Some people found him entertaining, I felt his shtick wore thin, fast. Exams required no anaylitical thought, just memorization. Strange questions like: what was the title of a book, but not what was its content More like highschool than higher learning. Overall a disappointment.
The craziest **** to teach you and teach you well... He will put his reputation on the line to teach you a point. He can make even the dumbest students learn and he make everyone laugh... Teacher's like him are few are far beyond!
One the most hilarious professor. However, exams can be tacky if you don't study in depth. If you're not a big lecture fan, then don't take him because he overlaps on both lecture notes and the tectbook
Dr Alan Brain is an outstanding teacher. he really wants you to learn the material, instead of just teaching to get paid. His sense of humour makes potentially very boring subject matter quite entertaining. He spells everything out very clearly so its very easy to pick up on. Start the paper early
what a funny guy. easy tests, good marks( i cant believe some people complained).
Alan Brain is an idiot! His jokes aren't just stupid, but offensive. He should be fired.
Great teacher. Good stories. Clear, consistant, relatively helpful. Dont discount the random stories, they come back as exam questions.
You will learn nothing that will benefit your knowledge in Sociology in his class. It's a complete waste of time. His jokes are stupid and immature.
very funny, easy class. Dr. Brain is great. And explains everything clearly. I recomend this class.
Ah, Dr. Brain - one of my all-time favourite teachers. Everyday was like a Monty Python sketch, with a lesson in there somewhere. All teachers since have paled in comparison. I still remember your stories and how they related to the subject matter. Do you still have the cute mustache?
Do not take this course if you plan to MAJOR in SOCIOLOGY, PSYCHOLOGY, OR any ARTS related field. He will make you lose brain cells. I believe everyone lost about 20 IQ points after they completed his course.
fun, easy instructor. Even if you are not interested in soc you will like his class.
Very good prof - intertwined the material with jokes, made it very interesting to learn, and a pleasure to be a part of. I'd recommend this class to anyone who wants a semi-interesting course taught by a very good teacher who makes it interesting. I'm surprised to see so many negative responses...
fair grader. tests + lectures are easy. if you're serious in sociology, don't complain about brain teaching irrelavent crap. if you can't apply yourself and the theories into everyday life by yourself, consider yourself braindead and can't think. you should reconsider your major in sociology.

This guy is full of himself...and boring
A good intro Sociology course. Alan's lectures are extremely basic but he's engaging and ensures that they're never boring. He does dock marks if you don't show, so that's a bit of a drag. Fair exams and he's a reasonably easy marker. Very flirtatious and charming British chap, loves women, always friendly outside of class. Recommended.
if u hate memory theories and defination.take his class. exams are fairly ok. doesn't expect u to know all the detailed stuff.he likes all his student and very nice in and outside classroom.some says u can't learn anything from his class. that's wrong.soci is that u learn everyday.he encourage u to apply what u learn to really life.only 1 hr final.
This is a great teacher who truly loves his job. I looked forward to this class every day. Lots of energy and a great sense of humour. Very knowledgeable, too. He understands a wide variety of topics, and includes them in his classes while applying them to everyday situations. You barely notice how much you are learning because he makes it so easy.
Dr. Alan Brain is the best teacher! He is so interesting & engaging; he makes class enjoyable & fun to go to! He relates course material to real life so students can understand better. I wish there were more instructors that knew the art of teaching like him! He has a tremendous amount of knowledge about sociology. Take his class, you will love him
alan is a very nice teacher. he tells us stories to explain sociology terms, which made it alot easier to understand. he marks fairly, and he doesn't make it hard on students. as long as u study his materials and the text, there's nothing tricky in his exams. I recommend him everyone who wants to take sociology.
ez IF you do the readings and show up
if you show up and listen to him and do the readings you should get a good mark. He keeps the class entertained with his stories
Funny guy in a "roll your eyes" sort of way. Class moves a bit slowly because he is very thourough in his stories and explinations. Tests are not hard if you pay attention in class. He is quite mindful of those who are ESL. Good instrutor to take if you are new to post-secondary. Those with more experience may get bored.
finally someone with a sense of humour. if you are stiff dont take his class simple as that. tip: go to class and you will do v. good on tests. he is very inteligent.
Dr. Brain is a mentor. He catches one's imagination and turns your head with offbeat quirkiness. Tests are true to form and preparing for midterm we were warned in advance on WHAT would be examinable. As a mature student I know he doesn't discriminate on age, perhaps on stupidity of student.... but then that's deserved!
I don't understand how people can't like him! Super entertaining teacher, really knows his stuff and teaches it CLEARLY! You do need to go to class every day, but if you already do that then get ready for an easy A.
Very good teacher. Very organized, very clear in his explanations and very fair tester and marker. Less "entertaining" in his upper level class than his introductory classes. Much more serious. Show up in class, have genuine interest in the subject and you'll do just fine. I recommend all his classes.
Brain is definitely unique. Described as "a jocular fellow who wears shorts" by a fellow professor, he's particlarly good at driving home important points, and allows for creativity on exams (which is refreshing in the soc. sciences). Essay topics were way too broad, and exam questions based on the text infuriatingly random, but he's recommended.
So from someone who has a 4.0 GPA, and isn't afraid of a bit of work, this guy sucks. If you're happy with C+'s, this man's your man. If you like giving a detailed description of sex, and or sewage, this is your class. midterms, and finals are completely random. I now have a 3.44 GPA. Thanks Brain. It's all random. Good luck.
Awesome prof! Entertaining lectures that drive in the point. To that 4.0 student... did you go to class? Did you read the text? Try it, and you shouldn't have any GPA problems in Brain's class. I don't know where you went wrong. His midterm/final are set-up like he says, 1/2 class 1/2 text. I highly recommend him. & yes, he wears shorts.
His lectures are engaging and he cares. The only negative thing I have to say is his exams can be a bit silly. Case & point he asked for the EXACT year women received the right to vote in Canada. On a test out of 20 marks you can lose out on marks that way, so pay attention in class. He puts questions in just to see if you've been attending class.
Bad teacher; stay away from him.
I never felt so offended in my entire life. He claims to be a feminist but never stops at making **** and **** remarks. Not helpful at all, I tried to approach him and he offered no help whatsoever. The material is easy though if you go to class and read the text book you will ace the class*pay attention to his stupid little stories*
He's kind of an idiot. I didn't learn anything. One of his exam questions was: what did me and my exwife used to fight about. Answer: chores... conclusion: women are socialized. So perhaps you wrote in your notes socialization is the process by which we learn the culture, but you didn't write down that was also why your prof slept on the couch.
Brain is above and beyond the BEST prof. at Langara. Classes are entertaining and informative. He goes out of his way to make sure everyone understands everything thoroughly; most of the time you don’t even realize you’re leaning! He is hilarious and makes learning fun. His exams are uncomplicated and fair. I encourage everyone to take him once.
He is nice as a professor and simply as a person. He will make you learn at least something. He reviews at the beginning of each lecture the material from the previous day. I found it annoying at the beginning, but later realized how helpful and good it was.
BEWARE-Brain is the kind of prof. that makes you shake your head and ask "how the hell does the college still allow him to teach?!" He's most unprofessional, often telling some students"Shut the F--- up!" in class and leering at asian girls calling them "princess" or threatening to spank them. Seriously I'm not sure how he gets away with all this.
he makes everything so interesting, and his lecture is very VERY FUN!~ if u are ESL student, dont worry, he will make sure u understand. his notes are very clear!
Easy to get a B if you attend classes and read the text. Notes are clear and easy to memorize with his stories. Funny Guy. Good for a beginner class (he teaches in a high school style which "guide" you to think a certain way, which is the bad side of him). He purposely ALTER historical events, religious beliefs, world condition to fit his teaching
Unprofessional and not a serious instructor. He is one of the worst instructors in Langara college history! If you're planning to get into grad school, don't take take his classes! He'll lower your IQ.
he's very funny
Beware, overachievers! This guy is a potential GPA killer. You must be sure to memorize every word of the textbook and worthless digressions from his lectures, as his exams are a crapshoot of worthless, brainless rote memory questions. Horrendous professor, arrogant, unhelpful and a bit of a **** to boot.
I dont recommend this prof,he is always late, terrible jokes is a GPA killer if you dont get out of his class fast, attendance is necessary because you have to listen to his lame stories & goes off topic constantly along with telling students to shutup if they distrupt class, doesnt look interested to teach at all, waste of time and money
Dr. Brain thinks that an unprofessional, silly, care-free attitude is the best way of 'reaching' through to students. He thrives on insulting organized religion; especially Christianity. He hates the fact that he is a college professor, and not a stand up comedian.Make sure you memorize the most useless facts for his exams.Over all, C-.
He has a great sense of humour which can sometimes go overboard. He's really interesting and easy...just attend his classes, take notes and read the txtbook. I actually got an A without putting too much effort. His concepts were easy to remember because of his weird examples!! One of the best profs i ever had! I really had a great time in his class
a very good teacher. His lectures are very interesting.
his teaching skills are over the top, he trails off topic for way to long and expects you to pay attention to every little word, his test are insane because you need to know every little thing he says and also a few things from the text. i would not suggest him.
Lectures are interesting, mandatory attendance! Have to write every little thing from class and read the text twice cuz he expects you to even know the small captions under the pics. Pretty hard marker! And for some reason the whole semester he wore the same navy blue shorts and runners with a diff white t-shirt everyday. And I still see him in the
I'm sorry, but this dude makes everything SO difficult... His jokes are lame, he entertains himself, and is completely uninterested helping his students to succeed. I got an "A" in my first Sociology course, yet a pitiful "C+" in Brains class - worst of all, he doesn't care one bit. Save yourself a GPA killer, and take Prahst or Eisler... Please
GPA killer??? some of you must be joking. he was the easiest A ever. Funny, interesting and smart guy. I loved his classes.
honestly.. i took this guy for both the first year levels and 2nd year level, nice guy.. but his exams are BS!!! he asks questins that are so irrevelant.. from what you will study and learn.. i agree hes a GPA KILLER!
He is the funniest prof ever! his classes are entertaining and he always makes sure everyone understands! sure sometimes he can go off topic but it usually does teach a sociological lesson! Honestly those who do not like him are just up-tight!!
Seriously, Alan Brain has got game
He is such an awesome professor!Best recommend! So nice.I enjoy his classes.very funny and i could learn a lot.
I loved his class, he's a bit crazy, but that's what make the class all the more fun. I had an awesome time learning. The language he used was pretty casual which made learning a breeze. For sure I'm going to be taking his second year courses!
A+ for fun and theatrical... D- for teaching skills... I have been leaving the class wondering what it "is" that I have learned. Mr. Brain; you are entertaining but save that for drama class... I hate having to assign numbers to rate you this early in the game but feel it unfair not to let you know what's up. More substance, less fluff PLEASE!
From a 3rd year UBC minor: he is an extremely easy B, but an impossible A, since his text book exam questions are completely random. And don't get me wrong, his classes are theatrical, but I later had to teach myself the basics; I wish I knew less about chastity belts, and more about the fundamentals. Mindless class= useless later in life.
I don't even know what to say about this man... He wears tiny shorts daily with white shoes and shirts with random words eg." meralize lagijuana." Everytime I think back to his class I think of all the time and money wasted. He asked us to write a plot for a romantic novel and got all the women in the class to read it out loud! Never take his class
He bit me, because it was Hallowe'en and he was dressed as a vampire. Women might want to avoid this teacher.
Horrible. Lectures were pointless stand up comedy acts, exams were just tests to see if you had been paying attention to his off-topic dog and pony show. Little hint, Brain: Questions about your horribly unfunny jokes are generally reserved for bonus questions, not half the exam mark.
very not reasonable to go over lectures before test or open to bonus assignments.
Great teacher! Take his jokes & humour with a grain of salt. If your offended by him you really need to loosen up alot! He is such a great prof who really cares about his students and makes sure they understand the material. Extremely reasonable. Attend classes/Participate in discussion. Study class notes. Read text. You'll get a grade you deserve!
WORST TECHER EVER!!!! LECTURES WERE USUELESS HE WAS EXTREMELY OFFENSIVE IN CLASS... FAILED ME BECAUSE I DIDNT COME TO ENOUGH CLASSES EVEN THOUGH I HAD AN A AVERAGE!!! GIRLS STAY AWAY, HE IS SO INNAPROPRIATE. I CANT BELIEVE HE HASNT BEEN WRITTEN UP
Very good instructor. Tries to make it interesting by using stories to illustrate what he is teaching. At times he seemed to go too slow. Yes, he made occasional inappropriate comments, but he wasn't perving on anyone. You must go to class (Duh!) and read the chapters to get an "A". All in all it was an interesting class and not too hard.
BEST TEACHER SOOOO FUNNNY very interesting class and really easy to get an A other than that people should not be offended by his jokes because hes JOKING duhh
Brain gets a bit easier to deal with as the class progresses. Class was a 2000 wd essay, midterm and final. I find Brain sometimes amusing but more often frustrating and he can be pretty offensive. Good if you don't really care about soc.
Cannot believe this man is still employed considering the rude and often very inapropriate and unprofessional comments he makes. His comments really took away frpm course content, if you are remotely nterested in socilogy take someone else who won't waste your time and money.
The people that didn't enjoy his class are uptight! He does go off topic quite a bit, but gets the material across. Such a fun class, recommend!!
very bad teacher , horrible, do not recoment taking his class.
Dr. Brain is the one of the most awkwardly entertaining profs Ive ever. His lectures are bizarre and comical. I didn't learn much but enjoyed watching Dr. Brain for the 2 hours of my day- He reminds me of a British t.v. show. Live by the text you will do just fine.
Funnest, Funniest, most entertaining prof at Langara. Some lectures are so lively they make you wanna jump outta your shorts :)
He takes two weeks to not fully cover a single chapter, each class is filled with tedium and tasteless remarks. He covers up his racial insults with the pretence of "examples" and "jokes", so there's no way to tell him off. If you're a pretty girl, watch out! He will be extra inappropriate
The only reason why the attendance is mandatory is so that he can make you sit through his insulting jokes. He appears to be outspoken, but in reality he is an insecure man who can't come to terms with his own aging. Therefore, every class he makes sure to confront the students with their own mortality and disadvantages of their (younger) generation
If you're brown or asian, you'll be made fun of. If you're a girl, you'll be an easy target. If you're a guy, you'll be seen as a competition. If you happen to say something that doesn't underline his point, you'll be shut down because a class with him is a one man show. WATCH OUT!!!
All i can do is to agree with the other posts. get ready to be reduced to a racial stereotype on a daily basis. avoid him, if you can.
If you stubbornly insist on taking a class with this man despite all the warnings here, you are choosing your own misery. This man is an awful professor.
Don't take this class! Indira and Eisler will make you love soc and actually teach...unlike Brain's class where the majority of what you learn is useless.
not your traditional teaching style, goes off topic, takes forever to cover a chapter. marks somewhat easy but his seemingly pointless anecdotes are on the test so pay attention to his stories and read the txt to do well. makes a lot of off colour comments and jokes. attendance matters cause he will fail you if you skip enough
very funny. has a hilarious teaching style, wears shorts shorts. very liberal. good guy. short answer tests.
Awful teacher. Maybe entertaining to dumb kids, but overall...ugh. Unfunny, unprofessional, unhelpful, rude. Drops ****, stupid comments all the time. Tests you on his personal anecdotes and stupid jokes. Do NOT take his class.
HORRIBLE. GPA killer- exams are worth 20marks, 2 questions worth 1pt each. and the questions are what would be a 4-5pt question, so if you don't nail it ABSOLUTELY nail on you will FAIL. Talks about sex, drugs, and more sex thinking he can capture your attention and tie it onto Sociology. No slides, no laptop, no nothing, he just SITS and TALKS.
this guy is weird, his voice is boring and suddently he starts screaming. he also say that he does not have time for us in his office because he has to many student. If you are planning to take his class you need to listen when he talks about his ex-wife because he will ask you a question about it in the midterm..
This professor is absolutely horrible. He will test you on the most trivial, useless information from his lectures and the textbook. It will not test your knowledge of sociology at all. For example, what did his ex-wife hate about his cleanliness? Give me a break. I should have listened to these comments before I registered. AVOID AT ALL COSTS!!!!!
He has a very different style. Will talk about seemingly unrelated stuff, like conflicts with his wife, or parties where they try to recruit for cults, or will spend an entire class on a fairy tale. At first it seems dumb, but in the end, every story illustrates the topic he is teaching. Just gotta think a little to make sense of it. Great!
This is the first time I have felt it necessary to rate a professor. On my term paper, all he wrote was "Quite good. Interesting to read". My grade was 65% and there were no other notes. When I asked him to clarify, he shrugged, told me he was busy and had to get home. This is the worst post secondary class I've taken so far.
spent more time talking about his trips across the world and useless info, then asks you about it on the finals. derives very little info on tests from notes, he asks you little details he says in class like " how did i say i felt about.." very hard marker and gives very little reason to his grade.. great guy, maybe not for teaching tho..
I can't believe that he still teaches! He is HORRIBLE!
ugh! you'll hate his classes, he is boring and should really start wearing some pants. He is repeatedly rude to students, and then pretends it is all a joke or an example of sociological issue.
He is horrible at teaching!! talks about a lot of his personal stuff but not much about sociology. Hard marker..don't taking if you want to get a good mark.
you are going to LOVE sociology when you take this class with this professor. Alan Brain is so helpful, funny teacher, He explains everything in a very interesting way. you are going to enjoy this class.
Alan seems to be a rather polarizing figure; he's either loved or hated. I've taken several classes with him and have grown to appreciate his laid back style. The theatrics are usually done with a purpose in mind and are meant to help make often dense concepts accessible to those who may otherwise find them challenging.
Amazing teacher, very underrated. Tells a lot of very entertaining stories from his day to day life - by the end you realize they tie in to the subject matter. Very quirky guy. If you understand his sense of humour you'll realize he's quite approachable and very fair. Great class.
what a waste of time
I'm a senior at UBC. I've never bothered to rate a prof from my days at Langara. I suddenly recalled A.Brain today and decided to check out his ratings; shocked by all the haters here! A brilliant (eccentric!) teacher! Can never forget SOC concepts because of his subversive style and hillarious lecture! Teases everyone; he's an equal opportunist!
His midterms are ok if you take down the notes he puts on the board and read the textbook. The essay is easy, but you need to be detailed and focused on your topic of choice. His short shorts are gross and he makes pervy jokes aimed towards women.
I read about his gross behavior before enrolling, but somehow thought I could deal with it. This guy is a preditor, and I don't use the term lightly. He discussed his friend's INTIMATE sexual activities, read from a harlaquin romance novel and penthouse and called a young woman in the first row a 'dirty, naughty girl' within the first 3 classes.
Overall not a bad professor, his tests are easy if you put in the effort. He is not really clear with his papers and exams but he is approachable.
The best part of taking his class was GETTING COOKIES every time someone's phone went off in class. In the 3-4 months of classes, about 15 people's phones went off. EXAM WISE: He asks the most stupidest questions that have nothing to do with sociology.
Don't miss class because his exams are based on his lectures. He tells a lot of stories that he tests on, some that relate to the material and some that don't. Very entertaining prof and his exams are quite easy as long as you have attended lectures and paid attention. Some exam Qs are based on definitions in the text, review the ch. summary pgs
Alan is a wonderful instructor! His enthusiasm is contagious plus he is so friendly! He knows each person's name, which I find amazing. His lectures are interesting, and his exams are mostly based on them. Overall, I recommend this class!
If you don't have an open mind, it will be very hard to put up with Alan. I learned A LOT from him- not just for the exams but also society.
Alan is a pretty funny guy, but he always gets off topic. He spends too much time on random topics. His exam's are based on 20 short answers. You have to attend class and read the textbook because questions from the exam are both from class notes and the textbook.
Alan is an amazing prof. Yes, he wears short shorts and makes some crude jokes, but it's all in good fun. He wouldn't be the same without them. Go to class, and listen tentatively. His lectures are NEVER boring so I've always looked forward to class. If you have a sense of humour, you'll love him. I'd recommend him to anyone. AMAZING!
THE BEST PROF!!!!
ALAN IS SUPER AWESOME!!!Though his tests are a bit tricky, just make sure to jot notes and study every detail he mentioned in class then it will be an easy A!Alan likes teasing ppl but I still love him so much :) HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!!
An average prof. He tries to make the lectures as interesting as possible, but maybe the material is just boring to me. His tests are REALLY hard, so attend all classes, take good notes, and read the text. Also is very hard in marking papers.
Alan is a great professor and takes the information from the text and lectures the material clearly. You must attend his classes for the material on exams are based on his lecture notes and the text. Show up for class, listen to his stories, study your notes and you will do fine. Normally 2 exams, one final and one term paper.
I'm surprised he still has a job, he couldn't get more inappropriate. The tests are easy If you attend every single class and study the textbook. He contradicts the textbook almost every class and gives a reason why he is smarter than the author which you need to know for the tests. 15/20 questions on the final were completely text based.
Alan is absolutely lovely! He takes meaning of sociology and breaks it down for you in order for you to clearly understand. Attend all classes, listen to his lecture stories, read the chapters and you will breeze through his course and you'll actually learn sociology. Thanks Alan for a wonderful term.
Alan is a wonderful teacher. That's what I thought in the first couple weeks, then I saw that he contradicts the textbook, and also gets many more questions from the text than he says he will be going to for exams. He is a ridiculously hard marker, and above all, what a horrible interacter with students outside of class time. BORDERLINE, RUDE!!
He's funny, interesting and somewhat of an easy teacher. We had two tests and one essay. If you study the notes but mostly the book then you should do fine. Also, attend class since he puts questions on the test that are directly from the class. One of my favourite professors.
Wouldn't take it with this prof. Yea hes funny in class but his notes are short but his essay is ridiculous. Also his midterms are confusing, don't no what hes asking. Hard marker. Take this class with his if you wanna laugh but grade wise, watch out. Plus he wears short shorts to class everyday.. jus thought id mention that too
funny but hard marker. not worth taking. essay is difficult
Show up to class, participation counts and if you miss too many, you will fail. Midterm and final are fair, mostly lecture-based, 20 short-answer questions. The essay is very tricky though, so be aware that the expectations are high here. While he is funny and entertaining, he definitely has an edge.
He's very funny and not that hard marker at all! His exams are all short answer questions (20 questions). Just make sure you attend all his lecture classes and write down every little detail he says because you never know whether it's gonna be on the exam or not. Reading the textbook is also recommended! But mostly, his exams come from his notes
He is super funny but his exam is hard because he will ask sth that is so detail. Worth taking tho. Not really a hard marker but he will never reply your email.
His lectures are long and he gets off topic a lot. You only have one midterm, researcher paper and a final exam. You have to take notes on everything he says in class cause some of the random stuff he say will show up on the exam. PAY ATTENTION IN CLASS! You will have to do A LOT of reading and notes on your own time.
FANTASTIC teacher!!! The best I've had so far! It's no easy A but it's a hard F! You have to be stupid not to attend his classes. Great guy, tells awesome stories. Fun and relevant.
He's a really funny guy! pretty old and loves to wear shorts. His exams are all short written questions and all information comes from his class and textbook. Make sure to pay attention in class cuz he'll ask some very specific questions he said in class. Also make sure to read the chapters thoroughly!
I was expecting this course to be easy. Exams are worth 90% of your overall mark, and participation 10%. Exams are 20 written questions, however half of the exam is total irrelevant and off topic. This is an unfair course, especially making each exam worth 30%. Alan is not helpful at all. He has favourites. And the best feedback is. Drop out.
alan is an okay teacher. He gets off topic way to much!!! if you want a good mark, attendance is mandatory. I got a great mark on both the midterm and paper but the final was HARD!
He is actually a really nice prof. His tests including the final exam are short answer questions, but they are very easy if you just attend his lectures and skim the book. He is jokes around a lot but I don't share his sense of humour at all (beware though, cause some of his little stories show up on the exams.
He is a good teacher.
Aaln is a really good prof and he's so funny, he always tells very funny jokes and stories lots of stories (be aware of the small details could be in the exam), you need to attend his lectures in order to pass because most of his questions in the exam are based on his notes.
Dr. Alan Brain!! He has a genuine passion for sociology and you can tell by the way he goes about it. He has a contagious sense of humor. If you dont study his notes, you wont pass his course. His 3 midterms are worth 30% each and are all based off short written questions, 10% participation. We also get cookies if someone's phone goes off! :)
He is a funny guy and make sure to attend his lectures but he doesn't teach much from the book and you have to do lots of self studyings, otherwise, you won't pass. Not much to do in his class except a paper but he is a very hard marker and doesn't give part marks. Not recommending his class
he is fine but not the best. course consists 2 midterms and 1 final. you must take good notes and do a lot of seflstudy (most of his exam questions come from the book even if he didn't explain the info)
one of the worst teacher talks very good in class but sucks in exams 20 mark exam and each question of 1 mark no matters question is of 1 word or 10 lines
he talks about the stuff that is out of syllabus
(1120 + 1121) Alan made otherwise boring material very entertaining. His personal anecdotes/stories are not irrelevant - they're terrific pnemonic devices! I still remember all the concepts from his classes, years later. (And he still remembers my name! Very nice guy.) If you're smart/good at studying for short-answer exams, you'll do just fine.
I actually look forward for Wednesdays. I love his lectures. They are funny, but they are a very easy way to learn sociology. The only important thing is to take notes, since many exam questions are based his Lecture. If you take notes, then read the book before exams. Then you're good.
Avoid him as soon as you can. Learning about SOCI is a good thing, but I would recommend you should pick another professor to learn about SOCI. Don't choose Alan Brain. Everyone has their own point of view about their professor, but Alan Brain is actually not good at SOCI. Best of luck for those who chose his class.
bad instructor.
He is a really awesome professor. Teaches in an amusing way. And is really nice and helpful.
ONE WORD: BAD
bad instructor in SOCI field at langara college
The meat of the course is just stuff any humanities student should already know, I put a three for difficulty only because he demands you regurgitate precisely what was said in class and book back onto the tests. Some think he's funny, what I'll say is he tries very hard to be funny. He's always late for class and wastes as much time as he can.
2 midterms, one final, each worth 30%, class attendance 10% (sign in sheet every lecture) his exams are 20 short answer questions. half of his exam q's are lecture based &half of his lectures are personal stories so make sure to take notes on his personal stories because they will come up on the exam. its like he does this to trip us up on purpose
Exam is very tough
He was my favourite. I still remember his funny anecdotes to illustrate the issue. I took his class in early 2000's. Does he still wear shorts all the time?
Alan is hilarious! He makes the classroom laugh so much during class and I just love his type of humour! He made me look forward to class every week. That being said, as a professor he seems to worry more about entertaining than teaching. He doesnt prepare you well for exams and relies on students remembering all the lecture details. GPA decliner.
Always makes me laugh!
Always makes me laugh! Great lecturer. Make sure to take notes.
if yer unaware of sociological concepts he's the best prof u can imagine; if yer working toward a sociological degree he is amazing at getting u started on yer way but has to spend enough time making sure everybody is on their way that u don't learn quite as much as u'd expect as he teaches now, he is an amazing starter teacher. could teach higher
Never ever go for Alan. His exams weigh too much and are just from the stories made by him in class and these too are irrelevant to the syllabus.
Alan is a best instructor. his classes are fun. I just love his lectures. if I will get chance I will definitely go back in his class. easy to get marks and he give bonus marks too just for free.
Just don't, he is even worse than you think. Inappropriate, unfunny, and brutal lectures. Trust me, don't.
Get ready for a lot of this: "I did my PhD in Africa therefore I know everything about Africa... I lived in India therefore I know everything about Indian culture..." However Alan consistently fails to understand people in the class who have a foreign accent! He is honestly the worst professor at Langara.
Lecture notes + stories are critical. Tests can be very difficult to score / study for an A+ if you don't know how to listen/take notes for Alan's testing style. Genuinely interesting lecturer. He always wears shorts btw--even in the cold. Pretty cool! Participate! Study the textbook too! He is very cordial. I would only take SOCI with Alan.
Can Langara please audit Alan's classes! Why is this guy allowed to teach, someone needs to report him for his behaviour. Literally sits and talks at you for two excruciating hours about his personal life. Take any other class and you will be better off.
Dr Brain was one of my favourite all time professors when I attended Langara. Once you knew how he graded his exams you understood what you needed to study. He is very charismatic and his stories were hilarious. I took a number of his courses and because of him Sociology was my major.
Tests were based 1/2 on the textbook and 1/2 on lectures, so take good notes on what he's saying! I actually really liked him and thought he was funny. If you take good lecture notes the tests should be easy/straightforward for you.
Lectures are EXTREMELY slow paced-spends first hour reviewing last class. Often goes off on tangents telling personal anecdotes that have nothing to do with the material, followed by exams that test on his anecdotes, NOT the concepts. Has an inappropriate sense of humor, didnt appreciate it. Has a manditory attendance so you have to sit through it.
weird humor and sense of style. very kind approachable for q's. def pay attention to class and read the whole chapters bc he makes some of the numbers, anecdotes, and tb insight paragraphs part of the exam cause they're worth a good chunk of the exams. class was slow n boring and easy to the point where it made me not pay attention so beware
You need to pay undivided attention in his class. his class isn't hard but his tests are dumb. half stuff from his lectures like stories and other half from the textbook and read it carefully.
i took a class with him about 17 years ago. after all those years and couple of universities, he is still my favourite prof. take a class with him, just for fun.
He is so funny, make up his own examples. The stories he tell in class will come in exam.
Teacher cannot be taken seriously. Too high of expectations for first year students taking intro courses. Can understand the curriculum thuroughly and study forever but no amount can prepare you for the ridiculously irrelevant tests that have barley have anything to do with the subject. The whole class is "are you listening" not "do you understand"
If you're a new student or don't do well with exams, don't take his courses. Tests are barley relevant to the subject and only cover very little of the textbook material. He determines your understanding of the entire concept/theory if you remember a word or phrase he verbally says to the class, but doesn't ask to explain the purpose of the lecture
DON'T TAKE HIS CLASS. Lectures are painfully boring and slow. Tests consist of his stories about himself and won't stop talking about how he's well educated and lived in so many places yet makes insensitive remarks towards his Indian int'l students. PLEASE PUT YOUR MONEY TOWARDS A BETTER CLASS/PROF.
If you enjoy short shorts, professors flirting with students and men dressing up as women, you're in the right place!!!
