The funniest, friendliest professor ever. Plus he cusses like a sailor.
Alan is friendly and hilarious, and he knows a lot about Japan. His baby is really cute.

Swears like a mobster...an honest teacher! Great class and interesting lectures.
He is nothing short of marvelous. He has a passion for his subject that is contagious. He may swear often, but his brutal honesty about the material is appreciated. Take a class with him, you wont regret it.
Coolest professor ever!!! He made the class very interesting and he's so funny. Everyone should take his class.
Also Hist 26, 8, 149c, 196 Alan kicks ass!
Alan is awesome. If I had taken a class from him before my senior year, I would probably be a history major now.
this guy is ehhh. alright... he swears a lot so its cool but he was hard to understand. hes all lecture and his lectures were i guess "good" but it was hard to follow.. like all mixed up.. confusing.. he knows his stuff though.
Christy is a cool guy! His essays aren't that difficult because he has an excellent website on writing guidelines which most professors don't give a crap about. He's a very fair professor and is passionate and actually makes the text come alive!
He was a great teached, and was very interesting to me. He and Co-Professor Murray were extremely helpful and nice. The essays were hard but since he had a website about how to write an essay, it was very helpful.
best class ever
Alan is awesome, he is very passionate about the material he teaches. I've had two classes with him so far and they have both been interesting and entertaining!
great class!
He's such a cool guy!
Alan is amazing. He cares so much about his subject, it's hard as a student not to be drawn into the subject because of his passion
alan is fabulous. i honestly think he is one of the most talented and underrated professors at this school.
i had him for 10 classes in my four years if that tells you how great i think he is. he is awesome. funny, knowledgeable and interesting. he has some damn good stories too
Christy is by foar one of the best profs our there. His lectures are engaging and he knows his material up and down. He is very exact on what he wants his papers to look like but gives thourough instructions on how to get them that way. Ecellent to talk to one on one
This is a great professor. He is very enthusiastic about what he teaches and is always there to help the students. Take a course taught by him even if you are not a history major.
Very good professor. This class was awesome. He was so funny and made the class so much better. Take it if it's offered!

AWESOME guy~ He's suuuper interesting all the time. He's fair and easy. One of the best proff i've had here.
Very funny and witty professor. He has high standards though so don't expect not to be challenged - especially with writing. He was my undergrad advisor and the reason I became an Asia & Islamic World Hist major.
nice guy but not much substance.
Christy is by foar one of the best profs our there. His lectures are engaging and he knows his material up and down. He is very exact on what he wants his papers to look like but gives thourough instructions on how to get them that way. Ecellent to talk to
alan is, like me, a university of chicago refugee and he restored my faith in academia. hooray!
he was excellent
This class was amazing. Professor Christy is one of the most amazing professors, no, teachers I have ever had. He makes his lectures incredibly engaging and funny...he knows how to communicate the material in a way that everyone understands. Very easygoing, but not necessarily easy. I'm taking his senior seminar next quarter...joy! TAKE THIS PROF!
Enthusiastic teacher. Didn't really have to take notes, no quizes or tests, just two essays and a group project (the lowest grade on that was a B). That said, I really learned a lot just from listening and watching video clips. Attendance to lecture and section are part of your grade by the way. 5 books required but reading wasn't too bad.
I have had Professor Christy for 2 classes so far and I will be taking a third with him in the fall. He is easily one of my favorite teachers that I've had in all of my academic life. His lectures are engaging and funny, he's honestly interested in your work and will do his best to help you. A++ Professor. Need more like him at UCSC.
I had no interest in this subject and I still don't, I took this class because there was no room anywhere else, but I got really lucky! Alan Christy made this class a lot of fun! He is funny, helpful, clear, organized, and effective as a teacher! I wish he taught classes relevant to my major! I'll miss having him.
He means well but is a very pretentious intellectual. Be prepared for an over-intellectualized teaching style. The final paper makes no sense as it does not pertain to the class, but only used to inflate his own ego. He does not lecture chronologically but rather goes of on tangents that dont always make sense. Not very straightforward at all.
This dude is way burned out. He needs to take a break.
He was pretty good. Not great. I felt he was disrespectful in being late all the time. Also his foul language was immature. There was no need for it.
I really don't get the previous posts. He is by far the nicest, funniest, most interesting professor i've had so far. He makes the class SO interesting because he's really funny and like a big kid. Everytime i've gone to talk to him he's been really helpful and eager to lead me in the right direction.
I really liked Alan a great deal. He was a nice sweet guy. But he was a bit too much of a "kid". He swears too much and doesn't take things seriously. He was too much of a "nice guy clown".
I dont understand all the negative comments about professor christy... i think that he is one of the best professors ever... he is such a nice guy and will never refuse to help you out... Christy is funny, a little childish, but totally awesome... i would strongly advise anyone to take his classes...
I agree, Prof Christy was just a ?big bubbly kid? in our class and we all really enjoyed it. I am devastated he was denied tenure and signed the petition. We don?t always need to have serious professors. Sometimes it is nice just to relax and have fun. Geez, some people are so, like, uptight.
so alan is a bit goofy, but he makes class fun and keeps students on their toes. he knows what he teaches very well, and anybody who can make sponge bob intellectual is a genius in my book.
too bad history isn't my favorite subject, but prof christy is a really good teacher. he knows his stuff and is really enthusiastic! he's really chill and he makes his lectures as fun as it could be. i like his slides, they're actually fun to look at, lol. :)
Though I'm a history major and go to class fascinated every day, Professor Christy realizes that for many people this is an introduction to history/just a GE class. He makes lectures/readings fun for everyone. He and Professor Hu cover interesting topics for China, Korea, and Japan.
Professor Christy is a GREAT lecturer! Makes the class really interesting and is a really nice guy. There's a good amount of work but the readings are interesting and he's very approachable. Take this class!
Alan is a really cool teacher. He was interesting and an also very engaging teacher. Amazing! I'm actually going to miss going to his class, plus I met amazing people. He's easy going and definitely a good teacher. Highly recommended!!
Easy, Easy, Easy. This guy is chill and defines a gut class. He knows the score, if you don't rock the boat, he won't and gives you an A. He also has a great potty mouth.
Christy is one of the best professors I've had. I took his hist40a class and he is just amazing! He is engaging and fun and really makes you want 2 learn about the subject. I'm a science major and fell in love with this class! The class is fairly easy, there are in class quizzes,so attendance is important. Great class, take if given the opportunity!
If I recall his dad was at the old AD Little. Sharp guy, too bad the genes didn't flow down to little Alan. Very so-so.
They must have gotten rid of this class..but I took Christy for Modern Asian History in 2004. He was great! He actually taught the discussion sections himself - very enthusiastic. I was a Bio major but loved his class so much that I thought of changing to History. One of the best teachers at UCSC.
WOW, I wish there were more like Alan. Honestly I didn't even have to go and would have receieved an "A". If you want a no brainer "A" and a history gut, this is the way to go. He doesn't care, and you don't have to.
It upset me he was late 70 percent of the time. It didn't show respect. Also I found his swearing offensive. He seemed to know a lot about Japan and Asia.
Best teacher ever!
The comment about Alan leaving UCSC is not true.
I love professor Christy. I definitely don't understand the negative comments. He's not only extremely intelligent and learned about his subject, but he actually cares about his students! It doesn't get any better than that. I loved him and his class him and prof. Yang made showing up worth it everyday. Take his classes. Period.
I LOVE ALAN! I really don't understand why people wouldn't like him. He's one of the most fun and engaging professors at UCSC! His lectures are never dull thanks to his fantastic sense of humor, and he understands in his lower divs that not everyone lives and breathes history (unlike me). Take his 40A and 80Y classes, you won't be disappointed!
Prof. Christy is an amazing lecturer. He is clear, engaging, and witty. He lectures at a perfect pace, and each of his points leads logically to the next. He is very funny and really cares about his students. I never wanted to miss class b/c his lectures are always so interesting.
The teaching dynamic, done by Christy and Yang, brought for one of the most engaging and interesting lectures I've been to, even when the material wasn't actually interesting. Christy is a powerful lecturer by knowing what he is talking about and adding emphasis and comical comments constantly.
Powerful lecturer. Knows his stuff and has a great sense of humor. Witty. Overall great guy and teacher.
Great guy. Great lecturer. Makes history more interesting with his enthusiasm and clarity. Class didn't have a midterm or final, but rather a project, mandatory peer review of others' projects and attendance recording/quizzes every class via iClickers.
Easy class. Animated teacher. Just skim the readings and you'll be able to answer most of the clicker questions. Essays are graded surprisingly hard. Pro tip: dont formulate an opinion; just summarize.
Alan makes the lectures very interesting. Our class was in the morning and he kept me awake with his enthusiasm. However, you do have to attend class everyday because there are 2 questions quizzes almost everyday with an Clicker. If you do well on the quizzes and essays, you do not have to take the final.
I LOVED this class because of him. He's enthusiastic, nice, and keeps the class entertained and interested. No final, just a project (that's pretty easy at that). 2 quiz questions every day, but you don't even have to read if to get the right answer most of the time. Uses and updates eCommons almost daily. Great guy just to talk to as well.
I love this guy! Well, not like that. But he is an awesome teacher. He's understanding and is always willing to help his students. He definitely knows his stuff. Funny and interesting guy. Was able to enjoy class because of him.
love this guy. so funny and cool!
Best teacher ever!!! Very helpful and charismatic. I didn't need to take many notes at all due to his good teaching.
This man is probably the best instructor and professor I've had in my entire four years at UCSC. It's too bad I didn't take classes from him earlier.
He was really nice and i'm really glad i had him as a teacher. The class and readings were also very interesting. Made me appreciate Japanese, Korean, and Chinese culture.
Alan is a super sweet guy and very smart and passionate about the subjects he teaches. My biggest issue though was the fact that the class had iClicker quizzes every single class and that the due dates and assignments were super ambiguous. The subject matter is interesting, he is a good lecturer, but the class overall was disorganized. Bad TA too.
Really funny and great lecturer. A good amount of reading in the class, but you don't have to take the final if you get 90% on HW and quizzes, which is not that hard. History major or not, take this class. You will not be disappointed.
Most conscientious yet entertaining lecturer at UC Santa Cruz. He is charismatic, helpful, and very passionate about the subjects. Professor Christy has been the best educator I have ever encountered in my life.
Dynamic, charming, and entertaining lecturer. Never lost his flow with the material in class yet was always able to make everyone laugh and feel comfortable yet stay analytical. Love the new system concerning the final exam. You don't have to take it if you score 90% on HW. However, the online part of class was horribly disorganized and ambiguous.
Christy is a great professor. He was so devoted to ensuring that the students understood the content. I loved this class, especially since along with Professor Yang, the class was fun and informative. The class had a fair amount of reading, but go to section, do the source worksheets, and you won't have to take a midterm or final. Guest speakers+!
He is incredibly helpful and understanding. This class was kind of boring because of the content, but I really cannot wait for his upper division courses. He IS going on sebatical next year, along with his wife and fellow badass professor, Aso though.
Professor Alan Christy is by far one of the best professors I've had the privileged to listen and learn from. His duel collaboration with Alice Yang not only worked, but also made the class ten times more interesting than I anticipated. Don't be afraid to ask questions, and be prepared for all the jokes Professor Christy cracks during lecture.
Alan's class is very informal yet wonderfully informative. Changes your mind about everything. He's very passionate about his subject and his students, and it shows in the way he approaches students and encourages everybody's research projects. That being said, if you want an organized class, maybe this isn't the one for you, it was very on-the-fly
Took this class for a GE and by far one of my favorite classes at UCSC so far. Great, informative, and very entertaining lectures. Expect to keep up with lectures or you may fall behind. Section attendance is also mandatory and may help with the essays.
Took East-Asia for a GE and honestly one of the best classes I ever took at UCSC. Professor Christy gives amazing and hilarious lectures, however, this means that classes are mandatory. Take this class if you want to learn more about the relations between East Asian countries and also to analyze them.
Super structured, easy to follow class. Lectures are not mandatory but he does give participation credit for showing up, and the same thing with sections. Go to sections always, because they will definitely help with the essays. Only grades are 3 10-question quizzes on Canvas and 3 essays. Took this my very first quarter, and it was a super easy A.
It is a roller coaster of endless quizzes and homework and readings that nobody with the intention of earning GE would find enjoyable...
Hilarious, kind, caring, and accessible. Extremely friendly. His TAs are also great people, and grade generously, are willing to help you with anything. Homework is seldom difficult or in large quantities. Classes are fun, not boring slide-reading. Connects topics with real-life and provides a personal experience or useful anecdotes.
Prof. Chrisy was so amazing during this hellish spring quarter. Beyond understanding when students were having difficultly. Online lectures were made as interesting as they could be online, watch the lectures and so some of the reading youre getting an A.
Professor Christy assigned an unreasonable amount of readings, lecture videos, and other assignments every single week. Everything was unpredictable, and nothing had a rubric. Grading seemed arbitrary and he is incredibly hard to connect with. Lecture videos are not captioned and no one seemed to care that this was an issue.
Prof Christy is one of the greats! The structure of the class makes it really easy to stay engaged and you know, actually learn. The material we covered stuck with me much better bc of how well-structured this course was. The lectures were really meaningful, and it was never hard for me to pay attention during them. Definitely take a class w him!!!
He's overall just a really great guy and his lectures are really enjoyable and engaging. He's super kind and understanding and pretty laid back. He's really passionate about what he teaches. My only issue would be the slight disorganization. There is a decent amount of readings, but they're really easy and interesting for the most part.
I went into this class really interested in Okinawa and left hating the class and everything Christy does. Clear directions in assignments? Nope. Busy work with almost no point? Check. I got a good grade but I worked my butt off, this class made me cry three times and there was on AVERAGE 6-9 hours of lecture videos a week:(Still love the topic tho
Easiest class ever, no tests. Quizzes on readings before every class but it's pretty easy to do them without reading the stuff and just using what you know on the topic. Group project was the chunk of the grade so make sure you have a good and active group. Mandatory attendance but you can just do other work in class
He's a great professor! :) I absolutely loved the class and his lectures are engaging. Easy assignments, although some feels like busywork but I don't mind. Would recommend this class if you want an easy ge.
Great professor! I loved his lectures :) they were really engaging and fun. Easy grader too, although some assignments felt like busywork but I don't mind. Would recommend this class if you want an easy ge.
Class was easy. Quizzes before each class based off of reading from books you're supposed to purchase. Attendance is online so it's easy to get it without actually going. Recommend for a GE.
Alan Christy is a legend. Lectures are great and the readings are incredibly well choosen. The work is enough to reinforce the material but never overwhelming. He genuinely cares and is incredibly passionate. This class should be educational and entertaining for even the least history inclined, while being rigorous and informative for majors.
