He's somewhat interesting teacher, however, he's NOT open-minded! He tells people their opinions are wrong. AND his quizzes are confusing! He's always making an answer both true and false. And on the final, 1/3 is written, and 2/3 if multiple choice. His questions are not clear, and hard to get an A
Gives very clear notes. Know the notes and you'll make an A on all the quizzes and test. Very open minded. He likes to get eveyones opinion. I never bought the book and studied the notes for a few hours and made a 83 on the first test and a 91 on the final...not bad for the amount of time I put in.
I hated the clss. I managed to make a B but only with extra credit. Nice enough teacher, but unclear. 2 tests, 2 quizes, and tons of HW which adds extra points to final grade.
VERY BORING CLASS. IF YOU DON'T HAVE TO TAKE IT DON'T. HE'S NICE ENOUGH BUT THE CLASS IS SO NOT INTERESTING AND IT'S ALL DEBATE. AVOID, AVOID, AVOID!!!!!!!!!!
He was a GREAT teacher! He gave extremely clear notes... just go to class everytime, read over your notes, and have an open mind. I've made A's on all the assignments except for 2 pop quizes. Just go to class and this class can be very interesting. Go Clune!
He tries his best to help you understand his way of teachings of the class. Make sure you do all your homework assignments at the end of the year it helps bump your grade up. Test aren't very easy so make sure you study.
This class is fun, but you better study (and I don't mean cram!) Class discussions are always interesting and entertaining! His tests are essay and/or short answer- no multiple choice! They are fairly easy IF you know your stuff!
I really enjoyed this class and I was against most of the issues we talked about (abortion, euthanasia, etc.). He is really funny but dont be late or talk while he or others are trying to talk. His notes are clear and if you read over them a couple times b/f the test you will make an A. Quizzes are a bit hard but they dont count that much anyway.
Very clear notes. Not a bad class at all, overall a great professor, really knows his stuff and conveys it farely well. Relies a lot on class room participation to fill in spare time between notes. Talks about some crazy scenarios that make you contradict yourself, but he is a philosophy professor. Overall, not bad.
That class was so boring and he writes his notes on the board but his hand writing is HORRIBLE. You have to read the book or you'll get left behind. Does a lot of pop quiz and his test are all short answer and essay. My advice is to stay away from him
Honestly, I hated that class. I really do not care for philosophy though. His notes helped me understand what the philosophers meant, but it was very boring. Don't miss class because you need his notes for every test. I never really read the book. All I can say is...thank God I am done!
Dr. CLune was one to test your comprehension abilites. YOU DO have to read and understand what you read. He makes sense of a lot of things philosophical. Im not particularly interested in PHL, but this class was hard, confusing, and a lot of work. Written answer tests, too.
He had a very weird method of teaching. Very different from other professors. He wasn't that helpful. Everything that was on the tests were from the book. So basically it was pointless to even go to class to listen to him preach.
He pretty much does a lot of the work for you. the class is slow paced so he gives you time to understand things. he'll assign homework and the next time you meet you will spend the whole time going over it so you don't really do much. after the written tests he allows you to talk to him about your answers and will sometimes up your grade.
I was hesitant to take this prof at first, but my friend talked me into it, and i ended up making a higher grade than she. But several people don't like him because they see him as hard. Critical thinking is a hard class - you have to think! But Clune makes it easier I would say. He's very laid back.
Clune is very disorganized, but a laid back teacher. As he rambles he is very boring and monotone. He isn't the best teacher and i wouldnt suggest taking him.
Awesome professor. You need to read, but hes quite clear with what he talks about. Always asking if you have any questions. Funny guy! Im going to take another one of his classes.
Very slow paced class. his notes arent very clear. I was first excited to take him after great reveiws, then after taking him I wouldnt suggest him.
I considered him to be an extremely good teacher. If you read the book, go to class, and do the homework, there's no way you can get a lower grade than a B. Very intelligent and helpful. He also has a cool accent and uses chinchillas a lot in his examples.
These other reviewers are idiots. Clune is the best Phil professor at SHSU. Fair's insane hard, Bradley's an ass, Sanford's alot of work... In 263, I never even bought the book. He doesn't try to trick you on tests like others. He is clear and brings it down very well. My #1 Phil recommendation. Take him for 372 and anything else he ever teaches.
The class had some interesting topics to discuss. Attendance does not count against you but it is taken every class. There is plenty of homework, group work, class discussions and two papers to write. However, this gives you plenty of opportunities to bring your grade up. Teacher was more than willing to work with you.
Great teacher! I took his moral problems class and he does not try to make you see his point of view! His notes are organized and easy to understand but if he tells you he will pick up an assignment on a certain day, he will. If you can follow instructions at all you can make at least a B in this class.
WOW! THIS MAN IS BY FAR HAS TO BE THE BEST PHIL. TEACHER. I NEVER WANTED TO TAKE PHIL. BUT I HAD TO, HIS CLASS IS OK. I LEARNED A LOT OF NEW THINGS. HE GIVES EXTRA CREDIT AT THE END,DO IT BECAUSE IT ADDS AT LEAST 5 POINTS TO YOUR OVERALL GRADE. IF YOU SCORE A BAD GRADE AND YOU GO TALK TO HIM AND YOU SHOW HIM THAT YOU UNDERSTAND HE'LL BUMP UR GRADE.
WOW! HE MIGHT BE EASIER IN OTHER SUBJECTS BUT IN PHILOSOPHY OF SCIENCE HE IS VERY COMPLICATED. HE USES BAD EXAMPLES, NEVER GIVES STUDENTS DIRECTLY WHAT HE IS LOOKING FOR IN THE ESSAY HOMEWORK HE ASSIGNS. BAD TEACHER BETTER THAN FAIR, BUT OVERALL HE IS NOT THE BEST TEACHER PARTLY BECAUSE HE IS VERY INCOHERENT
Best class I ever took.
Again, the best class I ever took.
Amazing! Mr. Clune is funny, smart and very helpful! Couldn't ask for anyone better. Test can be rather tricky with the wording of the questions so watch out.
I LOVED his class for contemporary moral issues! He's super eccentric and so funny. He says lots of weird stuff, and gives crazy examples. Just have a positive attitude and you'll have a good time. READ. If you read you'll make an A. but he always posts lecture powerpoints online, so no worries if you miss a few days.
Smart, funny, knows the material. You must read the book. The book is needed everyday in class. Do all your HW. There is extra credit. The tests are tricky (Watch the wording). Overall I was happy with his teaching structure. I will be taking Dr. Clune for Philosophy 372.
If you want a good GPA dont take this class. This guy is horrible. A lot of people find his jokes funny, they werent. He DOES NOT give extra credit. He isnt clear on whats going to be on the test. His lectures are super boring. Take another class, not Clune. Im warning you now
I had to take Critical Thinking twice because the course is extremely difficult regardless of who teaches it. I had Dr. Clune the second time around, he can be frustrating at times because he can be inconsistent in teaching but he does his best to explain why. But he drops the lowest test grade and 4 lowest daily grades.
Very helpful. Engaged students in acting out events which was funny to watch. Loved it when people asked questions. Tests are hard but if you pay attention in class and do a little bit of studying it wasn't terrible. Overall loved this class
Dr. Clune is a very quaint individual with a lot of knowledge on the subject. I personally found his class enjoyable, as he likes to play the devil's advocate to spur conversation. Tests are pretty straight forward, study the notes/powerpoints, do just fine. Enjoyed him.
Can miss 5 classes. He is as interesting as he can be sometimes its boring. If anyone asks a question on a review he emails the answer to everyone! very helpful. tests not too bad if you study the review. He lets you sleep in class..lol laid back. I got a B but put hardly any effort. You wont use book, he will tell you to read but I never needed to
HATED HIS CLASS!!! If you can take anyone else, then do it! He wasn't a horrible teacher but he was BORING!!! His jokes AREN'T funny, his lectures lead no where, and he repeats himself a lot...I did not enjoy his class at all! Especially when we started taking about animal cruelty! Anyways overall he was ok but not an enjoyable class at all!
Dr. Clune was AWESOME!! If you read the book, take notes, and study the power points, you will get an A in this class easily!
I took Clune for Contemporary Moral Issues, and he was okay, so I decided to take him again. I had Critical Thinking, and not only was it full of difficult concepts, but Clune wasn't very clear, nor flexible. I wouldn't take him again honestly. He changed powerpoints while he was teaching, and even if you attempt to do extra credit, he grades HARD.
Dr. Clune is very nice and he is also very funny. He will work with you if you need help. Critical Thinking is a hard course but if you pay attention and do the homework you'll do fine. This is not a blow off class and sometimes Clune is really confusing. But I would definitely recommend him.
Contemporary Moral Issues. I found the subject matter to be interesting but sometimes hard to understand how Clune would compare old philosophers points of view with the current moral issues. Overall, NOT a blowoff class. You need to pay attention and study hard, but if you attend class, read the book, and study well, you will do well.
I don't know if Critical Thinking is hard with any professor or if it is just Dr. Clune. This was one of the hardest classes I have ever taken. Dr. Clune will try to help when you have questions but the subject matter is so confusing that he might just confuse you further. STUDY, STUDY, STUDY! And it might be beneficial to get a tutor too.
PROFESSOR CLUNE MADE THIS CLASS SUPER HARD AND ATTENDANCE ISNT ADDED TO YOUR GRADE ITS A HARD CLASS FOR SURE!!!!
The WE course was very hard he thinks that just bc it's WE means that you have to memorize a 1 1/2 pages of theories for the first exam alone. People make in the low teens out of 100. dont take him
I had him for Contemporary Moral Issues and honestly, if you go to class and listen and study a little before the test, you'll do just fine!
This is one of the hardest classes I've taken at SHSU. I regret taking him because he was so monotone and boring. The tests are super hard you have to study for HOURS in order to get a decent grade. He doesn't offer extra credit or awards points for attendance. If you can avoid taking him do it otherwise your semester will be long and dreadful
This class was extremely hard, but I am super glad I was able to take this class. I would recommend only those who don't mind reading and intense critical thinking.
He is very helpful when you ask questions. you only get 5 absences which is cool and we only had 5 tests that included the final. The lowest test grade is dropped even if its the final exam. His are very hard. He will have 4-6 answer choices and the difference between the very similar answers is very technical. You have to know word for word.
The material is very difficult, but this professor was fantastic. He does a very good job of taking confusing theories and putting them into easier to understand terms. Some students got annoyed with his constant reference to chinchillas, but I thought the quirkiness was funny. Knowledgeable in subject and loves it, very kind and helpful.
Always has Starbucks tea and Converse (and a smile). He's goofy and unbiased on serious moral issues that the class will rant and rave about. Very professional. Would definitely take him again.
Good Professor, explains things in a way in which you will be able to understand them. You definitely need to go to class as much as possible if not the PowerPoint will not make much sense. All 4 test are multiple choice, no writing assignments. The final is optional which was great. God Bless if you decide to to take him.
Contemporary Moral Issues. This class was difficult, but Dr. Clune made the class enjoyable and enjoys feedback from his students. We discussed touchy topics, but Dr. Clune will not discuss his personal views and sticks with the views of other philosophers. Take notes on what he says, review the lecture slides, and you will do okay in his class.
Contemporary and moral issues. Professor Clune was definitely one of my favorite teachers! He was very clear on the material. He gives reviews & gives you a chance to ask questions before the exam day. You do not need the book AT ALL. Don't but it. Overall good professor. 4 exams & 2 papers. If you pay attention and study you'll do fine.
10% grade is in-class quizzes every week. 45% grade is midterm. 45% grade is final. That's it. I flunked my midterm because I didn't realize he wanted his words from his notes repeated in my paper. I did better on the final because I just copied and pasted his stuff. Would NOT take him again if I had to... Only class that made me cry.
I have much respect for Dr. Clune. His exams are more challenging, but his lectures are great! His lectures involve class input (not mandatory) as he gives genuinely unbiased and professional input on the discussions. He does not give homework, his lectures are interesting, and his exams are more difficult. He also seems like such a nice guy!
While Prof Clune is a genuine, informed, and teaches an interesting class. His exams are very terrible. While the class encourages discussions, tests couldnt careless what you think, how you think, and your reasoning. You need to know what person said what and what their views were. I hated the exams so much. I may not take Clune again.
While his lectures can be humorous, don't take that as a grain of salt. The tests are insanely difficult and require amazing amounts of studying.
TAKE NOTE: Dr. Clune has 2 types of philosophy classes. A writing enhanced course and a regular one. I accidentally ended up in writing enhanced even though I didn't need to, and it was a ton of work. Only the final is multiple choice. 3 tests consisting of long/short answer and essay. Has 2 1200 word papers. Few pop quizzes but he tells you when.
He is nice and has great lectures, however his tests a very difficult and can trick you. You really have to know the material in this class. He takes off points for absences so do not skip.
Interactive with the class on important issues.
Professor Clune is very insightful when it comes to explaining the views and points of philosophers' arguments that we studied. We had two papers and some quizzes. In the papers, you pick a topic that has been covered, give your viewpoint and utilize the philosophical arguments. He thoroughly covers what we're supposed to read in his lectures.
Clune/ Phil 2306 was one of the hardest the hardest classes Ive ever took. Although the lectures are interesting the test will leave you distrout. HARD test and a TOUGH grader is a bad mix. Be prepared to read a lot and i hope you have good memory other wise dont pick him as your professor. I knew it was all down hill after test 1.
I took Dr. Cline at Lone Star. He is good at what he knows. You have to listen carefully to what he says and study his powerpoint's. Also his tests are pretty difficult. The test will blow you away, so yea. His study guides is somewhat helpful. I'm lucky to a B- out of him well earned. Book is somewhat necessary. I wouldn't recommend to take him :/
His humor is dry but overall not a bad professor. You dont have to read but it will definitely help you for the tests. You really need to study for the tests, you have to know who said what and what they would say.
Makes the class way more difficult than it needs to be. Really tough grader on papers and will find a problem with anything. Tests are extremely hard and he does a terrible job of explaining the material. Would definitely not take him again.
Does not explain things well at all. VERY tough grader. Cannot understand what he is saying. Tests never match his notes. Tries to be funny and engaging... doesn't do a good job. Super strict with attendance. Overall, would never recommend him to anyone or take him again.
Very very unnecessarily difficult. Lectures are long and super boring. Also, tests are extremely difficult. Very sweet guy but just is not good at explaining the material altogether
Professor Clune is a nice professor. However, his lectures are not really interesting and can talk a lot of nonsense that is not about the topic. I took this class halfway in class, then when coronavirus hit, he did not do a very good job in transitioning online. All his tests were terrible and most questions are indirectly taken from the slides.
He is extremely redundant in the way he speaks, and in the way, he does his lectures. As a result, he goes over the same subject multiple times and each time is even more confusing than the last. I literally know less about philosophy at the end of his class than I did at the start of it. He also only gives out group work and assigns groups.
He grades based on how well you follow instructions, not on your understanding of the course. The class is based on you following what he says, instead of the application of the knowledge, which is not learning.
The professor is very unproblematic but he honestly doesn't know how to teach. he usually reads off of the powerpoints. his tests are extremely hard and you basically have to relearn everything every unit if you wish to pass the class.
How do you give a 75 on an group assignment when asked for our own opinion? Some material not covered in class are on test. Doesnt specify what he wants us to read and expects us to know without even telling us. Mandatory class participation during COVID. Terrible PowerPoints, looks like it was made by a 3rd grader. Unorganized. Grades rough.
If you put forth the effort, this class is an easy A. He does an amazing job.
His feedback is usually very rude. He does not lecture in a way that is understandable because he goes all over the place. He also already expects you to know everything without lecturing.
You're better off throwing yourself through a glass window repeatedly everyday than to try and make sense of this class. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS FOR A SUMMER TERM! Find someone else. Between his confusion lectures, the group work, written heavy tests, the way things are worded can all trip you up. Just DON'T add more stress by taking this class.
Take my advice, DO NOT BOTHER! DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS YOU WILL BE STRESSED AND CONFUSED! I ended up dropping the class because he does not give good feedback, the tests are written and if they aren't what he wants you will fail. Even with the handouts and book you will be LOST! If Philosophy is not your major, find something else.
Professor Clune was at times uncertain of his own material. He definitely takes attendance. He uses bb for tests. If you show interest, ask questions, participate and do the work then you will be okay. He drops the lowest exam grade. Homeworks are done in a group he creates. The material is challenging but you can use all powerpoints and notes.
He gets off topic and will stay there. All assignments and exams are on bb. The exams have information from lectures and the book. He doesn't go over the book material only his PowerPoint. He has jokes. NO ELECTRONICS IN HIS CLASS OR COUNTED AS ABSENT. There are long awkward pauses during the lectures at times.
The work he gives is not hard however it is boring. Attendance matters only because another wise no one would ever show up. He will drop your grade by a letter if you do not attend a certain amount of classes. He will also count you absent if you are on a device. He grades hard on the group essays. At least there are not many assignments.
Good professor, easy work, test are okay if you go over material
He's a really nice guy, but he explains things so much they kinda become confusing. No devices in class. And he doesn't go over everything that'll be on the test. Reading is a requirement. Starting engaged really helps with the boredom.
I was excited to take a philosophy course, and I believed I would've had a much better experience had I not taken this course with professor Clune. All of the assignments and test will have elements pulled from notes, and sometimes he would move too fast, and refused to go back a slide, because it, "Interrupted the momentum of the class."
you will never know what's going on. I never have any idea where the questions on the tests are coming from, I think he just closes his eyes and picks a random grade for group work, and he's a professor who is clearly smart but not meant to teach. also if you don't go to class you will fail as he takes off points if you don't show up!!!
Really easy class. Attendance is mandatory, if you have less than 3 absences he adds 15 points to a test. all tests and assignments are on blackboard. really nice guy, really understanding. the lectures are a bit boring but if you pay attention it should be an easy course.
Honestly Professor Clune wasn't that bad of a teacher. I would take him again just because I feel comfortable with his grading and the way he does things. He has like 4-5 tests and 4-5 group assignments, the tests aren't too bad. Just pay attention, they're online so essentially they are open note. Group work is super easy. No phones in class.
Did not enjoy this class at all. Really obsessed with chinchillas for some reason. Slideshows look like they're made by a middle schooler. Attendance is mandatory and no phones are allowed, meaning you can't even skip or ignore the most boring lectures in the world when he puts the notes online anyway. TONS of really awkward silences.
Very easy class! The only thing is attendance IS MANDATORY, it will affect your grade if you miss more then 5 classes. Phones aren't allowed, but its important to pay attention. Sometimes he gets on rants and everyone zones out. He LOVES chinchillas, so get ready to hear about them everyday in every test and assignment.
Dr. Clune is a great person, but his lectures can feel super slow sometimes. Participating in class helps the time go by faster. He tends to grade group assignments hard, so make sure your answers are always very thorough. You get extra credit if you miss 3 classes or fewer.
Professor Clune is kinda funny and a really good teacher. But the group assignments have a ridiculous minimum word count and the tests are pretty difficult. I did enjoy the class though.
there isn't many graded assignments and most are quizzes. The group projects are too long for simple subjects, and all notes have to be taken on paper, he does not allow laptops or any electronics in his class and will stop class completely if you have one. If you miss class, he takes points away from you.
Dr. Clune is a great person. That being said his lectures are going to put you to sleep. Attendance is mandatory, but the tests are online and not proctored, so you will get a good grade on the tests. he try's his hardest to be funny and engaging, but if your class is full of non-engaging students, this class will be boring. I 100% do recommend
Hes a good professor, and tries to make the classe as engaging as he can. The class is sometimes boring, and he doesnt allow any kind of technology. The assignments are open note online non-proctered tests and group projects/essays. The groups are random and are hard if you have people that dont care, so you better hope you have good group members.
As a person, he's chill. Exams are 80% of grade and no multiple choice. Constant group work so choose who you work with wisely. He never really gives you a straight answer and likes to see if you can figure it out, overall a really tough class to pass but its possible. Only 4 exams and no quizzes so you better make those grades count.
He was fine. The only thing that was annoying was that attendance was mandatory. There are only 8 grades in total, 4 tests and 4 group works. Tests are easy though so I wouldn't worry about that. He chooses your groups. The GW was pretty easy, like 4 questions 200 words each answer. I recommend it's an easy class. You dont really NEED your textbook
His lectures can be very boring. It is important to go to class because he does have an attendance policy which will be in the syllabus. There is no extra credit so don't ask I did, and he quickly said no. He would have up to 3 group projects in the semester and 4 tests.
Such a sweet professor, but his class will literally make you go insane. The subject itself will make your brain hurt, but he tries his best to explain everything with good examples. Please avoid any 9am classes as it's impossible to stay awake. Exams are online and straight from the PowerPoints. Would take him again, but not for philosophy!
Such a kind professor, attendance was mandatory but if you had a valid reason he would excuse. Homework's were straight from the book and graded based on participation. Tests were all online and open book open note which was very helpful since he would upload his lecture slides just in case you missed anything. He loves to talk about Chinchillas!
Tests arent difficult, group assignments take some thinking, miss class and he takes points off of your semester grade
Easy class. We only had three group projects and 4 tests. test are online, open note, at home, so easy. the hardest thing is the group project, hes tough, but as long as you meet the word count you'll be fine. He says to read the textbook, but you dont need to. i didnt. so dont waste your money. You can skip 4 classes before you get counted off.
