Way to hard considering the material. I knew the material well and failed the 1st two test along with everyone else. New to Clemson so I guess he's trying to "prove himself." Trick questions on test are very annoying. Avoid if possible.
Lecture style class. I failed the first test with a 52 and still managed to get a B. There are only 4 tests and a final and you drop one of the tests. You really have to teach yourself the material. There is so much he goes over and his powerpoints are boring so it is hard to pay attention. Go to class though.
New to Clemson and trying to prove himself. I passed every test, barely. Studied my butt off and even bought the book to study with, none of it helped. His tests are multiple choice but all questions include "None of the above" and "All of the above". He is very nice and helpful in lab though.
Amazing, helpful, and willing to help students. Goes out of his way to help.
This guy gets a bad rap. He's truly a great professor and is always willing to help. He makes lectures fun and relates them to our generation. There are 4 exams and a Final. He drops the lowest score. If you are willing to take good notes and study the material, you will pass fine. All test material comes from lecture, you don't even need the book!
You need to go to class to pass this class. All the material on the test is on the notes. A good teacher overall really helpful
Dr. Coulson is a good teacher who is always willing to help you out. He doesn't curve test, but will give opportunities for EC. You NEED to go to class though it's not required. I missed a few and still managed to make an A and exempt the exam. You don't use the textbook or MastGEO. Just study the powerpoints and you'll be fine.
You do need the book bc he literally leaves key definitions out of his PowerPoint in order to make you come to class. Someone started selling study guides, that's how coveted the notes are. Worked HARD and got a B. did all the EC quizzes, very helpful. He is helpful too.
Dr. Coulson definitely knew what he was talking about. ALWAYS go to his class. Most of his tests come from the lectures. Dr. Coulson was always very helpful, whether if you asked a question in class or stopped by his office. He always gives bonus quizzes for each test to help boost your grade. I would recommend his class :)
Definitely go to all classes because test questions come from what he says during class, not so much from powerpoint. Test questions are also very tricky. Take someone else if possible.
Dr. C is a brillant man and really knows what he is talking about. The key to success is going to class everyday and paying attention to his lecture and power points. I bought the book, and never used it. I made an A using solely my notes. keep in mind I did keep detailed notes. Not an easy A by far, yet very obtainable if you put forth the effort
If you need a science credit, take this class. If you go to class and pay attention, you'll most likely at least get a B. I did and I'm horrible at science. He gives a little extra credit too.
Good class for to cover a science requirement. Above all, GO TO CLASS. It isn't required, but that's the real way to do well. I got a B without much work. I'm kicking myself. Had I studied harder it's an easy A. I recommend him.
Dr. coulson is a nice guy who likes to talk about lego starwars and avatar haha.. but seriously i understood every time I paid attention. He gives opportunity for extra credit. I never had to use the book (don't buy it). As long as you pay attention and actually go to class you will do fine. He was also available for help outside of class.
Great professor. is really interested in the stuff he's teaching. keeps the class interesting with jokes and stories. take this class!
Very straightforward: go to class, take good notes, study the week before the exams, and you'll pull an easy A. Don't bother with buying the textbook; he tests strictly from his lectures. Some extra credit opportunities but not many. Good science gen ed if you're not good with chem/phys/etc.
This class is real easy if you apply yourself a little. I made an A and studied a few days before each exam. Straight foward, 4 exams and final exam, 6 bonus points possible for each exam, just make sure to go to class and listen. Definitely my easiest class of the semester. Exempting the final exam made exam week easier also.
Very easy class. GO to class and you will get an A. I got an A average before the final so he exempted me from taking that. Very boring but he actually knows what he's talking about and if you listen you will learn the material. Dont buy the book.
If you can devote an hour a day 4 days before each exam, you can get an A. No book, no homework. Just copy notes ALL CLASS, then study them for the exam. Simple material. Its pretty straight forward...study and get an easy A.
The class goes along with the notes he gives in class. I never touched my textbook, and you really don't need it. He's helpful and available outside of class if you have questions. He's not a bad teacher, and tries to keep the class interesting.
Not a good teacher, his tests are all based on whether or not you memorized the notes. He loves to throw in trick questions. Went to every class, barely got a B. If you don't memorize everything don't expect an A.
The key to his class: go to EVERY class and take notes the entire time. He likes to throw in trick questions every now and then, but once you're used to his test format its pretty easy. I made an A on every test and all I did was go to class and study 2-3 days in advance. The material is very straight forward. He's a good teacher for the subject
Do NOT take this class if you are a science major and looking for an easy A!!! You will not have the time to memorize the abundance of material. It is not very possible to do well other hard classes and make an A. With that being said, if you are a business or education major, take this class and put in the time you have to make an A!
tries to trick you on tests, spend the whole class taking notes and if you miss a word prepare to miss a question on the test. not an easy A or even a B, prides himself on how many kids fail the first test. avoid him unless this class is mandatory
I hated Dr. Coulson. He's smug and thinks geology is a priority for every person in the 200-person lecture hall. I'm not in a science major and this class was way harder than it needs to be. It's definitely not rocks for jocks, and if you're not interested in science stay far away. The tests are all trick questions and the material is abundant.
You will not get an easy A. You probably won't even get an A. Instead you'll bust it just to keep up with the material, and leave a test feeling confident, only to find that you missed every trick question and got a 75. Tests are set up to be tricks, and nothing else. Science majors with not a lot of time to spare, avoid this class!
I truly enjoyed Dr. Coulson. He is a great guy and a really good professor when it comes to simply learning. However, he is EXTREMELY tricky with his tests and really cheats his students with his way of calculating your final grade. You really learn, but it is not a class to take for an easy A.
Boring class, Boring mono-tone teacher, hard material. He sets his tests up to trick you. Stopped going to class after the third week, just went to take the tests. Made a B. Just be "smart" about how you take the test and you will do fine. Lab's were equally as terrible. But for never going to class i cannot complain about my grade.
Bad prof, bases his tests around tricking you, very pedantic questions, enjoys making the material much harder than it needs to be. You'll learn, but it'll be tough to ace the tests even if you know the stuff. Overall a waste of time for a 101 class, guy takes himself way too seriously, and it shows.
Definitely not an easy A class. Prepare to work your butt off and still earn a C for the course. He purposely tries to trick you on tests and is proud of the fact that over half of his students make F on the first exam. He knows the material he just doesnt know how to make the students understand it.
Prepare to struggle all semester for a B in the class. Tests are centered around tricking you. Not an easy A. Recommend someone else.
GO TO CLASS. Every one of the tests is on material straight from the lecture. There is no textbook so you have to rely on your own notes. Never assume something he said in class won't be on the test. Very helpful when needed.
No homework. No previous tests. No notes posted. Nothing to help you study. You get what you right down from his lectures, and that's it.
Dr. Coulson is a great teacher. The class is centered around four tests worth 25% each, with one of the tests being dropped for the final. If you make an A average on all four tests, you exempt the final. While his tests can be pretty tricky, his class is fairly easy to get an A as long as you take good notes in class and are good at memorizing.
This class was interesting. I'll give him that. but it is honestly the most difficult class you could possibly take at a 101 level. you have to memorize every single thing he says in class or you won't get an a.
As a non-science major, especially one with no interest in science, this was probably the most bearable and manageable science course. Coulson was a big part of that who added humor to a relatively dull subject matter and was great at teaching the material to make it easy as possible. Tests were hard but doable and the lab was very simple
If you want an A, clear your schedule, however, failing this class should only be a concern for people who do not take it serious. There is roughly a letter grade's worth of questions on each test from things in lecture that seemed trivial. WRITE DOWN AND STUDY EVERYTHING HE SAYS. This guy teaches geology like a med school weed-out course.
His lectures are interesting but his tests are tricky for sure. I usually studied 2-3 days before the test and made notecards out of all the lecture notes then memorized them. I got an A and exempted the final. You have to go to class though and type every word he says. Not a super hard class but not rocks for jocks either. Coulson is really cool.
Dr. Coulson is a good lecturer, however he crams the hour and fifteen minute class full of facts (and corny dad jokes) . You'll take notes the WHOLE time, because all test questions come directly from lecture- no need to buy the textbook. Test questions are tricky so start studying early, not an easy Gen ED but I worked hard and made a B.
Coulson is a decent professor, but you must attend class (or borrow notes) if you want to pass. He lectures all class so be ready to take notes for the full duration of class. He also gives extra credit on every single test. Overall, if you study hard, an A is definitely achievable.
tests are difficult so take good notes, focus on what he says in class, and start studying days ahead of time but avoid this class in general if possible
This was a tough class for me, only because I didn't realize the trick to passing the tests until it was too late. I failed the first two tests and then realized that the trick to passing was memorizing the lectures. Once I did that, I passed the last two tests and the final. The lectures are interesting and he spices them up with corny jokes.
Seriously if you don't go to class you will not pass unless you have amazing friends in the same class period as you. Bring your computer to class with the PP downloaded (so much faster than writing). Study EVERYTHING. If you have an A in the class you exempt the final. If you don't, KEEP YOUR OLD TESTS AND ANSWERS. He uses those on the final.
Great teacher, just tricky test...
Dr. Coulson is the best! He gives great notes during lecture, that he later posts online. To do well in his class make sure you read over your notes a couple of days before the tests and show up to lecture. He gives 4 exams and one final; however, if you have an A average with the 4 exams, you don't have to take the final.
Coulson is a great teacher. His is very funny and makes his lectures enjoyable. That being said, your grade is 4 midterms (1 gets dropped) and a final. Questions are multiple choice and come straight from his lectures. Some questions may be confusing and there is a lot of memorization, but it is not a huge hassle and shouldn't stress you out.
Great Professor! Geology isn't a bad class at all and the material is interesting. Coulsan's powerpoints are great and exams are very fair! You don't need the book and all the tests are from the lectures. Go to class and study a bit before tests and youll do fine!
Hes got great dad jokes and is a really great guy. His tests are just like the powerpoints and the concepts are easy, so if you put in effort you can easily make an A.
Coulson has a great sense of humor, and makes all of the information very interesting. As long as you pay attention and take good notes, it's an easy A. I always looked forward to attending this class.
If you would like to experience 75 minutes of boring 45-60 slide PowerPoints then this is your class. Pretty hard GenEd, mostly because half of the exam questions are trick questions and there's just so much material. He also doesn't upload the full PowerPoints.
Awesome teacher. Lectures are heavy and you must take solid notes to do well on the tests, but you get exactly what you've earned. Class is extremely interesting and he adds humor and real world issues to make you actually enjoy the time. Overall really great.
Dr Coulson is my favorite professor at the school. That said, he expects things from you as a student. If you arent attending class and actively taking lecture notes, you will not succeed. Attendance is not mandatory, but if you want to do very well you should attend. He is extremely helpful in office hrs plus is very interesting as a lecturer.
Dr. Coulson is an all around guy. His exams come directly from his PowerPoint slides but BEWARE sometimes he adds extra notes that are not on the PowerPoint slides. If you study, attend class, and pay attention, you'll most likely get a grade of a B. No homework, only 3 exams. Also, he drops your lowest exam grade!
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. He teaches like it's med school. Ultimately, it's only the test grades you have and his tests are so tricky (despite him saying "there are no trick questions if you study"). Despite being a good lecturer and maybe even a cool, if dorky, guy, he makes you know basically EVERYTHING he ever says
Anyone saying his tests are hard just didn't put in the time and effort to make a good grade. A lot of material is covered and included on the tests, but as long as you attend class, take good notes, and look over them 3-4 days leading up to the test, the tests should be a piece of cake. Plus, no homework and an A averageexempt final!
This guy centers his whole class around being fair. He's extremely clear about grading and extra credit from the very beginning. He's also pretty funny and gives good lectures, but you need to sit up front if you want to hear him in a bigger room.
Dr. Coulson is one of the best lecturers I have ever encountered. He makes his classes engaging and interesting (and tells roughly six dad jokes a day) while still conveying a ton of information. The tests are not made to trick you, but you do have to take good notes in class and review them before testing days or you won't do well.
Only has 4 test grades for the semester. Does offer weekly extra credit which helps ur grade a lot. His tests can be tricky because there is so much information to learn and some of his questions are VERY detail oriented. If you don't study for the tests, you won't pass. You can skip class, but make sure u get notes from someone who pays attention!
I would not take his class again. He is a very bad lecturer because you cannot hear him and his slides have no information on them what so ever. If you do not show up to the lectures and listen very carefully you will not pass. Tests are also very hard and have very knit picky questions. Do not take this class unless you are interested in it.
You really have to study for this class. He leaves information out of the powerpoints he posts, too, so you will be missing information if you don't come to class and take good notes.
You have to go to literally every class and pay attention to every single word he says in order to do well. His tests are so specific that the things you don't think you'll need to know, are on the tests. DO NOT TAKE THIS JUST BECAUSE YOU NEED A SCIENCE AND THOUGHT IT WOULD BE EASIER THAN BIOLOGY OR CHEMISTRY. IT IS NOT JUST ROCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Dr. Coulson is a very nice guy and he has all the geology memes. His tests are exactly what is on the lectures, no need for the book at all. I recommend printing out the power points and adding the info that is not on the power points. The power points are informative but you need to write down much of what he says. Tests are not too bad.
Takes most specific details from lectures and makes questions on exams. Studied hours on end for every test and somehow ended with a B. Take Chem or Bio before this class.
Dr. Coulson is a great professor. Attendance is not mandatory, but you should definitely go to class if you want to pass this class. His lectures are pretty interesting, and he gives you good points to write in your notes. His tests are all multiple choice but very detailed. Definitely need to study. He is a nice man and will help you if needed.
Awesome class, awesome professor! Textbook and attendance are both optional. If you go to class and take decent notes, you'll get an A. Offers extra credit throughout the semester. Very straightforward about exactly what will be on tests.
Overall, the class honestly wasn't that bad. You don't need to get the textbook because he gives you all the notes you'll need in class. He offers extra credit opportunities throughout the semester which help a lot on exams. If you take good notes in class, the exams aren't terrible.
Dr. Coulson's class is pretty easy. Attendance not mandatory, but if you skip class you will not do well. Sit near the front so you can pay attention and take good notes. He posts lecture notes online, but they are incomplete. Print them out and fill them in in class. If you do the extra credit/pay attention in class/take good notes, you will pass.
If you don't show up to class, you won't pass. Tests questions are really specific and lectures are very general so the tests are VERY difficult and I know a lot of people that just didn't do well because tests cover too much specific information. I would still take it over Bio or Chem but know what you are getting into.
As long as you go to class and pay very close attention you should be fine. His tests are hard to do well on, just because they can have a lot of trick questions. But pay attention and you won't have any issues.
Gives extra credit which helped. Pulled a few all nighters before test to get As. Lots lots of notes. U better take good notes and you can make A. He's detailed and questions can be tricky. No hmwk means plenty of time to study notes. Don't buy book. Large classes make it hard but he wants u to do well and he's a good guy. I liked him.
Measured continental drift in Boba-Fett-action-figure-lengths. Cool guy. Firm but fair.
Coulson is a good guy with good intentions but he tests are hard! You can study all you want but he tries to trick you on his exams. Good luck pulling all-nighters to try and get an A in the class!
Lectures are the only thing that matters. This class should be an easy A, but he makes the exams way harder than they should be. He offers extra credit so you can turn your F into a D.
The exams are HORRIBLE. He tries to trick you by switching up words or asking questions differently than they are in the notes. He doesnt tell you anything that will be on the exam so you have to just memorize 30 pages of notes for each exam, then the actual exam itself is tricky. Awful class, he gives extra credit points but it is not worth it
This was the worst class I've ever taken. Coulson is a good teacher but he just lectures the whole time and then makes the tests super tricky. Would not recommend this class if you are looking for an A in a gen ed science class!!!
Dr. Coulson is clearly very knowledge-able on the subject, and he tries to relate Geology to every day life. However, I don't care what he says, his tests are intentionally meant to trick you. He asks about teeny details, so unless you memorize every word he says, you will not get A's on tests. Not to mention, Geology is just mind-numbingly boring.
Coulson is a great professor! I took this class knowing I had no interest in science and it ended up being fine. The lab is fairly easy too. Beware his tests have a lot of trick questions and you have to start studying early!! Often times I had over 200 flashcards for each test. I would take it before Bio or Chem any day.
The biggest thing I can say about this class is if you don't study you won't pass. It's not easy. Alan makes it VERY clear what you need to know (which is pretty much everything). Don't skip class, take great notes, make huge sets of flashcards, and an A is attainable. Not an easy science but a better bet than bio or chem.
dope guy
Geology 1010 is a tricky class. To some it comes really easily and others it is a lot of time and effort to pass. Though attendance is not mandatory, I would not suggest that if you want to pass the class. There are 5 tests and he drops the lowest so you do have an ability to not take the final. GET THE BOOK! It helps a lot but not required.
Coulson is a good teacher and engages his students. however, what i think me and many other people noticed is that he makes his tests SUPERRR hard and intentionally puts questions in there to trick you. Kinda sucks when you think you know the material and he asks a very minuscule detail on the test even when you studied. Besides this, hes good.
Coulson is tough but fair. An A is GEOL 1010 is tough but attainable if you're willing to put the work in. Your grade is based on 4 exams and a final (which you can get exempt from with an A). Tests are also based on what he says in lecture, so show up and take good notes. The textbook isn't necessary. Overall, I had a good experience in this class
Dr. Coulson clearly states what is expected and communicates important information very efficiently. Grading is fair and very concise and specific to his expectations. Dr. Coulson really cares about his students and is available through email or in person pretty much anytime students need assistance. You do have to study hard, but that's about it.
Hes a great professor
Dr. Coulson is a good professor. His lectures are good but very boring. He offers up to 6 points of extra credit on every single test. Keep in mind there are 4 tests and this is the only thing you are graded on. His tests are extremely hard and you will need to study hard to get an A. He is a very nice guy but go with Fiddler if you can.
Dr. Coulson really knows his material. His lectures are important to attend and will help in passing his classes. His exams are straight forward with not tricks and there is no need for a textbook. Very knowledgeable and he gives easy bonus assignments.
His intro to geology class is ridiculously hard. Avoid taking this class at all costs. His tests are very difficult. Make sure you know all the numbers and statistics. He tests on the most minute details, so knowing the information back and forth is necessary. Just don't take this class. It not as easy as it sounds.
Dr. Coulson's class is fair but you have to work for it. No hmrw, but your grade is composed of 5 tests (lowest gets dropped). He is very specific on the tests, so study hard, show up to class, take good notes and you will get a B or A in the class. Also he's pretty funny and his class is interesting, or at least much better than bio or chem
Coulson is arguably the best professor Ive had at Clemson. Awesome lectures with relevant information and constantly willing to help students who need it. Class is extremely fair and if you do the work youll get a good grade. Definitely take his class.
Great dude, poor teacher. You have to work HARD to get an A. Exams have tons of material, and some people love it (I was not one of them). Hes super nice which makes it hard to blatantly hate the class, but I DID NOT love it at all. Study, take diligent notes, sit near the front.
I loved Dr. Coulson. I would recommend Geology as your science requirement. The tests were just 50 multiple choice questions about like 4 lectures each. So it is important to go to the lectures most of the time. I think it's mostly memorization. Also, geology lab is a great lab. It is usually quick and the final is just a powerpoint presentation.
I loved Dr Coulsons lectures! He was fun and engaging. He tells you everything you need to know to be successful!
If you care at all about your GPA do not take his class. He is crazy hard. the other geology professor is willing to work more with you and makes the tests knowing we don't all want to be geology majors.
I'm going to be real with you here. Coulson tells you specifically at the very beginning of the semester that this is NOT an easy A. Coulson is an excellent professor. Most people bashing him were lazy and did not want to work for their grade. He is very clear about what he expects from his students and is willing to help anyone who asks!
Dr. Coulson is a very entertaining teacher and you can tell he cares a lot about his students and the material. No homework, but the tests are made up of about 5 lectures. He will also sometimes blatantly tell you if something is on the test, and he repeats hard material a few times in different ways so everyone understands. Great guy.
So, I took his class during Fall 2020 and it ended up being asynchronous online. Overall, his recorded lectures were very good, and his only coursework would consist of 6 exams. The exams were open-note, so if you took good notes you would be fine. He also gave a lot of extra credit opportunities so if you pay attention, his class is easy to pass.
I had this class online so it was kind of weird. His class was easy but he was post 2 hour long lectures that you had to watch to pass the class. The tests were easy but that is the only grade in the class. The only annoying part was how long it took me to watch and take notes on the lectures.
Professor Coulson is a super nice and funny. His lectures are kind of boring, but he makes everything easy to understand. His tests are fair. If you go to class and pay attention, youll get a good grade.
Long boring lectures, but he tries to keep them as entertaining as possible which is appreciated. If you can stay focused on the lectures and take good notes it is an easy A.
Dr. Coulson clearly cares about his students as he tries to make geology relevant to us, even as non-stem majors, by including interesting facts and current events. Your grade is just 5 open-note (very straightforward) exams, with extra credit opportunities for each one. Definitely take Geology 1010 with Dr. Coulson for your gen-ed science!
Dr. Coulson is a great professor, he's super nice and keeps his lectures entertaining/interesting. 6 exams however you can drop your lowest exam grade. As long as you watch the lecture videos/go to class, you'll be fine (he tells you what's on the exam most of the time). His lectures can run a little long though, make sure to take notes.
I took GEOL 1010 with Coulson asynchronously so all I needed to do was watch the lecture recordings and take notes. Exams were open note and not too difficult. With the bonus assignments added to exams it was easy to get an A on every exam. No assignments other than exams. Highly recommend.
Professor is very knowledgeable and is truly passionate about geology. He has high expectations for the class and treats everyone in the class as a geology major. In other words he knows most people in the class aren't geology majors but doesn't ramp down the difficulty. Tests can be tough so take good notes and go to every class. Solid professor.
prepare to feel rushed during his test on summer session... 50 question test with 45min time limit.
He's just an amazing professor. No HWs or quizzes, so most of the material is concentrated into the exams and final. TAKE GOOD NOTES, AND NEVER SKIP CLASS! Skipping class/slacking on notes will DESTROY you in this class. He's a very strict professor, but also very funny. He puts memes, jokes, and Star Wars references into his lectures. Take him!
Really good professor with lectures, but there are 5 tests and each question always has 6 answer choices. Takes basic geology way to seriously.
Professor Coulson will probably be one of my if not my favorite professor. His teaching style is perfect for me. There is no textbook for the lecture class, but attendance is mandatory if you want to pass. His tests rely on notes you take on his LECTURE which encourages listening. He makes sure you know the information so that his tests seem easy.
Very lecture heavy. If you dont show up or have someone to send you in depth notes, you probably wont pass. The exams are average if you study all the material, but there a lot of exams (5 midterms and a final). If you can function well in that environment hes a good professor.
Prof Coulson is a good professor but his class is unnecessarily hard. I just needed a natural science with a lab and the concepts are not hard but he only uses tests for the grade and he knows that he makes them hard. He will give you hints in class but he is basically telling you what he will trip you up on.
He's a good professor and likes and knows what he is teaching and teaches it very well but he does make his tests a little tricky but if you go to class and take notes and put time into studying for his tests, you will be just fine. Attendance is optional but you don't want to miss any. Would retake with him.
A great professor for those who are willing to put in the work for his class. You need to attend every lecture, but they aren't unbearable, and it's actually pretty interesting when he explains how geology fits into current events (he also adds fun pop culture references). The tests are easy enough as long as you take detailed notes and study.
If you work well with learning by lectures you should get an A. He tries to make lectures as interesting as they can be, but you need to show up each class to do well on exams as his posted lectures slides are very vague. Exams are pretty easy and studying for a couple hours before will get you at least a B. Definitely the easiest gen ed science.
Dr. Coulson is the most personable professor I have ever had. If you have an A average after the 5 exams, you get to skip the final. You can also earn up to 6 bonus pts on each of the tests, which gives good incentive to study and actually learn. I accidently slept through the final and he allowed me to take it with the next class. 100% recommend.
Dr. Coulson makes it very clear what you are expected to do. The class was graded based on 5 exams, no homework, papers, quizzes, etc. All the exams were multiple choice and pretty straightforward as long as you go to class. I studied for one hour the morning before each exam and got a 96 in the class.
Dr. Coulson is a great professor. He is good at communicating what is expected of his students. All grades are exams. If you attend class, take good notes, and study you can get an A in his class. No extra credit opportunities are offered. Attendance is not mandatory but youll miss a lot of information if you dont attend.
Dr. Coulson is an incredible professor to take for GEOL-1010! His lectures are enjoyable, and you can tell he is really passionate about the subject. He is also extremely fair and tells you exactly what to expect. Go to class, take VERY detailed notes, and start prepping for tests early: you will be just fine!
attendance isn't mandatory, but you'll want to go to class for the lectures. he only has exams, no homework. five exams and the final which you don't have to take if you have an A before the final. really great prof
grade is determined by 5 exams & a final. you can exempt if you have an a & the lowest exam is dropped. he offers up to 6 extra points on all exams. this class is based on lectures completely and is a lot of memorization. if you cant memorize things well or put in the time, don't take this class. cool guy that tries to make his lectures interesting
Good professor teaches the class great, exams are easy if you study and take notes, but the lecture feels like it moves along veryy slow.
Very long lectures with 5 tests in the class from material and the final. Test questions are meant to trick you. The class is pure memorization of every fact on 15-20 pages of notes for each test. Class could be so much easier than he makes it. Studying for this class takes a lot of time becuase there is so much to know.
He is easy as long as you go to lecture and pay attention. Anyone who does poorly in this class just did not care about the class at all. The exams were not hard and you will learn as you go. He also gives 6 easy bonus points for each exam that will boost you almost and entire letter grade.
Don't let the easy reputation fool you. This class requires a ton of memorization and studying time. The tests are tricky and you must know every tiny detail of a ton of notes.
Great professor. Don't slack on the labs and exams and attend lectures, give a good end-of-year presentation, should be an easy A or B. Textbook is definitely not needed, but take good, diligent notes. Don't fall into the trap of "study groups": no studying happens at all, even though you leave feeling like you learned something.
He tells you exactly what you need to know. It's graded on 5 tests, the lowest is dropped, you exempt if your 5 tests are an A average without the lowest dropped. You get 6 easy bonus points on each exam that are open note. It's so easy you just have to go to lecture and take good notes. He also literally says test questions too.
I had Dr. Coulson for GEOL-1010 and adored the class so I decided to take GEOL-2020 with him as well. This is a difficult class (lots of tests, memorization, relatively hard labs); however, it is fair. The lectures are wonderful, and Dr. Coulson is always accessible. Study alone (whiteboards are helpful), make VERY detailed notes and pay attention!
This guy is awesome - what a wholesome dude. You can tell he cares about what he's teaching and really tries to make a boring subject interesting. People need to laugh at his jokes more because he's actually so funny. He gives lots of chances for extra credit on tests, no homework, and attendance is optional; take Professor Coulson!!!
You have to pay attention to every word he says, the powerpoints alone will not help you on the test
Dr. Coulson's class is 100% effort based. Negative reviews on here are most likely due to a lack of studying the material in depth. As long as you show up to class and spend time outside of the class reviewing, you should not have a problem. However, if you are not a good test taker, I wouldn't recommend this class specifically.
Literally minoring in geology now because I liked his class that much. You NEED to show up to class and take GOOD notes if you want to do well.
Your entire grade is 4 exams. He doesn't take attendance but if you don't go you will miss a ton of information. You have to take extremely good notes to be able to do well on the exams. The exams can be tricky, the usual average for each exam in my section was a C or low B every time. He is extremely knowledgeable and passionate about geology
Dr. Coulson is clearly very passionate about what he teaches, but his lectures are extremely fast-paced, if you miss a single detail it will cost you later on the exams. He offers 6 bonus points per each exam, otherwise, there is nothing else but exam grades. I recommend immediately reviewing lectures after class and making your own practice tests.
Besides a few small extra credit opportunities, the only grades are exams. You can exempt from the final if you have an A. The lectures are information heavy but if you take good notes you should be fine.
Really tries to trick you with test questions. Geology is usually an easy A at most colleges, it is not here especially considering the only grades are tests. Most of the people in the 150 person class are not geology majors, so coulson needs to chill with the tests
I LOVE Professor Coulson! I am a business major, but took this class for my science credit. You need to put in work for the tests, but if you do so then the test are easy and straightforward. If you get an A average, you get to exempt the final. He is super funny and the lectures are extremely easy to follow. Just make sure you take good notes!
Every class is a lecture and 100% of your grade is exam based. Professor Coulson will try and trick you on exam questions but everything on the test is covered in lectures. Coulson is a great guy and keeps lectures interesting. Concepts aren't very difficult to grasp but the amount of information you need to memorize for a test is A LOT. Study hard
This was the only class I struggled with this semester. Only graded based on 4 exams and only exempt from the final if you have an A average with all exams. Test questions are a bit wonky and can catch you off guard/trick you. Definitely better than Bio or Chem (especially if you aren't a STEM major) and does EC and a lowest test grade drop.
Prof. Coulson is a pretty nice guy with a sense of humor but he takes his teachings very seriously. This class is solely based off memorization as many tests require you to memorize 20 pages worth of notes. And you better do good on these tests because that's where 100% of your grade is coming from. Take good notes and attend class.
Alan is a bit of a quirky guy. His class is basically just lectures and 4 exams but it's a manageable amount of information. Really nice that there is no homework and only real work is memorization for the exams. He kept the material interesting when he could and made lots of little jokes in his lectures (sometimes, even some that were funny).
Professor Coulson is a great Professor. He gets straight to the point and his lectures are very effective. This course is literally just memorization, so study a week before each exam and you will be fine. You can exempt the final as well. The only grades in this course are 4 exams, yes 4, then the final exam for a total of 5 exams. Easy course.
This rating is for the GEOL 1030 Lab. Our TA, Mr. McDaniel is not very social, but he is a good teacher and is very prepared for his lectures before the lab. The quizzes are easy and the midterm is just memorization. With that said STUDY just for 30 minutes is good enough, study a little and you will be fine. The hardest quiz is the 1st one.
Very difficult class and professor. I think he is a nice guy but he grades by very few things and expects us to memorize an abundant amount of terms and pictures. He brags that the average in the class is a C, and you better take notes on EVERY SINGLE THING he says if you even want to have a slim chance of getting an A in this course.
He's a nice guy but his class is so difficult compared to the other profs. I was talking with people in my lab and they got cheat sheets on exams, but we had to take notes on every little thing he said in class because he doesn't put info on the powerpoints because he wants people to go to his class. He also only bases his grades on the exams.
Alan was amazing!!!! I don't know why people have rated him so low cause he's pretty considerate and will re-explain something if you're confused. Don't worry about any homework outside of class. Just study all the material from the lecture a couple of days before the exam and you will do fine.
Professor Coulson is a great guy. His classes are all lectures so while attendance is not mandatory, if you miss a class, you'll be missing a LOT of information. There's only 4 exam grades and you can exempt the final. If you take notes and listen in class, you'll be fine on the tests.
Grade is between 3/4 unit exams and one final, bonus assignments given for each test, did not go to class for most of the semester but if you can find notes to study with it is not horrible but going to class makes it a lot easier as his slides do not contain much info
Geology 1010 with Coulson was great! Graded by only 4 exams with opportunities for extra credit points on each one. Can drop lowest exam and exempt final if you have an A. No homework and lecture heavy class that relies on your ability to memorize what's said in the lectures.
You'll have to put in the work, but he wants to see all of his students succeed! He gives bonus points, extra credit, and exemption from final if you do well. Just don't cheat and it will be smooth sailing if you show up to class and study!!
GEOL1010 was a breeze especially as a stem major; your grade is entirely based on 4 exams with a possibility of exempting the final if you have an A average on all 4 exams. There are "bonus assignments" that give you extra credit points on your exams so definitely do all of these! There are quizlets on the lectures that can get you an A.
Coulson only has 4 exams with a final exam. You must be able to memorize everything in order to pass and you must go to class because the slides he posts in canvas hold no information.
Very chill and fun guy, does extra credit for each exam, which really boosts your grade. No homework, but you have to go to the lectures, otherwise you'll fail the exams. Overall, really enjoyed him.
The tests are more about memorizing what he says in class than understanding the concept. Will learn information in depth in other major specific classes that conflict with his lecture notes. His powerpoints are terrible study tools, they are extremely brief
Exams are straightforward; study every now and then, and you should be able to get at least a B. Really easy class if you are good with studying about an hour a week and memorization.
I loved Coulson! I found it easy to do well in his class and he throws some jokes into his lectures. Take really good notes and try your best to get everything he says. I also highly recommend doing the exam reviews so you can see what types of questions he asks. Be careful of question wording and really study for exam 2. Also do the bonus!
some test questions come straight from the practice quizzes so do those and do the bonus assignments they're generally easy and get added to your test grades. tests are the only grades in the class.
Tests are impossible. I studied for 11 hours and got a 62.
Coulson's class has straightforward exams, but requires consistent memorization. Attend lectures, take diligent notes, and use Unstuckstudy for efficient study prep. Bonus assignments can boost your grade - just don't cheat and you'll do well!
Coulson is a good professor as long as you take good notes. His class is just exams averaged together, If you study for the exams and do the practice exams you should do fine in this class. I highly recommend doing all the extra credit he gives. This provides you an added extra six points on your exams.
The entire class is just lectures and 4 tests plus a final, and the tests were very easy if you just study your notes on the lectures. You are not tested on anything that is not in the lectures, and he explains the concepts well. You exempt the final with an A which is extremely easy to do, and there's even extra credit. Great professor.
I took Dr. Coulson's class as a non-science major and am glad I did. Coulson is an experienced lecturer and it shows after taking other Profs who lecture poorly. His grading criteria is simple and fair. If your good with memorization you'll get an A. Just make sure to actually attend the lectures and take good notes.
Coulson definitely teaches a lot of information during lectures, but he is an amazing professor who is easy to understand. He will always help outside of class, update Canvas daily, and send reminders all the time. I just took geology for a random gen-ed requirement, and he made it really interesting to learn about.
Alan is likeable, cares about the material and those learning it, and offers good resources for studying and extra credit. Attend lectures as often as you can and watch recordings, being sure to take notes when he mentions something not directly on a slide. I recommend taking notes on a downloaded copy of the lecture slides and then studying them.
The entire class is just 5 exams and you can exempt the final if you have an A average of the first 4 exams. The exams are easy if you attend lectures, take good notes, and put in the effort in studying for the exams. Highly recommend you do the bonus assignments and the practice exams. Don't listen to the bad reviews, they just have a skill issue.
This class is completely exam based with 4 midterms and a final and you can exempt the final if you have an A average on the midterms. The lectures are very content heavy, but if you go to class and take notes, and actually study your notes you'll do fine on the midterms. It's a lot of memorization but that's to be expected with an intro class.
Pay attention to his lectures and write down more of what he says rather than what's on the slides.Your entire grade will be 4 tests and if you have an A average you can exempt the final. He is strict on being on your phone and cheating, but if you go to class and study exempting the final ins't impossible.
Professor Coulson is an excellent teacher. While exams are difficult, success is guaranteed if you put in the time and energy. He wants you to succeed and gives students the resources to do so.
Professor Coulson is very passionate about Geology but it really shows in his tests. He cares way more about you UNDERSTANDING content and not just memorizing it. He gives exemptions on final if you have an A average between all exams but he will not round up grades easily. You need to go to every class or you genuinely have 0 chance of passing.
1. only grades are 4 tests and final, if u have A-average on first 4 tests, u exempt final 2. u can get 6 extra credit pts per test, they're easy to get 3. no grade for attendance, but u need to show up every class and take good notes for an A 4. tests are all memorization; test avgs were around 75-81 for every test, highs were always 104-106
Your grade is defined by your exams. There are four midterm exams and one final but if you have an A you can exempt out of the final. Attendance is not mandatory, but if you want to do well go to the lectures. Overall, the concepts in class are not hard you just have to put in effort to study. Would definitely recommend if you need a lab science.
He was a good teacher, but the grading system was horrible and its all tests. Attendance is not mandatory, but if you don't go you will fall behind because the lectures on canvas that he posts have no information. You can't cheat and you have to know every single detail about the unit. TESTS ARE SO HARD!!!!!!
Great professor. Make sure you go to the lectures and take good notes. Do the bonus assignments and take the practice tests, because he often reuses questions from them.
I've studied the exams in this class for days at a time and felt confident for exams only to be met with a failing grade each time. I think this professor intentionally makes exams harder than necessary, and every other person i've met in another geol 1010 class says they feel bad for his students.
You REALLY have to pay attention in lecture & take good notes to do well on the exams, which are your only grades, but he makes geology interesting! He's a funny guy & I actually enjoyed the lectures. He provides plenty of easy extra credit for exams. Class isn't a lot of work except studying. Highly recommend for a m/s credit for non-m/s people!
Great professor, make sure to attend the lectures and do the bonus question and practices exams.
He was a pretty good professor! Lectures were good but long, and you need to go to class to get notes that he doesnt always put on his slides. Exams can be a little tough but not bed if you study well enough.
Non mandatory attendance but you have to go to do well as there are things he talks about only in class on exams. Exams are all your grade but bonus opportunities (at least 6 points per exam) are available before exams. Lectures can be boring but he is a genuine guy.
Dr. Coulson is a very good lecturer. Attendance is optional, but you need to go because everything he mentions can be on the tests. The lectures are sometimes heavy and can get boring, but he does a good job of keeping you engaged. His tests can be difficult, but he offers a lot of bonus points. Overall, I would take if you need the credit.
The lectures can get a little boring, but he does try to make them interesting by telling jokes and facts. He offers up to 6 points of extra credit for each exam. You can exempt your final if you have an A average between the exams after the added extra credit points. Overall, it was a difficult class but if you put the effort in, you'll do good!
One of the best professors I had ever. Bonus points are obtainable on every exam and the final. Chill and funny guy. Attendance is not mandatory, but I would recommend showing up to actually understand the powerpoints. Living legend
Coulson is an amazing lecturer. Some topics can get a bit boring, but he genuinely wants you to understand and succeed, and as long as you go to lecture, pay attention, and study for the exams, you'll do great. Class is graded on 4 exams, you can get up to 6 bonus points on each exam. Exams are 50 MCQ, you can exempt the final with an A average.
While attendance isn't graded, you absolutely need to show up to class. Every class includes a lecture from start to finish; you will not get out of this class early, but it won't run late. Other than that, the class is very interesting, the tests reflect the lectures, and you don't really need the textbook.
His lectures never end early or late, always right on time. Most times the class feels like it drags but he does make little break/catch-up windows in between. The class is graded on 4 exams + final, he always gives an opportunity for extra credit, do them. Always try and have someone in the class to compare notes with, slides have minimal content.
Easiest science class I've had. The only grades are exams, but if you go to class and take good notes, youll be fine. Lectures are heavy and kind of a snooze, but it is all memorization and the concepts in the class are so easy. Definitely recommend. The bad reviews are probably from people who didn't show up to class.
His class just takes genuine studying. He gives great lectures and good things to help prepare but it's up to you to get a good grade. I would suggest looking for a different professor because I know there's one that gives you a cheat sheet.
Though my grade does not indicate it, as I do not care about geology in the slightest, Dr. Coulson is a very good professor and makes the requirements for the class incredibly clear, and if you study as much as he says to you will almost certainly have at least a passing grade.
Coulson cares about geology and wants his students to do well. If you don't come to class, you will not pass the class! You have to take good, detailed notes and listen to everything he says. He often emphasizes what will be on the exam, but you must study. He is approachable and cares. I've found the class to be fairly interesting tbh.
Very lighthearted
professor Coulson was a great lecturer and provided ample study materials for all of our exams. He was good about setting the expectations of the students and was helpful. Would take this course with him again.
preface - not a science girl - this class is only graded on exams based on lectures which were clear + content heavy. attendance not required he posts slides but its better to go to class. there are opportunities to boost your grade w/ bonus assignments - its a lot of memorization/ content - he is really nice - not a huge workload just studying
Nice guy & does his best to make the class entertaining, but boring content. Need to invest a lot of time & effort to do well in this class. Only grades are 4 tests + a final (exempt w/ A average). Opportunities to get bonus points on tests. Attendance isn't mandatory & he posts slides but a lot of information isn't on the slides so go to class.
Dr. Coulson is a fantastic lecturer and makes a topic as boring as geology, at least somewhat interesting. He communicates about topics in a very clear, understandable way and adds his funny sense of humor which keeps you engaged. You are graded entirely on exams but they are fully multiple choice and he gives you plenty of extra credit.
Not a great communicator, also does like to round grades or give any extra points. I had a 89.7 at the end of the semester and I was given a B in the course. We should not have professors like this at this university.
Coulson is honestly great and this coming from someone who doesn't care for geology, but after his class I lowkey find it interesting. He knows what he's talking about and he also knows how to dumb it down for people who don't (me). The whole class is a lecture and he never finishes early and 4 exams are ur grade and he has many xtra cred chances.
This class is graded on 4 tests and a final which you can exempt by having an A. However Alan unnecessarily makes tricky test questions and answer choices that don't match up. The exams frustrated me when I missed points, not because I lacked understanding, but because the wording seemed intentionally misleading. Take a different professors course!
I really enjoyed his lecture. It's definitely not for everyone. You will require decent attention to detail to differentiate between his answers because he puts good trick answers to his exam questions. Grade is entirely dependent on exams. Attendance isn't checked, but you will need to show up to do well. He almost converted me to a geology major.
