I enjoyed going to this class. His lectures are interesting but can get confusing at times. Quizzes arent bad and his test reviews are helpful. I recommend this professor.
Cring is one of the most entertaining and fun teachers I have had. I enjoyed his class and did learn a lot. He's kind of a weird guy but that's what kept the class fun. I recommend taking him and would take him again in the future.
Great professor who really knows the topic and world of finance/economics. His lectures are from his mouth to the class. no powerpoints. Hes does not play "read a long " on the projection screen. Thats how confident and knowledgeable he is. Tests can be hard, but go to class, & he records his lectures for future use on itunes. Very worthwhile class
One of the best teacher's i've had at ISU! not the easiest but keeps class entertaining. go to class and if you do the take home quizes or the online ones then you do great on the tests. Puts up one of the test problems online the day before.
Dr. Cring is extremely intelligent and pretty awesome. He says funny stuff during class and even records his lectures and posts them on itunes. His exams are pretty hard however, and sometimes his lectures get pretty confusing. Good luck getting him to respond to an e-mail. Overall a pretty good teacher but his style of teaching wasn't best for me.
Professor Cring is an interesting character to say the least. no textbook. no powerpoints. lectures are from him with no aids. He knows his stuff. Tests are hard, but no impossible. Do the quizzes and show up, relisten to his lectures because he talks kind of fast (he posts them online) Not the easiest class, but interesting none the less
Professor Cring is the man. He keeps class interesting and it's not one of those classes where you just memorize power points or definitions. Go to class and work with groups and you should do just fine.
Do not take this class. He is a terrible teacher and his tests have nothing to do with what he teaches. He is very unorganized when it comes to his lectures. He is hard to hear and just mumbles to himself a lot. I would recommend finding a different teacher for this class.
Very helpful, knowledgeable and accommodating. Taught from both outside the text and from it. I'd recommend taking him.
Prof C is so funny, loves to interact with students. However, what he lectures on in class has little/nothing to do with what's on the exams. Exams: MC, essay, work out problems (most difficult). Youll REALLY need to know your stuff to get them right. Grades are almost all exam points, so take him if your're willing to do a lot of self learning.
Makes class interesting and fun. Goes over a lot of material very quickly and tests are difficult but not impossible.
Professor Cring is a really fun teacher and makes class fun, but his class is really hard. His test was one of the hardest tests I have ever taken in my life. There are not a lot of extra points to get your grade up except for the online quizzes which can also be kind of tough.
He is a funny and crazy proffesor. He makes fun of students and talks about inappropriate things that have nothing to do with class. He does PodCast his lectures so you can relisten to him or if you miss a class, this is helpful. You NEED to study and understand the material. Best advice: make friends and study together
Class is impossible if you don't cheat. During exams he sits there while everyone in the back has notebooks, papers and whatever else they want out. Make friends and find copies of old tests. You won't learn a thing though so if you actually like finance take someone else
Prof. C is my favorite teacher from freshman year. He teaches a lot and the class is more about learning than the grade. Getting an A is easy because you can take all the tests twice and it's the same test both time, plus it's all online tests. He is also very helpful out of class if you are a business major.
Professor Cring is hilarious and brings humor into the relatively boring subject of Finance. He isn't the best teacher in regards to class structure. Cring jumps from topic to topic making it hard to understand material and doesn't clearly mark reading material needed for tests. But if you go to the review sessions, passing this class is possible.
This guy is one of the best professors I have ever had. His lectures are hilarious and he makes it pretty easy to understand and he is more than willing to answer any questions you have after class and during his office hours, BUT YOU HAVE TO ASK. He seems really eccentric but he cares about his students and is more than willing to help you.
Great teacher, gives hardly any assignments but has all the quizzes online. Mess up on assignment, he'll give you extra time if you ask. If you participate in his class and do all the assignments correctly, you'll get a good grade. Has a funny sense of humor.
Cring was awesome. Really laid back. He likes to talk alot, mostly interesting stuff. His tests are all online and you can take each one twice. Class was really easy. easy A.
Look, Cring is interesting and funny, but the lectures he gives do not match the homework questions. If you want to do well on the quizzes, all you have to do is read the chapters in the book. The lectures are essentially for entertainment because I did not learn all that much there. Oh and be ready for lots of ranting and uncomfortable questions.
Professor Cring is probably the craziest professor I have ever had. I really did not take much from his class, except for the outrageously easy A. Going to class is not necessary, however, just be ready to stay up with his online quizzes.
Professor C is kinda crazy but he's a good teacher. No in class quizzes or tests. They're all online, including the final. He has a lot of real-world business experience and he's a really interesting guy. Take BUS 100 with him if you can!
Tons of online homework and quizzes/tests, so be prepared to dedicate a lot of time to that. He gave 3 in class exams this semester, which were all short answer and based on his lectures. If you didn't answer in his exact words then you lost points. Tough class, I didn't really learn anything. Overall, he was a nice guy but definitely eccentric.
Lots of online homework/tests, but he gives you multiple tries on each assignment. 3 in class exams, first one was super tough and the second one was super easy, final wasn't so tough. The guy is absolutely hilarious, which helps you focus because his lectures are long and boring. But I defiantly felt that this was the easier route for this course.
Cring is crazy. Pretty funny guy though. Lots of online homework, but you get 3 attempts on them, so it's pretty easy to get a high grade in the online portion. As for the tests, 6 short answer questions, you must answer 5 (1-2 sentences). He gives you about 15 questions that could be on the test the day before, and you get a notecard.
If you don't write exactly want Prof. C want on his tests, than you get it wrong. He does have review sessions before every test so if you go to those and listen to the podcasts, you can get a decent grade. Online homework is not really related to the things you are doing in class, so they take a long time to complete.
Long and crazy lectures but review sessions before the tests will give you almost exactly what you need to know for the exam. Online homework is very technical and takes a long time but he drops the lowest three. Cring is crazy but he's very smart and knows what he's talking about
Cring is a funny guy and great professor. He really knows his stuff, NEVER is reading off a Powerpoint. There is LOTS of online work for this course, quizzes and tests can be tough and take some time to complete up to 2-3 hrs per test and quiz. Other than the online work. In class exams are written but you can use a notecard. Overall an easy class.
This guy is a riot. Very knowledgeable teacher, unfortunately his online portion of the class has nothing to do with the lectures. About 20% of the material in his lectures are actually on the in class test. Love his grading format, it sets you up for success. Buy the book, it will show you how to do all of the online portion of the class.
Cring, what a guy. Cring makes FIL 240 a very interesting class. I wish he was a little more structured in lecture but I have learned so much from him and I highly recommend him. He shows you the real side of Finance while teaching course material. 10/10
Overall a good choice, solid teacher who is passionate about what he teaches. online homework is hard but the endless equations dont appear on the exams. 5 questions answer 4 of them, tough grader on these exams but listen to the lectures and podcasts and the grade should be in your favor
If you're looking for an easy class to pass, Cring is your guy. Unless you hate busy work (65% of the grades are busy work that does not apply to lecture or the tests). He's the craziest professor you'll ever meet. He makes you think you have to work really hard to pass but he records all his lectures and drops 3 of everything. Just don't get lazy.
Lectures are interesting and professor Cring is a cool guy. The online homework/quiz/test each week is a big portion of your grade and can take a lot of time. The in class exams are fairly easy and he lets you use a notecard with no restrictions on it. The lowest three scores of each online category are dropped so getting an A is fairly easy.
Cring, is something else. He's all over the place and you never know what he's going to do next. The math part of the class is online, while his in class tests and quizzes are over his lectures. If you have to take FIL240, this is who you want to take it with.
Be prepared to dedicate A LOT of time to the assignments for this class. Although you get 3 attempts on the homework and 2 attempts on quizzes, its pretty hard stuff. He also gives out pop quizzes so be prepared for that. He is VERY funny though, I really liked him. I would take his class again for sure!
He is a hilarious and engaging professor. He knows what he is talking about and does what he can to make it as interesting as possible to his students. He gives you questions that could be on a test and he picks 5 questions from that. If you are willing to put the work in it is easy. He also does online stuff. I actually learned a lot.
All of the homework and quizzes are online through pearson. The in class exams are TOUGH, and only based on lectures, but he is very helpful in office hours. Those who didn't seek help probably struggled to get a B or C because he is a crazy strict grader, but if you go to his office its an easy A because he'll explain exactly what he expects.
Personally love Alan, he really cares about his students and how they are doing in the class. My biggest advice would be to go see him in office hours he is very helpful. Online stuff is v difficult but you can make up for it with the written exams. He podcasts all his lectures so you are able to follow along. I recommend but he is not for everyone
Probably one of the best professors I have ever had. Very funny and keeps the lectures interesting. There are online homework assignments, quizzes, and exams. Easy if you put the work in and he drops the three lowest scores in each category. Overall easy A, but learned a lot from the material in lectures.
Cring is crazy but funny. Not the best at teaching. His lectures are not structured at all because he doesn't use powerpoints. He does record his lectures and post the podcasts on his websites so you can go back and listen later. His test are impossibly hard and consist of 5 essay questions but you can use notecard. Tons of online homework.
The amount of wisdom this man beholds is groundbreaking. He takes special interest in the students who reach out to him & uses his endless connections to prepare them for their business lives. His teaching style is unique; to do well you must show you fully understand the the concepts he portrays in lecture & on exams. EZ for those w/common sense
Cring is a riot. His teaching style is like nothing I've ever seen before. I think the hardest part of this class was the online portion. His in-class tests consist of 5 short answer questions but he is super picky about wording, spelling, and grammar. Go to his office before the test & he'll give you exactly the answer he's looking for.
Cring is really something else, borderline crazy, but keeps class interesting. He knows what he's talking about in lecture. Online homework is time consuming, but the online help will get you through it. Tests are all from what he says in lecture, so showing up and taking notes is important, but he does put lecture recordings online too.
Professor Cring is a good choice for Fil 240. He records the lectures and puts them online for students to listen to. Be prepared for the homework. It's not extremely difficult, but it is time consuming. The in-class exams are tough, he grades them for correct answers, spelling, and grammar. The homework counts for a majority of your grade.
He's one crazy man but very smart as well. You will learn most of the material through the online quizzes and info he posts. In class he typically covers the general concepts and includes his personal experiences. His goal is to get you the true info about wall street and financial markets and how things really work, I enjoyed his class
I did not learn a single thing in this class. Very hard to listen to and follow, he only lectures, no powerpoints. He records his lectures and posts them online, but you won't want to go back and listen to them once you suffer through his class. Make sure you go to class because there are pop quizzes, and also he might give Extra Credit once.
very unorganized lecture. he knows what hes talking about but is also very hard to follow. your grade is basically based off the online homework which is near impossible and very time consuming. i dont recommend.
By far the worst professor I have ever had. He offers many ways to learn in his class but does an inadequate job with all of them. Very unclear, hard to follow. Some people say he has a sense of humor, but that is different for everyone. His attempts at humor were a waste of time and were very uncalled for at times. Horrible teacher.
Cring is one of the wildest professors. He really knows his stuff, and blurts out the most random things at times. If you copy down things that he mentions are important, put them on a notecard, you'll do fine on exams. He lets you use your old notecards on the final too, so save them. Everyone should experience a class with him at least once.
Cring is a great teacher, but makes you work for your grade. The online quizzes/tests are hard and take a lot of time so be ready for that. In-class tests are easy and straight from lecture, can use a note card & podcasts are annoying but will help you greatly on the exams since he wants your answers to be word for word what he says.
I'm shocked at some of the comments on here. I thought Cring was one of the best teachers I've ever had. The homework online is hard and he doesn't explain it that much, which is the only knock on him. He's funny, and if you go to class and take notes on important topics, you'll do fine in the class.
The test is made up of online homework (which takes forever), online quizzes, online tests, in-class quizzes, and in-class exams (3 including cumulative final). The online homework, quizzes, and tests are due every week and are hard but he drops the three lowest of each. In-class exams are 4 essay questions.
HE HAS A GRAD STUDENT WALK AROUND AND TAKE PICTURES OF YOU...
Attendance isn't mandatory, but it is if you want to pass. Very lecture heavy and tells you what will be on the exams. His exams are essay based with 4q & he wants word for word what he said in class. Allows a notecard on exams and if you go to his office he is super helpful. There's an online section to this class too with quizzes and homework.
Tough but fair
Easily the greatest professor I have ever had. Absolutely hilarious. The content is hard, but doing the homework and doing it well will save you. Attendance is not mandatory, but he will give occasional in-class quizzes worth 10 points.
Most of the class is online homework and online tests so the course isn't very challenging. He has random in-class quizzes so be ready for those. He also tries really hard to be funny and can be very cringey at times but at least he spices up the class a little. He definitely has some memorable quotes and stories from his lectures.
Alan Cring is a teacher with a ton of knowledge. He has pop quizzes worth 10 points and will take surprise attendance about three times a semester for an extra 10 points. Quizzes and tests are based on information given during the lecture. Easy A if you are someone who likes going to class and taking notes
Professor Cring was a great overall professor. Some of the work is online, so that makes part of your grade easier to earn. There are random in-class quizzes that he has as well, making it important to attend every class. The exams are also based on his in-class lectures, so pay attention and take notes!
Professor Cring is an amazing teacher and an even better colleague. Take his class, go to his office hours, show you care, and he'll make sure your grade reflects it. In other words, apply yourself and you'll get an A-B. He genuinely cares about his students and is willing to help those who seek it. Do not pass up a chance to take his classes.
Very excited about what he is teaching but he's so excited that he comes off as crazy. I learn more from the book than I learn from him. Knowledgeable and his class is pretty easy, but he is extremely hard to follow.
As a person, this man is a legend. He's so funny and interesting. The stories he shares show how well-rounded of a person he is. He thoroughly enjoys personal conversations with students. The tests are the hardest part of the class, but only weighted to be half the grade. Make sure to ask lots of questions about test material before.
He is very interesting and not boring during lectures for sure. All homework is through Cengage and can do at anytime throughout the semester. Tests are pretty hard, definitely study with peers in your class to get a good grade. I would say he isn't very organized, didn't say anything about quizzes that would show up in reggienet.
Lectures but rarely writes any notes on board. Says notes will help with quizzes but they do not. Super hard classes no matter how hard you studying he will switch stuff up. I recommend going with a different teacher. Says book powerpoints are wrong.
I like his personality. However, the quizzes are hard and dont corelate to what he says in class. I dont think he remembers what he tells us and makes random quizzes up from material he hasnt said. Otherwise, hes a good professor.
DO NOT TAKE THIS COURSE WITH CRING!!! If at all possible avoid this man, that being said at the time of writing this he is the best option for this course at ISU. Good luck :)
you have to do homework on Cengage that he does not ever relate to in class. The lectures are very scattered. I wish there was a better more organized prof to take for this course. however, he is a very smart and interesting man.
Does not teach the textbook, the only way youll get a hint of what might be on the tests is relistening to his class recordings. Over half the class scored below a B on the midterm. Final is cumulative. Rarely writes on board, off topic a lot. Does not give extensions or make-ups. No study guides, he just lists topics before exams. Not a fan.
Once you figure out how to study for this class, it's definitely doable. Cring is a really interesting guy, but his lectures can seem scattered at first. PAY ATTENTION to what he says in lecture and listen to the podcasts. He lets you use a notecard on the exams which is nice and he is very helpful in office hours.
Understandably gets a bad rep probably due to his Asperger and him not being able to understand social norms however very very knowledgeable in finance/investing and no matter who you are he will give you all the academic support you need and push you as long as you try. Hes very weird but rlly he just cares abt teaching and being kind
Honestly a really nice guy and really liked how he connected his class materials to every day life. He is more than willing to work with you and help. Lectures can get confusing but I liked that he posts all of them online after.
Hes an interesting guy and will keep you entertained for sure but his lectures are very disorganized and confusing. All the exam material is based off his lectures and it is hard to follow his lectures. Hes a funny guy and very smart but just cant teach the subject to new learners. Recommend taking someone else.
at first I did not like this class at all because there was not much structure during the lectures so it was often confusing, but you get used to it. professor cring is a nice guy and wants you to succeed but he wasn't very organized with lessons or projects/ assignments. he does prepare you well for the midterm and final, though
Cring sometimes forgets that this is a course primarily for non-finance majors. The material covered is vast, and exams can have very niche questions from the lectures. Cring's ideas are sometimes unorthodox - he rejects dividend irrelevance; he rejects risk/reward parity and says low P/E stocks are "less risky". Use only his answers on exams.
I don't think I learned anything this semester. Make sure you pay attention to lectures, quizzes & exams are verbatim, but his lectures are hard to follow because sometimes he'll give you the wrong answer then will try to come back and correct it. He wants to be relatable so he tells really bad jokes 90% of the time. If you want to slack, take him
Dr. Cring was great, I enjoyed going to class. Quizzes were fine as long as you relisten to the last few class recordings. The midterm and final can be tough, but he does give you a lot of good resources. He was also really easy to ask for help if you are having trouble with a section. Also gave a lot of good general career advice.
Overall Cring is a nice guy, however his lectures aren't very helpful as they are quite unorganized and hard to take notes. There are random in class quizzes. Exams are rather difficult but he does provide lots of helpful information at the reviews. Homework assignments can also take a lot of time because none of it is anything from his lectures.
Cring is a great professor, he does take some time to get used to his style of teaching. Overall, his homework was easy at times and seemed more like busy work. He does quizzes every other week and only has 2 exams, the final is cumulative! He allows 1 note card on the mid-term and 2 on the final! Cring's lectures are enjoyable and hilarious!
Cring seems to know a lot about finance, which he shows in how he can fluently talk about it, but he can be confusing especially to people in entry level finance classes. He doesn't have slides, so be prepared to listen thoroughly as he jumps around. Tests are very hard as well but he lets you have a note card.
Fairly easy class. I am a senior aand never skip classes just because I don't want to go. Alan Cring changed that. His classes are 25% useful and 75% not. I found it a better use of my time to just read the book and show up for the two classes before the exam to review.
Good teacher. Pop quizzes are easy. Didn't show up to class and still got an A
Lecture heavy; attendance not mandatory but would recommend. Lectures are often all over the place and hard to follow. He uses no PowerPoint - just talks as he goes over materials. He's funny and tries to make students understand, but it's not an easy class. Tests are hard. The pop quizzes aren't horrible.
You will take notes every day. Bring a computer. His Excel formulae prepare you for making real financial decisions to better yourself in life. Very personable beyond class. If you struggle, office hours with him or the teaching assistant really restore your confidence in passing the class. My grade would be higher if I did office hours sooner.
You are graded on homework, pop quizzes, a midterm, and a final. The midterm is 20% of your grade and final 30%. The TA was extremely helpful and honestly the reason I did well in this class. The professor has no clear lecture structure, no PowerPoints, he goes on tangents, and it's hard to decifer what's important vs what's not. I don't recommend.
He records all lectures and you have access to previous years. There are PowerPoints for supplemental help if you need. Overall a good class you'll do fine if you show up and take notes. He doesn't want anyone to fail and tries to be lighthearted in class. One of my favorite professors I've had.
He is such a great professor, easily one of favorite professors at ISU. He gives good lectures that as long as u take notes, you will truly understand and they help. Would definitely take again!!
He's an okay professor. It's hard to follow during lectures because we begin with stocks, then he tells a bit about the topic we are learning and tells stories. I'm not sure what to write sometimes. I'm relying on cengage to help me understand. There's lectures online but he does not use them. Pop quizzes, midterm exam, and cumulative final exam.
Awful professor and awful class format. This guy has no idea how to teach, he just rambles the entire lecture in a monotone voice, and doesn't post any slides online to review.
Horrible teacher. Learning is IMPOSSIBLE, as lecture material is different from content on tests and quizzes. Cheating is rampant in this class, little to no structure. He does have powerpoint slides and he never talks about the homework in class. Show up to the class before the exam, he gives a brief overview of content. Stay away from Cring.
Cool guy, that's about it. Very obviously doesn't know how to teach finance, especially a beginner finance course. Terrible lecture and class layout, overly challenging for no reason.
VERY VERY disorganized, confusing, awfully formatted class. In the nicest way possible, this is the worst professor I have ever had, which is funny because it's obvious he's a very smart guy. It's just unfortunate he has zero teaching skills, I'd rather stare at a wall for 24 hours than sit through this guys lectures. Please just pick someone else
I don't usually write reviews on ratemyprofessor, especially negative ones, but WOW. I am convinced Professor Cring makes his class 10x harder just for the fun of it. Very boring, confusing lectures. No material outside of class, no practice, no homework review, no structure, no study guides. just no
Cring can be an entertaining lecturer but his lectures are a little disorderly. The exam information is pretty much handed to you and the light homework is easy. There are a few in-class pop quizzes but he prepares you for them. Other reviews are dramatic, the bare minimum gets you by in this class.
Very outdated professor, doesn't post any resources. Awful lectures, not very approachable. Everyone I've talked to despises the class. Go with someone else.
Everyone rating a one is being a bit dramatic. He is a genuinely funny guy who has real world experience with what he's teaching. Is he the best professor? No. Is his class a death march? Also no. Show up, take notes, do well on the exams, you'll be fine.
I learned nothing. His lectures are so confusing but the class overall is such a breeze. You only have one weekly assignment and you'll know days before about the "pop quizzes". If you want a super easy class, take it. You just won't learn jack about finance.
Professor Cring was pretty good! Class consisted of lectures every class period, attendance points are recorded every time, one HW assignment per week (can be lengthy and difficult), pop quizzes here and there & a midterm and final. Would recommend taking Cring for FIL240!
Everybody is being dramatic with these reviews. Just make sure to come prepared to class. Read the material before the lecture. The homework is a bit lengthy, and there is a mid-term and a cumulative final. I do wish his lecture style was different, however it's not as bad as people are making it to seem. Just pay attention and ask for help.
Fun and knowledgeable professor. Has unique lectures, but they are worth attending. Quizzes and exams are based on what he says in class, so it is ideal to write good notes. Not a hard class as long as you follow along with what he says since he pretty much gives away free points, especially a 100point assignment where u have to be Excel certified.
I took Professor Cring's honors section and had a great experience. At first, he was a difficult to follow, very sporadic, but you learn as you go. Lots of real-world examples and memorable stories. Pointed out great opportunities happening over the semester. Provided multiple extra credit options. SUPER helpful on Midterm and Final, open note.
To succeed in the course you need to show up to class and take notes. Any time I needed additional help I went to office hours and he was more than happy to explain the concepts I was struggling with and give me practice problems. If you put in the time and effort you will get an A.
This has been my favorite class i have taken. No test its all case studies that are actually interesting and kinda fun to do. You work in groups the entire time and its overall a great class to get some idea of finance and have a class where you dont have to study or do any work outside the class
Cring is nice and helpful, but his teaching skills are awful. His lectures lack structure, which causes them to be disorganized. The homework doesn't connect with the lectures. The exams and quizzes are hard because they draw heavily from the lecture. It was a degree requirement for me, and I'm glad it's over! If I were you, stay away from Cring!
All quizzes and exams are online (in person), online textbook is required to do the homework (1 assignment every week), lecture is boring and he talks quite but adds some humor and jokes to his lectures. Attendance is taken for 1 point each class day majority of the time, you can definitely pass without knowing much of the content.
His class is definitely lecture heavy. Attendance is worth points but if you didn't want to attend the online assignments and slide shows address what he said. It's really hard to fail the class, if you're respectful he'll open late assignments for you. The midterm and final are open note. Be aware there are two group projects.
Decent professor, test and quiz heavy, hard to know what information you need to know.
This class is already challenging, and Cring's teaching style didn't help. His lectures follow the same fast-paced format with little engagement, and the quizzes are difficult because you're given multiple spreadsheets to download and sort through during the test. Not recommended. Side note, surprised he's still a professor given his X posts.
short quizzes every other week along with weekly homeworks. midterm and a final but gives you a verbal study guide of everything on the quiz. VERY LECTURE HEAVY with no slides to take notes on, strictly what he is saying are what you need to take notes on. not a terrible professor but go to office hours if you are stuck and he or his TA will help.
Tough but very manageable class. Exams are hard but if you study enough, they are reasonable. Does a very good job relating the material to real life and things that will be relevant to you in the future. Very helpful excel spreadsheets.
Honestly only valueable thing I learned was to invest more and diversify my stocks. Never teaches off powerpoint slides, just puts up stocks on screen and rambles for half the class time. Drops 5 days you miss for attendance, 3 lowest quiz scores, and homework so that was nice. Other than that good luck with exams
Honestly the class itself isn't terrible and is fairly manageable. The hw is irrelevant to quizzes and exams. His lectures are interesting to say the least, but he's a funny professor. Just know terminology and how to use the excel sheets for exams and you'll be straight. Everyone saying good luck is just a flat out moron, you'll be fine
