Nice course, nice professor.

Boring...Doesn't teach you what's on the tests and digresses incredibly. Also, never around during his exams, managed to leave the country during the first 2 this semester.

tests are alot harder than the hw and what you would expect from the lectures...very boring...very nice...but put me to sleep every morning

He has a boring voice but is very nice. He returned my e-mails really quickly and was very receptive during office hours. The exams were kind of hard.
The prof is really helpful; he will even answer you questions during lecture. This course really helps you understand current economic issues.
Good man... knows a lot!
Boring Course, Good Teacher Though.
Deardorff loves the material and is very enthusiastic, but he is a very boring lecturer. I had difficulty staying awake for the whole 1.5 hours. His exams are way hard but he curves them pretty dramatically. Only take this class if the subject matter is very appealing. I got a B+.
Interesting lectures. Helps you understand applications of concepts into the real world.
boring but knowledgable
He has been teaching here since 1900, and my dad even had him when he was a Marxist(seriously)...Very boring, and lectures are irrelevant to the midterms which by the way are impossible...If you need this for B school, take it with anybody but him, and if no B school, dont take this class
He's the worst professor at this university. Doesn't use powerpoint or any visuals. Covers bare basics in lecture but homework and exams are IMPOSSIBLE! Do NOT take a class with this guy, he should NOT be teaching!
He's amazing in lecture his voice is slightly monotonous but he's really funny, in a very corny way, really knows his stuff, brilliant, I recomend this course if you are very interested in the topic
People complain too much about this guy; his voice can be a LITTLE monotonous, but for the most part he's VERY intelligible, gives conprehensive answers, and has an interesting sense of humor. I'd take the class again (and try a little harder).
If you can take someone else. He can be funny but lectures are very hard to get through. Pretty boring and hard to stay awake in. First midterm wasn't bad, but second was cummulative =/ He spends the first 20 minutes or so on wallstreet journals. Study guide is helpful.

he is very helpful... and his lecture is not really boring if u listen to what he has to say. His intermittent jokes are quite funny too.
Lectures cover ONLY basics. Tends to go off on tangents. Usually has to skip material to get back on track due to tangents. And then, homework is impossible, exams are worse. Don't take unless required!
considering the fact that it's hard to entertain 300 people in a dark auditorium, he's doing a great job. WSJ stuffs are his attemps to connect materials to the real world. He's amazing and quite funny if you appreciate, guess not so much if you don't. He's one of my favorite teacher in this school.
He should go home and teach his family for economics. Most of courses he taught are terrible. We don't know how he is a title professor. SUCK YOU!
probably the worst teacher at this school. does not care at all about teaching and it shows. the double whammy of him and my gsi made this probably the worst class ive taken at this school. also he's a bit of a jerk.
Deardorff is a very cool guy. His speaking style is straightfoward and easy to grasp. His is the authority on international economics...read his curriculumn vitae. He had credibility and connections, like most elevated UM professors do, but he really had alot.
Perhaps one of the worst teachers I've had at this school. Not only did he completely turn me off from economics as a whole, but almost put to me sleep during a class that could have been very interesting.
The worse class i've ever taken. Prof Deardorff is ridiculously boring. It's the only class I couldnt stay awake in at 4 in the afternoon! You learn nothing interesting. You are forced to memorize hundreds of useless facts; he will test on all of them. Exams are impossible. He is of no help whatsoever! 3 exams make your entire grade; dont do it!!!
The class would be ok if he didn't make us memorize a bunch of random facts in his exams (A LOT btw...). A lot of the things he teaches in this class are pretty useless too imo, I learned only a few important things. The rest were just random facts I have to memorize for his exams (the grade is determined by just 3 exams).
Ridiculous class. Regret having taken it - and having not dropped it soon enough... class grade determined by 3 exams - all of them which u haf to memorize USELESS facts... worst class ever
If you pay attention and go to class you will do well
I must say that he is a good prof. but this should be an 8 credit course. He asks for too much, he should realize that we are taking courses other than his course. He expects us to know facts from the WSJ such as the unemployment rate and other ridiculous stuff. He should be more considerate. Every exam is cumulative which makes no sense.

This class isn't all that great. Deardorff spends way too much of class time talking about the Wall Street Journal and endlessly talking about the same topic. His tests aren't that great mostly because you need to memorize pointless facts from WSJ articles. Overall, not that interesting of a class and a little tedious, but definitely do-able. DON'T BUY WSJ. Waste of money.
i hate the wall street journal. i like deardorff tho.
You can tell he is a brilliant person, but not always the most engaging teacher. Still a good class, but using overheads all the time got quite boring. Whatever he says-you don't need to subscribe to the WSJ as he posts all the articles online.
DO NOT BUY THE WALL STREET JOURNAL!!! You can do w/o it. Lectures are pointless as long as you read, and every Tuesday he spends 45 minutes talking about WSJ articles which is pointless. Good class to do the daily Soduku or crossword puzzle...I didn't feel exams were that bad as long as you do the HW and look over the old ones online
Terrible
He is a great professor and knows his work. Trust me! Taking his course enables u to discuss macro-economics. Take his course if you want to learn, but if you want to solve your Sudoku puzzle, its better you do that in your house or the restroom because his lectures are for paying attention and learning. And the best part is that he is unbiased.
course would have been interesting accept extremely hard to follow...lectures are unnecessary and hes very unclear.. aso tests are rediculously hard...good luck!
Deardorff- what a guy. 340 is a quality class and he gives great insights, often based on his expansive personal experiences, on the various merits and flaws (but usually positive value) of enhancing free trade. He's a breath of fresh air in this state/university which normally sides with protectionism. It's not bias, he just makes the truth clear.
Nice person, good professor. If you do the readings and his practice questions, you really should get an A.
You have to adjust to his style of teaching, but he is a very smart guy and keeps lecture very interesting.
I hated this class and him so much. His exams were really difficult. He wasn't helpful. VERY BORING. I got a tutor for this class and still ended up with a B-. Econ is supposed to be interesting, but not from him. get someone else!
Econ 102 has the potential to be a pretty good class. Unfortunately, Deardorff is most certainly NOT the professor to take it with. The class has a ton of annoying work including forced readings of the WSJ which you are tested on (in extreme detail)... Overall you need to put in a good amount of work to do well, and even then it's not guarenteed.
Tends to use too much outside readings. Too much readings for an econ course. But he is a well-informed professor that is good at answering questions. Easy course to take if you are doing it Pass/Fail
Deardorff is a good teacher, But he requires a ridiculous amount of remembrance for his exams......exams for this class are by far the worst i have ever taken.
Greatest prof. at UM. Tests are reasonable and prof. will help whenever desired, even when in India.
Deardorff is actually an excellent professor. But topic of economics in general is so boring that people tend to think that the professor himself is boring, when that simply isn't the case. Deardorff gives you plenty of past exams to practice on before taking the real test, so there is no reason why you can't get an A.
Lack of direction the biggest flaw in class. Facts are not elaborated on or placed in a larger context. A typical math-based econ prof. at UM (sadly there are many). At least he tried, though. Tests are pretty easy if you already have a background. Make sure you do the readings since they will be on the tests (oftentimes separting As from Bs)
NOT a good professor. Doesn't use powerpoint, draws on the overhead, so you can never go back to the notes if you miss something and he moves on. WSJ is a waste of time and you do NOT need to subscribe at all. He often "leaves you to look that up or figure something out" b/c he doesn't end up having time to cover it in lecture (b/c of no pwrpt)
Terrible professor. Lectures are a waste of time and extremely scattered. Exams don't reflect material learned throughout the course. Made me hate econ. Don't take it with him if you don't need to.
It's a joke that we have to memorize every article and WSJ questions from the whole year on the final. These articles should be there to understand how it relates to the real world, not a difference between an A to a B. Overall the class was alright.
This is by far the worst class I've ever taken at this university. I am constantly bored out of my mind and Professor Deardorff doesn't actually teach anything. All he does is stand in front of the class and babble and ramble. His tests are pretty hard. You need to read the book thoroughly and also read the articles that he assigns outside of class
This class is difficult, however if you read the book, the outside readings and pay attention in lecture you really should end up with at least a B. Lecture was boring, but the topics covered were very pertinent to course material. I got an A+ with an extreme amount of effort. This class was stressful and it constantly ruined my Thursday nights.
Professor Deardorff is very very good. He structured the class in a very organized way. I liked him very much. Some students didn't like him as much; however, the students who didn't like him were usually the same students who didn't study so much.
Great professor, great class. The material is real-world appliable and interesting. Deardorff is a great lecturer, although he can be boring. I took this class for fun and didn't really care about the grade but ended up with an A+. The homework was usually very easy. the only bad thing about the class was that WSJ subscription was a waste of money.
boring and slow lecturer although he is occasionally fun to laugh at (with?) material is kind of interesting but i tried both professors and don't like either one too much
Deardorff is a boring lecturer, I fell asleep about 11 times each lecture. The material learned in lecture does not reflect what is tested on the exam. The exams are difficult, not an easy class at all.
Had to take this class over @ Queens College beacuse of him Useless Wall Street Journal and exams that involve mostly your understanding of math instead of concepts.....GSI's aren't that good either...Half of the lecture is spent telling stories and Wall Street Journaling....and HW is retarded/hard If I were you, take this class at another college
Sooooooo boring, could never stay awake!
One of the most boring teachers destroys potentially interesting topics. The exams are like lecture, long, drawn out and difficult to pay attention to. Lots of weird math on exams not really shown in lecture which is annoying. If you want a nice nap, go to class because he will put you to bed.
Dont walk, run to another professor. Deardorff simply forces you to memorize the most useless information. It is easily the most information I have ever seen for an exam. He simply doesnt care, and his lectures are hard to get through.
boring class, weird curve that hurts your grade. memorization of useless facts, exams use old questions, no one goes to lecture. didn't even know we had a GSI
I've never met a person who has more sport coats with the suede elbow patches. If you want to learn 400 acronyms used in international economics, take this course, otherwise was useless!
Boring lectures and weak sections that do not prepare you for the midterm exams, which are significantly more difficult than material in class. Go to lecture to pick up basic concepts and GSI office hours to learn how to do the problems.
He is an interesting lecturer, and his class is enjoyable. However, his exams are, in my opinion, very unfair. They don't test basic concepts as much as esoteric details. If you enjoy learning economic models, and aren't worried about grades, then Prof. Deardorf is for you. However, his exams, be forewarned, are very difficult to prepare for.
Really, really boring. He puts up the powerpoint slides and podcast for his lectures so you don't have to go to lecture. The amount of information he makes you memorize for each exam is RIDICULOUS. He makes you memorize 250 slides full of information for each exam and picks out random acronyms and vocab words to define.
He is full of himself. Super boring, entertained trivial questions and comments that wasted class time. No wonder we never finished the powerpoints. Wants to know how to improve the course, but assures us he won't change it. Wish he would, this could have been a great course. Plus side: different tie every day.
I was excited to take this class and looked past all of the horrible reviews on this site. However, I should have listened. The material itself is very interesting, as are his lectures, but his exams were far too specific and difficult, and there is a minimal curve. He says he wants to change the class, but doesn't listen. Just beware and prepared.
Avoid him by all means. He gets lost in classes and takes weeks to finish marking papers. He's worse than the GSI
Worst professor in Economics department. Would not take a class with him again. Exams are not fair and do not test what is important in the course. Horrible lecturer and was very unhelpful during office hours. It is a shame that Professor Deardorff is the only one to teach Econ 340, because it could of been a great course.
My favorite professor at the university. Hard to get an A, easy to get a B, impossible to fail if you go to class. Teaches almost as much history as theory, little calculations, some memorization. Took class time to talk about current issues. responds to emails in 5 seconds if you have any questions. interesting class!
Although Prof. Deardorff makes the class interesting, the class is just poorly structured. The exams rely too heavily upon factual information and they test on too much for a 3 credit course. Don't expect a typical Econ course (it's different from any that I have taken thus far). I would recommend avoiding this class unless you need to take it.
My favorite class last semester. The Professor was awesome, and he incorporated economic news into the class too. But be prepared to put in a lot of hard work for this class, which includes memorizing a LOT of factual information, definition and acronym. I would highly recommend this class for its broad perspective
Alan is a brilliant man, a renowned economist, and his class is very interesting. Only, he has the malicious intention of making exams as hard as possible, resorting to offbeat questions and obscure acronyms in an attempt to trip his students. His class is worth it though.
terrible, simply terrible professor. he puts zero effort into his classes, extremely unhelpful
International Trade Policy. Seems interesting right? WRONG. This is the worst class I've taken at U-M. Deardorff is self-centered and arrogant. He patronizes students who try to participate. The lectures are tedious and boring. I sat with my friend, surfing Facebook and texting trying to evade the prof's eyes to save myself from public humiliation.
Alan Deardorff is one of the best professor I've ever studied with, let alone his world-class reputation. He gave very clear explanations on the hard-to-digest topics. Though he is a tough grader, he is quite fair on the grading policy based on your quality of work and attempts.
Professor Deardorff is one of the best Professors I've had at Michigan. He is one of the best trade economists in the world, yet takes the time to plan amazing lectures and work with students until they understand the material. Tests aren't easy, but are based fairly on the lecture slides and study questions posted online.
Easily one of the best Professors that I've taken at Michigan. This class will change the way you view the world and the world economy. It's by no means an easy A, but the material is very learnable if you work at it, and it's possible to ace the class even if you aren't an Econ major or have only taken 101/102.
Consistently scored above the class average and appreciate a challenging course when it is made up of genuinely difficult material. Do not appreciate a professor who intentionally makes his course more difficult than it needs to be, not through the content itself, but through the vexatious way he tests and grades students Lots of rote memorization
Too much memorization for a 300 level economics course. The material is designed to be for non-economics majors, so there's a LOT of focus on readings. Most of the exams were just regurgitated material of what we did in class and a lot of little details that you might not think were important. Memorize everything, acronyms, statistics, names, etc.
Currently stuck with the outcome of this class, as I didn't heed the numerous warnings on here. Please for you own sanity, DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS unless you are ready to spend a lot of hours memorizing stuff you may not ever see again. I definitely regret taking it. Even the GSIs says it is an unnecessarily hard class. STAY AWAY from this class!!!
Great lecturer in my opinion. Yes, there's a lot of work and reading, but if you really want a solid foundation in understanding international economics this is a solid course. Lectures super interesting. I'm taking this at the same time as ECON 102, and there's a lot of overlapping material which helps a lot. Yes, you need to read the textbook!!
Great and interesting lecturer. Study questions mandatory to get that A. Unless you've dropped by in office hours and introduced yourself he really isn't accessible (doesn't give that welcoming vibe when walking by him) outside class.
Tests you a lot on pure memorization, which doesn't enhance learning or critical thinking skills, but basically reinforces whats wrong with the education system. Memorize this, regurgitate it on an exam, bye. Not a great Professor, but the material is moderately interesting, could be worse.
This class has a lot of potential and covers some interesting, applicable topics; however, Deardorff pretends to teach and does not actually explain the concepts that he requires you to know for exams.
Entire grade is based on 3 exams and it's super unclear before you take them how hard it will be. The grading curve was eased this semester, but the tests still ask you about highly specific details in the readings that were never mentioned in class and aren't really relevant. Does post the slides, so you can skip, but overall wouldn't take again.
Get ready for the memorization game. The gist is that there are roughly 200 vocabulary words, and some lucky five will appear on the exam. No rhyme or reason to actually study. Buckle down and flash card it out.
