This class was supposed to be really easy. NO MORE!!! Thanks Dick
Profeesor Dick makes the class kind of boring. I thought the class was relatively easy. Everything is in the book. Read the book for youe exams and you will be okay. Do the extra credit experiments, that's how I got my A.
He doesnt like to see anyone. When you go to his office, he tells you go to his TA. This is how he teach you, but he tells you he has office hours. If you are a studious reader and can teach yourself, take this class. If your not, then dont.
This teacher is very funny and lectures are interesting to attend. Very nice professor, the only bad thing about the class is that there is only a midterm and a final... so you have to do good on both
This class depends on your interests in business. It is straight forward material, just a lot to remember. There are only two exams (fairly difficult), a group project (pretty easy), and some case studies (also easy). The workload is small, but studying for the exams is tedious. You need to attend lecture since the exam is half on that.
Go to class and take notes, for exams reread the chapters and loook over class notes
he makes concepts so much harder then they need to be... not a good prof. at all... not very helpful either...
He's a pretty good teacher, keeps class interesting. He tells corny jokes quite a bit, but they are usually funny. I enjoyed his class, he is a fair tester. He's not that accessible though, he doesn't reply to emails.
not a good prof at all. says the very first day that marketing is not just about advertising, but spends most of the lectures ranting on about advertising. very boring & hard to follow. you are better off reading the book for an hour than sitting through his lectures. make sure you get a good TA for recitation.
Class is sooo boring you will want to shoot yourself
one of the worst professors ive had. lectures are pointless to go to because he spends the entire time talking about advertising when advertising is only just part of what marketing is about. doesnt get through all of the material in the course because of this & still tests you on it anyways. also wastes time telling stupid jokes which arent funny.
He is not good at explaining things. Also, he hates spending time on students, but what he normally does is tell the students that you should go ask your TA. "What the hell?!" Is that called teaching? In addition to that, his exams are hard, and the grading scales can screw you up easily.
not a good prof at all. very boring & over complicates things too much. the first exam is pretty easy, but the other two are pretty difficult. you really need to study for those. group project is easy & only 2 case assignments. make sure you get a good TA for recitation.
real bad prof. wastes a ton of time talking about advertising after he tells you that marketing isnt just about advertising. last semester he didnt get to the section on retailing, but still tested us on it anyways.overcomplicates simple concepts and makes you do pointless calculations on the last 2 exams. get a good TA for recitation.
Alan **** is pretty much the worst thing to ever happen to me. Marketing is a really interesting topic and its a cool class, but he finds a way to make it really hard. His tests were basically impossible and so precise it made me cry at night. Go to class write down everything he says and read the book. Final project it a monster too, get good team

Seriously, Idk what these other people are talking about... This is the easiest class I have taken at UB. I am an accounting major and I thought I would hate marketing but this class made me actually like it a lot. Class was very interesting. Prof. told some corny jokes but they were funny in that dry kind of way. Easiest A I've ever gotten.
There are three tests (including final) for course, in which they get harder as you go. The final is mandatory. You have to do a group project in Recitation classes with a 15 pg paper due. He's a nice guy but kinda hard, 50% of tests are from the lectrue, the rest are from the book. Show up to class and study hard.
[Course Requirements: 1. 3 Exams (Including Final) 2. 2 Case Analysis 3. Group Project] The tests are based on lecture and the text so going to class is definitely helpful, the tests weren't too ridiculously difficult and he gave our class extra credit opportunities. The project isn't hard but get started early. Not too difficult to get good grades
Ya, I also don't know why he has negative reviews, he's very nice and crystal clear and really engaging in his lectures. makes marketing interesting!
Decent professor. Told some very corny jokes, but the class was manageable.
I hate this professor!! he is so boring!!! worst professon in UB!! i cant stand him.. he is so boring.. i hate marketing because of him
This class wasn't particularly hard. The material is boring, and he spends most of the semester talking about advertising, while simultaneously making sure everyone knows marketing isn't just advertising. Project is easy, don't overthink it. The exam questions can be tricky at times, but overall you don't have to study too hard to do well.
very boring, and he is very strict.. wont change anything in the syllabus to help you out. seems to not really care how students do in the class. ta's are very good tho..
horrible prof. class is so boring & his jokes are stpid. the guy doesn't know how to teach & isn't willing to help students. exams are somewhat hard, especially the last 2. group project is pretty easy tho. get a good group & a good TA for recitation.
You will be memorizing a lot of useless definitions, so that you can spit them back out on artificially difficult multiple choice exams (like all of the 300-level business classes at UB apparently). A general marketing class at a community college would give you a better working knowledge of marketing than this class.
Most worthless class ever! Makes a marketing major think twice about profession. Boring material, some funny moments but has no reliable information for a bright future!
There isn't much to say about Alan. Probably the hardest i've ever worked for an A; even thought I made the cut easily. You have to study for both tests becuase they are worth such a rediculous amount. The man is a hideous seal, but a fair teacher. I reccomend Arup Sen as a TA or as the teacher if you can get him.
He is NOT THAT HARD. I got an A fairly easy. 70% of the test material is from lecture, but 30% is from the textbook and is not mentioned in class. This makes it essential to read the chapters for the exam! recitation is easy, project is easy, exams are fair & manageable (MUST STUDY!), just go to the lectures and stop whining because you don't want
Lecture is manditory...clicker questions count as points. No matter how hard you study, tests were still very hard. Good luck with this one!
Class isnt as hard as everyone says as long as you go to class pay attention and take good notes. Remember specific examples he goes over because they will be on tests. Not much work outside of class besides studying for the tests which are a bit difficult. READ the text for the tests, at least go over the definitions and main points in the text.
Not as bad as anyone says! He is very interesting in lecture with funny tv ads, material however can get boring on certain days. His test are EXTREMELY fair. Uses examples from the lectures a lot and read the book. Very easy to get an A without much effort. I have an A- so far and i haven't done much work.
Relatively easy but his jokes are bad, tests are a little hard but review and read the book and he does clicker questions for attendance. Grossman for TA is awesome get a good group and start early for the project.
He was pretty interesting with many relevant examples and tv ads. Go to his class and take notes of whatever examples he gives because you will need them for tests. Read the book and focus on the bold words' definitions. Get a good group and good luck
Great teacher. Marketing may be one of the least interesting topics but Dick managed to keep me involved. Got to watch a commercial at least once a week which kept me coming to class. The structure of the lectures made it super easy to learn the material.
Trys his best to keep you entertained during class. Attend class and Write every single example he mentions down.A lot of test questions are based on example in class. Recitation...Take Sullivan she is the nicest and easiest teacher. She's awesome.
Tries very hard to keep your mind on the material he is teaching and he does it for a reason because a lot of the stuff he tests you on are on the notes and the other things he mentions while going over that specific note page in class. If you feel like it is important it probably is so write it down. Recitation is mandatory if you want free points
one of the best lecturers i have taken. He turns a dull subject into an almost mildly entertaining one. His tests are challening. Projectd are easy.
Great professor with interesting lectures. Keeps up to date on all technology, etc. Easy to do well, just attend the lectures
The guy is a nice guy who tries to be entertaining and interesting in class. I think that's great, but as a teacher I don't think he gets his concepts across well at all. His powerpoints are also absolutely useless and the book he recommends does not cover his tests well so going to class is advised.
Alot easier than the ranking shows. Like other have said, If you go to class and fill in the notes he provides and write down ALL the examples he gives, you will have no problem getting an A or A-.
Very easy class if you actually attend lecture. Take good notes especially the examples given in class. Would highly recommend, actually learned alot.
Very helpful teacher, if you need any help, just bring your notes to his office and he will walk you through it! Nice and interesting guy. Take him!
Very good professor. Pay attention to his in class examples and you will have no problem doing fine.
Final is crazy hard. Does plan out the class properly.
He does not know how to teach. His exam ask you about the small detail. His TA Mike does not review the exam properly.
Overall, he was a fantastic professor. He made some pretty boring material interesting, and it ended up being my favorite class of the semester. Make sure you go to class, study his notes, and read the book because tests have a lot of information on them. You have to work a bit, but its an easy A.
He is a good professor who makes the material interesting. The textbook isn't really needed to pass the class. If you attend lectures regularly, you'll be able to pass. Some of the questions on his exams are based on the videos that he shows in class! Overall, this was my favorite class taken so far.
In an attempt to relate to a younger audience he relates the material with inappropriate examples and video clips, like the faked orgasm scene from When Harry Met Sally to describe customer satisfaction. He seems like a nice enough person but very impersonal when it comes to questions/needing help. The lecture is averagely useful.
Alan has a quirky sense of humor that makes lectures decently entertaining. The material is interesting and relevant and he uses awesome video examples to hammer some concepts in. The tests are somewhat difficult. If you go to lecture and fill in the simple note structure, you will be golden though.
don't even bother going to lectures, the most boring lectures i've ever been to.. never went, week before tests I'd print out the lectures and study them and pass with flying colors. recitation is easy just show up and talk in class and you get points for just talking.. project is a group project so its also easy.. joke of a class
Lectures are pretty interesting. Tests ask a lot of specifics. Some are only given during the lecture. Notes are helpful
literally terrible, the TAs are fantastic and they should have taught the class.
You are graded on 3 tests, one group project and recitation participation. Tests are pretty tricky. Lecture makes the material seem very easy, however the test questions are application based examples which aren't talked about much in lecture. He provides note outlines but doesn't post notes online (you should really go to class).
This guy is extremely boring and the material is very dry. If you're looking for a class to get an easy A in, look elsewhere. Professor lectures in a way that makes the material seem to be very easy, but expects students to have a deep knowledge of topics come exam time. Amount of effort for the group project is ridiculous for an elective course.
Horrible lectures and the group project is graded at a masters class level, which isn't fair for students who aren't marketing majors. The project is A LOT of work. The exams are 60 questions each and have questions from the textbook. I never read the book and still managed an A so it's doable
Prof Alan's class was good not great. The material was easy but there is a ton of it. Lots of definitions, each one very similar to one another. Also, the grading scale is weird. The tests are progressively worth more and the group project is only worth 15% of your grade. REC is mandatory. Luckily, marketing is easy.
Bad professor, exams gradually increase in value with same amount of questions and way too specific. Class is much harder than it should be, and group project gets graded way to harshly.
Wow.... This class was my toughest this semester and it was my own major. Even though he does not take attendance, if you do not go, you will fail the exams. Take as many notes as possible!!!!! There are study guides that go around but none include the examples he uses. Choose solid partners for your group project in recitation. Praying for y'all.
Alan D. is a great guy but his tests are extremely difficult and if you end up with a bad recitation group it can be hard to pass.
dont skip class. even though attendance isnt mandatory all his tests are 90% based on his lectures and case studies from recitation. Final was more challenging but doable. you are only allowed to use your laptop in the first 2-3 rows of the room.
Does this professor even know that even non - marketing majors are enrolled in his class? Like it is completely baseless that he makes this course so difficult for students. I am a finance concentration and I will probably never ever be involved in marketing in my life, and hence I feel this course is just killing my GPA unnecessarily. Awful.
Worst professor I ever had, period.
Dry lectures, and there's always couple questions on the lecture that's on the exams. It gets worse real quick if you're stuck with some lazy people for the group project. Please, avoid him if possible. One thing that makes me still have faith in this class is Mike Krupski, his TA.
The first two exams weren't that bad but they were 48% of your grade. The final is 30%. The final was several times harder than the first two exams and it caught me off guard. I'm going to end up with a bad grade for the class because I know I didn't do super well on the final but it's worth 30%. The class is graded on 3 exams and 1 group project
Lectures are very boring so I recommend taking this online if possible, find a good group for the project, it'll make it a whole lot better. the way he grades can be harsh and he puts too much pressure on exams especially when the group project is a lot of work but isnt even graded heavily compared to tests. I didn't buy the book and did fine w/out
He isnt as bad as people make him out to be. His lectures are pretty dry which made it a little hard to binge them right before the exam but its doable. Exams are worth a hefty amount of your overall grade and it's EXTREMELY hard to get an A in the class. I got a 92% on every exam (literally) and came out with an A-. PICK A GOOD GROUP FOR PROJECT
During recitation you have to pick a group, make sure you pick a good one because this group project is the base of your overall final grade. The exams and the final project is the only thing this class is graded of off. His recorded letures are the most dry lectures Ive every watched. Just awful. Good Luck.
Alan isn't nearly as bad as these reviews make him out to be. I found his lectures enjoyable and didn't at all dread having to watch them. Exams are probably harder than they need to be, but it's good to be challenged. Getting an A was tough, but with the EC opportunities available, it is achievable. I did so without ever even opening the textbook.
Alan is one of the worst professors in upper-level intro business courses at UB. he is unbelievably lazy when it comes to responding or giving extra aid to students. the last exam is unreasonably hard and the group project is very time consuming, so really think about who you might work well with in the first couple weeks of class.
Probably the laziest professor in the SOM because he's the department chair of Marketing. Makes the subject of Marketing complex for what it is for no reason. Final was very hard and TA's are all just old men who are really into themselves and like to make students feel stupid. Never seen a group of more incompetent people have jobs. 0/10 class
Not sure why he has such negative reviews, he's really great at illustrating the concepts with examples in his lectures. The group project is hard so getting a great group is key. Exams are also weighted very high but watching his lectures makes you prepared.
He is now my favorite professor in the school of management. He was the only one out of all my classes to create these beautiful self-recorded lecture videos that were engaging and great for learning the material. The TA I had, Michael Krupski, was fantastic. He was friendly and a great educator. I only wish I took it in-person to meet them!
I was very happy with this course this semester. The exams seemed to have gotten easier than they have been in the past. Lectures were pretty interesting and worst scenario just put them on double speed if you are bored. Recitations were kind of useless but I ended up doing fine on the project.
-No use for expensive textbook -Entertaining lectures (long, but easy to understand) -Just watch the lectures and review and its a sure A -Recitation project was a different story, very difficult
He's just not a hard grader
sweetest professor I have ever had
worst professor at UB. The class lectures are unbelievably boring and long. I use to like marketing until this profesor made me hate it. Theres no reason for making the lectures that hard and boring so the student suffers instead of learn. The TA that I had Diana is a tough grader and the worst person I have ever met
He makes marketing very boring and difficult. The way the grading scale is constructed it is very hard to get a good grade.Marc is the worst TA who doesn't teach at all and don't grade until last week of the semester. You will learn how a professor can make easy concept and subject unbelievably hard
You have to take him to pass the class. It is hard to get an A in this class because how the grading structure is construct. Make sure to have a good TA because some reasons professor make marketing unbelievably boring and hard. Group projects consume lot of time but it's graded very harshly.
Really doesn't care about his students anymore
His lecture is boring and simple but his test actually heavy. The final exam was the worst and made the exam confusing. He doesn't take an account about the TA and how they are doing?.
Literally just watch his lectures to do well on the exams. They're really easy if you take notes during them which, admittedly, can be a little tedious. He's a great professor, but beware of Marc Adler if he's you're TA; he has no idea what he's talking about and grades group work pretty harshly.
His lecture are boring and his grading structure are made harshly so you can get lower letter grade in the class. First two exam was ok but the final exam was nothing like first two. His TA are old and don't want to teach and like to penalize with you for bad grade. He doesn't take complain from student about his TA incompetent.
Just awful professor
It seems like professor dick doesn't care about his students or his job anymore. He makes it so obvious that he just recycles material semester after semester. Also, the lectures are literally unwatchable. You can try increasing the playback speed but even then they're still painful to watch. Don't really recommend taking this course.
Professor Dick does not care about his students, he recycles material and is downright nasty if trying to gain clarity on an assignment. He does not care about his students, and it seems like the material at all. The lectures are unwatchable, and most of the TA's do not know what they're doing. interesting as marketing should be more engaging.
Exams are like 80% of your grade so if your not a good test taker don't be hopeful for a good grade in the class. In addition, recitations and group work have such little impact on grade when it takes a lot of time. The whole course is bogus and very unorganized.
He is the worst professor for Marketing department. His grading structure are made to punish students. The exams are also hard and it is very hard to understand what he will test you from his lecture. His TA are also bad especially Marc Adler. He is lazy and leave until end to grade. He didn't teach a single thing and a hard grader.
Professor Dick is simply terrible. The class is extremely test heavy. Professor Dick recycles dry lectures from COVID. He doesn't do any grading, and i'm sure he manages collects a 6 figure income doing essentially nothing. He should be removed from his position, It's almost as if he designed this class to punish the students required to take it.
It was the worst class I have ever taken at UB and by far the worst professor. I genuinely can not believe the university still employs him. The tests are ridiculous and the semester-long project is absurdly hard for no reason and the is graded harshly. Unfortunately for all of us, he is the only professor who teaches this class.
Has a big ego. He says a 25pt curve out of 1000 is a "generous" curve... To get a B- from a B, you would need 50 (it's 20 for the rest)... Additionally, the lectures are boring and you must watch it at like 2x speed. His class is so disorganized that the professor might ramble for 30 minutes straight on things that might NOT even be on the test.
His exam structure to make you suffer and get bad grade. The assignment and final project and was also time consuming and hard to get good grade. The lectures is boring and he doesn't care about the students because he is the chairperson of Marketing.
I don't understand why so many people have been complaining. His exams are very straightforward and cover material from his lecture. Simple and easy, the class doesn't take too much time. My TA Xinghui Chen is the best TA. After talking to everyone else in MGM301 I realized how lucky I am to have the best TA.
This professor is not bad. The virtual lectures are easily digestible and the exams have not been that hard. The TA's are a different story. If you're choosing this class you need to make sure you don't get a TA who grades your obscenely lengthy group project like it's a PhD dissertation. That's the only reason my rating is 4 and not 5.
The professor wasn't bad but omg DO NOT TAKE MURTHA AS YOUR TA. He grades so harshly and makes it tough for no reason. Other than that you should be fine. Make sure you have an active group for the group project.
This class is terrible, no homework makes the exams unbearably lecture heavy, and the exams are mostly just him rambling on about random things. Biggest waste of time for a class ever and one of my lowest grades at UB. Be prepared to write down EVERYTHING he says out loud in the lecture videos if you want to perform well on exams. Good luck.
Alan Dick is probably the laziest professor I've had the unfortunate experience of taking. He just sits at home and recycles videos from years ago to teach, the grade is based on exams based on lectures that have no correlation to marketing and for some reason talks about WW2. His TA's are old men who like to hear themselves talk and can't grade.
Alan Dick is a great professor, he is funny and his lectures are easy to follow. He has a low rating because some TAs are harsh graders. The low rating doesn't justify his teaching ability. He makes his lectures straightforward, very easy to get an A. I would recommend taking him!
Loved this class, one of the most enriching classes I've had so far. Alan Dick is the BEST!
Kind and caring professor, well structured class!
Easy class to get an A in if you do the bare minimum. Some people give low ratings because they don't study properly and then get a bad grade!
Alan Dick is my fav professor at UB, his exams are very clear and easy to understand, slightly challenging but if you prepare well it is a great class.
The worst professor I have had at UB. Class is based mainly on exams that are extremely hard and on material that was unclearly presented. Recycles lectures from 2020 where he goes on rants that do not pertain to the exam. The group project is a lot of work, and takes the whole semester, however it is not even equivalent to one exam.
He is the worst marketing professor ever. I don't recommend him and I think there are some good rating recently and it looks kind of phony. He doesn't know how to teach Marketing
This class and the grading scale is a joke. I got high 80's and 90's on all assignments and exams but somehow end up with a B in the class... like what a joke.
Awful professor and probably the most lazy one I have had at UB. The references in his lectures are places and brands that dont even exist anymore. He uses the same videos from YEARS ago and has the TA grade all of the work, not sure what he even does. Tests are really hard and the group project takes the entire semester.
I wouldn't recommend this professor to my worst enemy. Uses recorded lectures from several years ago with references that make zero sense. The exams are very hard & are more-so on the random movie or store references in the lectures rather than actual course content.
The professor speaks really slow, which is my only complaint. The material itself was interesting and relevant, including his examples. He mentioned a lot of household names and connected class concepts with real life information. If you don't watch the lectures and take notes, you will not pass the exam.
This class is a mixed bag - the professor has a specific teaching style, but if you engage with it, you can do well. Unstuck ai was really helpful for study prep.
Clear and Concise. I am currently in his MGM 625 class and if you do your work, you will do fine. He is good professor.
