he's interesting and fun and really easy to get along w/... pretty easy too.
just overall a great teacher and great guy!
I really enjoyed this class. He is basically story telling instead of teaching. It makes the class that much more interesting.
I have to disagree with everyone who says he's easy. I'm an A/B student but I got a C in the class and worked my butt off in there. He is not as easy as everyone says, and the reading load is a little extensive at times
I don't even like history, but he made it great!!! The key is listen and talk to him outside of class. I went from a low C to an A after I started talking to him about what I didn't understand.
he's the best.
His class was easy for me. I never did any of the readings in there. I went to class and took notes that I read over right before each test and made an A. He is a really good teacher.
He is so nice and very helpful! You don't have to read from the book to do well on his tests! He also is a pretty easy grader on the 2 books you have to read and write a paper on! He's a great guy and made US History fun!
I have to agree with everyone that said that he made the class enjoyable. As long as you take notes and study the class is easy. I had to study and do the reading to get a B.
Awesome History professor!!! I loved it!! Very intelligent and he will work with you, just talk to him and show some effort!!

A must have professor.
AWESOME Professor! He tells you how to study for his tests, how to take notes, and what is on the test, which makes them really easy. This quizes (3, he drops the lowest grade) are over one book, which is an easy read. He knows his info and he's pretty interesting as well. I def. recommend!!!
I LOVED HIS CLASS. B4 I TOOK THIS CLASS I HATED HISTORY...HE HELPED ME UNDERSTAD IT MORE. SIMPLE TESTS. PASSES OUT POTENTIAL ESSAY ?S 2 DAYS B4 TEST. BOOK REVIEW TOO BUT NOT TOO BAD. EASY TEACHER. EASY CLASS. MUST TAKE!!!
Excellent Instructor. He tells you exactly what he is looking for on his essays. You dont have to know any dates. He keeps the lectures interesting and fun. Time flies by. I definately recommend!
He was a good professor, but I took him in the summer and it was very hard!! There was just way too much material. I would not reccommend him for summer classes unless you really like to study!
Even though it was just gsu. he was a good teacher. only big thing was you had to come to class. think eveyrone who showed up made an A. only 4 assignments all year. Very easy and very nice teacher. Lets out early alot.
He was a great teacher. Loved the class
I took his class over the summer and was dreading it but it ended up being one of the most interesting classes i have taken at Gsu. He's a great teacher and is very willing to help if ur having problems...def. reccomend his class!
One of the best teachers I have ever had! He made the class so interesting and told everything like a story! He actually made you want to know more! Definately take him!
His class is pretty easy. Just go and take notes on the lectures and you should be alright. His lectures are actually pretty interesting. Sometimes he acts like the concepts he's talking about are so extraordinary that they'll be over the heads of the students, and it comes off a little condescending. Other than that He's a pretty good teacher.
Downs was proabably one of my best teachers so far. Lectures were interesting and clear. You have to be a good note taker though; no powerpoints. Tests are easy if you pay attention and study your notes
Class was only 3 months but he cancelled class for a week. Big group project. A couple papers but not too hard. Boring movies and the final is over.
I absolutely loved his class! Very entertaining, keeps lectures interesting. Very helpful and nice. Tests are easy as long as you study your notes and reading the book is a good idea since he ALWAYS had questions from the book. He didn't use powerpoints, so you have to be a good note taker, but he practically tells you what to write down.
One of my favorite professors here. Really makes history interesting which is hard to do. I hated history until I took his class. His tests are difficult but he gives you the essay questions prior to the tests. I definately recommend him
Very interesting professor. Tells history like a very long story. He keeps your attention. There is no attendance policy, however you should go everyday b/c there is A LOT of notes! Also read the material that he requires, it will be VERY HELPFUL on the exams! Only 2 exams, a book review, and the final! I highly recommend taking him!
I took Dr. Down's during summer semester. He is an awesome professor! Lectures are interesting and he's really funny. Going to class is helpful because there are a lot of notes. Tests are kind of hard but not impossible. Loved this class and I hate history.
Class seems easy but its not. Tests are crazy. Studying doesnt ensure youll do well.Class is straight lectures and sometimes he has props. He does make history seem like a story. Just go everyday and listen up OR take some one else.
Downs is an amazing story teller, history has never been so interesting to me. take good notes and actually read the book...i know you wont but you'll definitely get a better grade if you do.
He is really good! He does tell it like a story--makes it interesting. The tests require an essay. For honors, he made us do a 10 page research essay. He "requires" reading, but he gives you specific sections to look over right b4 the test. It's still time-consuming, but it's good.
AWESOME TEACHER!! So nice, will help you with anything. Cares about you and your grade. Definitely recommend him!!
Amazing teacher, brings the class and history to life. go to class and read the book and you will be good. there IS a lot of reading, but if you do it you will be great. listening to him teach it is like you listen to a story. loved it - one of the best teachers i have taken at GSU

Hes a great teacher, just make sure you take good notes and go to class. The notes are mandatory for your grade.
He's one of the best professors I have had at Southern. He covers almost everything on the tests in his lectures and gives you the pages you need to read over again. His tests are tough but if you find somebody to study with it helps a lot. Make sure you go to class everyday, if you miss a day there is a chance you'll miss comething important
Very very good professor. Teaches what the text books sometimes don't want you to know which makes history very interesting. Read. the. book. Two chapters per week and the tests will be much easier. Notes just aren't enough. I highly recommend Downs.
Great teacher!
Great teacher! L February 0 red Rocky
He is a cool teacher and really puts you at the actual history seen (very visual). He giveslecture notes which are 60% of the test and the book is 40%. The problem is that there is not enough grades. Only 2 tests and a final test and essay each worth 25%. So if your not a good test taker, I don't reccomend

By Far my fav professor.. I had him for a civil war class and I LOVE IT! he was very understanding when I missed classes, etc. Being a history major, he is DEF. the best! you HAVE to read, but in what history class do you not? and its all relevant
Teaches class, lives his subject. I understood things that I've never made connections on before. You actually SEE history; what made what happen, and why. Awesome professor!! Read the book, take notes, and come to class.. Wish I needed more History classes!
Professor Downs is an all around amazing teacher. I in general hate history but he definitely made it interesting. I took his summer quarter it was a two hour class for four days a week. Reading is a must but definitely dont have to read to pass the class. I loved him and wish he was teaching my other required history class. Definitely recommend
Great teacher, definitely loves what he teaches. Only 2 tests, plus a final, and reading the text is definitely necessary. You will have to work for a good grade, but its definitely worth it.
Great teacher. Really knows his story and knows how to teach it. Tells it like a story and makes it interesting. Plus only 2 test a final and 1 paper.
Really awesome class. I'm big on US history and he does it justice. The only thing I was disappointed on was how little time we spent on ww2 it was seriously like 10 minutes! Exams are def easy to make a high B or an A if you go to class
I graduated back in 2001 and I wasn't sure what I was going to do for a career. Professors like Dr. Downs inspired me to become a teacher. I still think of him when I teach any related to the American Indians. Thanks Dr. Downs for making a difference to me and for GSU.
Upper division history courses with him definitely require you to attend class, take notes, watch the movies, and read your book. He loves what he does and it shows and he expects good participation. You will have to work for an A but it's definitely possible if you put in the effort
Great teacher!!! Very understanding.
Downs is a great History teacher. Uses word slides. I went into the final with a 74 average and made a B+ in the class. There are 2 tests and a final. The final will have an essay question but he gives them to you prior to the exam. Attendance counts for 20% of grade, very helpful. TAKE him.
I took him over the summer for IDS. He is awesome! Very laid back, easy easy A. I made a 74 on the midterm, and still made an A in the class...All there is is a midterm and final group presentation, and basically you make an A or F in his class. He canceled class a TON and honestly, it's just an easy good class. TAKE HIM.
I love Professor Downs, he is awesome and cares about his students. His class does require a good amount of reading, but so do all history classes and it is not bad if you stay on top of it. This class was extremely interesting and it has a little something for everyone
I had him for IDS. Nice guy. There isn't much work to this class. There is a group presentation, a short paper, midterm about movies shown in class, another paper, and an essay final. Cool class to take.
Where do I begin.. Professor Downs is SUPER CARING. I was struggling in his class & explained how I am a visual learner, so he started showing videos & gave extra credit. There is a lot of reading, but he's so nice & willing to help that it's worth it!
Downs is AMAZING!! I had him for my fye, which was Americans and Free Speech. He cares about what his students think/how they're doing, and he knows what he's talking about. One paper, easiest A in college. No doubt.
He was an amazing teacher! The tests about 50% lecture notes and about 50% book.. so read the book! It's obvious that he cares about what he's teaching about and that he cares about his students. If he sees that you're trying he is more that willing to help you out. Take His Class!!!
Had Downs for Turning Pts and Connections. So far we have done a 7 pg paper, formed groups to do group projects (based on your favorite music genre) and took the midterm. The midterm is based on Journey of Man (YouTube) and Guns, Germs and Steel (Youtube) which we watched in class. Midterm was 33 questions long. Take good notes from the movies!
I had Downs for U.S. History, and he is definitely the best history teacher I have ever had! I hate history, but he made it interesting, and I actually listened during class! The only negative is that there is A LOT of reading assignments, but I would definitely reccommend him. He's passionate about the subject and has a good sense of humor.
Dr. Downs is an incredible history professor. There is a moderate amount of reading in his Honors U. S. History class; however, majority of the materials on his test are taken from his lectures, which are always entertaining and interesting. He did require us to read "Huerfano," which is about Hippies, but other than that the class is excellent.
I LOVE HIM! he is very easy going I made a B on all his test and never really read the textbook. I would just skim the chapters! However his test are very easy! You will love him
Super nice and helpful! Tests are straight off notes and the readings. He actually cares about teaching and helping all of his students. Will totally help you out with your grades.
I thought he was hard. We had 2 books for this class and he expects you to read every page of both. The final was unrealistic. Essay question was half of the exam and he expected you to fill a blue book & then there were still 50 mult choice.I only missed 1 class, took awesome notes & got a horrible grade. IF U DONT LIKE TO READ DONT TAKE HIM
He was very helpful and his lectures were very interesting
Awesome teacher! Before this class I always daydreamed in history classes, but Mr. Downs combination of personality, humor and knowledge makes his lectures very interesting. There is quite a bit of reading that you will have to keep up with if you want a good grade but this is college so that should be expected. Get this professor!
Dr. Downs is one of the best professors/teachers I've ever had. He completely changes your outlook on history and makes you think! Lectures are interesting and class flies by. 2 papers and 3 tests, lots of reading but it isn't bad. Talk to him about your grades and go to class and you'll get a B or even A. TAKE DR. DOWNS!!!
Dr. Downs is the best teacher I've had at Southern. He makes his lectures interesting so it is easy to pay attention. He requires a lot of reading, but if you do it then the class is easy. He really cares about his students and is willing to help. TAKE HIM!
Awesome. Helpful. Makes you read, but lectures are 60% of tests and his lectures are great. You must read. You will not survive without reading. However, Downs is always open to help with any problem you may encounter with the class.
Professor Downs is a very intelligent person. Honestly if you love learning new things and opening up your mind, he's your guy. However, you must read. Do not procrastinate. Also, go to class. You won't regret it because you always learn something new and it's not a waste your time at all. Totally awesome professor.
Very straightforward professor. There are 2 tests, a book review, and a final. He is interesting to listen to and is a really genuinely nice guy. If you want to succeed, you can. Attendance is not mandatory, but he does pass around an attendance sheet from time to time to check in with who is actually coming to class.
I took Dr. Downs for a First Year Experience class. The class was easy, and Dr. Downs is a really helpful and friendly guy.
this class is a TON of reading, overwhelming at times. If you're looking for an easy A, this is not the class for you.
If you don't like to read then do not take this class. He is a great teacher and a nice guy but there is so much reading it's overwhelming.
Professor Downs is awesome! I took his Free Speech class for my FYE and he is the easiest professor. I plan to take him for Global Citizens. If you are thinking about taking him, I HIGHLY recommend him.
He is an interesting teacher who teaches outside the box. He's easy to listen to & focus on. Take notes and go to class. He is very hard with A LOT of textbook reading. He doesn't go over all that's in the book either so READ! The book review book is very boring and long. I don't recommend him unless you like reading or are taking less hours.
I took professor downs for FYE and if I have to take a history class he teaches, I am taking him for sure! He's very laid back and extremely helpful. He encourages you to think on your own and has a wit that I seem to find very funny.
Dr. Downs is a great professor and person. His lectures are always interesting, and you can always ask him to explain something again if you ever get confused. GO TO CLASS. I never missed class, barely read the book, and still made an A. Tests are 60% lecture 40% book. Downs isn't the prof for you if you always skip. You won't regret going to class
He is great! His lectures are so interesting and easy to understand. He makes everything you've ever learned about us history a lot easier to comprehend. He randomly takes attendance and will give you a grade based on how you participate/pay attention in class. I actually made a high B, but he rounded up to give me an A, so he really cares
This class always kept me interested! He made sure you had all the notes you needed by telling the class when something he said would for sure be on the test. Although if you don't like reading, I would suggest you don't take this class. Its very important that you read every chapter he assigns, and go to all his classes so you have the right notes
VERY EASY CLASS TAKE HIM FOR FYE 1220 EASY A
One of the best professors at Southern. He wants students to understand the back story in History instead of memorizing events. Test are a little tough and there is a lot of reading but if you're looking for a passionate teacher that you can enjoy learning from, Downs is it.
He is very personable. Definitely go to his office hours- trust me it helps! The class requires two text books and a lot of reading. Tests are difficult, final is literally "death by Downs". Attendance is not mandatory but lectures are not bad, so go. The more he sees your face the better off you are.
Really good professor He lectures in a way you can understand. There is a lot of reading but if you pay attention and read what he tells you to you will make an A. I would love to have him again. If you have to take this class I would definitely choose him as my professor.
Prof Downs is the best history teacher i have ever had. He is very passionate & lectures in a way that makes you remember everything, and he doesn't make you memorize dates or anything like that. There is A LOT of reading but tests are 60% lecture 40% reading. He rarely takes attendance but you should still show up. Would definitely take him again!
Alan Downs is an awesome teacher. His tests are hard, but if you study you'll do fine. He will give out the study guide 1 week before. He has 2 tests plus the final and 2 quizzes. Two books are needed, 1 will help you with the quizzes and the other there is a lot of reading, but go to the book website and find the outline for each chapter.
Professor Downs is by far the best professor I have taken at Georgia Southern. I recommend him to anyone taking U.S. History. His lectures are very interesting and I actually find myself wanting to go to class. His tests are easy if you pay attention and read the chapters outlined in the study guide.
He gives two quizzes , two tests, and a final. If you go to class an participate, then he will see your effort and deem you as a favorite. His favorites tend to have some benefits when it comes to grading. He does not give extra credit or curve tests. There is a lot of reading, and tests come from the lectures paired with the readings. Not too hard
Downs has been my favorite professor at Georgia Southern BY FAR. He is very intelligent, but he explains everything in a way students can understand. He's pretty funny too. There are only 4 grades for the entire course. 2 tests. 1 paper, and a final. He gives study guides for every test. He says attendance isn't mandatory.. BUT YOU NEED TO GO!
Great teacher. Easiest class I've ever taken. Just show up to class (which is once a week) and you'll make an A no problem.
Downs is the coolest professor I've ever had. He's very passionate about history and teaches it very well. Very easy going and funny. There are a few very easy assignments, the rest are tests. You need to study a good bit for the test if you want to do really well.
Dr. Downs is one of the best professors I have had at Georgia Southern. He is very passionate about history, especially the civil war. He has a laid back personality and his lectures are very intriguing. He makes things easy to follow along with for the most part but you must pay attention and take notes. Reading is mandatory for tests!!!
Downs is a really great prof. but I believe he makes you read too much. He assigns 2 books at the beginning of the semester & by the end you will have read both pretty intensively. He has 2 tests & then the final, none of the multichoice questions are cumulative but half the final is multichoice & the 2nd half is a written paper that is cumulative.
He is a very easy class to take. He does assign a lot of reading and only a few assignments, so if you fail one, get ready to fail the class.
History is not my thing and this class is tough! But, Downs makes it really interesting and his lectures aren't too bad. His teaching style didn't really work for me, but he has been at Southern a long time and really cares about his students. Only 2 tests, 2 hw, and a final, so be prepared. The reading is an insane amount. Not impossible but tough
Although he makes lectures interesting for someone who isn't into history, expect to read alot. If you read and go to every class you'll pass with an A.
Great lectures, lots of reading, hard class
No homework hardly except when you have to do a mini assignment. Fairly easy, you watch videos and this is where your midterm comes from. Everything else, you fairly work in a group besides the Mascot Survey. Interesting class focusing on the Native Americans and indigenous people around the world. I expect an A.
Professor Downs is a super chill guy. He understands the class is a FYE class and pretty much gives you good grades as long as you do your work. You do have to attend class, attendance is a big part of your grade. He grades very easily and you should make an A as long as you turn in your assignments. Take this class!
A lot of reading for this course and the tests were very hard. The lectures were super interesting but just listening in lecture is not enough to do well in this class. Two textbooks were required and both reflected on tests. Not the worst class in the world but I would not try to take his class again!
Dr. Downs really cares for his students and wants you to do well and succeed. There is lots of reading for this class that shows up on the tests so if you don't read then you're in trouble. However, he puts reading guides up before tests usually that are helpful. The tests are hard but if you go to Dr. Downs he is always willing to help.
Professor Downs is the best! he is caring, understanding and really funny. FYE with him is really fun and doesn't feel like a class at all.
His tests are almost impossible no matter how hard you study. You read two textbooks constantly. Do not take him, there are many easy straight forward US professors to take. He is not by any means an easy A
This was a very hard class for me, but Professor Downs was always helpful. His lectures were great, but his tests were hard.
This class is not an easy A and there is a lot of reading, but he definitely is willing to help you. You will have two textbooks be sure to read them because you have only have 2 test and 2 essays. The final has 2 parts a multiple choice and a essay portion.
If history isn't your subject DO NOT TAKE HIM!!!! Class is not mandatory but if you don't go you'll miss the lectures. I thought I made an A on the first test, but I ended up failing it. His tests will trick you.
A great professor. Since it is a FYE course attendance is an essential part of the grade. Class discussion is great and almost all of the class has a wonderful time.
Lots of work, a lot of reading, a lot of preparation for exams. Don't take him if you have a choice.
Makes you work for it, but so worth it. Says you have to read - you'll be fine if you utilize the online tools - mainly flashcards and practice quizzes, in addition to lecture notes. Attendance isn't mandatory but you'll fail if you don't go to class. Only grades are 2 tests, final, and 2 homeworks (easy writing assignments). Tests are pretty easy
Professor Downs was amazing, especially if you're even remotely interested in Native American History. He has personal ties and really knows the material. Be prepared to do A LOT of reading, watch A LOT of videos/documentaries, and take essay-formatted tests. No real grades in the class except tests and a book report.
He's great to take for the FYE class. very very understanding if you have a conflict with the class. I was in band and had to miss a couple of classes due to parades or trips, he always excused me. Very funny and gave great lectures.
He understands it's just FYE. You have an easy semester group project & even easier survey project. Midterm is based on a documentary you watch. Just pay attention and you'll be fine. Final asks you to answer a couple questions about the material from the midterm documentary and your group project essay style. If you paid attention, you'll be fine
It's an easy class just simply show up and complete the work assigned.
Professor Downs is without doubt the best professor that I have had at Georgia Southern. He is extremely caring for his students and truly wants to see them succeed. His lectures are interesting even for someone who doesn't love history, and it is obvious that he is passionate about teaching.
He is probably one of the best professors I have ever had. if you just show up you make an A. 10/10
HIs lectures are super interesting and makes you enjoy class. You have to read a TON in order to get a good grade. If you want to learn take him, but he definitely isn't an easy A.
Needed to take two independent study courses to finish my senior year. He had me read two books on the civil war and it was an awesome experience. I would then come in and review the readings with him. Great teacher for a History Major or someone looking to take his classes for fun
Professor Downs is an amazing professor, I went through a hard time in my personal life which causes me to miss a bit of class and he was very helpful and lenient with me. As long as you try your best and communicate with him when you need help/ going through something you should have no problems in his class!!
I loved having him as a history professor. He does ask you to do a lot of reading but it is possible to squeeze a B out of his class without doing it . Just show up to lecture and do the homework and you should be fine .
There are 3 home assignments (papers), 2 tests and a final, so not really any room to slack. After the final, I had a 86 and he bumped me to an A. With that being said, I developed a relationship with him outside of class. He doesn't do extra credit, but he says if he likes you enough he'll help you get what you want.
Downs is a great professor to take for a history class. The class focuses very heavily on the lectures with a few movies. His homework is very important, but it also has interesting prompts. I never used either of the books and I made an A (seriously the homework essays are important) and by using my notes I did just fine on exams.
Loved professor Downs! His lectures were always very engaging, and interested people that weren't even that interested in the subject. Lots of reading that is required and you need to be in class or you'll miss out. Overall it was a great class and as long as you do the work you'll pass.
Going into this class I just knew I would have to get the class changed because the lecture would be too boring, but as soon as he started lecturing about history you could tell he was very passionate about it. The reading was required but I never read anything and did pretty well. He's a talented lecturer and will offer lots of help if you need it
I wish I never took him, but he was the only Professor left for this course. So much reading. He doesnt post his PowerPoints on folio so you have to be prepared to write down all the notes. Very little assignments so its really hard to get your grade up. The study guides are like a 100 terms. The study guides did not help with the test.
Tests have some common knowledge
4 tests, 2 homework papers. 1 extra credit opportunity. He asks you to read chapters (some don't). If you read 2 a week then you should be good. They have test answers in them. Open note tests. I have made an A on every assignment and will come out with an A for sure. He is also really cool and tries to make class as fun as it can be online.
This man is one of the best history professors I've ever met. He's personable and you can really tell he loves what he does. I would take him again in a heartbeat.
Prof Downs is super nice, he was always willing to answer my questions and clarify things when I needed clarification. He doesn't post the powerpoints or record the zoom meetings so the only way to get notes is to go to class, but apart from that I really can't complain. We only had 6 grades but tests were very easy to pass.
I took his online 2110 class and all of the exams are open book. He gives you plenty of extra time on the exams. There were only 2 paper HW assignments. No extra credit which is a bummer. He only posted PowerPoint slides so you are just reading powerpoints to get information. I never did the readings and still did well. Don't buy the textbook.
He made what he taught really interesting, which made it easy for me to absorb all of the information. The tests were all open book and open notes which was a blessing. He's just an all-around great guy.
easily the best prof ive ever had. he understands that some things are more important than school. i took him in the summer and there were only 5-6 grades so i feel i couldve done better but he makes all his own tests. all the info is given and the questions are not mad to trick you. i love this guy. 10/10 rec. 3 tests, 2 essays (easy), 1 final
Timely answers his email. Textbook is extra reading. Follow the powerpoints. Understand what you are reading and take notes. Know and understand the terms. 4 test -multiple choice, and 2 essays- follow the instructions. Follow what he says and asks, and you will do well in his class. Made the subject interesting. I didn't like history, but now I do
Dr. Downs was very direct. He was effective in communication and made his lectures SUPER engaging! I TRULY enjoyed his class. I learned so much about U.S. History that I never thought before! I loved how he would emphasize the importance of historical concepts and event, calling them "Trees!" Would take again. Hated history, now interested in it!
This guy is awesome. I took him for the summer course my first summer here. He was very caring about his students, and incredibly knowledgeable about the subject, making me love history and take further classes related to it.
Downs was an incredible professor. He has been teaching for over 30 years and is very versed in history. The tests are online and open note so as long as you attend the lecture and read the specified chapters you will get a good grade. There are also two homework essays that are only 500 words long and are just a reflection on a documentary.
Professor Downs was an amazing teacher. His lectures were very enjoyable and easy to follow along. For every test it is open note and open book, so as long as you go to class and take good notes you should be fine. There are two homework assignments that are a one page essay over history videos, but they aren't bad.
Best US History prof. Lectures are genuinely interesting and fun. There is a textbook and he stresses reading it, but you don't really need to. Tests are all online and multiple choice and are usually easy; there is some textbook content but nothing you can't look up or guess. Two essays (500 words) that are a bit time consuming but not hard.
Prof Downs is one of the best professors here at GSU. I hated history coming into this class but from day 1 he made it interesting. If you have the opportunity to take him, do it! Great guy and truly cares about you and all the test are on socratic lol. 2 HW assignments but super easy all you have to do is watch a video. Book= didn't read a page
Professor downs wast by far my favorite professor in all my college career. If you are taking us comprehensive survey rush to get a sit with him. He is very caring makes his classes not so boring and keeps up with all his students despite how big his classes are. His test are online in folio and lectures are in person just show up take notes.Easy A
Professor Downs is a great teacher. I am not really into history classes, but he explains everything well making his lectures interesting to follow and understand. There are two homework assignments which are two essays. He is very responsive to his emails. Exams are online.
This professor is hands down the best professor Ive had so far. Top tier amazing! Hell make you care more about historical events than you ever have, and thats coming from a passionate history buff lol. Would 100% recommend taking him if your a solid test taker and love/respect history.
Decently easy, Just be prepared to read 2 chapters a week (can rage from 30 pages to 60 basically) Just pay attention in class fr. His tests arent that easy but decent. He's a cool guy though and makes it interesting and knows his stuff.
many many chapters per week to read but never addresses anything in the book. cancels class often, but doesnt help with questions on the slides he posts for those days. says you dont need to know it and wont explain it further, but it will end up being a major topic on the tests.
Be ready to read a lot of chapters, he will give you about 8 pages of key terms, and only have about ten terms on the test, he will say people who complain about the exam are those who don't read but that isn't it, don't take this course if you struggle in history and don't like reading long chapters in a week, exams are in person not online
He is very nice but exams in total are 80% of your grade. All exams are in person and personally I struggled on getting above a 70 on each one. His class is very interesting though and overall I did feel like I learned a lot even though test questions where very particular and tricky.
Just take it online. He stressed this course isn't like HS history of having to memorize people, documents, events yet that is exactly how the tests are. His lectures are taught in a story telling fashion which is nice and all except it does not help when it comes to the test. 1/3 of each tests came from his lectures the rest came the e-book.
All assignments and exams are essay based. HEAVY on reading (like had us reading 3 books at the same time), this class is challenging if you do not do well with an auditory teaching style. His exams are 2 writing portions and terms. Attendance not required but will absolutely fail if you don't go. He needs to feel warm and fuzzy about you
This professor is genuinely the best professor I have every had, and I have had plenty. He cares for the class and cares for what he is teaching. His tests are very easy, although the first I struggles on bc I did not know what to expect. TAKE HIS CLASS!!!!!! The class is easy and he is the best seriously.
Dr. Downs is a great professor, he is a very nice and funny guy and makes history very interesting with his stories. Attendance is not mandatory but it is definitely going to help you out in the long run because half the stuff that you are going to write in your notes is not on the powerpoint, it's him directly telling you.
Graded by four tests that reflect lecture and textbook material, along with two homework assignments and one extra credit. Provides study guides for each test. Unfairly has favorites that he grades differently.
DO NOT BE FOOLED. I took a class with this teacher because of the reviews and if you are not majoring in history it is awful. Only has 4 exams, 2 hw grades and that's it. No homework or quizzes to cushion your grade! His tests are very difficult and he expects you to read every page of the textbook! Very uncaring for your grade.
I took him online it was easy had 2 500 word essays, had to watch a video and respond to it. The tests were also easy, I didn't read the textbook at all because it was online and open note. Overall great professor .
When you see the bad rating, I know what you're thinking "Oh I was amazing at history in high school so I'll be fine" DO NOT THINK THAT!!! There are 4 tests worth 20% each. His lectures are boring because he just stands there and talks, he puts no emotion into it. He gives us 50 page readings a week and they're boring. DO NOT TAKE HIM!!!
Professor Alan Downs, is ok in my opinion, he great at telling historic stories, and this make the lecture bearable, not interesting. I hate that majority of grades are exams( total of 4 and 20% each) it makes it very stressful to get a good grades. If you aren't a good readers, and struggle with anxiety for exams I don't recommend him.
Professor Downs is genuinely a good professor however, if you are not a good test taker do not take this class. I only missed one lecture the entire semester and studied for hours for each test and still was barely passing. He does care and is good at lecturing though. This class is just very hard to be successful in because of test.
ACD is a great professor, but beware if you aren't a good test taker. I understood everything he said in class, but for some reason, I couldn't understand the tests. Meet with him if you need help though, because he will offer new ways for you to study, and he is willing to help as long as you DO THE READINGS! They're long, but they will help!
I've never enjoyed history, but I genuinely enjoyed his class. He's very passionate about history and you can tell. However, do NOT think that this is an easy A. This is the toughest class I've ever taken. If you struggle with reading or you're not a good test-taker, this class is not for you. The study guides are very convoluted.
Professor Downs makes history come alive with his engaging lectures, but this class is no easy A. Prepare to do the readings and stay on top of the exams. unstuck ai was a game-changer for my study prep.
Professor Downs' class for US Comprehensive Survey was VERY difficult. Tests are hard to understand and didn't go with the study guides well. Unless you read every page of the text book this class will be very hard to do well in. Although, he is a great lecturer, his powerpoints/notes do not go well with the test.
Professor Downs is an extremely difficult professor. He barely gives any other graded assignments other than tests that are EXTREMELY difficult. He moves super quick in his lectors and moves past very important topics that clearly will be on the test very quick. DO NOT take this class unless you thouroughly enjoy history and already know a lot.
Yes, he does assign a lot of reading, but that makes up 40% of his 50-question test. The book is free and online, and he provides it. The homework he gives is writing a 500-word essay, and it wasn't hard at all. That was probably my favorite part because the videos were really interesting. take good notes!!
really just a chill guy
i fully believe there is no reason anyone should fail this class. while there are only 4 test and 4 home work assignments the hws are just essays on movies and are very easy to do and they are 40% of the final grade ! So if you arent a great test taker as long as you don't massively fail every test you will do just fine!
His exams are lecture heavy so take good notes in class . His lectures are super interesting so it's not hard . You do have to read the textbook he assigns but it's not horrible . Overall a pretty easy class .
Grade relies heavily on 4 tests and 4 home work's. Attendance isn't mandatory but exams are lecture heavy, so come to class and make good notes. Theres a required textbook of 28 chapters, each test contains 7 chapters and its pretty long. Posts his powerpoints 1 week from the test.Other than that, he's a cool guy and his classes easy to understand.
Grade relies on 4 tests and 4 homeworks. Attendance isn't mandatory, but most of the test info comes from lectures, and he doesn't post the slides until a week from the test. The readings are pretty long, but take notes as some small details might come up on the tests. Really chill and nice guy; you can tell he likes what he teaches.
Do not take this class, he has 4 test grades worth 20 percent and 4 homeworks worth 5 percent, leaving very little room to make improvement if you don't do too well on a test. He also makes his own tests and makes the questions incredibly confusing mind you this class is a pre requisite so majority of the students aren't even history majors.
