Mono-tone, boring class. Lectures are pointless. Only good thing is that tests are open book/note and you can use old tests from friends right in front of him.
He's always available to the students and I think he sincerely makes an effort to be helpful. Comes across as a friendly, nice, but smart guy.
Boring as hell and a prejudiced guy.
Great guy, good professor. Always ready to help.
Finance is a hard class, but he is a good prof. He really does try to help you. He isn't funny and isn't very interesting, but he is helpful and very smart.
BORING and NOT A GOOD PROF. I really didn't learn anything from that class. The spreadsheets are a waste of time and his final was impossible. Tests were all open notes but still very hard.... and then the final was closed. Made no sense.. screwed us.
Tough but fair. Good prof.
Boring but good and helpful.
worst class ever.
Worst teacher I've ever taken! Stay away!
His class is impossible. Take someone else.
He's a nice guy, knows his stuff. Good teacher.
Go to class and do what he says, and you'll do OK.
had the class for 3 hours straight on monday nights (no breaks). super tough. can use notes and all your friends tests from previous semesters. highly worth that part if you know people that took class already.
I liked him.
He lets you have open notes and textbooks for the test and quizzes but they are useless, tests re extremely hard. Teaches by Power Point. He's good if you know everything from Acct 1 and 2. I would not recommend him.
worst teacher i've ever had!! got an F. i have a new teacher and i have an A. you figure it out.
Very boring and long winded. I used to imagine Saturday TV Funhouse episodes in his class with Dr. Eastman playing the staring role.
Not exciting, but he's organized. He lays things out in the Powerpoint slides and lets you use old tests. Its not really that hard.
Organized, fair and balanced. He'll challenge you, but not to confuse or belittle you - just to make sure you learn the material. Take the class.
Hard quizzes every week (drop 2; quiz 1st day!). Class average was about 60%, then there's the final curve. I learned A LOT, but also worked quite hard. Cheat sheets for each test, 3 sheets for final (cum.). I learned the true value of a financial planner.
He is one of the worst profs I've ever had. He read powerpoints for the first part of the class then when everyone failed the first test he decided he should TRY to teach the class, but his teaching didn't help either. His tests are impossible, even with cheat sheets. On the bright side, he curves.
he actually teaches the class. his voice is very dry and can be a boring lecture from time to time but he is fair and offers a lot of help

highest class average on a test was 67. went too fast. didnt explain much. very boring. gets defensive when you ask a question. avoid at all costs!
Very poor teacher! Did power point, had no clue to what he was talking about. Class average on the first test was about a 45%. I got an F....My first F ever! Do not take him!
I had him twice and dispite that fact he is not a bad teacher. However, he is next to impossible to pay attention to (i.e IUP's Ben Stein). He's a nice guy and if your into asking for help he will definately help you out. I would not recommend but the rest of the teachers for this class are no better :(
reads off of the powerpoint slides to teach...do not recommend him at all. very hard tests!
Good lectures, good clarity, tests are somewhat easy, and great pre-exam reviews. He gives great partial credit as well on tougher exam questions. I would him take again.
Slightly boring, I'd say take him for 60 rather than 90 minutes. He's very easy if you attend class and have a brain. The tests are reflective of what he teaches. He will make you think a bit, but it's a good course. I recommend him.
I took him for two classes. He's not easy but very fair. He goes out of his way to help the students and seems like a really nice guy.
He is a bit boring but it is finance. Very helpful, on his tests he is more concerned that you know what you are doing. Even if you got the wrong answer he will look at your work and give you points if you did something right. He doesn't rush the material and gives alot of in class problems, and he helps you solve them. Take him for finance 310.
this guy is a horrible teacher....he doesnt give enough time to complete any of his tests
Go to class and pay attention. He covers everything that will be on the tests but you have to be in class to get the right notes so if you don't like attending class then don't recomend him but I liked him.
Ive heard every teacher is bad but this guy is awful I usually go to every class but this guy it doesnt even matter, gets defensive when you ask questions, and doesnt cover what will be on the test. I have talked to the dean about it but nothing, supposedly grades on a curve but i would too if everyone failed DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS
Its finance he tries to make it as painless as possible but finance is just that boring. Also as long as you go to class and pay attention you will see everything he puts on the board again, like on the tests. Homework is online so you can do it as you go or you can wait till the end and do it all but it is more helpful to do it as you go.
I'm a finance major. I'm taking this class in the summer and he changed his teaching so that you take your first test online. No partial credit for wrong answers. He's mono-tone, shows little interest, and grades hard. I never miss class, so if you have him, good luck...
Very hard to pay attention in class. He recommends doing the online homework but never ever has a question like the homework on the test. Finance is hard enough but he doesn't make it any easier. We're just college students with low attention spans, so just teach us what is going to be on the test so we can get a good grade. Very nice guy though.
welcome to hell if you take this lecture
I've heard alot of people complain about Eastman but he's really not bad at all. He shows you how to do everything step by step and has open note/open book tests. The only downside to Eastman is the MyFinanceLab homework which takes, no lie, about 12 hours (total) to complete.
I actually like Dr. Eastman a lot. He definitely tries to make finance as easy as possible. He does a lot of examples and even gives us practice tests that we are allowed to use during our chapter tests. He lets us use all of our notes as well. He gives 5 or 6 tests instead of 3 huge ones, so if you screw up one, you'll still have a shot at an A/B.
I really liked this class and it made me want to work in Finance. He gives tests after almost every chapter. That might seem like a bad thing, but with the dense material you are learning, it helps to be teached on it frequently. Read the book, do the online homework, and def go to class!! He explains alot in class. He is helpful too.
Took Eastman for Corporate Finance (320) online in the summer in order to avoid Welker. You have 5 weeks to get through 18 or so chapters. A lot of work and it's completely on your own but very straightforward. He always answered any question I had in email within 24 hours. Good professor and very helpful. If you take this online, be ready to work.
Ok HANDS DOWN, he is a HORRIBLE professor. I am a consistent a/b student, but currently have a 53% in this class. He will give you very simple homework questions, but on the test, the problems are freaking impossible. Says he feels "puzzled" when nearly everyone misses a question on the test, but won't admit that it's because he never taught us.
wow, i don't even know where to begin with this guy. his online homework assignments are annoying, and take HOURS to complete. He lets you use your book and notes on tests, but they contain concepts you have never seen in your life. And you will think you did OK on an exam, but you will get it back and be dissapointed, cuz he tries to trick you.
you better be a finance genious if you want to do good in this class. lets you use notes and book on tests but it doesnt help because half of them are problems he doesnt teach in class and are nothing like the online homework. i heard hes the best one to take though for this course. good luck.
i don't know what to say about this guy...he's really nice but boring, and the tests have information you have never seen in your life.. rumor has it he curves tho so i guess it's ok, unfortunately ive heard that he's the best one to take.
Ok he's a very nice guy but his class is ridiculously hard. He doesn't teach you what he puts on the exams. He teaches you a form of it but not what your tested on & even though it's open book & open notes it doesn't help you because the exam questions aren't anything like the examples he gives you in class. Avoid him if your not a finance major.
i would study for hours upon hours for his tests and end up doing horrible. he puts stuff on the exams that are nothing like the homework or inclass work. he also puts way too many problems on exams and doesnt give you enough time to finish them all. good luck getting a decent grade if you take him.
Dr. Eastman is boring and reads off of the powerpoints provided by the book. Gives decent examples in class that are useless because he asks you for different things on the tests. Studied for HOURS to no avail. DO NOT TAKE IF POSSIBLE. Gives a multiple choice final after open ended exams all year.. terrible class and a terrible teacher.
I don't know why people judge him a lot, he is a quiet nice professor. he teaches clearly though hard because of 6 exams and so many homeworks.but he looks like upset theses days
God bless your GPA if you take him. I WAS a consistent a/b accounting student, that is until I got a D in this class. tests contain info you have never seen in your life. AND, the first 2 chapters covered accting material I knew hands down. I had to go back an relearn everything in the absurd way he taught it. Absolute and complete bs
OMG! By far the HARDEST class I have taken! Exam ?s were no where to be found in notes or book!!! Don't take for online course- there's no way to teach yourself this class!!! Listen to the postings- this is a gpa killer!!!
Good professor. Took the online class which consisted of only quizzes and exams. Open notes/book for it all. Responds back to emails quickly. Definitely the best way to take finance without hurting your gpa definitely recommend!!
looks kind. BUT...his lecture is boring. learn nothing via class. you have to read a lot after class. no extra exercise before class, you have no idea about test. open book test and you cannot find answers on book, how rediculous..
Class didn't seem like it was going to be to bad in the beginning. But quickly learned it was the hardest class I've had yet. I was looking to minor in accounting but, after having him I'm definitely not. Lectures are horrible just goes over ppt you can look at on your own from home. Doesn't teach, explanations are terrible. Overall don't take him.
By far the worst teacher at IUP. Online HW takes forever and the HW problems are not even like the ones on the test. TAKE SOMEONE ELSE!
Don't recommend. Moves very quickly, myfinancelab hw is not the same as exam questions, book only used for open notes aspect of exams. Exams are too long for the time period, and if you don't have a financial calculator, they are very hard to finish. Seemed like there should have been a lower-level finance class.
You earn your respected grade. Very approachable teacher however you must attend all classes and listen carefully in order to obtain all the notes. Exams are difficult and test your knowledge of the subject. Overall, I had a good experience with him and would advise students to take him if there are eager and willing to learn.
He is monotone and the class is pretty boring. As long as you study before the exams, the are not super hard. The homework and quizzes are simple. Easy A or B
So, I showed up the first day and learned that I would not be learning anything from this guy. He is nice, willing to help with the homework, lectures are usually not very helpful though. I usually just learn by trial and error through the homework. I would not recommend. Take econ 143 instead.
Very monotone, constantly talks about his personal life. He's a very nice guy. Tests were open book and you could use a sheet of notes, but the problems were very math oriented and I had to teach myself formulas he did not go over. Read the book good, and you should be okay. The case projects are extremely hard, though. 100 points each.
Dr. Eastman is not very interesting in class. He uses the slideshow provided by the textbook. He mostly talks about his own personal financial wellness. If you are looking to actually learn about your own financial wellness, do not take him. Otherwise, his class isn't too bad if you already understand the basics of finance.
Save yourself the trouble, Worse professor, Hard, doesnt teach, homework does not help with test, he gives you old exams but doesnt go over how to do them. Find another teacher better yet take it at a community college.
Didn't teach anything, the slideshows he used in class were online which made class pointless because he would usually just confuse me more. The case studies were brutally long and hard, but could be found online. The exams were tough to complete in the time period, but were open notes. Final exam was made straight from questions on old exams
If I could even stress to you how stupid this class made me feel. I was overwhelmed and embarrassed the whole time I took this class. Worst I've ever had. Doesn't teach. Doesn't care. Boring. HARD HARD exams. Cant learn even if you tried your hardest. Education shouldn't be like this. DONT TAKE UNLESS YOU LIVE BY LIFE IS HARD MOTTO I GUESS.
My first college F! :( DONT TAKE... and no its not because I didn't work hard enough. I tried my best I really did. The teaching of this class is horrible. You can tell he lectured finance all his life over and over and over again and we are just an added over to list each semester.
Very boring and gives a lot of homework however it is not related to what is on the test. Average test grade for the class is 50% or less. Lectures are PowerPoint slides made by the book. Eastman is very lazy and shows no interest in the subject or his students. I don't usually complain but this man is terrible. Take another professor if possible.
He's terrible, do not take him, even if he is the last prof left. Acts like this is everyone's top priority. Homework and study materials barely relate to his nearly impossible exams, nor does going to class help. He obviously prides himself on his unnecessarily difficult class. Direct example of why education is so flawed.
He's very monotone and doesn't engage the class so it's very boring I would NOT recommend this class. He doesn't help at all and the tests are hard. He doesn't seem to care about the class or anyone in it, as well as anything that he is teaching.
AVOID AT ALL COSTS. Dr. Eastman is the worst teacher I've had at IUP. He has the most monotone voice and it's hard to stay awake during class. His tests are ridiculously hard and you can barely finish in the allotted time. Most of the class averages on the tests were an F. Please don't take him if you enjoy your sanity.
I would not recommend this professor to anyone. His lectures are monotone and he does not cover enough of the material in class. Even when asking for help he is short to the point and does not like explaining things. His exams are very difficult to finish on time and the class averages are always below 60 percent. Stay Away.
Dr. Eastman is VERY smart and knows what he is talking about. But if you're not good at finance, you're going to have to work your butt off. His lectures usually put me to sleep. Attendance isn't mandatory but I do not recommend missing class--you'll miss a lot. The exams are very tough but he tries to give you as much credit as possible.
To start off, I took this class only because I was required too. I dreaded going to this class. He never showed up on time, he was very monotone and has extremely long lectures, and he pretty much took everything from the book and just copied it to a power point. Only perk was he let us use our books on our tests. Take something else if you can.
The laziest professor ever !! The classes are too darn easy and he continues to feed the same exams from prior years. Expect to learn nothing much from his classes.
I have had straight A's all through college until this class. His tests are unreal, and his lectures are terrible. Everyone says Lawson is much better. I've been miserable this entire semester over this class. He doesn't help students at all. Tenure must be amazing with this guy.
After struggling and failing almost ALL his exams, and studying with a tutor most nights, I had come to the conclusion that I would fail his class. However, i went to talk to him almost every week about my grades and asked for help. He ended up passing me because he took notice in the fact that I was trying my hardest. He notices the people who try
Hardest class I have ever taken in college. The homework online is unbearably long. His lectures are more boring than watching paint dry. His tests are open note and still impossibly hard. Will most likely not finish his tests in time. Any extra credit offered, take it; it is a very easy way to boost test scores.
Does not really teach you how to do the math problems. Very confusing. Online homework is very long and hard to do (bc they are twice as hard as the problems we do in class). His lectures are boring. However, he gives lots of extra credit that goes towards your next test. And if you approach him after class, he'll answer all of your questions.
He reads off of a power point. The book and all of the homework are through myfinancelab. The tests are multiple choice with word problems that aren't like anything he talks about in class. 3 exams. 1 cumulative final. For our third exam he said the avg grade was a 64% and it didn't seem to phase him at all. Seems uninterested in students success.
don't take with him
He will never give you enough time for an exam if your class is 50 minutes. (Most of class was forced to hand in uncompleted exams) They are often longer and you better have studied very hard. Extra credit available online. Lots of homework. Below par teaching ability. (Like way below par) Dry and boring as well. Don't recommend
EASILY worst professor i've had in college. Exams are impossible, lectures will put you to sleep, and he simply doesn't care about how his students do in class. He gave us 2 exams, a 5-10 page research paper, and a cumulative final in the span of ONE week. As if his class was the only one any of us had to worry about. AVOID at all costs
Absolutely horrible. Tests are impossible. Would highly recommend avoiding at all costs.
This is a tough class and subject to begin with so I can see where it could be hard to teach. With that being said, Dr. Eastman is without a doubt one of the worst, laziest, uncaring professors I have ever dealt with. He does not engage students with his teaching, showing up to his classes us pointless. Must be unhappy with something in his life.
overwhelming amount of online homework, very difficult for an entry level finance class. All he does is talk about himself and his families life. Very unclear on when stuff is do and what has to be done and what is counted as extra credit. Do not recommend taking his class!
I have taken his class both in person and online. Both times taking it I was blown away with the difficulty and the level of understanding you need to have in finance to pass this class. I am not a finance major and if I ever have to take another finance class at IUP i will try to transfer the credits in. You either understand finance or you dont.
I really cant believe why this professor would have anything but the highest rating. He responded very fast and his responses were easy to understand. Thoroughly enjoyed this class.
The most dry monotone voice you will ever hear. Which makes a class like Finance even more difficult. I was completely disgusted by his style of teaching and assistance that he doesn't give when you ask for help. It's almost like he doesn't even know what he's teaching because when you ask for an explanation, he tells you to read instead of explain
Never take in class. He just graded by three or four exams which are super tough, one research paper, and very few homework in the whole semester.
All the homework was online and all the tests except for the final was online. Lectures were boring but so is finance. If you understand the hw problems you can do well on tests. No point in reading the chapters since 90% of tests are problems and not definitions
Dr. Eastman is an overall good professor! You have until the end of the semester to complete all the homework assignments, and each chapter has an extra credit quiz to go with it! The homework assignments are long and often harder than the examples we do in class. He is funny and likes to tell stories in class that relate to the topics we learn.
Dr. Eastman's class is extremely difficult to do well as a student. He is unclear on grading, tests are ridiculously hard, and he has no concern for how his students are doing. He fails to discuss the material necessary for tests. His teaching is very dry. The stress he will create in your life is overwhelming and I do not feel that I learned much.
DO NOT TAKE A CLASS WITH HIM!!! very bad teaching, very bad class, you will get a FFFFFFF you will be stressed the entire semester .
When asking for help, do not expect to get any from him, even though you pay for him to teach.
The homework has almost no relation to the exams. If you do not understand accounting or finance you will not do well in his classes.
Don't take the class with Dr. Eastman! Class material is hard and unclear. The exam questions have to do very little with the material explained in class. Don't ask him for extra credit, he will say no. You will stress for the whole semester.
One of the worst teachers I've ever had. Dry lectures, unclear and inconsistent grading, unresponsive to emails and student concerns. Tests are very different from study material and what you go over in class. Tests have a ridiculous amount of short-essay questions, often with multiple parts. You won't get much from this class but a lower GPA.
Do NOT take this class. I am a junior and this 143 level class is the hardest college class Ive taken so far. The homework is insanely hard and the exams are just as bad, if not worse. The homeworks are worth 5 points each, so if you miss 2 questions, you automatically get a 60 on the assignment! My biggest regret in college is taking this class
To put this in the most simplest terms, Alan Eastman is the worst professor I've had at IUP. He has no personality and he is horrible at teaching. His assignments are ridiculous and he grades horribly. I've never failed a class in my life but during this semester I failed both his investments class and insurance and risk management class in one.
If you should avoid anything in life, avoid Alan Eastman. Worst professor at IUP, and you're going to feel like a miserable puppy locked in a cage with bacon outside of it.
if i could rate this man 0 stars i would. he is the worst prof i have ever had. this guy is the biggest joke and his class is the worst waste of time and money. he is extremely tough, the lectures don't correlate with the tests and when he finally decides to respond to your fourth email he is extremely rude. don't take this class even if you have 2
He is not a good teacher. It doesn't matter if you go to lectures and study. The material is simple but you will struggle in this class. He doesn't give you adequate information to prepare for tests/hw and doesn't make his expectations clear. He is hopelessly boring and uninspiring. I could go on. Take anyone else but him.
His lectures aren't all that but you just have to get Pearson then read the chapter and do the homework assignments. He gives extra credit and is chill, you'll pass as long as you keep up with the work and do semi ok on the test. When reading the chapters take note of the equations they give and learn the finance calculator.
The homework has nothing to do with the exams at all. He isn't mean, but that's it. Do not listen to the good ratings. I did. NEVER AGAIN. Never have I felt so dejected and just done. No idea how anyone else passed. I've worked so hard and did well in my other classes, but I'm pretty sure my scholarship will be taken away after his.
Easy grader, straightforward expectations, clear communicator. Just impressively unempathetic. Would not feel comfortable approaching him again which made for a poor experience.
Boring likes to talk about himself and don't seem to understand wean you ask questions
He wasn't the worst professor but he talked more about his family than he taught the class. His class is all online homework which is nice and makes it easy to complete but hard to pay attention to monatone voice for so long.
His lectures are painfully boring and he is very unhelpful. He talks about his personal life the entire class which doesn't help when your grade relies solely on three exams. You'll spend countless hours on homework just for it to barely count toward your grade. Would not recommend him by any means.
I do not know where to start! He teaches Math based finance classes and will not teach a single math problem or even review the math material! He is hard to hear and his exams are outrageously hard and all math. Sitting through lectures is a waste of time and money be prepared to teach yourself math during the exam! Sad he teaches classes you need.
Not only are his lectures boring, hard to follow, and useless, but when you ask him any sort of question, he acts confused and gives a rude, condescending answer. Please do not take him.
i just started college and he is my first class and it takes some strength to show up for that class at 9 am. It's crazy how he just talks and makes you buy a 100 dollar book that teaches you everything. If ur into falling asleep or playing games in class i recommend but if you wanna hear him say so much yet nothing at the same time that's cool ig
Class is pretty easy and exams are online, however the lectures are as boring as they come and are completely useless when it comes time for the assignments and exams.
This class is a struggle, but Unstuck ai can help with study prep. The professor's lectures are dry, and he seems more interested in talking about his personal life than teaching. However, the homework is manageable, and the exams are challenging but fair if you stay on top of the material.
