Emerson is a great math teacher. He makes all this horrible stuff called math a lot easier to digest. He doesn't collect any HW but if you want to pass the class do it anyway. There are 4 tests & 1 final. If you must take Math take Emerson, you won't regret it, he's a very interesting & dynamic guy.

Alan Emerson is such a great teacher that he almost convinced me that I am good in Math. Then, Graves came along and proved me wrong. I wish all teachers were as brilliant, engaging, clear, and kind as Emerson is. He is THE BEST! Believe me! He is a "must take" teacher.

He doesn't follow the book b/c he is more genious than authors who wrote the book & he organize every thing in his brain. 25 years experience, knows what he is doing and doesn't waste time for knucklehead. If you don't understand his strategy, sorry but you are DUMB!

extreamly hard, he is a great teacher for math 31 but math 20 sux. his tests are horrible and its like taking a final exam 5 times in a semester. i do not recommend him unless your good in math, however you do learn a lot from him, just do not expect to get anything higher then a D or C!!!

He is definately fair. This class is tough. 4 Exams + Final. He Knows his stuff. A decent guy and solid instructor, but I will still end up re-taking this class with an easier instructor.

His class was very tough. I took it during Winter session and it was too fast paced for me. Although, I really like him, I thought he made some of the problems too hard. He doesn't collect the homework, but I recommend doing it if you want to pass the class. I don't recommend the six week course unless you plan to dedicate most of your time to it.

Listening to his lectures was like listening to a speaker-box. Lectures seem never-ending; half of the time I was sleeping, eventhough I sat somewhere in the front. He follows chapters in his own ways. Still I got a B in the class; only dummies would fail. Yes, ladies his hot if you are into hundred year old guys who drink on the job.

This has to be one of the best math teachers I've ever had. He's clear, got a great sense of humor, always answers your questions. He goes over the homework with you (its not even assigned!), and he has practice test worksheets. Definetly a good choice and will make look forward to class with him.

He is great. It's not really an easy class, but I never do homework I still get at least B for sure. I'm taking his class now. Just try to do and understand whatever in a practice test that tell you the way to go on the exam. no need to do hw I never do and don't ever open a textbook.

He is a very helpful teacher, doesn't assign homework, but it will help if you do it. His practiice test/worksheets were really helpful because thats what will be on the test. He is lectures real well and isnt boring. I highly recommend him.

Really interesting I never understand math before until I have studied in his class. I got an A with math comprehension. I'm looking forward to seeing him again in MATH 2

Very nice, generous teacher. No homework, but little tricky test.

He has fun teaching and makes jokes. The class is an upper division math. This is the hardest class offered in SMC. He is very helpful but sometimes goes too fast. Only has 3 tests which none get dropped. If you're good at Math 13 then you'll do well in his class. His tests are very hard you need to spend at least 8 hours for every hour in class

Most important: He only grades on tests, so if you tend to bomb tests, I wouldn't reccommend his class. However he's a good professor, dry, dry humor and you need to have a strong sense of self to deal with him. I think he's great, but I can see why others may not like him. He doesn't follow the book, but I think it makes more sense.

Great Prof! steady paced teaching. does a lot of practice with the class before a quiz which is very helpful. gives out a pre-test questionnaire which most likely will come out in the quiz.i just studied his examples (notes) and did not even open my book. got an A

This guy is great. I advise you go to class, take notes, do some of the recommended (never assigned) homework. He gives practice exams (if you study that, you'll be fine on the exam) he goes over "homework" and the practice test usually the two days before any exam. He's funny, open to questions, and clear! 4 Exams, 1 midterm, 1 Final.

OMG! i loved him. He's blunt and to the point. Goes over the material once and that's it. NO HMWK! First time in my life i ever got an A in a math class, and actually understood the subject. If you're the type of student that needs more than bare bones from a teacher he's not for you. But if you want wham bam thank you ma'am, he's your man.

As long as you do pay attention to his lecutures and take detailed notes, you should have no problem passing this class. Excellent instructor. Made something I thought would be difficult into a class I enjoyed. Do the homework also, even though he doesn't collect it. It will help.

Took his math 31 class in spring. verry good teacher. very clear and helpful. i recommend him a lot. got a B out of his class. took his math 20 class cr/nc. and i took it during the winter. doesn't give out HW. very east passed his class... ppl should take him. i recommend him A lot.

Overall great teacher, pay attention and do the recomended HW!Prepare good questions and he'll answer them through and through. Seems tough at first but hes a nice guy that wants people to learn and do well.Explains concepts really well and makes it seem so easy that you dont want to do HW but then he expects you to know it so the tests are Hard!

He's the best teacher at SMC. He explains everything so clearly and goes above and beyond whats expected of a teacher. He's passionate about his work and wants his students to understand why certain procedures are taken to solve problems, not just because he told you so. Its not an easy class.

Excellent Professor. He Teaches the material perfectly and is very understandable. Homework is not collected. He goes over homework problems that anyone has questions on. There were four tests and a final exam in this class. I aced them all. I got an easy A+. Ignore the bad comments because they are lies. Take him!

Great professor, assigns hw but NEVER collects them, goes over the hw, ask questions if u have one, DON"T BE SHY!! Difficulty of the tests is mediocre, but if you actually do ALL the hw's correctly and study, you'll do fine and possibly get an A. I got an A.

If the subject is hard for you, the class is not easy but Alan is helpful in explaining things clearly as many times as anyone needs. It's your responsibility to study your notes and do math from the book.

He really is a good professor. He basically lets you assign your own homework which is good because you do what you know you need practice on. He lectures are clear, and if you have a question just go ahead and ask and he will answer it.

No homework. No quizzes. 4 Tests and final.He gave out practice tests that were exactly the same as actual tests, but with different numbers.If you were able to do the practice test, you would do great on his tests. He is always willing to answer any questions you have in class.

I took Mr.Emerson a long time ago but he is one of those teachers that changed my perception of the world. He is so smart, careful and interesting. When reviewing the lecture notes I was shocked at his level of clarity and flow. I think the guy is a genius, I'll never forget him.

By god if you want to get an easy A take Mr. Allan. He is a hip white guy lol strongly recommend him!

I'm currently taking his class right now, and I already knew the material, but he explains it so well that i've learned so much more then i had already known. He uses tough vocabulary when the lecture could be explained a couple of simple words, but it really does emphasize what he's getting to. He's a great professor, and is very smart

Well... even though there is no homework at all, but he will go over examples after examples... and he is a good listener and patient teacher. Please study your notes right after class. And study all the notes then try to do as much homework as possible. Therefore, you will be ready for his test. His final is very fair. He is extremely helpful.

bottom line: any math 2 class you're going to have to work in. he doesn't give h.w., but DO IT. it's a great class for students that are responsible, and he's always there to help if you need it. in fact, he pushed back the tests multiple times b/c we weren't ready. yes, it's tough, but check out any other math 2 class, and you'll c the same thing

Freedom of choice of homework coupled with interesting lectures of crystal clarity!!! Test are tricky but are usually similar to questions he went through in class. The bad: HW not collected & no quizzes. U don't know how he tests/grades until after 1st test, which stinks. Tests can b really LONG. The good: Tests r fair(but long). He knows how 2 teach & class is enjoyable. He enjoys teaching. Takes time to explain in/out of class. If ur not obnoxous & make a good case, u can sometimes get points back on tests.

Mr.Amerson is a great professor, he cares about his students..He breaks each formula down to simplicity. Homework is optional, but I suggest you do it to polish on your math. He also gives you sample test to practice before an exam.

Emerson is a great teacher. He will try his best to make you understand the material that's very hard. During winter he didn't have office hours. Taking this course in a 6 week time span is very hard and time consuming. A counselor will tell you not to take this in a short time period. Overall, great/caring teacher, but very hard subject.

He's a nice guy; expectionally funny w/ his dyslexic moments & "healthy in a paranoid ways" I got a killer laugh from being in that class. He gives the appearance of laziness but his a genius. I call him the jolly chalk man. I barely ended up with a low B. Pre-calc is extremely complex & tricky!! Be prepared to study! There's no mercy whatsoever!!!

Amazing teacher. He teaches the material well, very organized, energetic, and thorough.He is Everything you want in a teacher. Yet the material is HARD. Definitely not recommended for short semesters. You will like his class because he is passionate about what he's teaching and is willing to take the extra mile to help you if you want to be helped.

He is an excellent teacher that really focuses on going slow and going over all the material. 3 test's and final. test's are straight forward tough grader which bothered me. He's a good teacher but precalc is a HARD subject so if you don't study you will fail. I worked my butt off and i got a high C. I would definitely retake his class.

Professor Emerson teaches with such clarity that he makes pre-calc seem simple. Although the material is difficult, he gives you the tools to succeed. He is extremely laid back and makes the subject interesting. Highly recommended just study your notes and do the HW,although not required, it's necessary to do well.

best techer, seriously, he knows what he is doing and never really frezes on a problem he is like einstein. He also keeps the class quiet so everyone can focus you do not have to worry about people distracting.

Emerson was such a clear instructor. There is no hw which is amazing. However the tests can be a ****. not just basic concept questions but a good amount require some thinking. Soo hard to pull an A since the class is out of 3 tests and the final. The final was definitely the easiest of the tests.

(Math 8) It was hard. I worked my ass off, but I got an A. You definitely earn your grade, but this IS calculus, and you're expected to know your****. So get in that library and start doing all the HW he assigns if you want to get a decent grade. He grades fair and has informative lectures (which I recommend paying close attention to)

Ok, some people say that he is real bad or is gonna ruin your life.Dont trust them.He is really nice person. His exams are straightforward from your assignments and examples discussed in the class. When you are taking his exam, BE SPECIFIC and try to justify your answers. Make sure that you didn't miss "C" for indefinite integrals, equal signs,etc.

Mr. Emerson is a great teacher and his passion for math shows. His lectures are clear and he answers any question in detail. Only issue I had with him was that he was a little boring... Dozed off a bit too many! Also, his tests are difficult. Homework is optional, but you should still do it; it'll help a lot. Recommended!

This class is broken down in the following way: 4 exams worth a combned 75 percent of your grade, final exam worth 25 percent of your grade and homework is optional. However, the key to this class is the homework. Professor Emerson likes to take the harder homework problems, change the numbers and put them on the exam. Not terribly difficult. GL!!!

The class is fun and for the most part engaging. Do all the homework and listen and participate in class, and the exams will be straightforward. Three exams and a final. Homework isn't collected, but it is absolutely necessary. Recommended.

Probably the best math teacher I've ever had, honestly.. Very helpful, makes sure you understand all the material and goes over a lot of problems with the class. He teaches in a way that's easy to understand, which makes it easier to study and do well.. I never even bought a book, I just went off my notes. Cool guy, I would highly recommend him.

Great teacher!!! explains every proofs step by step clearly. You just have to listen to him WORD BY WORD!! Professor Emerson is great teacher and makes math 2 very interesting as well as easy. He is crystal clear in his lectures and wants all his students to succeed by going out of his way to give students practice tests identical to his test with different numbers. To succeed in this class stay on top of your work as well as try to ace first test!

The only A I have ever gotten in a math class was in his class. I am NOT a math person but I listened, paid attention, and with the way he explained things, it all made sense to me for the first time in my life.

Prof. Emerson is actually a very good teacher. Most ppl in our class agreed with that. He gives out practice test that are great. Those things saved me. No HW is collected. Your grade is based off of all the tests. I would definitely recommend this guy to everyone, esp. for those taking higher math levels, like Math2 and above

Prof Emerson knows his stuff and teaches PrecalculusTrig very well. The class was organized perfectly, and his lectures were clear as can be. He always answered questions, and doesn't collect homework but expects you to do it. He's a good guy, definitely one of the better math professors at SMC. All exams were fair and reasonably graded.

Honestly, his class is not an easy class, and hard to expect an A grade. As long as you meet a tutor at least once a week, probably, you guys can get an A grade. Professor Emerson is one of the best Math professors I have had at smc he hands out practice exams that really help you study for his exam's. All his tests were fair game no surprise questions. In order to do well in his class do the homework in the book even though it isn't collected it will guarantee you a B or better in his class.

I couldn't find a good professor that taught math with clarity , until I came across professor Emerson! He was incredibly amazing. You just have to study a lot. You really have to work for your grade, but if you do your hw and show that you care this class will be just fine. His grading is very fair in my opinion, also don't fear this class if you don't understand the proofs, as you won't be tested on the hard ones. GL!

Gives great lectures. Informative. He makes it very clear what is gonna be on the test and exactly what you should do on the test. Engages with the class and has a good stage presence. Really knows the material. If I could, I would take his class again. Make sure you do the homework.

Professor Emerson is by far the best math professor I ever had at SMC, really helps students when they don't understand the problems. Just don't speak when he's teaching because it is one of his pet peeves other than that best math professor ever, if he were to teach every math course I would keep taking him.

I like professor Emerson very much, including the way he teaches us as well. I am pretty sure that every question in his lecture has his purposeso it is no problem to get a good grade if you understand every question he talk about and the questions on your sample exam papers.

Emerson is a great teacher, he won't take the short route and gives you the tough questions so you are prepared to be able to handle any sort of problem that he may put on the test. Practice exams are given a week in advance. Don't skip class, he gives alternative methods that aren't in the book for solving questions that makes the class easier.

what an absolute g. some people didn't like his teaching style but I found him absolutely hilarious, informative and actually caring. just don't ask questions that he JUST explained like a dingus head! do all the practice tests 3 times, and complete all the homework and you should be fine. 10/10 teacher, felt like he was a mentor and believed in me

I loved this professor. The people who failed the class is the ones who didn't do any work. As long as you do practice problems at home, you will get a A. Even though he only grades on tests, he gives you old exams for a study guide, so you know whats exactly on the test. I took this course during the winter and passed with a A.

I took Emerson for the fall semester once a week for four hours. Granted his courses were FOUR HOURS LONG, his lectures are straight forward and often wrote notes to explain his steps to an answer. Personally I learn more by verbal communication so I found this course very easy. The course consists of tests, midterm and final. It helps to study.

Math is my worst subject and Professor Emerson really made it easier for me. He explains things step by step to give you the full picture. Before the exams he hands out old exams to practice on, which most of the practice problems are similar to the actual exam, no hw , just practice exams to work on, 4 exams and 1 final. Genuinely nice person. Sometimes forgets that you don't also have a doctorates in math. His lectures can be quite confusing. That said, if you take his class and learn from sources such as Professor Leonard an A is possible. His exams are reasonable and so is his grading, Studyguides are incredibly helpful. That said, hardest A I've ever earned.

He doesn't grade homework but do the problems at the end of the chapter for practice anyway. Goes a little slow in lecture and somewhat disorganized with class management but a super nice and approachable man. He genuinely cares. Tests are pretty tough so you have to go fast to finish. If you put in the work ahead of time you'll be ok.

I took math 20 online. he explains really well and is v chill w everything. i would definitely take his classes in the future. loved his online class

Emerson is one of the kindest/chillest professors I've ever had. ONLY take his class if you're ready to self-structure; he's more old school so online is not his forte, but he KNOWS what he's teaching and is very sweet. I "don't speak" the language of math, but through his lectures and Michelle (SI leader) I got an A and actually enjoyed math!!

If you plan on taking this course, be prepared to use your head. I didn't take a math course for 10 years and with him I got an A. He explains things with a concise logic (he may over do it with the vocabulary).The exams are really clear and if you actually work on the practice exams you will pass with ease. only downside, he is a bit disorganized

I had Professor Emerson for my first SMC semester and surprisingly it went well. He is an old fashioned teacher. He'll required, for an online class, to have two cameras on for exams but once he trusts you and sees that you work hard and try, he'll be supportive. You just cannot fake the work with this teacher. He is a slow grader though.

Excellent prof. Explains concepts in a way anyone can understand. If you expect to be baby-fed homework assignments, take someone else. Math 2 is a review course; there is little to no homework (since you'll know entire chapters at times) and you will have to self-study what you don't know. Negative reviews are from people who never got that memo.

Emerson is a no non-sense professor who values effort. He uses early scare tactics to weed out non-serious students. His lectures can be dull, but he gives a practice test before each exam. Complete it 2-3 times and you should be able to get an A, as he grades on a curve. He values hard work, and the workload is lighter compared to other teachers.

He taught very well and explained the concepts clearly. My grade reflects the fact that I made a lot of simple mistakes during the exams (oops) and I should have spent more time reviewing and checked out tutoring. Overall, it was a great class, and I learned a lot that I will be applying to Math 7! A great professor!
