Great Teacher, Very Interesting Class, and Easy Tests!!
He makes learning about Chinese culture interesting. Very Enthusiastic!
Easy course, easy tests. A must take!!!
He is very excited about what he teaches! The tests were a little difficult.
He loves his work!! The class is interesting, although the tests are very hard.
Very helpful and good teacher just don't miss a class. Looks like Detroit Tiger great Alan Trammell.
Very interesting, tests are not bad if you take good notes
Great professor. Lectures are interesting!
Great Prof...has his dull moments, but overall very interesting and knows his stuff!!!
So much fun. He's really smart, loves his work, tells good stories, its great. Tests aren't too bad, but you have to take a lot of good notes.
Maybe the smartest guy I've ever talked to. He's pretty far left--almost falling off the charts--but he welcomes alternative opinions and is very informative to debate with. One of the best prof's at OU.
Tough course, but if you attend and take notes, keep up w/ reading you'll do fine. Lectures can be boring. Not a very animated speaker. Overall, the course is pretty interesting.
Great prof. and person, very interesting course, but tests are a little on the tough side. make sure to go to class and take good notes and study them!!
Very knowledgeable professor, friendly, fair, and very approachable. lectures are very interesting and thought provoking just be prepared to take a decent amount of notes, would recommend to anybody
Oh my word, he is one of those profs that are few and far between. i respect him so much. he made me want to try hard. his tests are tough, but they're from the notes he gives so just study. he is such a kind person and so genuine. he's funny too!
This has been by far the best proff I've ever had in my college career. I took 2 classes with him, and was upset when class was over. He is one stand up guy.
great teacher
Very good teacher, he knows his stuff!! Long lectures, but you can tell he loves teaching.
This is not a blow off class. You have to spend time studying the material or you will not do that well. That being said he is one of the best professors, constantly encourages questions and does not test on material he doesn't cover.
He is a awesome professor. If you don't understand what is going on in the class he will help you out alot. I recommend everyone to take him.. Great Professor
Great professor!! Makes learning about the Chinese history and culture very interesting. Although, you have to show up to class to take notes, so you will do well on the tests. Only thing hard about this class is trying to seperate all the Chinese names.
You MUST attend class in order to do well. Notes are extensive and lectures a little disorganized. Other than that, he gives multiple choice tests that are very basic and only cover what was in the notes. Show up, take notes. Easy. Nice and helpful guy!!
He is very into what is he is teaching and you can tell he knows a lot about the topics we discuss. A lot of info is covered and you have to take a lot of notes but he is so helpful that what we do is not that hard to understand.
great professor. He is very intelligent but not arrogant and is willing to help everyone out. Grades very fairly as long as you make an effort.
He is the one of the most understanding teachers! He really wants you to pass his class and with a good grade! As long as you attend lectures you will be fine for the tests. Only a little reading but overall he explains everything you need to know!
you have to pay attention and study for the test, but epstein is a great guy and will help you if you ever need it.
One of the very best.
Very nice guy, always willing to help. Greatest I've had so far @ OU.
The BEST professor at OU. He is so nice and an extremly fair grader as long as you put forth the effort. He also wears really cute sweaters to class.
He is a very good teacher, but he also expects you to be a very good student. If you take Epstein be prepared to write--a lot. You have to really understand the subject to do well, but he is always willing to help. Expect an occasional liberal rant.
excellent Prof. understanding, fair and respectful of students
Excellent teacher even if he is a EXTREME lefty. I have never met a person with so much readily available knowledge in his head. Jeez. Great guy, great teacher. Sign up if you can.
Great Prof. One of the very best. He is very helpful, and has a lot of knowledge about the subject. You will enjoy his class a lot. You don't even have to be a PS major to understand him. He is awesome.
good if u have the tests and quizzes from previous years but we most of the class recieved 0.0 on the midterm cuz it was impossible. i would recommend going to class evry day if u want to succeed
I love him!
Awesome Guy....just get a copy of his old tests...he doesnt change them ;)
Very, Very thourough professor. Nice guy just to sit and talk with, and very knowladgeable. I would recommend him to anything, although inherently liberal.
The man likes to go in tangents about his subject but he knows his stuff. In this class, no tests, just papers. I think its worth taking it with him.
My favorite professor of all time. He is the most knowledgable professor I have had throughout my college career.
By far, OU's best professor. Excellent lectures, super friendly and helpful. Fair grader, really wants you to do well. Very approachable. If you go to class and take good notes, you can get away with not reading the text but DO read other assigned books.
By far, OU's best professor. Excellent lectures, super friendly and helpful. Fair grader, really wants you to do well. Very approachable. If you go to class and take good notes, you can get away with not reading the text but DO read other assigned books.
So far the best professor I've had at OU. The man knows everything! You cannot stump him. His lectures are very organized and easy to follow. This is my major...so whenever I can I'm going to take his classes.
Brilliant Professor. Smarter than anybody should be allowed by law. He is bold in his convictions and doesn't take no guff. Be warned that he is a pretty rabid liberal and you can make him steam rather easily especially if you start quoting Rush Limbaugh. I recommend doing this.
awesome guy, totally recommend taking this professor, he's awesome
GREAT Professor. Tests aren't that bad as long as you take good notes and go to class. He has a good sense of humor and knows his stuff!
He is a very helpful teacher. The material is not as easy as you think but he will guide you in the class. Make sure you come to him with questions about everything you don't understand. Their are test and also a paper. I recommend that you take this class
He is a good prof. Their are alot of notes but he is very approachable. He can ask him anything you want. Take this class!
Dude is smart.. His lectures are very intersting. Take his class.
very easy. interesting lectures, i never missed one. knows his stuff and keeps it interesting. very funny guy also. exams were multiple choice with short answers. ahd to read novel and do paper. novel was pretty good. very easy if go to class and take notes. highly recomended
I actually found this class VERY challenging. Tests cover CRAZY amounts of information. I studied like crazy for all tests and still recieved a 1.0 in the class. But he's a nice guy and apololgized to me when I did poorly on his exams.
I loved hearing about China from his experiences, esp. the rice paddies;) Also learned correct pronunciation of Chinese words. My Chinese students are amazed when I am able to say their names!
Very rude guy if you don't agree with him. He loves China so much because he's a Communist and doesn't think there's anything wrong with that form of government. Doesn't allow any opinions but his own.
Definitely among the best professors that I've had at Oakland. Makes difficult material understandable and is extremely engaging.
The essays that you do for the media research are kind of confusing, but once you do one, you'll get the hang of it. Tests are multiple choice with one essay. If you go to class you'll do well. I really liked the professor, entertaining and knows his stuff. Take this class with him.
This class wasn't bad. It's a lot of information but he lectures more with stories than with just facts. Go to class, lots of notes, but you usually just retain information by being there. The exams get harder as the year goes on, so study, but I still did well. He'll go out of his way to help.
I loveed this class! I only got a 2.1, but it was such a fun class. He was so nice and helpful, but if u don't have the tests from the years before...good luck!
Very knowledable about the subject matter. However, expected a little too much for a 100 level class. I've taken 300 level classes which were way easier. Be prepared for a lot of notes.
GREAT teacher, best prof. at OU i've had thus far. Lots of notes, but very interesting lectures. Dont miss one or you are screwed. my only complaint is that he doesnt teach enough classes at OU.
Smarter than anybody. Period. Its very easy to get lost in his lectures. However, he will go out of his way to help you understand the stuff. Youjust have to ask. I wouldn't recommend supporting capitalism in this class. I did so once and was put down faster than a bar of soap at a Phish concert. He is a lot of fun though.
THIS CLASS IS NOW SWITCHING FROM AN INTRO 300 TO A HARDER 300LEVEL CLASS BUT HE TEACHES IT LIKE IT'S ALREADY SWITCHED OVER. PROF. EPSTEIN IS PAINFULLY SMART, I LIKED HIM VERY MUCH BUT I DID NOT THINK IT WAS AS EASY AS I WAS TOLD IT WOULD BE. VERY INSIGHTFUL AND GLAD I TOOK IT, BUT IT IS DEFINATLY NOT A BLOW OFF HIS GUY KNOWS HIS STUFF!
BEST PROFESSOR I've had! Has an abundant amount of knowledge on China and very nice/cares about students. Willing to assist you with whatever you need. BE PREPARED to take A LOT OF NOTES. I actually teamed up w/ another classmate, compared study notes, & passed class. DON'T MISS CLASS and STUDY! (4) tests-multiple choice/essay, & (1) book w/ paper
He is one of my favortie professors at Okland. He is adorable and has a passion for the subjects he teaches. He is helpful, fair, and a very interesting man. I would recommend professor Epstein to all students. Take the class!
I am in love with this man's brain. I only recieved a 2.6 in his class, but I know the fault was mine, not his grading (which can be a little tough). He really, really wants you to take the time to understand how YOU feel about a topic and THEN write the
Love this guy. He's totally sweet and totally fair. He loves the Christian Science Monitor and might be a socialist but he's great - highly reccomend him!!!
i do not like him. WAY TOO MUCH WRITING and his tests were hard. his voice is annoying.
This class is great but only if your seriously into learning about China, and not just China today... he goes way back into the dynastys. Only take this class if you will always attend, always take GOOD notes and realy have a intrest in china and want to dedicate A LOT of your time to studying it. P.S- the tests are NOT easy!
HE TALKS TOO FAST, HE USES HARD WORDS, TOO MUCH NOTES, HIS TESTS ARE HARD. he's not hot at all, what the heck is everyone talking about? AVOID THIS TEACHER. he is insane and should not be teaching an intro class.
This man is brilliant. Seriously, you wouldnt believethe amount of information this guy has in his head. He is willing to help ou if you need it all you have to do is ask, I did and i raise my test scores from 1.7 to 3.7. If you truly want to learn make sure Professor Epstein is teaching the class.
Professor Epstein is an excellent prof. The class is interesting. Those who have given him bad ratings, probably don't want to study. The work load is not bad. The tests are not that horrid. Take really good notes, and study from them! His lectures are very intresting. If you can, take a class with Epstein.
You know what? The people who gave him high praises are only hyping you up for failure. He's cool, I give him that. It's hard to keep up with the lectures cause you get bored easily (by them) and the test are a whole different story. I was interested in learning about China but all that changed after the first session. Sign up if you dare. . .
The material is very interesting. His class is extremely difficult. His tests are very hard expecting you to know every small detail. This is frustrating because his lectures cover ground so quickly your hand can't keep up with his mouth! 4 exams and 1 paper on a novel. Very difficult for a gen.ed. Very nice prof. even funny, but very hard.
A lot of material is covered in the class-from prehistoric China to the present, so be prepared. The prof is intelligent and uses elevated language. Exams are not too tricky, but each covers a lot(4 exams and a paper). If you go to the lectures and take good notes, you don't need to read the text. I recommend this prof for responsible students.
Mr. Epstein was an awesome teacher... yea he talks a lot in one class and he talks VERY fast... deal with it get a computer. He was VERY helpful he makes time for you before and after class and if you needed help studying for the class he was always there for you. i def. recomend him if you really want to learn somethinga bout the histroy of CHINA
Excellent prof! Well enunciated and very clear; GO TO CLASS. I didn't most of the time, despite the 3.6 I got, but I found it a pain in the butt to do all the reading when most of it isn't covered anyway. Three short-essays, three exams (including final). Period. TAKE THIS GENIUS!
Covers a ton of material, tests are multiple choice but can be very in depth and tricky. Overall Mr. Epstein moves pretty fast during lectures but he isn't too boring, he keeps things light and he is pretty funny. Overall a good class, but attendance is a must if you want to pass.
His grading is terrible, He grade very hard! U miss some days & ur screwed. U don't attend much & he gets furious with U & will down grade you. I hated him & will never take him again!
whomever likes this guy is insane! u write 30 page papers and he'll give u a D, not a fair grader at all. very tough and thinks he knows everything. stay away!
He likes to preach and embarrass students in class!!!!
It sounds like the same bitter student posting bad comments over and over again. If you are a slacker and want a class like many at Oakland where you can slip by without doing any work don't take him. If you want the most out of your college experience and want a challange and to learn how to think critically and analyze--there's no one better.
This was by far the worst, and hardest class I took at Oakland. He is soo unclear, it leaves you more lost than you already will be. The papers are beyond ridiculous. he has such unreal expectations of you. He expects you to know every little thing, and more about Communism. Very unfair grader, very boring, and super hard. WOuld not recommend
Wonderful, funny and extremely informative
Very informative class. The class is not difficult but you definately need to study for it.
If you don't like lecture style this is not the prof for you; he knows his stuff & can be very interesting, however, he is a difficult grader and, if you want to do well, it is essential that you go to class regularly. Going to the class WILL be the difference between a decent and a bad grade in his class.
Very interesting, gets you to look at things from a different perspective, and is willing to entertain new ideas as long as they are rigorously presented
Stinks!
Havent finished his class yet, but think its pretty kick ass. He entertains any and all non-mainstream ideas or questions you might have with a fully open mind and helps you develop more clear and strong arguments. Essay questions were intrigueing, but sometimes unclear and wordey. 3 take home essay exams of any length you choose.
I loved this class. Professor Epstein really knows his stuff. The textbook is handy to look up information you may have missed in lecture or to help with better understanding the information. The tests were not difficult, and I felt fairly graded. He likes your essay questions to be precise and to the point. If you go to class, you will do wel
Great professor but he is definitely arrogant like many poli-sci professors are. Generally a fair grader, would recommend that you put some of his ideas into your papers and you will be okay. Honestly class is really interesting once you get past Marx. I would agree with person before about his tests, they are intriguing but wordy.
I think his lectures are really interesting. You do write pretty fast to keep up with his speech rate but as long as you go to class, you should be able to get a good grade.
THIS MAN IS BRILLIANT. I WAS SO IN LOVE WITH HIM.
Very fun and interesting
If you want to learn a very detailed version of China's history then this is what you will get! His tests contain the most information that I have ever had to memorise in my whole life. He also has two books on the business and consumerism of recent China. It's a lot of work but you get a lot out of the class. and he has an awesome personality too
awesome prof, very knowledgeable and passionate and very willing to help you outside of class. i learned so much in this class-extremely vaulable and any poly sci student should take it. not any easy class, but it's not impossible, i think i got a 3.6
Really awesome studies of China professor. Has all the notes prepared in advance to hand out. ALOT of material to study for, lots of confusing names, but a really great class. Kept me interested the whole time. Youll get a good grade if you put in good hard effort. I got a 2.4 or something, but the class was so good it didnt matter. Take this class
One of the best professors I've had at OU. Lots of material and class moves at a fast pace, but he keeps it pretty interesting. If you come to class and take good notes, you should be all right. Requires a term paper. Most importantly, he's very easy on the eyes.
Great teacher and easy. Just go to class and pay attention and you will do well.
Professor Epstien is by far the greatest professor I have ever had. Not only are his lectures fascinating, his ethusiam is inspiring and he truly brings the material to life.
He is a great teacher, and he knows a lot too. This makes the even more interesting. He is very awesome.
He gave interesting lectures and knew his stuff and was very cool and entertaining, but the four tests were very challenging. His class is a good atmosphere and allows you to speak intelligently about global issues, but you have to attend lectures or you'll miss a bunch of information. Very time-consuming- I took over 50 pages of notes. Cool guy!
seriously, i love this man. he is the most knowledgeable professor i have EVER had at oakland university, and i have had quite a few. i also had him for intro to china, loved it then too. knows EVERYTHING it is amazing.. loved being there everyday.. very witty man =) TAKE HIM!!!
all of tests come directly off study guide on syllabus and from class notes. very nice guy, always willing to help and answer any questions! papers are easy and very short.
I don't know that I would ever recommend this class. It's not a blow off class, in the least. It requires a TON of note-taking and a TON of studying. And you pretty much have to attend class everyday, or you will be clueless. As for him, he's a nice guy and I would say a pretty good teacher. =)
An open minded mind opener. A serious must have prof for life not for credit. Makes the inaccessible in chewable form. Brilliant!
Intelligent, engaging and dare I say enticing, Epstein is by a wide margin the finest teacher the Political Science department has to offer. Rock on.
Amazing teacher, so intelligent. He makes you want to know more and is so willing to help. By far the best professor I have ever had, he truly is amazing!
This guy is a total jerk. He makes you read way too many books in one semester and they're all PhD level. He's got quite the worshiping clique too, and they're obviously posting here. He all but ignores everyone else. He's brilliant and his point of view is the right one--you really ***need*** to know it. But I'm just saying--he's a jerk.
Attend every class, a lot of info for an intro class. There is so much note taking it leaves very little room for enjoyment of the class. Be prepared to be proved wrong if you have an opinion different than his. Also, he is a communist and makes it very clear that he hates the U.S. by interjecting his malicious opinions during 'China' lectures.
The best Professor I've had at OU! He has a great personality and he's brilliant! This class is not boring, but it's a lot of hard work. DON'T take this class if you don't want to work your hardest. He has high expectations and he really believes in his students. Always go to class and take good notes. He's extremely difficult, but it's worth it.
You need to be in class and you must study. This is an interesting, but very demanding class. If you have a set studying routine then you'll like this professor, but if you're looking for an easy 4.0 then I do not think you should take him. Word of caution: if you see the vein in his forehead begin to pop then be prepard for him to get very angry.
This class is not for the faint of heart. It requires a lot of studying and note-taking, and it is absolutely necessary to attend every lecture. I would recommend this class only to those who are honestly interested in the subject and willing to do the work. Epstein is entertaining and knows what he's talking about.
very intelligent man to the point of intimidating. passionate about his subject and worked hard to make everyone understand the subject. kept moodle up to date with helpful notes. really liked him as a professor and would take another one of his classes without hesitation
I am in awe of this man, quite possibly the most intelligent man I've ever met. I'm taking him again this semester. Lectures are very intriguing, attendance is not at all mandatory but you should definitely go every day if you want to do good. Take good notes and listen up, all you have the whole semester is 4 papers, but they are anything but easy
Very interesting lectures. Easy to understand, very approachable. You can tell he really cares if his students are learning. He posts everything on moodle, which is helpful. Probably my favorite teacher so far at OU. He even makes funny little jokes to spice up lecture.
If you are IR major, you have to take his class. He is a great teacher, kind of funny and very helpful. His class is interesting kind of makes you want to be in the class all the time but really time consuming when it comes to tests, have to study a lot, but you will really learn a lot.
Professor Epstein is very intelligent; however, I do not think he understands that his students might not be as interested in his subject as he is. Do not take this class in the summer. He takes WAY too much time to correct your papers and mark them down. Plus, you can't read his comments because his handwriting is so poor.
He is so inspiring, which makes you want to see him, listen to him and be in his class all the time. I'm trying to be someone like him one day! Good luck Professor Epstein!
I agree with everything positive written here about him. He has a cult following, and for good reason. He is extremely intelligent, very approachable, and easy to understand. I've had 2 of his classes and rarely took notes because he posts extensive ones on Moodle. 116 credits down, and his are the only classes I've really looked forward to.
BEST CLASS I have ever taken! He is amazing and the most intelligent person at the university. He knows about Communism and is very detailed. GREAT TEACHER!!!
Content was way over my head. I had no prior studies in political studies and half the time I barely knew what he was talking about. Very intelligent man, but doesn't do well at breaking things down. He flys through the material.
Best professor I have ever had, I'm a Biochemistry major and I enjoyed his class more than my science classes. He explains everything, is very approachable and always willing to help. I got a 4.0 by going to class everyday and taking good notes, then studying 2 hours the night before his exams. Go to class and you will do well
This was by far the hardest course I've ever taken, but it was also one of the best. Epstein will challenge your views of social, political and economic issues, and force you to really think about everything in a different way. Make sure you go to every class, and take great notes. The class was so rewarding, but it is definitely a lot of work.
Very popular among poli-sci majors, but if you take him for intro to China, be warned that all the previous positive comments may not apply. Far too difficult for a 200 level class. Instead of an overview of chinese culture, we were tested in obscene detail on the political history of China from the year 0 to present day. At least he's nice though!
Great teacher, tons of notes, and attendance is a must although not required by him. Very knowledgeable on each country. Exams made me go get a shot after I was finished but the class was the best i have had so far at OU.
If you're a political science major and you want a good professor who you will learn from, take one of Epstein's classes. I was seriously thinking about changing my major before I took this class. He is so passionate about what he teaches. I got a 3.7 by going to every class, and taking good notes which will help so much in writing the take home mi
I was seriously thinking about changing my major before I took this class. He is so passionate about what he teaches. I got a 3.7 by going to every class, and taking good notes which will help so much in writing the take home mid-term and final. The pop quizzes are easy just pay attention and again, take good notes! Recommend to all poly sci majors
Extremely book heavy! My class had 8 books for the semester and they are not easy reads. There is a take home midterm and final, both long essays and one major essay. There are some small pop quizzes but the bulk of your grade is the 3 papers. The professor is smart but very full of himself and heavily cemented in his ideas/thoughts.
Amazing! Best prof. I've had. Very intelligent and poses a challenge to his students. Lots of books, but I enjoyed them. He wants to see you try so he grades a bit hard.
Such a great Professor!! He is very intelligent and knows his subject in and out. He tries to get you interested in his lectures and his exams are pretty easy if you pay attention in class and study your notes. Extremely nice guy who loves to answer questions. He is the reason I'm going to minor in PS.
Best teacher i've had at OU. His teaching methods require a lot of critical thinking, and that helps me a lot because i'm pre-law. His grading is hard, but if you attend class and do the readings, it will be an easy task... just a matter of putting everything you learned together.
Honestly, this professor is beyond passionate about his teachings. When it comes to exams be ready to write. You better explain every single detail in your paper if you want a good grade, especially for the semester analytic papers, the only reason I took his classes over and over was NOT because he was easy, but his passion for the subjects.
articulates his words better than any professor I've had. Very open to discussion and questions in class. You can learn a lot from him. He will make you work HARD for a decent grade. I ended up spending 20 hours writing a 15 page paper for the final. Half the class was lecture, the other half was student presentations.Very high expectations.
He's the most brilliant professor I've ever had, his knowledge is seemingly endless, he's a really lenient grader as long as you give explanation. He demands a high level of intelligence prior to attending the class.
Very hard. I have had him for other classes. He is very smart!!! He can take the simplest thing and make it complicated with his big words. LOL. He is awesome though. Super smart. Be prepared to read!!
Passionate about content being presented and genuinely cares that students understand the content. Encourages independent thought and invites students to hold different opinions than his own. Greatly appreciated high standard expected. This is my 3rd year at OU and he is 1 of the 3 best professors I've ever had the pleasure of learning from.
Take him. Although he is very liberal (I am an Apathist), he makes this clear from the get-go rather than trying to awkwardly conceal it. Additionally, Mr. Epstein actually did very well in trying to remain neutral. The exams were straightforward and not too difficult, maybe a bit harder than most Gen Eds, if any.
His knowledge is endless. He will challenge you. A great amount of studying is necessary even at the 100 level. His tests are difficult, but fair and accurate. His expectations are within reach, but he will push you to become a better student. He is always willing to help and further explain the topic.
Professor Epstein is an excellent professor. He is always willing to help you in anyway he can. He isn't hard to get along with, but his class will not be an easy "A".
Professor Epstein is incredibly passionate about everything he is teaching and it shows in his lectures. He makes sure every student is understanding the material and offers office hours if extra help is needed. His tests and quiz aren't hard if you attend class and make sure you review the notes daily. You will have a term paper due a the end.
He is the best in the Political Science Department at OU. 377 is a tough class, but very rewarding in the end. Readings are difficult at times, but he'll walk you through it. Visit him during office hours and he will provide all the clarification you need.
Professor Epstein gives truly enjoyable lectures, although they are a lot of info to process at once and I often left class feeling like my head was spinning. However, they are so interesting and I always enjoyed his class. He gives lots of extra credit options and has a good sense of humor. Don't be late on assignments!
Absolutely love the couple of classes I've had with him. His lectures are interesting and he obviously knows what he's talking about. Assigns a lot of reading but you can get away without doing it if you listen to his lectures and take some notes. Occasionally does quizzes but most of grade based on take-home exams you have a week to do.
Alan was the best. His class was tough, a lot of reading and comprehension. However, he makes himself very accessible to students who are falling behind and need some one-on-one clarification. He is the kind of professor who really wants you to succeed. He will work with you in all aspects. Excellent professor.
Prof. Epstein covered a wide range of material thoroughly and fairly and encouraged everyone in the classes of his that I've taken to share their thoughts and opinions, holding extremely respectful debates and guiding critical discussion. Encourages independent thought and analysis. Also made himself available for help during his office hours. Rec.
Professor Epstein is the greatest professor I've ever had. This man and this class changed my life. I've taken everything he teaches. He simply wants you to learn. The work is fair for the level of class it is. As long as you pay attention during lectures you will do fine. His lectures are engaging and his level of knowledge is incredible.
I'm not even a political science major and he managed to keep this class interesting for me. He clearly knows his stuff inside and out and is willing to answer any questions people have about the topics. Pay attention during lectures and you'll most likely pass the course. No homework, aside from reading occasionally and the term essay. Great prof.
He is a very knowledgeable professor and made class enjoyable. I would not recommend taking him for any entry level course. He is a tough grader, but offers a lot of extra credit throughout the semester. The only complaint I have is that he is extremely bias on certain factors of politics, and makes his personal views very very clear.
He honestly wants you to learn his class. He sometimes throws in a pun or a joke in during lecture. He leaves all the in-lecture notes on moodle so if you miss a day, no worries. It's still worth it to go to class because it's interesting to hear him talk. He gives lots of side notes, too, and you can ask him questions throughout. Def recommend.
By far my favorite professor! He is knowledgeable about every subject he teaches and you can tell he is passionate about his job. You will know his political positions on topics, but he accepts those who challenge his viewpoint and encourages discussion. He is also constantly available through email and in office if material is hard to understand!
He's a great professor! but get ready to be there the whole time with little to no breaks. The work load is super super heavy. You will have huge timed exams. The Essay is super hard and he does not give a clear idea of what you need to write about.
He's a great professsor, love the class just be prepared to work you butt off for a good grade.
Dr. Epstein lectures the entire class period, so there is a lot of material. He isn't specific about what will be on tests so you have to study everything. There is also a very long paper. He is definitely a GPA dropper. Even though he is a nice guy, I do not recommend.
I have taken Prof. Epstein twice now, and plan on taking him again. He is the man. His courses are inspiring and eye-opening to world issues. I would recommend him to anyone as he is knowledgeable about what he teaches and cares about every student. His courses are based largely on lectures with take home examination papers for a midterm and final
Professor Epstein goes above and beyond in his commitment to academic research, his students, and to the courses he teaches. His notes are such a valuable resource in studying for his classes, but the accompanying lectures and the conversations that they provoke are why one should really try to take at least one course with this professor.
Here's a tip: The more information, the more long winded sentences u have as ur answers to questions, the more points you can earn because he looks for what to give u points on. Just be sure most of your information is right and you are trying. I once never finished a writing portion for the exam but got full points b/c it was chock full of info.
Alan is the best professor I've had so far. Extremely knowledgeable and enthusiastic about the material he teaches. He genuinely cares about student success, so he offers extra credit opportunities and is pretty generous with his grading. I look forward to having more classes with him in the future.
PS1400 (formerly PS131) Alan is a great professor. He is very accessible outside of class, answers emails in a very timely manner. You are graded based on quizzes, exams, and a paper for a book read in class. He is very knowledgeable on the subjects he teaches, and while he is definitely more liberal, he is very open to any other opinions.
Professor Epstein is very caring, but lectures most of the class so be prepared to take lots of notes. Memorize the material for the exams which are multiple choice, short answer, and an essay. A lot of writing and material, but if you work hard you should be able to get a good grade. He's willing to answer any question and clarify material!
I wish I would have taken more classes in my undergrad with Professor Epstein. He is simply the best professor. The class was challenging, but if you show up and listen to his lectures, he clears up all of the material. I had to really read and work in his class, but he is so helpful in and out of class to all of his students! Highly recommend!
It was a hostile learning environment. I was treated like an idiot whenever I participated. It led me to start skipping. I liked the world politics content, but it didnt have to be torture learning it.
We had 3 tests, 3 quizzes, and 1 paper for the grade. Very caring and willing to accommodate your schedule if you need help or just want to chat. Definitely need to do a quick review of notes each week depending on if you are a quick learner or not.
Professor Epstein is a wonderful teacher. He is kind, compassionate, and extremely intelligent. He is like a walking encyclopedia and his lectures are filled to capacity with information. If you are interested in learning and love history, take his class.
Professor Epstein is such a good professor! He knows a lot about China and will make his lectures very interesting and filled with information. Theres not a question you can answer to which he doesnt have an answer. There are a 4/5 quizzes, midterm, final and a research paper. Go to class and show that youre participating!
Professor Epstein is very knowledgeable in the field of global politics. While he leans to the left on most issues, he does not let this bias interfere with his teachings. I have learned so much from his course, even though I took it as a Gen Ed. I highly recommend Epstein for any class you can get him for. You will learn a lot and have fun too!
Prof Epstein is really knowledgable and nice guy. There is a ton of material to learn and it's all on the test, but I didn't study that hard. If you pay attention in lecture, it's pretty easy to absorb. He is specific about how he wants you to write the final paper, DON'T save it or the draft for the last minute. Easy Gen Ed, would recommend.
The rudest professor I have ever met. He talks down at you and makes you feel dumb. If you ask him to repeat something he does it in a rude mannerism. He grades too hard for a gen Ed course. I have never met someone more disrespectful.
3 takehome papers 3 quizzes & 1 term paper; have to do readings to pass; extremely dry way of talking; well structured and gives extra material to study from; doesn't require that you be there but it would probably help to understand the readings; cares about his subject material!
One of the rudest and most disrespectful professors I have ever had at Oakland Univeristy. Treats his freshman level course as you would a graduate level course and will absolutely ruin your night with his comments on your work. Hoping he sees this
If taken as an online class, this professor has in person (synchronous) and two to three hour long lectures (asynchronous) which is a ridiculous amount of study hours for a 1000 level course. The comments he makes on papers are unprofessional and overly rude, not even close to constructive criticism.
Is completely technologically illiterate!
I'm mostly offering this as a correction to some of the criticisms -- specifically that he's a jerk. Honestly, the guy is one of the nicest, most considerate professors I've run into there. Very forgiving for late papers, too. The texts assigned are not "graduate" level. Just read TF books and use your head -- you'll be fine.
Very rude person. I once asked to repeat something because of my disability something he was very well known of and he responds in a very rude manner.
His lectures are the entire basis for the quizzes and exams. I spent hours on the lectures for notes outside of class. He is a great lecturer, but the notes provided didn't facilitate understanding well. You have to spend time on the lecturers on your own. He is very reasonable and cares about the students' achievement and understanding. Work hard!
Didn't love him. His lectures are extremely dry and boring. Quizzes and tests are nice as you only have to answer a certain amount of questions and you can pick but they are very difficult and he grades tough. All are paragraph/essay responses. He also isn't always the kindest.
He is very accessible out of class. He makes himself available for you to ask questions, so ask them! It helps a lot. Quizzes and Exams are written, but you get to choose out of a number of options which ones you respond to. Make sure to take a lot of notes and attend class, as that will definitely benefit your grade.
