He's pretty cocky, but he knows what he's talking about, likes to tell stories.
yeah, he is a little full or himself, but he does know what he's talking about...and his stories help you remember what you've learned...and what NOT to do!
I've had this guy for three classes and I'm pretty sure he thinks he's the only teacher that REALLY matters. Ridiculous at times with expectations and full of himself. Steer clear!
Teaches you what you need to know, very good at covering sample problems so you get practice. Thinks very highly of himself, this can sometimes get annoying.

Alan is truly full of him self. He even handed out his own book. Test were easy, he essentially told you what was one them. The group projects were fun!
alan is a great teacher. he tells a lot of stories, but in a class like intro to entre, that's exactly what you need. he has real experience and he's able to use that experience to teach his classes.
It was an interesting class. The tests are fairly easy. He will tell you mostly everything that will be on the test. Tests really don't reflect your knowledge. Do not buy the book for this class, it is worthless. We never used it one time and has nothing to do with the test. Overall he is very good.
The least informative professor I have ever had. This class was a huge waste of time. It seemed like simply a platform for the Alan Fine show. He sold us his own self-help book as one of the texts... insanely self-centered.
The class was very interesting. He gives a lot of real world examples. There are two papers and a presentation that you have to complete for the class. The lectures are very informative, but the book is really hard to read.
this teacher is weird. he seems like he shouldnt be teaching. I wouldnt take another class from him, but it was kinda easy. He gave me a B- although I failed one test. Take this teacher if you want to get a decent grade for going half the time and not learning anything.
Hands down one of the worst teachers I have ever had. Aside from the fact that he used his teaching position merely as a vehicle to stand on his political soapbox, we learned almost nothing about the subject and received arbitrary grades on tedious and useless assignments. Uses "participation points" to justify any grade.
Business Planning Class, also took for MGMT 4008. Pure garbage; if you want to get lectured by the most egotistical, delusional, self-centered circus act take this class. Otherwise avoid, avoid, avoid, avoid!!!
Echo the comments below. And Carlson wonders why their ratings have fallen off the deep end. It's because of teachers like Alan Fine and Raoul Schander.
It's no surprise Alan Fine's ratings are so low. He's a poor teacher, he talks himself up at every opportunity he gets and he makes his students feel dumb if they don't give him the answer he wants. If you're thinking Entre at the U, take Spruth. Alan might just ruin things for you; as he did for me.
i don't know what to say. i transferred into the U thinking i would get better quality professors than i had at augsburg. so far prof. fine has fallen well below standard. he's totally out of touch with students.
very uptight and everything is his way or the highway. I feel he thinks he is perfect and everything he does is perfect. .
Absolutely the worst professor I have ever had. He has no interest in students, could care less about the class. He is must more concerned with letting the world know how awesome he is. Slow and hard grader, unclear in assignments, doesn't say what's on the exams ("just know the material"). Biggest regret of college is taking a class with him.
DO NOT...I REPEAT DO NOT TAKE A CLASS WITH ALAN FINE. Alan Fine is the most pompous, arrogant instructor I have ever been around. He makes you feel dumb for asking a question, he is inflexible on any and all assignments and his assignments are all ridiculous. I am almost out of room, but if you still take him after reading this, its a mistake!
This class is extremely boring, but attendance is graded so you have to go to class. However, it's not hard to get an A because the curve is really low.
The testing made no sense in this class, other than bubbles are easier to grade than essays. 450 students in one semester; no one with this many students in so few weeks, can accurately judge a students capabilities. Gave good lectures, however, will be forever remembered for those disagreeable test. That's too bad. Everyone left feeling angst.
Test do not accurately gauge students performance.
For Alan Fine's: hypocrisy is possible and parody may certainly go undetected. The life as you tell, differs from what others perceive. You graduated a bunch of solid test takers, not an atmosphere for thinkers or creators. Where was my opinion? shadowed by another man
I love how many people hate on this guy. He's confident and his stories are all relevant, inspiring, and entertaining. He's extremely successful and nice enough to teach now because he knows he has something to offer. Tests are STRAIGHT from slides and are thus just a formality. Read the slides and get inspired. Best teacher @ U. 3 classes w him.
His exams are hard. You have to memorize lots of slides to do well. Everything is curved. Talks too much about himself and not the content of exams.
I loved this class. I think Alan is an outstanding professor. Feels great to go to class because he is a very inspiring person. Concepts in the class are not that relevant, and yes he made the test 100% from slides. Do not bother to buy the textbook. If you have to take this class I strongly recommend to you: take it with him!
Great teacher, great class. Tests were hard and hard to study for because he has so much information and study guides are no help, also confusing wording. But our projects were extremely useful. Do not take this class if you dont have a lot of time to commit to the projects. He recommends you go to office hours but is always late, otherwise grea
If you are interested in truly inspirational success stories, Alan Fine is your guy. He is repaying society by merely sharing his wealth of knowledge with his students. He is rather conceited and should be out making millions not just $100k + teaching at Carlson. Tests are hard and projects require hours to complete. Just some food for thought.....
Hands down the most time consuming and difficult class I've taken, but also the most rewarding. By working through the projects you learn a lot about teamwork and the actual subject matter. The text book was extremely useless though.
I thought he was great, I truly enjoyed his real life examples and motivational teaching style. I found the projects very helpful and relevant to both the class and the real world.
I really enjoyed this class. He is a bit of a tough grader, as no one ever received over a 92 on any of the group projects. Don't bother buying the book, as all of his exams are based on the lecture notes. His tests were tricky, as he would change one word in a definition so you had to know your stuff. Take advantage office hours to review drafts.
Took the Class Spring and thought the work load was less than other CSOM classes. Attendance is mandatory, textbook is not necessary since the exams are covered from his power points, but do STUDY!. Often, Alan rambles about his life stories and does an adequate job of relating it to class concepts. Just be ready "For some food for thought".
Went out of his way to make sure I knew the material back and forth. Yes, his tests and grading is hard, but you will learn a LOT if you are open minded and a good listener.
Alan Fine is the man, hands down. By far the best teacher I've had at Carlson thus far. His experience and life stories are awe-inspiring and relevant to course material. Make sure to go to his office hours for help on assignments and projects.
Only good thing about Alan: He had interesting stories. The bad: Rude. HARD tests. A- on the final, B/B+ on tests, B+ as final group project avg grade, and a C+ as my final grade. Why? Missed a couple of classes (literally) so he gave me an F for my Participation grade. GO TO CLASS. Don't bother buying the textbook, tests are 100% slides & stories.
Be prepared for personal stories. Keeps the lectures interesting. The group projects are alot of work and time consuming. If you want to get an "A" you need to show up for class. I would take him again for another class.
The best teacher I have ever had. If Fine is teaching the class, just take it. You will be glad you did. I feel like I will be successful in life because of him!
I wouldn't take a class from Alan again. His lectures were not very useful. The workload was far more than necessary to teach the subject and I learned little from actually doing the projects. Accomplishing this busy work effected my ability to study for other classes. I didn't learn much other than Alan's format requirements-bold, or not bold..
Definitely take a class from this man. He does boast and tell lots of stories, but he has the experience to back it up. And you can learn from his stories- not just successes but he shares failures too. Hard work, but worth it. Alan pushes students to work hard but is very helpful if you go and speak with him. I would take all his classes.
I felt inspired every day I came to class. To tell the truth, I was transformed by the class. I didn't just learn about management, but I felt like I learned a lot about myself and how to be a better person, a better leader. If Fine teaches it, take it. You won't regret it.
Only uses power point materials on the exam, never buy the books he recommends. Only study from the power points. His class time is spent primarily talking about his personal life expierences.
Didn't even buy the book. All his tests are taken directly from PPT slides, so study directly from there. He spends a lot of time telling stories from his experiences, some REALLY long, so by the time he gets to why he's telling the story, you forget what it connects to. He unrealistically thinks everyone can be given the benefit of the doubt.
Alan has tons of real life experience that he shares in class. Majority of the stories are very interesting and make one think about the business world. Very sincere guy, can be arrogant at times. He even admits to it. I would recommend him and this course to a friend. No text book required. Attendance is mandatory.
Alan Fine is not arrogant. He is inspirational and has a lot to share. If you truly want a class that is going to benefit your life, take Alan Fine. You won't regret it. A lot of the benefit I received from class you can't test a person on. You could never replicate a class like this online. It was truly a "transformational" experience!
I made a massive mistake by signing up for Alan Fine's class. It is extremely boring, and pretty much useless. Spend your hard earned money and time taking another class. This one is not worth it.
This was a great class. Alan really cares about his students and gives real world advice and his wisdom will benefit me for years to come. His stories are actually self-deprecating. Go to class. There are students that are upset at him on this site probably because they didn't study and because he held them accountable for it.
This was hands down the beat class ever. Only take it with Alan Fine. He is awesome!!!!!!!!
Alan Fine seems to only care about himself - he frequently mentions winning body building competitions and he even wrote a Carlson School song. His assignments are incredibly unclear and gives roundabout answers when you ask about it. Wouldn't recommend as a professor.
I have never looked around a room and see a group of students despise a professor so much. Alan brags about himself for majority of every class. Do not take a class with him, especially if you are a non-business student. I was really hoping I would learn something from this class, but Alan has convinced me to drop my entre minor.
If you don't memorize everything from his boring powerpoints, you won't do well on the exams.
Definitely one of my favorite prof at the U. Class are so inspiring and slides are super clear about everything. He has a high ego so some people don't like him. NEVER BUY TEXTBOOK even if he requires you! Tests are hard but if you study the slides you're be fine. A great experience for me and I think if you study and you'll get the grade you want.
Professor Fine was outstanding. I learned a tremendous amount and feel that I have become a better person because of it. There are long-term applications to my life from his teachings both personally and in terms of leadership.
Alan Fine is the most arrogant professor I have ever had. He gives assignments that are impossible and says he'll help, but when you ask for it he makes you feel dumb for asking and doesn't help at all. Lectures are boring & pointless - he only talks about how important he is and the people he knows. Don't buy the textbook either you won't use it.
If you don't like group projects too bad, every project you have will with you're assigned group. The tests are fairly easy, all you have to really do is look at his posted lectures, if he didn't have you write on your nametag for attendance there'd be no point in going. As for the projects, he is a tough grader and provides no feedback for them.
Fine is awesome! He is so qualified it's unreal, he has so much experience and knowledge about leadership, and some cool stories. He starts each class talking for 15-30 min about irrelevant stuff but tests are easy, pretty much all common sense stuff. 2 tests, 5 group projects, and a cumulative final. Projects graded by TA's generous graders.
Alan Fine has many good ideas and concepts, but to bad he doesn't teach it well. He is beyond arrogant, ignorant, and rude. He humiliated a student in front of the whole class. Alan is really a hit or miss guy. You either like his lectures or you hate his lectures. Personally, he was a miss for me, and I would highly suggest not taking his classes.
The assignments and group projects are pretty easy and kind of fun, but the tests cover so much material and its all memorization. The tests are 50 multiple choice questions. I would study pretty hard & always score about average. I found his lectures pretty interesting. He tells a lot of stories from his life experiences.
I loved Alan Fine's class! He tells stories to relate the material, so it's not just looking at powerpoint slides and he makes it easier to understand the material that way. Study the lecture notes thoroughly for the exams, all of the questions are scenarios so you need to make sure you understand the concepts. DO NOT BUY THE BOOK!
-If you're a go-getter, you'll enjoy Alan's class. -He's been successful and thus has much wisdom to impart. Enjoy it! -Don't get the book, but KNOW his slides for tests. Think carefully about every question bc there are a lot of "mostly right" wrong answers. -Get to know him, you won't regret it! He's a great resource to have.
Alan is really high on his horse and thinks he is the smartest, most well-qualified professor at the U. But to be honest, he does back it up with legit experience. This class was literally just about how to be an employee at a corporation. Beware of the group projects, you have to follow the guidelines TO THE T!
Professor Fine is a good lecturer with interesting stories and lessons, however, this class has some of the least insightful grading I've ever experienced. Tests are essentially memorization of lists of concepts with little application, and expect to lose many points on minutiae for group projects. The Carlson curve helps somewhat, but not enough.
As a lot of people mentioned, Alan Fine is probably one of the most narcissistic people I have ever met, the lectures revolve around 30-45 minute stories of different times in his life where he has led tiny companies into powerhouses. He thinks of himself as the God of management and business. Don't bother purchasing the book
Yeah, he does like to spend a lot of time telling you about his past and his accomplishments, but what's wrong with that? His intentions are to let you know what things he has done in order to succeed and push you forward in the same direction. Attendance is essential, and the overall projects are hard. You will learn a lot about life in business
I have mix opinions about Alan. Basically, he talks about his whole life in business but he tries to relate it with his lecture somehow. Tests are hard, all memorization. Final is accumulative so prepare to memorize everything to the T. Group projects are ok so hopefully you can get along with your group otherwise you are screwed.
Group projects are tough if you're stuck with a group you're incompatable with. Make sure you follow the instructions for group projects to the T or points will be docked. That said, Alan is always willing to help give feed back or redirect you if you're going in the wrong direction. Tests are tough so make sure you know EVERYTHING off the slides.
Almost all of the assignments are group projects, so make sure you get along with them when they are assigned. The tests really make you think, you will have to memorize almost everything on the power points. But, Alan Fine is a great professor and often times ties in real-life events to concepts being taught in class.
Alan is a hit or miss for most people.. Personally I liked him and his stories.. He's pretty inspirational in his lectures. Overall fair guy but he doesn't put up with crop either. You really have to study and remember terms and lists to do well on tests. Project instructions are kind of confusing and demanding. Don't bother buying the book
Alan fine is a great guy but sometimes feels like your time is wasted with all of his stories. They are entertaining and make class more fun but sometimes they go on forever and ever and he tells the same ones more than once. The tests are very specific but easy to pass if you follow his study guide exactly! Would take this professor for this class
TO GET AN "A": - Go to class EVERY day - 3 brutal tests are worth 60% of your grade. PRINT THE SLIDES and take notes on them for each class; for any slide that is a list of terms, ask for examples and be able to DIFFERENTIATE between the terms. - FOLLOW. ASSIGNMENT. DIRECTIONS. WORD. FOR. WORD. (including anything he says/adds in lecture)
I honestly really liked Alan. His stories do take up a lot of time, but they are pretty interesting and enjoyable to hear. Tests are pretty much straight memorization, which sucks and also means that you have to go to every single lecture to get the info you need, esp. because there was no textbook. Go to office hours. Group project was just okay.
Alan Fine spends his entire lecture talking about himself. If you ask questions, he's either rude, references the syllabus, or stumbles over a response. Lectures are dense and full of information he never has time to talk about, because he's busy telling stories about himself. Group project aren't very clear, and neither is the material.
Alan is very egotistical and self-centered. His stories do help to give clarity to the example he is trying to prove, but he ends up rambling on for what seems like forever. He often tests beyond the book and the slides. Pay attention to what he says in class, you will be tested!
If you go to class and appear interested you will do fine. The course is not difficult but the curve makes your grade dependent on others, so be sure to do your best irrespective of how others are doing. Group projects are a huge part of your grade. The exams are based off of the slides so memorization is key. Alan is an interesting guy
Alan is very knowledgable in the subject he teaches. His lectures are extremely dry and revolve around him. His tests are all memorization and are fairly difficult (lots of content), however the medians are fairly low. He has little respect for his students and is often rude when asked questions outside of class either in person or online.
Alan loves himself infinitely more than he loves teaching. Will ramble on about his personal experiences for most of lecture. You won't use the textbook other than for case blog posts. Gives highly critical feedback that borders on rude and condescending. All for constructive criticism but Alan rarely points out ways to improve, focuses on flaws.
Alan Fine- A drinking game. Drink every time he says integrity, brings up his job with Arthur Anderson, or tells a story, two drinks if the story has to do with him meeting the president, corruption, his book, or playing piano. Very very interesting guy but not the best professor. He mostly just reads right off the slides and the tests are hard.
Alan Fine? No. More like Alan Fantastic or Alan Fascinating or Alan Fearless! If you take his class, buckle your seatbelt and get ready for the best adventure ride featuring unlimited stories of Alan, Alan, and Alan. He loves his own voice more than anything. Really though, 350 words is not enough to describe his poor teachings as a professor.
He's fine just as his last name suggests. Really, if you study the material you'll do fine. Just make sure you're doing better than your peers. Oh except that group paper, that's not fine. Goodluck. Only thing I'll add to those previous ratings is this: Don't take a shot every time he says "interesting" or you will die.
Alan is unlike any other prof I've had. The midterms and finals are doable with tons of memorization, but it's such boring & dry material. He also rambles on about himself throughout lecture, making it feel like forever. If you have him for MGMT3001 don't bother buying the book, I never opened mine! Group projects are alright with the right people.
He spends his lectures talking about himself and his sucesses. His office hours continie to do the same. He played the piano in one of his office hours... His final exam study guide, when filled in, was 37 pages of content. Hands down the worst professor I have ever had
Alan loves to talk about himself, but in his defense he has really cool experiences that are actually interesting to listen to. He's extremely knowledgeable about international business and you won't be able to BS your way through. He also gives brutal but thorough feedback.
I wouldn't be surprised if many of the positive reviews are written by Alan Fine himself. Every Amazon review for his book is written by himself, and his entire lectures are him telling stories about how great he is. "I've read the entire memoirs of Thommas Jefferson. Wait, was Thommas Jefferson a president?"
I really don't know what to say about Alan. He spends most of his lectures talking about how great his life was through stories and tangents. This can be really interesting, but at times annoying. It was defiantly different than your typical Carlson class. Because of his stories though he ends up breezing through the actual material used for tests
I took one of Fine's classes and regret it immensely. A waste of money and time. Hands down the worst lecturer I have ever had. He is self centered, arrogant, boring, uninteresting. You have been warned!.
Alan loves to tell stories that show how attainable the dream is of starting your own business.
Worst professor ever. The most conceded and pretentious person I have ever met. The class is basically just Alan talking about himself and is based off a book he wrote himself. The exams will be hard cause u dont learn in the class. He will rarely get back to emails and treats students w/ disrespect. Most useless & boring class I have ever taken.
Alan is very knowledgeable in his field of study. He is a very tough grader, but all of the grades are based off of medians, so there is a massive curve. Don't buy the book because everything in his lectures are solely based off his slides. Just study the slides before all of the exams and you will be fine.
This class was okay. The lectures were interesting and are very inspiring sometimes but it can get boring since he just talks the whole time. All assignments are in memorandum form and he is a tough grader. Group assignments are not that hard but can be difficult in the beginning. The tests are not as hard but STUDY STUDY or you can fall behind.
Alan loves to talk about himself and self promote. Did you know he wrote a book? If you didnt, hell remind you every few minutes. A lot of what he talks about in random stories ends up on tests and often times he never really covers the material on his slides. If you can, try and take someone else.
I really don't want to bash Alan, but he makes it impossible. He is constantly promoting his book which is interesting considering that it's a BUSINESS ETHICS class. He doesn't teach the material on the tests; his class consists 90% of his personal "stories" which are interesting but useless for the class. Not the worst, but take another prof.
Alan Fine is the most selfobsessed teacher Ive ever seen. He loves to brag in class: according to him hes a body builder, swimmer, politician, musician, CEO, and author while being a teacher. He tests us over material in his book, which consist of things he made up. You gotta study because he doesnt teach in class. Get a different prof.
It's not the worst class. He grades hard on assignments, but he tells you exactly what to do. The tests are really hard but he does give you the information. It's not a trick class, it's just a tough one. Everything gets curved so just do better than the class on things.
Terrible. Talks about himself for most of class, takes away from the actual material. Will not prepare you for tests, you'll need to do it yourself.
Alan is a very interesting guy who really cares a lot about course material. That being said, he isn't the best teacher. Lectures are interesting, but goes off on tangents and then flies through the course material. Alan's tests are hard but not impossible. He is a tough grader on projects but curves the class and gives constructive feedback.
Alan fine is probably the worst professor I've had yet. He spend every lecture talking about himself or COVID-19 and rarely got into the class material. As for projects he was terrible at setting expectations or giving directions on them and would wait till after we turned them in to explain what we should've done and how we did poorly. DO NOT TAKE
Alan Fine could be considered as one of the unclear professors I have had. If you ever want to be on his good side, talk about his book (A familiar place) I remember this book for not reading its material but for his marketing tactics used on students to purchase his book. 0/10 I wasted money and I feel bad for him.
Alan has a lot to say about himself and his experiences which can be interesting but is not related to the course enough that he should be talking about it throughout the entire lecture everyday. A little blunt, not a great teacher. You'll need to study on your own and read rubrics(he won't explain what he expects until after). Find someone else.
He bases his tests on his own philosophies that he has made up. There is an important material that we learn in class but he decides to test us on his perspective that he has made up. He views his ideas as the most important, which isn't right. We should not need to know his opinion. Also, grades at the 4000 level when taking a 1000 level class.
Alan Fine is decent. He is clearly intelligent, but he can't translate that to teaching. He talks at you for an hour and a half about the content which you do not yet understand. Grading criteria a toss-up and for all the large assignments the grading criteria is basically non-existent. The class is heavily curved though, which kept my grade high.
He does not respect students opinions or time. Poor time management skills. Biggest ego ever seen. Worst, most difficult professor. Changed up presentation order the night before (meaning I went from presenting on Wed to Mon), giving us less than 12hrs to prep. Vague instructions. Hard tests. Terrible teacher. Provides harsh, negative feedback.
Honestly Alan wasn't a bad professor at all for this course. I've heard negative things, but he clearly has experience with this subject, and really does want you to understand the concepts. He definitely doesn't appreciate when you go against his views, but it's pretty easy to tell what he wants from you as a student. Exams are also extremely easy
Avoid at all costs, can't sugarcoat it. This class was harder than it needed to be because all the content was rushed at the end. If you want to be successful, study a LOT for the exams and participate in class. Grading can be pretty subjective and hard to predict.
Dear prof Fine, I'm not paying tuition to hear you market your book every class period. I don't care if it is a supplemental reading material. Thanks!
avoid at all costs. all alan does is talk about himself and his experiences and looks down on those who don't know everything like he pretends to. he is extremely condescending, goes on tangents about his life and how easy everything was for him. workload isn't too bad and coursework would be fun if it was a different professor
Not a single assignment given leading up to the week 7 midterm and practically no guidance in study prep. His lectures are painfully boring, in a 60 minute recorded lecture he said the phrase in essence 46 times... Alan also pushes students to buy his book every chance he gets, seems unethical, which is ironic being that hes an ethics professor.
Alan's lectures have given me absolutely nothing, all he does it talk about himself and how amazing he is. And then he turns around and gives us a midterm on topics he has never even mentioned in lectures. Super vague assignment instruction and then grades on things that are not stated in the instructions. Very self centered and pretentious.
Professor Fine's instruction is not student-friendly. It honestly feels like he makes things harder for students, so he can use it as an opportunity to brag about his own accomplishments. He does not provide expectations on what he looks for in assignments. Overall, I would not recommend this class or professor to anyone.
Talks about how many amazing people he's met all day every day as if those are his biggest achievements. Boring-est ever. Better sign up for a year of Harvard Business Review or any Coursera management course and you'd learn 10x more. You'd learn more from listening to inspirational speakers on Youtube. Complete waste of time but had to take it. :(
Fine is the worst. Avoid him. Makes a 1000 level ethics class seem like rocket science. The "textbook" is a book that he wrote and his tests literally have questions referring to himself like he's a famous philosopher. "What are Fine's views on..." He never mentions test material in lectures just tells irrelevant life stories. Tests are brutal.
Professor Fine was one of my least favorite professors so far. He would constantly talk about his own stories/ experiences and discuss the book he wrote during lectures, which left us with no time to learn any of the actual concepts we would be getting tested on. He looks for very specific answers on the team assignments, so those were very hard.
Alan may be the worst professor I have ever encountered. He is one of the most self-centered and egotistical people I have ever met. Our class barely heard the lecture/ppt notes because he would speak about himself, what hes done, or just some random story about himself. Im convinced he literally just likes to hear himself talk ABOUT HIMSELF.
The only reason he is getting as good of a score as he is is because I got a lot better at chess in his class. 80% of the lecture was him talking about himself, So for 80% of the lecture I was playing chess. He tests you on very specific parts of the lectures, So have those open while you're taking the test and you should do okay.
This man is not fine. If you enjoy people talking about themselves, take this class. If you actually want to learn, find a different section with a different professor! This class wasn't terribly hard, but to endure such painful lectures is not worth it. Spends at least half of each lecture boasting about himself.
this is by far the worst professor to ever have in this university. he is a narcissistic man who makes it impossible to pass a class where he talks about himself for an hour and 15 minutes. he doesnt care about his students at all and could care less if they succeed. NEVER take any of his classes.
I cannot stress this enough, DO NOT TAKE a class with Fine. I thought I'd be okay but this course was horrible. Every class he will drone on about himself and how great he is. He has said many problematic things and I am very disappointed I had him as a professor.
Wanna hear about his books? The perfect class then. Talks constantly about his book and how you should buy it. Considers himself a god and writes questions about his own opinions like "what are professors Fine's views on.." Avoid this teacher at all costs. Every other option was full but it just happened all 3 of his were wide open!! awful
Loves pitching his book to students and tries to get students to purchase the book. Spends more time confirming he has a god complex than teaching about the actual class. Gives no information of what will be on the test and just makes it a surprise. Also writes questions on his own opinion and stuff you would know if you "read his book"
Talks about himself the entire class period. You don't learn anything on the slides and then get docked for not knowing the class material. Quizzes include questions about what his personal opinions are on business topics. Provides negative and sometimes harsh feedback and is condescending.
The class was easy, but Fine is the most insufferable professor I've ever had. He will rush through packed slides that contain the actual content of the course then ramble about his life and say generic insights that he thinks are his gift to the world. I'm convinced he only teaches to flex how successful he is to his students and sell his book.
The notorious Alan Fine. I was told not to take him and I gambled on him and boy did I mess up. I've never met someone so self-centered and egocentric. This isn't a management class, this is a class to learn about all of Alan Fine's successes in life. He expects quite a bit but leaves you only to prepare yourself. An A is manageable.
Proof of infamous deeds and silly little ego abound, but lets talk about the actual class structure and assignments. Tumescent obsession with 12 Angry Men, terrible, vauge assignment rubrics, these childish assignments would be breezy, except for ridiculously strange, vauge formatting requiremnts & TA, which are never clearly explained. AVOID
As a previous comment stated, save your soul. Alan really loves to hear himself talk as he spends the whole lecture giving his whole life story. Tests are awful and assignment directions are super unclear, when the average grade for an assignment/test is low he will send very passive emails which will ruin your whole day AVOID AT ALL COSTS!!!!
Class is filled with rambling, meaningless anecdotes rather than the material you'll be tested on. Tests are open book, but the test questions often have little to do with course material. Group assignments have confusing rubrics, which he grades very harshly. Imagine Jordan Peterson, with none of the insight and twice the ego.
I definitely would recommend waiting another semester to take this class with another prof. I really tried to stay in this class but I realized that there was no way I would do well in his class. He makes you buy the textbook that he wrote and never actually teaches anything useful in his lectures. Try to avoid.
Very lecture heavy would recommend reading the textbook before class or during the lecture. The tests are very complicated and so are the projects.A LOT of time before projects due or before we have tests so you can ask questions to figure out what the format is ahead of time.He also is aware when test q's are unclear so he will give extra points.
Fine actually cares that students learn things you can benefit from that you can't get by memorizing from a textbook. It's not his job to hold your hand and make sure that you are following everything that's going on at this big age. Don't say that he's bragging all the time, instead ask for help to be just as successful and you'll be surprised.
In essence, do not take MGMT 1005 with Professor Fine. He's very egotistical and speeds through lectures to take more time to talk about himself. His tests are very difficult, despite them being open note and open book. He assigns group essays, and then penalizes students when they sound like "multiple students wrote them."
If you want to listen to TEDtalks about himself and his books, take him. This class would have been easy if he decided to actually teach class content. He claims that there is no need to buy his book for this class but then tests us on the content of HIS BOOK. He is a nice person but he is not a good prof.
Do not take his class. I read these reviews and I thought I would be okay but I was wrong. SUPER unclear in grading criteria and not helpful with questions. Never had office hours because he didn't show up to them! Tests were hard and made no sense. Very self centered and never really teaches material well.
People rip Alan Fine because it's the cool thing to do and because everyone else does. They say he's egotistical when he's really just trying to put in perspective what he believes his students can do. If you're coming purely for a grade, maybe look for a different professor, but if you want someone that will teach you useful skills, take Alan Fine
"When I was a CEO", "In my book", so self centered. Do not take his class. Like everyone else, I thought I would be fine, but I hated every day listening to him. He is extremely disorganized and truly could not care less about the people taking his class. Very good speaker, and he is super interesting, but his words never come to a point.
Alan Fine is one of the most egotistical and self-centered people I have ever met. His lectures are almost entirely common sense and hold very little content related to the tests. His Canvas set-up is awful and studying for tests is next to impossible. The tests in general are extremely hard and all application-based.
Please don't take a Fine class, YOU WILL REGRET IT. Lectures consist of a mix of his life and how great he thinks it is, his book (which you have to buy), the success of his relatives, and about 15 minutes of skiing through the lecture slides. Please don't take it.
It is almost hilarious how interesting, weird, unique and at times, incredibly frustrating Alan Fine is. I wouldn't take his class again because at times I was very confused about what he wants us to do (Group projects). That being said, there were times throughout his disorganized lectures that he said thought provoking things that stuck with me.
He is a teacher with no clear grading criteria. Difficult grader, does not explain what is required on papers well enough to be successful. Tests are difficult and does not go over material well. He focuses on telling stories rather than discussing material. Have fun studying everything on your own. More of an inspirational speaker than a teacher.
Lectures are pointless but attendance is mandatory. Tests are based on material he posts for each unit covering a few of the bigger aspects of his lecture and are 50% of your grade. The provided study guides are inadequate because of their lack of depth. Severely graded projects with a randomly assigned group are worth 30% of your grade.
All of his lectures, without a doubt, turn into a 40 min "talk about his life" time where you are graced with his conceited tales. There are two group papers that he grades very harshly, so harshly in fact, that we all wonder why he even assigns them. He gives four extra credit assignments, they're easy if you write to please him, so do them! Avoid
Alan Fine was the worst professor I've had. Most lectures were spent listening to him talk about himself. Extremely narcissistic and a harsh grader. If you can avoid his section do it.
perAbsolutely horrible. Just teach yourself, and do well on group projects. He grades super harshly. Don't buy his book.
AVOID AT ALL COST. Fine is not a good teacher, and is the most self obsessed professor I have ever had. He bring in real life examples that don't actually help teach his point, but instead just come off as boasting about how much money he has made in business. He also is very hard to get ahold of, and his TAs aren't as helpful as you would want.
He's a good guy with good intentions but tends to ramble. I think he just gets excited about whatever it is that he's talking about, so he'll talk more without realizing that he's strayed away from the main topic. The harder you try to understand what he's telling you during lectures, the more confused you'll be. Trust me on this one.
Alan is a great professor, he really wants you to excel in his class. great feedbacks on my business plan. I would take his class again if I didn't graduate! TAKE HIM! 4 quizzes and time limit is 35 minutes, so you have to really have to study a bit. Some/most questions is what he said during class. I really enjoyed taking MGMT4170W with him.
It might've just been the class I took (MGMT 3045), but I think everyone in our section can agree that Prof. Fine made the short class extremely enjoyable. Great lectures that included interesting anecdotes and critical and interesting topics related to the course and current international issues. Open-note exams - great choice (for this course)!
Professor Fine is one of the most inspiring professors at all of CSOM. He interjects his own personal experiences into the topics and makes the lectures truly enriching. He also gives good insight into current affairs.
You can immediately tell Professor Fine understands the lecture material and has industry experience to back it up. The material would often lead him to go off on tangents which helped my understanding and made the course feel applicable and useful to the real world.
Professor Fine has very interesting lectures covering a lot of real world topics. The grading is fair, but you will have a decent amount of work to do, but it is quite fun.
Professor Fine often gave very unique perspectives on the lecture material and often would tie in foreign/current affairs into the lectures to give a good spin on things.
Mr. Fine is a very good teacher and he would have very interesting lectures. He would often go off on tangents, but I found them to be equally enriching. The class is a bit challenging, but definitely manageable.
While Alan is very knowledgeable, he tends to use his class as an opportunity to boast. His lectures are 50% content related to the course and 50% stories of his accomplishments. His tests are fairly easy, but the final project was a nightmare.
Fine is a very inspirational professor. It is clear he cares about his students and wants to see them succeed in their personal and professional lives. His lectures do tend to derail from the course content as he does like to talk about personal anecdotes, and success stories of business owners he knows.
Very good class and nice professor. Everything is graded based on 1 group case study and 2 midterms (both open-book). Offers a lot of extra credit at the end. Great class and is only half of the semester.
Alan really sparked my interest in Entrepreneurship. His lectures are very engaging and he tells a lot of stories that are relevant and inspiring. If you are serious about starting your own business, Alan is a great resource. I am taking his MGMT 4175w class now and am really enjoying it
Heard a lot of things about this professor, but gave him the benefit of the doubt. Should've listened to the reviews tbh. Spent the lectures rambling about unrelated topics, and when he actually did go through class content, he just read off the slides. Most of class is group work, but he is very picky and wants the assignments done his way.
Lectures can be hit-or-miss, with the professor sometimes getting sidetracked. However, the assignments and exams are manageable with proper preparation using resources like the textbook and Unstuck AI. Overall, an average experience.
Really caring professor that aims to keep his class engaged. I personally don't pay attention to lectures in most of my classes, but Professor Fine did an amazing job of grasping my attention and making me engaged throughout the class. Honestly a gem of a professor.
Grading is completely arbitrary. You can follow the instructions exactly and still get penalized for things never mentioned. Also, you're forced to come up with some venture and then get a bad grade for it not being feasible. Like, of course it's not; we created it in an hour between four people who don't want to work together.
