Interesting subject matter but was hard for me bc its just a midterm and final that determine your grade and no homework to kind of bring it up. you have to do 6 experiments with graduate students or you get dropped a lettter grade. those are easy. if you are a good reader and soak up a lot by what people say you should do fine. im not so i gota D
Fantastic teacher. I learned SO much from. Yes, inappropriate, but therefore incredibly funny. Go to the lectures. He gives you a fair game sheet (concepts that you'll need to know), and basically.. all I did was go through that and study everything off of it for the mid/final and I got an A. This class was sort of common sense to me though
Wonderful teacher! I looked forward to lecture everytime. He is a great speaker and presented material in a manner that was very easy to follow. I missed at least 5 lectures and several sections and pulled off a C+ grade, but if I had put in more effort (first quarter freshman) I believe this class could have been an easy A. Highly reccomend!
If 1 person out of 800 gets 100% on the midterm or final= no curve. This class requires a lot of reading. And only 1 midterm and 1 final.
He exalts such great charisma and knows how to keep you focused on his lectures with his random anecdotes and jokes. I love the level of comfort he established with the students. TA sections were kind of pointless, and I didn't really like having to do the experiments that took six hours of my time...but Overall, a great experience!
Awesome!
In lecture he covers a lot of information you should really go. sections have been very helpful because they cover extra things he didn't in class. The only problem i had was with the wording on the exam. I suggest studying the items on the fair game sheet as soon as you get it and focusing on that for the exams rather than doing all the reading
I love this man!
BY FAR ONE OF MY FAVORITE PROFESSORS HERE AT UCSB. He cares SO much! he makes lectures fun, hes funny and psych 103 content is so interesting! took him for 101 also. Wish he lectured for more classes, he's amazing. DO NOT LEAVE UCSB WITHOUT TAKING ONE OF HIS CLASSES!
AMAZING PROFESSOR! He got me interested in Psych, take any class with Fridlund, hes great! His tests are very straight forward so long as you put in the work to study the lectures
Fridlund is a God Amongst Men!
Never replied to emails, but opened the floor for questions in class or after class. Psychopathology alone is interesting, but Fridlund made it so much better with his funny anecdotes, portrayals, and I like the way he used current events and popular culture to get his point across. Gave out study guides and stood by them, so this was easy and fun!
hes a cool professor, one mid term one final multiple choice test are difficult i got a D but i learn alot, its alot of reading the subjectas interesting but like i said the test are hard
I had Fridlund for psych 1 and fell in love with his style of teaching. I was incredibly excited for psych 103, but he completely disappointed me. He spent too long on some sections (depression), and not nearly enough on others (alcoholism). His tests are anything but straightforward, actually, and I'm a good student. Go to lecture & study the text
Great professor. HILARIOUS. Easy if you work hard. Go to lecture, and instead of taking notes print out the fair game sheet prior to class and take notes on that. It's the best way to go. Had him for Psy1 (into to psych) and Psy103 (psychopathology). You're going to love his witty and sexual humor, and not to mention the fact he is very engaging.
Amazing class, amazing professor, amazing TA. I loved everything about this course. It's moderately easy. Read the book, take good lecture notes, study hard (definitely use the fair-game sheet), and you'll get a good grade. Tests pretty straight forward - just make sure you know the materials.
AMAZING professor. He makes class so fun. I loved going to all these lectures. I am a first year just getting started and this was the perfect class to take. You must read and study to get a good grade but he is awesome. Can't wait to take another class with him
I took this class pass/no pass. It was a lot harder than I thought it would be; I figured I would just go and take the tests. But you really have to study if you want to do well. The class is very interesting so I don't regret it. 1 midterm and 1 final along with 6 research credits you have to fulfill. Very interesting class with great teaching.
This class was SIGNIFICANTLY harder than I initially thought. 1/2 of the test material is only found in the book. Study exactly what is on the fair game sheet. Only 1 midterm and 1 final which are very difficult. Only 5% of the class got an A.
i love this class and the professor even though it was harder than expected. fridlund is hilarious and makes the class so much fun. plus the subject is very interesting. i recommend taking this class just do the reading and pay attention since grades consist of just final and midterm.
I WAS ONE POINT AWAY FROM AN A-, AGGHHHGHGHGHGHGHGH
This was a pretty difficult class. A lot of information and terms you have to remember for the tests (around 200 terms & concepts). The professor is really funny and tries to relate to the IV crowd, which is a nice touch.
Lectures had good material, LOTS of reading in this class, though so be prepared. Thoroughly enjoyed this class.
Really knows what he is talking about. I got an A but did all the reading and studied exactly what was on the fair game sheets. Really interesting general knowledge class I would recommend.
Extremely interesting class! It's hard, but very interesting. He does a good job of keeping the class entertaining. There is a lot of reading and you should definitely stay on top of it if you want a good grade in the class. Tests are some what difficult. Highly advise taking this class.
AMAZING PROFESSOR! hilarious and keeps things interesting. it can be a difficult class but with the fair game sheet and some studying, not bad!
Love him. So funny. He doesn't care if you go to lecture, but you will WANT to. If you dont take psych with fridlund you are making a mistake. The tests are a fair test of how much you studied
He is a very funny teacher and tries to make class really interesting, and presents the info pretty clearly. But, he doesn't go over everything in class, so you must do the reading (must attend class too). Fill out the fair game sheet well and you should do pretty well in the class although the exams aren't that easy.
Fridlund is one of my favorite professors at SB. Grade is dependent on two tests, but gives you a fair game sheet which you should use exclusively as your study guide. If you know everything on the fair game sheet, you should get an A
Honestly one of my favorite teachers at SB so far! He makes class so interesting and fun to attend. Although lectures aren't mandatory, and neither are sections, you should still attend if you want to receive a good grade. Every now and then he'll throw in a joke or two and has the whole lecture hall learning and laughing at the same time!
Great guy! Very passionate about his teaching. Tests were really easy as long as you know the fair game sheet like the back of your hand. Lectures were always very exciting. This is for sure a must take. Lectures didn't really follow reading so that was frustrating at times but lectures were always entertaining and funny.
Fridlund gives very funny lectures, but goes off on tangents a lot. You have to do all the reading and teach yourself the majority of the material. The midterm and final are the only scores for the class so it can either make or break you. Attendance is not mandatory and section is kind of pointless.
The reading, the lecture and the section all have different information so you must be dedicated in all the areas. HE IS A GREAT PROFESSOR it's pointless not to go to lecture, they are so fun! The test focused on the little things that I didn't think id be tested on so, study EVERYTHING on the fair game sheet, also record lecture, if u want that A.
It's not necessary at all to go to either section or lecture if you want to do well in this class. You WILL want to go to lecture/section though because this class is a blast. Fridlund is an excellent teacher and some of the section topics are pretty fun. Kick back and enjoy because this is how intro classes should be.
Lectures are very fun and interesting. Tests include information from the lectures, readings, and section. Section attendance is not mandatory. Lectures are posted online, but Fridlund's enthusiasm makes lectures very enjoyable. My favorite class so far.
This class was awesome. I wish I would have studied a little harder for the midterm because I could have had an A. Make sure you know everything on the Fair Game Sheet and you will be golden. Make sure you know examples and not just the definition. I always enjoyed going to class.
Fridlund is a GREAT teacher! The class is really interesting and the reading isnt bad. Just go to class and pay attention, its enjoyable and you'll do well
This class is worth taking, if you enjoy learning about psych disorders. However, he talks mainly about medicines and goes on tangent. I went to class (didn't do the reading) and I was able to do fairly well. The tests can be semi difficult because sometimes there seems like more than one answer. Some unexpected questions, more studying won't help.
He is the most entertaining professor I have ever had. He seems to really enjoy teaching and makes himself available for questions after class where he fully answers anything you ask. Material is pretty straight forward, and no surprises on the tests. Final was harder than midterm
Great class. Fridlund knew what he was talking about and seemed to enjoy the topics. I didn't take notes but just listened during lecture to really learn it, and then for tests you just answer everything on the Fair game sheet and you should be fine. Barely used the book, usually only for elaboration.
He is an amazing professor and one of the best ones I have had at UCSB. Very entertaining and is always telling jokes. The tests are hard and I didn't think the fair game sheet helped that much and there is too much reading but I do recommend taking this class.
Loved Fridlund. He loves what he does which makes listening to lecture extremely enjoyable. He's very clear on what he will test on so it's hard not to get a good grade if you atleast try. He's one of those teachers you have to take atleast once.
Fridlund is way overrated. He is overly sarcastic, nearly sardonic in his attitude creating a very bleak view of psychology in my opinion. The class was not as interesting as I would have liked, especially with all the hype around Fridlund. A character, but not the perfect professor by any means.
Fridlund is awesome! Lectures were very interesting, just print out the notes ahead of time off of gauchospace! As long as you knew everything on the fair game sheet, tests were easy.
i did not even buy the book, and i still got a B. The lectures were fun, if you are interested.
AMAZING professor. So lively, funny, and active. Awesome guy. tough class though, it didnt seem hard at the moment but I got a B, which is not acceptable for me, but i loved the class and LOVED the professor
grade based on midterm and final. both exams are hard... watch out!
Fridlund is a really cool guy and is funny but goes on a lot of tangents in lecture that do not help you for the midterm or final at all. You really have to read the book to get a lot of the information because he doesnt go over it. Lectures can be boring as well. Midterm and Final fairly difficult, Fair game sheet doesnt help as much as it should.
Awesome class! Fridlund makes lectures awesome. Do the reading and go to lecture and you will do well, study well and getting an A is easy. Section is pointless but you should go, they usually say something of importance you can't get elsewhere
Fridlund is a God. Material is very interesting and he conveys it that way. Lectures are extremely interesting and Fridlund is LMFAO hilarious. Mid-terms and finals are slightly challenging but if you study you will get a B or better. Just go to lectures, take notes and study for the exams and you have a great PSY 1 experience.
He is a great teacher. Although the class is difficult, he teaches the material in a comical and interesting way. He is very knowledgable of psychology. Good class
Very easy to understand, delivers very interesting lectures. The TAs from my quarter were very helpful as well and even put review sessions for the students. The course grading system, however, only allows you to lose points. This may harm some people but overall, not bad class. Fridlund is a cool guy!
Easy class. Fridlund is funny and mildly interesting, but after the midterm it's pretty much pointless to go to lecture. Study fairgame sheet and you will be fine.
Fridlund is funny, down to earth, and makes class interesting. I did bad on the midterm but was able to ace the final getting an overall good grade in the class. The subject I find very interesting and it helps when the professor gives his own experiences making it more interesting
Very charismatic and knowledgeable on the subject. Study the fair game sheet and you WILL get at least a B. Section is just another lecture. Midterm is 50 questions and the nueroscience part is a bit difficult, but there's not too many questions on it.Final was 75 questions and waaay easier than the midterm.Take this class!!!
Great Prof! Really interesting course. You should go to all lectures if you choose not to read. He gives midterm and final outlines, so you don't necessarily have to read everything, just the stuff you know you're gonna get tested on. I strongly recommend this class!
Fridlund is awesome. He's very charismatic and able to hold your attention. Intro to psych was quite basic but very interesting. Thoroughly recommend this class!
I love Fridlund!!! Amazing teacher and very interesting class! Make sure you understand the material before going into tests, simply knowing the definition isn't enough.
Amazing professor he keeps you engaged, is very funny, and helps you out with study guides
LOVE FRIDLUND!!! Enjoyed his class so much! Funny guy, good to get to know! Study for the tests and you should be good to go!
Honestly, the single most overrated professor at UCSB. As long as you can memorize something like 100-150 key terms before the midterm and final, you will be golden. Pretty disappointing class overall though
People take the class because psychology is interesting. However, most don't understand the commitment this class takes. Your grade is made of only two exams. Both exams are difficult and you need to know the fair game sheet extremely well in order to get an A. No curve but you get a few free points at the end.
Favorite lecture so far at UCSB. Great GE since you can take it pass/no pass out of the major. I probably should have...
His class is unorganized. He was always behind two lectures because all he cared about was making the audience laugh. The fair game sheet is helpful but he uses different synonyms for the words so it can be confusing. HIs tests are also worded to be confusing. I would avoid this class. He does a horrible job with the class curve
His class is a lot of memorization. Wants you to know the DSM and medicine. I expected a class on mental disorders not the medicine and categories for them. The midterm was terrible. Hardly anything to do with the fair game sheet. No real concepts from lecture. Do not take this class. You have a choice at something better.
Section is not mandatory. Lectures are easy to skip and the power points are online. Grade is based purely on midterm and final. There are study guides for the midterm and final that are very long but if you know it you will do well. I did essentially no work until the night before the tests and got a B.
do not take this class. when you take psych 1, you are required to do 5 psychological studies or else your grade is lowered. he uses students to get data for his psych experiments and the grading and exams are completely unfair.
Had him for both psy 1 and 103. Both easy classes, provided you study the terms on the fair game sheet. Tests were mainly made up of material from the slides. I read the book mainly for clarification, but didn't do all the reading.
Fridlund is one of the best professors i've ever had. He really knows how to lecture and keep students interested and the material is really interesting as well. Tests are somewhat tricky but just know everything on the fair game sheet and you will be fine. Take this class if you need a GE Fridlund is amazing!
Though his lectures are pretty interesting, he presents the material in a pretty anecdotal way, which makes it hard to discern what it is that he wants you to take away from his little spiels. Other than that, it's a pretty easy class. Just a midterm and final though--my classes average on them was roughly 71-75% so study hard!
he was the best! made lectures enjoyable, even though i did dose off a few times. very cool guy!! i will never forget Ellens Dance Dare! psych major because of his class!
Fun class! Even though attendance isn't mandatory, his charm will make you want to come anyways. However some things I did note is that he goes off on so many tangents that won't be tested so you don't really feel like paying attention...lol and he was always behind on his lectures. But other than that, the class was a great GE. Make sure to read.
I think Fridlund is overrated. His lectures focus too much on making students laugh and he goes on tangents that are impossible to take notes on. He doesn't really teach by the textbook, but his lectures are unclear, so it's hard to study for exams. He's a nice guy, but not the best professor.
Fridlund is definitely overrated. His lectures are boring as hell even though he is an interesting guy. The class is very vague and grade is based purely on midterm and final which are both tricky tests. Final is easier though. I would not recommend it if you are not dedicated.
Fridlund could be funny sometimes, but he goes all over the place on his lectures. Basically, study those fairgame sheets ASAP! Your grades are made up of your midterm/final. His exams are tricky, but if you study well, you'll be fine. Know examples of each term/concept because thats how the exam is formed. Good Luck! I ended up with a B.
This is a great class with an exceptional professor! I didn't miss a lecture because he is so passionate about psychology and it showed! This class covers a lot of topics and is not hard if you put in reasonable effort. Misterm and final were harder than I thought they would be.. just make sure you know the concepts of the terms from fairgame sheet
Very entertaining professor! He doesn't just read out of the book and comes up with interesting facts that actually relate well to the lecture. Highly recommend taking his classes.
He is an entertaining professor &I love how he relates everything back to daily life. Although he is interesting and hilarious, there are those handful of lectures that are too boring to bear. Your grade is made up of ONLY mid/final test grades! Only take this class if youll study the fair game sheet like crazy!!
He is a very wonderful lecturer. He is funny and keeps things interesting. He practically gives you the test witht the fair game sheet so its super easy to get a good grade. I would recommend this class!
this class was intersting and fridlund was really entertaining. the tests are kinda tricky though
Requires a lot of reading to be successful. I got a D on the midterm, but stepped it up and got an A+ on the final. Readings make a huge difference, lots of material to memorize. GREAT LECTURER.
Really entertaining professor. Attendance is not mandatory, but I actually looked forward to the lectures. He really knows what he is talking about. The midterm and final are extremely straightforward. If you study the slightly lengthy fair game sheets, you will know literally everything that's on the tests. Definitely a class worth taking.
I enjoyed his class so much that I'm changing my major.
FRIDLUND IS THE BEST. He's hilarious, engaging, concise and informing. TAKE THIS CLASS. I think it should be required. Just study the fair games sheet and you'll be solid.
Alan is a wonderful professor. He makes lecture like a show and he is so laid back. Although he may be chill and fun, I can't say the same about his tests. They are super hard and very thorough. Loved his class, but if you're not on top of the reading and lectures, success is impossible.
class grade is based on 40% midterm and 60% final. Everything on those two tests can be found on his FAIR GAME sheet. If you know everything on the fair game sheet, you will get an A+ like I did. Very cool guy. HINT: use the index of the book to fill in the fair game sheet (it saves your time reading)
He's funny, but it kinda gets old. Go to lecture even though its not mandatory, it'll help you grasp alot of the concepts. And just study and you'll do well on the tests.
Funny guy, BUT, his lectures are not very informative. He provides a fair game sheet but the terms are vague and hard to find in text. Ur grade depends entirely on midterm and final which he does not help prepare you for. Lectures are kind of pointless. This class is what ev.
BEST PROFESSOR I HAD AT UCSB!! One MT worth 40% and one Final worth 60%, the tests are M/C and A thru D with only straight forward questions! Study sheet given for both, very interesting lectures and materials too! You should get an A like I did if you read the textbook and study the lectures, and didn't take up all my time, decent amount of work.
He was not a good lecturer. He focuses more on trying to make the first years laugh then he does on actually teaching the subject. He goes off on tangents instead of teaching, such complaining about having to pay to repair his car for twenty minutes. He spends too long on easier subjects and not enough on everything.
As long as you go to the lectures, take good notes, and study for a good amount of time, the class is not difficult. Fridlund is a fantastic professor and makes learning interesting. Very straightforward, as long as you know everything on his fair game sheet, you're good to go.
Fridlund was an overall great teacher, he provided good information but you actually have to pay attention to understand. The fair game sheet makes studying for exams a lot easier. He uses 3 different media (lecture, section, book) to teach his class and you HAVE to use all three because you learn different material in each one.
Exploitative teacher. He exclusively teaches 800+ size classes to get mass amounts of students to buy his really expensive textbooks. Takes advantage of Freshman this way by convincing them they always need the most recent addition, which comes out every year so there are no used copies. Doesn't teach small classes or ones without a book he wrote
Great professor, you could tell he really enjoyed what he was teaching and had a passion for it. However, it is a LOT of work and a LOT of studying, so be prepared! Make sure to go to lecture and keep up with the reading week by week.
Take this class! The professor is a cool guy, the class itself is interesting and he gives you the tools to pass and constantly reminds you, especially after the midterm. Definitely study in groups, but you only really have to pull it off both before the midterm and final. Do the readings based off the fair game sheet, go to lecture, you'll do fine
Take this class! It's very interesting and he gives you the tools to pass and will remind you throughout the quarter, especially after the midterm. Definitely study in groups, but mainly before the midterm and final, because that made the difference. Just go to lecture, do the reading based off his fair game sheet, go to section, and you will pass!
Great class to take. The readings at first seem daunting, but you only need to read the topics that correspond to the fair game sheet. DOING ALL OF THE READING IS A WASTE OF TIME. All you need to know is on the FG sheet. Also I would recommend going to lecture because he gives great examples that help you memorize key terms.
He is a very funny teacher, but his lectures were very pointless. He goes on random tangents in class which takes up a lot of the time. Start on the fair game sheet early and know what is on it in more detail.
Fridlund is such a GREAT professor! I definitely recommend this class. Study the Fair Game sheet for the midterm and final and you'll be fine. Absolutely loved this class!
Aplia gives you 10 course points out of about 250 points possible(but he will curve the class in the end so the total might be even less. STUDY THE FAIRGAME SHEET. study all of it and make sure you understand it & not just memorize the definition. Lectures & sections are important because it covers things not in the textbook!. Midterm 80% Final 95%
Really interesting class. Lecture is very entertaining but sometimes not too related to the material. Study the fair game sheet, I didn't study, never opened the text book but attended lectures and sections and ended up with a c (would have gotten a b if I did the research credit and got 2 or 3 more questions right on the final)
Interesting lecturer. I thought he was funny. The course material was interesting too though. The reading is not necessary, but is helpful.
Absolutely LOVED this class and teacher. If you go to lectures and complete the study guide it is an easy A, and an interesting one! I'm not a psych major so I was worried, but Fridlund made the class so enjoyable. His tests were fair and he was great to talk to at office hours as well. He really cares about students, and it shows.
Lectures can be a bit boring, but Fridlund share's fun personal stories which makes it tolerable. Slightly annoying that grade is based only on midterm, final, research requirement and extra credit. Readings aren't mandatory, but helpful. Overall a good class and not too difficult as long as you study Fair Game sheet.
Frilund's an awesome professor. His lectures keep you engaged, and the class is extremely basic: JUST STUDY THE FAIR GAME SHEET. The readings aren't necessary, but they are very interesting. Great class over all. It's easy if you try!
He is a bad professor in my opinion. Amazing person and his lectures are fun but like he's not very helpful when it comes to your tests. FAIR GAME SHEET i mean you can study it but the tests are way harder.
Fridlund is a really great lecturer. The midterm is way harder than the final but if you study the fair game sheet and make sure you know the readings well, you will do great. getting an A is attainable if you attend section, lectures, do the FG sheet and study. The section about Evolution and Darwin isn't covered in the textbook, only in class.
Such a hard class, but very interesting. Would recommend taking if interested at all in Psychology. Midterm is slightly harder than the final, and the each exam as well as the entire class is curved. Fridlund will curse during lecture, which always gets a lot of laughs. DO NOT start studying for these exams the day before at ALL COSTS!!!
Study the fair game sheet and you'll be fine. Interesting class. Aplia and the textbook were helpful as well.
Fridlund is such a fun professor! His lectures tend to get irrelevant though, but his stories are really funny. Know all the terms on the Fair Game sheet. I mean it when I say you have to KNOW the terms. His tests do not test you on the terms' definitions but on their applications. Fill it out as the quarter progresses, and you're good to go!
Fridlund is not a very good teacher. The book is expensive and you can't buy an old one OR sell one back to the bookstore. Also it's not very useful. As a lecturer, his slides are confusing in layout and he adds demeaning comments to get people's attention. Not a good psych class.
Fridlund is not a great professor. The entire course was graded on a midterm and final, and then he makes you buy an $80 program (Aplia) for 5 stupid points.
Fridlund is very entertaining and his class is so interesting! Going to class is pretty important and skimming the book is always good to do! A lot of meds to memorize but overall a great class. Just attend and pay attention and you should be fine :)
Interesting lectures, he has a ton of interactive visual aids to help clarify topics. Like everyone else said, know the fair game sheet, not just memorize it. The midterm and final are multiple choice, but based off of concepts, not definitions. Get the Aplia book; it's only slightly more than the textbook plus it'll give you 5 extra points.
The man is absolutely bonkers in the best way possible. A lot of the material can be kind of dry and easy to mix up, but his personality definitely goes a long way in relaying the important pieces. I can see why this class may be difficult for non-psych majors, but it is an absolute must for anyone in a psychology-related field
I'm a 4th year biopsych student and this turned out to be one of my favorite classes. It was really interesting and you learn everything for the exams by going to class.
I took both Psych 1 and Psych 103 with Fridlund. He is actually the reason why I decided to be a psychology major. Absolutely brilliant man and is so charismatic; great lecturer. When you attend his lectures, you want to be his friend. He's absolutely awesome and his tests are solely based on what is taught in class. I received A's in both classes.
What more can be said about Fridlund? He's a master at what he does. Brilliant researcher and even better professor. It's a shame he doesn't teach a wider variety of courses. If I could take Fridlund for the rest of my required psych courses I would do so in a heartbeat. Take his classes you will not regret it. He's enriched my education immensely.
Fridlund is by far the best teacher I have ever had here at UCSB. The course is pretty easy and his fair game sheet is exactly what he uses on the midterms and final. He is hilarious, out going, and really has developed my love for psychology. I was contemplating failing the course on purpose so I could spend another quarter with him.
Concepts galore! Don't take this class if you're expecting to memorize definitions. The class consists of a midterm and final, both focusing on applications of concepts. KNOW the fair game sheet, and i mean know it!!! This class is only easy if youre willing to put in the time and effort as theres barely any curve.
Honestly, I thought Fridlund was the best speaker and that he was really in touch with the group of students he was teaching. The material is intriguing and although I only got a C (bombed the midterm) I would recommend this class to anyone. Really study, know everything on the fairgame sheet, and take notes in section and you should be fine.
Fridlund is a character in lecture, and he certainly makes the class entertaining. However, the textbook reading is basically useless, so just go to lecture and focus all your time on the fair game sheet (which basically includes every term every covered). The midterm was harder than the final -- Not an easy class. I studied and got a B+
Psych 1 was a difficult course, since it bases its entire grade on two difficult tests. But Professor Fridlund was an amazing professor, he was insightful and very funny. He made the most of this difficult class.
This class was really cool and I liked fridlund a lot. Your grade consists of your midterm and final and nothing else. Needless to say, it's really important to study. The final seemed easier than the midterm to me. His fair game sheet is pretty helpful, do the reading, and go to lecture.
He's a great professor overrall but his midterm is very tough! Don't study the night before for this class!! The final was a lot easier though
He's arrogant and condescending. There's one midterm and one final and they're both really hard. He makes you buy the latest edition of his textbook because he wants to make more money.
He had us buy $100+ online hw code. I bought the code bc it counts as 10% total grade. Somehow, there were few people messed up and did not pay for the codes, and he just decided to give everyone the HW grade. Sure it's great for those who did not pay for the code. But as someone who did pay $100 just for the online hw code, I AM PISSED OFF!
Alan is awesome! His lectures are pretty interesting and the fair-game sheets he posts for the midterm and final are super helpful, just make sure to fill them out as the quarter goes on so you don't have to fill it all out at the end. Sections are an hour and 15 and they don't take attendance, so they aren't super mandatory but def go to lecture.
Fridlund was one of the best professors I've ever had. He's the classic college professor, and he's passionate about what he teaches. I came into the class looking for GE credits but Fridlund made the class so interesting that I almost changed my major to Psych. One midterm and a final. No other grading criteria.
Fridlund is very engaging and makes the material interesting, but section is not devoted to helping you understand the material so much as learning more of it. Midterm distribution took about 15 mins. Sometimes he was late to lecture. The biggest problem is that your final grade is based on a difficult midterm and final. Do the research credits.
Prof Fridlund can be arrogant and condescending most of the time. He goes off topic really often and doesn't cover a lot of material on the midterm or final. Keep up with your reading and go to section. Lecture isn't very beneficial but it helps a bit. Don't procrastinate because this class has only two grades- a midterm and final.
lectures are enjoyable midterm was difficult but final was easy would recommend this class just make sure you always do the fair game sheet ahead of time and make sure you do the research credit ahead of time too
Fridlund is the best lecturer I have had so far. I didn't use the book or mindtap once, and I didn't join a study group like he recommends. He told us not to study with flashcards, but I did anyway and got an A-. Print out quizlet flashcards that follow the fair game sheet he gives you, be sure to Google the terms you do not understand well.
I would recommend this class bc it's interesting stuff and not a big commitment. I never went to section, but I did go to almost every lecture and took good notes. I recommend filling out the fair game sheet along the way (thru textbooklecture) and studying with people a couple times before each exam and you'll be fine. Midterm harder than final.
Fridlund was hilarious! He made psychology super fun and interesting. I would definitely take this class again. However, you have to make sure you read! And form a study group! He only gives two tests and that's your grade! If you aren't the studious or reader type, DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. Unless you have a major interest in this class.
Fridlund is a very funny engaging professor. His grading is based only off of the midterm and final so its important to study. You should pass though if you study everything off of the fair game sheet he provides for you. Don't neglect studying the textbook though, questions on the exam are there too and do the experiment stuff early!
I love his lecture style! He always makes lectures interesting despite how boring the materials are (esp the brain chapter). However, as many others mentioned, this class is 40% midterm and 60% final and that sucks. I got a C-in midterm, changed grading to pnp but got an A in the final so ended up with a B. Wish i never changed it.
Fridlund is my favorite professor at UCSB. There is only a midterm and a final. Midterm was tough, but final was easier (as long as you study). He gives a study guide (fairgame) for both the midterm and final. If you want to pass, then attend all lectures and sections, READ, and study the fairgame sheet!
Fridlund is a great lecturer and is passionate about psychology. No need to attend lecture because powerpoint are online. Absolutely no need for textbook. Test are very difficult and require A LOT of studying. Make sure to know fair game sheet inside and out
I love his lectures, he grades you on your mid-term and final so do well. Section doesn't count for participation, personally I didn't go. There were some questions on the tests that pertained to section only, so go. You absolutely need the text book, be prepared to read. If you don't read you won't get the tests.
This class was very interesting and Fridlund was a great lecturer. He certainly kept the class interesting. No need to buy the overpriced textbook, just go to lecture and print out the slides from gauchosapce. Make sure to keep up with the material and start review early to be successful
Great lecturer - very interesting. He posts slides online but going to lecture is worth it because there's a lot of information that isn't on there. I didn't do most of the reading but I did use the textbook when something was unclear. He's very clear about what will be on his tests - study the fair game sheets he provides and you'll do fine.
This is one of the best classes at UCSB. It is fascinating material and Fridlund is a great lecturer. He genuinely wants his students to learn and there are no tricks on his tests. Be sure to go to lecture, it will help you so much more than the book. Skim the book at the lib, don't bother buying it. DO THE FAIR GAME SHEETS if you want an A.
I'm so happy I took Fridlund again after taking Psych 1 with him. The material is very interesting, and attending lectures is essential for a good grade. Go over the fair game sheet, study the slides too, and read the book for topics not included in the lectures. You have to put in work for the tests, but it's totally doable.
I would highly recommend this class but only if you have time to devote to it. Material is super interesting and as long as you keep up with the reading you can afford to skip class a few times. Fridlund is very clear and has a unique sense of humor, but tests are pretty tricky so its necessary to know the material well, not just memorize it.
PSY 1 with Fridlund was my favorite class this quarter. His lectures are in-depth and entertaining. I skimmed the textbook to look up key terms on the fair game sheet (it's posted on Gauchospace - use it!), but other than that I hardly read it. As long as you understand the concepts on the fair game sheet, you will do fine.
Fridlund's lectures consisted of him talking about himself and his life instead of the material. Rather than teaching, he simply gave example after example, without ever really explaining definitions. His ego overshadowed what could've been a good class. Don't take with him, especially if you're a freshman, it'll be tough to pass.
This class has a lot to read. Start to read during first week and do the fair game sheet as early as possible!!!!!! Not recommend for internationals(especially non native speakers) His midterm are tricky and someone you could not tell the difference between answers. Lectures are really interesting. Fridlund is a nice guy too.
The class can be hard and it covers a lot of material, but his lectures are amazing! He loves the subject and he loves to teach. He is hilarious and keeps you awake during the lectures. Quizzes and tests can be a bit hard but doing the readings help a lot. Fair grading and great TAs. Loved the class
Go to lecture and you'll get at least a B. Plus his lectures are super interesting. Only thing is, don't waste your time on Mindtap.
Fridlund is an excellent lecturer. I looked forward to lectures because they were full of jokes and stories which related to what we're learning. The class was very, very hard though. I went to every lecture and did every reading but still didn't recognize many of terms on the midterm/ final. The class was disorganized but entertaining.
Fridlund is the type of guy that you want to have a beer with. His lectures may be funny, but it's obvious he knows what he talking about. Has the tendency to go off on tangents that are at times only vaguely related to course material. Midterm is tough; lots of bio/neuroscience. Final is a piece of cake. Study the fair game sheet for exams.
He gives you the materials you need to study. To pass, and probably do well, READ the book assignments, go to LECTURE, study what is on the FAIR GAME SHEET, and you will do fine.
Fridlund's really into what he's teaching and you can tell he has fun doing it. Cool guy overall, very kind and friendly, but he's also "tough love" in the way you really have to pull your weight to try to get a decent grade in the class. Would highly recommend him and his class if you're interested in getting your feet wet in psychology.
I took PSY 1 Spring 2014, so this is a little late. Fridlund is an interesting professor; you either love him or hate him. He's been teaching Psych 1 for a while and knows how to keep the audience engaged with the lecture. The midterm and final were fairly straightforward. Good "Intro to College" GE.
HARDEST MIDTERM, EASY FINAL! TRY TO PASS THOSE SECTION QUIZZES BECAUSE THEY CAN MAKE OR BREAK YOUR GRADE!
Great class and great professor. Make sure you attend every lecture and READ READ READ. Make good use of your fair-game sheet (fill it in as you do readings and attend class) as it literally tells you everything you need to know for the test. Make sure you do well on the section quizzes. As long as you keep up with the work you'll do fine!
Fridlund is a very funny professor, passionate about psychology but gets too off topic. There is only a final, midterm, and four 5 point quizzes to make up your grade. Midterm was extremely difficult, final was easier. Do not take this class as a freshman during your first quarter!
Dont take psych 1 your first quarter at SB. Being honest right now youll probably get a C, or a B/B+ if you get lucky. Dont get me wrong its an amazing class and incredible teacher but its not worth the GPA kill so soon. Your grade is basically only 2 tests about conceptual material (book and lectures) and that is it. Just wait or something..
Fridlund is super knowledgeable and an amazing lecturer. The course material is tough and you need to keep up with reading and do the fair game sheets if you want to pass. Recommend going to all lectures, taking notes, and doing ALL of the reading. ALL.
Fall quarter 2015. I took AP psych in HS (textbook and mindtap never used because of prior knowledge). Lectures are kinda fast and Fridlund tries to make the topics interesting (his dad jokes). Your grade is dependent on quizzes, midterm, and final. It might be difficult if it's your first psych class ever so be ready. Class average was a C
I loved his lectures and they were the best I've had so far. However, this class is not a show-and-pass class, unless you have photograhic memory. The midterm and final add up to 92% of your grade, and the other 8% are section quizzes, which is mandatory to attend. If you have the time for a more demanding GE class, I recommend it.
His lectures are never boring. However, both the midterm and final have many tricky questions. Also, Go to lecture. Many questions are derived from his lecture, NOT THE PDT! If you read and memorize thoroughly from the readings, and go to the lecture and pay attention, you might have a great chance to have a B at least.
Didn't go to more than 3 or 4 class which I now regret only because he's interesting and funny. Also I missed a few sections, didn't read the book, and starting studying the weekend before the midterm and final. MAKE FLASHCARDS for everything on the fair game sheets even though he tells you not to. Get a previous year's test. HE REPEATS QUESTIONS!
I loved this class! He is my favorite professor at UCSB, but this is not an easy class. I studied very hard for the midterm but got a C- on it, I then studied like crazy for final and got an A. Go to lecture, he explains everything so well and gives very useful and memorable examples. Don't just memorize defs, his tests are more on application.
My friends and I absolutely loved Fridlund. He was always interesting with his lectures, and it wasn't too hard to stay awake even though it was an hour and fifteen minutes long. However, his lectures are more like long stories rather than things pertaining to the tests. You HAVE to read the book - lecture isn't really that helpful.
You really do have to study for this class. Make sure to study the fair game sheet for the midterm and final. Overall, this was one of the best classes I've taken so far at UCSB.
GREAT PROFESSOR, I LOVE HIM SO MUCH!!!!!!!! I would definitely recommend this class, I never experienced a single boring moment. Fridlund is very passionate and makes the lectures fun. You can tell he genuinely cares about his students. Although a little tough, amazing class overall
He is charming, funny, but the test is very tricky. I though I did fairly well, but in truth, I got a pretty low grade.
Hardest class ever. Difficult and confusing tests - it's like he purposely sets you up to fail. Condescending during office hours too. You follow and do the study guide? Not helpful - You'll do average at best in the class. Expensive book by the way and MAKES you get the current and school edition.
Very funny and engaging during lecture! I did not do any of the reading and just attended lecture and pulled a C+ while also barely studying for tests. If you put the effort into it you should be able to pull a good grade.
I see a lot of reviews talking about how tricky he is, and he's really not. Super straightforward questions. He's lecture heavy, so if you don't go to class or be really good friends with someone that does, you won't do well. I paid attention most of the time, skimmed the book, and memorized the fair game sheet. Easy 96%
Fridlund's class was by far my favorite class I've taken here at UCSB! He is very clear and descriptive about his subject so the material wasn't super difficult to comprehend if you're new to this subject (like me). The only reason I got the grade I got was because I didn't study as much as I should have so that was my fault. Overall, he's great!
His lecture sessions are lengthy but filled with important information, so make sure you attend lecture. Use the book and complete the fair game sheet. He has one midterm and a final.
Great class and professor. His tests are pretty hard but if you study lecture notes and skim book you can do very well. Attendance is not that important because he posts everything. However, he says things in class that are not online.
Fridlund is the man. He's funny, smart, and a great lecturer. Beware: his tests are hard if you don't know how to study for them. Literally go through the fair-game sheet and use his lecture slides, posted on GS. The slides are the key.
Loved this class! Midterm and final are pretty difficult not to many people do well. He gives you a fair game sheet about a week before the tests. Sections are long but interesting. You watch videos most of the time. Funny guy would definitely recommend to a friend and would take this professor again.
Prof Fridlund is a funny guy who really cares about teaching engaging material. His tests are not hard as long as you know all the topics on the fair game sheet. Read the chapters in the textbook if you want an A+. Loved this class.
Prof Fridlund is very interesting and passionate about the topic. But, he goes off topic for almost all of lecture. The midterm only covered parts of the fair game sheet so was a waste of time trying to learn everything. Questions on the test are super confusing. Not an easy class even if you do all the readings, study and go to all the classes.
An amazing teacher that exposes students to new ways of thinking. Everyone should take this class even if it's pass/no pass to get the full experience at UCSB. The tests are really hard but the class is worth taking even if you get a low grade.
Professor Fridlund is quite the character. He jokes around a lot during lecture and can sometimes be rude. You occasionally have to try not to take what he says seriously. I find that he makes the lectures more interesting and he tends to sway away from topics and tells stories.
Ernest and hilarious. Willing to push unpopular opinions for the sake of a more well-rounded learning experience. Passionate about the material, but also hella chill. Not too challenging a course, but extremely captivating lectures.
Alan is a fantastic teacher. I really enjoyed his lectures. He made the subject interesting. However, he expects us to know way too much material for the midterm and final. Sections weren't helpful as they just added more subject matter that didn't tie into lecture. Unless you're a psych major or have a fairly light class load, I wouldn't take this
The layout of this class makes no sense; one often gets the feeling that Fridlund wants to make it as difficult as possible for students to access and synthesize the information. Lectures are absolutely useless, you won't learn anything that pertains to the current topic, or even to the course overall. Readings are digital and painful to navigate.
Great prof love him a lot
I absolutely loved Psych 1. Professor Fridlund is engaging and comedic. It's a good idea to sit towards the front of the lecture in order to not lose focus. The lectures are MANDATORY and 70% of the tests come directly from the lectures. I highly recommend taking this course.
This class was very interesting, however as great of a guy as Fridlund is, he spends most of his time reading the lecture verbatim. In order to get an A extreme effort is required. Attendance is not required for lecture or section, but recommended for section.
Professor Fridlund's class was difficult, be prepared to read. The class was graded on a point system rather than %, & relied on a midterm and final. After bombing the midterm I had to grind to pass, but definitely manageable as long as you listen to his study suggestions! Lectures were extremely entertaining and interesting, would highly recommend
Professor Fridlund was an extremely cultured and insightful man. His class has lots of reading and attending lectures is very recommended. His grading system may seem intimidating at first but in the end it isn't too difficult at all. The midterm is pretty difficult even if you study but the final is very easy if you study the fair game sheet.
Probably one of the easier classes out there since he gives you what's going to be on the test (fair game sheet). It's all about knowing the terms on that sheet, no tricks to it. Quizzes can be the difference b/w an A and a B so study for those. Overall, lectures were funny and engaging but most of the info you need are in the readings.
Fridlund is informative, funny, & everything you can ask for in a great professor. Go to lecture, they're hilarious & 70% of test material--also sometimes his dog visits so sit up front. Lecture is never a bore bc everything is so interesting. Graded by a few things but he gives a fair game sheet! Study EVERYTHING on that sheet and you'll be fine!
Don't take this class if you're looking for a easy GE, not a Psych major, or won't be putting your full effort into it. 4 quizzes, 1 midterm, 1 final, 6 research participation requirements. It's difficult, but if you study everything on the Fairgame Sheet then you'll be fine. The midterm was a lot harder for me than the final.
He cares too much about his lectures not being boring tends to barely discuss test material, so you'll have to read a lot, and just pay attention when he mentions fair-game terms. Midterm average 70%, final average 79%. Quizzes are on random facts, hard to study for. Sections cover material not in lecture, no time for review. Overall bad class.
I loved Fridlund! His lectures were entertaining, he was very clear on what he expected from his students, and he cares about his students' success. YOU WON'T PASS UNLESS YOU DO THE READING. Tests are challenging but doable. My only complaint is that I finished the class with less than 1% below an A, and he wouldn't round the grade for me.
I didn't mind the class at first, it seemed like it would be something I would enjoy. I did the 6 hours of research right away and always studied for the quizzes. I had to miss the midterm for a death in my family and he gave a CRAZY make up midterm exam. This class is definently not an easy GE. You must read and keep caught up.
Fridlund was hilarious and made every lecture worth going to, however his class isn't easy if you don't put in the effort. Memorizing all the terms on the fair game sheet won't be enough. You have to understand how to apply the terms and read the book.
Everyone should take Psychopathology with Fridlund before graduating UCSB. Seriously - he's such an engaging professor and forces you interact with the realities of mental illnesses. I can't commend his teaching style enough. Course-wise, it's one of the more difficult psychology classes because there's more reading, but it's 100% worth it. TAKE IT
I loved Fridlund! His psych 1 class was very engaging and he makes his lectures interesting and funny. The class is very difficult because it is so much material and so so much reading but if you put in the work, actually do the readings, and make sure you understand the fair game sheet then you will be fine! Also, attend section.
Prof Fridlund is very charismatic and funny. Lectures are entertaining and informational. He's very nice to talk to during office hours. The class itself is very reading-heavy -- if you read, you'll get a good grade. Overall a challenging but fun GE to take.
LOVED this class. he manages to keep an 800 person lecture hall laughing and engaged. definitely had to study hard to pass but it was worth it. graded on mostly midterm and final. go to lecture/do reading from the beginning. learned that the hard way after doing bad on midterm, but did way better on final. AMAZING PROF!
His lectures are interesting, but he goes on SO MANY TANGENTS that he needs to make up for lost time by rushing through some of the important stuff, so it gets annoying. Attendance isn't required, but definitely recommended. The textbook goes into further detail of what is discussed in lecture, but he rests on a lot of random things from lec too
This class was definitely challenging. Only two things in grade book are midterm and final and the questions are VERY tricky. The class is interesting and the knowledge you gain from it is important. Would recommend if you are willing to work hard! Overall I enjoyed this class but wished it was a little more possible to get an A
Class is great, but getting an A must take 100% of your time and dedication. I went to almost every class, and read most of the material. Filled out his entire fair game worksheet, and still got a B. Exams are tricky, I really thought I would get an A. In the end I'm not sure what he was looking for. Even gong over mistakes with TA didnt help much.
Go to class so that you can hear the material, and then when you go over it it's already familiar to you & read before class. 82 on the midterm, curved up got 84. I studied every day for 3 weeks for the final. Got an 88, curved up I got an A, he THEN curved the whole class. I got 92 which he gave me a sold A for. No other teacher curves like him.
Very difficult Class! I did the fair game sheet and I studied throughout the course. this class ruined my GPA. I got a C (and only C in my UD career). I was super dedicated and knew the material very well. The wording of his exams was very confusing. He made a super curve, but wish he didn't. I would've liked to retake this class.
Very difficult class yet very inspirational professor, took this class made me understand that there is no easy short cut to get a good grade. Follow his suggestion at the beginning of the course and you will succeed.
Clear, informative and entertaining lectures. Yes, he is one of those professors that has probably been telling the same joke to every class for years, but nevertheless, they are funny jokes. He provides many resources and loves taking questions and participation. If you study, use online resources and go to class, you will pass with flying colors.
The lectures are really fun and he is very inspiring but the fair game sheet he provides will not prepare you adequately for the tests. The tests are really hard and that is all of your grade. Great class just very difficult
Amazing professor and amazing lecture, just take it!!
I got 60 on midterm when I used flash cards to prepare the fair game sheet and read some textbook. The midterm is harder than final. He gave us 44 extra pts for final. Great hilarious lecturer. The stuff I learned are pretty useful and fun!
This class can be difficult if you don't put the work in. He basically tells you how to pass in the beginning of the course. Read the book, take good notes, study and you should be fine. Professor Fridlund can keep a lecture interesting.
250 points total: 20 free points, 100 point midterm, 130 point final. Make sure you do the reading and take detailed notes to review later. Attending lectures is also vital, as he covers a lot of material not available elsewhere (not to mention, they're so entertaining!) Put in the work and you'll get the grade- DO NOT SLACK.
Very interesting course including the textbook. I'm not the greatest student but found the course pretty challenging. Make sure you have enough time to do all the reading and make sure you are taking notes on what the professor is saying not just what the slides say. Got a 70 final/mid did all the reading and took notes every class.
I really loved Professor Fridlund. He and Pandya have been my favorite lecturers so far. I agree with most of his views and I can tell he's a pretty empathetic and understanding. His lectures were really interesting to me. His tests were fairly easy in my honest opinion. I took lecture notes daily, read front of textbook readings and not much else.
I really enjoyed taking his psych 1 course this year! Everyone beware that this is not an easy GE that you get to pass without a lot of effort. Keep up with readings/fairgame sheets and STUDY. A lot, A LOT of people mess up on the midterm because they take it as a joke. Only things graded are midterm and final, but VERY fun and interesting class.
Amazing professor, midterm and finals are pretty hard (midterm mote than final). would however, highly recommend his intro to psych class
Your grade is a combo of the midterm (MC), the final (MC), and participation in some psych experiments. You're tested on material from the reading, slideshows shown in TA sections, and lecture slides. He's a very engaging lecturer and gives memorable examples separate from the lecture slides so don't skip lecture!
Frindlund was a really great professor! Even though I really struggled at the beginning and ended up failing the midterm, I made sure to study my ass off for the final. He gives you all the materials you need to succeed in the class, all you have to do is take advantage of them. It also helped that there was a giant curve at the end of my quarter.
Psych 1 is so much fun to take but very very difficult if you dont do the readings and attend class. Fridlund is a great lecturer and gives a fair game sheet at the beginning of the class that helps so much but start it at the very start to not get behind.
This class was very fun and informational. Be prepared for a fun class that requires A LOT of work. If you don't read you will not pass! Exams are multiple choice, with a lot of answers that could be right. They really test if you did the reading or not. Exams are the the only thing graded Class is worth it if you are willing to put in the effort
He's funny, but that's about it. The midterm and final were very hard, the reading was boring, and there was very little curve. Only grades are midterm and final. Would take him again, but not this course.
Entire class grade was based on the midterm and final, so if you mess up on one, your grade for the class was going to be trash. Lectures were funny though, he's a thoughtful professor but sections didn't do much and there is way too much information.
The majority of test easy to do well on as long as you went to lecture and did the reading, but there were some trick questions that were worded weirdly/had multiple possible correct choices. Your whole grade is a midterm and a final. Lectures were interesting. He had weird rules about all seats having to be filled before starting new rows, etc.
He's a really nice guy and his lectures were fun at times. I personally think his exams are too difficult. I attended all lectures and took very detailed notes and read the book on topics I needed more info on. His exams were tricky and I feel like he could have made them much easier. Class is a lot of information. Get ready to study a lot.
Professor Fridlund is great. He is very in tune with the class and is guaranteed to make you laugh at least once. I took this course as a GE however he made it so interesting that I may look into psychology. The only catch is that your grade relies solely on the midterm, final, and studies you participate in.
Pretty good
Funniest and most interesting class I've taken in my life. This guy is HILARIOUS. Also very nice and approachable, humble. You should show up to every lecture, he will mention things on the final that don't show up in the readings.
This class was great and very interesting. The professor made lectures fascinating and is very hilarious. Midterm and final were pretty tough and your grade is based solely on those two assignments so make sure you form study groups and keep up with the reading and lecture notes.
One of the best professor I ve ever met. Respectful and humorous. Lecture is interesting but also a lot of reading assignment. Grade by 2 exam which is not easy. Btw, textbook is quite expensive but would be ok if sharing with others.
He rambles a lot and doesn't believe in climate change, but the tests aren't too hard if you study right. He also referred to black people as 'the blacks' and is a little sexist, but I got an A so...
This was the most interesting class I've ever taken and Dr. Fridlund is hilarious. However, if you're not planning on being a Psych major I wouldn't take the class because it will wreck your GPA. I got a D on the midterm and studied my ass off for the final and got a B- on it. Not the best choice for a GE unless you want to work SUPER hard.
Extremely funny and engaging. Lectures were fun and the content was interesting. Class is an easy A if you read and go to lecture. His tests may be a bit difficult but if you have a solid understanding of the material you should be fine. Go to section or you'll miss a bunch of new information not in lecture.
Professor Fridlund is a great professor. Lectures are pretty interesting, but you need to put in the work. If you do the readings and keep up with the fair game sheet he posts on Gauchospace, it is completely possible to do well.
Fridlund can be crass but makes the class interesting. SO MUCH READING you need to buy the textbook online version and take hefty notes in lecture. Grade depends on a midterm and a final, and as with any psych class, you need to participate in 6 hours/credits of research on SONA. Do not take as an easy GE, it'll prob break your GPA
Professor Fridlund is a passionate professor. If you are interested in the subject, lectures are pretty interesting and engaging. Reading is a lot but its an easier read compared to other classes. Midterm/final are tricky but try keeping up with the fair game sheet with good notes he posts on Gauchospace.
Don't take for an easy GE! He digressed A LOT in lectures so we had to learn most of the content by ourselves (online book), but it was a lot of work to keep up with and even though I read more than my peers, the midterm and final (no other assignments) were really difficult for me. You'd have to study hardcore everyday to get an A. Funny guy tho
Very engaging lecturer, but he's rude
The content of the class was amazing.... the professor, however, was not. He grades solely on the midterms and finals, which in my opinion is horrifying as it's hard to distinguish the professor's style in asking questions. Also, he doesn't grade on an average curve rather he uses the top score.
If youre interested in psych youll enjoy his lectures, tangents and all. Hes funny, but apparently hes offensive to some people which I dont get. Grade is based on tests only, all multiple choice. Midterm didnt seem too difficult to me. Made a collective study guide, studied for 2 days and got a B. Never used the book, just lecture notes.
This class was very entertaining. Fridlund is passionate about his subject and makes his lectures engaging and humorous. You do have to read a lot, but the online book is well organized and easy to understand. Just show up, read the textbook, study for the exams and you'll do fine!
The material was very interesting, however dont take this as an easy GE. The class requires a lot of reading and the book is expensive. The midterm is a lot harder than the final. Grades based solely off midterm score and final. Ended up passing with a C after I bombed the final and studied a lot of the final.
Fridlund is really nice and his lectures are interesting. The exams are pretty straightforward and easy as long as you read, go to each lecture, and take notes. There really is no way to fail unless you're not studying/doing the readings. He even posts fair game sheets which include all the topics he will include into the midterm and final.
Grade consists of only a midterm worth 100 points and a final worth 150 points. However, he curved both the midterm and final by a few points and then curved the overall course grade at the end too! Questions on test can be a bit tricky, but just fill out the fair game sheet as he covers the material in class and review it and you'll be fine!
I absolutely loved prof fridlund and his class. Genuinely the most interesting class Ive ever taken and the way fridlund presents the material makes it never boring. Your grade is based on only tests but he has a fair game sheet so there really arent any curveballs. He has a good sense of humor and cares about his students.
Funny professor, but is very lecture heavy! Talks about terms not in the book in lecture so make sure to show up! Grade is based only on one midterm and final exam which include 80+ terms to conceptualize but gives you a fair game sheet with all the terms you should know. Don't take unless your a psych major as this isn't an easy GE.
PSY1 is certainly not an easy GE class but actually fun if you are interested in psychology. For the midterm, well, the mean is 64/100. By using statistics, more than 80% of the students did not get a grade above 80. So if you think you are the 20% people that work SUPER HARD and can READ, take it. Otherwise, stay away from this class.
Sooooo funny, and very passionate about psychology. A lot of reading required, and your only grade is the midterm and final so GO TO CLASS and READ THE READINGS and GO TO SECTION. I cant stress that enough. But he makes it all very interesting and gets you very engaged in what youre learning. Gonna miss this class with Fridlund.
Super fun guy, and is really clear in explaining everything. His tests are confusing though because if you did not hear something he said from lecture, or if you didn't get everything from reading, then you're probably going to have a hard time on the tests. He is available after class and in office hours though, and he is fun.
His lectures are super engaging and comprehensive, but you should still do the assigned readings and attend section. Take good notes and fill out your fair game sheet as you go. Definitely wouldn't recommend as an easy GE- class requires lots of work and could easily tank your GPA, since your grade consists of only the midterm and final.
The material was interesting but personally the class was not worth it to me. DO NOT TAKE AS AN EASY GE, it will most likely drop your GPA if you don't put in the work. This class requires a LOT of reading and studying. GO to lecture and section and keep up on readings. Also the only things that make up your grade is the midterm and final.
I squeaked by with an A in the class by keeping up with the assigned readings, printing lectures beforehand for notes, and leaving a good amount of time to study for the tests. The class is graded on one midterm and a final, both are difficult. I loved Mr. Fridlund and found him super funny and all his lectures very engaging.
He is overall a nice man who really cares about his students, and he actually made the materials funny for us to understand. However, even if I put plentiful time into this course doing tens of readings and memorizing the stuff in his lectures, still got NP for this course. His sample questions literally mismatched the tricky exam questions.
One of the best profs I've had. He makes every lecture informative and entertaining. Gives lots of examples and clearly puts a lot of effort into his lectures. Midterms are a bit hard, but doable. The reading and TA sections are always interesting. He makes me want to come to lecture. Can't wait to take another of his classes. 10/10 good vibes
Hes a great lecturer and some of his class was entertaining because of it. I did the fair game sheet and read but felt the midterm had some unexpected questions on it. The final is easier than the midterm.
I found many things he said to be quite inaccurate in his lectures. His Republican view points often collided with his teachings and he misinformed so many students. There was a question on one test that forced you to answer along the lines of: Black people are not targeted more by police. His lectures mostly taught history as well, not psych.
Taking this class my first quarter of my freshman year was a mistake. It is a lot of reading and studying. I definitely wasn't prepared, but I still took the hit and got a C in the class (it's what I deserved). Fridlund is a great professor and brings a positive attitude when you come to class. DON'T WAIT TILL THE END TO STUDY! STUDY NOW!
Fridlund is a divisive professor. Some people love his humor and passion for the subject while others hate his politics. For me, I didn't really care either way, but do beware: his lectures do not cover all the test material, exams count for your whole grade, so take this class if you're not interested in the subject.
Professor Fridlund was great! He is very funny and enthusiastic in class though his class is difficult. The grade is only based off of the midterm and the final which was not ideal. The textbook is expensive and online; get ready to read it a lot. He will tell you to form a study group at the beginning of class; DO IT!
Fridlund definitely knows his stuff, but in the case of Psych 1, too well. He clearly stopped giving a crap about this class at least a decade ago. The class is structured so poorly that apparently the TAs still (a quarter later) sometimes talk about how useless it was. Take him for upper divs, for intro wait till winter, spring, or summer.
Very funny guy, makes what he talks about seem very interesting so I was engaged and learned a lot. Only graded on the midterm and the final, so be sure to study the whole quarter through. Most kids didnt do the readings and just went to lecture but I did all the readings and the class came pretty easily to me. Loved Fridlund! Cool and smart guy
The curve is based on highest person, would've gotten a theoretical A if someone didn't get 100 on the MT... Took it P/NP anyways since my MT grade wasn't too great. Study fair game sheet fast and space it out. LOTS to memorize. Wouldn't recommend as a GE. Don't cram or procrastinate. Took it my first quarter, and his tests were tricky.
All the material is very interesting and Fridlund is great at teaching it. The class itself is amazing, but the tests were hard and class averages were super low for an introductory class. As long as you stay up to date on readings and follow the fair game sheet he gives perfectly, you should be ok in this class
His tests are difficult. The class average was a 65% and he did not curve it.
The lectures are very interesting and he is funny and engaging. I loved his lectures and videos. However, the class is only graded by the midterm and the final (all multiple choice). He gives out a fair game sheet with all the key terms, so make sure you know the definitions and understand all the terms fully. Overall a very nice GE!
Dr. Fridlund is a horrible professor for psychopathology. He spreads misinformation and portrays mental disorders in harmful, stereotypical ways. Along with that he is also just the most boring professor I have ever had. I wish I had not taken the class
Only graded on the midterm and non-cumulative final. I definitely think his class is tough because it's asynchronous and requires chapter readings, but I learned a lot and I think this is a helpful class to take if you're looking into clinical or counseling psychology. Very accessible through office hours or email!
The content of the course is supposed to be interesting but in my opinion Fridlund made the material very boring. Watching his lectures made me tired and I honestly feel like he turned an interesting topic into very boring lectures. We were graded on a midterm and final. The exams were not flexible (not asynchronous) as other exams have been.
In all honesty he is a good lecturer. However, he is absolutely horrible to you during office hours. Rude, condescending, and incredibly patronizing. He makes you feel less of a human for asking questions. He does not care about his students. Only about maintaining his self image during lectures.
The worst teacher I've ever had. DON'T take this class if you don't have to. The grade is basically only the midterm and final. Lectures are an hour and a half w about an hour of him rambling off about some obscure topic that won't help on his tests whatsoever. Also had to buy the online textbook just for readings he could've posted on gauchospace
His recorded lectures were great and interesting. He gives you a sheet with terms that you need to know. The book is a bit necessary because you need to know the definitions of some terms but I'm sure you can find that textbook "elsewhere." The additional readings aren't necessary. The class is heavy on memorization with some application.
Professor is nice and lectures are not too long. No extra credit, only two non cumulative exams for the whole grade. Provides a "fair game sheet" which tells what will be on the exams, half of that is trough lectures and the other half reading the book. kind of have to teach yourself in that class. He's a nice guy but I got bored & did P/NP
Although he's really caring and tries his best, he makes a fascinating subject so boring. He doesn't lecture very well and his slides look terrifying but it's definitely doable if you put the work in. If I hadn't gone to office hours I probably would've hated this class but he is the sweetest man and gives amazing advice/feedback. 100pt MT/150F
How I went from a C- to a perfect score on the final (thank me later): Ignore the fair game sheet and book quizzes. It's useless. Just go through his lecture slides and memorize what's important (i.e. not the statistics, medication names, or extra examples he uses). The reading helps but the exams were almost all from the slides.
He is really nice and you can tell he cares a lot about what he is teaching. HOWEVER, his curriculum is terrible. He only has a midterm and a final plus research credits that are only worth 4% of the grade. You mess up on either of the tests and you have to get an A on the other test to pass with a C. Use study groups if you get stuck with him.
Fridlund enjoys teaching psychology but the way he grades his courses is exceedingly difficult. Your entire grade hinges on doing well on both the midterm and the final. Slipping up on one of them means the other has to be ACED or else your grade will drop by 1-2 levels. At least add some busywork to help cushion grades or offer extra credit!
PSY183 with Fridlund has been my favorite class I've ever taken! Your grade is only based off one midterm and one final, so you better study, but that means there isn't much outside work. The tests are also very fair, and as long as you pay attention in lecture, you should be fine. Fridlund is also very passionate, and that spreads like wildfire.
Dr. Fridlund is an amazing professor. His classes are so interesting and he make the material super engaging. Attendance isnt mandatory, so its easy to fall off the wagon since theirs only a MT and Final. However, you should expect to perform poorly if you dont attend lecture and review notes.
Buddy teaches intro psych like its a weeder class. Even though I studied very hard I still only managed to get a B. Don't take him if u want an easy A. Only slight upside is that his lectures can be entertaining. Don't get his cutthroat attitude over something that should be easy
Professor Fridlund is awesome. He is super enthusiastic about the material, has an excellent sense of humor, and doesn't give any busy work - just tests that he provides comprehensive study guides for well in advance. If you consistently go through them and read the material, you should get an A. I got a B because I was a bit lazy LOL. Great class!
Prof. Fridlund is an absolutely phenomenal professor. He uses real life examples and is amazing at what he does. You will never be bored in his lectures. This being said, LISTEN TO HIM WHEN HE SAYS TO STUDY and use the fair game sheet! Your grade is dependent on only the midterm and final exam, which definitely require you to go to lectures.
Fridlund was great, PSY 183 was really fun for an upper div without prerequisites. Graded solely on one midterm and a final. Final is not cumulative. Just keep up with the reading, and pay attention in the lecture. I got roughly 75% on the first midterm without opening the book. Form a study group early and you should be set.
Passionate, funny, and amazing lectures.
The textbook is necessary for the articles written by Fridlund that are in the UCSB CUSTOM edition. It's possible to do well just by reading the slides and the textbook addenums, but Fridlund is a phenomenal lecturer, so I highly suggest attending. Fill out the fair game sheet and study it leading up to the exam - there's little room for error!
He is an amazing professor who is very passionate about what he teaches. His lectures are very interesting. However, you are only graded on a midterm, a final, and research participation credit. So if you plan on taking his classes, make sure you understand the concepts, study ahead of time, and join study groups.
DO NOT TAKE FRIDLUND FOR PSY1! Yes, he can be funny and make lectures entertaining but he treats PSY1 like a weeder class and makes final and midterm exceedingly difficult and they are the only things you're graded off! Take it from someone who didn't listen to other peoples ratings of this guy-- DON'T TAKE HIM IF YOU WANT AN EASY A!
Pretty alright. Not the easiest nor hardest.
During the quarter he taught, I looked back at the grades that were distributed over the entire class. Tell me why over half the students failed this class. He only lectures, will not tell you how many questions are on the test, and your grade is only based on how well you do on your test.
This professor is so fun. Made lectures digestible and provided good commentary on the material. Grade is solely based on midterm and final. Memorize the slides and read the book and you are guaranteed an A. Super fun and interesting class, highly recommend.
I loved this class and Professor Fridlund! Attendance isn't mandatory but I highly suggest attending. He is very funny and makes interesting commentary. Your grade depends entirely on your midterm and final which is very content-heavy. I regret not getting the textbook porbs would've ended up with A instead of B.
This will be a prof/class that I remember for life. One of the few classes that had high attendance the WHOLE quarter bc everyone was hooked. Fridlund is funny, kind, and is knowledgable/passionate about the content. I wish I could take another class with him & cannot recommend this class enough. Go to class, form a study group, and you'll do fine!
one of the best lecturers i've had and he's is a funny guy who cares a lot about this profession! go to his office hours to chat with him if you're interested in clinical psych. my tip is to do the study guide throughout the lecture and form study groups to solidify the material for your exams. an A is doable.
he is hilarious and has a lot of experience relevant to the course that he shares to help solidify concepts. he posts slides before lectures. grade break down was midterm and final only. take this class if you're a psych major it is so interesting.
Professor Fridlund is one of the best professors I've had at UCSB. Though the class was hard, and I recommend taking him for upper divisions instead, his lectures, explanations, and ability to make students understand the groundwork of psychological processes, experiments, and theories are unparalleled.
he is hilarious! attendance was consistent because he was just that amazing of a lecturer and as a person! i emailed him on a current study on something we were covering (so not mandatory ASAP email) and he responded within a couple hours, so super accessible!!! he was super nice and funny, very clear grading (midtermx2, final). get the textbook!
Hilarious and makes the material super interesting. Also is a practicing psychotherapist, so he talks about his own experiences with patients that have the disorders talked about in class. You are only graded on the midterm and final, but both are multiple choice and pretty straightforward. Definitely my favorite class I've taken at UCSB!
One of the best professors I have ever had here at UCSB, his class had everyone hooked, and the attendance was always high. He talks about his experiences as a therapist and he is very passionate about what he teaches. highly recommend him, his exams are heavy because they have a lot of information but read, go to class, and study the lectures!
A great professor and lecturer, making it easy enough to understand so many concepts in a short amount of time. You only have a midterm and final, no extra assignments or quizzes. But you have to go to lecture and do the readings since the tests can be heavy. If you're up for that, I can't recommend him enough. Easily one of my favorite classes.
Professor Fidlund's psych 183 class was one of my favorites at my time here. His lectures are very engaging and interesting to where you don't want to miss a class. Grades are determined by a midterm and final, but if you read the textbook and attend class you should be able to receive a good grade in the class.
Teaching style and course content are both so entertaining that even with optional attendance, most of the class showed up throughout the quarter. Don't let anyone tell you the class is unfair or too hard. Yes, the A isn't automatic, but he tells you EXACTLY what you need to do to succeed. Plus, he curves the tests and final grade.
Fridlund is a funny professor but if you take this class make sure you're ready to put in the work. The class is very content heavy with dense slides and multiple textbook readings. I didn't end up using the textbook halfway through the class but I think it would definitely help. Attendance isn't mandatory but I think going helps tremendously.
