Dr. Gumm is a great teacher with an awesome sense of humor.
Dr. Gumm is the kind of teacher that makes the class fun and enjoyable.
Makes having to sing in front of the class easy and fun!
Yeah women's chorus! ...Gumm kicks some booty!
This is the most infuriating teacher he doesn't give good direction and is lame
The best teacher I have had at the university. He is very intellegent.
What can one say, a teacher that knows how to teach. Other professors could learn from him.
He is the very best teacher I have ever had. This was such a fun class, I actually looked foward to going to it!

Women's Chorus is the best and Dr. Gumm makes it that way. He's so easy to talk to and gets to know everyone's individual talents and names. It's a great class to be in if you are a female who loves to sing.

Very nice man, but I didn't enjoy his music selection. Women's Chorus could sound a lot better with different songs...
Dr Gumm is about as unclear as coffee, so ask a ton of questions. He is always willing to help, but you have to drag the answer out of him. Most of people in our class were Bass Ackwards for the majority of the time. Good ideas/teacher. Go to class!
Good teacher for a hard class. He makes you think!
"Those who can, teach. Those who can't teach, teach teachers."
This guy definately has his favorites in class, and if you're not one of them then sorry about your bad luck. He has good ideas, but is VERY unclear at most times-especially when he gives out assisnments 5 minutes after class has ended.
he's so awesome! he is challenging but not too challenging. he stretches you but he doesn't break you. I wish i had room for more women's chorus in my schedule cause i'd take it every semester.
Unlike many I did not share the same feelings about him. I thought he was very unclear. Be prepared to actively participate
easy class, fun times. he's a lot of fun and makes it easy for the musically challenged. he doesn't get mad, ever. he can control his feelings and frustrations.
FRUSTRATING prof - FRUSTRATING assignments - FRUSTRATING class (especially for only one credit)
This is a professor that allows you to reach your potential by challenging you. Of course it's going to be frustrating, but the very best professors will be.
all I can say is be prepared to participate!!!! You will sing, you will dance, you will do anything and everything an elementary student would do. Also, he is very unclear on his instructions! A lot of work for 1 credit!!!!!!!
He does not explain things very well and for as much effort that gets put into the projects you do, he doesn't grade very well.
Good choir instructor, it's hard to control 85 women! Has a good temper and is patient.
He is a wonderful guy with a good sense of humor! Very fun class and would recommend it to anyone!!
While most of the comments are negative, I have some positive things to say. Yes this is a one credit class but honestly it's not that bad. I can't sing to save my life but it's not like he's asking you to sing a whole song by yourself. Take this class.
Gumm is amazing. It's hard to control one woman let alone 80 of them. He's got great patients, and is an amazing instructor. He's willing to help whenever you need it. He's a very encouraging professor, and CMU needs more of those!
Dr. Gumm is the worst conductor I've ever been under. I'm an instrumental major and did women's chorus to have SOME experience in choir in case I have to teach it some day, and it was AWFUL. Directors are supposed to be CLEAR, not trick you.
Dr. Gumm is very enthusiastic and has a way of making you see and hear more than you thought was possible. Women's chorus is a fantastic release from a stressful day. If you have time i definitely recommend this class
Enthusiastic and very knowledgable about the subject, but is very unclear on assignments. At 8 in the morning, you don't want this class! The assignments aren't bad, he doesn't clarify them though, which is frustrating.
I love Dr. Gumm. He's an excellent conductor and an all around great guy. I wish more professors were like him.
I came from a h.s. where the choir teacher was very rude, & Dr. Gumm really makes me enjoy coming to choir instead of not. He helps you realize that you can fix things w/out relying on him, if you need help, he'll help you. I definately enjoy his class.
Dr. Gumm is an AMAZING professor. he is always so animated, and makes a lot of jokes. he goes out of his way to help you, and lets you make up absences, even the week of the concert. Dr. Gumm is AWESOME!!!
Very good teacher, very good conductor, very very funny! You learn alot from him.
He is a great teacher! I have learned a lot from him. He is a very nice guy! And I would strongly recomend to anyone to work one on one with him if you ever have the chance. You will learn things about your voice you never knew. He is a very talented musician!
Great teacher! HE is so complimentary and motivational.
Dr. Gumm is a great person. He can also be very organized with what he does. He is NOT clear with assignments, however. I found this quite frustrating.
Dr. Gumm is a great example to all of us - on how NOT to teach. He rides his students about their own organization - yet is so unorganized that there is seldom a day when you know what is expected of you. He will ask you to hand in assignments that he forgot to assign, etc.
Be ready for not knowing whats going on, he makes assignment due dates very confusing......good teacher but very confusing!! dont be afraid to say you dont understand, cause everyone does.
AWFUL CLASS! He's in denial and thinks the world is full of freakin' Butterflies and kittens. Bull-crap teacher, but for his subject area, I guess thats the game. Hated the class, and I never thought I'd long for Sue Gamble again!
PEOPLE, PLEASE! This man has NO CLUE what he is talking about. Very, very bad prof. I will be a worse teacher from taking this class. He seems all nice at first, but he can become rude and confused, and unwilling to listen to reason. Overall, he is a BAD BAD MEAN MAN.
It's his way or no way...he's not even open to simply discussion alternative teaching methods. Talks down to us like we're children. Not very clear about what he expects from assignments, or when they're do. Hope you're good at reading minds if you take this class.
This class is....interesting. He approaches music differently, and gets frustrating because it's all "stop-and-go". If you have to start in this choir do it, but i guarantee you'll soon want to be in a higher choir with more developed musical teachers.
he was a great prof. He taught me all sorts of great teaching techniques. He was also just fun to have it was nice to get up and move around in a class and get to play like children do. I would take him again for another class.
This guy is one of the best choir directors I have ever known. Totally recomend him to everyone!!!
Dr. Gumm is a nice man but can be annoying. Women's Chorus is a great class if you dont mind stop-n-starting all the time. And if you can handle him rambling on and on or deal with an entire rehersal where he doesn't say a word. This class is great for a year but after that you will just be constantly annoyed. Try it and enjoy, it's not that bad.

He is energetic and cares about us. He has always been positive and encouraging. He has made me sing in ways i never new i could. at first he is hard to understand but after a bit of getting used to u can read him better and know where he is going.
I didn't know what to expect coming in as a freshman, but Dr. Gumm has always been very upfront to us of what he wanted and his expectations of us in his class. He is very understanding and patient-but has a mind for time as well-so we don't get out late mostly. I felt it an honor to be accepted into his class and still feel that way now.
He is a nice guy, but he believes that music is the only thing that should be taught in schools. He is very picky about everything you do, and doesn't give very good directions. You will need the book, and the class is a LOT of work. You have to write lesson plans and sing and dance in from of the class
I hated this class with a passion! he thought he was God's gift to the world and that he was the best at everything and anything. He gets up on his soapboxes and just rants about how other people suck and he doesn't. His assignments were confusing and it was hard to figure out what he actually wanted. You have to go to class, or else!
I thought this class was a lot of fun with Dr. Gumm. He's very understanding, and he wants all his students to do well. I would highly recommend to take this class with him.
he was funny and he loves teaching
Dr. Gumm is hilarious, fun, and cares greatly for his students. Make sure to attend class or make up any absences because they will impact your grade. Dr. Gumm loves teaching and it is apparent. If you're not used to being physically involved in singing, this class may tire you out a little though. Overall great class!
Great prof, great class. Dr. Gumm applies his teaching methods to music as well as other disciplines. Took this class at the same time as my cohorts, and I learned more from Dr. Gumm than I did any of my other classes. He is very passionate about what he does. Sometimes he is a tad unclear, but just ask him to clarify and you'll be fine. :)
Dr. Gumm is a great professor, and a caring person. At first, I thought his teaching methods were a little bizarre, but they really work. He has helped me access parts of my voice I didn't know were there! Teaches the class seriously, but also knows how to have fun. Attendance is a must.
Love Dr. Gumm! He is hilarious and truly cares for each and every student in his class. He really knows a lot about singing and music and has a lot to teach. He helped me improve my singing techniques and my voice overall.
Very friendly and funny. He uses many different methods to reach everyone in his class and picks really interesting music. However, he has favorites and if you are not one of them, it is quite frustrating in class and performances.
I love this guy! He knows what he's doing, is nice, friendly and funny.
He is seriously the most awesome music director ever!! He is so different from anyone you will ever have. He brings you into the world of music like you've never experienced it before.
I don't know if this is just because he's back from Sebatacle, but he has been completely rude to people in this class & still expects you to respect him. He guilt trips the students constantly & forget about actually learning the music. He changes it up randomly during the concert and if he's not at class, students are taught by other students.
Not the best professor for this course. He preaches about how it isn't right to praise only one child, then goes on to praise one student over everyone else. Plays favorites like crazy. Good luck with your lesson plans because he's very specific and says that he wants you to do it your way, but do it your way means do it his way or fail.
Dr. Gumm is a really unique teacher. He's funny and wants to have a relationship with his students. He is very respectable and extremely passionate about his job. He makes students enjoy being in class. Attendance IS mandatory but really, practice is everything when learning music. Would definitely take this class again!
Definitely the worst professor I have ever worked with. I've been singing for nineteen years and I have never worked with a director so incompetent. I have literally been driven to tears out of frustration. He can't stay on topic and can't direct in a consistent way. Never take any classes from him, you will regret it.
I hate going to choir everyday which is sad because choir is the whole reason I wanted to go into music. Acts like he knows everything because he's taken choirs "around the world" and wrote a book. He's disrespectful to his students but some reason returning members are up his butt & if you say bad things about him get ready for them to FREAK on u
He is crazy. He wants things his way and never explains what he is thinking. He is completely unprofessional and I would not recommend being in his choir.
He is super passionate about choir and does things in very unique ways, you've never seen before. At times this can be very frustrating, and other times this can be very rewarding. Make sure to practice your music outside of class! He doesn't play favorites. You definitely have to keep an open mind when taking his class though.
It took me about a month to learn how he directs a choir, once I learned I stayed for 3.5 years! A lot of people just aren't willing to learn his style of direction or adapt to a new choir environment, but you have to commit to learning from him! It's so worth it! My resonance has improved 100% with him. I've never had a better musical experience.
Dr. Gumm is a really interesting guy. He has a lot of knowledge about music and directing, I feel like it can be frustrating for the choir when he does not communicate his ideas. His unique teaching style is the reason why so many people leave the choir program after taking his class, but if you can adapt he's great!
He is very easy going and understandable. If you put in the effort and show improvement, he will pass you. It was a very fun and easy class and would definitely take again
I love Gumm. Gets a lot of hate because some think they are too good for his class. There is a lot of drama surrounding the music department at cmu but despite what you may hear, he really is a fantastic teacher and a loving guy.
Dr. Gumm is super passionate and knowledgeable - you just have to be willing to think about things differently. He gives so much time and effort to his students. I visited him weekly apart from choir and he's helped me cultivate my own compositions. He's a caring individual, but this choir is not for those with a closed mind, or a stuck up attitude
You need to go to class. He is very kind if you miss a few days but your grade will be impacted. You also need to buy the textbooks. He focuses heavily on singing at the beginning but he makes it so that it is not scary. Just be willing to get out of your comfort zone.
Dr. Gumm, although very passionate and knowledgeable, is infamous for both being all over the place and struggling to be clear with his students. The Blackboard section of his class is structured differently than other profs so you just have to get used to it. He will let you make up absences during his office hours. Try to be patient and ask Qs!
Professor Gumm was a knowledgable professor and is very passionate about music and how it relates to the brain. Uses powerpoint for lecture and speeds through them. Asks that you participate in class. It is a writing intensive class with lots of writing assignments. 3 Quizzes/Tests during semester and the final was a paper and short presentation.
very passionate and grades on a curve. Make sure you study for tests, I would say at the very latest one week in advance to get good grade
He is sporadic and teaches very inconsistently. He never fully answers questions when they are asked, and gets defensive when people are confused by his methods. When conducting, his motions are abrupt, unfitting, and typically are never within a metrical pattern. Not exactly ideal for an Intro to Conducting class.
I took him for MUS 115 & I almost withdrew from the class. He is anti-technology, so only hand written notes are allowed (weird, I didn't realize he was in my brain & knew how I learn best) & there's a lot of material to cover. However, he was a pretty easy grader when it came to the papers which helped my grade. Not a terrible class in the end.
Dr. Gumm is a very outgoing and extremely NICE man. Although, you must do things his way in regards of lesson plans. Hard to follow exactly what he wants you to do. I recommend office hours but block a good hour out of your schedule. Attendance is mandatory, if you miss you can make up by going to office hours. He has all over the place lectures.
Professor Gumm is a nice man. He is accessible out of class which is nice, however, he's very old school. If you do not do the assignments exactly how he would do it, you're more likely to receive a lower grade on the assignment. Although, he never really grades lower than a B, so you should be fine either way.
After the first week I was overwhelmed and nervous for this class because it seemed quite difficult, but it was actually very easy. There are not many homework assignments & only four quizzes. He does not believe in typing out your notes, you must hand write them. Attendance also matters because he doesn't post his slides. He's a very easy grader.
Dr.Gumm has a personality that I just do not vibe with. I found his lectures annoying and honestly couldn't handle it. He is a perfectly fine professor but you really need to like his personality to be able to sit through his class.
Not necessary to buy the book, got a very good grade on course without ever opening book. Papers are insanely easy and you will actually learn how to write and will give lots of feedback. Only 3 quizzes the whole semester, no final, several 1 page papers, and he is very fair on grading.
Professor is very bad at communicating and makes you buy a course packet. Does not listen to students.
I loved being in his class. He cares about his students and is always willing to change an opinion on how he does something if he is presented with new information. Grades on "what you know" and tries to help you remember things when you are stuck.
