the tests are the exact questions from the online quiz all you have to do is pratice on them... depends on your ta how hard the homework is graded
His class is a whole lot of fun. You will learn a lot about different economic systems. Fun teacher to sit down with and discuss world events and politics. Really funny guy. Tests are long essay questions. Be warned if you are not a good writer.
a self-proclaimed socialist, this man will not let a class go without putting in his own bit of political commentary. i'm not sure why i should learn economics from someone who believes in an economic system that has been proven unrealistic.
he was extremely politically biased, i hated that.. and the exams were not that easy
the tests are the exact questions from the online quiz all you have to do is pratice on them... depends on your ta how hard the homework is graded.Politically biased.
I liked professor Gummerso, yes he is opiniated but so what. He does give work but if you do it it helps for the exams. The exams are straightforward if you study you could do very well. He is funny and very accessible and helpful, I recommend him.
This class was terrible, he gives soo much hw and the TA's grade extremely hard. Class is a waste of time, its just guided reading. I wouldnt recommend this class to anyone.. there are better profs out there.
Worse Prof. ever !! Exam's are way too hard. The essay's are impossible to pass. Alot of homework. The book was more helpful then he ever was. I wouldn't recommend this prof. to ANYONE!
this class is a joke, he just basically reads out of the textbook and goes page by page. never went to class. just need to read every chapter and go through the study questions online and you will be fine
very good easy to understand but very opiniated
He won't help you outside of the lectures. i went to his office 2Xs and he made up excuses as to why he could not help me. he claims if he helps one student, he would have to help them all. he's a lazy guy. the only good thing about him is that all his tests are curved. good lck with this guy
not a very pleasant, or helpful teacher at all. change classes if you can.
Ok, one has to understand that this guy has his good days and bad days...on good days he was fun to listen to, but on bad days forget it! The TA that graded was a nightmare! Homework will frustrate you. Gummerson is not helpful, and he doesn't relate well with students. I give him a B- as a prof.
Awesome teacher, he is really nice and very articulate. Very interesting class, I would recommend it to everyone.
Gummerson does an excellent job of teaching. He's very good humored and always willing to address any questions his students might have. And contrary to what others say, he does a good job of helping his students outside the classroom. He has a passion for what he teaches and does so with clarity.
This class is for the person that REALLY wants to learn. He is opinionated but in a positive way. He is very clear in his explanations and he will answer your questions. He is no the easiest teacher but an A is very attainable if you pay attenion. Great teacher!! He knows his economics. He is funny.
Awesome guy. i enjoyed him, very opinionated but helps u understand the material. very funny, i recommend him to anyone
He is a good teacher, explains everything clearly, but he never shuts up, he is constantly talking and it gets really annoying, he nevers gives you a break.
I have to say...he is extremely boring!!!! Lectures the entire time and there is homeowrk due every single class which is graded. Tests are also not very easy.
Excellent teacher, funny, gives good examples. I took Macro on the fall with Oliveira, I dropped that class, but Prof. Gummerson is the best intro to macroeconomics teacher FIU has, no doubt about it. You just have to read the book,LISTEN to his lectures, ask questions, do the HW and you'll br fine.
Gummerson is the best, I read my chapters, did my h/w which is due once a week, not every time the class meets. (He might collected everyday in the short summer terms.) I asked many questions in class more than 5 per class, and brought out good topics... he is helpfull if you care to ask for he help
Good teacher and very helpful. Go to lectures and read the textbook and you should be fine with this class.
Teacher seemed cool at first BUT... Turned out to be an inconsiderate and unhelpful professor. God forbid you question his strategies. Tests are hard and homework is a must. A little lazy depends on TA's(which are never on time) for HW Grades. I Don't Recommend him...
Hes a Fair teacher. you just have to keep up with your homework thats whats manily on the test. But his test have a BiG curve so overall the class is OkAy.
Very inspiring classes. If you listen to everything that he says and spend time on the homeworks, then preparing for the exams is a breeze. Never in my life did I think that Economics can be made so interesting!!!
The best professor to take for intermediate macro.
I loved his class, he really knows his material. It is a very interesting class, and the exams are to think.
Class is easy if HW is done, but this is mostly due to the quality of the text. Teacher is adament in his opinions, and somewhat unavailable. He did not let me make up my HW when my grandfather died, i found that a bit heartless.
He's fair...He has strong opinions and tries to prove them to you, and does an excellent job in doing so...You stay on top of your game, and he will get you understanding Economics better than any other teacher...

this class isnt that hard, i was rarely there and i got a B...and when i was there i slept heh. But seriously if you do the homework (which isnt worth much but its a good review) and use the online study thing that comes from the book, and pay attention a little bit in class, you will get an A.
This guy is awesome he made me want to minor in economics. great teaching skills and I am currently taking ecs 3003 with him he is really really good at what he does. great class
Horrible. The class is so boring!! He does give a curve that can either work for you or against you which kind of sucks. I hated this class. He is also quite MEAN!! do not reccommend
He's overall a good professor but kinda boring. He takes up the entire hour. I learned more from reading the book and doing the homework than listening to his lectures.
SUCH A HARD TEACHER!!!!! VERY DEMANDING!
amazing teacher, amazing class- highly recommend.
Political views are slanted towards the left. Explained profit from a Marxist point of view. Good at teaching economics but his opinions are biased. Very clear and easy to learn from. Overall a good class(if you ignore his political preaching).
he was very clear and explained everything in-depth. highly recommended
He is a good teacher
Verrrrrrrrry Hard. Boring. Dont listen to these other people. He aint good.
Confusing and will put you to sleep
He is a good professor but the class material is hard. Be prepare to do Homework is 10 % of your grade. He curves the tests and HW.
This professor is really good and it is soooo interesting to see how good he knows his material. I also enjoy the way he teaches because he really gets into it and you can tell he enjoys his job. DO NOT listen to the person that said this course was hard...they are probably just lazy and do not like to work...I am not going to lie you have to work
good teacher. knows the material very well. i wont lie you have to do work. Homework and tests are curved. 3rd exxam is hard. he loves economics and he loves teaching. Take him. Be in class everyday if you want a good grade.
GOOD TEACHER, you just read the book and get an A, for real the 3 exams are straight from the book kind of like the HW problems, this is bc he only goes over the book he doesn't say anything different, that's why if reding gets you bored, then sometimes he's lectures might put you to sleep. anyway compareto others I highly recommend him
Extremely passionate teacher..and an extremely compassionate human being.Should be the head of U.N.!!!His ideas are thought-provoking; his lectures go far and beyond the curriculum. At the end of the course, you come out as a better person. But if you are looking for an easy course, this is not it.You've to like reading & writing to get good grades.
His lectures consist of him reading the book. I'm not sure if you would really call it teaching.Tests come straight from the book and have a sweet curve. His TA was a prick and would grade HWs hard. Really boring lectures but if you read the book and study the online questions, you'll be fine.
Great teacher, he makes the class interesting and his curve is amazing. Plus, there is no final, the last test is just what was covered from the test before it till that point, so no worrying about remembering things from the start of the year..
Excellent Professor. Homework can be hard. If you do it, it will help you for tests. Tests are not hard. They are straightforward. Do practice online. It really helps. Ignore the negative comments about Gummerson. He is always there to help during office hours and makes Economics interesting and fun. I'm considering majoring in Economics now.
Ok class. Not bad. Not good. Gummerson is a good professor though. Lots of homework.
Hard class and does a fairly good job presenting it. But, he reminds me of a person who desired to make it on Wall Street but couldn't do it due to his personality (or lack there of). But, if you put in the hours, you will make a B at least.
He is a great professor, yet his class is somewhat hard. a lot of homework but at the end is kinda extra credit. I got an A and If I can do it, you can too.
The class is not as easy at people make it seem. He is a decent teacher. My micro teacher was better. This is the only class that homework has ever hurt me. I do better on the test then on my homework. I have no idea how his TA grades it.

This guy is mean- he didn't accept my homework after my grandfather passed- even though i handed it to him DONE the next class. his class is boring and he holds communist-like beliefs. He's VERY leftist, to the point where i wonder why he lives in a country based on capitalism?? In addition, his TA does all his work.
Passionate teacher, knows his material, didnt give you enough chances to improve your grade though, 3 exams 90% and HW 10% NO QUIZZES in between in case you screw up on the exam...
He explains everything in depth... very clear... go prof.
he goes directly by the book, easily to follow, will explain things until u understand... unless u dont let him know... good teacher
If you want to spend hours upon hours on your homework for a 40% and if you want to eat sleep and breathe macro the weekend before the test to get a maybe a C, and not have any time for other classes to end up with maybe a C overall, then go ahead and take this class! But, everyone is so bad that the curve is like.. 50%=C
he is really into economics. i took this class during the summer. the homework was online so it was pretty easy. yeah its alotta work and u really gotta study, but he helps u during the lectures. make sure to interact and ask questions. I got an 'A' after working very hard so it is possible. good luck.
He is a great professor! very knowledgable and helpful. You'll definitely learn macro with him, but don't take it if you want an easy A (only top 15% of the class get A's)
Interesting class. Knows his stuff and knows how to teach. You must do homework and study in order to pass. But you will leave understanding macro.
Mr. Gummerson is one of the best economic teachers FIU has. True, its not an easy A but as long as you go to class, do your hwk and pay attention you'll get an A. if ur lazy and just want a letter grade (and not learn anything) than he is definitely not for your bc with him you'll really learn your economics. Overall he is very knowledgeable, great
His teaching skills are horrible. He grades his exams according to his own personal opinion rather than what the book says. When I challenged him on an exam question he did not know how to answer me. From then on, he hated me. Don't get on his bad side. Besides that, his lectures are boring and he reads straight from the book, which is not helpful.
Not an easy A, but if you study and attend his lectures, you can do it. Knows his material, but can get boring.
Great professor! He is really passionate about economics and will really interest you in the subject.
One of the best economic teachers, if you really want to learn you should take him. His tests are pretty hard, but his curves are pretty good! If you read the textbook and do the homework you will pass for sure!
Thinks his "opinions" are "facts". Easy book but test are very hard. Not fair at all, can be rude and is not funny, even though he thinks he is.
Awesome Guy.... I was the youngest one in the class and did well, worked my ass off, but he is always there for office hours. Test are the hardest I have ever seen, however the curve is awesome and you just have to beat your classmates and not him to do good! take him!
If you do not like Economics, this is not your guy. He makes no attempt to thoroughly explain the subject - reads straight from the book. Tests are a pain in the butt. Not recommended.
With this prof you can forget about an easy A. You really will have to work your a** off to get A or B. He knows the subject, his explanations are very clear and you better listen to him carefully in order to pass a test. If you really want to know Economics - hi is the guy to take!
Generally seems to know what he's talking about, but goes on a lot of tangents so it's sometimes hard to stay focused. Reads straight from the book, and does not take attendance so it's hard to get motivation for going to class. He curves though, and on the first test for my class, i got a 56. But it was a B-.
dude is smart, but hes is SO BORING!
I read the comments before taking this class and thought he would be great but it didn't go that way at all. His exams are really hard and there's a lot of hw which are hard sometimes. He was just really hard, you might be better off not taking it don't beleive the comments that he's a great professor. The only thing is that he's nice that's all.
horrible. test are hard & homework is long & graded & confusing.
AWESOME!!!! He is very good at teaching the material. Real funny. Just make sure you go to class and do your homework nd you will be fine.
Smart, but NO! Take this class with Sabet- you'll learn just as much and your grade won't suffer.
Classes are hard. You'll have to nail the material in order to get a good grade in his exams, but he gives a really good curve! Overall, he's very knowledgeable, you'll learn A LOT! he's the best econ. professor I've had. If you want to learn, take him, it won't be easy but it'll be worthwhile.
This professor is HARD. VERY hard. But you do learn a lot in his class and he does know the material well. just be ready to get a low grade. The grading scale is weird and the exams at 10 multiple choice questions and two essay questions which are rather hard. No extra credit at all.
Amazing professor!!! He goes by the book and makes the subject very interesting. I definitely recommend him...he's funny too!
DONT TAKE THIS CLASS! He reads from the book like a quarter of the class then the rest of the class he just talks about his own socialist opinion. His homework is online and pretty easy but that only acounts for a small percentage of the grade. His 3 test (60% of the grade) are extremely hard!
Ugh horrible teacher. He gives no extra credit and his tests are very hard. There is homework but its only worth ten percent of your grade. Your final grade is based on your three exams and they are very hard! I do not recommend this teacher
this prof is amazing. For those students that are lazy and dont put effort, it will be hard. But if you actually do the reading and ask questions in class there is no reason to get and A or B.He is one of the most clear and understandable professors there is. If you want to learn and your willing to work hard this man is the best choice.
If you want to actually LEARN take his class and work your butt off!! It's easy for those it is logical to. (DUH) I do not suggest for a freshman to take him. He is difficult but as long as you go to his office hours he will try and make you understand. If you want an easy A take another professor. I begged for extra credit and still NO!! Nice guy
Before I took him I came here and read all the bad comments, but I thought it'd be like the college algebra classes, all the retards take them and then write bad reviews. NO. this class was really, actually HARD. he took off 15 points on my test once because i didn't mention ONE word in my essay. If you want to keep your GPA up,don't do it.
Class is interesting its over before you know it. seems like a nice guy but he makes his class HARD.. his test at 12 questions and each worth 30% theres 3 test total. His test are way harder then they should be. Plus all he talks about are his communist veiws
DON'T NOT TAKE HIM! He was very boring to me and when he taught, i swear he lost me about 6 times within the 50 minutes class period. His tests are very hard. If you are not good in graphs, you will fail like I did. He does have assignments online but its only worth 10% of your grade which is NOTHIN! Has about 3 tests which are on the least 4 chapt
This class is very hard. If economics is not your major then do not take it!
This class isn't supposed to be this difficult, but he decides to make it much more difficult. Three exams (90% of class grade), each with 10 multiple choice questions (50% of exam) and 2 essays (50%). 10% based on homework. Barely gives points on the essays. Extremely picky. There was only one person with an "A" (after curve), mostly C's and less.
I have Taken Prin & Inter Macro with Gummerson. If you really want to learn about economics take this class. If you are one of those dumbass students who wants get easy grades DONT take this class. In order to pass his test you must UNDERSTAND the material. Not just read, KNOW. Best professor so far!!! Prepares you for harder classes to come.
This guy makes his tests so freaking difficult. i never get C's let alone B's and i must say he was my first C. i studied my ass off for all his tests and it was basically useless because he's so picky in gis grading. every little mistake in the test he takes crazy points off and seems to forget its a goddamn introductory course!
If this is not required for your major, take this course with another professor! The exams are a bit difficult and aplia assignments are only worth 10% of your grade! Attending class is a little helpful but not really but he often "tangents" from the topics at hand.
I took several econ courses with Dr. Gummerson - one of the best professors I've ever had. He teaches in a way that really sinks in, and he is fun to argue with. He may seem impatient at times, but he is always willing to explain things over and over until you understand. He's also very funny and easy going.
Great professor; his intro to macroeconomics class got me to major in economics. Take any classes he gives. You need to study and understand the material to do well on tests. His tests are more on the difficult side but it makes you actually learn the material. Tests are fairly curved too. I highly recommend him.
He knows the subject very well... Very good in teaching... funny... the assignments are very helpful... if you read the book, you will pass the test... I realized it at the end of the semester... lol...
awesome professor. knows alot about economics. Its a difficult class but not impossible, just requires your time. text book is a must!! uses it in class and also great for studying whats going to be on tests.
He's very knowledgeable about the subject, anything that you need him to clear up, he will do so very well. i honestly have no problems with this professor except that he gives alot of bw online, but its doable
Great professor. Knows his subject well...great style of teaching. If you want to really learn economics, take him. Funny professor makes class interesting and relates his explanations to real life making you understand the topic better.
He really knows what he's talking about. There are 3 tests and online homework on every chapter. It wasn't a hard class, just make sure you read the book. It's a must. The test aren't that difficult, just a bit tricky.
Do ALL econ portal assignments will make a huge difference in your grade. Going to class is helpful but its more important to read all chapters and do econ portal. Got a B without ever going to class but reading/studying textbook and doing econportal. He curves ;)
I don't really know much about the professor, so I can't say he is mean or anything, but his tests are VERY difficult and there is a ton of homework. I wouldn't recommend taking this course unless you were only taking 3 classes in total. It is quite hard to manage this class on top of others. (5 classes) 75% = Tests - 25% = Homework.
Easy class. I'm not sure why the people below me are complaining. I took this class and five other ones and still managed to get an "A". Just read the book, study the lectures, and do the Econportal assignments and you should do well. If you are lazy on the other hand, then you will do bad.
Truthfully. This is not an easy course. The whole hybird idea that FIU created for this course is ridiculous. The videotaped lectures are difficult to hear and super boring. The econ portal assignments are very frequent and lengthy. The tests are also very difficult.Be prepared to read the book from cover to cover.
Overall, the course is not too difficult but the way this class is taught is ridiculous; 400+ students to one professor. never went to class and managed to pass. A lot of reading on your own, 3 exams, and weekly homework. don't take with other time-demanding courses. read chapters, go to class, and you should pass.
Important: Look up FIU macro-site for details, and try putting his lectures on YouTube. :) In class, he repeats: "M'kay?" & "Does that make sense?". For obvious reasons, too many of my peers fail the class to easily; it's sad, because I never wrote notes and still aced this class. Just highlight the ebook (study) and find help for HW from anywhere.
If you were smart, you would have no problem passing this class; the grading scale is based on student performance. This semester, our "large" class forced 74.97%, overall, to be the requirement for the lowest A - there are no + and - letter grades. Also, he wears sandals, and, one time, he replaced his belt with a golden rope from a banner. Weird!
the way FIU does the lectures online is ridiculous. bases his grades on the performance of exams. passed with a 53% which was a C. takes up a lot a lot of time. read the book in depth and weekely hw online which is a lot of work too. basically, its a self-taught class.
I criticized this teacher for my performance, as did every student. But to be totally honest with you, this guy TRIES and Tried! I mean I did not watch/look at a lecture, and rarely cared for the homework! Yet I passed with a B, with his massive curve. With a basic knowledge of economics, you can pass this course! Its a Joke, with the curve!!
He knows a lot about Econ and has a way of bringing relevant applications to the content of the course. HOWEVER! When it comes down to really grasping the material, you should try to do so on your own time and THEN go to class if you wish. Blanchard's textbook is a leviathan! With that being said, his class is for the hardcore economic student.
This professor really knows his stuff. And most importantly, he knows how to teach it. Took his class in a hybrid format with proctored exams and online lectures. If you want an easy A for your econ classes take him every step of the way. It's not only easy, you actually learn something too. Certainly recommend him.
The guy is an economic genius, and knows how to teach it. You go to his classes and take notes, you're guaranteed the A simply because you'll learn it. If you try to watch it online and you're good about it, you'll be okay. But go in if you can.
Very good professor! Its a hard class (weekly online homework) but you will enjoy it, maybe. Try to go to the actual class instead of watching it online cause sometimes there are technical difficulties. I've got really good grades on the tests cause I read carefully the book and memorized the key concepts. If you study hard you will be fine :)
Very helpful teacher. I took macroeconomics wih him and even though the class isn't easy, he was always vey helpful. office hours with him really helped. If you slack on classes you will fail but if you don't youl will learn very valuable info. Overall great proffessor.
It's truly not his more than half of his students fail the exams. He really does TRY to teach us the material. 600 students and only one teacher is insane. Viewing online was stupid so I stopped because the homework and exams are based on the textbook so thats what I did. Massive curve. Expecting to receive a B. Get a study body to split the HW!
GREAT professor. Knows his stuff veryyyy well! Yes, the course is hard. Period. You need to study a lot to ace the exams and online hw. But that't just the beauty of it, people always think that college is just about getting an easy teacher and not learning anything. In his class you ACTUALLY learn!
Professor G really does know his stuff.. I reall learned a lot in his class... and yes, economics is not easy at first.but if you read the chapters more than once and grasp the concept you will do good :)I had to read the chapters more than once to understand it and do good in online hw and tests.READ THE BOOK!you have no idea how much it will help
I took the class but watched the lectures online, well barely. I will say he knows his stuff well! But the test is based more on the book. So if you read, read, and READ.. you'll pass easily. Also pay attention to the homework's, allot of the questions from it is on the test. Overall, he is a good teacher.
Economics sucks and this professor doesn't make it more interesting. He talked and talked that it made me not want to watch any video. I never went to the lectures and still did good on the tests. I basically taught myself. Only reason I liked this class was because attendance was not mandatory.
He was very intelligent, but not too good at teaching his students. Tests were HARD!!! hw's help your grade a lot though. Also there is a major curve, if you work really hard and read you can do well. A lot of it you'll have to teach yourself though, overall it's very tough but managable with a lot of studying
He made me want to study business. He was a great professor, and really know the things he's talking about. He curves good, and he will teach you a lot. Not exactly the easiest class, but not really hard either. You'll learn a lot.
I have never rated a professor before but i have to. The class was supposed to have 3 exams.we took too long to cover the first book so he made the first test 60%. only 6 people got an A with a curve being (75-90%) =A) If you are not an economic major. Dont take his class. does not believe in outside help. Only teaches what he believes (left side)
It's an alright class. Right now I'm taking it and it is pretty hard, but passable. You have to read the book and watch his lectures. It's preferable to read his powerpoints. It would be a very hard class without the curve that he gives. The easiest way to study for the test is by doing the learning curve and the self quiz.
He is a tough professor. He grades on a bell curve which can play to your advantage or ruin your grade. His tests are hard, based on the textbook so BUY IT!! Do listen in on the classes cause it makes the subject easier to understand. Do the homework!!! It helps you practice and have an idea how the tests are going to be.
His test are extremely hard made to confuse you. He does have a pretty big curve to help out.
Lectures are boring. Book isn't so bad. The exams are HARD. ADVICE: read the chapters, understand them, study them, and do the loooong homeworks.. you will get an A. The homeworks are long (takes about 2+ hrs) but is worth 25% so it helps with final grade. Gummerson is AWESOME because of his curve. Had a 75 & got an A. I was lucky the avg was low.
I think he's a great professor who really knows what he is talking about. Listen to his lectures and then read the book for review and you will be just fine. Only students who expect things handed to them were upset with him. Good class, expect to learn alot.
Great teacher. Knows what he's talking about and keeps class interesting. Tests are extremely hard and are straight from the text. Curves a lot. Has A bunch of online assignments that boost your grade. Passed with an A.
Wonderful professor really. Watch his lectures and do the homework, study for the tests and really you'll be fine. He curves about 10% on each test and your final grade also. He knows what he is talking about and is a great professor. You can certainly succeed in this class
He is not a terrible teacher but he definitely needs to have more clarity on the material he presents. The homework's are time consuming and the book does not explicitly explain the overall material he provides on the test. However, he gives good curves for the test which can ultimately help you. It is basically a teach yourself class.
Tests are extremely hard. He curved about 20 points down in our class. So 80% would equal an A and so on. After the curve on the first test, 2 people of 30 in class got an A. Do not recommend. Extremely hard on grading. I used the word "drops" on one of my tests and he marked it wrong and said it was "shifts down". Again, do NOT recommend.
Homework is online so find a buddy to do it together and is worth 1/4 of your grade. Overall I think this class is DO-ABLE you MUST STUDY THE BOOK and the professor IS VERY HELPFUL he's always there during his tutoring hours/office hours. Those that don't study are the ones complaining. There is a curve at the end. Overall it was a good class :)
The class is difficult but keep in mind that your grade is based on a class cure. I ended the class with a 79 which gave me an A. an A= 70 to 96. The test are very hard. STUDY THE BOOK! you dont have to watch lectures but make sure you know the book!
Great professor! Exams are very difficult, but his on-line videao lectures are super helpful in getting A in the class (that's what I got). You will need to study hard in his class, but you will also learn a lot! I loved this class! I highly recommend him and his class, TAKE HIM!!!
The class requires that you pay attention and study. All in all Gummerson is a great professor who explains concepts very well. He grades generously and often postpones hmwk. He made the class interesting..
I took his macroeconomics online-lectures class. Overall, he was a good prof, but the tests and the online quizzes were a little difficult. Studying the textbook is a must. I thought I was going to get a B+, but thanks to the curve at the end got an A. I would recommend him. I also suggest taking micro before macro, that helped me with this class.
He's is a great professor, knows he's stuff. If you have a passion for economics like I do, you should definitely take comparative economic systems with him. A lot of people find him difficult, because the exams are essay based but come on people your in college! He gives you the opportunity to write everything you learned in the exams!
While he reads off of powerpoints and the actual class may seem pointless, I find that he does know his material and his lessons offer a more concise rendition of the text chapters. Although, you still have to read the text in depth to do well on the tests. His online homework is EXTREMELY helpful for the test, so I suggest you put plenty of time.
His class is lecture capture so you technically don't have to attend. Exams are CRAZY hard but he does huge curves. He told us that 200/700 people currently have an F! I am a business major and this is by far my hardest class.
I took this class because it was the only one open and I did not listen to what people had to say about this class :( it's very hard and I consider myself smart. The tests are completely different from what we learn and he does not prepare you well for exams. I would not take this class!
One of the first classes I took at FIU and it was terrible. His class lectures are a joke and not worth the time. Exams are ridiculously hard, but there's a huge curve. Read the book and attend the free tutoring provided and you should be fine.
Took him for principals of macro. Impossible to pass. HUGE CURVE! Go to his office hours, he is actually very nice and cares about the subject. He helps you out if he sees that you make an effort.
The class is a video lecture. The course is difficult and the test are impossible. The homework (online) does help, but is time consuming. I would recommend this class ONLY if you are interested in the macroeconomics of the country. He is a great person though and knows his information.
Too hard exams!! Don't take this instructor!
Amazing professor! Watch all his lectures and read the chapters and you'll be fine. His gives generous curves on all 3 exams. Homework is difficult and takes 2 hours or more to finish, but only counts for 10% of your grade.
The class is easy, you must watch all the lectures but he teaches the material clearly, much better than other professors, so far the best teacher I've had, whoever says he is difficult is either lazy or is expecting high school level courses, Got A+ after massive curve (would have gotten a 120 if it was possible because he gave a 30+ point curve)
Class is available thru video lectures for those that can't make it to campus. He explains well, but it's all in the book. The hardest part are the exams which have tricky questions/answers and the long homeworks. I don't recommend him!
He was the only teacher that taught the class, and wasn't that bad. It could have been worse. Just do the homework and study the textbook. His lectures aren't that important unless he's explaining graphs. And he curves the grade A LOT!
The class is very difficult. Everything is remotely easy until you take the first of three test…Professor Gummerson is a nice guy, but obviously has an ego issue. It would be a much better class if he would KEEP IS POLITICAL VIEWS OUT OF THE CLASS! This classroom is to teach macro, not to try and bash political parties.
Took this class Fall 2012. It is no easy class. Three exams that are hard and homework which is only worth 10 percent and at times can be hard. Attendance is not mandatory. Lectures of the class are available online. Make sure you read the textbook in order to pass the class.
The topic itself is hard but he does a really good job explaining. DO NOT rely on the book, watch his lectures and you'll understand. He explains really well
I saw that he had good reviews for ECO2013, but for Intermediate Macro, he is just the worst. He pushed the $130 binder textbook from the book store and only used it for the first test. He weighted the first test heavily even though the average was 52%. There's an 18 point curve, so a 52 = 70/C. Homework's only 10% and isn't on the test.
I loved taking this class and strongly recommend it. It can be tricky but Mr. Gummerson is an excellent professor. It is absolutely necessary to attend lectures or look at them online or you will be lost. If you need help he is radily available to do so
Gummerson knows is Economics but explains a little fast, i recommend you invest a lot of time re-reading the text book and watching is lectures online, most of the test is on that rather than the hw. Its not easy class but its very manageable and if you put effort you can easily pass with a A-B

The class is called Comparative Economics. It should be called socialistKeynesian economics. Macro and micro are prerequisites. You will be required to forget everything you know about economics, and learn by heart the theories of his idol Paul Krugman. The class begins by blaming everything wrong with the economy on Republicans. Yup.
Gummerson is a very hard class you only take 3 test. Each of which are 2 hours long. Have chapter homework assignments when are only 10% of your grade. Have to watch the videos to pass.
Unless it's mandatory or you really enjoy economics do not take this class. This class requires a lot studying and there are three exams that are 90% of your grade. You really need to study to pass this class. Read the book! The book is a godsend because you can't survive off his lectures alone. He records his lectures online.
This class is extremely hard. He does hold lectures every MWF, but since the class is so huge he doesn't require them to be mandatory. He post his lectures online which is kinda helpful if you make the effort to watch them. Also his lectures move way to fast, and the material its self is just hard. if you can avoid taking him, DO IT!!
If you are dedicated to reading the textbook, than you should be fine. Attending the lectures are a personal preference, but it really doesn't help. Just watch the videos and read the textbook and you should be fine. But trust me, you need a lot of self discipline so it is harder than it sounds. Good Luck!
It's Macro, ain't going to be easy. The lectures are not important, it's all book. He's a great professor and if you go to his lectures you will see that. He really knows whet he is teaching. Curve is amazing and extremely fair.
If you're taking the classes that have 400+ students, do not attend lectures. Just read the book like it was a bible and you'll do fine on the exams. His curve was god-like in my semester with him. It was very very kind of him. Requires plenty of self discipline. 90% of his grade is the 3 exams. 10% is homework. So just read!
Exams are tough. Does not offer extra credit, but curves exams.
If you do not need it DO NOT take this class. This class is such a pain. The tests are IMPOSSIBLE there is honestly no point in studying. the only thing that saves people is that he has a tremendous curve at the end but not everyone passes. I was less than a point away from passing and i emailed him begging for the point and he said no.
His tests are TOUGH! they're the 90% of the grade so you NEED to study! Going to the lectures is not necessary at all since he just explains the same things that are on the book. If you're looking for a challenge, take him. He curved a lot though, I failed the three tests and ended up getting a C.
He is a good professor and he really knows his stuff. If you're the type to go to class with your ipod on and not paying attention to anything, you will fail. You MUST read, you MUST study because his exams are the only grades. Fail one, and you're done for the semester. He is not easy, but if you ask him to clarify he will. His curves are generous
This class was really hard. Going to the class is not necessary because he records his lectures and basically explains everything that you can read yourself in the textbook. The exams are crazy hard and worth 90% of your grade. The good thing about his class is he gives a huge curve at the end. I failed every exam and passed the class with a C.
This class is hard! Do not take this class if you're not ready to get on your knees and pray for a C! Some people fail all three tests and pass because he curves A LOT but that only works for people above the average. If you need an extra point to get you to the next letter grade at the end HE WILL NOT GIVE IT TO YOU so work hard.
What I read over here, negative comments about him, that's all BS. You have to attend the classes, YOU HAVE TO STUDY the book if you want to get an A. And its not hard. Truth is macroeconomics is a complex and logical subject, you cant magically answer the test questions if you don't. Plus, I love his passionate political commentaries!
Class isn't mandatory, he gives 3 tests, and clearly defines what will be on each one. Easy class if you attend or regularly watch the videos, just don't leave studying to the last minute because each test has a lot of material. He has clear office hours and is there for you. As long as you think clearly you will be just fine.
He is a great teacher. If you must take Macro, take him. There is at least one homework due online every two weeks but the homework really helps you understand the subject. It is really easy to get an A if you attend his lectures and do the homeworks. The 3 exams are just like the homework. Do what I did and just keep reviewing to get an A.
One of the best teachers I have ever had. Although the course is a little hard and time consuming, his lectures are really good and if you do not want to attend class, like I did, you can watch his lectures online. There is a lot of homework but it helps a lot in understanding the concept and getting ready for the test.
Fantastic professor, without question the best professor I've had at FIU. The key to passing this course (like in many others) is to read the textbook prior to his lectures. There's no way you can memorize the content for tests, get ready to study up. Dr. G was even willing to help me out with things that weren't pertinent to the course. 5/5
Lectures are recorded but I suggest going to class if you can. The textbook is ESSENTIAL to passing, lectures can help clear some things up. Homework due every once in a while, but it helps you understand the material better. This class is no joke, but the curve ended up being nuts; a 66+ was an A. If you really wanna understand economics, take him
**KNOW your stuff and you'll do great. Not mere memorization. Study until you achieve mastery. That means watching the lectures online, analyzing the textbook, and practicing. Do that, and you'll do great. The tests are *hard* because it asks near questions like, "Is it spelled Blue, or Bleu?" and you literally just have to know which is correct.
Really great professor. His lectures are great and he really knows his stuff. Going to class is not mandatory but if you want to ensure you pass, you should stick through all his lectures. Overall very knowledgeable professor.
Honestly this class is really interesting and he's a great professor. BUT it's brutal and it's a lot of information to process and to really think about. The key to success in this class is to go to his office hours, he really helps you out a lot I'm no genius and I passed with an A. Study hard, read the book/ watch the videos and you'll be fine :)
He is an amazing economics professor and you can tell he loves what he preaches. Can be a difficult class, you have to stay on top of the lectures, readings and study hard for the exams!! They divided equally on theory and actual calculations. Curves final grades. Even though it is difficult he is a great professor you will learn!
Overall it's difficult but if you put the time and effort in, you will pass. He has three tests that make up 90% of your grade. He has a pretty generous curve but you still need to study in order to pass the exams. It is interesting when the prof talks about current events since they will usually tie in with what he is teaching that day.
Nice guy but pretty hard class. However, if you are willing to invest your heart and soul in this class it is very possible to get an A. He records his lectures and posts them on blackboard, but I promise it is smart to go to class. HW is due every other week, sometimes consecutive weeks. There are three tests and they mostly consist of the book.
He's a decent professor can't complain but the test are incredibly hard and consist of the textbook entirely. Do all the home works, read, and pray to God you understand the material or the very least pass the class.
If you aren't ready to memorize an entire textbook, don't take this class. His curves are outrageous though. I got an F and it curved to a C+.
terrible teacher, hard test, honestly have never even gotten a C in any college course and have taken some difficult classes. Now, i probably have to drop this course. This guy is horrible and shouldn't make his test so difficult. Must avoid this teacher at all cost
Ridiculous class and professor. Tests are incredible hard even studying the entire chapter. Professor knows the material, but he doesn't know how to teach properly. Try to avoid him if it is hard for you to memorize the book.
the lectures are very informative and very helpful
This class is very difficult and on top of that he is not a great professor. He could explain the material better but doesn't. The only reason I passed this class was because of the massive curve. If you can take this class with a different professor who is much better at explaining the material. There is HW due about every week.
The lectures are long and dry makes it hard to keep up. His exams are tricky and extremely difficult. Unless you have a passion for the subject you won't pass this class. I took it with a different professor online and did better.
AVOID this professor, he is HIGHLY politically motivated (strictly forbidden) and does not know the subject of Economics, Keynesian Economics is pretty much a Socialist's version of Economics (they literally invented it) and is highly misinforming to us. I usually do not attend lectures because of his biased lectures. DON'T TAKE THIS PROFESSOR!
i would NOT take this class. he is difficult, he doesn't explain well, his tests are impossible, his homework takes all your time. i had to drop it because he has a curve but it doesn't do anything. do not take this class do not take this class do not take this class.
Do not take this professor no matter what! He is the worst professor ever. Take the class online or with anyone else. His lectures have nothing to do with whats going to be on the tests. His lectures consist of math and equations and the tests consist of theory and vocabulary, no matter what do not take him.
You'll pass if you take the class seriously and do all the homework. The curve is ridiculous. He's too politically motivated for my liking. Always finds a way to bring up his leftist views.
Very good teacher, posts every lecture online, and his tests are based on his lectures and textbooks.
Biggest mistake I've ever made. Lectures three times a week and posts them online. Two part homework and self test quiz and test due every week. More than half the class is FAILING. Studied for 1st test for 5 days, got a 63. Studied for 2nd test for almost two weeks AND got a tutor, got a 34. He gives heavy curves and yet the class average is a 49.
First semester of college and I got stuck in a class were I have to watch the lectures online and the teacher doesn't explain anything. The tests are pretty much impossible mainly due to the fact most answers were never directly taught to us, or ever mentioned before. The online homework every week was tedious, difficult, and unnecessary.
This is a demanding class. He seems to know a lot about the subject but honestly doesn't prepare students for what's going to be on exam. All he says is to memorize the book. Take him if you can focus and teach yourself otherwise, don't. He does curve so you benefit if you perform above average without the curve.
This is a challenging class. Gummerson makes this very clear on the 1st day of class. If ur expecting to just listen to the lectures and get an A , then ur in the wrong class. Read the book, understand the homework, practice, and you'll be fine. If you need help there's plenty of FREE tutoring on campus(what helped me). Also, there's a HUGE curve!
The material was confusing and hard. His lectures are long and boring but he does the best to help you understand the material. Just read, study, and review the chapter quizzes from the HW before each exam (questions on chap quizzes are similar to exams). He curves A LOT. As long as you somewhat know the material you should be fine (I barely did).
Prof Gummerson is smart, but has a very strong opinion. Class is about the Great Recession, how it happened, and how it should've been ended earlier. The book is by Krugman so it leans left; but, all analysis is backed up by real-world data. Grade is made up by 3 exams, all of which are very hard, but the curve is extremely generous.
He is an excellent professor and is especially clear with the material, and what you need to do to pass the class. You have to read the textbook and learn the material. If you read the textbook -- he blatantly tells you most of the test questions are from the book test bank. If you understand the text, you'll be fine.
I'm glad that FIU acquired him as a professor. He's truly inspirational and really knows his Keynesian economics. There's online HW and 4 solid exams and that's it. I've had a great semester learning from him and hearing his side stories. Don't see why he has an over 3.5 rating. I think he's pretty cool.
If you don't take his class at 8am and spend until 6pm in the library, this class is not for you. He does a disservice to students and the school by putting his interests first. Will never go out of his way to stop and break concepts down. He should not be teaching introductory courses because he assumes you should know everything in life already
I took this class twice(once in HS),&it was not a terribly hard class.(I got a 58 and that curved to a B).There is a good amount of homework, but it does a great job of teaching you the material,so if you don't want to read the textbook, you don't really need to.I saw Gummerson3times(for the tests)and he was always nice. He posts live lectures online
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. Honestly was the worst class I have taken. He is rude and not helpful AT ALL. The lectures are not mandatory but even if you wanted to go it is impossible. The class has 600 people and they assign him a classroom that fits 100. The tests are impossible and his curve does nothing.
Very inflexible professor.
I created an account just to state how awful Gummerson was when I had him towards the start of my college career. Based on his final curve, I was able to just make the mark to get an A but 2 weeks later, when grades were posted, I had a B. When I asked him he was extremely dismissive, saying he had "wasted too much time" after 2-3 emails between us
