Very knowledgable in his subjects. Seems to enjoy teaching the class
Look, the guy is nice, but totally unpredictable, tells good stories though
Great guy, kinda cheesy, pretty easy class WHEN HE SHOWS UP AT 8 AM!
Interesting & easy. Did not show for 8am class alot. Didn't cover Zeppelin..wtf
Cool class, good music, Still trying to figure out where Q's from exam came from
Late to class everyday, boring, rambled on,didnt get to cover everything! He sucks!
He's very unsympathetic when it comes to the reports, TQ's from outer space
Enjoys what he does. Easygoing and tardy often. No clue where he got his TQ's.
unsympathetic, doesn't give you an idea of what will be on the test
Do yourself a favor..DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!
Music was good, he was not, always late to class, even exams! Test ?s bogus
he rambles a lot about useless sh*t. Don't take class if you don't have to.
He knows SO much about music -Great class -don't listen to everyone els
very nice guy, interesting and easy info but you need to show up for class
Okay, whoever said this class was terrible has half a brain. Unhelpful at times, yes, but he made the class really enjoyable. Recommended for anyone who likes music.
Terrible instructor
no idea where test questions come from. class doesnt get interesting untill end of sem. DONT TAKE
Good class. 90% of the course requires just listening to music. Exams are MC & TF. Knows his Rock history. Too bad it's at 8am.
He doesn't care about students. Fire this guy. He's also a****.
absolutely loved this class. if you like music at all, definitely take it. easiest A i've gotten at this school. test questions come straight from lectures, contrary to what other people have said.
Absolutely the worst excuse for a musician. The band under his direction was an dark spot in the history of the university. They should have fired him! High brass was joke. What were they thinking? Thanks for nothing Al!
Some interesting course material, wish he had been more specific in things to study for exams...WRITE DOWN THE RANDOM STUFF FROM LECTURE-those are the type of things he puts on exams
tests are fair... just make sure to show up for class
hist of rock was awesome!! i took it on monday nights, it was a lot so i would recomend taking it MWF. the class was one of my favorites. you have to go to class and if you take it on monday nights you don't get to leave early. worth the time and you will learn alot about how music has evolved.

This guy is so cool, he knows everything about music and he really loves teaching his students about it. His face lights up during listening examples. Interesting class if you like music, fairly easy grade
Fun class...recommended, but don't skip class and read the book! Tests are pretty difficult, but over 100 Q's so it's easy to pass...REMEMBER THE LISTENING EXAMPLES...he tests a whole lot on those, like dates and stuff even
Really incredible class to take if you have an interest in rock music. You will appreciate the influences between styles and artists after the class is over. Exams are really detailed so you need to know your stuff to do well! Dates are popular questions, and so is the stuff you think is not important. The littliest thing can be a question.
Not an easy A at all, have to go to class and pay attention to everything, exam questions tend to come out of the blue. The material is interesting but he is not particularly enlightening on it.
the test questions for this class are so ridiculous. like some really random crap on there. "fast v. really fast?" yeah.. WHO THE HELL KNOWS.
Interesting material, but hard tests. He curves a lot though and with over a 100 questions it's easy to get a good grade. Be interested in who you write the biography on and it'll be a better class.
Tests were easy (if you showed up to class) and grading was fair. The papers were simple and he was a great prof. I'd take another class with him again.
This class was very interesting, but not at all what I expected it to be. Show up for every class and take good notes. If you do that, you're pretty much guaranteed a B or higher. Don't bother buying the textbook, I never opened mine. Grade is based upon 4 exams (all multiple choice) and 2 concert reports.
class material is really interesting...important to go to every class to do well
Interesting, but not the easiest class in the world. Go to every class!!!!!!!!
not as easy as everyone says...Even if you go to class, the exams tend to be difficult, and beware of the bright orange paper...
1)this class was awesome if you love music 2) you kinda never really know whats going on becuase he jumps around A LOT 3) his jokes really arent that funny 4) His 80ish T/F tests suck but he curves a lot... Bottom line: if you like music and you dont need an A this class is great.. if you dont LOVE music or if you need an A.. STAY FAR AWAY!
very easy and interesting class, tests are a joke and are only hard if you miss class, then you miss out on the listening examples. can pass the class if you dont go, but if you go its an Easy and fun A.
This class is awesome. If you have any interest in music and enjoy learning about different artists and genres, then definitely take this class. Even though people say the tests are confusing, they aren't too bad. All the teacher does is play movies and music exampmles. Overall one of my favorite classes I've taken at delaware.
The class is pretty interesting and not diffcult. Its best to know something about music and to be interested. Dr. Hamant -however- is rude and arrogant. He is absolutely unwilling to help students. He has missed several pre-arranged meetings with me and is all around unreliable. Attendance is a MUST.
this class was really awesome, especially if you love rock. the class is really easy as long as you go to class. you never have to crack open the book. it's a great class and i highly reccomend every one take it, ESPECIALLY if you love rock.
This guy is an ****.. he takes the class way too seriously and asks opinionated, vague date oriented, and name based (there are hundreds of members in all the bands he convers) questions. Do not take this class with Hamant as the professor.
super nice guy. interesting class. tests are a little rough, but hes very interested and dedicated to what hes teaching.
Prof. expects no under 40 to even know anything about Classic Rock. Tests are a breeze if you take notes and look at the handouts. Don't take winter session class, seeing as where the class only went as far as to breezing over Zeppelin the day before the exam.
Very knowledgeable. Attendance in lectures is a must, but he definatly knows his stuff and for anyone who is interested in the history of rock, this is definalty someone to learn it from.
Do not take this class. Professor expects you to know everything. Book did not help that much, dont bother buying it. Test were majority true/flase, which are NOT easy. Also matching on test which are unbelieveably hard. Five page paper due at the end of the semester which can be on any artist. If you are taking this class good luck!!!!
I was expecting to take a class on the history of rock. . instead we spent 2 months on jazz alone then breezed though the rock n' roll era the last week of the semester. Not a fan.
Rambles in class. Questions on exams are out of no where! End up sleeping the entire class its sooo boring. It sounds like an easy class but its not! Only good part was the listening samples.
SUPER boring, not at all what you would think the class would be. But he grades on a curve, and even though I missed a bunch of classes, I got a B-. Oh yea, don't buy the text cause you never use it!
It's really important that you go to class. He's a really cool guy but the tests are hard! Especially the listening examples! Not an easy A. But the class is definitely interesting.
A terrible class. I don't recommend it, unless you already know the History of Rock in exquisite detail. Expects you to memorize his every word from the lectures. Book is useless. Paper at end is poorly explained. Doesn't really teach you anything.
takes what could be an interesting class and ruins it by rambling on about things that he won't test on and going off on tangents. extremely boring. if you are going to subject yourself to this terrible class, don't bother buying the book, you never use it
He is so boring. He gives everyone the same test and people can sit literally right next to each other. You can never go to class and pull off a B. If you are expecting to learn about bands like Zep and Aerosmith prepare for dissapointment. He spends so much time on blues and jazz he just scratches the folk rock.
What others are saying is not right. He is a nice guy who knows his stuff. Go to class expecting to learn cool stuff. If you just want to learn Hendrix and Led Zep, don't take this class. If you have a genuine appreciation for music, take this :)
This class isn't what you'd expect, but you still learn a lot how rock was became what it is today. I thoroughly enjoyed the info. As for the people who said attendance is mandatory - I have to disagree. Not only did I not take one page of notes, I barely went to class and still ended up with an A. Test are CAKE if you know anything about Rock.
He's a really nice guy who definitely knows what he's talking about. I would totally recommend him. Test are tricky, hard to get an A. B's are totally attainable. Not a cake class.Go to lecture and read. You'll def get a B
HORRIBLE COURSE: DO NOT TAKE: Exams are SO confusing: He asks you to study a million songs&ask you to know the bands with them. When the EXAM comes around he wont just play a song and put the bands names as multiple choice, he'll instead trick you and put down random individual band member's names, which he never mentioned you had to know.
This course is very tough and should not be a 100-level class. The teacher is not very good and he is sub-par when it comes to administering quality exams. He tries to trick you on the tests, thus not investing his time into making sure you learn the material. Very frustrating. I agree with the comments below.
This class is labeled wrong. It should be Hist. of Jazz, Country and Rock. Also, Hamant is a passionate professor who gets his point across. He's a talented musician as well. You need to go to class in order to get an A. One thing that really pisses me off though is that he takes over a week and a half to get a test grade that's only M.C. back.
it covers everything up to rock music, including folk, country, jazz, r&b, and everything in between. His test ?s are confusing and he expects u to memorize small details. Def attend class, and exams are MC and skim the book to fill-in class notes. Would avoid this prof if u're looking for an easy A.
Do not take this course looking for an easy A. During the lectures he rambles on about things he thinks are interesting, not actual material that will be on test. Makes note taking very difficult. Tests are incredibly specific and difficult. Take theater or something if you wanna drift through a class.
I actually took this course a couple years back when I was a freshman (I am a senior now), and I will now give you the algorithm to dominating this class, though it is kinda lame: TAPE RECORD EACH LECTURE. Listen to them before each test and re write your notes. You will get everything you need. This is what you must do, now just do it and get an A
Partly agree, partly disagree with some of these reviews-He DOES ramble ("I'm gonna play this little video clip, but first let me preface it by saying...(45 minutes later)...". That being said, this class IS interesting, and if you actually show up and take notes, you'll be fine. I didn't even buy the book and I'm getting a B+. Just enjoy it!
don't listen to the other reviews. if you actually are interested in rock, folk music, and jazz, then you will love this class. its NOT a joke class and definitely not an easy A, but if you take notes and go to class you should come out with a B. its extremely interesting if you are actually into the subject
Go to class, the hard part is his exams have some bias/opinion which is annoying but half the questions are true/false. When taking notes, write down every name, date, description of music style, and song and you will do fine. I never studied and got high 80s on the exams, but I went to every class.
NOT AN EASY A OR FUN CLASS. if you think this will be a fun interesting class and don't know much about music don't take this class! You need to know your stuff
Do not take this class looking for an easy A. I've played an instrument basically my whole life and thought I would like the class, but NO. He rambles on and the exams are ridiculously hard. He expects you to remember everything he says. I hate him. It's so hard to pay attention in class. Don't take it.
This class is not what you would expect. Notes are hard to take because he rambles. The first three months are spent learning about blues, jazz, country...pretty much everything but rock. Tests are pretty hard but mostly true/false. I hardly studied or took notes and managed to get As and Bs on the tests. But I would not recommend this class.
88% of the class is based on tests. Tests are long, and maybe more than 100 questions. If you don't do well on the tests, you're screwed. I was able to manage a B+ in this class. I would not recommend it to anyone. Stressful for a 100-level class. PICK SOMETHING ELSE FOR BREATH REQUIREMENT!!!
I think a lot of people automatically think that this is a "fluff" course since it covers rock & roll, etc. that requires little/no work. As long as you show up to class, pay attention, and take notes, you'll be fine. Sure, he rambles on at times, but overall not too bad of a teacher.
This class has changed a lot from previous semesters. He rambles a lot and mentions things briefly in passing then expects you to know the background information of it. Exams are poorly worded and confusing, wouldn't recommend this class if you're looking for something easy. It's still really interesting, though.
Class is boring. Nice guy but talks way to much and his tests are hard. You have to study a lot for them if you want to get a good grade. The class is also easier if you have some kind of musical background.
I really enjoyed this class. I thought his comments were always insightful and found that he was really knowledgable about the history of rock. However, going to lectures is necessary if you want to get an A. Tests are really easy if you went to lectures. Not much studying necessary.
Do not take this class for an easy A. Like a previous rater said, "record his lectures." seriously. Everything you need to know is in his lectures, the textbook is practically useless and his exams are hard. It WAS an interesting class but difficult.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. so boring so annoying to study for and tests are actually hard
Alan Hamant is an insightful professor. People complain about this class because most (and I mean, next to all college students) do not have any knowledge as to the history of rock and roll. A little disappointed that we did not cover more--but you cover so much in a single semester. I highly recommend this class to lovers of rock history.
Boring boring boring and hard to pay attention in class so you don't remember the information. Then he puts it on a quiz or midterm and you cant remember anything. The class stinks!
This is a HISTORY of Rock course, not "the study of modern rock"; it's is for people who appreciate all kinds of music. Easy if you have background in music, but can be a challenge if you don't. He's a good professor if you bother to listen in class (most sleep and wonder why they don't understand the material). Exams are long but not too hard.
Overall your grade in this class is based on your note taking and listening skills. He talks about everything that is going to be on his exams however, he may only say a specific piece of information once. The class is not impossible if you show up, but it is certainly not an "Easy A".
do not take this class. hamant is a cool guy but a terrible professor. he rambles and has ridiculous expectations for any student. tests are mostly subjective true/false questions and ask for random members of bands.
I loved this class. I took it online and had like a 100 average. The information is super interesting if you listen and the exams are all questions straight from the lectures. I have a bit of a background in music which probably helped me but still, he really knows his stuff. Just listen and take notes and you'll be fine. Never used the textbook.
Great class, you'll do great if you attend each class, take good notes and study the listening examples he sends out.
Pretty interesting and somewhat easy class. You have 20 lectures around 80 min each. 4 tests and 2 concert reviews (no cumulative final). All test questions come from lecture and listening examples, which consist of the songs and facts. Questions pretty straightforward. Never used the textbook don't get it. Had to use proctor ($25 per test).Take it
Professor Hamant is really nice, and he's a very passionate and talented musician. He's a good lecturer, but he's very disorganized. You can't skip class because all the material on the exams comes directly from his lectures. Don't buy the textbook: you don't use it at all. I studied his lectures and my notes, and I got over a 100 on every test.
If you show up to class and pay attention to what he is saying, you will have no problem. He tells you everything you need to know in class, and I really enjoyed this class.
You don't have to go to get an A if you have common sense and some minimal prior knowledge of the material.
Lectures are insanely boring. Dont bother getting the text it is completely unrelated to his lectures. Most of the time he goes off on tangents. Tests are memorization, dont take this class thinking you will get an easy A or B.
It's extremely necessary to go to class. However, the lectures are long and the confusing. It's hard to decipher what is important for the class and will be on the test versus what he's just talking about just to talk about. He's a big time story teller.
He seems very knowledgeable and passionate about what he teaches, but he rambles and goes on and on about one, thing very often. You will not pass unless you listen to the lectures and take notes.
While Hamant seems very knowledgeable he goes on and rambles quite a bit in his lectures, which means you need to really pay attention. He talks about things not on the slides but on the test in between unimportant information. Tests are easy if you pay good attention otherwise prepare for hours of studying. Gives huge curves on the tests though.
Tough class for entry level, beware if you're an underclassman. You need to go to class and take good notes in order to perform on the exams as they're based on lectures and handouts and not the book. Tests were tricky, make sure you know everything about the music samples.
DO NOT GO TO CLASS THE TEXTBOOK IS ALL YOU NEED FOR THE TESTS he puts everything you need to know on sakai for the exams but you can read the book to understand it. He doesn't even make the tests and his lectures are completely irrelevant to the material.
Hamant loves rock n roll, but he really does ramble, and closes his eyes when he talks. I never even cracked the textbook and i don't know how much it applied, but definitely go to class and pay close attention/take good notes because he doesn't give any handouts or homework or quizzes. Know all the listening examples and specifics for the tests.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS AS A BREADTH REQUIREMENT. You need to know the most specific and ridiculous information for the tests, and while I thought the class would be interesting, his lectures put me to sleep. Not a fun class!!!
Do not take this guy. He is unclear and rambles. Very unclear of what's important and what's not important. His notes are terrible. Do not take him!!
Not a music lover, only took for credit. Lecture is long and boring. Class is not too hard, just put in time memorizing all the facts. Test are tough only because a lot of material is on it which isn't mentioned in class. Memorize names of band members. Textbook was not used once. No homework. Two papers which are concert reviews.
I sat in the front row and I really hit it off with Alan. Fantastic musician and really knows his stuff. It felt like I was just listening to a legend. If you love music but didn't major in it, this class is fantastic.
Pretty good prof and doesn't take attendance. Closes his eyes when he speaks and shows a lot of videos. Class is boring at first until you start to recognize the artists and songs you're learning about. You should definitely read the chapters assigned. Tests are a little unfair in my opinion but its easy to get in the 80s without studying too hard.
Hamant is a great professor. He's funny & tells interesting stories. Don't need the book. No quizzes. There's 4 exams (which he always curves), & 2 concert reports. Go to class. He rambles sometimes. First few classes can be a little boring, but the rest are great. I always wanted to go to class. His lectures are very interesting.
This class is all based off lecture where Hamant just spews out information with his eyes closed for an hour and 15 minutes. If you wanna pass, you have to go to class and take notes, he doesn't use any kind of visuals while presenting, which makes it hard for you to get all the information down
Very interesting, makes you take notes on everything he says. Curves the H-E-double hockey stick, out of his exams.
Class is interesting after first month. I would not recommend for anyone who does not have a car on campus. All tests are taken in testing center near acme. I ubered to every one. You must also attend 2 concerts which can cost money and it's annoying. Tests are 100 questions online including listening portions. Do not take for breadth!
It's an ok class for someone who isn't big into R&R. I took it as a breath, definitely low effort. Curves EVERY. ONE. OF. HIS. EXAMS by 10+ points. He goes super fast, and everything he says is on the test (but there are some things that isn't covered that still is). Use the online resources and STUDY THE MUSIC EXAMPLES. Needs a course capture
Exams are all based of the lecture (don't buy the book) and are curved a RIDICULOUS amount. Exams are at the testing center, which is annoying. Also there are concert reports (very easy). Look on the music departments webpage or check out mainstreet ($). Lectures are SUPER boring at points and half the time it won't seem related to rock at all.
his class is interesting, and he curves the grades
No textbook, no assignments, 4 tests. Tests are about 100 questions each, completely based on lecture. My advice, record the lecture and save them to study from because even the most random detail will be on the test. At the same time, I walked out of the test averaging a C all year and ended with an A because of HUGE curves
If you don't like music, I don't recommend this class. I came in with a pretty strong background, so it wasn't as bad as many say. Don't buy the textbook; the exams are only on lecture (so write EVERYTHING down). Tests are curved 10-15 points AT LEAST on every exam. Also, have a friend with a car bc the exams are at the testing center.
Honestly this class isn't as bad as everyone at UD says it is. I put in the bare minimum amount of effort and barely went to class, and I'm going to get a B/B+. Use quizlets to study because only some of the information he lectures about will show up on the test considering he doesn't even make it. Exams were curved 10-20 points each
Alan really enjoys music and his stories are weird and funny but his lectures do nothing to prepare you for the exam. I guess on almost every question. Ive never gotten higher than a 75 on a test but there is always at least a ten point curve. And going to the testing center is such a pain. Alan is such a character but its really not worth it.
lectures are basically just him taking about music, only covers about 50% of test material, he does not even mention exams during lecture because he doesn't even know what is on them. curves a lot and tests are taken at the testing center which is a pain to get to. there are much easier history breadths to take.
I rarely write bad reviews on here but I don't want to lie to anybody. This guy sucks. Makes absolutely no mentions of exams at any given time. Does not help you prepare or guide you as to what you should study. Hard to discern what to take notes on, but it might as well be everything because anything the guy says in lecture seems to be fair game.
Do not take History of Rock and Roll. Yeah, it sounds like a dope class, but this dude sucks. You will fall asleep in the Lectures and no matter what or how much you study, the tests will still be a foreign language. Everyone fails the tests so bad he curves 15 points on almost every exam. Just save yourself the struggle and dont take it.
Hamant is a very interesting guy, and if you're passionate about rock and roll, you will probably enjoy this class. Tests are at the testing center, which is a pain, and he can be unclear as to what is going to be on the tests. Luckily though, all tests are massively curved, so it's hard to fail this class. Study, take notes, and you'll be fine.
Literally sits in front of class and reads the textbook, without a textbook. Hated this class, but I was impressed at how he remembered the whole textbook throughout his miserable hour and fifteen minute lectures. Monotone, goes off topic, really bad class. DO NOT TAKE.
My least favorite class I have taken at UD. I was so excited because I love history and rock and roll, but this class was unbearable! I made it to the first few weeks of class before discovering that the lectures had nothing to do with the tests (120 questions). You have to do well on the tests because there are no other grades!!! Do not take!!
