He's a new teacher this year but he was extremely chill and down to earth. He's in his late 20s I think, so he's understandable and funny. Great sense of humor!
He is a new teacher but is amazing! He finds stories and discussions that are very interesting and relate to things that we would want to read about. We had to write 3essays and 2 of which we did in class workshops on. He is very available and promotes you going to office hours. He has a great sense of humor which is def a plus.
Great teacher tried to look him up on here but he didn't show up but I love him GREAT teacher super funny and has a lot of sarcasm easy work just don't take his class for granted and you'll get a easy A
Haslam is a great professor. Class was interesting and made me want to participate in discussions. Take him! As long as you do your work it's an easy A.
Although very few ratings, all of them are pretty accurate. He is a young and new teacher who is very lenient and funny. 3 essays (last one is the final) grades pretty easy because this is a writing development class. Helps students a lot. Easy A if you do all the class work and do okay on essays.
Great teacher. Loved the concepts of the class and the reading material.
Super fun and chill. His class consists of 1 warm up essay, 3 essays and easy short responses online. Lectures are all reading discussion, and NOT boring compared to other English classes. Gives EXTRA CREDITS. Take him!!!
take his ENGL118. you will not regret it. no text book. two in-class essay at the beginning and the end of semester. easy topics that helps you develop your critical thinking and being ready for ENG122. I will take his ENG123 for sure.
Great class! I had a fun time and some really interesting discussions. The workload is pretty simple: read and write a discussion board. Then talk about it in class. 3-4 essays, the first one is informal and the later ones are interesting to write about as well. More participation from the class would make it even better, so speak up more :)
Seriously understands life as a college student and tries to go with the flow of the class. Adjusts syllabus and drops assignments when needed. Best to go to class - all about class discussions and participation, if students aren't responding he'll lecture but keeps us entertained. Overall 4 essays (first is a warm upabout me), 7 reading responses
I absolutely love him and can say he's been my favorite professor at DVC. Definitely made it feel like you were learning with a good friend. I really liked material we covered in his sci-fi unit. learned a lot of writing errors I was doing during peer workshop. Gives good feedback.
Haslam is my favorite teacher in dvc so far. He is very kind, funny and helpful. There are 3 main essays for the semester and each of them are very easy. He also gave very high grade on your paper. Take him and you will not regret.
Haslam is definitely one of my favorite teachers by far. He is hilarious and his class is so entertaining. Although we were everywhere, I liked what I learned from the discussions. It was one of those classes you look forward to going to. I would love to take this class again or any of his other classes.
Professor Haslam is great! I took his Sci Fi Lit class only because he's a great teacher and it filled one of my general ed requirements ... so I gave it a try. I had a great time in the class and I learned SO MUCH!! Who knew?! I highly recommend this class, you won't regret it.
Haslam is the man. His class is easy and fun to attend. If you need help, he's right there for you. His lectures are created surrounding what the students of his class would like to hear; it's almost like we make the curriculum. If you enjoy writing about topics that matter to you, take his class.
The best teacher ever!!!! It's an easy class; and he cares about you a lot and he respects students. He is not a hard grader, but it's important to be there on time. He will give you feedback on your draft, which will help you a lot in you final essay. 3 essays and only one book assignment and easy midterm and final. Highly recommended!!Take him!!
This is a very cool, funny and inspirational teacher! He is great, really! My writing got improved a lot in his class and he gives great feedback! 3 ESSAYS AND EASY MIDTERM AND FINAL. I enjoyed so much in his class, just highly recommended!Take him, you will never regret!
Haslam is such a boss. Gives a lot of extra credit and easy homework assignments. He taught a 5 unit class, but treated it like a 1 unit class. As long as you show up to class, you will most definitely get an A.
Took this class as a filler requirement, fully expected to hate it. Graphic novels aren't my thing. I was shocked how fun and interactive he made the class. Some of the material was still a little "out there" for me, but it was easy to be engaged. He's a great grader, gives excellent feedback for improvement. I couldn't recommend this class more.
FANTASTIC! I've taken 2 years worth of English classes at DVC and I've had some excellent professors at this school but Haslam stands out. I took Sci Fi and Fantasy not really knowing what to expect. It's not the usual genre I'm interested in. I was surprised that this class is one of the BEST classes I've ever taken. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND this class
I took 117 and 123 with him and He is one of the best teacher ever had in DVC!!!!! just take with him.
Professor Haslam is one of the greatest professors I've had by far. The way he runs the class discussion is unparalleled and the flow is one that you will find no where else. You will probably find yourself and the rest of the class bursting into spontaneous laughter the majority of the time. TAKE ANY CLASS HE HAS! HE IS AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Professor Haslam was probably one of the best English instructors I've had. The guy is nice, funny and always willing to help out with any questions or concerns you might have with your essay(s). I'm personally not much of a reader, but the stories he had us read kept me interested all through the semester. Recommended him to a few people already.
Such an amazing professor. No exams, quizzes or final exams. Really clear on his policies in syllabus. Offers great feedback on essays and cancels class at least once in the semester. You must take him, you'll learn a lot!
Haslam is hands down the best professor out there! Assigns 3 essays and gives reasonable amount of time to compete then. Gives great feedback. He is able to connect with his students and help out in anyway possible. Haslam: you are the bomb!
Professor Haslam is awesome. I immediately knew I would enjoy his class from the first class meeting. He loves class discussion and wants you to learn. He's pretty lenient with assignments, I think his main goal is to make sure you're not miserable and that you're learning new things. Awesome guy
I took him my first semester at DVC and he was so nice! He is an easy going teacher, but it could be different since I was in a class with lots of people who didn't speak English very well. I got an A in his class no problem, he didn't assign many essays or homework assignments either. Meet him during office hours, he's very helpful!
Haslam is such a great professor. Easy to talk to, wants students to pass, extends essay deadlines when necessary. I wish all professors can be like him. No tests, low stress class. Definitely recommend! Thank you Haslam for all that you do for students - it is greatly appreciated!
HE UNDERSTANDS BEING A COLLEGE STUDENT!!! Great teacher! Very Relatable! I always hated writing essays, especially when they're more than a page (All essays in college) because I usually don't know what else to write about. But professor Haslam showed a different way of preparing your essays and now a 5 page essay is a piece of cake!
Is one of the only english teachers i've had that doesn't base their class on unproductive group work and sucking up to them with baseless metaphors. Lots of opportunities to practice writing essays and get feedback. Amazing scifi class that taught me a lot about the genre and finally made it clear why people become english majors!
Haslam is the best English teacher to have. He chooses a great selection of texts for students to read and write essays on. Gives great feedback/looks over your drafts during office hours - he wants you to pass! Take him, register early because spots fill up quickly for his classes
He's a good professor, but HE DOES NOT RESPOND TO EMAILS OR CANVAS MESSAGES. BEWARE
Professor Haslam is awesome!! I loved his character, and every moment of his Class. I am always worry about English since it's my second language, but I am so lucky to have him as my professor for two semester , he makes learning English enjoyable.
Proff Haslam is awesome! I took his SciFi class when I first started at DVC. I wish his other classes fit with my schedule but they don't or I would take him again. I highly recommend him, he loves what he does! As long as you write your paper and read the books you're golden!
Alan Haslam is one of the best instructors I've had at DVC. The workload was moderate and the support for all of our writing assignments was great. The material he chooses is unique and engaging. You won't be reading the "same old stuff." I highly recommend him!
MR HASLAM IS AMAZING!! TAKE THIS CLASS I SWEAR YOU WON'T REGRET IT. This is the first review Iv'e ever written on rate my professor and I had to write it because Haslam is the best teacher Iv'e ever had at DVC. He's so funny and caring and if you try I guarantee you'll get an A.
Professor Haslam really cares about his students and about making sure they learn, rather than ensuring they check off a list of requirements. He's very flexible and encouraging, and genuinely seems to enjoy his job. His perspective on literature is nuanced and unconventional. His online class wasn't hard, as long as one was willing to really try.
Favorite class/prof ever at DVC! If you need an English course and want to actually enjoy it, laugh, and learn something, TAKE SCIFI WITH HIM. I wasn't a huge fan of the genre going in, but the discussions are so profound and not what you'd expect. He chooses interesting readings with all kinds of themes. No reading quizzes, VERY easy going.
Such an amazing professor. No exams, quizzes or final exams. Really clear on his policies in syllabus. Offers great feedback on essays and cancels class at least once in the semester. You must take him, you'll learn a lot!
I took his summer class and I was nervous in the beginning but he makes the class more enjoyable than what I thought. My English is my second language, but I learned a lot from this class adding that he's so nice professor to talk to outside the class. I hate English classes but he made it easy and doable. Take him.
Professor Haslam is incredibly nice. He seems to genuinely care about his students. But, he is not a good professor. He does not grade anything. He will give you a lot of work, and expect you to do it well. But, he won't do anything himself. He has graded literally nothing. He has promised a schedule that has never been created. Do not take him!
Professor Haslam is amazing and super chill. As long as you are willing to write a lot of essays and can follow the criteria with good grammar you will get an A. Brought in Krispy Kreme on last day of class. Overall, amazing guy, entertaining, easy to talk to. 100% recommend if you have the opportunity to take his class.
I really liked this professor! The books he assigned were really fun to read and totally relate able to young adults! His class discussions were really deep and often times hilarious! He is a really nice man and was super understanding and accomadating when the pandemic hit! Still made class fun and checked in on us when it moved online! Take him!
I had Professor Haslam for my first semester at DVC and he was AMAZING!!! His class was really easy and straight-forward, he also gives 3 day extensions to your essays which is very thoughtful of him. I really recommend him if you are looking for a chill class for English as a first year student.
A solid choice for a teacher! The class I took (online/async.) was pretty mellow all semester, and was likely the one I spent the least time on. It was broken into 3 essays we wrote, and he let us choose our own topics for all three, tethered to a central theme (identity, DVC issues, etc.), which meant they were all okay without being stressful.
I took professor Haslam in the fall! He was very nice and understanding. He was super open to us writing about different topics and his comments/feedback was very motivational and kind!
Great professor! I loved having him as a professor and I plan on taking him again if I get the chance. He has super clear grading criteria and is a fairly lenient grader. Take him if you can!
Took his poetry class and I feel as though I grew a lot as a poet. He gives great feedback and makes smaller groups to help ease the sharing of work and to give more personalized feedback. Would defs take another class from him, he's very well spoken and connected with his students even though it was online.
I failed 2 English classes prior to taking professor Haslam's class. He is an excellent professor, with simple assignments and thought provoking essays. I got a fair grade on all 3 essays, and I really enjoyed his class. This is the best English professor at DVC.
I took his class in the summer, so it was more fast paced than a fall semester would have been. I personally had a great experience. He was clear on what he is looking for when grading, give chances to rewrite them if you get a bad grade on an essay, and provided nearly all of the readings for the class. One thing however, you will be reading a lot
Professor Haslam is great. He is a super easy grader and gives good feedback on essays. The course is planned out super well through the modules on canvas, and I would definitely take him again.
Great prof!! I took his online class but he was happy to meet with me over zoom whenever I needed. His modules are easily laid out and essay topics are easy. There can be some heavy reading but most of it is actually interesting and not bad to get through. He is flexible if he see's that you're trying and he wants his students to succeed!!
Prof. Haslam is a fair and thoughtful teacher; his class requires lots of reading but the instructions are clear and focused. What is great about his ENGL-122 course is that the essays have real-world applications, and he focuses on concrete solutions/arguments for each paper.
Easy Class if you want to pass English 122. Easy homework, Gives feedback on essay, You will get 100 on all the homeworks. You MUST take him
We wrote 3 total essays which were the majority of what the class was about and he was very helpful in the development of the essays. I also enjoyed the topics that we wrote about and we were also able to choose the topic for our last essay. He is a very nice teacher and gives great feedback and is always willing to help.
Professor Haslam is a chill, nice guy. No book, reading articles can be a little heavy. Little to no feedback given on assignments leading up to essays (which are about the essays), makes essay writing more difficult. Takes 4+ weeks to grade assignments. Overall, would take again. Pretty easy class, easy grader, gives good feedback on essays.
Professor Haslam was well-organized and had options to either watch a video of him talking about each assignment or reading it on paper. His explanations were very clear. He definitely made me a better writer since he had great feedback. He also modified assignments as necessary, reducing stress.
I took this short-term summer course,16 weeks of work in a 6-week course. Homework due every other day, he allowed a grace period w/o a deduction to grades. He responds quickly to ??. helpful feedback that inspires you to do great. He takes classes to be a better instructor. He really cares about what he does. Highly recommend you take his course.
I took the 6 weeks course. Small assignments and discussions are posted 2-3 days a week. 3 essays for the course, but he allows grace periods for all assignments and quick feedback if you reach out to him. Good extra credit opportunities at the end of the course and essay revisions for the first 2 essays. Highly recommend his summer class!
Took him in the summer, course was really straightforward and simple. 2 short stories and a book for the six weeks. 3 essays total with clear guidelines. Highly reccomend
Professor Haslam was great and his online course was very easy. All the assignments you do build up to the essay making the essays pretty easy to write. There are 3 essays in his class and are about 5-7 pages. First 2 essay were easy but the 3rd on was a little harder. He grades very easily but also very slowly.
Was scared to take writing. Professor Haslam made writing easier. Each assignment that he assigns ties into the essay. 3 essays and you gain confidence as you go
Alan was literally one of the most caring teachers I've ever had. He's super easy to reach and quick to respond by iMessage, and he has grace periods for every assignment. Super easy class: 3 essays and small assignments along the week (they lead up to and help you research your essays). He's super supportive and even helped me with my college apps
Just take him. I promise you as long as you put in some effort you'll get an easy A. He's super caring and courteous. Will support you and reach back to you quickly. Will give you leeway on assignments, will reach out to you if you're falling behind. Will help you with anything you need in the class. Like seriously, easily the GOAT. Take him.
Amazing professor. I took him for Fiction Writing and he was easily the best professor I have ever taken. Simply goated. Fun, thoughtful, engaging, and respected the class by asking for input on certain assignments and built around the class's preference for writing. I would definitely take him again if I could have for my other English classes!
Prof. Haslam is a great professor to have. The class was easygoing, yet still fruitful. Much of the homework and assignments catered to supplement larger projects/essays. He was also very understanding and gave good advice.
This guy is just MIA. He hasn't graded anything in the last month and a half. I go into every assignment and essay blind, as the last assignment was meant to help prepare the student for the next essay. He has assignments that are part of the essay, presumably so that he can grade it and ensure you are on track, but won't grade it. Still very easy.
He's such a good professor! This has been my first semester of college and this class has been the easiest. Ive never thought of myself as a good essay writer but the essays have been fairly easy (three in total) he gives a lot of detailed feedback after you submit them. He responds quickly to emails and is very kind and wants students to succeed!
This teacher is the best one you will ever meet. He offers feedback and responds to you as fast as he can, he is a caring and compassionate teacher. He knows what he is doing. This teacher deserves all 5/5. He has 3 essays but all the work you do is for the essay meaning you will have less work to do when that essay comes. Very intresting topic.
Online fiction writing class. The course materials and reading were great. Semester started well. Graded and gave feedback on first few assignments. Then grades with no feedback. Multiple assignments graded within 1 minute. Clearly the professor was not doing his job. Disappointing, disheartening and poor example to his students. Easy A though.
Took his fully online course. Only wrote 3 essays, all of which were pretty up to you to decide. Most of curriculum consisted of planning out essays (researching, drafting, etc.). Not much reading had to be done. Prof. Haslam was always responsive and seemed like he genuinely cared about the class. Would recommend anyone to take one of his courses.
Professor Alan is a great professor. He clearly loves teaching students and it shows through his class. He provides constructive criticism and doesn't care if you write well or not. He responds to emails quickly and even allowed me to submit an assignment a few weeks late. There are many discussions with classmates. His class is an easy A.
I really liked how he set up the course - it was well structured and paced well. Gives 1 day grace period for normal assignments and 3 day for essays/bigger assignments. Only thing is he can be slow with grading so if u want feedback or suggestions make sure to email him directly. 3 essays total worth 70%, everything else 30%.
Excellent professor of English. I'm not a strong writer, but Alan sets up his assignments to help you out. Very lenient with due dates on late work and easy grader. He wants to see you succeed. Would recommend if you are looking for a people not confident in writing abilities, and would not recommend for hardcore English Majors.
Teaches Great. Super caring. Makes it an easy class. What are you waiting for? Go take his class.
He's a good teacher, an easy grader, and gives good feedback. He's also very organized and cares about his students. Allowed grace periods. I recommend him 100%
Professor Haslam was clear with his grading criteria but gave feedback quite late. Wants to help students and easy to talk to through canvas. Do your work on time and read through the rubric and you'll be set.
Prof. Haslam is definitely Greatest of all times. Take his class. Very good professor.
Many assignments, mostly discussion boards, but he assigns them in a way that makes the essays very easy to finish. Also an easy grader. My only complaint is that he is a very slow grader so if you have any questions you need to email him directly and he responds fast. Very flexible as well, he gave me a lot of extensions for the assignments.
Alan Haslam is exactly what you want in an English professor. His contemporary poetry was great with each week covering 2-3 new poets. There are usually 2 discussions due each week and a longer poetry analysis essay (3-4 pgs) due every month. For the final, we had the option to do a 4th poem analysis essay or write our own poems. Take him for an A!
Responds to all my emails fairly quickly and is very flexible and understanding. Makes lots of announcements so you know what's going on in the class. Keeps you updated and gives great feedback :)
I had professor Alan Haslam FA24 and he was the best English professor I've had in my life. He is very caring, understanding, and gives amazing and detailed feedback on assignments and essays. The essays that you work on are almost completely chosen by yourself which makes the class very enjoyable. Also he has grace periods on all assignments!
Don't hesitate take his class, professor Alan is amazing caring and always quick to respond back with any and all questions. Reading can feel heavy but there are only 4 essays throughout the semester he sets up all materials and assignments to prepare you for writing you essays! TAKE HIM HES ONE OF THE BEST ENGLISH PROFESSORS HERE AT DVC!!
Professor Haslam is legit one of the best professors I have ever had for english! He is so sweet and caring and genuinely wants you to do good. If you put in some effort and time, you will pass with an A. He is quick with responding to emails and he never jumps to conclusions if writing gets flagged. He is so amazing, I highly highly recommend.
Super helpful teacher! He gives good feedback and most of the work is graded on completion. Responds very well to emails/messages. You can expect 2 assignments a week and 3 essays. Overall really good teacher.
THE GOAT. Take him and his goated classes. It was very chill and you would do like 1-2 assignments a week and then 3 essays throughout the whole semester. He is very nice with grading and honestly is so caring and kind. He also is okay with late assignments and doesn't deduct points. The lebron of english teachers at dvc you gotta take him.
If you need to take English, TAKE IT WITH PROF. HASLAM. Best teacher at DVC. Clear with what he wants, and the class is fun.
