Brother Holyoak is a great teacher. He is very clear while teaching and manages to make complicated concepts feel simple. He gives lots of resources to use, and I would encourage using all of them to earn a good grade. I often felt frustrated on quizzes and test because he will ask you about the smallest of details about the material though.
Holyoak is a good teacher. His lectures are more question and answer sessions which isn't my cup of tea. But if you stay on top of the material and study ahead, you will ace the exams. There no trick questions or anything He is very upfront about what he expects out of you and if you do the work and put in the hours, you'll get a good grade.
There is so much new material in this course (a little less than BIO180) that one should continuously study the material over time. He is a well-respected professor at BYU-I and the homework he assigns is meant as help along with showing up to non-mandatory class and asking questions, even learning from others' questions.
He is a great teacher! He gives good explanations in ways that I can really understand it. The material is supposed to be learned prior to class, and the class time is meant for questions. If you take it seriously and put in the time you will get a good grade.
I felt that he really cared about me and wanted to help me succeed. He has multiple ways available for you to learn the material and is willing to adjust how he does class to best fit the needs of his students. I was really inspired by his authentic and simple messages at the beginnings of class. The expectations are clear and he helps you succeed.
Really liked having class with Bro. Holyoak. Learned a lot about the material and is great at tackling questions. Homework wasn't really bad at all. The only thing I'm not a fan of is having classes be question and answer sessions (which is my personal preference), but he is an excellent professor. Highly recommend him.
I would happily take another class from him. He's great at going into more detail if needed, answering questions, and being available. He's an awesome guy! Highly recommend his course.
I really enjoyed brother Holyoak, but I did not enjoy the proctored quizzes. They were hard and you cannot even look back on them to see which problems you missed. That was a huge bummer. This class is a little difficult but not too bad. I really liked his lectures! Overall good teacher.
He's a great professor, and did amazing teaching this subject online.
Brother Holyoak wasn't my favorite teacher, but there was a genuine spirit about him and desire that showed me he was there to teach me all that he knew and was not going to quit unless my question were answered!
He teaches simply and according to student needs while also covering required material.
Overall is a good teacher and wanted to help you if you had questions! Good at explaining topics in more than one way so everyone can understand!
An incredibly smart man who knows his stuff. The course is a difficult one that jumps around quite a bit but he is more than willing to help you with your questions, it sometimes was hard to even know what your questions should be until you missed them on the test.
He is a very caring professor and he wants you to succeed. He does give a fair amount of homework but the majority is easy and can be done quickly.
Brother Holyoak was an amazing professor He knew the material and taught everything on the tests bio 181 wasn't an easy class for me especially in a remote learning environment. Brother Holyoak made it fun. You can tell he genuinely cares about the success of his students I would recommend him.
He is a very qualified professor and can easily any questions you have about the material that you need to know and even more. He is very good at teaching and explaining. He shares lots of cool stories too.
I liked Brother Holyoak as the teacher, I thought that the course through a zoom class was very difficult. I also thought that the materials were not good at covering the material on the exam
Good guy. Is really good with the first section. Explains lessons really well.
Good person and expects students to be well-rounded in knowing the material so he can give feedback on questions.
Bro Holyoak was a good teacher for this class! I took it over zoom in quarantine so it may look a little different in the future, but you are given everything to succeed. You could read or watch videos and test and assignments are well graded.
He is awesome! Very easy to work with and cares about your growth and learning. Decently hard class but great professor.
I worked night shifts about 30 or more hours a week with a couple of classes (& this. Because of remote learning, Brother Holyoak gave the option to attend the classes each day. I think thats a great option, but not the best for me. I just focussed on the pre-recorded lectures and other resources. It helped me focus on the most important things.
I really enjoyed learning from Brother Holyoak. He gives great lectures brimming with cool information and entertaining stories. This class is more difficult than other 100 level courses. Be prepared to learn a LOT of information quickly. He clearly wants his students to succeed and wants to answer questions so don't let the information overwhelm u
I liked his focus on us asking questions to help us better prepare, but was also willing to do some extra things to help get the most out of his teaching.
He always answered questions you needed in class and told some fun stories that helped me remember topics, I just wish he would hold review sessions for the test or offer extra credit.
Good choice for this class! I retook this class from a previous semester and did so much better with him as my professor. He makes sure to answer as many questions as he can during question and answer sessions, as well as making sure to having lots of sources we can turn to for studying. Also good at having gospel topics incorporated into lessons.
He is a good teacher and he is easy to communicate with. Wonderful personality and good spiritual insights at the beginning of class.
Has timed tests some 10 questions 8 minutes. You cant see what you missed. Stupid way of learning. Doesnt answer questions or emails. Which sucks if its about an assignment. Poor quality teaching and materials arent the best. Class wouldnt be half as difficult if he answered questions and did something different with the quizzes.
Bro. Holyoak is one of the best professors in the biology department. He goes into depth and is willing to explain anything and everything.
Brother Holyoak is a professor that is very dedicated to his students. In his Q&A sessions, he makes sure to follow up with the student who asked a question to make sure that we understood and give any clarification necessary. He will send you a list of topics that you missed on the test so that you can go back and review those topics for the final
Professor Holyoak is a great teacher and well respected. He will always make sure you understand the material as long as you asks questions and come prepared for class. He has adapted well to the remote learning style and makes sure all the information is taught that is needed for exams. Highly Recommended.
Holyoak's a great teacher and loves the subject. Class is a Q/A session. You watch videos to learn the material beforehand, and you ask any questions you may have in class. If you don't watch the videos and do the prep. work, you won't know what's going on. Be sure to turn in homework and take quizzes on time, because NO LATE WORK IS ACCEPTED EVER.
He is a great teacher and really tries to answer your questions. I put this class off to focus on other classes and I paid the price. If you want an A youve got to keep up on reviewing and the lectures.
Bro. Holyoak is a good person to take for this class. He does well in the lectures and did all around a good job. All you need to know is that you should watch the lectures and come to class. If you do that and spend some times studying, you'll do fine in this class.
He's a really good teacher. He is very intellectual and knows what he's talking about. Attendance isn't mandatory, but if you don't attend then you miss a lot of material and it would be hard to pass if you skip a lot. It is obvious that he cares about his students and is there to help you learn and pass the class. Definitely would recommend him!
I think it would be nice if we had more time for the quizes, they are too short and sometimes it gives me anxiety. Other than that I liked the class.
Brother Holyoak is a solid choice for a good professor. Class was weird because it was mainly a Q&A session based on your prep work, but he was very good at answering questions. The homework is not hard and contributes to your learning very well. The tests are not difficult if you are diligent when preparing and doing your homework. Overall, great.
Brother Holyoak is a really great teacher. I had a lot of fun and learned a lot in his class. Make sure to attend or watch lectures and take notes. If you do that, and the homework, you will be totally good. There is frequent homework but its pretty easy. Holyoak is awesome and really passionate about invertebrates. I would definitely recommend.
He is a good professor. Sometimes he goes into much depth when you ask a question but is always willing to answer questions. If you ask a question he doesn't know, he'll take the time to find the answer and then send you an email answering your question.
I loved his class! Bro. Holyoak is such a great professor. He really goes out of his way to make sure everyone is on the same page. He gives plenty of time to complete homework (which isn't difficult), and he does a really good job of preparing everyone for tests. If you watch the lectures and do the reading, you'll pass easily.
Brother Holyoak is really great. With most classes being remote now, it's awesome how organized he is with everything. His expectations and how he runs his class is straight forward. 10/10 recommend!
Brother Holyoak is a great professor. He really cares about you and will help you succeed. This class requires a lot of self motivation and study but the topics are pretty straightforward. Brother Holyoak is really good at explaining topics and making sure you understand.
Brother Holyoak is a really great teacher, and very passionate about this class. He really cares a lot and will take the time to help students understand the materials. Overall, I'd recommend him.
He is a good teacher. He expects you to learn the material well.
Really loved this class and I learned a lot. There is not much time on quizzes so make sure you are studied up. Test are pretty much your grade so prep in advance. Also, genetics is the hardest test so prepare. Go to class and watch the pre-lecture videos. Brother Holyoak is a super nice guy and he teaches the material really well.
If you're gonna do a remote classroom, his format is Q&A so it's hard to get anything out of lecture, because there isn't one. It wasn't good for me, his voice is kind of dry and monotone over zoom so it's hard to stay interested. He'd probably be great in a lecture hall though.
He is an awesome professor and if you have to take BIO181 I would recommend him. A few things to be careful of, even though attendance is not mandatory make sure to go to class and participate! It is easy to get behind and lost especially now because its all through zoom. TLDR He is awesome and the class is not an easy A.
Brother Holyoak is a good professor and knows the material well. I am personally not a fan of the Q&A design of his course, but it does allow for a lot more flexibility with attendance, which some people like. He provides good feedback on exams, but the quizzes are 8 minutes long.... not sure why 10 minutes is too much to ask for with 10 questions.
This class is hard and you really need to study for tests and quizzes. Do the prep work or you won't do well. He had us watch the lectures before class time and then we just had a question and answer session during class time. Most of the time we got out early from class. You need to review bio 180 for the genetics section.
Most of his classes are based on the pre-recorded lectures, so if you don't watch those before class, expect to be lost.
Good teacher. I imagine that he is still figuring out the whole online class thing. I'm sure he is an even better teacher in an actual classroom compared to over zoom. The biggest thing with his class is to make sure to watch the pre-recorded lectures and takes notes on them. The course itself provides all the resources and information needed.
This class is just fine, but the lab is just too much. Plan on spending over five hours a week just drawing. If you are really passionate about zoology then you will probably love it.
His recorded lectures are great and it would be easy to keep up if you aren't taking to many other difficult classes. I took Boistats and Botany at the same time, I fell behind in some of these classes. He is a great teacher and he is very helpful with questions. Also he is a very humble person, he will accept when he makes a mistake. No late work.
Brother Holyoak is a pretty straight forward professor. His Bio 181 class is simply answering questions students have about the pre recorded lectures. Most of the time, class may end early if no questions are asked. I found the hw assignments pretty simple. The weekly quizzes were simple but a little difficult.
Brother Holyoak is a pretty good professor. I took Bio 181 from him this semester and really enjoyed the class even though it was virtual because of COVID. If you watch the lecture videos and read from the book. You will be prepared for his Q&A that he does every class period. There were 4 exams including the final. IF you study you will do fine
Easy to understand but it requires a great deal of studying. Work hard and you'll pass.
He is really nice and willing to help students.
He's really nice and willing to work with you.
I think that his tests are very fair and represent the students what the students learn very well.
I took this class remotely. Lectures were pre-recorded and the class meeting was just a Q&A. Genetics was the most difficult section, so I recommend spending a decent amount of time studying for that exam. Overall Brother Holyoak is a great teacher and willing to answer any questions you may have.
Really good at teaching the material and super nice guy.
Solid man and professor. Much different teaching style and class layout than bio 180 so get ready to learn differently. I would definitely take his class again. He wants his students to succeed and cares so much about the material.
I loved Brother Holyoak! He was always willing to give feedback and help to me any time I needed it. He is very understanding and kind. His exams are very fair so if you study the lectures you will do well. He pushes students in a great way!
I like Brother Holyoak as a person. He is very nice, kind, etc, however, I would never take another class from him. No in-person office hours, Q/A classes that did not seem very helpful, not many practice problems, excessively vague on what to study for tests, etc. I felt the only way to learn was by watching the pre-recorded videos 1000x.
Brother Holyoak is a good guy but I had the hardest time paying attention in his class. Very boring and monotone. The only reason I did well was because he does provide pre class recordings that I could watch. I did appreciate that. I had some mixups with the homework and it was very difficult to get the points back. Not very understanding.
Super nice guy but never lectures. He comes to class each day and says okay what are your questions, thats about it.
Brother Holyoak is an awesome person and always is so nice and gives great spiritual thoughts before class. I am not sure if it just because we are on zoom, but it is hard to get things out of class time. He does not lecture, he expects us to come to class with questions. He also does not have office hours. I would suggest taking from someone else.
I love how he makes sure we understand the topic before moving on. Professor Holyoak is very caring and patient. I really enjoyed his class, and I would definitively take it again if I had the chance.
Great teacher, really focuses on the success of students but only if you're willing to put in the effort.
Bro. Holyoak is a really nice guy, he teaches very well. The pace of the class is good too. My big issue was the testing. I didn't really know what to expect on the tests, and the only practice problems given were in the textbook, which btw we only used for the practice problems. Since tests are a major part of the grade that made things difficult.
All around great professor to take bio 181 with. You can tell that Brother Holyoak is passionate about the class material and he is more than willing to help out students. Daily prep guides will be your best friend for the exams but don't forget to take notes on the whole lecture because the weekly quiz's will often have topics not on the guide.
I like brother Holyoak a lot, he's very knowledgeable and I enjoy how he makes biology interesting by adding side stories to the mix. His videos are well made. It is a little tough to know exactly what to study for the exams though.
He is a great professor and I really liked his lectures! I always just took notes from both the videos for each lecture and I did great on exams. Class is just a Q/A session which I like. I do wish that he was more leniant because of the world-climate and pandemic right now, instead of having a no-mercy policy.
I really liked his lectures! My form of studying was taking notes on both videos for each lecture and I did great on each exam. You don't need the textbook. My one complaint was that he isn't taking into consideration the global-climate and pandemic on our mental health and has a no-mercy policy. I wish he would be more leniant because of it.
I feel like this course was very ambigous. the test material was not always the same as the lecture. He runs his lecture as a Q&A which is fine except that he doesn't always cover the necessary material because once the questions run out we are done.
We always have Q&A opportunities in class. The quizzes are taken once a week and homework is due the next day after class, which gives more time to be accurate. Overall, the professor helps the student understand the basic concepts of the lesson. You can request for the question you missed.
Professor Holyoak is great! He is very knowledge about what he teaches. There is a textbook, but it is not necessary to study it to do well in this course. Just be sure to watch the lecture videos and take good notes, and you'll do fine!
Great teacher, the class is hard but all the materials needed to succeed are given.
Bio 181 is tough to begin with and the way the class is run is strict, but it is the same for all Bio 181 classes. Bro. Holyoak actually goes over the quizzes unlike some teachers, which helps you prepare for the tests more than anything.
Maybe it's just because the course was online, but it felt like you were on your own for the most part. I spent most of my time studying the textbook or reviewing the materials that were provided.
Brother Holyoak is a solid professor who presents the material in a good way. The thing that helped me the most with this class is taking notes on his pre recorded lectures. This was where I got a bulk of my study material for exams. His class/lecture is set up in Q&A setting, so be prepared to ask questions.
Brother Holyoak is a great teacher. This is my 3rd semester in a row taking from him. Attendance isn't mandatory, but i recommend going to his lectures because sometimes you talk about things that may be on the test. He is very passionate about what he teaches. Very fair grader and cares about his students.
Bro Holyoak was a really nice guy, but I don't agree with his teaching style. He puts all of the class learning on you without much direction. His preclass videos were okay, but the in class Q&As were just about pointless half of the time. His test prep was far below average and I felt that I was never prepared for the exams.
Brother Holyoak is very patient and good at explaining the material very clearly.
Great professor in general, but his teaching methods didn't work for me personally. He used class time to have Q&A sessions, which I only found useful if I had the same questions as everyone else. I've never had homework and tests this difficult. The material itself wasn't too bad, but was often theory-based and required tons of critical thinking.
Professor Holyoak is amazing. Ive taken a couple classes from him and theyve all been fun. Hes passionate about his work and really wants you to do well. This semester was hard online, and I didnt put in enough effort so my grade dropped. But if you work hard youll do well. Lots of reading, and note taking and lots of memorizing.
Brother Holyoak is a great teacher. He's accessible outside of class and always ready to answer your questions. I had some trouble with one of the proctorio exams, and he was able and willing to help me out as soon as it happened. The one thing I disliked about this class is that if you don't do too hot on one exam, you may never recover.
Need to read a lot. Lectures recorder (zoom). Tests are open response with good amount of flexibility. Need to study fair amount for lab quizzes. Need to be present on certain days for participation. Lab notebooks require effort, don't fall behind. Learned a lot of information in this class. Keep notes on characteristics of each phylum.
Brother Holyoak is willing to help and knows his stuff. The only thing that that was hard is he doesnt have lectures. You watch the video lectures before class and have a question and answer session. Overall good guy, just very exam heavy!
Great class especially with all this COVID nonsense. Expectations were clear and as long as the pre-recorded lectures and do the homework, you should do well.
I really enjoyed this class! Holyoak has a passion for what he does and it shows when he teaches.
Brother Holyoak is incredibly helpful for BIO 181. He has detailed slides and lecture videos exclusive to his students. Other sections don't have access to the same materials. He is always willing to explain something.
Brother Holyoak is a good professor and gives you lots of resources to succeed. The online class is not lecture based. The class period is just a Q&A about the previous day's homework and reading. I just did not like the set up of the class. He's a great guy, and really knowledgeable, but the way the class was run just didn't work well for me.
Good class structure. Easy to work by yourself. Classes are just Q&A sessions. No office hours. Lots of video material, which is good.
I would definitely recommend taking this class from this teacher. He is caring and understanding, gives good lectures, and is enthusiastic about the topics he teaches. The class was a lot of fun and I learned a lot.
I don't feel like he did as much as he could have to help us succeed. Doesn't lecture over zoom, just does Q&As. I liked that, but never knew the right questions to ask. I felt like I didn't always know how to succeed, despite my hard work and effort. Daily Learning objectives only kind of helped. Nice guy though, and he knows his ecology!
He is very passionate about biology and brings great energy into class.
Very clear about how he grades. There is a 10-20 min video on every lecture that covers the material well. I never read the text book and ended up just fine from the videos. Easy class if you just do that.
You can't see what answers you got wrong on a test, you have to email him for a summary (he won't meet you). I emailed him several times about all my test summaries and never heard from him. I still have no idea what I missed so I can learn from it. Lectures are just a Q&A, things aren't elaborated more than in the videos.0/10 for me for negligence
I took a class from him and I have a learning disability. He was very unaccommodating and didnt show any sympathy. Ive never had a teacher that I wasnt able to explain the situation and that was not willing to help but he was not willing to help at all. If you have any disabilities hes not going to be easy to work with.
Prof. Holyoak is someone who is easygoing overall, unless you don't put forth any effort. His class is easy to do well in, just watch videos and take a few quizzes and exams, but there's a lot of homework that didn't help me learn the material. He is a bit politically biased, so watch for that, but otherwise he's an average, semi-bland professor.
I created an account to rate Brother Holyoak. He is the worst professor I have ever had and has done nearly nothing to help me succeed. He will not show you what you get wrong on quizzes or tests to improve on. He often doesn't know the answers to quiz questions when going over them in class. Also, he won't do face-to-face calls with students. 0/10
Easy class. Attend the lectures and you should be fine. The class would have been better minus COVID.
Professor Holyoak is a brilliant teacher who obviously cares deeply about his students. He begins every class with an inspirational message and the prerecorded lectures are very well done and instructive. I really enjoyed the format of this class and the layout of the tests which allow for some flexibility in choosing which questions to answer.
The class overall is great! You can learn a lot about marine biology if you put forth the effort to learn. The course has lot of ways to learn the material that you need to know for the exams, which are pretty tough so you need to study. It was a little difficult at times during the course but that is because I do not do well with online learning.
Brother Holyoak is a great professor. He is very knowledgeable about the subject and clearly loves the material. He is also very good at addressing any questions and is willing to help you out in the ways that you need. I would recommend him to anyone.
Marine Biology with Brother Holyoak has honestly been my favorite class this semester. There are more assignments (3 homework assignments and 1 scientific article summary per week) comparing to my other biology classes. He's good at explaining things very clearly in the lessons.
You watched a lecture video before class and if you had questions, the class period was spent answering questions from the chapter/lecture video. Homework was fairly easy and the setup of the exam was he would give you 15 questions in a certain section, and you only had to answer 10 of them. Amazing teacher and passionate about what he's teaching.
Sometimes the grading can be a little subjective. Make sure your answers for tests and homework come from the lecture, all of the info you need is in the lectures.
I took BIO 180 from a different professor and felt like I didn't have the information I needed, hence I retook the class. Brother Holyoak gives a lot of information on the things he teaches. He is happy to answer questions and does not belittle you if you ask simple questions. He knows his stuff when it comes to ecology and evolution.
Bro Holyoak is a very good professor. He gives you lectures to watch on your own time then his zoom meetings he uses as a Q and A session, so if you have questions you just go to class and ask. If you just watch the lectures and study, you should pass.
Brother Holyoak is a great teacher who puts a lot of time and effort into the lecture recordings. During the zoom class he has a Q and A where he will explain any topics we don't understand, the tests are somewhat challenging but he goes over them. He is always available to email and help in anyway he can.
He is a nice guy. The class is taught at a low level while your tested and graded at a high level. Felt like I studied like crazy to still fail the tests. Only does Q&A lectures which dont seem to help me. I got the same grade on my test going to all the lectures as I did not going.
Bro Holyoak is one of the best professors I have ever had. He is very knowledgeable and he is willing to answer questions without making you feel dumb. He is obviously very passionate about what he teaches. 10/10 would have a class with Bro Holyoak again.
Brother Holyoak uses a flipped curriculum for his 181 class, meaning all of the textbook reading and lecture videos are to be completed before his lecture which is a Q&A session. I'd recommend reading the textbook but only taking notes on the pre-lecture videos and in the Q&A session. "Know (the material) to the level of the slides"
He really cares about helping students succeed and does what he can to make sure students understand the material. His knowledge of biology is extensive so if class seems boring, go ahead and ask about whatever you are curious about.
His class is very lecture heavy and they need to be done before the class itself. Once we were in actual class, all we did was a Q and A session. There is homework for every lecture that we watch and there is a quiz every week. The tests are pretty difficult, so I had to study a lot.
Amazing! Straight forward in his expectations. There is a quiz for every 3 lectures and hw for each lecture. He has pre-recorded lectures you most definitely should watch 1 or 2 times. The actual class time is a q&a where he will help with whatever you need clarification on. Charismatic teacher who loves the subject he teaches and those he teaches
Professor Holyoak is a very helpful teacher. His teaching style is a little backwards meaning that you'll have to do a lot of prep work and teach yourself the material and his class is like a Q&A session, but he's willing to answer any question that you might have and really wants to help you understand the material in any way you can.
This was an online class. I always wondered why Brother Holyoak had so many ratings and its because he gives extra credit if you do it. He's a great guy. Knows his stuff. Tests are basically what you get graded on so be sure to study for those.
This class isn't too difficult as long as you're consistent with your study. Besides tests, you're pretty much only graded on quizzes every other week, so he does a good job ensuring his students stay on top of the course material.
Brother Holyoak is a great professor in the way that he will tell you whatever you want to know as long as he knows it. However, he is not always specific on what you will need or not need to know. Overall, he is great and would recommend his class if you're taking BIO 181.
Remote class. Expectations are clear, and help is easily accessible. He has obvious passion for the material. Tests are weighted heavily though, so it might be tough for those with test anxiety.
Brother Holyoak is a good professor. I feel like I learned a lot, especially within the genetics section. That being said, he is a professor that will make you watch the lecture in a video before class, and then he will only answer questions that the class asks. This works for some people, but it makes it hard to recognize the important parts.
I hated this class and how it was set up. This is nothing personal but it was not set up for the students to succeed. If you put in the time you will be fine but I did not feel lie brother Holyoak did much to help the students succeed. Couldn't see what you got wrong ion test, and quizzes after the first unit, I felt were set up to trick you.
Bro Holyoak has a real passion for biology that is seen in his teaching and he really cares for his student's education. I would definitely take another class from him!
It isn't mandatory to come, but it's one of those classes where you get a better understanding of the lecture videos you watch. The lectures in of themselves are great and easy to take notes off of. It won't be too long before you get into the swing of things in class, making grades and tests much easier.
Brother Holyoak requires students to watch his prerecorded lectures/read lots of supplementary reading before his question and answer sessions (class). The format requires more preparation on your end, but I like that we had that opportunity to ask clarifying questions. Very passionate about his class and was always willing to help! Great teacher!!
Scheduled class time were used as Q & A. He doesn't take attendance but class is mandatory. He has posted lectures and slides for every section.(All of the BIO 181 teachers have timed quizzes and exams and the same amount of homework.) The course itself can be a breeze if you do the work. He is nice and willing to help.
Very Beautiful man and is always willing to help everyone with anything that they need.
I took this class remotely this semester, and honestly Brother Holyoak did a great job for the structure being so different! The preparatory lectures are VERY important, so make sure to watch those, and you will do well! Just take the class seriously and realize that the tests are a pretty significant portion of your grade, but not the only part!
He's a nice guy that definitely knows what he is teaching. He does q&a sessions instead of going over all of the material in the time we have lectures. The review sessions were also q&a which made it hard to know what material was actually important to know or not. He's good at keeping the class updated with new information and replying.
I don't like his teaching style, and won't take a class from him again. You are never sure what information is important. There is homework, but it's barely worth any points and isn't applicable to the class, but still takes up time. Your grade comes down to tests and quizzes, so if you're a good test taker you'll most likely be fine.
He is super nice and is willing to work/ help you. His classes are all Q and A with I do not really like . He is understanding and replies relatively fast. He is very strict when it comes to submitting assignments/HW and is a harsh grader. The only thing I can say that I really don't like about him is that it takes a long time for him to grade HW.
Make sure that you keep on top of the homework. There is no late work. Other than that if you study the material you should be fine.
Be sure to watch the previously recorded lectures before coming to class, because class is a Q&A session. Great professor, knows what he's talking about, and always willing to expand on questions asked. Homework has clear grading criteria.
Dr. Holyoak has found the best way to handle teaching online. he records his lectures beforehand and has you watch the lecture take notes and come to class ready to ask questions if you have any. he also has you read scientific papers that relate to the topics that we cover in class. which is good for real-life applications. I really like him.
Brother Holyoak is a great guy and I enjoyed the class, but I feel that some of the quizzes and tests were way to detailed for this level of a class. I also feel that although he has great examples many times they go into things you don't need to know for the test and so can mis-focus your study for exams.
Brother Holyoak does a great job with online learning. He has video lectures posted beforehand that covered the material really well. You can also read the textbook chapters, but I was fine with the videos only, then using the textbook to aid with homework. I like his format for tests because you can feel confident in earning a grade you deserve.
He is a good teacher and makes the class easy for someone to take.
He has a short time for the quiz's and they are proctored. But also he doesn't let us know what we got wrong on the Quiz's or the tests. He was not willing to meet over zoom and talk.
The class set up was wack because you just watch the videos and go to class for him to answer questions. Dont be fooled into thinking this is good because half the time he just skeets around the answer until you are real confused.
A good choice for a teacher. He is really fluent in this field and is a good teacher. Participation is required for a few things and class attendance is necessary if you want a good grade.
Brother Holyoak is an extremely knowledgeable professor and will absolutely respond to any emails within 24 hours. He has changed his lectures for class because of COVID so you need to show up to class with the material already reviewed. Has 3 major tests that make up just about all your grade so make sure to be reviewing every other day.
Brother Holyoak is very clear about what is required. There are 10-20 minute videos that you watch before class. Class is basically just a Q&A session since COVID, which isn't always the best use of your time. If you understand what is on the slides and can answer the HW question, you will be more than able to do well in the class.
Pretty lecture heavy but, if you come to class having read the material or watched the videos you're good. Other than that not anything else that's to hard or bad. Gives clear instructions for homework and assignments.
I had Brother Holyoak for a remote biology class. He would have us watch the lectures before class and then hold a question-and-answer session. It worked pretty well for me and even though it was a big class it was easy to ask questions and he always gave great feedback. Tests are a big deal and make up a large portion of your grade.
This class is really hard and is designed to fail students. He was a great teacher, but the course itself is awful.
Very harsh, very tough on grading. Sometimes unfair as well. Tests are worth majority of your grade so they can make or break your final score.
He had a roundabout way of explaining concepts sometimes would make me feel more confused than helpful and very test heavy there are four tests and basically your overall grade heavily depends on those.
Course consists of pre-lecture videos and then a Q&A session each day. Very easy class and it's just a lot of conceptual stuff; not as hard or in-depth as BIO 180. Holyoak is a solid professor - his pre-lecture videos are clear, and will answer your questions in class. Watch the videos, take notes, follow the daily objectives, and you've got an A.
He is a great teacher, but i felt like he wanted us to fail. When it came to the test, i wanted to know what i got wrong and he would just email us the topics we got wrong. He wont show us the test to see exactly what we got wrong but that is what i wanted. i wanted to see him in person to show me, but he was always worry about people taking pic
Brother Holyoak is a great teacher, you can tell he knows the material very well. However, the way this class is set up, he doesnt get the opportunity to showcase his abilities. Its a zoom class with pre-recorded videos. So you basically have to teach yourself and the classes are just Q and A. Like I said he is smart, but he's also very strict.
Brother Holyoak is a very smart teacher. He will be able to answer your questions, but sometimes it's more than what you ask for. The way he sets up his class is it is a Q & A based on the videos you watch. You can watch the videos and totally pass the class. The videos are not that bad, but the homework doesn't really relate to the exams.
This is the fourth class I've taken from Brother Holyoak and he's the best. You know exactly what he expects from you, if you do your work and study you will do just fine in his classes.
Gives more Info then needed, which can be difficult in knowing what to study for as it is all ready a lot as is!
I really enjoyed my experience in this class. I felt like the professor cared about his students and really wanted us to do well.
Brother Holyoak knows what he is talking about, but this is a hard class. Sometimes I felt as though there was some political views that are not necessary to be shared. Your grade is heavy on tests and quizzes and some of them have tricky questions in them so if you do not know the material inside and out good luck.
It's much more difficult than BIO 180, and some may not be suited to his lecture style ( watch lectures at your own time, ask questions in class.) Just don't think this is another BIO 180 to pass with ease. Overall a great professor that is willing to help. There's homework for every class with quizzes once a week btw.
This class is not too difficult as long as you listen to the lectures, ask good questions, and review your notes. I took this class over zoom and Brother Holyoak's question and answer sessions were fantastic. He is great at answering questions and is easy to contact via email outside of class.
Brother Holyoak is great! He is a very fair and optimistic teacher. He has a great personality and is very amiable. I did not care for the "Q&A" style of teaching, but the lectures that are prerecorded are quite good.
I really enjoyed Professor Holyoak, before class you are expected to watch the lecture and come with questions. In class he does a very good job at answering any questions. The tests are very fair and are mostly write in.
Brother Holyoak is very caring and wants you to succeed. As long as you put in the effort to watch the provided lectures before class and come to class with questions for him to answer, you will do well. Make sure you keep up with the homework assignments and quizes.
This class was taught by zoom so I did not receive the normal experience of the class.
Great teacher, and he cares a lot about the success of his students. The class was taught over zoom, but he holds question and answer sessions every class period which really helped. The course is very test heavy, but if you pay attention and stay caught up on the pre-class work you'll do fine.
Straight-forward class. Assigned lectures to watch with reading and homework assignments, weekly quizzes, 3 unit exams and a final. If you put in the work, take notes and pay attention you'll get a decent grade. Class time is just a Q&A session so I found it's only really worth it to attend if you have specific questions/are fuzzy on the material.
Holyoak is a solid teacher. I took this class remotely. There are assigned readings & pre-recorded lecture that you watch before class, which is just a Q&A session. He is pretty good at explaining things in a way that everyone can understand. One thing that I really did appreciate is that he definitely is passionate about what he teaches.
The course itself is a little difficult, but the way Brother Holyoak taught it made it even more so. We basically have to teach ourselves by reading information from the textbook and watching pre-recorded videos. The lectures are just Q&A's. We show up and ask questions about what we read/watched the night before.
good teacher, and professor
Professor Holyoak is a great guy. He honestly cares about his students. But I do think his set up is a little bizarre. His Canvas page is very strangely set up. He only has class Q & A's instead of actual lectures. He has recorded lectures for you to learn from, but they are far different than a live lecture.
I took Marine Biology from him remotely (pre-recorded lectures with Q/A class discussions on zoom) and it was honestly my favorite class of my whole college career. I learned so much and he explains everything in a way that was very easy to understand. Tests are big for your grade, but if you pay attention in class they aren't too difficult.
Good course with interesting topics. Test heavy with three unit tests and one final. The test make up most of your grade so make sure you do well. Class periods are Q&A sessions and Prof. Holyoak does well at answering questions. Make sure you work hard and put in the time to study!
I really enjoyed this class! One of my favorite things that Bro. Holyoak does is if you ask he will send you a detailed list of all the things you missed and why on exams. His graders can be a little tough grading homework, so be sure to read all directions carefully!
The class is difficult to begin with. The teacher always answers your questions both during class and outside of class. There is no taking attendance, but it is highly recommended to go to class to understand the material.
Holyoak is passionate about marine biology and is always willing to answer questions. Due to Covid, our class was remote. We watched a pre-recorded lecture and the class hour was a Q & A session. There were a lot of additional reading materials provided, some of which homework assignments came from but test material was from the lectures.
Brother Holyoak is a really good guy who knows a lot about the course material. However, he is not great at actually teaching the material. Don't get me wrong, his lectures are fine, but they do not appear to be designed to really help studentsL LEARN as much as they are to just present information. Bro Holyoak's class is just answering questions.
My main qualm is that Brother Holyoak doesn't do office hours or any break out room activities which made it very difficult to build a relationship with him or any of the other students, I often felt alone in this class. It is very important to network and build relationships with professors, Brother Holyoak's teaching style made this impossible.
I think Brother Holyoak is a good teacher, easy to reach outside of class, good with Canvas, etc. I appreciated how organized and up to date he was on everything. He is also kind and helpful with questions during class. He gave a spiritual thought every class, which I appreciated. You can tell he loves what he teaches.
Alan Holyoak should not be a professor. He does not do any teaching, and he is constantly removing his lecture videos because they are wrong 50% of the time. He is proud of the fact that his classes have a test average is 67%. DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES!!!
I liked this class pretty well. You watch the lecture before class and come with questions and I learned a lot more from this biology class set up than the biology class I took at the other college I transferred from where you hear the lecture for the first time in class. I didn't ever read the textbook.
Professor Holyoak was the sweetest professor I've ever had. We only had to attend class once a week to discuss an article for that week otherwise he recorded lectures that we would watch anytime.
He's not too bad of a teacher. There's no mercy if you miss an assignment or mess up but he expects you to be understanding of his personal needs. Quiz and test questions are pretty stupid. Certain topics on the test are heavily hit on (like 80 points) and other topics will not even be mentioned. If you put in the time to study you'll do well.
Ok, so don't get me wrong, Bro. Holyoak obviously knows what he's talking about. But be aware that his tests are poorly phrased, and that he will have you watch a video lecture prior to class, and then he'll only answer questions during the class time. The Q&A sessions make it easy to not focus on the important parts of what we should be learning.
This class is test heavy. If you do bad on one, I promise you can't redeem yourself. The study guides do not help you because everything you ever learned is on them. You have twelve quizzes (1 every week) and you get 8 minutes on them, you take them through proctorio. I advise you to meet with a tutor. Good luck with the genetics unit.
Prof. Holyoak is a professional, but that doesn't mean he doesn't know when to tell some jokes. Very thorough with material, flexible tests and makes sure you understand the material.
I really enjoy taking classes from Brother Holyoak. This class was online so there were pre-recorded lectures to watch before class and every week we read an article and discussed it in class. If you watch the lectures and ask questions in class, then you should pass the class.
Brother Holyoak is great. He is so patient and will explain things over to make sure everyone understands. The class is test heavy, but I never felt like they were unfair or random. I never read the textbook and got A's on the tests, just focus on the lectures. Pay attention to the specific examples he gives.
Brother Holyoak is an amazing teacher. He really knows his stuff and he explains things very well and in detail. He wants his students to succeed and encourages questions. You have to be accountable for yourself in this class by doing the prep work so that you can participate in the Q&A sessions. He's so nice and also organized. I would take again.
Brother Holyoak is an incredible man! However the Q&A sessions are not beneficial at all. Students ask dumb questions and too much time is spend on topics and ideas that mean nothing and have no relevance to the test.
Brother Holyoak is great! I really love how caring and how much he wants you to succeed. He provides lecture recordings to help with you study material and offers class as non-mandatory--but go. He let's his students ask him any and all questions they have and he will answer. Some bewares: He doesn't go over the test with you in fear it will getout
(professor) He's willing to provide a summary of what you missed on the exams but once you turn it in, you'll never see the graded copy. (Department) Homework is a useless joke. They say studying quizzes wont help with exams but will copy questions into the exam. Oh and I passed Chem 481 with a B-... I know how to apply myself.
Bro Holyoak definitely wants his students to succeed. He has so much knowledge regarding Biology and you can tell he really loves to share that knowledge with us. His class was practically all lecture-based which got a little boring at some points but I thought was really useful in learning the information. Super nice guy, Id take the class again.
Very knowledgeable and patient with his students. Will answer any questions as thoroughly as he can. Not afraid to admit when he doesn't know something and will do research outside of class on the subject for you. Wants his students to succeed and will do every reasonable thing he can to help you.
Brother Holyoak is a great professor. He cares about his students and is always there to answer your questions. As long as you study the material, you'll do great in this class.
Has 4 exams. Ecology, Genetics, Evolution, Final-Comprehensive. If you fail 1 then your screwed. Will not review tests, so you dont learn from mistakes. Does not care about you learning the concept. Instead be prepared to learn some weirdly specific stuff. Ex- Dates and region of extinction of certain species that were mentioned for 5 sec in class
Brother Holyoak is very knowledgeable and explains complex concepts with simplicity. There is a textbook which he says you should read but honestly, it's optional. The quizzes and exams are based solely on the lecture videos so it is easy to understand what you need to know. The class itself will always be a Q&A on the lecture video. I enjoy it!
He does not meet with you outside of class, and does not give extensions because its not fair to the other students. Hes very passionate about what he teaches, which is very obvious and makes it easy to learn from, but it doesnt make up for the fact that you cant learn from your mistakes because he wont help you with them.
Brother Holyoak is the best. I took him for marine bio and I might be biased just because I love the ocean, but this class was incredible. I learned so much and I had fun doing it. I studied a regular amount and felt that this class was really easy so that was good for my gpa. Taking him again next semester because hes cool.
I loved this class. However, I feel like the material we went over did not prepare you for the test. The tests were a lot more specific than what we learned, but it was this way for all the different teachers lectures I attended for bio181. Also, the pre recorded lectures never matched the days that we were on, they were always a day behind.
He is not a bad instructor at all, but I did not appreciate the teaching style. Classes are purely Q&A; all lectures and reading are outside of class. I did not attend the Q&A frequently because I felt I didn't learn much. Holyoak is good at answering questions offers good explanations.
Professor Holyoak is a great teacher, super caring of his students. He does teach differently than your normal teacher. He has you watch the lecture videos and take notes before you come to class. During class, he'll answer your questions on all the things you don't understand. it is a good class just a bit harder than your normal class tho.
He is always caring, there are a lot of assignments but they are pretty easy. The purpose is to understand the material and divide the grade in small proportions so it doesn't affect you if you miss one. Good jokes, good lectures! Probably just a little problem with the TA's of the class, too picky
He's very willing to help anyone who has trouble with the material. problem is, you're supposed to do your own studying and then take class time to clarify what you didn't understand. The plus side is that there's ample time to grasp what you don't understand. The negative side is that you have to actually learn on your own time.
Brother Holyoak is a really great professor that is passionate about the courses he teaches. A solid choice for any Bio class.
I took this one online. Brother Holyoak is a great lecturer. I didn't do too well in the class. But that is on me. I am a terrible student, he is a great teacher though and is great at answering questions. Would have preferred to take this class in person.
He does really good lectures. The tests are intense. Very specific questions that can be hard to know what to study for. Finally there is a zero tolerance for late work. There are only a few dropped grades so keep ahead and you'll be fine.
Brother Holyoak is super nice and really cares about his students! The class is rather difficult, but if you study hard you can get a decent grade. He is super willing to answer your questions as well.
Brother Holyoak is a great teacher and can explain things really well. Class usually felt like a waste of time because it is only Q&A, and people would ask dumb questions about things that we were not going to be tested on. The recorded lessons for the prep work were great though.
I really enjoyed taking Marine Biology from Brother Holyoak! He is very knowledgeable and takes time to thoroughly answer questions. There is homework after every class but it usually is very simple. Overall a great class!
Brother Holyoak really cares about teaching marine biology. The class does require you to read the material in advance and the next class period, will be discussion of the material and any questions involved. Class was super easy and straightforward but the research papers gets extremely redundant after awhile.
His BIO 181 class is split into 3 units: ecology, genetics, and evolution. His passion is ecology, and it shows- he put a lot of effort into teaching clearly and well in the first unit. He wasn't incredibly clear during the genetics portion, though, and a lot of outside study was required to understand what was going on.
Bother Holyoak is a great professor. Very organized. This class requires a lot of work. There are a lot of article summaries and homework assignments, but they are graded easily. Your worst grades are dropped. The tests are fantastic and way easier than I thought. I love how he formatted them. Do your prep work and homework and you will be fine.
Brother Holyoak is a good teacher. Usually I do well with Biology, but I didn't try as hard with Bio 181. He is willing to work with you and help one on one.
Very clear expectations and clearly eager to spread his knowledge
He's fine I guess, but he makes you watch two different pre-recorded lectures before each class and then also attend the class lecture which adds up to a lot of hours of lectures. He is also not very understanding and is not willing to work with you, so do things his way or you'll fail.
I really liked the genetics portion, but I feel like I was teaching it to myself more. Ecology was good too, but evolution I did not like. He was a nice teacher, and taught well, but had high expectations that were hard to accomplish. Overall was fine.
Brother Holyoak is a fantastic professor! His lectures are great and he connects really well with his students. This is the second course I have taken from him and will be taking a third! He is very knowledgeable and organized with the subject. He has a great personality and is ready to help! He makes learning fun!
Brother Holyoak is an awesome professor and very knowledgeable. I loved the opportunity to learn from him and have enjoyed his class. He has transitioned to online class structure. Due to his style, His class does REQUIRE (bold that word) that you do the prep. lecture and have questions for class (so time 13-45 min. per class). I loved him!
Holyoak is awesome. Super nice and very knowledgeable
Although this class was online and was more of a do it your self. it really helped me a lot. I know that I am not a diligent person, so this helped me be on my feet and so the things that I needed to to.
The whole hour class time was remote and was solely a Q&A. You watch 2 lecture videos (30min) for prep and or read. but come with questions, not my favorite style personally, but is handy! the homework is minimal, The genetics section is known to be tough! If you want to learn what a real man ought to be like get to know brother, Holyoak.
Brother Holyoak is awesome. He really knows his information and is so happy to help all of his students succeed.
The class meetings are for your questions about the material, NOT for learning the material. Do all of the assigned reading and watching, ask lots of questions, you'll do fine. The tests are all short answer, but you have a selection to answer from. Bro Holyoak is very accessible and happy to answer any/all questions.
Holyoak's Zoom meetings were more of a QnA session and it was really helpful to watch his lecture and then come to class to ask for clarification on anything you didn't understand. He's really cares about his student's success and it shows. He answers his emails almost immediately.
I loved Brother Holyoak's class. He knows a lot about his subject and he helps you learn and love what your are learning. He doesn't require a lot from you, but he expects your best. He is very reasonable and he communicates effectively. He is a really great professor.
So overall he's a solid professor. I personally didnt like the online teaching style with the lecture videos that you have to watch before class as I feel class should be when you teach the material and then you have time to ask questions immediately after you are taught it instead of days later when you finally have class after you watched the vid
I didn't go to class for almost a month and still passed. Just put a little effort in and you'll be good.
Holyoak is a great professor! The lectures are recorded and can be viewed anytime. The class periods are Q&A sessions which I think are optional to attend. The homework is easy. The tests take some studying. Easier than BIO 180 in my opinion due to materials and teaching style.
Brother Holyoak definitely loves what he teaches. I found this class very interesting and I learned a lot of new things in his class. The semester still hasn't finished quite yet, but I got a B+. This class isn't super difficult and exams have a lot of written parts. It does take a decent amount of time, but it's not super difficult.
He's a super cool teacher, and his lectures are honestly enjoyable in comparison to most professors. If you don't pay attention or study, though, you won't pass. Exams are pretty much all essay format so you can't guess your way out.
Brother Holyoak is very open to questions and will answer the best he can. After class you can email him and he will explain things you do not understand. He's pretty quick with his responses. There are two lectures on every topic but its worth getting that extra material. Make sure to study the prep guide and homework that he provides, it'll help.
Professor Holyoak cares about answering his students questions and is always very open to them. There are a lot of resources available to students in his course to help them succeed. If you put in the effort you can succeed, too.
Professor Holyoak is always available to answer questions about the material being taught and provides a great amount of detail. He's also just a really nice guy and wants to see everyone pass. The material he teaches lines up mostly well with the exams but that is only because he does not write them himself. I would definitely recommend him.
Brother Holyoak is an amazing teacher and teaches really well through zoom. It's super important to pay attention to his lectures because that's where all the material for the tests comes from.
Bro. Holyoak is awesome! For class, lectures were recorded and we showed up to to ask questions. Homework in this class was EZ freaking PZ and usually took about 5 minutes. Pay attention to the video lectures and you'll be fine. He admits when he cant answer your question, and doesn't ramble. He's fairly hip and funny actually. Take him. Great guy.
This class was through zoom. I loved it, but the textbook wasn't necessary for me since he tests only on the material in the pre-recorded lectures and slides. Usually one article summary/week, and it is the most work in this class. Holyoak has been one of my favorite professors here for a while, and I will miss his classes!
I can't imagine someone wanting to take another teacher for this class. I couldn't've asked for more out of a teacher.
He's really good at teaching. Just be aware that you have to come to class prepared, and make sure you ask questions.
Holyoak is very kind and patient. You will have a lecture video before class (times very) and class time is a Q&A section. If you pay attention and ask your questions (either in or out of class) you'll be fine.
The grading is very clear, so if you do your homework, review for quizzes, and study for test you will be fine. The quizzes are a little tough having a short time limit like 10 minutes.
Brother Holyoak was a great professor. He definitely knows what he is talking about and wants all of his students to succeed. My only problem is that he only taught towards questions that we have. He never taught us things that he knew we would need to know unless we asked about them. All around great guy though.
Brother Holyoak really made learning Biology fun again, I have always struggled and had some interesting professors teach biology. I was able to feel respected by him and he made everything easier to understand.
Brother Holyoak is super caring. I love how he goes over the quizzes and and think of questions before going to class.
Brother Holyoak is a really good teacher. He breaks complex ideas down into simple, easy to understand principles. Watch all the pre-recorded lectures and go to class and you'll be fine. Only complaint is that he talks really slowly. Fortunately, I took the class remotely so I just watched the pre-recorded lectures and class lectures on 1.75x speed
Probably one of the best class structures I have had, especially since Covid-19 made everything go online. Lecture hours are for students to ask clarifying questions since you have to show up prepared. The actual lecture material is prerecorded and Alan does a good job explaining the material.
All of his classes were Q and A sessions, so it was important to be do the prep work beforehand so you knew what questions you needed to ask for that day. He also recorded all of his classes so if you needed to go back and look at something it was pretty easy to find.
Don't take studying lightly! He is a great professor and will answer your questions as quickly as he can. He makes sure you understand the answer to your question. He takes especially great care to make class time is used for its purpose.
He is very good at explaining in his videos and if any questions are needed, he uses all of class time to answer questions.
Professor Holyoak is a great teacher. He is very caring of his students and always makes sure that we understand the material. He is always open for questions and is very considerate. He does a really good job at explaining things and makes topics easier to understand. I would definitely take a class from him again!
Lots of lecutres and HW assignments, but it is a pretty easy class if you put the time in. Professor Holyoak is very accomodating to when youre sick and will push exams out for you.
Gives really good explanations and answers for your questions.
Hes a great teacher
I learned a lot from Professor Holyoak, as he had us prepare for class by watching recorded lectures. He was kind and wanted us to come to him with our questions. His teaching method helps the information stick.
Brother Holyoak was awesome! I hardly ever attended class, but he records all of the lectures and zoom meetings, so I could watch them on my own time. His lecture videos were great and included everything we needed to know for the exams. The exams are completely write-out (no multiple choice), but as long as you study, you'll do very well!
videos are great. very boring but tries to make fun jokes on the subject matter. wouldnt take again.
Brother Holyoak is so kind and wants all his students to do well. He will answer all the questions you have very clearly and as long as you attend class and study, you will do fine.
He is enthusiastic about the material but isn't flexible at all.
Brother Holyoak is awesome! This is my second class from him and I'd take him again if I could. He really cares about his students and wants to help everyone succeed. Lecture heavy but you don't have to read the book besides for homework. The lab quizzes are a pain but review the prep guides he gives you and you'll ace the tests.
Brother Holyoak is extremely knowledgable and gives you all the necessary information needed to succeed. Video lectures were helpful for me because he moves fast in class and sometimes can't get through all the material.
This is my second time being in one of Brother Holyoak's classes. He is an amazing teacher and is very organized and kind. If you can't make it to class he has set up prerecorded lectures to help make up for the things you missed. As long as you pay attention to the lectures and make good notes it is a very fun class to take from him.
I took Invertebrate Zoology from Brother Holyoak and it was the one of the best classes I have taken. His lectures are amazing and he is so knowledgeable.
Overall, Holyoak is a good professor. The class is pretty lecture heavy, but he's passionate about the topic and makes it fun. There is a lot of memorization in the 312 class, but he makes it enjoyable, or bearable at least.
Such a wonderful teacher, actually respects each student and takes questions seriously, but does not shame anyone for their level of understanding. Extremely knowledgeable and humble.
Brother Holyoak is an amazing professor. He is so kind and funny. He is always willing to answer questions and takes all questions seriously. He is a very generous test grader. I really appreciated that. He is always willing to meet and is a great mentor. I am taking another class from him next semester and I am so excited. 10 out of 10 teacher!
Very good and passionate teacher, keeps lectures entertaining was never bored in the class
Holyoak is a great guy and knows his stuff. His lab quizzes are very hard. Make sure you study. There is some busy work with writing article summaries but he picks interesting articles. He is passionate about what he teaches and that makes it fun to learn. I liked all his quotes from the beetles and others he would say at the beginning of class.
Professor Holyoak is a great guy, no doubt. But Invertebrate Zoology is tough, and he doesn't always arm you with clear study guides for tests and quizzes. In combination with the lack of a tutor for this class and you find that this class with Professor Holyoak will greatly challenge you.
Brother Holyoak is great! He really knows his stuff when it comes to Zoology and made the class engaging and interesting. He outlines the tests clearly so if you put in the work. Youll do well in the class.
Brother Holyoak is an AMAZING teacher! He does a great job of explaining everything and making sure you are engaged in the material. The class is a little lecture heavy but the material is really intriguing so it's definitely worth it. You can tell that he really knows his stuff and that he cares about your success and understanding as well.
Brother Holyoak is an amazing professor, he is very knowledgeable and passionate about what he teaches. He cares for his students but does expect work to be done in order to be successful. There were weekly lab quizzes and article summaries which became tedious each week. If you get the chance to take one of Brother Holyoak's classes, do it!
In all, He treated me fairly. With all of my interactions with him, he advised accurately with university guidelines. This class was time-intensive on many fronts, but let's be honest... it's invertebrate zoology. Nothing about it could have been simple.
Bro. Holyoak is a very good professor. He makes what he wants done with our assignments clear and easy to understand. Lots of work though - regular HW each week along w/ article summaries. Exams are hard - few questions for a lot of points. This is a difficult class but Bro. Holyoak is great and I would definitely recommend him as a teacher.
Brother Holyoak is awesome. I took him for marine biology, and I was actually missing some prerequisites but he was kind enough to give me an override/exception because it was the last time the course would be offered. I loved it. He was great at making the material accessible and his passion for the field was very evident in everything he taught.
Very knowledgeable and passionate about what he works with. Very responsive to questions and concerns. The article summaries were the hardest but once you understood what he wants from the article it's not a big problem.
Excellent teacher. Focuses a lot on lectures and homework assignments. Some busy work but most of it is applicable to the lecture that follows.
Honestly Brother Holyoak is a really good teacher. For BIO 314 it is lecture heavy, but every single lecture is brought up in the tests, so attendance is mandatory to pass the tests. There are four tests and a final exam. Also there are articles that the students read and write a summary on, with his specific criteria.
Alan Holyoak keeps class interesting by making jokes that are generally pretty funny, tying in content, making it memorable. He has lots of field experience that he draws from to help us understand concepts. It would’ve been nice if he had study guides for the exams, since he presents a lot of interesting information that is not always necessary.
A really great professor! The class is very lecture heavy, but he actually had online recordings, so if you missed class you wouldn't miss out on any important information. There is a lot of homework, but if you were paying attention it's pretty easy to complete. Overall, as long as you pay attention during lectures you should do great.
Professor Holyoak is great because he cares about his students and willingly answers all questions. He is subdued and quiet, but he can tell the best stories! Marine Biology is fun, but it's still a college course, so you must be willing to put in the work. If you're already a good student, you'll do fine. Overall, he is very chill.
This class was heavily lecture based. Fortunately, the lectures were clear and interesting. He's pretty open to questions outside of class but not necessarily the professor you just go to chit-chat with. The tests are mostly from the lectures. There was a homework assignment for each class, but they were short and to the point.
In my experience, Professor Holyoak is outstanding! He answers all questions, gives funny and helpful examples, and cares about what he teaches and who he teaches to. I took Bio 2 and Marine Bio with him and I'm taking another class w/him soon. There's frequent HW and quizzes to do. For exams go to tutoring! But if I can do it, you can!
Brother Holyoak is a great teacher. He knows a lot about what he teaches and gives great lectures. You can tell he is passionate about the ocean. Attendance isn't necessarily mandatory, but it is important if you want to pass. There is also a lot of homework, but they're usually pretty easy to get done.
It's all lecture. It's extremely nice that he posts his recorded lectures on canvas and also his slides. He's a pretty easy grader, just get it all turned in on time. He is not flexible with late work.
Brother Holyoak is a great guy. this was my second time taking one of his classes. He wants to make sure you understand the material so he will also make sure to ask the class if you have a good hold on the material, if not he's more than happy to help you out. his grading is very far and easygoing but he does not take late work.
Brother Holyoak is an extremely intelligent and well-rounded man. I appreciate his desire to include a relevant spiritual thought before every single lecture. There was no structure for the course in terms of test preparation. Therefore, you could study as much as you could and be slammed by speifics. So beware the tests, but love the guy.
Brother Holyoak is one of my favorite teachers. I have had him three times and his classes are always amazing. The class is lecture heavy but he tells lots of fun stories and he's very knowledgeable. He is always willing to answer questions. Take him!
Brother Holyoak is an amazing, inspirational professor who knows his stuff! I liked all of the spiritual messages he gave before each lecture. I would recommend asking questions and taking good notes. :)
He is a good professor who is kind and understand about what happens outside of class. He grades fairly and the assignments are very clear cut and forward.
He delivers. Literally will be clean, simple and direct in his course material. Cuts the crap becuase the material is so interesting. Stays on topic which I love.
Holyoak is one of my favorite teachers. I wish he would've brought specimens to class, but honestly, the lectures were incredible and he would also post pre-recorded lectures in case you couldn't make it to class. It's easy to get an A if you do the homework and study for the exams. Most people don't get an A because they skipped homework.
Professor Holyoak is passionate about what he teaches and wants his students to share that passion. His lectures are very enjoyable and he always takes time to explain concepts as well as possible. Every test question comes straight from his lessons and with good notes and a quick review before the exam I had no trouble doing well in his class.
There's a lot of heavy lecturing, but it's nice to see a professor so passionate about lots of different subjects. He also tries to be very accommodating of students' needs.
Professor Holyoak clearly loves what he does, the lectures were lively and full of personal but related stories. He is very knowledgeable about the topic and was able to answer almost all questions that came up. The course has small homework summaries about topics in class every day that is helpful when studying for the exam which ask about details
He is very knowledgeable about marine biology and is passionate about it. The course has a lengthy scientific document to read and summarize every week. After each class, there is a small homework assignment, which really helped me on the tests. He provides video lectures and I just started watching the videos rather than going to class.
He is a great guy! He is a very tough grader, and his tests are pretty hard, but he has really good lectures and plenty of opportunities to get help. So as long as you go to class and study you should do fine.
Professor Holyoak was an amazing teacher this semester. He is extremely knowledgeable about marine biology and all aspects of biology. Grading was done fairly fast and the graders gave accurate scores that represented work being submitted!
He has recordings of all his lectures posted on I-Learn along with the PowerPoints he uses. He's good at explaining the material in a way that's understandable. There are weekly one-page single-spaced article summaries due and homework questions after each class that usually only take a couple sentences to answer. He's a fairly easy grader though.
Brother Holyoak is an awesome! He is very passionate about Marine Biology which makes the lectures so much better. I had some personal stuff going on outside of class that drained me emotionally and spiritually. But it was nice to go to his class 3 times a week and just being able to focus on something else for awhile. Thank you Brother Holyoak :)
Brother Holyoak is a great professor! He lectures often and tells lots of stories from his personal experiences with the material he is teaching. The workload for the course was very manageable, and the exams were not very difficult. He is also easy to talk to if you have questions. If you like teachers that go into great detail, he is your guy!
Not willing to work with students to help them make up their grade, you have one chance for all homework's and they are grade very hard. Everything he goes over in class is given on the online lecture.
