He is a very smart teacher but he is hard and intimidating. I had to put A LOT of effort to his class. quizzes every week. made me feel stupid when I ask how to answer a homework question.
He doesn't speak clearly. He is extremely smart, but makes the students feel stupid. I could not ask a question because he usually gets upset. He gets intense.
He has a thick chinese accent, but you get used to it after a couple of weeks. If you are in calculus, he won't answer algebra questions (in class) but also, he won't mark your test wrong if you make an algebra mistake, but you do the calc part right. He is a great help if you go to his office. A!
the class is not hard if you pay attention to lecture and attend class everyday. the only thing is he does talk down to students when you ask questions. he never collects homework but expects you to do it anyways.
He's tough - didn't let my class use calculators. Strict attendance nazi and his lectures were unclear.
a very smart man, a horrible teacher, speaks very unclearly
A good teacher. I wasn't interested in taking the class and was doing poorly in the beginning but his lectures made me understand statistics better. I got out of his class with a B (I was expecting to fail the class). I think it is important that you have to commit to attend classes everyday if you take him. He breaks equations down so even f u don
He seems intimidating at first. He talks down to people that ask questions, but the questions were often things that he had said clearly several times. He's very good at explaining the material. Listen closely and attend class and you'll do just fine.
Jian is VERY serious. You need to pay attention and do the homework otherwise you will fall behind and he does not explain things twice. The class may get confusing, but he does very well breaking things down. Just make sure your there everyday. by the way his accent is not that bad, just get used to drawing "gwaf's" and "waising your hand" Goodluck
He's excellent at explaining the material. The lectures were organized and it was easy to take good notes. Don't goof off in this class though, because he expects you to take it seriously. Overall, he's a good teacher and I would take him again!
Talked down to students who asked questions. Seems like he could be a good teacher if he cared.
Very bad teacher. He will made you feel stupid when you ask questions.Just doesn't teach well. Try to avoid this teacher at all cost.
Do not take him, unless you know your math really well. His accent is hard to understand and makes you really feel bad in class.. I recommend to take someone else unless you like challenging teachers for math.
Although Jian's accent is slightly unclear, his powerpoint slides are very clear, very detail, and are in english. If you take good notes, read, and do your homework you will receive a good grade that is equal to your effort. In fact, Jian is a good teacher and your study habits is probably why students are not receiving good grades. Excuses suck!
Brought my 4.0 GPA down. Very tough class. I would reccommend taking someone else and save yourself stress. It'll be okay for a little while in the beginning but after that everything will go downhill. I stopped understanding things and my grades fell, along with those of the other very few students who decided to stick with the class.
THIS GUY SUCKS!! He doesn't explain himself AT ALL! He thinks he knows all and if you don't know it then you should teach yourself all about it. He says graphing like "gwafing" it gets old really quick. It's stressfull and if you ask for clarity he makes you more confused. He is not very nice either, all around...he does to TRY to make jokes.
This teacher believes in dumb questions so it is hard to ask a question for fear of being looked down upon. And if you don't ask, you will probably get behind. Try to take someone else or sit next to a smart kid who will help you.
Worst teacher I have ever had. He knows his stuff really well, but he acts like the students should know everthing before hand. When you ask questions he makes you feel stupid. Only class i have ever failed. I took it again with Pinto and passed without a problem. If you want to keep your good GPA avoid taking Jians class
The BEST math teacher I ever had. His lectures are so clear and thorough he really leaves little room for questions. His accent is light, and NOT distracting. His courses are by no means a free pass. Take him and the class seriously, and you WILL learn the subject. I suck at math and was able to pass his class with a B and did not do 1 HW assignmen
He is a very tough teacher. He is nice to you if you're a smart person and already know the material. If you ask a question he considers dumb then he will tell you that you're wasting him time. He's a good teacher, but he can be pretty mean. I was retaking this class to refresh my memory, so it was okay for me, but he was pretty harsh on some peopl
Terrible, worst teacher ever. Didn't learn anything and I actually love math. Also well over half the class has dropped and the only people in there are probably failing as well
Worst teacher i've ever had.
He was very unprofessional. He was not helpful at all and basicly you had to learn on your own. So if you have plenty of time and do not require the teachers help then take the class. Also note that he yells and calls students name.
Very good teacher, but has no patience what-so-ever. He's really mean, which I personally thought was hilarious. Explains things well, but refuses to lead you through step by step (algebra). The upside to all that, though, is if you have the strategy right in your problem solving, you still get most of the points.
He is hard to understand, but once you get about two weeks into his class you will have no problem understanding him. He is a good teacher, just don't talk while he's talking and you will be fine.
ONE OF THE WORST. Sometimes i couldn't even understand what he was saying. He's not clear when explaining things and will only give, maybe, one example. Goes through lectures super fast and does not have any patience!
Dr. Jian is a difficult teacher, but the crap about "not speaking english" and "doesn't care" mean nothing. Whoever says those things aren't listening in class and have never really talked to him. Sure, his class is hard, but don't blame him; he is more than willing to help you. Dr. Jian is tough in class because he is....teaching; rough concept.
WARNING!!WORST TEACHER POSSIBLY IN THE WORLD! IF YOU HAVE ANY SELF RESPCT OR DIGNITY HE WILL STRIP YOU OF IT. HES VERY MEAN, RUDE, INTIMIDATING,SARCASTIC AND USLESS WHEN YOU NEED HELP. 80% OF MY CLASS DROPED BY THE FIRST 30DAYS. ONLY 4 WERE LEFT BY FINAL. DO NOT TAKE THIS GUY!! HE SHOULD'NT BE TEACHING ANYWHERE. HES HERE ONLY TO GET PAID NOT TEACH!
ONE OF THE WORST! HES HATES TO BE INTERUPTED HE HATES WHEN YOU ASK A QUESTION HE DISCRIMINATES AGAINST MINORITIES SO IF YOU ARE A MINORITY ( NOT ASIAN LIKE HIM) DONT EVEN BOTHER ASKIN GOT HELP OR GOING TO HIS OFFICE BECAUSE HE WILL RUSH YOU OUT AFTER MAKING YOU FEEL DUMB!! YOUVE BEEN WARNED!!
He is a great TEACHER!! I attempted to take Statistics the first time with Scott and he was horrible. He did not teach the subject whereas Dr. Jian took his time to show examples to help the class understand the subject. I learned a lot from him. He can come off as being rude because he has the whole class to attend to & its a lot of information.
BEWARE! DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR! He is extremely rude and very hard to understand! Thick asian accent,Says graphing like "Gwaphing". Dont Even try asking a question, it will not be answered and all that will be accomplished is him making you feel like an idiot and making you even more confused than you already were! Examples were few and unclear
He absolutely refuses to work problems out on the board for the class. He uses words like, "obvious" and says things like, "I showed you this before." It's not obvious when you are learning and guess what? An instructor may have to repeat concepts more than once when someone is learning. Not a good instructor.
Worst teacher ever. He hates to help anyone. Why he continues to teach at Solano I DO NOT KNOW.
This teacher is awful! He makes you feel like an idiot and DOESNT ANSWER YOUR QUESTIONS!!! He'll get upset and say he's already explained it. He's rediculous. The first few weeks the class was completely full and now, half way through, there are six people. DONT TAKE IT!!!
The only warning that a student needs about Dr. Jian is this: If you don't want to actually understand the material aside from calculator shortcuts, then don't take him. Dr. Jian teaches students like they actually care about learning, though most students don't, and his lectures are very thorough. Don't take him if you're just in for an easy A.
Yes, im in his class right now, and everything that everyone is saying is...TRUE!!!!! Hint to anyone who takes Dr. Jian. Be prepared to teach yourself and try to MEMORIZE ALL THE FORMULAS he doesnt allow people to plug it in a calculator only to calculate problems
This teacher made learing really hard. You have to do all of your homework and study a lot to get anywhere near a good grade on the quizes (there's one every mon) and the tests are hard. Your grade depends only on tests and minitabs. He is very unwilling to explain things and help. Very set in his ways. Find another teacher.
Possibly the worst teacher on the planet. His teaching style, technique and unhelpfulness make him an all around avoidable teacher.
He is very meticulous about translating quantitative answers to plain English and would take off lots of points for it. He is funny and makes understanding easy. His exams are almost identical to his study guide and quizzes are open notes. Attend class everyday - he solves problems on powerpoint that you will see on exam. I would recommend him.
DON'T TAKE THIS TEACHER!! I read these ratings before I took his class and decided to take it anyway, BIG MISTAKE! I dropped, along with most of the class, after about 6 weeks. He is very unclear and requires way too much memorization, where other teachers do not. He's unapproachable and makes Statistics much harder to learn than it is.
THE WORST TEACHER IN THE WORLD!!!! Makes you feel dumb when you don't understand something and he is more interested in showing his math skills by making things complicated when theres an easy way to do it and understand. I won't take him if his class was the only one open for enrollment
Dont take this guy. i took him and hes the most picky teacher ive ever had. one word wrong and the whole question is wrong..
Prof. Jian is not that bad! He has a small accent, but nothing that can't be understood. I read these reviews and was scared to take his class, but I ended up getting a B. He explains things very well and is very clear on how is work should be done. Just attend class and pay attention.
He's not a bad teacher. He requires you to understand concepts and apply them, as any other statistics teacher...but this guy actually wants you to learn. He wants you to memorize formulas, but he has enough sympathy to provide you formulas at the end if they seem overloading! If you show work effort and determination he'll give you a passing grade.
Elementary Statistics. He isn't an easy teacher especially if you dont have a good math backround. He doesn't have any sympathy towards students and just doesn't understand people. If your good at math you'll be fine. Very hard grader, understand examples throughly!
This class could be very fun and easy to understand with the proper teacher. Mr. Jian is good at lectures, but is NOT a people person, very hard to get any real help from. He gets mad in class if you ask questions and makes you feel too intimidated to ask for help. I went to his office hours several times trying to get answers and with no succes
Horribleeeeeee teaching! i got out of the in less than a month. He's not very in depth with the chapter he expects you to just get it then there. In other words, went through FOUR chapters in one day and took a quiz on in it the NEXT day. get a better stats teacher!
He told me if I needed more time on tests and quizes, i needed a note from a doctor saying i was "slow"
He told me if I needed more time on tests and quizes, i needed a note from a doctor saying i was "slow"
Completely awful in every way. Speech is poor and sometimes hard to figure out. does not teach, just lectures and does examples that do not help. If you are the type of person who asks questions, you are screwed. if you ask something he completely makes you feel stupid, even if you have an answer that is wrong he will tell you that you are stupid.
I agree he is not too good at answering questions in class. He's strict, which is fine, but it's almost ridiculous...
Class started with 31 students, in the end only 11 of us took the final.
I remember reading these comments and seeing how he got a bad review.I ended up passing with a B.He was an okay teacher, but sometimes I didn't really understand what he was saying. You pretty much have to go through the book yourself but I mean sometimes in class I did understand what he was saying.Well, if you're good at math, take him,if not, don't
He has a very strong asian accent and, on top of that, a lisp--he can be very difficult to understand at times. If you are the type of student who likes to ask questions in class--don't do it. It is this man's personal goal to make any student who asks a question feel like a complete moron.
The worst teacher ever. He doesn't help you with anything, and when you ask he makes you feel stupid, and doesn't even answer your question. He doesn't have any patience for questions. He grades really hard too, and you have a quiz every week and things you just learned!!!
Great Professor, if you took stat in High but winged it, he will help a ton with clarification, great teacher, not big accent, super smart, quizes every tuesday...Easy...he gives you study guides, dont turn inthe HW. Do it like him or u will suffer...3 Sig Figs...dont round answers...easy...
He is a good teacher. He seems to be rude at times but he gives you the materials you need. If you actually pay attention to his lecture it should be easy. Ask a lot of questions if needed. Most his material is easy. He makes you understand it. Take his class if you are willing to learn.
Dr Jian is very knowledgeable and willing to explain things when you don't understand. However, sometimes he gets very passionate about math and it can seem as though he is yelling. If you like math and want to LEARN statistics, take it with Jian. If you're just looking to fulfill a GE in the easiest way possible, find someone else.
Professor Jian is brilliant! One of my favorite professors, he is strict but is extremely passionate about math and is very clear about how to do the problem, why we do it this way, and how this was developed. You have to be there to learn, or don't waist your time, or his for that matter.
he was very bad. i tried asking for help and he gave me attitude and i was really trying. i came to class everyday too. he doesnt count homework and grades hard on tests. he also tries to make jokes that are not funny..awkward
I was really excited to take a Statistics class before attending this class but after taking him I have to say I didn't really learn a lot. He doesn't really like to help his students. If you ask a question that about the previous chapter he will tell you to go to his office when you are at his office he won't help either!
Not a very good teacher. Hard to understand and he teaches way too fast hard to keep up
Dr. jian is awesome, he explains things quite clearly. he can be intimidating when you have questions but overall if youre there to learn and appreciate mathematics this is the place to be.
The work isn't too bad. He mocks late students to the extent that one time he yelled at the class and gave a 20 minute lecture about being late. He teaches pretty fast and doesn't seem to always be on the same page as the students. When he over-explains equations, the students feel very lost.
The rudest "teacher" I ever had. Us tax payers are paying him to teach students, yet he cannot even answer you're question, without making you feel incompetent. Oh and he yells while he teaches to "get his point across" which is not really an effective way of teaching...
Dr Jian is a very tough teacher because it is evident that he creates a high standard for his students. In doing so, he designs his class to be very hard in the beginning, though towards the end, I was able appreciate him. and his strategy. This man, Dr Jian knows how to teach and is very smart, though do not expect an easy A.
If You Like To Be Challenged, Take This Professor. His Test Are Hard But It You Pay Attention and DO THE HOMEWORK AND WORKSHEETS You Could Pass. He Can Be Intimidating When It Come To Questions So Ask At Your Own Risk.
Dr. Jian is one of the most underrated math professors. He's passionate about math and teaching but his class is a challenge and you WILL work hard but you WILL know calculus and ready for higher level classes. Be ready for weekly quizzes (open book). He answers questions indirectly with examples/techniques so you can figure it out on your own.
Dr. Jian was a very challenging professor, however i took a greater working knowledge away from the class and am very grateful for having taken the class. There are weekly open book quizes in class or take home. Put in the time to study for the tests and you will do fine.
Dr. Jian is tough but fair. His lectures are straightforward and easy to follow but he has extremely high expectations. The toughest homework problems are usually on the weekly quiz. Work hard and pay attention, attendance isn't mandatory but beneficial. Don't expect an easy A or your hand held but you will be prepared for higher math classes.
Probably the best teacher I've ever had. I never understood math well until his class. It's hard, but so rewarding. Truly the best teacher at Solano.
real rude guy. not very open to answer individual questions after the first 10 minutes of class. harps too much on attendance. avoid this instructor at all costs!
EXTREMELY rude professor if you try to ask a question in class. You can tell he really enjoys teaching, but he is very fast paced and doesn't care if you get left behind. Never collects homework, quizzes EVERY week and three tests that are 50% of your grade. Stay away if you have had no prior experience with statistics!
Dr. Jian obviously has a true passion for mathematics, especially vectors. This was his first time teaching Linear Algebra in 15 years, he was very clear and helped me truly visualize the tough concepts. He admittedly gets short with students who don't care, so if you are just looking for a grade, don't take him. He focuses on concepts when grading.
You can really tell he likes what he does and he does love math! However he shouldn't be so rude with the students since we all have different levels! I had experience with math since I took Calculus in High School so I didn't find Stats so hard! I think he would be a excellent professor if he changed the way he interacts with his students!
This man should not be a teacher. He mocks people who ask questions in class and is very rude if you ask him for help. He does know the subject well, but I would not recommend him.
Horrible. So rude. He makes you look stupid in front of the class when asking questions. Not available for open office hours! I dropped with the W because his teaching is horrible when I dropped only like 15 students where left. I am not surprised why people dropped! I bet he only had 5 at the end of the semester
DO NOT TAKE HIM.He is very passionate of math however, he is not passionate about teaching. He gives problems that as an expert expects you to solve. I tried getting help but he was uninterested so I asked for help in the Mac lab and even they didn't know. He is extremely rude. He made a hard subject even harder to understand.
I don't want to sound like a whiny excuse maker but professor Jian is not proficient at teaching applied calculus. He seems to be disdainful of the very idea of calculus being taught in the context of an applied calculus class, everybody should be an engineer in his mind. He's probably great for upper level calculus classes but terrible at applied.
Dr. Jian is an amazing professor. Yes he is difficult. Yes he expects a lot from you. You definitely need to know trig and your pre-cal well. If you go see him in office hours, he is very helpful and will even help you figure out transfer opportunities. He is very passionate about math and teaching and is hands down the best professor I've ever had
Dr. Jian is a teacher who expects his students to understand math, so if you just want to memorize algorithms do not take him. His grading is completely based off of concepts, which I believe is the fairest way to grade. It was his first time teaching Linear Algebra in years, but it felt like he was a pro. I'm excited to take him again in the Fall.
Dr. Jian truly cares about math and really wants you to learn the subjects of which he is teaching. He can be overbearing and is definitely a tough professor, but I think I grew due to rising to the challenge. In all he isn't impossible to pass but I wouldn't take his class if I was looking for an A either.
If you attend Solano and enjoy math, THIS IS THE TEACHER TO TAKE. His lectures are concise but clear. He provides clarification without condescension. He grades homework in all of his classes, giving students weekly feedback and keeping them on track. He commands respect and treats his students with respect. He is exactly what a teacher should be.
He wants you to know you basic math skills and your pre cal. He will not go over it in class cause it will waste class time as he said. If you need help he will help you out in his office hours.
Intense but thorough. Would take again but be better prepared. Having strong algebra and trig background is important. Tough grader.
He really cares about his students
I had Dr. Jian for vector calculus (Calc III). The first part of the semester learning vectors was fairly easy/simple. Once we got into the vector calc part with Green's Thm and Stoke's Thm, his class was uniquely helpful. He gave out handouts of theorems and special cases of Green's and Stoke's with proofs I couldn't find anywhere else.
He can seem condescending at times, and he commands respect from his students; he will say that many things are 'common sense'. His logic is next level. Assigned homework is minimal, but you will want to do more. Having him as a professor is an opportunity that should not be given up. You couldn't be more prepared if you pass his class with an A.
Prof. Alan,is a good prof. However,if you are the kind of person who likes to have a review before a test or even a final he is not the guy. He does great lectures and gives you secrets to do the Math. But he is fast, doesn't like to repeat what he shows you,and not to patient. Other than that he is a good instructor.
He will not baby you. If u plan to transfer to a University in one of the STEM fields, you will definitely be ready after finishing his class. If you want an easy A or don't need/want to take higher level math, don't take him. I've only taken Dr. Jian for the higher level maths at Solano and he was fantastic, he elaborates on theoretical concepts.
He is an awesome math Professor, used to teach at U.C. Davis. Some of his poorer ratings are unfair. Math has always been my kryptonite. With Dr. Jian if you do the assigned HW and show up to class you will understand what he is instructing. He communicates the math concepts well, doesn't skip steps so easier to understand when instructing.
I have had Jian for Calc 3 and Linear Algebra. He is a wonderful professor that truly tests your understanding of the material. He is not an easy A by any means but an A in his class means you mastered the material. He is funny and really enjoys teaching. Gives a lot of homework. Also explains things in a way that makes sense Relates calc 3 to phys
This professor is the worst throughout my college career. I am an overall A - B student. I had to take calculus as a requirement. Somehow I ended up in his class. Teacher was RUDE. Especially when you asked a question, he treats you like your stupid. He has tantrums when you called him out on mistakes. "He's NEVER wrong."
He was horrible. DO NOT TAKE! The class should've reported him to student affairs! The worst professor at Solano CC. He was kick out of UC Davis.
REPORT HIM!
Dr. Jian is an okay professor. He gives a good amount of HW and his test reviews are exactly what is on the test. DO show up to class. DO get a tutor or have access to help bcuz he is not patient and has a tendency to make people feel stupid when asking a question. His classes are doable. I only raised my hand 3 times throughout his class.
I took math 104 and it was extremely hard. He goes over things once and then expects you to figure it out through group work. He does not like repeating himself even if you are not understanding the material. Working hard and utilizing other resources such as the math lab and tutoring are the only way, in my opinion, to get an acceptable grade.
For an intro statistics class, his content is really easy to follow as long as you're in class to listen to his lectures and take notes on the slides. Most of the time you don't really need the textbook unless you're doing assigned homework--which isn't required to be turned in, however, doing it really helps with understanding the content.
Wouldnt recommend this class, but if you do take it, make sure to listen. He wont repeat it twice.
I took both linear algebra and calculus 3 with him and he not only knows the material very well but also does a great job at teaching it to his students. If you except to not put in any work and still get an A in his class you will not do well. His classes are not easy A's but it's very doable if you put in the effort.
This was a very difficult class. When you try to ask questions during the lecture he yells at you and makes you feel like your question wasnt smart. Does not explain anything effectively. Seems like if he gets it youre supposed to get it as quick as he does. No calculator on tests, no notes. No patience for students who need extra understanding.
Online class corona edition : The professor was alright for my statistics class. You definitely need to have access to his slides / notes in order to past this class because the only thing you are graded in are your quizzes and tests. You don't need to do the homework but it's nice to understand the units more. He's not the worst nor the best.
The toughest professor Ive taken in Solano. Hes overly picky and hates the methods that the textbook uses and will not accept anything but the way he teaches it as. I suggest to take any other professor but this one.
He's very black and white with no gray area at all. 25 started the class and 12 finished so I recommend reaching out to classmates via email for help. test 1 was the easiest, test 2 was difficult, test 3 was doable, and the final was okay that is if you study. You have to do well on tests since they make up half your grade. Drops your lowest test.
He grades very hard. If you mess up one word in a proof you get docked points. Almost everyone in the class is failing because he doesn't teach us well. He is also quite condescending which makes asking for clarification difficult without him making you feel dumb. DON'T TAKE A CLASS WITH THIS PROFESSOR.
Im not gonna lie after reading the comments AFTER picking him I was scared , but it seems like he does read these comments and take them into consideration. If you take notes during lecture and go to the office hours after your quizs/tests to ask for help you will pass. Its not hard, it just requires effort. Do the test reviews!!!
Very rarely do I get on here to rate. TAKE MY WORD FOR IT, HE IS AWFUL. Please just avoid this guy, take Hannan instead, he's amazing. Jian is pedantic and he's one of the profs who enjoys making math harder than it has to be bc he's overcompensating for being a garbage prof. His corrections don't make sense and the txtbook is worthless to him.
Where do I even start? His MATH40 is just as bad as his MATH22. He gives homework problems out of a textbook he doesn't even like us using. He will dock points off for different notation use (his way or the highway). How he explains proofs makes no sense as to how they're done in the textbook. He's your only point of reference, and he's a bad one.
This is as honest as it gets. He uses a textbook to teach you this is a waste of time! being that he expects you to do it HIS way his methods then why use the book. (narcissism) He lectures meaning all slides and he talks AT you like math isn't visual. He got stuck teaching he thinks he's above it therefore he does the minimum. and we PAY for it.
Math is generally a subject people hate taking and I feel like people unfairly attribute their ratings to the professor when its really their inability to do well in math or put in the work and effort. His stats class was doable. As long as you take good notes and practice the HW, you will do well. He genuinely wants you to pass. Just dont be lazy.
Jian, what a guy. You might have a book but not all of it is correct and he will let you know. If it is wrong it is I-L-L-E-G-A-L. This will occur often. He is a tough professor but he cares and no surprise if you are past calculus 2, the content is probably difficult. Your grade heavily depends on your test scores. Go to office hours and tutoring.
I'll just be totally forthright and say that if you're a student like me, using whatever website's available to help nudge you through homework assignments, you will not do well with this professor. That is the key difference between the positive and negative reviews on this page. Do not take his classes if you do not want to genuinely learn math.
Alan Jian is probably the most pretentious and narcissistic professor I've come across. Forces us to do his way of mathematics as he believes his methods are the only way to do math. Assigns always the most difficult of problems when he never does any hard problems in his lectures. Does the bare minimum in showing his work. Avoid him if you can.
He's not a good professor. Everything is his way or the highway. If you mess up on one problem on his test, the whole question is wrong which isn't good because when you're taking his test each question is worth around 20 points out of 100. His tests are worth 57% of your grade or at least in my class. So, make sure you pass them.
A lot of the reviews for Jian are a little unfair. Jian is very particular but he does explain what he expects. He provides study guides and recorded lectures so you can go back and refer to them if you need them. Math was never my strong suit but I managed to come out with an A. Just do the homework and study guides and you'll be fine.
I was intimidated taking the class but it wasnt all that bad. His lectures were not a just a word for word repeat of what the book said(unlike professors such as daryl allen). He explains well and if you have any questions hes very open to them. His lectures and hw is key to passing the tests. Hes more fair than others, I would give him a chance.
Pretty tough grader, some things marked off on my quizzes seemed minor but he took away major points at times. Quizzes basically every class but he drops your 4 lowest out of 16 you take.Makes you show work for nearly everything or he will mark points off. I wouldn't recommend this professor unless you have a strong foundation in statistics.
Always been good at math until I stepped foot into this classroom. Prepare to feel degraded for asking questions and prepare to feel stupid. Super meticulous with his work truly the worst professor and class I have ever taken.
Initially, I hated this professor because I had a D+ for most of the semester. As the semester went on, I began to understand why the way he was. He is VERY picky when grading, but it's because he wants you to actually learn and conceptualize. You will get frustrated, and you will find yourself looking at certain websites... but don't quit.
Amazing professor. I feel like the reviews aren't just. He is a great professor! He is very particular on how he wants you to show your work and does mark off points if you do it a different way then he teaches but that shouldn't be a problem. Come to class, keep your camera on so that he sees that you are actually following along & u will be okay
Professor Jian has shown himself to be one of the best professors I have ever had at Solano College. There is no denying his Math 040 and Calc 3 classes are quite challenging. But his efficient methods of problem solving that he demonstrates to the class prove to be effective and efficient. When it comes to teaching, he does it best.
If you're willing to work HARD, take him. Otherwise don't waste your time. Harsh, but clear w/ expectations. Holds you to a HIGH standard. His Calc3 is similar. Expects you to do math "correctly". As a math major this was invaluable. I feel prepared UCD b/c of his teaching. Go to office hrs/review his theorems/handouts a lot if you want to succeed.
His class was hard to get through. He doesn't speak clearly and gets upset when asked to repeat something. He moves on very fast from chapters and if you miss a class all notes you will have to get from a classmate. Tests are hard and he will mark you down on little mistakes. he gives quizzes every week. you cannot make up tests or quizzes.
Don't take this class expecting an easy A. Ask questions, go to office hours, and make sure you actually understand the material. Review examples done in class for the weekly homework. Grading is a bit harsh but his expectations are clear. Challenging class but he's a great professor overall. Very understanding and he wants his students to succeed.
Professor Jian is great! He's not only a fast grader but also very forgiving. He's understanding of small calculation mistakes. he gives partial or full credit as long as the process is correct. Take good notes and show up! He explains the quizzes thoroughly in every class, so if you're struggling, be sure to take notes during those explanations.
Great professor! Goes over a lot of examples in class to prepare you for the homework and tests. Study guides provide a good idea of what will be on the tests. Grades fast and is very understanding. Gives lots of partial credit and is lenient on small mistakes. Take good notes and go to office hours if you're struggling or want additional review.
Jian is tough, but engaging. His lectures are key - stay focused and forget the textbook. Use Unstuck AI and office hours to excel. Challenging, but worth the effort.
Great professor. Study guides were extremely similar to test questions. This class is difficult, but he is easily accessible in office hours. There are some points in the semester where he does things differently than the book, but he teaches it in a way where you can understand it better. He still shows how the book would tell you to do it though.
He is a tough grader. However, he does teach the material well and takes his time. If you do the homework (which is not required or graded),pay attention, and work hard, then you'll do fine.
This professor is annoying honestly. He grade so bad. My answer was 0.97 and the correct answer is 0.96 and he still marked me all wrong. didnt even gave me partial credit or something. Just because i rounded up my answer. If ur a freshman and hes ur teacher well ur cooked.
He doesnt allow cheat sheet or anything. he expects you to know everything from the book. its a hard class, dont waste ur time and take this class
This professor is nice but he takes his grading seriously. I withdraw this class since i couldnt learn anything at all from him
Good luck getting help outside the class. The theorem/formula/text are all made from his own "research". His lectures don't help as they assume you know everything before Calc 3. Doesn't bother to explain/give examples. If it's not his way, its "automatically wrong". You will struggle in this class. By the end of the semester, 80% of students drop.
impossible to get anything above an 80% on HW, class started off with 40 students had about 10 at the end of semester. Tests look different than the exam review, averages on exams ranged from 40%-60%, No curve. Everyone seemed scared to ask questions. Good Luck.
